Chapter 10: The Factory

Tazuna's House:

I'm home! – said Tazuna as he entered his house. His daughter, Tsunami, rushed to hug him as a few joyful tears dropped from her eyes – I feared the worst! You were supposed to be back two days ago – said Tsunami as she let go of her dad. Tazuna placed one hand on her shoulder, and with the other, he rubbed his daughter's head – We had some inconveniences on our way to Konoha. Where is Inari? – asked the old man – He should be back soon. He went to visit Kaiza – the beautiful woman replied. Suddenly, she noticed the Konoha shinobis standing behind his father. It was obvious to her they had been in an intense battle. She rushed toward them – Please, come in! I'll prepare you some food. You need to rest. What happened? – she asked as Tenzo and the others walked in. Tazuna then told her everything as she served food for the Konoha nins.

You defeated the Deamon Brothers and Zabuza? You guys are amazing! – said Tsunami. Naruto, Sasuke, and Hinata blushed and gloated at the compliment – That's right! I'm incredible! I will be the hero who saves this country and becomes stronger than any Hokage! – said Naruto loudly as he stood up and took a triumphant stand – Y'all are gonna die. There is no such thing as heroes – Said an unknown voice. Naruto and the rest turned around to find a little boy standing at the door's frame. Naruto frowned at him – What did you just say, little brat? – Naruto was heading to the boy, but Tenzo pulled him back from his jacket – Stay put, Naruto! – said his sensei. Naruto made a tantrum and sat again – This is my son, Inari – Tsunami said - Inari, please apologize! They came here risking their lives to help us! – the boy stayed undisturbed; his face was expressionless – They came to die, Mother! No one can defeat Gato. Y'all are fools if you think there is such thing as hope for us. You better leave now and save your lives – said the boy as he walked towards his grandfather. He hugged Tazuna – You shouldn't have returned, grandpa! You had already escaped. Why did you come back? – Naruto and the others were shocked by the boy's attitude. They felt sorry for him. They couldn't imagine what must've happened for him to lose all hope and desire in life.

– I came back because of you, your mother, and Kaiza! – Inari abruptly let go of his grandfather when he mentioned Kaiza – My father was a fool! He would still be alive if he hadn't challenged Gato and his men! – said Inari furiously – Your father was a hero! He inspired all of us to fight for what's right! With the help of Konoha, we will save this country from Gato in Kaiza's honor! – said Tazuna as he stood up. Inari just stared at him. He didn't reply. He started walking towards the stairs. As he set foot on the first step, he turned his head – I'll start digging your grave, Grandpa. You'll die a fool, just like my dad – he continued walking upstairs. Tazuna and Tsunami saddened. Tsunami started to cry. Naruto was beyond upset. He was shaking out of anger – My apologies on my grandson's behalf. He is a good boy, but his father's death changed him dramatically, turning him into this sad and gloomy boy – said Tazuna as Tsunami continued weeping and sobbing.

Excuse me, Tazuna-sama. How did Inari's father die? – Hinata asked as a couple of tears dropped from her eyes. Tazuna sighed – It's too late now. You should get some rest. I can tell you everything tomorrow, that way I can be sure Inari won't be eavesdropping – Hinata and the rest nodded in agreement. Tsunami stood up – Let me show you your room; you need some rest – Tsunami guided the shinobis to the room where they'd stay. After they settled in their room and were alone, Tenzo spoke – You guys get some rest. Tomorrow we'll start a new training – his students seemed puzzled. They needed to hunt Zabuza down now that he was weak. Why would their sensei want to spend time training? As if he had read his students' minds, Tenzo spoke again – I drained most of Zabuza's chakra. He'll be out of combat for a few days. We're on an island. We'll most likely be dragged into the open sea in the battles to come. That's Zabuza's specialty. You need to learn how to walk on water to stand a chance to survive. As of now, only Hinata can do it. You guys have mastered tree walking, but walking on water is far more complex. We'll use the time to train until Zabuza shows up again. The other shinobi might be even more dangerous than Zabuza – the three genins gulped. Things got more dangerous than what they expected – Have some sleep. I'll go outside to quickly inspect the surroundings – Naruto and Sasuke offered to go with him, but Tenzo refused to let them come.

