I was currently getting ready for school when Rose walked into the room.
"Do you think I made the right decision cutting my hair?" She asked. I thought it looked pretty much the same. She might have taken an inch off, but it looked pretty much exactly like it did before.
"So, Caleb is a little of trouble." I remarked as I held the newspaper. That was much more important than her stupid haircut.
"Damn that stylist. She makes my head look too big." She added. I sighed. "How do you work with this mirror?"
For starters, she was using the wrong mirror. The good one was in the bathroom.
"Do you seriously not care at all that our grandpa is in jail?" I inquired. Her self-centeredness was reaching a whole new level.
"I know I was in that picture, but I got cut out because of my hair." She remarked.
"It's good to know you care." I stated.
"It'll grow back." She said.
"We are talking about Caleb." I replied. It was kind of sad that I cared more about Caleb than his granddaughter that was actually related to him. "You know you're never going to get Summer back if all you care about is yourself."
"My God, Summer was right." She realized.
"What did Summer say?" I asked. I must have missed that conversation and she didn't tell me either.
"That I was a selfish bitch." She explained. Well I probably wouldn't use those particular words about her. "Here I am going on and on about my haircut when my grandpa is in the big house. I'm a monster because I'm all I think about it."
"The first step is realizing you have a problem." I told her. I couldn't help but wonder if her therapist had said that to her.
"Talk to me about anything besides me." She ordered. I tried to think about what I could talk about.
"Well Olivia Rodrigo is in my theatre class." I remarked.
"I don't even know who that is. We have a real crisis on our hands." Rose replied. "Why didn't you just tell me?"
"I can't tell you when you don't listen." I remarked.
"I have to change that then." She declared. "I have to be a better person."
"How are you gonna do that?" I asked as I went to get my purse. I didn't think that she would just be able to change overnight.
"I need to be less selfish. You know less pitching more catching." She explained. I wasn't entirely if she understood the metaphor that she was making. I definitely didn't understand it.
"I'm used to it. You don't have to change for me." I declared as I packed my bag.
"They're not for you." She stated.
"For who then? Summer?" I questioned.
"I think they're for the greater good of man." She replied.
"So, there's no hidden agenda here?" I asked. I didn't buy that she just wanted to better herself for no reason.
"What hidden agenda?" Kaitlin inquired as she walked in and gave me a kiss. She was wearing uniform just like I was.
"Rose wants to be less self-centered so Summer will like her." I replied.
"No, it's for the greater good of humanity." Rose argued. "I don't even want Summer back…unless that is what she wants. In which case that's not about me…that's about me supporting her and her wanting something."
"Should we tell her she's already failing?" Kaitlin whispered.
"No." I whispered back. She did have enough hot air to lift a balloon though.
Later, the three of us were at school in the coffee line. It seemed like Kaitlin was still the only one who wanted to be seen with us. Well I was pretty sure that people wanted to hang out with me, but they didn't like Rose and I was not going to abandon my sister when she had no idea friends.
"Kaitlin, what would you like?" Rose asked my girlfriend.
"Are you buying?" I asked. That would be different of her.
"No, but I'm letting you two order first." She answered. "I may be selfless but I'm still pretty stingy."
I wasn't going to tell her that that was a Jewish stereotype. It was a few seconds before she spoke again.
"I'll have a large coffee." She said. We both looked at her. She was not doing very well so far. "I'm moving things along."
"How are the smoothies?" I questioned. I then realized that the longer that this took, the more we would have to deal with Rose being annoying. "You know we'll just take two."
At that point, she grabbed a flier off of the table. That was the first time I had ever seen anyone read one of those.
"There's a new club at the pier that Hey Monday is playing at." She stated. What? How did I not know about it? When did they get back together? "You who loves Hey Monday?"
"Rhiannon?" Kaitlin guessed.
"Well yes, but also Summer." Rose replied. That was because I got her into them. I never thought that they would get back together though.
"Summer's going out with Lindsay." I pointed out. "She's not going to want to go with you."
"Then I'll buy her and Lindsay tickets." She reasoned. That would be selfless, but I knew that she would be doing it for selfish reasons.
"Why?" Kaitlin asked.
"To show that I am a good friend and that I am selfless." She stated. "If it happens to lead her my way, that'll be great."
She then walked away leaving us by ourselves.
"She's delusional." Kaitlin commented before taking a sip of her smoothie. "These are really good."
"So how does Marissa feel about the whole arrest thing?" I questioned.
"It's nothing that she hasn't dealt with before." She commented. I was pretty sure that she still didn't really like Caleb.
