The following morning started similarly to the one before however, Emily was currently bouncing Lily gently standing next to the bed while JJ heated her up some milk. Typically she drank milk with her breakfast like the rest of her siblings but when the kids were overly tired or upset, warm milk helped them calm down. "I know, bug. I know, shh, shh, shh. You're okay baby girl," Emily soothed.
Normally the mothers would avoid giving the kids a dose of Tylenol followed by milk, but Lily wasn't sick, she was in pain from her boo-boo so it was okay. They just wanted her to get a bit more sleep as it was still early in the morning, and far too early for their little bug to be up for the day even though she went to bed hours before bedtime last night.
"Me boo-boo, mommy," Lily cried, pointing to the pink band-aid type thing on her arm, then down to her knee too. She didn't know what happened or why her arm was wrapped up, she just knew her knee hurt and mommy said it would be all better.
"I know bug," Emily agreed, kissing Lily's temple. "You know who can cure all boo-boos?"
"Me no-no," Lily answered with a sleepy shrug.
Emily made a big deal of bringing the turtle up from around her back and kissing Lily's face with it in hopes of her daughter smiling. "Doe-doe is going to make you feel all better, peanut."
Lily started giggling when Emily peppered kisses to her face using the stuffy right when JJ walked back into their room with some warmed up milk. "Can momma give some healing kisses too?" JJ asked.
Lily pushed herself up off Emily's chest a bit to look at her mom and gave it some serious thought before answering. "Doe-doe mabip, momma. Dis foah me?" she then asked, looking at the milk.
JJ lightly laughed and nodded, handing over the milk as she ran her fingers through Lily's hair as the little one tipped her head right back and drank it readily the way the twins did. "No kisses from me, got it," JJ mumbled.
"I'll take some of your kisses, Jen. Even if they aren't magic like this ones," Emily winked, wiggling the turtle back and forth before Lily snatched it from her mother to snuggle with while drinking her milk.
"Oh yeah? Do you have a boo-boo I don't know about?" JJ teased.
"I'm sure I could think of something," Emily responded.
"You're so bad, Emily Prentiss."
"And yet, you love me anyways."
"You know I do."
"I love you too, Jennifer."
By the time everyone was ready for the day, Lily had showed all her siblings her super pretty pink band-aid not knowing most of them had already seen it when she had gotten home last night. To her benefit, they played along which was very sweet. While changing her bandage and putting on the waterproof one, Emily only let Clarke and Oliver in because they were the least squirmy out of their bunch.
Well, Lily also wanted grandpa who came along, and Gerald felt very honored to be chosen out of everyone. He had held Lily's other hand while the doctor stitched her knee even though she wasn't awake, something Emily told her daughter about this morning. Emily explained what stitches were in the most simple way she could and looked up once more at her daughter before taking off the bandage.
She was being so brave holding onto her brother and sister's hands while sitting in her grandfather's lap. Emily wanted to cover all her bases here and that meant making sure the toddler was in an adults arms in case she lost consciousness seeing the stitches. It was one thing to talk about them and another to see them in your own body especially when you're just a little one. Lily may talk a big game for a toddler, but she is just a baby still.
"It's okay, Lily. Squeeze my hand super tight when mommy pulls the band-aid off," Oliver said.
"You're doing great, Lil. Look, mom's almost done," Clarke said a few seconds later when she saw more of her sister's knee appear.
Lily had a death grip on her sibling's hands and her poor little body was shaking like a leaf, but she was doing extremely well. This was new to all of them; none of the Prentiss children had ever gotten stitches before. Lily was also the most squeamish Prentiss child, even as a baby she wasn't a huge fan of certain textures when they touched her so the thought of seeing stitches was causing her a mixture of fear and excitement seeing as it was new.
Sometimes with art projects Lily would abruptly freak out if her hands became too messy, the same thing would happen if she was working with a new material she didn't like, sometimes even if Oakley or Amelia's hands or workspace didn't fit in with her plans she'd say it was 'too no dat'. She felt similarly if Oliver got a boo-boo at soccer and while she worried if he was okay, Lily wanted nothing to do with seeing it. Lily's strong opinions made her who she was though, and her mothers wouldn't ever want to change that.
