Samuel heard the knock on the 2-way window and knew what it meant which caused him to gain some confidence back as he now once again had the upper hand. He crossed his legs and sat up that much straighter as he looked at his watch and said, "Ahh, right on time."
Morgan had already stood up when he heard the knock and while he hadn't even opened the case file he brought in, he did have it in his hand because he wasn't going to leave it in the room. Morgan paused when Samuel spoke as the word choice set off alarm bells. He knew his team wouldn't interrupt what he was doing in the interrogation room unless it was absolutely necessary as they already had a strategy so whatever was happening wasn't good.
"Tell me Agent Morgan, don't you want to know why my brother thought Emily Prentiss is such a poisonous weapon?" he smirked.
Morgan released his hold on the handle door and walked back over to the table to take a seat. He unfortunately knew if he got angry with this guy, he'd just shut down so staying calm was imperative. The profile would get them a confession not only on the murders, but to whatever was going on with Stratton as well. It wasn't as if the team felt badly for the man, he clearly was suffering mentally though so they'd get him some help while keeping him locked up in the process.
"What's right on time?" Morgan asked, bringing things back to the knock on the door.
If the team couldn't inform him what was going on, he'd try to get it out of Samuel. Realistically, Morgan knew the team could tell him however, they were very focused on the wording of the notes—poisonous and weapon were very specific words and finding reasons behind them were important because if they were important to the men, it would mean they were truly working alone. If not, the team would need to reevaluate and look for other people possibly helping the men which would be very bad.
"You see Agent Morgan—" Samuel said, clearly fine with taking all the time in the world to answer. Hell, maybe even taking him down an entirely different path just for the sake of it. "When I kid, all I wanted was power…"
Morgan listened to the man speak clenching his jaw in anger as he wasn't getting to the point, that much was clear. Stalling wasn't helping anyone. Morgan was wondering if Samuel would mention what the team found or Emily again before one of them pulled him out to show him whatever they found because right now it was a toss-up. Honestly, there was something about this guy too though. Morgan didn't know if it was because he was another one from the rich circle or what but he had a gut feeling. Either way, there was something and he knew if Emily was here she'd feel it too.
"…there's that type of poison," Samuel said, and Morgan focused back on the guy. "My parents made that poison, but it's nothing special. It breaks, obviously," he laughed. "We can't have that happening. Mine won't. Emily never broke, and she was one of the best weapons too," he continued, not realizing he slipped up.
"Yours won't?" Morgan questioned, and behind the 2-way Rossi wore his 'got ya' face.
While Morgan got to the bottom of what Samuel meant, the team worked on what Garcia found. It was possible they'd need help from the asshole Morgan was talking to, but they'd cross that bridge when they got to it. Rossi didn't celebrate long though because he knew what Morgan didn't, three victims were alive and counting on them to find them.
"Garcia?"
It wasn't often she left her lair. This case was different because she did spend a lot more time in the round table room with everyone however, when they went out into the field, she went back into her lair and that included most recently. Garcia had sent the coordinates of the abandoned house to their phones from her lair and kept an eye on everyone from there. She also ran facial recognition of the four bodies they found out front while doing a million other things, per usual.
Being a busy little bee was very typical for her. Leaving her lair wasn't. So, when she received an email from Stratton once they had the now mute man in an interrogation room, she was skeptical. She did a quick check to make sure nobody had hacked into her system and then opened the email gasping at what she saw as tears sprung into her eyes immediately.
Garcia grabbed her laptop and ran as fast as her heels allowed her down to the interrogation room through clouded glasses due to her tears and found Rossi, Matt and Luke there. Tara and Reid were trying to get through to Stratton again but she couldn't process that, all Garcia needed was to show someone what was on her screen.
She flipped the laptop around and the men looked at the screen then fired off a bunch of questions. Once they realized how upset Garcia was, Matt hugged her, Luke tried to dry her tears and then Rossi asked the questions again and she was able to answer them.
After that, Rossi gave everyone orders and they took off in different directions to get to work on finding the three people on Garcia's screen. Matt grabbed Reid and Tara from trying to get through to Stratton as they weren't getting anywhere anyways and besides Rossi, the rest of the team assembled around the round table.
Rossi however needed to stay and see what Morgan could get out of Samuel.
"Nothing from facial recognition, Garcia?" Tara questioned.
Garcia took a deep breath while her laptop did its scanning and shook her head as she frowned. "I can't find her anywhere."
"How would this not be reported? Two children and their—" Matt paused to think about his answer.
"Nanny," Luke supplied with a satisfied grin. When he saw Tara giving him a look he changed his answer, "Mother? Come on guys, she looks kind of young don't ya think?"
