After a couple of weeks, Sarah was cleared to go back to work. Gibbs was not sure it was the best move, but she was itching to get back to work. It would be a distraction, she thought. It felt weird to be back at her desk, but she was glad to be back. Something about being in the bullpen was comforting. Having her Beretta and knives back were comforting to her as well. Her defense system gave her that ease of mind she missed.
The team was told by Gibbs to watch her carefully. They could still sense something holding her back and they wanted to help her out but were not sure how. They didn't want her to feel like she was being babysat by them just because of what happened, but they wanted to be totally sure that she was ready to move on from the horrific events.
There was still no sign of Bruno. He was posted on NCIS and CIA's wanted lists, but it yielded little results. Jessica had returned to the CIA, leading the efforts to hunt him down. Gibbs kept up with all the leads and tried to follow the more promising ones. However, Bruno was trained by the CIA and even trained some of those that were hunting him, so he knew all their moves and how to avoid them. He did keep some of the information he knew from Sarah. He did not want to get her hopes up, but also did not want to trigger any flashbacks she was not yet ready to face. He knew eventually he was going to have to try to get her to tell them more of what happened, partly to help her heal and partly to give them more clues to work with.
Gibbs rounded the corner as he hung up his phone. "Dead body in Manassas. Gear up." The team sprang up and grabbed their field gear. They hurried behind Gibbs to the elevator. He tossed Tony the keys to the van as they slipped in. Sarah was the last to slide in as the doors closed.
The team was busy processing the scene while Gibbs talked to the local LEOs about what they found. Sarah was kneeling by Ducky, helping him examine the body and take pictures while Palmer was getting supplies from the van. Normally, the smell of a dead body did not bother her, but she was starting to feel nauseous and a hot flash overcoming her. She covered her mouth and stepped back. Ducky noticed the movement and looked behind him, finding her turn pale.
"Are you all right, dear?"
She shook her head. "The smell usually doesn't bother me." She felt the feeling of intense nausea overcome her once more.
"Palmer has the bags in the van." She quickly hurried over to the ME van where Palmer was unloading equipment. He noticed the look on her face and grabbed a disposable bag from one of the drawers. She turned away as she threw up her breakfast into the bag. She leaned against the van away from everyone's view and slid into a sitting position to the ground. She leaned her head back and closed her eyes while she tried to prevent another round overtaking her. She felt hot and sweaty. She had not had a hot flash in a long time before now, and this was by far the worst.
Gibbs walked over to the other side of the van after a word from Ducky. Palmer pointed to where she was before taking some equipment to Ducky. He found her around the corner, hiding from the view of the rest of the team. He knelt beside her and tapped her shoulder. She looked up at him and squinted her eyes from the sunlight. Her face looked pale. She pushed the bag she just threw up in away.
"Sarah, maybe you should go home for this one. Meet us back at the office. We got the crime scene."
"Gibbs, I'm fine. I don't know what came over me. I don't think I have a stomach bug."
He sighed. "See if you have Ducky or your doctor check you out later. I want to make sure you are ok." With what she had gone through in the past few weeks, he was concerned about her. "Promise me you will go get checked out this week."
She sighed. He wasn't going to let go. "Fine. I will make an appointment when we get back." He helped her up and she grabbed a notepad from the van. "Can I go now?" He nodded. She walked over to where Tony was to help him interview the spectators and witnesses. He walked over to where Ducky was kneeling over the body and bent down beside him.
"Is she ok?" Ducky asked him. He shook his head.
"I'm not sure. She won't say, but I told her she has to go see the doctor this week."
"Will she tell you how that goes?" He shrugged.
"I do not know." He turned his head and watched her. She was interviewing a jogger on the other side of the crime scene tape.
Sarah felt their gaze and glanced back at them. She was not going to tell them what she learned. She had a feeling she was not getting a stomach bug, but that it related to her prior injuries. She made a mental note to also look into it when she got home. She did not want them to worry. She felt like the team was looking at her like a victim. She did not want to be seen as a victim. She wanted to be seen and treated as the teammate she was before, like they always treated her.
