Juvia

The guild was louder than usual, with people laughing and celebrating, but Juvia felt oddly detached from it all. She had agreed to lunch with Gray today—had been willing to open her heart again, ready to embrace the possibility of something new.

And yet…

The weight of the day sat heavy on her chest. Not because of Gray—he was kind, attentive, and genuine. She could feel his warmth, his interest, and it felt right in the moment.

But there was still a part of her that couldn't forget the conversation with Laxus earlier that week. You're not my backup plan.

Her stomach turned.

She had told Gray yes—she had, because she couldn't ignore the way Gray had asked, the way he had been there. But… what about Laxus?

He hadn't fought for her. He had stepped back, just as he always did, retreating into his walls, into that storm inside him that she couldn't seem to break through. She couldn't help but wonder if maybe she had failed him too. She hadn't been patient enough. Maybe she hadn't let him say what he needed to say.

She glanced over at Gray, who was laughing about something that Natsu had said, the warm, comfortable smile on his face making her heart flutter.

But her eyes… kept drifting back to the far corner.

To the shadowed figure of Laxus, sitting alone.

Was he waiting for her to look his way?

Juvia bit her lip and shifted in her seat, her heart caught between two conflicting desires. She cared about Gray. She was starting to feel something real again with him. But why did her heart still ache every time she saw Laxus?

"Juvia?"

Gray's voice broke through her thoughts. He was looking at her with concern, and she realized she hadn't been paying attention to him for a while.

"Sorry… Juvia was just thinking."

"You okay?" he asked softly, his voice holding a note of caution.

Juvia smiled, though it felt strained. "Yes. Juvia is fine. Just… thinking about a lot of things."

Gray didn't push. He just gave her a warm smile. But the knot in her stomach twisted tighter.