"Do you want to match with doe-doe, or should she have her own butterfly today?" Emily asked, hoping to take her daughter's attention off what she was doing.
"Umm…" Lily said. "Me fink, umm…"
"Here, let's see which ones there are to pick from," Clarke suggested, grabbing the two boxes of band-aids next to her and putting them in Lily's lap so she could see them.
"This one has lots of pink, Lily. Your favorite," Oliver pointed out.
"Yeah. An sparkwee," she added.
"Oh yeah, you'd be the most stylish person on the boat with all those sparkles," Clarke smiled.
"Can grandpa maybe wear one too?" Gerald chimed in.
Lily tipped her head back to look at him and giggled. "No grawnpwa, butfies for boo-boos an me haf one! You no haf a boo-boo so you no haf a butfie."
"How will I be as pretty as you if I don't have a sparkly butterfly to help me then?" he asked.
"Umm, me no-no. Me pwetty tause' me tome dat way wike Cwalk an Owwie an mommy…an maybe you tome dat way a wong time ado."
"So, what you're saying is, I'm old?" Gerald asked.
"Yeah!" Lily answered with no hesitation causing the other three to laugh.
"You know what Lily, you're right. I am old."
"Dats otay. Me no owld, but you is," she smiled.
Oliver too was smiling at the conversation while continuing to browse the different band-aids, he's been such an action figure, race car, dinosaur kid for so long he didn't really know there could be so many butterflies while Clarke truly got a look at the stitches. By the time Gerald placed a kiss to Lily's forehead, Emily had wrapped her knee in the waterproof material and they were ready to go.
"Okay my little jokester, ready to go swimming?" Emily asked, tossing Lily up in the air after lifting her out of her father's arms.
"No mommy, me butfie!"
"Oh gosh, how could I forget."
"I've got it mom," Clarke assured. She had the one Lily picked out and gently placed it on top of the bandage her mom had just put on. One it was set into place, she kissed above the boo-boo and handed Lily her turtle then they went out to join the chaos of everyone else running around to get things finished before leaving for the day on the water.
"Tanks Cwalk. Me luv you."
"I love you too, Lil."
"Oh my god, I never even thought of that," JJ said later while on the boat. Some conversations were easy to have with the kids around, others they waited until after the kids went to sleep for the night, some just depended on the children that were there. Right now, Gerald, Allen and Hotch were swimming with most of the big kids while the twins, Harper and Lily took a nap leaving Emily, JJ and Hayley able to speak freely.
"And he's ten," Emily commented, still mind blown by the fact neither she nor her father thought of it in the first place.
"Only my son," Hayley said, completely embarrassed.
"Oh Hayley, please don't," Emily assured her. She hated talking about money just as much, but this was too funny to her because Jack was the one who thought of it, not the adults in the situation. And the way he brought it up, I mean how cute was it, so innocent and childlike, it was adorable.
"I can walk you through it all," JJ continued. "I know how totally like, wow, it can be. My greatest piece of advice is, what a Prentiss wants a Prentiss gets, so just don't say no."
"You make it sound like you have it so bad, Jen," Emily said with a shake of her head, teasingly as she looked around at the yacht they were on out on the coast of Italy.
JJ rolled her eyes and ignored her wife and continued talking to Hayley. "When it comes to things most people spend years and years saving up and planning for, consider it taken care of while sipping your morning coffee. There are days I come home from work and Em asks me to sign a bunch of paperwork, I used to ask all about it and read every single word, but now I don't even bother."
"Paperwork for what?" Hayley enquired.
"For instance, Brookwood is a private school. You obviously pay tuition. Well, because Elizabeth and Gerald have donated so much to the school, they've given our children a 'scholorship' so we get a discounted rate. College funds have magically been set up which means the funds Em set up will now be trusts instead. You know how many estates and villas they have, it's not uncommon for one to randomly be signed over into our names just because. There's so much, but to be honest it makes my head spin so I let Em handle it," JJ explained, running her hand up and down Brynley's arm.
"My gosh," Hayley whispered, taking everything in, realizing how much of their lives will really change.
