At night, Veronica hosted a Bachelorette dinner party at the apartment she shared with Archie. The apartment was beautifully decorated with fairy lights and flowers, creating a festive atmosphere. Veronica had invited her bridesmaids and best friends: Betty Cooper, Olivia Baker, Tabitha Tate, Emily Cooper, and Mindy Chen. The air was filled with the mouth-watering aroma of Thai food catering, but there was a hitch.
"Alright, ladies," Veronica announced, holding a bottle of champagne. "We have amazing Thai food tonight, but there's a little problem. One of the golden wine cups for the bride-to-be is missing. We can't start the party until someone finds it."
The girls exchanged puzzled looks. Olivia frowned. "Are you sure it's missing, V? Maybe you just misplaced it."
Veronica shook her head. "No, I checked everywhere. It has my name on it, and it's special."
Betty, trying to appear nonchalant, said, "I don't have it. Maybe it's just somewhere in the kitchen."
Veronica narrowed her eyes slightly. "Are you sure, Betty? You know how important that cup is to me."
Betty nodded, a little too quickly. "Absolutely sure. I wouldn't take it."
Suspicion flickered in Veronica's eyes, but she decided to let it go for the moment. "Alright then. Drinks only until someone finds my cup."
As the girls began pouring wine and cocktails, Betty whispered to Olivia, "I have the cup. I didn't think she'd notice."
Olivia's eyes widened, then she stifled a laugh. "Why would you take it, Betty?"
Betty shrugged. "I don't know. It was just a joke, but now it feels wrong."
As the evening progressed, Veronica's frustration grew. She stood up, her voice tinged with annoyance. "Alright, seriously. If someone has my wine cup, please just return it. This is supposed to be a fun night, not a mystery novel."
The room fell silent. Betty felt a pang of guilt but stayed quiet.
Veronica's eyes scanned the room. "Betty, are you sure you don't know anything about this?"
Betty hesitated, then finally said, "Fine. I have it. I'm sorry."
Veronica's face fell, feeling a mix of betrayal and anger. "Betty, how could you? This was supposed to be my special night."
Betty looked down, ashamed. "I didn't mean for it to go this far. I just...I don't know. I'm sorry, V."
Veronica took a deep breath. "Come with me," she said, motioning towards the bedroom.
In the bedroom, Veronica closed the door behind them. "I can't believe you did this, Betty. This was supposed to be my night to celebrate with my friends, and you ruined it."
Betty sighed. "I didn't mean to ruin anything. It was a stupid prank."
Veronica's eyes were filled with hurt. "It's not just about the cup, Betty. It's about trust. And you broke that."
Betty handed over the cup. "Here. Take it. I'm really sorry."
Veronica snatched the cup and glared at Betty. "You're not going to be my maid of honor anymore. You'll be replaced."
Betty felt a sharp sting of pain and anger. "Fine. If that's how you feel, then maybe we shouldn't be friends anymore."
Veronica's face hardened. "Maybe you're right."
Betty stormed out of the bedroom, her face flushed with anger. "You're such a bitch, Veronica."
Veronica followed her out, shouting, "What did you just call me?"
Betty turned around, her eyes blazing. "You heard me. You're acting like a total bitch."
Veronica's voice trembled with rage. "Stop calling me a fucking bitch! We were supposed to be best friends forever."
Betty shook her head. "Maybe we were never really friends."
The room fell silent as the tension crackled in the air. Veronica's heart pounded in her chest. "Get out, Betty. Just leave."
Betty grabbed her things and left without another word. The remaining girls sat in stunned silence, the festive atmosphere shattered.
Veronica took a deep breath, trying to compose herself. "I'm sorry you all had to see that."
Emily stepped forward, placing a comforting hand on Veronica's shoulder. "It's okay, V. We're here for you."
Mindy nodded. "Yeah, we've got your back."
Veronica forced a smile. "Thank you. Now, let's try to salvage the rest of the night."
The girls tried to move past the awkwardness, but the evening never fully recovered. Veronica felt a deep sense of loss, knowing her friendship with Betty might never be the same again. As the night wore on, Veronica realized that while the wedding was supposed to be a celebration of love and friendship, it had also brought out unexpected tensions and challenges.
The next morning, Veronica woke up with a heavy heart. She knew she had a lot to think about and some difficult conversations ahead. But for now, she had to focus on the future and the wedding that lay ahead.