Once far enough from Tazuna's house and deep into the mangroves, Tenzo stopped and performed a series of hand seals – Ninpou: Kuchiyose no Jutsu! – Guchiguma appeared in front of Tenzo. However, he didn't look as strong and magnificent as before. He was severely injured and covered in bandages. Tenzo was shocked to see him like this – What happened? Are you alright? – he said as he approached his bear-friend – It looks worse than it is – said an unconvinced Guchiguma to his master – I'm sorry, kid. I failed you. I lost the Deamon Brothers – the bear was ashamed. Tenzo patted him on his head – It's all right. I'm glad you're alive. That's what matters. What happened? – Tenzo's voice was as gentle as when a father speaks to his child.

I was ambushed on my way to Konoha. It was an ANBU from Kiri. He… He was too strong, and he possessed a rare kekkei genkai. He used Hyoton Release! I thought the Sandaime's Mizukage clan was extinct! – Tenzo was flabbergasted. That man's techniques were strong enough to hurt and penetrate Guchiguma's skin. He would be a problem. He continued to listen to his friend – I fought him, but he caught me with my guard down. His techniques distracted me. He took the opportunity to kill the brothers. I was about to break the summoning and take the brother's corpses with me. Information can still be obtained from a corpse, so it was worth the shot. However, he trapped me in a rare jutsu with his ice release, preventing me from escaping. He tortured me … not for long, kid, don't worry. He wanted to know your intentions with the Deamon Brothers and Konoha's interest in Kirigakure. I said nothing, eventually, I managed to break the ice-prison that kept me trapped and broke the summoning immediately – Tenzo rubbed his friend's head – You did great, my friend. I'm relieved that you made it out alive – Tenzo gave a broad smile to his friend. Guchiguma smiled back at him – Kid, this is too dangerous. You're not here with Team Jiraiya. Your genins aren't ready to face this man. Retreat and come back with reinforcements. I didn't manage to get to Konoha. They're unaware of your situation. Reinforcements aren't coming your way – Guchiguma was genuinely worried.

They're stronger than you give them credit for, my friend. Besides, there is no coming back from this. I have no option but to face this man and Zabuza – Guchiguma roared in surprise – You mean that man is working with one of the Seven Swordsmen? Tenzo, you need backup from other jounin! Your genins have an exceptional heritage, and I'm sure they're formidable! But to face a Swordsmen like Zabuza and this Hyoton man is too much! – Tenzo smiled – They're strong, Guchiguma. I know we can pull this through. Now, leave and rest. You've earned it – Guchhiguma was about to argue with Tenzo, but he released the summoning jutsu, and the bear was gone in a cloud of smoke.

Tenzo stayed there, analyzing his situation. He was sure he could manage Zabuza in a one-on-one battle; having his genins with him and knowing what to expect would give him the triumphant card against Zabuza. However, there was so little, if any at all, he knew about the man with the Hyoton. Hinata's Byakugan should come in handy against him, but her hesitations will play against them on the battlefield. It was still unclear to him if there were more Kiri rogue shinobis with Zabuza. If that was the case, failure and death of his team were the most likely result. He was confident in his team's abilities and strength. However, he needed to give them more intense training the following week before Zabuza struck again. He could only hope the Hyoton man wouldn't attack on his own before.

Deep into the mangroves: the following day

Team Seven gathered deep into the mangroves, where they could train freely, avoiding being spotted by Gato's men. Tenzo stood in front of his team. Naruto and Sasuke were eager to learn to walk on water. It is not that they didn't know the basics, but the chakra control needed for that was too complicated. During their training sessions in Konoha, Tenzo had told them he wouldn't let them go on missions out of the village until they had mastered tree climbing and walking on water. Ultimately, Tenzo allowed them to take this mission even though only Hinata had mastered the water walking. It had made Sasuke and Naruto feel frustrated.

