Hey everyone! Here's a fun HTTYD Hiccstrid one-shot, just because: why not?
Astrid
They flew over the island, over the sea.
Stormfly's movements were natural, practiced.
"Come on girl," Astrid muttered, urging Stormfly forward.
The dragon growled her approval as they soared through the clouds, the dark still shining in the early morning. It had to have been only five or six hours past midnight. But Astrid was an early riser.
She did these things nearly every morning—woke up early, fed and woke up Stormly, then took off into the sky to do island surveillance—and feel the cool air on her cheeks, her hair flowing in the wind. It was a wonderful sensation that Astrid could never seem to describe to her friends. They understood the rush of dragon riding, of course, but they didn't understand this.
Except, maybe Hiccup, Astrid thought—almost begrudgingly.
That was when, as they soared to their highest point yet, another out of flapping wings came into Astrid's earshot.
"HICCUP?!" She yelped.
"Uh…morning, Astrid," he said in his cutely awkward way.
"What are you doing out here? You never ride this early!" Astrid exclaimed.
"I felt like…riding, this morning! It's a…special, morning?! Toothless definitely didn't force me to or anything."
He shoved Toothless as he said force.
Astrid raised an amused eyebrow. "Uh-huh."
Hiccup grinned sheepishly, and Astrid smirked. "Let's fly, then," she scoffed.
He turned hot pink. "Fly. Right. Of course." Astrid's eyebrow couldn't possibly have raised any higher, her amused expression any more amused.
"Hey, uh…Astrid?" He asked after they'd flown for a few minutes in silence, gliding over the water.
"Yeah?"
"I found this…little island. And don't get me wrong, you don't have to go with me, but…" Hiccup trailed off.
"Why not?!" Astrid scoffed, diving after her friend.
And when they arrived, the island took Astrid's breath away. Lush, beautiful green fields, covered in little dandelions, bursting with color and life, smooth and rich with beauty. It was small, but had a gorgeous view of the sea.
It was as though someone had taken a sea-stack, sunk it partway into the ocean so it was far above the water, but not too far, then covered it in the most beautiful grass and flowers possible.
"Hiccup…how did you find this place?" Astrid said breathlessly as they landed with two satisfying thumps.
She dismounted Stormfly in a perfect leap, running her fingers over her dragon's scales. Toothless hopped awkwardly off of Toothless, grinning and walking his signature walk up to her.
"Took me a while," he admitted.
"It's beautiful," Astrid said, spinning around in a circle.
Conveniently, she tripped on a rock.
Apparently there were those on this perfect little island as well.
And she landed right in Hiccup's arms.
She blushed, and he grinned ridiculously as she quickly stood back up.
Toothless
Meanwhile, Toothless and Stormfly were exchanging knowing glances of amusement.
Toothless knew it was time to bring their humans a little closer.
He and Stormfly were only friends, of course, but Astrid and Hiccup?
They were meant for each other, whether they knew it or not.
What should we try? Stormfly growled to him.
Let's eat some dandelions! Was the only response Toothless could come up with.
I mean, it's a solid plan. We distract them, then Hiccup has his chance! Toothless explained with a smile.
Stormfly groaned. Good luck with that.
You…are going to help, right?!
Of course, Stormfly sighed, anything for Astrid.
And anything for Hiccup, Toothless concluded, diving into the dandelions and rolling around, chomping on only the yellow-ist ones.
Hiccup
"Toothless, what are you doing?" Hiccup snorted.
"Stormfly, they could be poisonous!" Astrid yelped suddenly.
Hiccup, Toothless, and Stormfly all stopped, turning slowly to glare at her wordlessly—they're dandelions, you ding-dong! They seemed to say.
Astrid turned a shade of pink that oddly brought out her eyes.
Hiccup shook himself—he shouldn't be noticing that.
She didn't even like him!
…did she?
This whole thing hadn't been Hiccup's fault—Toothless had set it up.
Toothless had found the island—well, Hiccup was pretty sure Toothless had known it was there and had led Hiccup there like the giant scaly leader he was—and had literally bit Hiccup to wake him up that morning. He had groggily climbed on, and Toothless had brought Hiccup to the island, then dragged him after Astrid.
That was how most things seemed to go in Hicucp's life.
Toothless's fault.
"So, uh…Astrid?" He asked hopefully.
"Hm?" She asked, eyes sparkling with mischief as she ripped dandelions out of Stormfly's mouth.
Hiccup gulped. "Never mind."
Toothless made a groaning noise, then stood with a determined look in his large eyes. He walked right up to Toothless, then nudged him forward.
Again.
Again.
"Bud, what are you doing?!" Hiccup asked, trying to shove his friend back.
But Toothless, being Toothless, was relentless.
He shoved Hiccup farther forward with his nose, right towards Astrid.
Hiccup quickly realized Stormfly was doing the same to Astrid.
"Oh, this was a setup, wasn't it?! Hiccup Hadock, Toothless, and Stormfly, this is unacceptable!" Astrid said in her most 'maternal' voice. "Good idea, actually."
"Really?! It was…totally my idea!" Hiccup said, thinking fast.
Toothless and Stormfly dove their noses right back into the bright dandelions, looking satisfied/annoyed.
Astrid sat down between them, sighing contentedly, stroking Stormfly. Hiccup flopped down between Astrid and Toothless, leaving the set of four looking out as the sun rose, colors bleeding over the water, flowers, and grass.
After a few moments of just watching it all, Hiccup shifted uncomfortably.
"Astrid?"
"Hm?"
He froze again. The sparkle was back.
He looked to Toothless, desperate for help.
Toothless groaned, nudging him, mouth full of dandelions.
"Well, aren't you helpful," Hiccup muttered under his breath.
"Toothless is just like that, Hiccup. I would've thought you'd be used to that by now," Astrid smirked, nudging him similarly to how Toothless had.
Hiccup wasn't sure if he'd ever been so flushed and flustered.
"Toothless? Yeah, he's always a little…Toothless-ish," Hiccup said as casually as he could.
Astrid laughed.
YES! I DID SOMETHING RIGHT! His brain screamed.
If he hadn't been in front of her, he would've been doing a happy dance—he'd just have to do it internally.
Then, Astrid did something wonderful, that Hiccup never would've expected from a stupid setup created by dragons.
She leaned against his shoulder, smiling.
And he leaned over and kissed her forehead.
And she didn't pull away.
However, an hour later, she punched him.
Because she was Astrid.
And he loved her for it.
