Chapter 9: A mission in the Land of Waves.

Training Ground #3: The following day

Team Seven was again at TG#3. Tenzo found it a good training place, and he was fond of it. This is where Jiraiya used to train Team 9 during the early days of its formation before they continued their training outside Konoha. It was also the place where he met Itachi and Mukai, his best friends. Growing up in the Root, he never had anything resembling friendship or family. Tsunade, Shizune, Jiraiya, and his team changed that for good.

Today, we'll begin having missions for Team Seven. However, for now, we will be assigned only D-rank missions. We'll train daily during the mornings in this training ground and proceed with our missions in the afternoon – Tenzo explained to his students. Naruto was the most excited among them.

Oi, Sensei! What kind of training will we have, huh? – the young blond asked – You three did a great job yesterday. Your teamwork is impeccable. However, you need to get better individually, which means… – Tenzo performed a series of hand seals – Mokuton: Bunshin no Jutsu! – exclaimed the jounin as two wood clones emerged from his body and stood before the young genins – I will train with you individually every morning. The real me will rotate daily with one of you, and the other two will train with my clones. You still have a long way to go before we can take missions outside Konoha – the three of them were amazed by the wood clones their sensei had just formed and disappointed by the news of not going outside the village for their first mission. Except for Hinata, she was relieved for that.

Now, Hinata, you'll train with the real me today. Sasuke and Naruto follow one of my clones to your training area – the three genins did as they were told and followed Tenzo and his clones, each taking a different route within the woods of TG#3.

With Hinata:

Hinata followed her sensei deep into the forest until they reached a large clearing. Tenzo turned to face his student – Hinata. Do you know which chakra nature the gentle fist is based on? – Hinata held her hands together and blushed as she replied – Hai, sensei. The gentle fist uses the basis of the Doton style for its defensive approach and the natural flow style of the Suiton for the attacks – Tenzo smiled at her proudly. Hinata blushed even more – I'm glad you know how your clan's technique was created. Now, do you know how the cycle of the chakra nature works? – Hinata nodded again and answered – There are eight chakra natures. These are five elemental transformations: Katon, Suiton, Doton, Raiton and Futon; and three non-elemental transformations: Ying, Yang and Ying-Yang … – she was interrupted by her sensei – I'm impressed you know about the non-elemental transformations, Hinata. I should've expected this from Hiashi's-sama daughter. However, right now, I only want you to explain the five elemental natures – Hinata nodded and took a moment to slow down her breathing. She was thrilled by Tenzo's praise.

Each transformation has at least one prominent weakness and strength against the other elements. Katon is strong against Futon; Futon is strong against Raiton; Raiton is strong against Doton; Doton is strong against Suiton, and Suiton is strong against Katon. Suiton represents the element with the most weaknesses since it is also weak against Raiton. However, when combined, Suiton and Raiton form stronger combos. Katon is the most versatile element since it can be combined with Futon, Raiton or Doton to create stronger combos. On the other hand… – Hinata was interrupted again by her sensei, who looked astonished. Her sensei had his jaw dropped. Tenzo was surprised by the level of knowledge she had. Most chunin wouldn't have been able to make such an extensive analysis of the elemental transformations.

You are brilliant, Hinata. Let me explain why I needed to go through this. Yesterday, I noticed you struggled to use the gentle fist. I have seen Mukai's gentle fist firsthand for years. I see it just doesn't come naturally to you as it does for your clan members – Hinata was ashamed. She held her hands close to her chest and lowered her sight, embarrassed – There is nothing to be ashamed of, Hinata. Tell me, do you know your chakra's nature? – Hinata shook her head – That's what I thought. I tested your chakra's nature yesterday when I took you – Hinata raised her head suddenly, curious – You have two chakra natures, Raiton and Futon. That's an odd combination by itself, not to mention that Raiton, as you said, is the weakness of Doton and Suiton. That's the reason you can't use the gentle fist adequately. Its foundation is against your nature – Hinata was shocked. Her eyes started to water as she asked her sensei.

Does this mean that it is not my fault, sensei? That I'm not a failure? – Hinata was sobbing. Tenzo smiled at her fondly, got closer and placed his hand on her head – Of course not, Hinata! I know you are a talented and brave girl. I saw it myself. During these training sessions, I'll help you develop a variation of the gentle fist based on your two natures. I spent the night talking with the best Raiton and Futon users in the village to help me come up with an idea – Hinata burst into joyful tears and hugged her sensei – Really, sensei? Is it possible? I always thought I was a failure! – Tenzo felt awkward after the hug. He only let his family hug him. Hinata's hug was odd but comforting. He broke the hug and leaned forward to face Hinata – I just need you to promise me one thing, Hinata. You must not use the style we'll develop together in front of your father or any other Hyuga, just for a while. I've been told your father is not fond of the idea of modifying the gentle fist. However, I'm sure once you master your own style and he sees how good you are, he will be OK with it – Hinata looked at him, troubled. She had never lied to her father. She felt she was doing something wrong, but she would trust her sensei. She needed to prove to her father she wasn't a failure. She nodded as she wiped her tears and was filled with self-confidence – Now that I think about it, Hinata, there is one more thing you need to keep as a secret. You must not tell Naruto about your chakra nature. Naruto is not ready yet to start training on elemental jutsus. I'll be training him in fuinjutsu. If he finds out you and Sasuke have elemental nature training, he'll be mad at me – said Tenzo with a guilty smile as he rubbed the back of his head. Hinata just nodded as she giggled. She knew her sensei was right about Naruto.

With Sasuke:

Sasuke and Tenzo's clone were standing atop a rocky hill. Sasuke was oddly anxious to start his training and broke the silence as soon as they arrived – So, sensei. What kind of individual training will I have? – asked Sasuke as he tried to hide his excitement – Hmph, interesting. You seem pumped. You are indeed quite different from your brother. Perhaps you should teach him a few things about taking initiative – Sasuke blushed. He never liked being compared to his brother. However, he liked it when Tenzo-sensei suggested that Itachi should learn from him, even if it was non-shinobi skills – I've read your academy report. You excel at kunai and sword mastering. You can also use Katon jutsus already. Tell me, have you awakened the Sharingan already? – the last question seemed to hurt Sasuke's ego. He frowned and crossed her arms – I have not, sensei. But I don't need it. I can perform and break genjutsus without it just fine – truth be told, he longed to have the Sharigan. His father and some other clan members seemed anxious for him to awaken it. On the other hand, his mother, brother and Izumi were happy he hadn't. Izumi had told him the price for awakening the Sharingan was a high price to pay. She said she would prefer not to go through that event rather than having the Sharingan.

Tenzo looked at Sasuke. He could tell he felt insulted. He was a proud man, just like his father. Tenzo knew how a Sharingan was awakened. Itachi awakened his Sharingan during a mission when Mukai was injured close to death. Jiraiya had let them proceed with the mission alone, and things had gone out of hand when a shinobi from Iwagakure got into the battle. Iwagakure was hunting down the same rogue ninja they were after. Jiraiya arrived just in time to save them from the Yonbi's jinchuriki, Roshi of the Lava release. The fight between their sensei and the Junchuriki was intense. In the end, Roshi had to retreat. Mukai only survived thanks to Tsunade's-sama invention.

I know you don't need it. I've seen how talented you are. As for your question, we'll focus your training on mastering the kunai and sword. I'll train you with the elemental jutsus as well. In order to do so, I need to figure out your chakra nature – said Tenzo as he pulled two pieces of paper from his pouch. This caught Sasuke's attention. He walked closer to his sensei and took the piece of paper his sensei offered to him. He looked at it, puzzled. Tenzo asked him about his knowledge of the cycle of the chakra nature. He wasn't as knowledgeable as Hinata, so he had to explain how it worked in more detail. Sasuke was genuinely intrigued.

Some clans tend to have certain affinities. Clan Uchiha is highly associated with Katon. The fact you can use the Katon with such ease indicates your chakra nature is Katon. However, it doesn't mean that's your only nature. Some people are born with more than one chakra nature. These papers will help us discover it– Sasuke was still clueless. He didn't understand how a piece of paper would help him know his chakra nature – Let me show you how it works, Sasuke.