She and Hotch weren't struggling by any means, but they did think about the kid's futures often because it was important. Brookwood truly was the best school around and Jack absolutely loved it, but the tuition was a bit unexpected. Hotch and Hayley knew they'd figure something out because they always did, state school would be fine, and there were scholarships, money like this meant the sky was the limit for their children though which was truly special. Hayley and Hotch did feel similarly to JJ and even Emily regarding the situation, they didn't want to accept handouts. This however, was not a handout, this was family looking out for their own.
"Don't forget their dad's company too. Billions with a b," JJ added as an afterthought.
Emily wasn't really paying attention to the conversation. She was keeping an eye on everyone swimming while Lily slept in her arms. Even though she was having a great time, the little snuggle bug still only wanted mommy when she got out of the water which everyone understood. Each child goes one way or the other when they don't feel great, Lily will always be a mommy's girl, Emily's mini through and through.
There was truly no other place like this when it came to boating in Italy. The Amalfi Coast was absolutely beautiful, the water was so blue, warm, and the kids were having the best time. The scenery was perfect for those who preferred to stay dry, the yacht they rented offered plenty of shade for sleeping littles or those needing a sun break, space to spread out as a family of so many with a staff of three, and a fully stocked drink fridge with space for guests to store their own food which worked perfectly for the family who packed plenty.
"Come swimming with us, mommy!" Oliver called out.
"After lunch, baby. I promise," Emily answered.
"What is for lunch?" he asked.
"We have a few different pasta dishes—pesto, caponata and Genovese basil. Then we have some fruits and veggies, chips and seven dip, and I think grandma made two or three different types of sandwiches."
"Three," Sandy supplied. "Turkey and cheese, chicken salad, and some pb and j's."
Sandy was like Emily in that way, she always made enough food to feed an army. While she only had five children, she had boys first which prepared her for the constant hunger that came with growing kids. She liked to be prepared and always knew the food wouldn't go to waste because someone would be back for more later.
"Green noodles?" he asked.
"No buddy, this is pesto. We had it in Venice, you and Clarke shared some I think," Emily recalled incorrectly; try as she might, she couldn't remember everything.
"That was me, mommy, not Clarke," Amelia piped up. "Remember Ollie, it's kinda like a green cheesy sauce."
"Oh yeah, I liked that. I want that for lunch mommy, please."
"Sorry sweet girl. And you got it, buddy. Actually, this is a good idea. Let me put your sister down and take everyone's orders so by the time you get dried off, we'll have lunch ready for you," she continued.
"I can do it, honey," Elizabeth offered.
And while Emily appreciated it, she knew her kids liked things a particular way and suggested her mom stay with Lily because that would be more helpful. Sandy understood the kids requests in a way Elizabeth just couldn't as Sandy truly raised her own children instead of paying someone to raise them for her like Elizabeth did with Emily.
Once Emily had the orders for all the kids and grandfathers, she looked at Hotch and said, "What'll be bro."
The kids laughed and she winked at them; it was fun teasing Hotch as no matter what Emily said, somehow, he was never expecting it. She didn't know how it still surprised him if she was being honest, but it was funny. "Well sis, I'll take some caponata and a turkey sandwich please."
"Yikes, someone's not worried about his figure much," she teased, rubbing a hand over her flat stomach. "Pasta and a sandwich, you're not a growing boy anymore you know."
"This coming from the woman who's been sunbathing for the last few hours while I've swam with all these crazy kids," he retorted
JJ appeared next to her wife after Hotch's comment holding Brynley who was now awake and waving at her siblings and said, "Hey buddy, look at this!" JJ pointed to her wife's abs and counted, "1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6. That's one for all but this little one and her twin. You know what she does to work out? Takes care of the kids," she answered, sticking out her tongue.
Emily and JJ were both very lean, ripped women. Abs appeared not because of spending hours in the gym but from carrying children up and down the stairs, from one room to the other, buckling and unbuckling them into the car—lifting backpacks and groceries, cleaning up toys, doing laundry, etc. And then genetics they were blessed with.
"Woah, woah, woah," Hotch said, continuing to tread water with Oakley now in his arms. "I was just giving you my lunch order like everyone else. What is happening here?"