"You know it seems like your mom doesn't have the best taste in men." I joked. I hoped that we were at the point that the Jimmy stuff was water under the bridge and she wouldn't be offended by it.
"You forget that it was her overspending that led my dad to embezzle in the first place." She declared.
Later, I went to my locker, which seemed to be right next to Holly's. I wasn't sure how that happened. She was looking at Lindsay.
"Is it wrong that I'm jealous for wanting Summer's girlfriend." She asked. "I mean I haven't been with a girl since Marissa, but she looks so fine."
"You know she's a lot like Rose without being self-centered." I pointed out.
"Which makes her the perfect girl." She countered. Rose would probably tell her to date Lindsay so she could date Summer. I still wasn't sure why she wasn't trying to win Summer back. Yes she had her and lost her to another girl, but she had also obsessed over for many, many years.
"Well I have to go to my theatre class." I responded. Holly wasn't taking it this year. "I'll see you later."
I then went to class and found that there was a bunch of computers in the room. I took a seat and looked at the screen. I was pretty sure that we were going to be having a script-writing assignment.
"Mind if I sit here?" A voice asked. It was the girl that I was kind of afraid of and kind of jealous of. "So you're Rhiannon right? You were on The Valley?"
"What are you doing here?" I questioned. "I mean why do you want to go to school here?
"The same reason that you're here. I want a sense of normalcy in my life." Olivia declared. "Disney wants me to be on this new show for them, but I haven't decided yet."
"So have you ever tried to write a script before?" I asked. Maybe there was no reason for me to be jealous of her. She just seemed like a normal girl to me.
"I'm not much of a writer, but that's the thing about high school. You find out things that you like that you like." She said. "Well let me clarify, I'm not much of a screenwriter. I've written a few songs but I don't know if they're good."
"Alright, everyone welcome to the class. I am Miss Singleton." The teacher greeted us. The first thing that I noticed was that she was Australian…or British, but I was pretty sure she was Australian. I also noticed that the class was dominantly female. "For starters, I'd like for you to get to know the person sitting next to you and write a short summary about them including their name, interests, and whatever else you can think of. The easiest way to create characters is from people you know."
I had to note that it was kind of ironic that the two people who were actually in the industry were going to be working together.
"So how long have you been acting for?" I asked her.
"I was seven when I first got to be in an Old Navy commercial." She explained. "Then a few years ago. Do you mind if I ask you a personal question?"
I shouldn't have been surprised that she knew. It was kind of a big thing.
"I knew that I was trans probably around the same time that you started acting." I answered. "I didn't know what it was at that point, but I knew that I was a girl, even though I didn't tell anyone."
"Thanks, but that's not what I was going to ask you." She responded. Oh. "What's it like having Graham Johnson for a father?"
"He's never been my father." I explained. "He abandoned me when I was too young to remember him and now I have a real father."
After school, Kaitlin had to work, so Olivia came with Rose and I to this Bait Shop place. I personally thought it was a weird name since no one went fishing in Newport.
"Wait, this is the place we saw Hey Violet." I remembered. I had tried to black out a lot of those memories because unfavorable incidents.
"I would have killed to see Hey Violet." Olivia remarked. "I made a few friends on School of Rock, but I wasn't able to go when they played."
"Is anyone here?" Rose asked. There didn't seem to be anyone around.
We did find one person. It was a tall, Asian woman with a purple streak in her hair wearing headphones.
"Hello, we're here about tickets." Rose remarked. The woman didn't respond.
"She's wearing headphones." I pointed out. I thought it didn't need to be said, but apparently Rose didn't notice that.
Rose then went over to her and tapped her on the shoulder. I was glad that I didn't do it because she turned around and put her in a headlock.
"Touch me again and I will kill you." She replied. She then looked at us and took off her headphones. "What do you want?"
"Tickets to Hey Monday." I answered.
"They're sold out. Sorry." She responded. Damn it. I really wished that someone had told me before.
"All done, Alex." Some guy in front of a microphone said.
"Alright, here are your tickets." Alex replied before she handed him an envelope presumably containing tickets.
"Why does he get tickets?" Rose inquired.
"He works here." Alex pointed out.
"You know I think that you want us at your show because it can come with free publicity." Olivia remarked.
"I have no idea who any of you are." Alex stated. Maybe she didn't watch TV or show.
"My name is Rhiannon Cohen and I'm on The Valley." I explained.
"I've never seen it." Alex declared.
"What about me? I'm YouTuber and actress Olivia Rodrigo?" Oliva asked.
"Still haven't heard of you, but maybe we can make a deal." Alex replied. "I'm going to look at your social media and if I feel that you can give me what I need, then I'll give you some tickets."
