It had been 20 minutes since Athena got the information from Buck that they would be detained in a moment by Agent Mark Santos. She knew she was now fighting against time. She has to deliver the antidote before the military can stop her.
Karen parked in the parking lot in front of the lab. She felt fear for Hen but also excitement that she could help. Looking in the rearview mirror, she couldn't believe that such a petite, red-haired woman with glasses was capable of creating something so crazy. When Athena got out of the car, Karen looked in her direction.
"Bring them home," she said.
"I will." Athena looked ominously at Moira. "Get out of the car! Let's go."
They managed to sneak unnoticed into the temporary laboratory, where young scientist Roz was waiting for them.
"Sergant Grant, you're back...and you..." Roz did not expect to see her co-worker handcuffed. The women did not have any particular affection for each other. Even in the face of impending tragedy, distance remained between them.
"We are here! And I brought a souvenir," she said.
Roz, however, did not seem as happy as Athena.
"What happened?" Immediately thinking she had arrived too late, she immediately ran to the monitor to see the inside of the lab through the camera. She spotted only Chim and a praying Bobby. She energetically turned back towards the women.
"Where's Hen!"
"They let them go. Hen and that young fireman."
"Why? Why didn't they get Chim out? He's the one who needs help."
"They are infected, they will never let them get out" With these words Roz dispelled all doubts. Athena moved even closer to the young woman. "Infected?"
At that moment the phone rang. Athena, without looking at the screen, answered it. On the other end, she heard Hen sobbing. She took a deep breath and asked.
"Hen? Do you want to tell me something?"
"Bobby...his cylinder hose...was damaged. He caught the virus.
"Oh god... we have an antivirus. I'll bring it to them right away everything will be fine! " replied an excited Athena recalling what she had just held in her left hand. But no one shared her happiness.
"Even having the anitodium and assuming it will work...you only have one dose." Added Roz uncertainly, " You have to choose..."
Athena didn't allow herself that option. Who should she choose? Her beloved? Or Chim, who is about to become a father. Which one is more important. Who has a greater right to live. No. She certainly won't make that decision. She aggressively grabbed Moira's coat, making sure the woman saw the anger in her eyes.
"Is there a second dose?"
"No. I used it on Polly."
"Polly?"
"The rat!" replied Roz. "Moira infected it with the virus, then administered the antivirus. The rat recovered in a few minutes."
"God..."
"Athena are you there...? " Grant lifted her phone, putting it to her ear. "I am."
"Did you say rat?"
Athena put Hen on speakerphone. Hen continues "If the rat got a dose of antivirus, it should develop antibodies!"
"Yes it's possible," turned on Roz, "We could take blood from it, separate the serum and mix it with the antivirus."
"We're not sure if it will work at all." Moira added. " You change the volume of the drug completely, all the ingredients. The drug may not work. You will kill them both."
"Since when do you care. " growled Athena. "Where is that damn rat? Where's Polly!"
Bobby was snapped out of his prayer by Chim's heavy, wheezing breathing. The man was even paler, his lips turning blue. His body had entered the final stage of illness. Respiratory failure had begun and organ failure would follow. Bobby picked up the ground. Only now did he feel how weak he himself was. His head hurt harder, he felt blood oozing from his nose. He is in exactly the same place as Chim was an hour ago. And that means they both don't have much time left. He walked to the door, by which lay a bag of extra materials. He connected the mask to the oxygen cylinder and attached it to Chim's starched face, covering his mouth and nose. With sterile gauze, he wiped away the blood trickling down his cheeks, and to be sure, he checked his pulse some more. It was faint but still there. He administered another dose of Saline, then sighed heavily. He would have been happiest to lie down next to his friend and fall asleep like him. Attempts at poking were unsuccessful, Chim lost consciousness. Tears streamed into Bobby's eyes. He would so much like to talk to Athena but couldn't confess the truth to her. As long as she was looking for an antidote, he decided not to disturb her.
Bobby spotted a chair standing in the corner of the lab. He brought it closer to the table on which Chim was lying, and sank down helplessly. He immediately felt his eyelids grow heavy and he felt like falling asleep. He drifted off for a moment when he was suddenly awakened by a loud bang.
He looked toward the source of the noise and spotted Athena dressed in a special suit, knocking aggressively on the glass. Without waiting, Bobby approached her, placing his hand in line with hers. Only a piece of glass separated them. Nevertheless, he felt that she was here with him.
"Babe!"
"Athena...I..."
"Don't say anything. Not now do you hear? We still have time." Saying this, she looked at the unconscious Chim. She found it hard to believe her own words. "We still have a chance."
"There is only one dose, babe. Nothing I say or do will change the math
"Shut up and listen to me! We still have a chance. All you have to do is give me a rat. Polly! There should be a name on the cage."
"What are you talking about."
"Just do it. Bring me Polly."
Without understanding much, Bobby turned to the cages with rats. Currently, only 3 of them had survived the explosion. As he grabbed one of the cages, Roz's voice rang out on his walkie-talkie, " Captain Nash, if the name isn't mentioned anywhere, Polly has a distinctive spot on her back right paw. Please take a closer look."
Bobby tried to focus, but the rising fever and sweat coming into his eyes prevented him from seeing sharply. He reached the last surviving rat, didn't see the distinctive birthmark, and simply decided that since it was the last surviving rat he would take a chance. He rushed as far as he could to the door and, through a special opening part, put the Rat inside. Athena, despite her disgust with these animals, pulled him out and, running out into the hallway, shouted.
"I love you Bobby!"
Bobby settled down at the door, watching his wife disappear behind the wall. "I love you, too."