"I think mommies are sayin' your tummy is kinda big," Oakley said with a giggle after poking it.
"You think so?" Hotch teased giving her tummy a poke back, and she nodded.
"Oakley is right, Aaron. Do you really need a sandwich and pasta?" Hayley said, now joining the women at the side of the boat.
Hayley actually did care unlike everyone else who was just giving him a hard time. She was grateful her children's nutrition only seemed to improve around their cousins besides the popsicles Allen snuck them however, Hotch had definitely splurged with all the carbs and desserts which was dangerous on an extended vacation. Hayley knew going back to a normal diet after enjoying so many treats was difficult and her husband would be very disappointed with his regular portion sizes if he didn't start cutting back before they headed home.
"Fine, put me down for just the pasta then," he conceded.
"I'll split a sandwich with you," Gerald whispered to him when the women walked away to get started on the list.
"Oh good, I won't starve."
"I don't think that's possible, Uncle Aaron. Mommy and grandma always make so much food there's always extras," Amelia said, not catching onto his sarcasm.
"Thank you honey," he smiled.
Emily made sure she touched base with Hayley while putting lunch together to let her know not to worry about the money side of things while on vacation, they could work everything out at a later date. She knew it could be very overwhelming, but she'd be more than happy to sit down with the family accountant and go over everything with her the same way she did with Jen. Hotch was similar to herself and their father, he'd process it in his own way, sign the paperwork, then never give it much of any thought.
Jen and Hayley needed more than that though and that made sense because neither came from this world. Hotch didn't either, he did however understand it due to his background in law, some of the clients he's worked with, and even his internship with the elder Prentiss's back in the day. Emily being so close with Hayley would sit down and go over everything with her and the accountant together, or let Hotch do it, whatever Hayley preferred.
"De-de mama!" Brynley squealed.
"Lily's sleeping, baby," JJ said, kissing the top of Brynley's head.
"No! De-de," she repeated, pointing to her sister who was dragging her blankie towards them while rubbing her sleepy eyes.
"Hi bug, did you have a good nap in the sun?" Emily asked while continuing to plate up some fruit for the kids. They had plenty of shade so nobody got burnt but the little one had started out in the sun for the first bit of her nap.
"Mhm. Is dat s'getti for me?" she asked standing on her tiptoes to see what her mommy was making as JJ lifted the blanket up so Lily wouldn't inadvertently trip and hurt her other knee.
"Would you like some s'getti?" JJ questioned, using Lily's cute mispronunciation of the word spaghetti.
"Yeah…pease," she nodded, leaning against her mom while snuggling doe-doe. JJ carefully scooped Lily up into her arms too and she cuddled both girls as lunch continued to get plated.
Emily readjusted Brooks and smiled at her daughter, "How about some strawberries too, bug?"
"Umm, yeah," Lily agreed, pushing her hair out of her face. Emily noted she'd have to redo Lily's braids before she went swimming so they wouldn't end up with a tangled mess later; honestly, she didn't know how Lily and Oakley managed to play so hard that their hair came undone so quickly some days but today was one of them for Lily. It always meant an extra good nap or play day if Emily redid their hair so she'd mark that down as a win in her book.
Back at home, things were getting messy. Well, messier considering Stratton had left a trail of bodies leading the team out to an abandoned home he had rented which was where they all were now. It was evident Samuel was in on things and that changed the profile entirely as he was very different from Stratton however, Reid was surprised by the amount of overlapping desires they both exhibited.
"They all deserved it!" Stratton screamed, clearly losing his cool unlike Samuel who was sitting in one of the armchairs with his legs crossed and sipping what appeared to be scotch.
"Stratton, calm down," Samuel said, calmly. "There's no need for the gun. They know what you've done and why you've done it, you can relax."
"They don't get it, Samuel! They keep asking stupid questions," Stratton said, pacing back and forth while the team watched with their guns still drawn.
Believe it or not, Samuel telling the team not to worry about Stratton's gun didn't ease their fears any regarding him having one, they'd much prefer he put it down. And yes, they were going to continue asking if he could put the gun down, and to talk to them about the murders he'd committed in the past 24 hours because it was their job. What nobody was clear on was whether Samuel realized Stratton had snapped in the most recent months and used him to do his own dirty work, or they were each sick and twisted.
