August 21st 1993

The days went by in an excruciating slow way. The riddle and the drawing of the mines kept prodding into the back of her mind while she sat inside all day. Her lack of TV and confiscated books bored her. And her guitar, which once belonged to her mother, was missing too when she got back into her room last Sunday.

They were all locked away somewhere in her father's office. He told her at dinner that night and again how much she had disappointed her.

Caelina brushed her teeth slowly, readying herself for another dull day of repetitive chores and doing nothing at all. She rubbed her eyes before spitting out her toothpaste.

The girl then felt a hand on her back, making her jump in surprise. She turned her head towards the person, only to find out that it was just her dad. He narrowed his eyes at her, but his expression immediately went back to icy cold.

"I have to prepare some things for the next school year, so I will be gone until tomorrow morning," he told her in a calm tone. "Don't even think about leaving the house; I've put charms on all the doors, including the one leading to my office," he continued.

Caelina just kept nodding along, knowing that was probably the smartest thing to do. "There's food in the fridge if you get hungry," he told her, turning around almost immediately after.

The girl rubbed her temples after his departure, wondering when things were going to be normal again between her and her father. He had been giving her the silent treatment ever since she lied to him. Guilt kept prickling down in her stomach, but a part of her still felt like this was all a bit too much.

Black was after Harry, not her, and for Merlin's sake, it was summer. She deserved a pleasant summer after what Kate had done to her. She wished her father could understand. However, she hadn't told him the full details of what had happened yet. Because that meant that she had to expose a part of herself that even she still couldn't accept.

Caelina felt a knot in her stomach and instantly brought her attention back to the riddle she found in the attic.

She didn't know who put it there and why. Was it a family member of hers? Another resident who lived here before her father and her grandparents. It couldn't have been the last option. This house got built just before her grandparents moved in. The teen placed the toothbrush back into the plastic pink cup she used to drink out of when she was younger.

Caelina stepped out of the bathroom, turning the light off behind her and closing the door. She then stumbled down the stairs, bumping against the wall once. Her neighbour had thrown multiple parties this week, and the music was audible from the other end of the street. The twat couldn't care less about the other people who lived here. He especially hated her father for some odd reason.

The police didn't care about him, and he scared the other neighbours. She heard him beat his girlfriend on multiple occasions, but he always got away with it.

They got her out of the situation, at least for a little while. But eventually she went back to him and the entire cycle continued.

Caelina sleepily made her way through the sitting room, bumping into the sofa on her way to the small kitchen. Her father stood by the stove baking an egg, while an old black toaster toasted two pieces of brown bread. She preferred white bread, but her father always bought the brown ones because they are "healthier".

She passed her father on the way to the old wooden table, which could seat five people. Caelina sat down, her back facing the backdoor which led to the backyard.

Bright lights illuminated the kitchen in contrast to the dimly lit sitting room; beige tiles completely covered the walls. And it had only just enough space for all the essentials. The fridge was compact and had a few dents from its daily usage. Three old moving pictures of her when she was younger hung on the fridge door. One of them included Amelia, and it made her stomach churn.

She swiftly shook any thoughts of the girl away though since her father was approaching her. He held a small white plate in his hand with two pieces of toast and baked eggs. He also sprinkled on a little of shredded cheese and chili flakes.

"I want you to stay inside; I will know it if you don't," he threatened with a stern tone. She nodded as she took the plate from his hands. Hurrying to cut a piece off, which she then gleefully ate. Shoving it inside of her mouth as quickly as she could, which granted a disgruntled look from her father.

"I am giving you a chance to win back my trust, so don't mess it up or you'll be in detention until you graduate," he finished his lecture, eventually leaving the kitchen with a stride.

Caelina shoved the last piece of toast in her mouth, slowly following her father behind. He gave her one last glance before he swiftly walked out through the front door. "Bye dad," she said in an innocent tone as she suspiciously watched her father leave.