"Either way," Matt said, hoping to help his friend get out of the hot water he stepped in. "Think about it. There must be a father or another mother who would be worried—" he was very open to Emily and JJ's marriage, not to mention they weren't the only gay couple out there so he was covering all his bases here. "And even if the kids didn't have friends at school or go to any activities, someone would realize they were gone. Grandparents, aunts, uncles, someone, someplace would know if this mom or nanny even big sister and these two little children suddenly went missing or stopped showing up school."
"What if—"
While Luke continued with another theory, Reid thought about his own and looked at the pictures Garcia had printed from the email Stratton had sent them. The first was a file with multiple pictures of a specific location—it looked to be a two bedroom apartment however, there was no way out and that was made very clear by the locks on the door. The second file was a live video feed where they could see how little food was in the refrigerator and hear the 'I'm hungry' from the kids which broke their hearts.
"I need you to pull up a picture of Samuel," Reid interrupted, moving closer to Garcia.
When he was onto something, sometimes manners went right out the window and the team didn't take it personally. Actually, they never took anything personally when it came to Reid, he was just uniquely Spence. "Hold your horses, wonder boy," Garcia said, pulling one up on the screen.
Once she did, he asked her to print it then ran out of the room to get it leaving the rest of the team wondering what was going on for a few seconds. They then continued with Luke's theory again knowing if Reid had something, he'd let them know.
"Do you really know who Emily is, Agent Morgan?" Samuel questioned. He had steered the conversation away from his slip up and gone on another tangent that Morgan had been forced to listen to.
"I'm sure you're going to tell me," Morgan mumbled.
There wasn't anything Samuel could tell him that he didn't already know about Emily at this point though. When she first started on the team, Emily kept a lot from everyone, but he understood for the most part. It hurt a bit that she didn't trust him enough to tell him about Lily however, once Emily gave Morgan a bit more information, he got it. The relationship between she and JJ was another thing, then again, nobody else on the team was as vocal as he was about women.
They went through a lot as a team whether it was cases, things with Strauss, injuries, or other things that came up but they always worked it out. And then there was Doyle. He threw Morgan more than anything for a million reasons and if he was being honest with himself, that one took him a minute to work through. Once again, Morgan understood why Emily didn't and couldn't tell anyone however, Doyle was a big one.
Samuel laughed a bit and clasped his hands together as he leaned forward on the interrogation table. "Yes, Agent Morgan. Yes, I am. Emily Prentiss is not who she says she is. You have no idea what she's capable of, but I do. Did you know she killed a hard-working single father in cold blood? All he was trying to do was provide for his family and she killed him. He never made it home to his son that day…because of Emily."
Morgan refused to show any emotion when Samuel spoke but inside his body was feeling it; his heart rate was picking up, he had to work to keep his feet rooted to the floor instead of jumping up to go ask Garcia to look into it, and he was biting his tongue to prevent himself from speaking.
Outside the 2-way, Rossi's phone rang and his eyes went wide when he heard what the person said, "Repeat that for me, Garcia."
"I received another email. Emily just shot and killed a man—"
"That's impossible, she's with her family Garcia."
"I haven't had time to put it through my software yet, you're probably right—"
"Of course I'm right!" Rossi exclaimed.
He didn't know how this jagoff was pulling all of these strings, he seemed so ahead of them and Rossi hated when killers had the upper hand in any way. Samuel was pinning everything on his brother, and while doing so, he was also focusing on Emily to get under Morgan's skin—the game was up, Rossi was rolling up his sleeves and going in because he had had enough of this bullshit.
"No, me do it by meself, mommy!" Lily said, clutching her turtle tighter and stomping her little foot.
Emily made eye contact with her wife who was trying not to laugh then looked at their daughter who was stubbornly sure she was going to ride a camel all by herself and said, "Lily bug, I'm sorry but you cannot ride by yourself."
Before the full temper tantrum could start, Emily scooped Lily up and the little girl laid her head against her mommy's chest seeking comfort in the closeness as her back was rubbed. "Shh, shh, shh, it's okay. We're going to have so much fun, look let's go see the camels," the mother said. Emily continued to soothe Lily who was now playing with her necklace while everyone else figured out who was going with who. Normally they made these types of decisions before getting to their activities however, the girls weren't as confident because these were animals they weren't familiar with.
"I don't wanna go alone," Amelia said, shaking her head. She had both her arms wrapped around one of JJ's while looking at the camels with her sisters and while Oliver and Jack were mesmerized, she was a bit nervous.
"You don't have to sweet girl," JJ assured, kissing her temple.
