Prologue:
As always, he forgot to close the curtains before going to sleep, which left him exposed to the sunlight that shines through his window. "Hmmmm..." He wakes up at the same hour everyday because of it, which he hates.
Why do I always forget to close the fucking curtains... He thought in deep annoyance and he lay in bed a little longer before finally forcing himself to get up.
Once he was off his bed, the first thing that he did was look at himself in a mirror that was nearby. He had sickly looking pale skin and his hair was short and very messy, but what stood out the most was the fact that his haircolor was white as snow, his eyes have an unnaturally vivid shade of pale gray making his eyes almost appear as white and there were dark rings around his eyes due to the fact that he constantly stays up late. His nose has been broken more than once and he had thin lips. He was a considerably strange looking boy as a result of it. "Looking good, Nero..." He told himself as he made a pose in front of the mirror.
After checking himself, Nero went to get dressed since he was only wearing a pair of white boxer shorts. A white long sleeved t-shirt with black sleeves, black jeans and white sneakers. Every single clothes he had was either black or white, it was a weird preference that he had since he was very little. As soon as he finished getting dressed, he decided to leave his room to go grab something to eat.
"Nero." However, once he stepped outside, someone called him. He turned around and saw a middle-aged woman with dark brown eyes and wrinkles on her face, wearing a black religious habit that covered her body completely.
"Good morning, Sister Maggie." The woman was Sister Maggie, one of the nuns of the Orphanage.
"Where were you last night?" The woman asked him in a very apprehensive tone, because Nero came back after midnight yesterday.
"I was playing basketball and lost track of time." Nero admitted since there was no point in lying. "But I swear that it wasn't on purpose." That was only half-true though.
The Nun sighed in annoyance before speaking again. "You have a visitor."
Nero already knew who his visitor was. "Matt's here?" He asked and she nodded in response. "I thought he was busy with law school?" Matthew Murdock was a boy that Nero grew up with, though the two are ten years apart in age. Matt kind of became a big brother to Nero while the two stayed in the same Orphanage.
"He did promise that he'd visit, didn't he?" She replied before turning his back at him.. "He's at the entrance."
Nero just lifted his shoulders in response before he made his way to the entrance, wondering if something happened or Matt just decided to drop by. Despite being hungry, he decided to not keep him waiting, so he made his way to the entrance while passing by the quiet and empty corridors of Saint Agnes Orphanage.
As soon as he left the building. He could see a young man dressed in a brown chinos, an orange sweater, a black blazer and black business shoes, he was also wearing sunglasses with rose lenses and a cane. He had auburn shaggy hair that was longer than the last time Nero saw him, and he could see a bit of a stubble on his face.
"Hey." Matt said as he moved forward to hug him.
"Hi." Nero quickly returned the hug. "How's law school?"
"It's difficult but a fair kind of difficult." Matt replied as the two separated from the hug.. "Me and my roommate are helping each other in every way we can." He revealed it to him.
"Oh, what's his name?" Nero asked despite not really caring about it.
"Franklin Nelson, but I call him Foggy." Matt tells him.
"Foggy?" Nero asked in confusion.
"He snores super loud, the sound reminds me of a foghorn." Matt explained with a shrug. "The nickname stuck."
Nero laughed a bit because that was actually funny.
"You want some ice cream?" Matt asked him.
"If you're paying for it."
Matt took him to a park and the two sat on a bench and ate their ice cream. Nero mostly watched the people passing by while Matt just listened to them. It was a sunny day in New York City, meaning that the place was particularly full. There were some old people doing Tai Chi, old ladies strolling, couples walking together, kids playing ball, etc.
"How are things in the orphanage?" Matt asked him.
"Same as always." Nero replied dryly as he licked his cookies'n cream ice cream.
"Been fighting again?" Matt asked him a painfully obvious question.
"As long as those annoying asswipes continue to pick on me because of my appearance, I'm going to keep fighting them." Nero has been getting into fights since he was capable of throwing punches.
"I didn't teach you boxing for you to get into fights on purpose, man." Matt had taught Nero a bit of boxing in hopes of helping him deal with the people that messed with him.
The boy was a natural and learned super quickly, it had shocked Matt a little bit. "I never start them." Nero defended despite being partially lying, while looking away from Matt. "I just wanted to be left alone."
Matt just stayed quiet for a bit. "Look, things will get better." Matt said to him. "Trust me."
Nero just ignored him and looked up at the sky, watching the birds fly around. He always wondered what flying was like since that was always something that he wanted to try himself. There was also a plane passing overhead and he wondered where it was going.
"I made a friend." Nero said, ending the long pause in their conversation.
"Really?" He seemed surprised. "Who is he?" Matt asked.
"Frank, Frank Castle." Nero told him as he licked his ice cream. "I call him FJ though."
"Why FJ?" Matt licked his own ice cream, though, he did slower than Nero did as he was clearly appreciating the taste of strawberry.
"His full name is Frank David Castle, Jr." He explained to Matt. "FJ is just an abbreviation of Frank Junior." As he spoke Nero inspected his left shoe, which was considerably worn-out already.
"So like when you used to call me MM." Matt reminded him with a smile.
"It's not my fault you first and last name start with M." Nero chuckled a bit at that fact.
The rest of the conversation was considerably unremarkable, with Matt mostly talking about stuff that he learned in Law school, which would be interesting if Nero had the slightest bit of interest in being a lawyer. The two of them talked for a few hours, but after a while Matt had to take Nero back to Saint Agnes.