Alex then walked away. Well it wasn't a no. She didn't ask how many tickets we needed though.
"Olivia, just so we're clear, Hey Monday is probably my favorite band ever. I know that the goal was for Rose to get some tickets for Summer and Lindsay, but you better get some for me."
"Wow, you can be scary for someone so small." Olivia noted. "So why are you trying to get these tickets for your ex-girlfriend anyway?"
"It's to show that I can be selfless." Rose remarked.
"She's trying to win her back." I commented.
"I am not." Rose argued. "I am just trying to be a good friend to her and support her new relationship."
The next morning, I was working on my assignment while Dad was having breakfast.
"Look at you doing homework at the breakfast table." He remarked.
"I've got a script-writing assignment for this year. You know I actually have a class I'm excited to go to." I stated.
"Why's that?" He asked.
"It's because I'm not the only famous actress in the class."
"God, my back." Rose complained as she came into the kitchen. "Personal growth is so painful."
"Why are you in pain?" I questioned.
"I went back and got a job after our other plan failed." She remarked.
"I never thought I'd see the day where you had a job, much less one that requires you to do manual labor." Dad remarked as Mom walked in. I supposed that they were just so used to me having a job.
"Mom, look at this irony." Rose declared. "Rhiannon is this book nerd and I have a part-time job."
"That's nice sweetie." She replied. She seemed like she was a little distracted.
"Mom?" Rose inquired.
"Oh, don't worry. Your grandpa's situation is very serious, but your father and I are handling it." Mom said as she turned to face all of us.
"Oh grandpa, I haven't even…" Rose started before I glared at her. "…slept well these past few nights. I am very concerned for his wellbeing."
"I'm sure everything will be fine, right?" I asked. At least I hoped it would be fine.
"Of course." Mom agreed. I wasn't sure how convincing it was. She then looked at Dad. "Right?"
"Right." He replied.
"But what if he did have to go to prison?" Rose suggested.
"Don't worry. It won't affect you." Dad assured him.
"He wouldn't lose his company?" Rose asked. I was starting to get uncomfortable.
"No." Mom replied.
"What about the house?" Rose continued.
"Rose! That's crazy talk." Dad responded. Now I felt really uncomfortable.
At school, I started to wonder what I could write about. There was this big assignment for the semester. We needed to write a script of at least 50 pages. It was tough, but I could do it as long as I didn't procrastinate. I hoped I wouldn't procrastinate.
"So, do you think Rose or Olivia will be able to get tickets?" Kaitlin asked.
"I really hope that she does." I responded. "You know that girl from the club seemed kind of young."
"She probably just looks young." Kaitlin suggested. "Now are we going to watch The Valley together tonight? So did they ever explain what's happening to your character in episodes you're not in?"
You know that gave me an idea. I could write an episode of The Valley. I didn't know if Harold would want to produce it, but at least I could write something about my character.
"She's supposed to be with her aunt or something." I explained.
The following day, I found out that Rose had only got tickets for Summer and Lindsay. I couldn't believe it. I had a poster of Cassadee Pope on my wall. I wanted to try to stay calm. I could check the internet. There had to be someone willing to sell their tickets. I was going to see that show.
"I got you tickets." Rose said before I hugged her. "I was going to surprise you, but I didn't want to make you wait."
That night, I put on a an all-leather outfit including a crop top and pants with a spike choker and bracelet. I was so excited to go to the show. Once inside, I took a soda to Rose at the ticket booth.
"So, have you seen Summer yet?" I questioned before giving Kaitlin a kiss. I was surprised that she didn't want to come with us.
"I bet Summer decided to ditch the show and go to Incubus with Lindsay." Rose suggested. Who the hell was Incubus?
"First, Summer doesn't know Incubus who is and second, you would be happy for her because you're her friend." I declared.
At that time, Summer walked in…with Holly.
"Holly, Summer?" Rose asked. "Where's Lindsay?"
"He couldn't make it." Summer lied. I wondered if Rose knew she was lying.
During the intermission, Kaitlin and I decided to go outside for some air. It was at that point that I couldn't help but notice a familiar face sitting on a bench on the pier.
"Hey." I greeted her.
"Hey." She replied.
"What are you doing here?" Kaitlin questioned. They still didn't seem to be on good terms.
"I just needed to get out of the house." Marissa answered. "So, what are you two doing here tonight?"
"We're seeing Hey Monday." I replied. The band is going back on in a few minutes.
"Summer said that she was going to that with Holly." Marissa explained. "Lindsay didn't want to go."