"Everyone knew, they all knew," Stratton continued, hitting his hands against his head with his eyes tightly shut as the memories from his childhood played through his mind.
"Who knew, Stratton. What did they all know?" Rossi questioned.
"They all knew and didn't do anything," he said, dropping onto his knees and in the process, Stratton's gun flew across the floor.
Luke quickly retrieved and secured it as Rossi knelt next to Stratton to figure out what was going on. The team had easily been able to work out the murder of Sanders and Shelly, but the four bodies out front were a bit different. They didn't have a clear picture and it was evident there were even more bodies from the note Stratton had left with his parents bodies. "What did they all know?" Rossi asked again.
Samuel snickered and when he did, Stratton's eyes went blank but not cold the way a killers do, more so empty, hallow, almost lifeless. Samuel's eyes on the other hand turned cold as ice and sent chills through everyone on the team when he answered for his brother, "That he's poison."
"Get this asshole up," Morgan said and watched as Matt and Luke got Samuel to his feet and cuffed him.
"Strike a nerve?" Samuel tested.
Matt tightened the cuffs and not so accidentally walked him into the door on the way out to the car while Rossi and Tara tried to get Stratton to open up again. It was as if Samuel powered him down somehow, like he had an off switch. "Stratton, hey can you look at me?" Tara asked.
Rossi clapped loudly in hopes that the sudden noise may startle him into snapping back. "Stratton, come back to us kid. Come on, tell me about these dead bodies you left out front. Don't you want to kill more people?"
"Really?" Tara questioned, tilting her head to the side.
"Thought I'd give it a shot. It's not like he's listening to us anyways."
"Actually, studies show the brain processes information even when—"
Rossi looked back at Reid and then winced; he'd completely forgotten the genius was present. For whatever reason, it slipped his mind. With this case, they've done a lot of work at the office and the work they've done in the field, well, having Matt and Luke there to help meant Reid has been able to continue working theories he otherwise wouldn't.
Reid came with them to the abandoned, yet fully decorated home with them though. That did surprise Dave if he was being honest. Not that Reid came, but the decorated home aspect; he assumed Samuel had an explanation for spending the unnecessary money. Rossi also didn't imagine Samuel expecting to go down for this, even though their profile was built for Stratton, they had to know what they were working with and that meant knowing all the players. Thanks to all the time spent in the office working on this case, there was no move he could make they weren't ready for.
"Thanks kid," Rossi said, putting an end to the fact before it began. "Alright, we aren't going to get anything from him so we take him in and get his brother talking."
Reid, Morgan and Tara nodded at Rossi's assessment then got Stratton to his feet and out to a car along with his brother. Before they left, Rossi took one more look around, saw the scotch and whistled. "That's one expensive bottle to waste."
The day on the ocean was just what the doctor ordered for Lily, for the whole family really. Clarke had taken a ton of pictures, the boys perfected their front and back flips, Amelia and Oakley laughed at how much harder it was for their brother and cousin to do tricks than it was for them, and the kids made up three new water games.
Dinner was eaten and everyone was currently lounging around outside together as the littles got their last wiggles out before bedtime, the adults joked over past memories and the children enjoyed some popsicles. "Dat bite too big grawmpa!" Lily scolded.
"You can have a bite of mine, Lil," Clarke offered. She knew her mom's preferred Lily to share with their grandfather because of the sugar, but she also saw the face Allen made after the bite he took and knew it was a mistake. "I know it's not strawberry, but coconut's better than nothing."
"I have strawberry," Jack said, running up to his cousin to offer up a bite of his.
Hotch and Hayley smiled at the interaction. Jack was an incredibly sweet little boy, that was never a question, they were very happy to see how much sweeter he has become in the last few years however. "Fank you. Me haf umm, dis one," Lily said, pointing to Jacks.
"Allen, you'd think after all these years of sharing popsicles the kids would get more than you," Sandy commented and he shrugged, offering an oopsies look at her.