After Matt Murdock said goodbye to Nero Carnby and went on his way to apparently meet up with some girl that he met. But Nero didn't really go back to the orphanage. Instead, the boy made his way to a different destination.
An apartment building that was several blocks away from the orphanage. Nero likes to go there sometimes, because the place strangely brings him some strange kind of peace.
I've been waiting for a guide to come and take me by the hand
He enjoys laying on the floor and listening to loud music on an old radio that he found while staring at the clouds.
Could these sensations make me feel the pleasures of a normal man?
He could take the radio back to the orphanage but they would just confiscate it because of the noise. Plus the fact that the radio was more or less stolen.
Lose sensations, spare the insults, leave them for another day
But that wasn't the only thing that Nero had or did while at the apartment.
I've got the spirit, lose the feeling
The apartment wasn't in very good condition. It was located in Chelsea. Nero saw it as a place that only a person with no other option would be willing to live in.
Take the shock away
Which saddens Nero to think about, because he was born in that apartment
It's getting faster, moving faster now
He found out about it after reading some of the files in the orphanage.
It's getting out of hand
Nero went there to see if he could find anything out about his parents.
On the tenth floor, down the back stairs
He did, but he partially wished he hadn't because the information did more harm than good.
It's a no man's land
By the looks of it, his parents were simply two deadbeats junkies that did nothing but consume drugs in the apartment all day long.
Lights are flashing, cars are crashing
The old landlord, who passed away a year ago, didn't actually hold back in insulting them. Which Nero felt bad because the man was very nice and they must have really done something to piss him off.
Getting frequent now
Apparently they abandoned Nero in the apartment mere days after he was born and he was only found because the neighbor made several complaints about noise coming from their apartment.
I've got the spirit, lose the feeling
Nero actually came to visit the landlord from time to time before he passed away, he actually missed him since they had a habit of playing cards together during the weekend.
Let it out somehow
Since he passed away, he mostly goes there to spend time on the roof. Because nobody actually goes there and it's quite peaceful, alongside the very decent view.
"Hmmmm..." Nero turned off the Radio and decided to stand up. Time to go home. He thought since it was getting late and he would get scolded for sure if he arrived late again. However, once he was on his feet, he saw something that called his attention.
Looking to the left, he saw a billboard located on the other side of the building advertising Oscorp Industries. But it wasn't really the billboard that called his attention, it was the distance between the building that he was in and the building where the billboard was in. A memory of Matt jumping across that rooftop one time appeared in his mind for a nano-second for some reason. Should I? He was thinking about trying to do it as well, but his fear stopped him. Every single time he goes to that rooftop, he challenges himself to jump across that building. But he always cowers at the last second. He never understood why though, it was like something in his head was telling him to do it, like an outside force or something like that.
Matt did it, and he's blind, dammit. Nero told himself in frustration as he slowly approached the end of the building. He was standing on the ledge, challenging himself to jump onto the other building that wasn't that far from the one that he was currently on. "C'mon, you can do it." He kept repeating to himself. But unfortunately, the fear out-weighed his courage. He closes his eyes in frustration and turns around to leave.
He walks towards the radio and turns it off, and makes his way to the door.
But then.
A strange sensation engulfed him, with that strange feeling telling him to just do it. What is this fucking feeling, always making me wanna do things despite no actually wanting to do them... He turns his gaze back to the ledge. Staring at it for a few minutes. Before he took a deep breath and said.
"FUCK IT!" And ran as fast as he could towards the ledge.
In all the times he actually came that far, he would stop at the last second and then curse himself for not doing it again. But this time, it didn't happen. Nero doesn't think about it, he just reached the end of the line and he jumped.
The adrenaline, the feeling, and the fear overwhelmed him for a split second until he actually reached the other side. Extending his hand to grab a hold of the other ledge.
However...
"AAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!" He was unable to get a hold of it and ended up just colliding with it before falling down the building at full speed.
Nero breathes deeply as he opens his eyes, feeling an agonizing pain throughout his entire body. He can't move anything and there isn't a single part of his body that isn't hurting. With all his strength he tries to force himself to move his head to see the damage but it was no use. He can only move it enough to look at his arm. It was very crooked and he could see a bit of bone sticking out of the middle of the joint.
Despite the pain, he forced his head to move, with a lingering feeling that his neck was going to snap at any second. To his horror, he was able to see his legs were bent in a way that no one's legs were ever supposed to be bent.
Unable to move his head anymore, he tries to move his eyes to look around for help, but he doesn't see anyone. He was deep in an alley with absolutely no sign of anyone who could help him.
When he was about to use all of his strength to scream for help. Something happened, he started to feel a strange sensation in his body. He feels his entire body become warm and cold at the same time, he didn't know how to explain this sensation. He closed his eyes a bit to focus on the feeling. The sensation wasn't bad, but it wasn't good either. For a second he starts to think that it's death approaching him, he was just waiting for the pain to stop.
But then... Both the pain and the sensation he couldn't describe stopped.
Nero opened his eyes. He was still laying on the ground but when he moved his head to the sides, he could see that his arm wasn't crooked anymore. He uses them to sit himself up and to his surprise, his legs were fixed as well. He stands up without any problems and he looks up to see how far he just fell. No one could have survived that fall, Nero thinks, as he just stands there trying to process what just happened to him.