Tenzo took the other piece of paper, placed it between his fingers, and flowed his chakra through it. The paper got wet, then it became dirt and crumbled away – This paper is made of a Chakra Tree. These trees are nurtured with chakra instead of water. They develop sensibility to the chakra and react differently to each nature. It ignites if it is Katon; it splits in two if it is Futon; it wrinkles if it is Raiton; it turns to dirt and crumbles away if it is Doton; finally, it gets wet if it is Suiton – Tenzo explained to Sasuke – So you have two chakra natures, right? Suiton and Doton – Sasuke pointed out. Tenzo nodded – That's correct. Suiton and Doton are the base for Mokuton. There are other shinobis with these two affinities. It doesn't mean they can use the Mokuton as well. It is a Kekkei Genkai, as your Sharingan – Sasuke was thrilled. He was excited to find out his affinities. It was still hard to understand the Mokuton stuff, but surely Tenzo-sensei would explain it when the time came.

It's your turn, Sasuke. Place the paper between your fingers and flow your chakra through it – Sasuke did as he was told. As soon as his chakra flew through the paper, it wrinkled and ignited. Sasuke smiled, victorious. He had two affinities. He couldn't wait to tell his brother, Hinata and the knucklehead of Naruto – Raiton and Katon. That's a good combination. Both are offensive natures. They are dangerous individually, and when used together, they are formidable – Sasuke gloated at his sensei's comments.

Very well, Sasuke. We'll begin with our training. I'm not a user of Katon or Raiton, but I have battled and worked with several talented shinobis with these affinities. Let me be clear about it. It doesn't mean you'll start learning elemental jutsus right away. You first need to master a fighting style that suits your chakra nature. It'll take around five to six weeks before I teach you any elemental jutsu, is that understood? – Sasuke seemed disappointed, but it wasn't for long. He was sure he would be able to start using elemental jutsus sooner. He could already use Katon without his Sensei's training. Sasuke nodded in agreement with his sensei's terms. Tenzo spoke again – However, I need you to promise me something… – Sasuke didn't like the idea of not telling Naruto what was going on. However, he knew Tenzo-sensei was right. The knucklehead would be very upset if he knew he was training in elemental nature control.

Tenzo took a scroll from his pouch, opened it and pressed his hand on it. Two swords appeared before him. They were the typical swords the ANBU corps used. He took one of each hand and offered one to Sasuke – This is Itachi's gift to you for your graduation. It was Itachi's first sword when we all three joined the ANBU corps – Sasuke took his brother's sword while his sensei kept his own – If you want to become head of the Root as Fugaku-sama, your mastery of the sword must be infallible – Sasuke tightened the grip of the sword and took a fighting stand. He was ready to start his journey of surpassing his brother and father.

With Naruto:

Tenzo took Naruto to the outskirts of Konoha, not far from his home. There was a shrine in the middle of the forest. Naruto immediately noticed the Uzumaki clan symbol on top of the entrance. He ran ahead of Tenzo to the shrine and stood before it. He hadn't seen this place ever before. He stared at the building with amazement and curiosity. Tenzo walked and stood next to him.

Your mother thinks it is time you start learning your clan's history. It is not a happy one, and talking about it is not easy for her. That's why I need you not to ask her anything about it. You're not ready to know the whole truth yet, so I'll tell you only what I deem necessary for now. I'll let you know more as you grow as a person and as a shinobi – Naruto looked at Tenzo, confused. Why wouldn't his mother talk to him about the Uzumaki clan herself? He hadn't ever truly been curious about it, so he had never asked her anything, and she never offered to talk about it either. Sensei said it was not a happy story. He was anxious to know more, but at the same time, he was scared.

Tenzo sat on one of the steps that led into the shrine and asked Naruto to do the same. He took a deep breath and started – The Uzumaki clan was known for its proficiency in fuinjutsu and incredibly strong life forces and chakra. They used to reside in Uzushiogakure years ago. Your mother was born there – Naruto stood up abruptly – Mom wasn't born in Konoha? How come I didn't know that? – Tenzo looked at Naruto. Kushina-san entrusted him with a tough task. He sighed – I told you, Naruto. It is not a happy story – Naruto wanted to ask and say more, but Tenzo told him to stay quiet – Uzushiogakure and Konoha had been allies since the creation of the hidden villages system. The Uzumaki clan is far related by blood to the Senju clan. The relationship between Uzushio and Konoha was powerful. The leader of Uzushiogakure and the Uzumaki clan of the time was Ashina Uzumaki, the strongest member of the Uzumaki clan in history; your great-great-grandfather – Naruto wowed. He was surprised to be a descendant of such an important shinobi.

Tenzo let Naruto take in the information before continuing, but Naruto spoke first – Oi, Sensei! Why has Mom never taken me to Uzushiogakure? Why hasn't she introduced me to any other member of the clan? – Naruto was beyond excitement. Tenzo's expression saddened – You know all the living members of the Uzumaki clan, Naruto – Tenzo looked at the ground, lost in his thoughts – I don't get it, Sensei. I don't know any Uzumaki other than my mom – Tenzo turned his head to look at him again – Ashina-sama had a little sister, Mito Uzumaki. She was the Shodaime's wife and Tsunade's-sama grandmother – Naruto yelled again, surprised – What! So, Tsunade-obachan and … – Tenzo interrupted him – Yeah! They have Uzumaki blood, like you. They're not pure Uzumaki, like your mother. Tsunade-sama is your mom's aunt – Naruto was so happy to know that those he always considered family were indeed his family. He still couldn't understand why his mother never said a word about it – Oi, Sensei! That's great news, but what did you mean I know all living members of the clan? – Tenzo rubbed his head. It was too hard to continue. It was like when Tsunade and Jiraiya told him the truth about his origins after Inoichi-san and Ibiki-san had dug into his mind. He discovered he had parents and a little sister. Danzo and Orochimaru killed their parents when they kidnapped him and his sister for their experiments. His sister didn't survive Hashirama's cells implant. He took deep breaths to calm himself.

Uzushiogakure and the Uzumaki clan were annihilated during the last war, Naruto. Konoha didn't find survivors. The Sandaime-sama and your mother believe some of them might have been able to escape and hide in another nation. We don't know for sure if there are more Uzumakis somewhere else, though – it hit Naruto as a bucket of cold water. He was speechless. He was furious. He started to cry out of anger or sorrow; he couldn't tell – Who did it! Why would someone eradicate an entire country and clan? – Naruto couldn't pull himself together. He had never felt like this before. His chakra was bursting against his will. Tenzo was shocked, not only by the amount of chakra Naruto was expulsing but also by the orange traces of chakra that emanated from him and mixed with his bluish chakra – So, it is true. Naruto's chakra possesses reserves of the Kyubi's chakra. Kushina-san was right. He's still unable to use it at will. We need to find a way for him to learn how to master it – Tenzo thought as he saw his student mourn the loss of a family he never met. He stood up and placed both hands on Naruto's shoulders. He calmed Naruto down until he stopped bursting his chakra. He had to use his mokuton without Naruto noticing to suppress his chakra since Naruto didn't seem to calm down.

After a long silence, Tenzo spoke again – I know this is a lot to process, Naruto. You can imagine how hard it was for your mother to arrive in her homeland and find it destroyed without signs of life. That's why you must not ask her anything. You would open an old wound, and she'd suffer for it – Naruto nodded and said nothing. It was odd for Naruto to be so quiet.

Tenzo stood up and asked Naruto to follow. They stood at the doorstep of the shrine – This is the Uzumaki Clan's storage temple. Mito-sama had it built to honor the bond between Konoha and Uzushiogakure. It contains a collection of masks and scrolls with your clan's techniques. I'm not entirely sure how the masks work. That's something sooner or later, one of your parents or Jiraiya-sensei will have to explain to you. I've learned several Uzumaki sealing techniques from Jiraiya-sensei and your mother. I'll teach you everything I know, and we'll learn some cool new things together. There are plenty of scrolls I haven't gone through – Naruto was excited. Learning about the tragic past of his clan made him long to learn more about fuinjutsu. It will be his way to connect with his ancestors.