"Well do you think Summer and Rose will get back together?" I inquired. I could use an outsider's perspective.
"She probably has better shot with Holly than Summer." Marissa suggested. Yes, but I didn't think Holly wanted to date my sister.
"Well we need to get back inside." Kaitlin stated before she dragged me away. So it seemed like things had definitely not improved between the two of them.
"Will you please try to fix things with her?" I questioned. "It hurts me to see that you two can't even get along."
"Well she won't even give Caleb a chance." She pointed out. "I think for all of his faults, he really does love my mom."
"She's still your sister." I replied. "I guess right now, we should enjoy the music while watching the awkwardness of Summer and Rose together."
I noticed that the two of them were pretty awkward. It was like they didn't know how to make small talk or be friends. Maybe they were both nervous. Maybe it was because Summer still had feelings for Rose. Holly looked uncomfortable between the two of them. If any other band was playing, I would spend more time paying attention. Some might say that I wasn't the best sister but it was fucking Hey Monday. Besides, I knew that Rose would tell me all about it because that was one part of her that would never change.
"So, you didn't tell me that your sister got a job just to get tickets for Summer." Holly said.
"It wasn't just for Summer" I stated. I really wanted to say that she got them for me too. She just looked at me. "Fine, it was just for Summer. She really wanted to impress her."
"I kind of want to get them back together." She admitted. "I mean if they got back together, we would all be able to hang out together a lot more."
"That's something that they need to work out on their own." Kaitlin opined. "Why don't we talk about you?"
"Hey guys." Olivia remarked.
However, before I could introduce Olivia to them, I noticed that Summer ran out and Rose followed behind her. I had a strong feeling that she had screwed it up.
The next morning, I was preparing to go to the library with Kaitlin. We were going to meet at the library so we didn't do anything else. Rose was talking to me about how he blew it with Summer as just I had suspected that she would.
"I shouldn't have returned her phone calls." She stated. Summer wasn't the one calling her so much.
"She never called you." I pointed out.
"And I should have dated other girls." She added.
"Rose, you don't know any other girls except Holly, and I would really rather you two not date." I declared. I hadn't been able to get that out of her because the music that had played. I supposed that there was also Marissa, but I didn't think she was available, nor did I want to subject my sister to her. "I'm sorry about what happened but I have to get to the library."
"On a Saturday?" She asked.
"It's a study date." I told him. "I have some writing that I need to work on."
"Come on, I just need to talk about me for a few more hours." She begged.
"I thought you weren't going to do that anymore." I remarked.
"That was the new Rose Cohen." She responded. "That one didn't end up sticking around."
"Well Rhiannon Cohen has to go." I declared before I left. I wasn't sure what she was going to next weekend when I was shooting."
Once I got to the library, I couldn't help but wonder if Rose found anyone to talk to. It did seem like I was the only who would put up with her sometimes.
"What's on your mind?" Kaitlin asked. "What kind of story are we going to write?"
"I want to do like a character origin story that would be somewhat based on my own origin story. Do you think that I could get Harold to make it." I explained. "I'm also wondering if I'm being a bad sister by not helping Rose out with Summer."
"Well as someone who hasn't been a very good sister lately, I can tell you that there is only so much you can do." She remarked. "You're the one who said that you didn't want to get distracted. If Summer and Rose are meant to be, they will get back together. So, how do you think I can rebuild me my relationship with Marissa?"
"What's something that both of you like?" I asked. They had to some sorts of common interests.
"I am not even sure what she likes anymore." She admitted.
"I think I found a topic that you can write about." I suggested. She was working on a writing assignment of her own. "You can use your relationship with Marissa and turn it into a story. Two sisters that are living together but somehow estranged sounds like it has a lot of potential."
"What are you going to write about?" She asked.
"I haven't decided yet. I could tell my own story, but I don't know if anyone wants to hear it." I replied.
"Why don't you tell your own story but add a twist to it." She suggested. "Like make it fantasy or science fiction, or even set it in a different time period. You have a lot of potential with that."
"Well that becomes a different story entirely." I pointed out. That wouldn't be an episode of The Valley unless one of those really weird ones that shows have sometimes, like the episode of Scrubs where everyone was singing, or the Pretty Little Liars episode where Spencer imagined everyone in a film noir.
"Do you think that we have done enough brainstorming?" She asked.
"Maybe we should do a little more." I replied. "Maybe we can do it in pool house."
"Okay, but you do have to promise to introduce me to Olivia later." She agreed.
So we got to see more of Olivia Rodrigo in this and Alex also showed up. She's played by Hailee Steinfeld. Please don't forget to review.
