Checking the traps he'd laid down, Ryo sighed, annoyed; all three had been sprung, the bait was gone, but he'd failed to catch anything, which was annoying. Bad enough he and Dee were having to camp out in this damp, dingy, draughty rundown apartment while staking out the building across the street, but to have to share it with a population of rats and mice on top of the cockroaches was too much.
"Any luck?" Dee murmured.
"None. These traps are supposed to be foolproof, but no matter how carefully I set them, I'm still not catching anything." He'd heard the rodents scuttling around while he was trying to grab a couple of hours' sleep on the old camp bed they'd set up, so they wouldn't have to sleep on the floor, at the mercy of the wildlife, and yet in two days, nada.
"It's not the traps, or the way you're settin' 'em, New York rodents are just way smarter than your average vermin. They've got every kind of trap sussed, so they can get the bait without bein' got."
"Where does that leave us, putting up with rats and mice for another week?"
"We could borrow a cat."