Naruto opened the doors and entered the temple. Before him, he saw a podium where several oni-masks hung beneath three connected symbols of his mother's clan. The podium had a white veil on top and was ornamented with a black flame-like shape carved wood at the bottom. The lateral walls of the temple were bookshelves. These contained books and scrolls with the techniques of the Uzumaki clan. Naruto's jaw dropped. He couldn't believe the number of books and scrolls he saw – It is impressive, isn't it? I had the same reaction the first time your mother and Jiraiya-sensei brought me here. I've been training in fuinjutsu for the last ten years, and I haven't been able to read all these books and scrolls. Only your parents, Jiraiya-sensei and Sandaime-sama, have read all of it – Naruto stayed mute. He was perplexed by how cool the Uzumaki clan was. He felt his sensei's hand on his shoulder. He looked up to meet his sensei's gaze – Niisan! This is so cool! Let's begin! – Tenzo was happy to see Naruto's sorrow was gone. He'd let the "niisan" go for this one time. Sasuke and Hinata weren't there to see it anyway.

Oh! I almost forgot! Here, this is for you – said Tenzo as he pulled a scroll from his pouch and handed it over to Naruto. Naruto opened it and saw a sealing jutsu. He knew it was a storing scroll, but the seal that protected it was too advanced for him. He looked at Tenzo, and before he could ask anything, he replied – Jiraiya-sensei sent it for you. I don't know what's inside. He only said you will love it. However, you must train until you can break the sealing jutsu by yourself. By the look of it and based on your demonstration of fuinjutsu from yesterday, I would say you'll be able to open it within a year or so – a broad smile formed on Naruto's face. Ero-sennin had sent him a graduation gift. He needed to train harder to open it and see what's inside.

Oi, Niisan! How can you have this scroll if you're a clone? Is this gonna disappear after you disappear? – Naruto was genuinely curious. Tenzo laughed – I took the real scroll from the original as I was formed. You guys were just not paying attention to notice – Naruto was amazed – Enough talking, Naruto. We need to start training before we go to the Hokage Tower for our first D-rank mission – Naruto saved his godfather's scroll in his pouch and prepared to train.

Outside the Hokage Tower: Three and a half months later.

Naruto, Sasuke and Hinata stood outside the Hokage Tower, waiting for their sensei. Today was the day they'd get their first mission outside Konoha. Tenzo-sensei had promised them that today he would talk with the Hokage to ask for the first non-D-rank mission since they were ready for it. The last few months had been exhausting. Tenzo-sensei was more demanding than they thought. However, all that intense training paid off. They made significant progress during this time. It wasn't normal for them to arrive before Tenzo-sensei. He was extremely punctual and was always early. Today, they decided to show up earlier to get their mission as soon as possible. They waited for around ten minutes before Tenzo arrived.

Looks like you are in a good mood today, huh – said their sensei as he approached them – C'mon, sensei! Hurry up! Let's go inside! We need to get our new mission assigned! – Naruto urged. Tenzo just smiled at them. Team Seven entered the tower and headed to the missions' assignment room. As they walked into the room, they saw Team Ten standing there, waiting for their turn to get their mission. The news of the former Hokage taking a new team had spread quickly. Naruto found it odd that everyone was thrilled with the idea of Jiji training a team. Since they had become genins, he hadn't had time to spend with his friends. He knew nothing about them and was eager to know what having Jiji as sensei was like. Ero-sennin and Tsunade-obachan used to say it was exhaustive. Naruto and the rest of Team Seven went to meet Team Ten. Naruto, Sasuke and Hinata were shocked to see how much they had changed.

Ino had her hair pulled back in a twin bun locked by a traditional Japanese hairpin with a flower medallion dangling off the side. She also had fringes that covered her forehead protector. Her clothes were the usual, except that instead of a sleeveless shirt, she had one long sleeve covering her entire right arm while her left arm was sleeveless. Sasuke was surprised by the change in her hairstyle. Ino always bragged about her long and beautiful hair. He never imagined she would pull it back. Choji had his hair longer. His spiky brown hair now reached his shoulders, and he had a long black bo staff tied on his back. His expression was what changed the most. He had toughened up. However, his expression was again the same as always as soon as he saw Team Seven getting closer. Team Seven was more surprised by Shikamaru's change. He still had that lazy expression on his face. However, he looked brawnier and had two tanto swords tied to his hip on his back. Sasuke noticed he was ripped. Surely, he had been through intense physical training. Sasuke dared to assume his training had been more intense than his. It was also the first time Sasuke and the others saw the former old Hokage dressed in fighting clothes and not his typical robes. Sasuke remembered his father saying he looked up to the former Hokage. He needed to know why. He had heard rumors about his strength. However, he found it hard to believe such a short and old man would be that strong.

Hey, guys! Long time no see! – Naruto shouted as he met Team Ten. Ino yelled excitedly. It had been long since she had seen the two most popular boys in her class – Hi! Sasuke-kun, Naruto-kun. Hey there, Hinata! Wow! It looks like you three have been training a lot! – Team Seven failed to notice how much they had also changed over the past few months. Hinata was the one who stood out the most from Team Seven. Her hair was a little longer, lightly lower than her shoulders. She looked more confident. Ino was thrilled. She loved this new Hinata. She was excited to talk more with her and see how much she had changed. Naruto now had a medium-sized wooden box on his lower back. It had a set of scrolls he wrote for his missions. Sasuke had a new sword tied on his back. Team Ten noticed it was the same kind of sword Kazan-san had. It was the distinctive sword of the ANBU corps. Ino and her team noticed that Naruto and Sasuke had bruises and unhealed wounds. Shikamaru smiled. It looked like Team Seven also had a rough time training.

You're the one to talk! You guys changed a lot! – Naruto said as he patted Shikamaru on the back firmly. Hiruzen looked at the genins before him and smiled. He was pleased to see Team Seven. Tenzo bowed to the former Hokage. Both senseis were about to speak when Naruto spoke again – So, are you guys also here to get your first mission outside the village? – Shikamaru, Choji and Ino seemed puzzled. Shikaramu chuckled while Ino giggled. Team Seven looked at them, bothered by their reactions. Choji was the one who broke the silence – We've been taking missions outside Konoha for the past two months already. It's really cool, you know. Although, we never get a break with Sarutobi-sensei. We're training all the time. He beat Shikamaru's laziness out of him. You wouldn't recognize him – Choji shivered as he felt his sensei's hand on his shoulder – is it a complaint I hear? – Ino and Shikamaru shivered as well. The three of them responded in unison – No, sensei! It was not! – Hiruzen laughed loudly. Team Seven took a step back when they felt Hiruzen's presence when scolding his team. That's something Naruto had never seen in all the years he had spent with the old man. He never thought Jiji could be scary – You'll get another chance to catch up, guys. The Council is waiting for Teams Seven and Ten to assign us our missions – Tenzo said. Both teams were disappointed because they couldn't chat longer. Team Ten was the first to be called by the Council.

Team Ten stepped forward – Sandaime-sama, it's good to see you again. Your team completed your previous mission sooner than we expected – Ino blushed and cuddled when she heard the Yondaime Hokage praising her team – it was perfect timing, though. I have the ideal mission for Team Ten – Minato handed over a scroll to Fugaku – It is a B-rank mission. We have a traitor. He killed his teammates during a mission earlier today and fled. Your mission is to bring him back for interrogation. We need to know to whom he plans to leak information – said Fugaku as he read Minato's report. Hiashi spoke next – The mission they were undergoing was northeast from here. We suspect he is heading to Kumogakure. You need to get him before he crosses the border with one of the great nations. You have authorization to go into the smaller countries if required. We'll deal with politics later. As long as you don't invade the Land of Lighting, we can fix it – Hiruzen and his team nodded in agreement.

