Hen anxiously watched her friend's bloody face. Time was slipping away, and she knew that if Chim didn't take a deep breath and open his eyes now, he might never wake up. "Come on, Chim!" she whispered, touching his burning skin, gently stroking his hair. She longed to see his dark brown eyes. Blood streamed down his cheeks and chin. "Got him?" Bobby asked, clutching the IV bag. Ravi carefully checked his friend's pulse. "Come on, Chim, you can do it. Come on, buddy." Suddenly, Ravi breathed a sigh of relief. "Okay, BP's rising. 58 top."
"See!" Bobby patted Chimney on the chest. He felt that fate had given them a second chance, given them time. Chim was still with them, and that was a good sign. He exchanged a tearful glance with Hen, who couldn't hide her emotion. Chimney was weak and slightly disoriented, but he mustered the strength to look at Hen.
"Hen, you're not supposed to be here. What's going on?"
"I'm not going anywhere, Chim. Everything will be alright, you need some rest."
Bobby stepped back from the table, glancing at the camera. He knew the Colonel was watching them. He dramatically tapped his watch, signaling that time was running out. He wasn't going to give up; his team was his priority. As Captain, he had a duty to get them out of there. Seeing Chimney's critical condition, and how quickly the virus could transform a smiling, healthy man into a helpless one, only solidified his belief that they were fighting an unfair battle and losing mercilessly. He, too, was starting to feel worse; a damaged oxygen tank hose had, against his prayers, let the virus through. The mask only slowed the symptoms. He knew he'd need care soon. He didn't even want to imagine what would happen if they all got sick. He refused to let that thought take hold. He grabbed his radio.
"Colonel. We're running out of time. Just like me, you're responsible for the lives of your men, right?"
Hartman approached the monitors but didn't answer.
"Please give me a chance to do the right thing. Please give my people a chance to see their families."
"Captain Nash, you know perfectly well I can't do that."
"There are casualties in war. There always have been. But we don't have to sacrifice everyone."Hen and Ravi, hearing these words, exchanged a look, then looked at the Captain. "Release Hen and Ravi. They are completely healthy, showing no signs of the virus. If they were infected, we would have noticed symptoms long ago."
"We can't be certain..."
"God dammit, Colonel. You can never be certain, but I always listen to my conscience. My heart. And I ask you to do the same. There's no need to condemn us all to death. Chim will stay here. His only chance is antidote which we don't have. But those who are healthy deserve a chance. Lock them up wherever you want, but don't let them die here."
"Captain Nash..."
"Chim and I stay. The rest leave. That's all I'm asking. Open these damn doors and save my people."
"Bobby, no way!" Hen retorted.
"We're not leaving you," Ravi added.
"That's non-negotiable," Bobby began. "I can't risk the entire team."
"We're already at risk..."
"Hen! Please!"
His raised voice and the tears in his eyes were enough for Hen to understand. They looked at each other and remained silent for a long moment. In that moment, she realized that today she might not only lose her best friend but also a father figure. She couldn't cope with that thought. That helplessness. She so desperately wanted to help them, but she herself needed help. Bobby moved closed to her, grabbing her hand. With a groan of pain, he knelt before her.
"When I can't, you must take care of the team. You're the Captain now, Hen."
She shook her head denially, pushing reality away from her. She put her hands around his mask, leaning closer. She tried to say something but could not break the silence. Bobby's teary eyes said it all. He was afraid and at the same time felt pride and was ready to sacrifice.
"Get out of here, Hen, and find a cure. You have to help Athena." Bobby grasped Chim's hand. "He'll be safe with me. I swear to you, I'll watch over him until my last breath. I won't leave him."
Hen felt a touch on her left shoulder. She knew that hand. She placed her right hand on Chim's, never taking her eyes off Bobby.
"We'll be fine," Chim replied weakly, taking a deep, rattling breath. Hen closed her eyes, letting tears stream down her cheeks. It was only a matter of time before Chim started having serious breathing problems. He would need her, and they were sending her away. They didn't even see what they were getting into.
"Trust me, Hen, just as I trust you."
Hen burst into tears, hugging Bobby with her healthy hand. She wasn't afraid that contact would transmit the virus. If this were to be her last hug, she had to hold him. She energetically turned to Chim, who was fighting to stay conscious. She stroked his face again, gazing into his eyes.
"I'll get you out of here. I promise I'll come back with the antiviral. Maddie's waiting for you. We're all waiting for you. You have to fight."
"I will..."
"And don't even try to die on me, because I don't know what I'll do to you."
Chim smiled weakly, then struggled to take a breath. "When we get out, use the oxygen tank and put a mask on him. It will help him breathe. Watch him; if he stops breathing, start CPR and don't stop until you can."
Bobby placed his hands on her shoulders.
"I promise."
The Colonel's voice boomed through the speakers.
"Captain Nash, I just want to point out that you are taking full responsibility for your people. If any of them..." Bobby reached for the walkie-talkie. "I'm responsible for them with my whole life. Get them out of here!"
"In 10 minutes, the air filtration level will allow the doors to be opened. Please stay in that room with Mr. Han. Close the door behind you. Ms. Wilson and Mr. Panikkar should go to the exit. My people will come after them in a moment. Please remain calm and follow instructions. Otherwise, we will be forced to use firearms.
"Hurry up." Bobby added. "Do you need anything?" Bobby looked at Hen, who turned towards the camera. "Gases, painkillers and saline. A blanket would be a nice change." Hen turned towards Ravi, who stood next to Chim, his head down. "We'll need a defibrillator, but it's on the other side."
"We'll try to get everything sorted out. Get ready." After that, there was silence in the speakers.