He told her a grumpy goodbye before he closed the door. She could still see his figure through the frosted window on the door. Something was off; Caelina knew he only used the Floo Network to get to Hogwarts. It's how she herself had travelled there every day after primary school. He barely went outside, and she knew he wouldn't be able to apparate into Hogwarts directly.

So there must be a reason he specifically left the house through the front door. The girl thought back to the interaction they only just had. He told her he would find out if she left the house. But then again, he always said things like that. It wasn't odd for him to threaten her like that. Or anyone, really.

What if he's putting a charm on the door? Caelina's eyes winded and she lunged forward, dabbing the door knob which was extremely hot to touch, so she withdrew her hand in an instant. "Dad, I forgot to ask you something," she said as she banged her hand on the window.

There was a pause before her father opened the door. Caelina took a step back as it swung open, revealing her father, who still wore a disgruntled expression.

"What is it?" he asked her.

Caelina bit the inside of her cheeks. "We've run out of pads and I think my period is starting soon; can you please run by the store tomorrow?" she lied. Well, she lied about her period starting soon. She had no clue when it was going to start, since she forgot to track it.

Her father looked a bit taken back but quickly wiped the look of surprise off his face, nodding. "Was that all?" he said, and Caelina took a step back again. "Yes, bye dad," she told him and he quickly closed the door, and walked away from the house.

The girl immediately felt a smirk creep up on her lips as her eyes caught sight of the doorknob once more. Her suspicions were correct; the door had a charm put on it. Probably to keep her inside, and to alarm her father, she left the house through the front door. She had read about it in a book sometime ago inside the Hogwarts library.

It was the second Christmas holiday since she started going to Ilvermorny. Fred and George were there too, who she had met for the first time when she was only eight years old. The twins were in their first year and Caelina was coming to Hogwarts for the weekend.

She helped them prank her father since she was in a mood with him after he refused to let her bring her friends to Hogwarts for the weekend.

They were researching all different spells, charms and potions for their next prank. And Caelina came across a charm that could tell exactly who and when someone left the house through the charmed door. It also burnt the escapee's hand if they held it for too long.

She was certain her father put the charm on the front door. And most likely the backdoor too. There would be no way to escape the house.

Unless he didn't put the charm on the windows as well. The girl snuck into the sitting room as a fresh wave of excitement and curiosity flowed through her. She could easily tell him she just wanted some fresh air; it was a pretty solid proof excuse since there had been a heatwave going on for quite some time.

Caelina stepped through the sitting room, stopping at the one window which was between two walls of bookcases. She gulped and crept her hand towards the window, giving it a soft touch.

The girl now felt no burning sensation. She looked down at her fingers and there was no burn mark, either.

Caelina brought her hands through her hair, her mind travelling back to the note she found in the attic. She was certain the clue led to the abandoned mining factory near her house. And it seemed even more appealing than ever now that she knew she could escape the house unnoticed.

She obviously had to be back before her father came home. Which would most likely be very early in the morning.

The teen closed her eyes for a second. She could try to find the gold now, risk getting into more trouble with her father, or she could stay put. Possibly missing out on a golden treasure.

She tried to open the window, only to find it locked, but at least her father hadn't charmed it. Caelina thought hard for a moment, trying to find another way of getting out of the house. And then she remembered something, and she instantly bolted upstairs. She practically flew into her room and threw open her desk drawer. She ravaged through it, pushing away multiple items as she was in search of a very specific object.

Caelina grinned when she finally found what she was looking for. She grabbed a tiny plastic box of black hairpins from the drawer. Caelina also took the note from her room, stuffing both items in the front pocket of her grey hoodie. The girl then ran back downstairs, not bothering to change her clothing. The hoodie would be enough to keep her warm down in the tunnels. She also wore a pair of light blue baggy trousers.

A sudden rush of adrenaline came over her as she folded out the pin. She then got it inside the lock and started the very long and dull process of picking a lock.

She twisted it around for what felt like hours. Cursing under her breath and almost stopping a few times. But every time she almost gave up, the image of the mineshaft and Lewis's countless ramblings about the gold popped back up into her mind.