Hiruzen stepped forward and took the scroll with the details of the mission. Team Ten bowed to the Council and headed out – Bye, guys! Have fun on your first mission! We need a girls' night with Sakura, Hinata! Lots to catch up with – said Ino as they walked next to them. Shikamaru didn't say anything, but he moved his lips so his friends could read his lips – Save me from this – he muttered. Choji just waved and smiled at them as he passed them by. Team Seven was excited. That was a damn cool mission. They hoped their mission was as good as Team Ten's.

Team Seven, step forward – Hiashi ordered. He was glad to see his daughter. He still couldn't figure out how she seemed more assertive and self-confident, yet still had difficulty sparing against her younger sister or improving in her gentle fist. Tenzo has been doing a great job so far. He still would've preferred to have the Sandaime training Team Seven instead of Team Ten. A vision that Fugaku shared. When Minato informed them that the former Hokage had requested to train a team, their initial guess was that he intended to train T-7. Fugaku couldn't hide a proud smile as his son stood before him. Sasuke noticed and smirked. Minato looked at his son with a broad smile on his face. Naruto tried to smile back at him, but he just didn't feel like it. Minato's smile vanished.

Your sensei requested a mission outside the village. Your first mission is a protection mission, a C-rank mission – Minato was talking when he was interrupted by his son – Oi, Dad! How come Team Ten got a B-rank mission, and we got a C-rank, huh? That's not fair! – Naruto sat on the floor, legs and arms crossed. Sasuke seemed upset as well. He was expecting a C-rank mission. However, now that he knew Team Ten got a B-rank mission, he couldn't help feeling jealous. Minato laughed nervously before his son's bluntness. Tenzo knuckled Naruto on his head – My apologies, Hokage-sama. Naruto! You need to refer to the Yondaime as Hokage-sama or Yondaime-sama – Naruto rubbed his head – Oi, Sensei! You didn't need to hit me that hard! – Fugaku and Hiashi were still surprised by how much Naruto's behavior was so like his mother's. Hiashi cleared his throat so Team Seven could stop their loud discussion. They all stood firm as soldiers again. Naruto and Sasuke feared Hiashi more than they feared Fugaku.

As I was saying, you will have to escort and protect our client on his way to the Land of Waves and act as his bodyguard until you have dealt with a group of bandits that have been interfering with his job – Minato handed over the scroll to Hiashi to continue. Minato signed the guards, and they opened the gate. A grey-haired, bespectacled man with a large beard and dark eyes entered the room. He wore a sleeveless V-neck shirt with an obi, pants, and sandals. He also carried a towel around his neck and wore a pointed straw hat – This is Tazuna-san. He is a bridge builder. He heads to the Land of Waves to continue his work on the bridge connecting the Land of Waves with the continent's mainland. He and his crew have been robbed constantly during their work on the bridge. You need to escort him and eradicate these bandits so they can finish the bridge – Team Seven looked at the old man. He didn't look like an important person who would need protection. However, the idea of fighting some bandits was good. It looked like the C-rank mission wouldn't be that bad after all.

Are these brats supposed to protect me? The blond one with the super stupid-looking face looks especially weak – said the old man as he held a bottle of sake in his hand. Hiashi and Fugaku frowned at the old man, and he knew immediately he had made a mistake. Naruto took a few seconds to process what he had said, but when it did – I will kill you, geezer! – said Naruto as he tried to go against Tazuna, but he was held back by Tenzo, who took him by the collar of his jacket - What's the point of killing the man we're supposed to protect, Naruto? - Naruto stopped fighting him back and stayed put.

Team Seven is an elite team, Tazuna-san. The three genin who stand before you are our children – said Hiashi proudly as he pointed to Fugaku and Minato. Hinata blushed while Naruto and Sasuke smirked. They are an elite team, for sure. Hiashi wanted to boost their morale after they were let down for not getting a B-rank mission as Team Ten. They'd cheer up sooner than later with their mission, anyway. Tazuna was stunned. He really screwed it up – I meant no offense, Hiashi-san. I was just joking – said Tazuna, stuttering.

Not long after, they left the building. They headed straight to Konoha's main gate. Naruto started marching heartily until – Hey, Naruto! You seem eager to take the lead. Do you have any idea where the Land of Waves is? – asked Tenzo as Sasuke facepalmed and Hinata covered her mouth as she giggled. Naruto froze and turned his upper body to face his team with a silly smile on his face – Hey! Am I really going to be safe with this brat? – he might be the son of the Hokage, but the kid didn't seem too bright – No need to worry, Tazuna-san – Tenzo assured. They continued their journey to the Land of Waves.

Somewhere in the Land of Fire

Team Seven and Tazuna had walked for a few hours towards Minamiawaji City, a port city east of the Land of Fire. It was located south of Karatsu town. Tazuna intended to build a bridge that would connect the Land of Fire with the Land of Waves to increase trading between both nations.

Oi, Tenzo-Sensei! Are there also ninjas in the Land of Waves? – Tenzo was surprised to hear Sasuke's voice for the first time on their trip. Naruto, on the other hand, hadn't stayed quiet for more than 5 minutes. They had just passed by a couple of puddles – the Land of Waves is a very small country with no military. I'm afraid you might be disappointed if you guys were expecting a fight against other shinobis. The bandits we'll face won't have any special training – Tenzo looked at Tazuna from the corner of his eyes as he spoke. The old man seemed to stiffen up, and his eyes saddened. Konoha had received news that the Land of Waves was being controlled by a mob led by a man called Gato. The Hokage and his council suspected Kirigakure was trying to get ahold of the Land of Waves through Gato. They wouldn't be too bold to support a mob leader openly. However, Minato hoped they could find some Kiri-nin to capture and find out something about Kirigakure. It looked like it was Tenzo's lucky day.

Two shinobis emerged from the puddles they had just passed by. One wore a ragged black cape, a rebreather covering half of his face and a large, clawed gauntlet on his right arm; the second had a similar gauntlet on his left arm and wore a camouflage suit with bandages around his waist and a rebreather, like the first one. They passed unnoticed by Sasuke, Naruto and Tazuna. However, Hinata and Tenzo felt them. Hinata had no chance to warn her teammates. The two shinobis were too fast.

The second jumped above Tenzo while holding a shuriken chain connected to the clawed gauntlet from the other shinobi and trapped him. Both enemies pulled the chain and tore Tenzo to pieces. Sasuke, Naruto, Hinata and Tazuna were shocked. Hinata was trembling out of fear. They were too stunned to react. One shinobi appeared behind Hinata, and the other one behind Naruto. Both whispered – One down, brother. Let's get over with it – As they prepared to attack, Naruto pulled a smoke bomb from his pouch and threw it at the ground. In the middle of the confusion, he jumped as high as he could to get out of the smoke cloud. He pulled a scroll from his back wooden box and aimed it at the man trying to attack him. As it happened, Sasuke ran towards Hinata and pulled her just in time to dodge the clawed gauntlet. He pulled a kunai from his pouch, turned around and stopped the claw with the kunai.

From the cloud of smoke, the shinobi who attacked Naruto emerged, following him and ready to attack him in the air. Naruto activated his scroll with a victorious smile. Several explosive tags emerged from Naruto's scroll. The unknown shinobi was surrounded by them and was trapped in consecutive explosions. He managed to escape, but he was severely injured. He landed on the ground, breathing heavily. The left half of his body burned, and his gauntlet was destroyed – That was a good move, boy. But that won't be enough – the shinobi removed what was left of his gauntlet from his hand and threw it away.