"I do!" Oakley said. And somehow, that didn't surprise JJ. That shy itty bitty thumb sucking three year old who came to them almost four years ago was now an outgoing, loud, daredevil who was up for anything her siblings were.
"Oaks is riding alone?" Clarke chimed in, peeking around her mom to see her little sister.
"Yeah!" she nodded.
"Woah. Watch out for you," Clarke teased, then asked her other sister, "Who do you want to ride with?"
"Umm, I'm not sure. Who is taking Lily?" Amelia asked JJ.
Sandy and Elizabeth had stayed home with the twins and Harper for this activity; neither cared much about riding on a camel and they knew the littles wouldn't be able to go so the women offered which was great because their husbands really wanted to go. Hayley was very skeptical about leaving Harper only because she'd never been alone with the women before. Granted, the twins would be there too but still, she didn't want to cause a problem for them. Sandy assured Hayley the little girl would be absolutely fine and to go have fun. Due to this, Amelia knew her moms didn't have to worry about the twins but Lily was another story.
"Who do you want to go with, honey?" JJ asked; there were plenty of adults and she was certain they could figure out something if Amelia and Lily wanted the same one.
"You or mommy," Amelia answered.
"We'll make sure that's who you go with then, okay?" JJ promised, wrapping her arms around Amelia.
"I'm gonna ride that one, dad," Jack said with a laugh. "Look."
Hotch followed his son's line of sight and smiled. The boys were so excited for this and he has a feeling it had a lot to do with the fact they did class project on Egypt at the end of school together. They were fascinated by the camels and pyramids while doing the project and it was evident seeing everything in person made it ten times better.
"He looks like a good choice, buddy," Hotch responded.
"Has this little one made a decision?" JJ whispered to her wife signaling to Lily who was still in Emily's arms.
"I'll take her," Emily mouthed. Sometimes it was better to make decisions for the littles to avoid feeling too many emotions at once. JJ nodded and Amelia smiled, she was happy she was going to be able to ride with her mom because there was just something about this that made her a bit nervous. She was absolutely sure neither of her moms would let her fall off though and that was what scared her most.
About ten minutes later their group was called and a few changes were made at the last minute although, if you asked Emily, she would have seen it coming. Oakley's confidence lasted until they got her onto the camel and then she quickly changed her mind—thankfully for her, Auntie Hayley kicked Uncle Aaron into gear and gave him a shove to get his butt onto the camel with her which made Oakley feel much safer.
The boys were good to go by themselves, as was Clarke. Amelia felt comfortable however, noted it was probably because JJ was with her and didn't want to try it by herself and Emily wondered if she'd even leave at all with Lily because little miss gung ho was shaking like a leaf.
"Lily bug, mommy's got you. What's going on baby, do you want to stay here instead?" Emily asked her.
"Doe-doe fall off?" she questioned.
"No bug, doe-doe is perfectly safe," Emily answered. She knew when Lily found it hard to communicate or express what was going on with herself, she used the turtle and that was fine. They taught the children to use whatever helped them best and doe-doe was what worked for Lily.
"Otay." And with that, Lily took her three breaths, and her body started to calm down.
Three breaths were used by everyone in the family, even the twins understood the concept. They were however like Lily in the sense that taking a deep breath didn't exactly happen when they did the exercise, but they knew enough to focus on a few regular ones.
"Wet's doe!" Lily said, now feeling much better.
The family had inadvertently held their own breath watching Lily do her own three breaths and were surprised by her sudden change in demeanor. They didn't know what was going to happen and would be so sad if she didn't want to go because she was always so excited to do everything her big siblings did.
The dynamic definitely changed when Lily wasn't around; there was a difference when Oakley was with the big kids and when she wasn't, but not so much where you noticed a huge shift like when Lily was or wasn't with them. The kids didn't know why and while some would assume age, others might guess sass, personality or volume level. It was truly just a combination of everything because she fed off her siblings the most as she was at that spongy age.
"You heard the boss, let's go," Clarke said, recovering first. And off they went.
"Brynley, we don't take toys from our brother. That's not nice," Sandy gently reminded the little one from her patio chair where she and Elizabeth were sitting and watching the littles play.
"ME!" she squealed.
"Brynley, by the count of three I want to see you give that toy back please," Sandy continued. "1…"
Elizabeth and Sandy watched as Brynley stared her grandmother down, "2…" the baby didn't budge… "Brynley Grace." And with that, she not only sat back down onto her bottom but she handed her brother back the toy. "Thank you for giving Brooks back the toy."
"Testy little girl," Elizabeth commented.
"She reminds me of JJ," Sandy said with a laugh. "The kids used to get so frustrated with her because she'd take their things and play with them—" Sandy looked over at Elizabeth and realized the woman had absolutely no idea what she meant because not only was Emily an only child but Elizabeth didn't raise her.