"Bitch," she spat as she hit the window with her hand. "Ow," she murmured almost immediately after.

Caelina tried it one last time, sticking the pin back in. Maybe, just maybe, if she regained her father's trust after today, she could explore the mines before the start of the school year. But she didn't need to worry about that scenario, as the window was finally unlocked. "Thank you Fred and George," she mumbled whilst pushing it open.

A slight breeze hit her face, but it was quite pleasant since the temperature for the last few days had been a complete hell. She crawled out of the window, jumping onto the dirty stones. Caelina glanced around the street to look for any signs of her father, but there were none.

Her neighbour stepped out of the house, and he instantly glared at her. "Good afternoon Janko," she said, completely butchering his Dutch name. He ignored her comment and instead got into his lime green car.

"Twat," she mumbled. Caelina closed the window as far as she could just to make it look like it was completely closed. So she could still get inside. She then moved towards the same dirt path she and her friends used last week. Passing by the playground, which wasn't abandoned this time. Three teens were smoking weed, one of them she recognised as one of Lewis's older brothers.

She paid him no mind, quickly making her way through the woods. The girl could already smell the river more clearly, so she knew she was close. She made her way through the woods much quicker than last time, wanting to waste absolutely no time after the whole debacle with the window.

There was a bridge situated not too far from the place where she and her friends got picked up by Jake.

The teen took a left turn, this time following the long dirt path that surrounded the river. She walked a little further, and eventually a battered old wooden bridge came into view.

Caelina trudged it avoiding the holes until she made it across the river. Her heartbeat went up quite a bit, but she immediately continued walking. The mining facility was only a few minutes away now, but she could get there even faster if she hurried up a bit. So she went for a jog.

There was a weird feeling in her stomach. The girl felt uneasy. She felt as if someone's eyes were following her every move. But it wasn't possible; there was no one in front of her or on the other side of the river.

She still felt the fear rise in her body though, so she stopped jogging, taking a quick glance back, only to be met by a gigantic black dog. It sat completely still a couple of meters behind her between a bunch of trees and was staring at her without blinking his eyes.

Caelina gave a sigh of relief. Realising the thing that was following her was just a dog, and she turned her back to it, continuing her journey.

She usually loved dogs, but she didn't have the time to give it any more attention. Right now her mind was set on one thing only and that was the gold.

The uneasy feeling never left, and she suspected the dog was following her. She had now reached the facility. There was one large brick building with a gigantic chimney that stuck out above all the houses in her neighbourhood.

There were a couple of smaller buildings too, and a large metal structure at the end of the facility. The place was full of broken glass, beer cans and cigarette buts. The place got abandoned years ago, but the city council still kept the electricity on for the security. She scouted the area, painfully aware of the dog that still followed her.

The girl continued until she stood right in front of the huge metal structure and she again searched for a way into the mines. It appeared the structure was some kind of lift. It was rusty and Caelina instantly noted the many holes but still stepped on.

The girl held her breath, waiting for a moment before she realised that the lift miraculously could still hold her.

She then tried to look for a way to get the rusty old thing down. There was a green and a red button and she pushed the green one. The lift then rumbled, giving a harsh shake before it slowly descended. Caelina could see the dog slowly standing in the distance until the lift went underneath the earth.

It went far down beneath the ground and a full minute or two had passed before she reached the bottom. She stepped forward into the mines. There was a bit of light still coming from the opening above her and a small lamp to the right.

There were a couple of lanterns on the floor. Some of which had broken glass and the other ones had missing candles. Caelina leaned down to grab one that didn't look too broken. She also found a box of lucifers next to it and lit the candle on fire.

The girl immediately could see more of the mines. She held the lantern in her right hand and dug her left one into her pocket. Taking the note out. She inspected it and continued down a long, dark mineshaft.

There were three tunnels now that she could get into, and the girl passed the note to her other hand. And dug into her pocket once more, opening the box of hairpins. She then chose the tunnel on her left, leaving a bunch of pins on the ground every couple of meters.