Sasuke and his opponent jumped back away from each other – Hinata! Protect Tazuna-san. Naruto and I will deal with them – Hinata nodded hesitantly and stood before Tasuna, kunai in hand. She was trying hard not to cry – Sasuke-kun, Tenzo-sensei is …Enough, Hinata! Look at his body – Sasuke had no time to reason with her. She turned to look to where her sensei had been torn apart. She saw pieces of a wooden man; it was a mokuton clone. She activated her Byakugan to look for him. Sasuke pulled six shurikens from his pouches and held three on each hand between his knuckles. He threw the shurikens, and as soon as he did, he performed a series of hand seals – Katon: Hosenka Tsumanebi! – the shurikens were infused with the katon jutsu and spun faster, forming fire whirls as they advanced. Sasuke hadn't yet learned how to infuse his weapons with his elemental chakra naturally. However, with Tenzo's training, he had managed to infuse Katon and Ration in his shurikens and kunais once thrown. The shinobi on the cloak tried to block and repel the shurikens with his clawed gauntlet, but the force the Katon gave was too much for his gauntlet to handle. The third shuriken he stopped got stuck in his gauntlet, perforated deep in it, and reached his flesh. The pain distracted him, and two more shurikens hit his shoulder and thigh. He was impressed by the brats. He never expected these boys to be so good. They had underestimated them – Brother, let's not waste more time. Come here – the cloaked man ordered to the other shinobi.

Both shinobis stood together. Naruto joined Sasuke as well, ready for whatever might come. Both enemies performed a series of hand seals – Suiton: Suijinheki! – both shinobis spat a stream of water from their mouths. Both streams joined, and their force increased. The wave was too strong. Naruto and Sasuke had no jutsu broad or strong enough to block it. They needed to take Tazuna and dodge it. However, Hinata jumped before them before they could proceed, facing the approaching wave. She pulled both hands back, and as she pushed them forward – Hakke: Kuhekisho! – a strong, wide shockwave formed. It clashed with the approaching stream and repelled it. However, it seemed the stream was about to overturn the vacuum wall. Sasuke took Tazuna and jumped to safety away from the incoming stream. Hinata gave them enough time to react. Naruto took Hinata since she refused to give in to the enemy's jutsu. They could find a way to counterattack once regrouped.

Tazuna was holding tight to the log of a tree while sitting on a branch. Sasuke stood next to him on the branch. Naruto and Hinata were standing on another tree. Sasuke yelled to his teammates – Hey! Watch out! They could attack at any moment – They nodded and looked down for the enemies. As the steam created by the clash between the stream and the vacuum wall disappeared, they distinguished some figures. It was Tenzo-sensei, and he was holding both shinobis. They were knocked out. Team Seven smiled – Show off! – Sasuke thought, although Naruto said it out loud. Tazuna was speechless. Hiashi-san was right. They are an elite team. Sasuke took him back to safe ground, where Naruto and Hinata joined them.

You did an amazing job. I knew you could manage it by yourselves – Tenzo gave them a proud smile. Then his gaze changed to his scary face as he turned to see Tazuna – You and I need to talk – Tazuna gulped and nodded. Tenzo threw both shinobis to the ground – Hinata, block their tanketsus. Tie them up after that, boys – Tenzo didn't take his eyes off Tazuna. Hinata approached the shinobis and activated her Byakugan. She blocked their tanketsus. They won't be able to move or mold chakra for at least two days. Naruto and Sasuke did their part and tied them up. Tenzo performed some hand seals – Ninpo: Kuchiyose no Jutsu! – a cloud of smoke appeared before him, and as it dissipated, a large dark brown bear appeared. It had a gray pelt around its back, paws, and a round tail. The pelt had nine rectangular brown spikes on its back and four on each side of its head. It had long claws. Its face had a violet crescent moon on its forehead. Tied on its front right paw, he had Konoha's forehead protector. Tazuna and the others were baffled. Naruto and the others didn't know Tenzo had a summoning – it's been a long time since you last summoned me, Tenzo – said the bear in a deep, crispy voice as he stood up on his back paws. He was way taller than Tenzo-sensei, who looked short beside his summoning. Tenzo heard his students whispering, "Amazing!" He smiled – did you think I got my code name for nothing in particular? I'm glad to see you too, Gachiguma – the bear just snarled – I need you to take these two back to Konoha – Guchiguma looked at the two unconscious shinobis tied up on the ground – Kiri-nin?! Years in undercover missions with Jiraiya-sama and no luck at all. A few months with a bunch of genins, and you capture two of them? This is hilarious – said the bear as he walked towards the shinobis. Sasuke, Naruto and Hinata stared at the colossal bear as he walked by them. They just stepped aside to let him pass. He stood on four paws again and turned to look at the genins – Hey, brats! Don't stand there doing nothing! Put these two on my back and tie them up – the genins were too terrified to complain and did as were told.

You know for how long Konoha has tried to get ahold of someone from Kirigakure. I can't wait until we get back from this mission to take them to Konoha. I can only entrust this to you. However, if something happens and your life is in danger … – Tenzo was interrupted by his summoning – If I find myself in danger, I'll break the summoning and take these two with me. You'll just have to summon me once you're back in Konoha to get them. No worries, boy. I won't die – Tenzo smiled at him and patted the head of his bear friend. Guchiguma started to run. He was too fast for an animal of his size. Tenzo looked at him as he disappeared on the horizon. He hoped Guchiguma wouldn't find any other kiri-nin on his way to Konoha.

Tenzo turned to face Tazuna and got closer to him – Do you mind explaining yourself? These two were not after any of us. You said you needed protection from thieves, bandits, and gangs. You said nothing about trained shinobis from one of the five great nations – Tazuna was sweating. He took a deep breath and cleared the sweat from his face – You're right. This job is outside your duties. It turns out that a very powerful man is after my life. You must've heard his name before. The shipping magnate, Gato – Tenzo, didn't react. This was not what Tazuna was expecting.

So, Yondaime's-sama suspicions were correct. Gato was trying to overthrow the Land of Waves, and he had support from Kirigakure. Guchiguma would arrive at Konoha by the end of the day. Once Ibiki and Inoichi had finished with them, they'd know how involved Kiri was in this. The council would decide whether to send backups – Tenzo thought. He was evaluating whether to continue the mission or wait for the council's decision. However, if, for some reason, Guchiguma was forced to leave before reaching Konoha, he would be wasting time. These two were chunin-level shinobis. There is no way these are the leaders of Kiri's forces in the Land of Waves. He had to continue. He couldn't waste this opportunity – Your bridge is of great interest to the Land of Fire. The Daimyo is excited about it. It would undoubtedly increase our trading opportunities. In the Land of Fire's interest, Konoha will continue with this mission – Tenzo's words surprised Tazuna. He didn't see that coming. Naruto and Sasuke were happy about this. Their C-rank mission had escalated to a B-rank mission. Hinata didn't seem as happy as her teammates.

I appreciate it, Tenzo-san. The Land of Waves has suffered a lot since Uzushiogakure's downfall. We have no hidden village, and now that our protector is gone, men like Gato took advantage of our inability to defend ourselves. We've been uncommunicated from the world for around one year. Gato came to my homeland two years ago, promising a boost in the economy. However, he tricked us. He subjugated all the small businesses and forced them to submit before him. We had already started the construction of the bridge back then. He saw this as a threat to his new monopoly. He's been sending bandits and his mob members to attack us. Despite this, a few of us continue working on the bridge. He hired some rogue ninjas from Kirigakure a couple of months ago. They are something we can't handle. The construction of the bridge has stopped ever since. Many brave men died so I could go to Konoha and hire your services – Tazuna grimed. He mourned the loss of his friends. The mention of Uzushiogakure caught Naruto's attention. The Land of Waves was located southwest of Uzushiogakure, between Uzushiogakure and the Land of Fire. Naruto was about to talk and ask about his mother's home country. However, Tenzo interrupted. It was not the time to talk about it – We better get going if we want to reach our boat on time – Tenzo urged. Tenzo wondered why Tazuna referred to the kiri-nin as rogue ninjas. He needed to find out. There will be time to discuss it once they get to the Land of Waves. Tazuna bowed to them before resuming his journey. It was past midnight when they were close enough to see the port city of Minamiawaji. However, instead of entering the city and heading to the docks, Tazuna took them on a different path. They got to a small hut next to the coast. There was a small boat tied to a small wooden dock.