After giving Lily a bite of his popsicle, Jack went back to where he was sitting next to Oliver and Hotch leaned forward in chair putting his hands on his son's shoulders and said, "That was really nice of you, buddy. I'm proud of you for sharing."
"That's just what family does, dad."
Hayley melted when she heard Jack's response and snuggled into her husband watching her little one get her wiggles out with the twins feeling very blessed. This had been an absolutely amazing vacation. She was married to the man of her dreams, they celebrated their fifteenth wedding anniversary in Paris of all places, and they were with their family. Hayley felt like these past eleven days were a long dream if she was being honest.
"Hey mom, what about Egypt?" Clarke asked.
After speaking with the team, they decided to extend their vacation by a few days and when Emily had told JJ, Clarke overheard. It wasn't a secret, the kids would have found out and the adults vowed not to talk about the case for that very reason. When they were home, routines were easy and while the occasional walk-in occurred, Emily and JJ had unfortunately become very good at coding work conversations around the kids.
Lily and Oakley were so young they didn't know better when there was drama in their lives besides Jessica and while Oakley experienced a few episodes afterwards, she's never brought it up since. Lily would have no way of knowing about Doyle, and doesn't remember Jessica either. Amelia never knew about Palmer, she knew a bad guy hurt her momma but never knew he was after her; Anderson was another guy she didn't know about.
Oliver was like his little sisters because although he was old enough to know about bad guys, he still didn't truly get it. When the kids say bye to JJ in the morning, they think of her protecting people and/or protecting them from bad guys and that's it. They don't think about the fact she's face to face with killers who may or may not want to cause her harm. Clarke though, she had that feeling about her dad and while Emily was able to brush it off and she believed her mom, the mothers became stricter regarding their shop talk. And while she too didn't know that's why they were on vacation, the mothers were happy they decided to avoid talking about the case because you never knew who may overhear you in an unfamiliar setting.
"Yeah, I think it would be so fun. Look at these pyramids," Amelia said, holding up the laptop to show her mom's what she and her sister had been researching.
When Emily and JJ relayed the news to the big kids, they asked if they could pick where to go next and much to their surprise, the mothers agreed. Emily had given them a checklist and if the kids could find a place that got 10 out of 15 checks, it was fair game. In other words, Emily had already done her own extensive research and knew there would be something for everyone which wasn't always easy as they were working with a large age range of children.
"Wait," Oliver exclaimed, standing up and nearly tripping over his own two feet to get to his mom's and sisters. "Jack come here," he said, falling into JJ's arms knowing she'd catch him. "Can I look, Lia?"
"Mhm," she nodded, handing him the laptop.
He scrolled through the pictures and the boy's eyes went wide when they saw what apparently Oliver was looking for. "We've got to go, can we please?" Oliver asked.
"What am I missing here?" JJ questioned. Sure, Egypt sounded awesome to her as well but the boys were pumped and she wanted to know.
"Camels!"
Morgan sat across from Samuel who was still wearing a stupid smirk that Derek really wanted to smack the freak off his face. He had no right to be so damn cocky, Morgan was the stud around here. Emily was his best friend, and he hadn't seen her in nearly two weeks because of this fool and his brother. Derek knew it sounded lame, but he missed them. His little princesses and buddies were literally everything to him, it was almost embarrassing. He was a total mush; he would not let this asshole win though.
So he continued his stare down.
"Well, this is getting boring," Samuel finally said, and Morgan smiled.
Samuel's eyes sized the man in front of him up once again and he refolded his arms into a different position which told Morgan he was slowly starting to crack. "I don't even know why you have me here, Agent Morgan. My brother is a very sick man, as you can see," Samuel continued.
"I bet the only thing going through Morgan's mind right now is slapping the shit outta that dude," Luke said, watching the interrogation.
"No kidding," Matt agreed. "How long is he planning on staying silent?"
"As long as he can," Rossi answered. He knew Luke and Matt weren't naïve, they had never worked with the BAU team before though and they did things differently here sometimes and this one was of them. When the men heard sniffling behind them, three sets of concerned eyes turned to see Penelope standing there with tears streaming down her cheeks.
"Garcia?"