There was nothing around her that looked anything like the drawing. On the note, the tunnel was much smaller than the one she was currently walking through and had a carved out hole by the end.

Caelina reached the end of the tunnel after about twenty minutes. There was no carved out hole at the end, so she immediately turned around, running back instead of walking.

By the time she reached the main tunnel again, she was completely exhausted, but she continued on. This time, she chose the next tunnel more carefully. Trying to look for an entrance that was about the same height as the one on the drawing.

But both looked almost exactly the same, so she decided to just take a gamble. This tunnel was even longer and even took a right turn, but there was still no carved out hole at the end. "Damn it," she swore as she jogged back. There was only one tunnel left and if the gold wasn't in that one, there would be no other option.

She eventually reached the main tunnel once, sweaty and exhausted. The girl took no time, however, to enter the last tunnel. She practically ran through it, ignoring the burning pain in her legs.

The end of the tunnel was already visible, and she hurried towards it. Only to find it filled with water. She could see the hole, which was also covered halfway with water.

The girl groaned loudly, as her leg scratched a rock. She then put down the lantern, the note, and the box of hairpins. Caelina took a deep breath before walking into the water. It reached all the way to her chest and smelled absolutely horrific. The smell was so bad that it actually almost made her throw up her breakfast.

But the girl persisted. Quickly moving closer and closer to the hole. She frantically moved her hands around once she reached it. Until she suddenly felt a box. The teen pulled it out and got surprised by its dryness.

She then got it out of the water, holding it above her head as she made her way back to her lantern. Caelina stumbled out of the water, coughing as she did so. She then dried her hands with the top of her hoodie that didn't get wet and instantly tried to open the box.

But nothing seemed to work. She left the reveal for another time and grabbed all of her items from the wet ground. The teen ran back to the other tunnel with the box in one hand and the lantern in the other. Her mind went back constantly to the water and how it somehow seemed to have no effect on the box.

It was odd, and she had a suspicious that it hadn't been a muggle who sent her on this hunt.

She blew out the lantern once she reached the lift and quickly got back on, pressing the red button this time. Which moved her back up. She hoped it wasn't too late since she really didn't want to be walking around her neighbourhood at night. Black wasn't the only thing that could hurt her out on those streets.

The black dog's sunken grey eyes met Caelina's gaze again as she rose, causing a strange knot in her stomach. He was barely visible anymore since it was already getting dark outside. She must have been down there for at least two hours and she didn't get out of the house until very late in the afternoon.

"Hi there," she said in a calm tone, even though she felt a bit scared. "I don't have any food, sorry," she told the dog, who remained still. She then sighed, shaking her head. The dog must be mental or something, she thought as she started the journey back home.

Walking a lot slower than before. She still felt the eery eyes of the dog on the back of her head and it actually freaked her out a little. The girl didn't understand why it was following her so closely and why it acted so unnatural, almost like it wasn't a dog at all.

She snapped her head back after crossing the bridge to find out if the dog had somehow crossed it. And she jumped backwards out of shock because the dog was sitting only a few inches away from her. "You're a strange dog," she said.

There was now a dangerous look in the dog's eyes that made her back up a little. It then bared its teeth, growling loudly at her. Caelina frantically looked around for an escape, but the only way out was through the woods.

The dog slowly crept forward, barking towards the girl. She tried to calm down her breathing as she kept her eyes locked on the animal. It kept getting closer and closer until they both heard a group of people laughing in the distance.

The dog instantly darted out of the way, disappearing into the woods. Caelina quickly ran away after that, passing the group of teenage boys who looked disgustingly at her clothes. They clearly weren't from her neighbourhood, judging by their expensive branded clothes.

She sped through the rest of the woods. Trying to ignore the horrible cramping in her legs and the horrific smell of her wet clothes. The girl jogged the rest of the way, she then scrambled through the opened window. Closing it behind her with a slam. She then closed the blinds and tiredly went up to her room, while her mind continued to travel back to the box and the creepy dog.