Tazuna approached the hut and knocked on the door in a specific sequence. A few seconds later, a man opened the door. He wore clothes and a hat similar to Tazuna. He and Tazuna exchanged an enthusiastic handshake – I see you made it, Tazuna-san. You got some ninjas from Konoha? – Tazuna nodded, turned around, and introduced the man to Team Seven – this is Kashi. He and I are the only survivors from the group that left to come for help. I wouldn't be here if it weren't for him – Tenzo and his students bowed to the man before them. Kashi noticed three of them were just children – Children? I was expecting more experienced shinobis, Tazuna! – Kashi seemed to lose hope. However, Tazuna smiled at the children – Oh, no need to worry, Kashi. These three are very talented boys. They defeated the Demon Brothers on our way here – the man just smirked. If these brats defeated the Demon Brothers, they had hope.

They got on the small boat from the dock and departed. A couple of hours later, they found themselves in a thick mist – We should see the bridge soon. The Land of Waves is at the base of the bridge – said Kashi. Naruto and the others were amazed by Keshi's ability to navigate in the middle of the thick mist and not lose course. A few minutes later, they could distinguish a huge shadow forming in the mist. As they got closer, they could see the bridge – Wow! It's huge! – said Naruto loudly – Hey! Be quiet! We don't want Gato's men noticing us. We'll be in severe problems if they do – Kashi reprimanded Naruto. He immediately covered his mouth and whispered, "Sorry." The end of the bridge was visible now. The docks were as massive as the bridge – We've avoided detection so far, but … We'll take the route that has vegetation. It will make it harder to spot us – Kashi suggested. Tenzo and Tazuna agreed. They navigated among some mangroves and canals until Kashi stopped on a small dock next to a battered hut. Tazuna and Team Seven stepped out of the boat – This is it for me, Tazuna-san. Good luck. The Land of Waves count on you, Konoha-nin – the man bowed to them and left on his boat.

OK! Take me home safely! – said Tazuna bluntly. Naruto was too excited. He walked ahead and pretended to search for enemies. He wanted to show off as Sensei did. He pulled a shuriken from his pouch and launched it at a bush. Everyone stayed silent – Hehe! Just a rat – said Naruto confidently – Hey, Midget! Stop acting like a moron and trying to show off. Our lives are in danger! – said Tazuna annoyed by Naruto's immaturity. However, Tenzo and the others heard a noise coming from the bush Naturo threw the shuriken at. Tenzo and Naruto got closer and found a white rabbit scared out of its mind by the shuriken. It was a snow rabbit. Tenzo found it odd. He turned around and looked at Hinata. He just gave her a sign with his head and Hinata and the others understood. Hinata activated the Byakugan.

A man stood hidden in the forest, seeing everything that had happened since the moment Team Seven had left the boat. The first thing he noticed was the girl. Those white eyes would be a problem for him. He knew the power of the Byakugan. Ao got one Byakugan during the last war. He wasn't a Hyuga, yet he was able to do so much with his white eye. He knew a pureblood Hyuga would be more problematic. He shouldn't underestimate the girl and the others. The captain was none other than the student of the Legendary Sanni Jiraiya, Tenzo Senju, the Bones Breaker of Konoha. No wonder the Demon Brothers didn't stand a chance. A few moments later, he saw Naruto's weak attempt to show off. Maybe he was overestimating them, after all. He noticed Hinata was about to activate her Byakugan. There was no point in hiding anymore. The mysterious man pulled his giant sword and threw it at Tenzo. The sword spun rapidly towards the jounin.

Watch out! – yelled Hinata as she ducked to dodge the incoming attack. Sasuke jumped backward. Naruto jumped forward to tackle down Tazuna, who stood frozen, watching the incoming sword. Tenzo ducked as Hinata did. The sword got stuck in a tree. They stood up. Sasuke, Naruto and Hinata stood before Tazuna, protecting him. They all looked up to see a man standing atop the sword's grip. The man was tall and noticeably muscular with light grayish skin, short spiky hair, dark brown eyes, and small eyebrows. He wore bandages like a mask over the bottom half of his face. He wore his Kirigakure's forehead protector sideways on his head. He was shirtless, with a belt crossing his chest to which he attached his giant sword. He also wore baggy pants with striped patterns and mimetic wrist-warmers extending up to his elbows, with matching legwarmers.

My, my! Kirigakure sent one of the big ones. I've longed to fight one of the Legendary Seven Swordsmen of the Mist for a long time. Zabuza Momochi, you'll find your end here. Konoha has waited too long to capture such a high-rank kiri-nin like you. There is so much you can tell us about your village; one way or another, you'll spill your secrets – said Tenzo calmly. Sasuke, Naruto and Hinata pulled their kunais, ready to fight. However, Tenzo gave them a sign to stop – Get back! This one is on a whole different level. You stand no chance. Against him, I might be forced to use my secret technique – Sasuke and the others were perplexed. Tenzo-sensei planned to use his Mokuton. He had told them during their training that he rarely used it on his missions, and when he did, he had to kill every witness. The existence of the Mokuton had been kept a secret from the other nations for years. He said only a few enemies had pushed him to the point of recurring to his Mokuton. The only one who had escaped alive so far was Roshi of the Lava Release. However, Iwagakure and the Tsuchikage hadn't shown signs of knowing about it. Jiraiya-sensei said the relationship between Roshi and the Tsuchikage wasn't friendly. He thought Roshi must have kept it hidden from Iwagakure. If Tenzo-sensei was willing to go all in, it means that the man before them was dangerous indeed.

I cut my ties with Kirigakure long ago, bones breaker, but I'm not a snitch. You're the one who's gonna die here, though – Zabuza squatted atop his sword's grip. So, this is why Tazuna referred to them as rogue ninjas – Now, let's cut the chit chatting. I have to kill that old man – the genins took their fighting stand again, protecting the bridge builder, who was trembling out of fear – I guess I have no option but to kill you first, Konoha scum – Zabuza pulled his sword out of the tree and jumped to the lake next to them. He moved too fast for the genins to keep track. His sword was on the belt when they saw him on the lake. He raised his left hand and formed a seal with his right hand – Ninpo: Hidden Mist no Jutsu! – a thick mist formed around the area. Zabuza was gone.

Zabuza Momochi is known as an expert in silent killing. You don't notice until you're already dead. Be careful. Hinata, activate your Byakugan – Hinata activated her Byakugan. The mist was getting thicker. Sasuke and Naruto could barely see their hands holding their kunais. Zabuza emanated a powerful killing intent. Sasuke, Hinata, Naruto and Tazuna shivered. The four of them were sweating – What an incredibly dangerous chakra. It feels like I'll be killed if I make a single move. This could drive a person crazy … – Sasuke felt so defenseless. He'd never had intrusive thoughts like these – This is the strength of a Jounin. It feels like my life is being squeezed … I can't take it anymore … I'd almost rather die now and get it over with … – Naruto and Hinata were having similar thoughts. Hinata was so terrified that she wasn't tracking Zabuza. The fear paralyzed her – I'll chop you up piece by piece. I'll feed the sharks with your limbs and keep your heads as trophies. They'll make a lovely decoration on my hideout – Zabuza's voice was so sinister that the three genin were shaking out of fear.

