A/N: I don't own Chuck. This story is written with entertainment purposes and I don't get anything from writing it.
A/N: This story adapts the story of The Handmaid's Tale (I also don't own) using the Chuck characters we all love. The story, however, is darker and with themes that may not be appropriate to everyone so before you start reading: Warning - This story contains elements that may affect you emotionally!
A/N: Now that you've been warned, I wish you a happy reading!
The world order shifted. A powerful criminal organization named Fulcrum took over the US government. Fulcrum infiltrated deep inside every intelligence and law enforcement agency in the country, slowly raising through the ranks and taking power. The leaders of Fulcrum were none other than Stephen Bartowski and his partner Ted Roark. With Stephen's genius and Roark's money and influence, Fulcrum succeeded. One day everything was normal, and then the televised deaths of many powerful people in Washington started. Fulcrum wanted everyone to know that they were now in charge, and nobody could stop them.
Once the government fell, a new system started to take shape, the Gilead system. The new order favored the rich and powerful, while others were less lucky, women especially. There were the Commanders, the most powerful men in Gilead, who ran the country. There were the Wives, women who stood alongside the Commanders and supported the regime. There were the handmaids, women that lost their rights, that now were supposed to obey every whim of the Commanders and their Wives. And there were the Eyes, men and women alike, spies for Gilead, meant to destroy any hope of a resistance. The few lucky people that escaped flew to other countries. It was only a matter of luck for them to escape into Canada or Mexic, but that only happened for people who lived near the border. It felt hopeless.
The streets, once full of people, are now mostly empty. Happiness and joy have been replaced by fear and paranoia. Trust and truth disappeared as the new world that rose in the ashes was built on deception, manipulation and cruelty.
In this new world, one of the most powerful and feared Commanders was Chuck Bartowski, the son of Stephen Bartowski. Chuck at first was a good person and didn't agree with the new regime, but with time, he slowly started to enjoy his power. He became cold and calculating. The people he once saw as friends and family were now pawns in his cruel game of chess. His wife, Jill, a Fulcrum loyalist, was known for her ruthlessness. She thought that she could manipulate him, seduce him, but Chuck was always one step ahead. He let Jill think she had control, but that was just because he enjoyed having her satisfy his 'bodily needs.'
Ellie Bartowski-Woodcomb was one of the most powerful Wives in the new world. The other wives admired her with jealousy, as Ellie was the daughter of one of the men that brought this world to existence. The Commander she married, Devon Woodcomb, was a good husband and she enjoyed his company. She felt comfortable in her home and her life. As every other Wife, she wore a long teal dress made out of silk. Her soft long brown hair was moved by the wind as she stood in her home. Like every other Wife, she enjoyed tormenting the handmaids, making them do the most demeaning tasks as she watched.
Today, however, she was just enjoying herself as she lay on a lounger. She left her 'wife' clothes, as she was now in a black bikini and sunbathing near the pool, a luxury only she had. However, life was lonely for her. Her husband and her brother were more preoccupated with the world of politics of Gilead. The other wives were good company, but she couldn't name them friends, not even her brother's wife, Jill. In fact, she hated Jill. Unlike her and other wives that helped build Gilead alongside their husbands, Jill's loyalty was always changing to the direction the wind blew. In fact, there were rumors about Jill betraying Fulcrum, but later turning back to them when Fulcrum won, saying that she betrayed only to gain the trust of the CIA so that she could help Fulcrum with information about their enemy. That rumor was never addressed, everyone thinking she was telling the truth, everyone but Ellie who was still in doubt about Jill.
She got down from the lounger and went towards the pool. She slowly entered the water.
FIVE YEARS AGO…
It was just as she graduated Harvard. Sarah Walker stood proud of her accomplishments, when on every screen in the world the image of Ted and Stephen appeared. Down on his knees a person was near them. It was the President of the United States.
"This is the end," said Ted Roark.
"The US government failed, and now we have control," said Stephen. He was calm and unmoved, while keeping a gun in his hand.
"Fulcrum is now in charge and everyone that will follow us will be rewarded, while those who resist will suffer the consequences," said Ted.
At that moment, Stephen shot the President in the head. Everyone watched on the screens in horror as the body of the President fell on the ground, lifeless.
