Different Perspectives Chapter 23
Author's Note: I do not own The Hunger Games
Mercedes Glenn, 14. Resident of District 6.
"Steel!" I yelled as I ran after my twin brother, who was running down the street, passing by the foundry workers hard at work. "Mercedes, I want to grieve in peace"
"Styx was my classmate as well, Steelson" I said sternly to my brother.
"But still, there are six Tributes left, and I bet you the Gamemakers will try some way to bring the remaining Tributes together, perhaps by way of avalanches." Steelson muttered, recalling how the Capitol would get bored with a lack of action, remembering how at the age of seven we watched the 15th Hunger Games. Three of the favourites were killed in the opening stages, while the remaining Tributes hid in trees. It got so boring that the Gamemakers sent in a massive fireball on the eighteenth day to kill the remaining Tributes, leaving a boy from District 11, Kronos Jackson, as the Victor. It was a year after District 6 had a pair of twins in the Games, Lyndsey and Marty Schirra. Both were mercy killed by the eventual Victor, Dinah West of District 7. District 6 has exactly two Victors; Samson Wilson, a man who makes cars for Capitol officials, won the 8th Hunger Games, and the most recent Victor, Imogen Roosa. She and her District Partner hid in a warehouse throughout the Games; it was when the warehouse flooded that drove them out and killed the girl from District 5. Hector Aldrin, the male Tribute from District 6, was hacked to death shortly after. Imogen won by shooting the Districts 1 and 2 Tributes.
Sitting down in the living room, I watched as a series of avalanches ran down the ski slope; the boy from 2, Cliff, stabbed the girl from 1, Chanel, in the back, the Cannons fired, one for Chanel and the other for the boy from 7, Whitt, who had been killed by the avalanche. "You were right, Steel" I said, ruffling my twin brother's mousy hair. Turning back to the screen, I saw the boy from 2, Cliff, lying dead on the snowy ground as the girls from 1 and 2 fought. On screen, I watched, horrified, as both girls killed each other as the Arena began to darken. On screen, the Hovercraft's lights were searching for any possible Tributes left, as a girl from District 7 emerged from the blizzard.
As the leaves fell as September came, I sat at my desk. Trying not to think about the upcoming 24th Hunger Games, I listened attentively as the teacher began her class. Looking around, I saw that Steelson was flirting with Buffy Grimes. Seriously, Steel, now is not the time to flirt. We have class. Sometimes I wonder if my twin is airheaded, or if it's the oil in the air.
As the winter snow drifted down over District 6 I watched as the Victory Tour arrived in District 6. Rachel Oakley, the Victor of the 23rd Games, stood on the stage, the podiums showing a picture of Styx and her District Partner, Moto Schimdt, with their families standing in front as Rachel gave her speech.
The 24th Hunger Games
"Run!" I yelled at the screen as my brother was being chased by the District 1 and 2 girls. The girl from 1, Esme, as Lucky Flickerman called her, knocked Steelson to the ground. The girl from 2, Boudicca, lifted her tomahawk and inserted the blade into my brother's side. I heard my brother's screams of agony as the District 2 girl struck him again. Seconds later, Steelson lay dead on the forest floor, and I ran upstairs to his room, sobbing into his bed.
The funerals of Steelson and his District Partner, Felicia Levykin, was a solemn affair, with Buffy standing in silence. Buffy's younger sister, Jessica, was beside her.
The 25th Hunger Games.
As I stood on the podium, I stared at the landscape of the Arena. It had been three months since President Ravinstill announced the First Quarter Quell, and the twist was that the Districts vote in their Tributes. My District Partner, Stuart White II, was voted in as his uncle was a Tribute, in the very first Hunger Games in fact. Stuart is two years older than me. As the gong rang, I watched in horror as Valour, the District 2 boy, speared a small boy from District 3; I remembered the small boy is the brother of last year's Victors, and quickly ran for it as the boy from 1 strangled a girl from 11. As I got away from the Cornucopia, I thought to myself It's showtime.
I decided to do a District 6 chapter before I get to a Mentor chapter, and yes, Jessica is going to be a major character in the Vonheli Chronicles, a fanfiction series I hope to start when I reach chapter 50 of 75 Years.