Hey, guys! Knock it out! You don't have to worry. I'll protect you with my life – somehow, Tenzo inspired their confidence. Their shaking started to fade away – Hinata! Look for him! – Hinata nodded and was about to reactivate her Byakugan when Zabuza appeared behind the three genin, standing between the genins' back and Tazuna – We'll see about that – Zabuza prepared to attack with his sword – It's over – Tenzo moved so fast and pushed his students away. He stabbed Zabuza in the stomach with a Kunai. Tazuna and the genin ended up on the ground. A second Zabuza appeared behind Tenzo – Sensei! Behind you! – yelled Naruto. The stabbed Zabuza turned into water. Tenzo turned around, but Zabuza was faster. He swung his giant sword and cut Tenzo in two. Hinata screamed. Tenzo's body turned into mud – A doton bunshin? – Zabuza knew so little about Tenzo, other than he was Jiraiya's student and he was a Senju. Four earth walls rose from the ground and closed in, trapping Zabuza among them. The walls compressed so much that Zabuza couldn't move. Zabuza's body was trapped up to his shoulders – Be a good boy and stay there – said Tenzo as he stood behind Zabuza, holding a kunai on his neck – It's over, Zabuza. If you don't want to experience firsthand why people call me Bones Breaker, you better start talking. You'll tell me everything I want to know about Kirigakure – said Tenzo. Zabuza laughed maniacally – Sensei! Behind you! – yelled Hinata. Tenzo stabbed his kunai in Zabuza's neck, another water clone. He jumped sideways as the other Zabuza approached behind him sword-handed. Tenzo dodged Zabuza's sword. Zabuza back-kicked Tenzo as the latter dodged his sword. Tenzo was thrown away into the lake.

Tenzo emerged from the lake, but Zabuza was standing behind him waiting for him – Suiton: Suiro no Jutsu! – a sphere of water formed around Tenzo. The pressure of the sphere was so much Tenzo could barely move inside it – It was foolish of you to try to escape into the water against me. I'll finish you later. First, I'll deal with the old man and your students. Suiton: Mizu Bunshin no Jutsu! – a new Zabuza formed from the water of the lake. It got out of the water and started walking towards the genin – you feel so strong and important wearing those forehead protectors like real ninjas.… You're still too young to know what being a ninja really means. Tell me your names, brats. I want to remember the names of the coward scum of Konoha who let the old man die because they were not strong enough – Zabuza's clone was getting closer to them. They said nothing. Naruto and Sasuke stood together, holding their kunais. Hinata stood behind. Surprisingly for her teammates, she wasn't trembling at all – We'll give you our names so you can remember the genin who defeated you in the afterlife! – said Sasuke boldly. Naruto smiled at him. He stole his line – I'm Sasuke Uchiha, and the man who will stop your heart beating – Zabuza chuckled. Does this boy possess the Sharingan? He wondered. It would be nice to get a Sharingan and a Byakugan. That would help him achieve his goal. Naruto extended his fist – I'm Naruto Namikaze, the man who'll surpass all Hokages! – Zabuza and his clone were aghast. This boy. The real Zabuza spoke – Namikaze, huh? That means you're … – here it goes again, thought Naruto. He is going to compare him with his father. He hated it – That means you're Kushina Uzumaki's son. I didn't expect this. I might have some fun with you before killing you all – Naruto was shocked. He never knew his mother's name was famous too – You don't care about my father? – asked Naruto curiously. Zabuza's clone stopped. The real Zabuza spoke again – I know your father's reputation very well. I've never seen him fight, though. I don't let myself be impressed with stories. Your mother, on the other hand, I've seen her rage firsthand – Naruto, Sasuke and Hinata were shocked. Tazuna was surprised to hear the name as well. How could he have forgotten? The Yondaime's Hokage wife was the last living Uzumaki, and Naruto was their son – You've fought my mom? – asked Naruto. It was as if everyone had forgotten about the situation they were in. "Shit" was Tenzo's only thought.

I didn't fight your mother. However, I was there when Uzushiogakure and the Uzumaki Clan fell. Your mother fought my division captain, Mei Terumi. I had never seen Mei-senpai having a hard time fighting against a single opponent. That battle was beyond impressive – Naruto's chakra started to burst as he heard Zabuza. He was there! He killed his family! Naruto couldn't control himself. His chakra was out of control. Anger was taking over him – This is not good! – thought Tenzo inside the water prison. Tenzo could sense how the Kyubi's chakra inside Naruto started to emerge – what an impressive chakra, boy! You're indeed your mother's son. This will be fun – Zabuza's clone took his sword and prepared to attack.

It's been a long time since I had children's blood on my hands – Zabuza had a gloomy expression. Naruto's anger was shadowed by his reaction before these words. Sasuke gulped – When I was about your age… these hands were already dyed red with blood – Zabuza was speaking when Tenzo interrupted – Demon of the Hidden Mist, Zabuza – Zabuza and his clone turned to look at Tenzo. The real Zabuza spoke – I see. You've heard about it. No wonder you know about it. Konoha used to be our ally back then, after all – Zabuza's voice was more sinister than before. Tenzo spoke again from his prison – Long ago, in Kirigakure, also called the Village of the Bloody Mist… – Naruto gulped this time. The name itself couldn't mean anything good – … there used to be a final requirement for becoming a ninja – Zabuza's eyes were wide open – You even know about our graduation exam, huh? – Zabuza seemed to get angrier and angrier at Tenzo – gra… graduation exam? – asked Hinata, stuttering. Zabuza laughed evilly. He stared at them with a fierce killing intent – Fights to death between the students – Tazuna and the genin shivered. Tenzo continued – Friends who had trained and grown up together were pitted against each other until one lost his life. Years ago, Kirigakure's graduation exam was forced to change. This was due to a horrendous result from the previous exam – Hinata was disgusted – a horrendous result? What can be more horrendous than making children kill each other? – she was furious. It was unnatural for Hinata to be so upset.

Zabuza's clone stepped forward. Naruto and Sasuke stepped backward. Tenzo spoke again – Without stop or hesitation, a young boy who was too young to be present in the exam killed over a hundred students. That boy was Zabuza. You can't handle him. You must run away – Tenzo couldn't continue. Sasuke and Naruto were too shocked to react in time. Zabuza knocked them down. He had his right foot on Sasuke's chest and pointed his sword at Naruto's jugular. Hinata gasped. Hinata found courage by seeing her friends like this – Hakke: Kusho! – a shockwave hit Zabuza and threw him away. He had forgotten about the girl. However, he didn't know the Hyugas had this kind of technique. His knowledge of the Byakugan was limited to Ao's abilities, who couldn't use the gentle fist.

Sasuke and Naruto got back to their feet. Hinata jumped towards Zabuza with her Byakugan activated. She started to fight the man with her variation of the gentle fist. It was more aggressive than the regular gentle fist. However, Zabuza's clone was dodging her fists with ease. He blocked one of the attacks with his sword. An electric shock went through the sword – Raiton? This should be interesting – During her training with Tenzo-sensei, and thanks to her impressive chakra control, she learned to release an electric charge through her fingertips. With this, even if she didn't manage to hit and close the tanketsus with her gentle fist, she would gradually numb the enemy's senses. Eventually, the limbs would be fully numb, and the opponent wouldn't be able to use them. Tenzo thought of this resource based on Tsunade's ability to mess with someone's nervous system by injecting an electric chakra pulse through the body. Hinata's variation was still eons to be as effective or dangerous as Tsunade's.

Meanwhile, Sasuke and Naruto approached him from the sides. Both performed a series of hand seals – Futon: Sunabokari!Katon: Gokakyu no Jutsu! – Naruto's jutsu produced a large cloud of dust that extended until the lake where Tenzo and the real Zabuza were. Sasuke's fireball was getting closer to Zabuza. Hinata took advantage of the cloud of dust and Sasuke's fireball to jump into the lake. She was the only one so far who could walk on the water. She stayed far enough from the real Zabuza and performed a series of hand seals – Raiton: Sandaha! – Hinata produced an electric shock from her body, electrifying the entire lake and herself in the process. Zabuza felt the shockwave and was forced to jump to avoid being electrified. He had no option but to release Tenzo's water prison. As soon as Zabuza broke his prison jutsu, she stopped hers. She didn't want to electrocute her sensei. She, as a Raiton user, had a higher resistance to electricity. However, her body felt numb after getting her own electric wave magnified by the water.

The original Zabuza landed again on the lake. He took his sword and went straight to Hinata. However, Tenzo blocked Zabuza's attack with his ANBU sword – I must praise you for capturing me, Zabuza. But I'll warn you, I never fall twice in the same jutsu – They clashed swords once more and jumped away from each other. Zabuza started to perform a series of hand seals that Tenzo recognized. He performed the same hand seals – Suiton: Suiryudan no Jutsu! – two water dragons formed from the lake and charged at each other. Zabuza's clone disappeared when the two dragons collided. The clash of both water dragons created a massive wave that turned into an explosion of water.