"The age difference between Clarke and the twins is similar between Johnathan and JJ; because of that, when JJ was growing up, she used to go into her brothers rooms, steal some of their things, bring them into her room and have a ball for hours. But when they'd get home from school, you can only imagine how they took it especially when JJ tore their rooms apart to find something special to play with."
"Oh yes," Elizabeth said, now understanding what Sandy meant.
The Prentiss children did occasionally get upset over a shared toy, more so Lily and Oakley, the twins however took things to an entirely different level because most all of their toys were shared. Each Prentiss child had their own set of cloth bins and then they had a shared wall—their own sets contained toys for their age range, gender didn't matter because they had a neutral household, but age did and if you weren't old enough you could not go in the bins. The shared wall was fair game for everyone which meant the toys were safe for all ages. If someone pulled a toy out and it didn't get put away and the twins picked it up, they wouldn't choke or find a way to get hurt with it because it was marked safe.
The twins however had all the same toys. Emily and JJ didn't buy a lot of toys for Brooks and Brynley at first because they wanted to see what they were drawn to. If they'd be drawn to the same things or different, why would they buy duplicates if there was no reason to or a bunch of new toys when they already had so many that were marked safe already. No matter what they chose to do though, they couldn't win. If they had two of the same toy and for example Brooks was holding it and Brynley wanted it and stole it, the mothers couldn't just give Brooks the second one, he'd want the one Brynley stole and if they gave it back to him and gave Brynley the second one, she'd still want the one her brother had. It was a mess and only a twin thing because they'd never had this problem before.
"You know, I realize they have no relation to Emily however, sometimes I can see her too," Elizabeth commented.
Sandy smiled and nodded. "I know what you mean. I can see the girls in all our grandchildren, they work their magic in a way that's so special."
"I know how Jennifer became so special, but I have no earthly idea where Emily came from."
Before Sandy could respond, Brynley screamed, "No-no blalalala!" Whatever she was saying to Brooks looked very intense and the little boy looked back at her and babbled back just as loudly in their made up language that made absolutely no sense to anyone but them. When he wound back and was about to throw what was in his hand, Elizabeth got up and made her way over to him.
"Brooks Morgan, we do not throw," she said, making a disgusted face at the handful of dirt she now had in her own hand. Elizabeth found the divot he had made and patted the dirt back in then picked Brooks up making sure the offending hand was far away from her so she wouldn't get dirty. "Oh Brooks, you sure do know how to make a mess."
"Me!" he giggled.
"This is not a laughing matter. Messes are not a good thing, Brooks," she lectured.
Realistically Elizabeth knew kids made messes, but she couldn't help herself sometimes especially when it came to the things Brooks got himself into. Sandy always joked that Elizabeth was lucky she had a girl but it wasn't actually a joke because she never would have survived with a boy nevermind multiple; they attract messes like it's their job and Brooks takes it to the next level.
While Elizabeth practically took the hose to Brooks, aka a pack of wipes, Sandy's phone rang and she spoke to Hayley about Harper who was happily playing with Brynley. "Everything is fine here, honey. I told you there would be nothing to worry about, she's having a fantastic time."
"Brooks no!" Elizabeth nearly screamed which was followed by a smash.
"Hayley, I'm going to need to call you back. No, everything is fine. We had a little accident with a tipped over iced tea glass, no need to panic. Have fun."
"There's no way," Morgan seethed, now standing with his arms crossed listening to the newest information the team had uncovered.
"Morgan, we—"
"It's not possible! I am telling you there is no way Emily murdered a freakin' child, she just didn't. I don't care how deep her cover was, she'd find a way around it."
Morgan paced around a bit and the team watched him as they had already taken the information in whereas he hadn't, and while nobody wanted to believe it, the proof Garcia had been emailed was hard to dispute. They didn't know what happened while she was undercover though and knew whatever happened she'd already torn herself up about. It wasn't something they could judge her on because they didn't know what it was like, they didn't know the story and wouldn't until they spoke with her.
"The Emily I know would literally take her own life before murdering a child. Have you all lost your damn minds. We're talking about Em here," he continued. Morgan picked up the picture Garcia had printed and held it up, "Look at this and tell me what you see. Wanna know what I see? I see a boy who looks similar to Oliver and you think Emily murdered him, no way. No freakin' way in hell. Screw this."
Morgan tossed the picture and stormed out of the room. He understood that Rossi wanted to be the one to make the phone calls to Emily because even if they weren't always at the same time of day, they would at least be from the same person but this couldn't wait. Morgan was going to call Emily and he was going to get to the bottom of this right now...