"God!" said another student near Sarah, as she watched in shock.
"It has to be a joke, right?" thought Sarah.
PRESENT DAY
Sarah stood in her long and loose red dress. Her white bonnet on her head covering her blonde hair. Many moments from her past playing in her mind as she looked at the house where she was going to serve a new Commander. She was a handmaid, her only role in life now was to please the commander and his wife. She slowly made her way up the cold stone stairs until she stood in front of the door. She knocked two times, as that was the custom.
"Enter," said the cold voice of a man coming from inside.
Sarah slowly opened the door and entered. She saw the commander and his wife - Chuck and Jill - standing on the stairs inside that led towards the floor above. Near them, there were the other handmaids of the house, that wore similar clothes to her. Jill stood in her elegant teal dress made out of silk, near her husband. Chuck, in his black suit, stood and watched Sarah for a second. He was evaluating her. Sarah kneeled at the feet of the commander, as she already knew that her only role was to serve him.
"Hello there. You must be our new handmaid," said Chuck.
"Yes, Commander," said Sarah as respectful as she could. Every fiber in her body was disgusted for letting herself be treated like that, but she had no choice but to submit.
"What is your name?" asked Chuck calmly. He looked at her, assessing her.
"Sarah," she simply said.
Chuck tuned towards Jill. "Show her to her room," he said and left.
"Don't get any ideas. This is his house. He's my husband," said Jill.
Sarah felt disgusted at the idea of what Jill mentioned.
"Follow me," said Jill.
Sarah followed Jill upstairs where the Wife showed Sarah a small room.
"This is your room. You will spend a lot of time in here, when not summonsed," said Jill.
Sarah entered the room and Jill left. The room was small with white walls. The room was designed to stop handmaids from attempting to take their own lives, because for many handmaids, liberty was found only in death.
Sarah went near the small mirror glued to the wall. She looked at herself and the only thing she saw was a obedient woman with her blue eyes, a shadow of what she once was.
"I need to serve them. That's my role. I live at the pleasure of the commander and his wife," she reminded herself.
FOUR YEARS AGO…
Fulcrum ended all signs of a rebellion since they took over the government one year ago. They started building the society of Gilead extremely fast. Sarah tried to flee the country with her mother and sister, but they got captured. She saw her mother get killed in front of her eyes and she and her sister got separated. Sarah was sent to a handmaid reeducation center, while her sister's fate remained unknown to her.
At the center, she met Langston Graham. He was harsh man that enjoyed breaking a woman's will.
Graham got close to Sarah and put his hands on her face, but Sarah fought back and hit him. The guards went and immobilized Sarah.
Recovering from Sarah's punch, Graham said to her "Ah, you are a feisty one! No worries, you will soon learn, like everyone else, that your body serves at the pleasure of Gilead. That you will do whatever your commander and his wife ask of you without thinking or second guessing. You are now a handmaid, and that is your only role in life, to serve."
Sarah spit at him, which made Graham smile.
"Send her to solitude," said Graham to the guards. "She needs to learn how to respect me and the society of Gilead."
PRESENT DAY, UNKNOWN LOCATION.
John Casey, a former NSA Major, spent his life fighting for his country, a country that now no longer existed. He was now a leader of a small faction of rebels that wanted to regain control of the US, now Gilead, and bring back the old world order. But that meant he and his faction needed more resources and man-power to beat Fulcrum's Gilead.
He entered the room and saw Morgan Grimes, his second in command.
"Any news from them?" asked Casey.
"No, but that is expected, they need to be careful to not get caught," said Morgan.
"Do you think they will succeed?" asked Casey.
"If anyone can, that's Alex and her team," said Morgan, hopeful.
"I hope so, but I don't like the fact I sent my daughter into enemy territory in the hope that she'll find Zondra's rebels," said Casey.
"Alex can take care of herself" said Morgan
"I hope so." said Casey
"Major Casey, there's a message from the Republic of Texas, their leader accepted to meet with you in the neutral zone, alone." said a rebel from Casey's resistance who came in the room.
"Do you think they will help?" asked Morgan
"I don't know. But if we want to have a chance against the enemy we face, we need Gertrude Verbanski's help." said Casey