When the water settled down, and the others could see what was going on, they saw Tenzo and Zabuza having a sword battle. Tenzo's sword broke with the last blow. Zabuza was ready to strike the final blow. However, Tenzo stopped the giant sword with a kunai – Not many shinobis can block Kubikiribocho. I'll let it absorb your blood to get stronger – said Zabuza as he kicked Tenzo in the stomach. He was ready to go after the jounin – Your mistake was underestimating me, Zabuza. You attack without knowing my abilities – Tenzo performed a series of hand seals – Suiton: Daibakufu no Jutsu! – Zabuza was shocked. That was one of the highest Suiton techniques. He had no time to react. A massive volume of water was propelled high into the air. At some point, it cascaded down onto Zabuza as a water vortex. The force of the jutsu was such that it washed away the mangroves and created a hole in the ground through its path. The stream carried away Zabuza until he clashed with a huge tree that resisted its force. As the stream weakened and Zabuza could move again, he sensed Tenzo. He looked up. Tenzo was standing atop a tree branch.

It's over, Zabuza – said Tenzo as he performed a series of hand seals – Mokuton: Mokusatsu Shibari no Jutsu! – multiple branches emerged from the tree behind Zabuza. These branches surrounded him and tied him up tight to the tree – This is impossible! Only the Shodaime Hokage was able to use this Kekkei Genkai! – Zabuza was dumbfounded. He could feel his chakra being absorbed – I told you already. Your mistake was attacking me blindfolded. You should've killed me when you had the chance. You must've noticed it by now. Your chakra is being drained by my Mokuton. Soon, you'll pass out – Zabuza cursed him. He let himself be carried away by the emotion of the fight and let his guard down.

Tenzo kept his jutsu active, draining Zabuza's chakra. However, Tenzo felt the air getting colder. He could see his breath – What's going on? – Sasuke and the others asked, awestruck. A thick mist covered the area again as the tree where Zabuza was trapped froze and was covered in ice. The ice covered the branches that kept Zabuza trapped. He was starting to lose conscience. Hinata activated her Byakugan – Sensei! There is another shinobi on the other side of the tree you stand – Hinata informed her sensei. It was too late. The shinobi moved too fast. Now that the branches were ice-covered, they were easy to break. He broke them with a kunai and released Zabuza. Zabuza leaned on him, and the new shinobi helped him get away. They stood on the other side of the lake.

The other man wore a pinstriped outfit, which stopped at his knees. Over this, he wore a green haori with white trimmings and around his waist a brown sash with a fringed trail wrapped around his waist twice. He also wore light-brown platoon sandals with straps the same color as his kimono and nail polish on his fingernails and toenails in matching bluish-green color. His hair was gathered in a white bun holder, while two locks fell loose, framing his face, bound with metal hair cuffs at the ends. He had a black Kirigakure's forehead protector. His face wasn't visible since he wore a white mask like the ANBU's.

This was not part of the plan, Haku! – said Zabuza, trying to catch his breath – I know, but that wood-style jutsu wasn't in our plans either. I needed to do something – Tenzo jumped into the lake, a foolish move. He couldn't let Zabuza escape. This other man intrigued him. This kekei genkai, that shinobi… Haku performed a series of hand seals – Hyoton: Hissatsu Hyoso! – several large ice spikes emerged from the lake. The lake froze as the spikes advanced toward Tenzo. He had no option but to jump back – They're gone, sensei. They used some kind of shunshin no jutsu to escape. They're out of my range of vision – said Hinata. Tenzo stood there in silence. He was evaluating the situation. He had no option but to let them go.

Tenzo got back to his team – This is worse than I thought. Zabuza is one of the Seven Swordsmen of the Mist. He alone poses a huge threat. That other man bothers me even more – Tenzo was truly worried. The Hokage and the council sent them, knowing the mission could turn into a B-rank mission. However, this was more dangerous. This was an A-rank mission easily. There was no point in going back. Calling for backups didn't seem like an option. Any attempt to send word to Konoha would be intercepted. His only hope was that Guchiguma had made it to Konoha, and they sent backups. Otherwise, he and his team would have to deal with Zabuza and the Ice Release man alone. Tenzo wondered what could've driven one of the Seven Swordsmen and a member of the Third Mizukage's Clan to abandon their village – What's happening in Kirigakure? – Tenzo whispered to himself.

Sasuke, Naruto and Hinata had open wounds and were bleeding. It wasn't critical, but they needed to rest. His time inside that water prison and using that last massive Suiton jutsu exhausted him. He needed to rest, too – That was awesome, you guys! I never doubted you despite you looking so weak! – said Tazuna oddly cheerfully – Let's go to my home and relax for a while! I bet you're all hungry! – Naruto excitedly agreed. They all left for Tazuna's home.

Somewhere in the Land of Waves

Haku and Zabuza arrived at their hideout deep into the mangroves – You were reckless out there! If I hadn't intervened, you would've died! – said Haku. He was worried for Zabuza – I never expected that man to use the Mokuton and to have such control of the Suiton. His Suiton is as strong as mine. I made a mistake, but that won't happen again. Next time, I'll kill them for sure! – said Zabuza as he sat. Haku brought a bowl of water with a towel and placed it on Zabuza's head – Remove that stupid mask! You don't need it here – Haku removed his white mask to reveal a stunning, beautiful face. He smiled at Zabuza – You won't be able to fight for several days, though. That man drained almost your entire reserves of chakra. I didn't know the Mokuton could do that. You need to rest – Haku started cleaning Zabuza's wounds – If only she were awake. She is one of the best medical shinobis in Kirigakure – said Zabuza, looking at a room before him. A woman was lying on a bed, unconscious. A few weeks ago, some locals found her floating near the shore. When he heard about her, Zabuza sent Haku to take her from the hospital. She was unconscious and hadn't woken up during all this time. Haku stole some intravenous drips to keep her alive. Zabuza had said it was essential to know why she had fled Kirigakure. He wouldn't risk allowing Gato's men to find out who she was.

The woman had shoulder-length light brown hair. She was wearing white hospital robes. However, her shinobi uniform was carefully folded next to her bed. Her kirigakure forehead protector and glasses lay atop it. Unknown to Zabuza and Haku, she wasn't a real Kiri-nin. She was a shinobi from Konoha, a member of the Root and former Head of Konoha's Hospital, Nono Yakushi.

Notes:

*Haku has a slight resemblance to the Sandaime Mizukage. That's why I decided to make them both from the same clan. Haku's and Zabuza's stories will change based on this.

*Sasuke has not been through any traumatic event; hence, he does not have the Sharingan.

*Similarly, just in case you were wondering, Itachi hasn't awakened the Mangekyou Sharingan. No Uchiha Massacre means Shisui didn't sacrifice himself, which means Itachi never got the Mangekyou.

*Shisui does have his Mangekyou. He awakened it in events unrelated to the Uchiha Massacre based on Itachi Shinden.

*Naruto started training elemental chakra manipulation two months later than his teammates.

*I'll dig more into Zabuza's attempt at coup d'etat, Kirigakure and Yagura's downfall before the rebellion. Nono will be the means for that.

*I took the map of the Shinobi World from Naruto Fandom Wiki and made some modifications. Below are the links to the modified map for my story. You need to copy-paste and delete all the spaces and underscore in "com" before clicking enter.

Changes: Location of Land of Woods, Land of Iron, Land of Waves, Uzushiogakure. Other than that, everything remains the same as the one from Naruto Fandom Wiki. There are still 3-4 unnamed lands. As the story progresses, I might decide to update the map to give them a name. Maybe something from a movie, filler or a completely new country I might come up with. Karatsu Town and Minamiawaji City are real cities in Japan I used for the story. Just as FYI, the Great Naruto Bridge does exist. It is in Minamiawaji City in Japan.