Sasuke and Naruto, you two will start the training on chakra control to walk on water. Let me be perfectly clear: time is upon us. We don't know if there are more shinobis from Kiri besides Zabuza and the masked man. I need you two to focus on this entirely. While you two train on this with me, Hinata will train with my clone – the three genins nodded. They were all determined not to let down their sensei. Tenzo created a wood clone and ordered Hinata to follow the clone while he stayed with Naruto and Sasuke.

With Hinata:

You did really well yesterday, Hinata. Your raiton was and will be extremely helpful against Zabuza. While Naruto and Sasuke train in their chakra control, I will help you train your raiton through sparring. I wish Sasuke could join us with this. His raiton is also strong, but it is more critical he learns chakra control.

Zabuza's Hideout

Zabuza was lying on the bed, unable to move, while Haku stood outside the hideout in case someone tried to attack now that Zabuza was weak. Zabuza couldn't stand the feeling of being drained of chakra. He felt weak. Something he had never felt before, even after his defeat against the Yondaime Mizukage. He didn't consider his defeat as a sign of weakness. Yagura was a perfect jinchuriki, after all, and the strongest shinobi in kiri, even without the power of the Sanbi. Now that he was forced to stay in bed until his chakra's reserves were restored, he couldn't help thinking about his failed attempt at a coup d'etat. He cursed Mei. If only she had joined him, they would've been able to defeat Yagura. He wondered what was going on in his homeland.

Nanigashi (Nono) was one of the best medical ninjas in Kiri and loyal to Mei and the Mizukage. What could've happened that made her flee? Now that he knew he had to fight Konoha's bonebreaker, he would demand higher pay from Gato. With that, he'll be able to hire a large number of mercenaries to carry out a new attempt to kill the Mizukage. He didn't want to take the position of Mizukage. He knew Mei was the best option once Yagura was disposed of. He only wanted to free Kirigakure from the horrors Yagura was carrying on. Zabuza was so engrossed in his thoughts he didn't notice Haku entering.

Zabuza-san, Gato and his bodyguards are getting closer – Haku's words brought Zabuza back to reality. It took him a few seconds to process what Haku had just said. He frowned. He didn't want Gato to find out about Nanigashi – Quick, Haku. Lock Nanigashi's room. Gato must not see her – Haku nodded and blocked the way to Nanigashi's resting room. He piled up so much stuff that the door was no longer visible.

Suddenly, the door burst open. Gato and his men didn't bother to knock – it looks like you aren't as deadly as you claimed, Zabuza. You were defeated by some of Konoha's scumbags. How disappointing. I expected more from one of Kiri's legendary swordsmen – Gato said in an ironic tone as he got closer to Zabuza's bed. Haku stood between Gato and Zabuza, blocking the mob leader's way. His bodyguards took their blades and pointed them at Haku. The air in the room started to cool down. The temperature dropped so much that they could see their breath. Spears of ice emerged from the ground, trapping Gato's bodyguards. Gato and his men were speechless. He didn't know about Haku's ability.

If you do so much as to talk to Zabuza-san like that again, that'd be the last thing you do, Gato-sama – said Haku with a coldness in his voice that made the others shiver. Despite the cold temperature of the room, Gato could feel how he started to sweat – Lower your weapons, you morons! They are our allies, after all, isn't that right, Zabuza? – said Gato with a trembling voice – Allies, you say? No, I wouldn't say so. We are business partners, and I must say that my price went higher after the encounter with Konoha – said Zabuza calmly from his bed. Gato snarled – Higher? How dare you! I'm already paying you a tremendous amount of money! I need the bridge builder dead! – Despite his weakened state, Zabuza was still a fearsome man. He emanated a dark aura with a strong killing intent. Gato gulped – You said nothing about fighting one of the strongest jounin from Konoha. The man protecting the bridge builder is no other than Konoha's bonebreaker, the disciple of the Legendary Sannin Jiraiya – Gato's bodyguards' jaws dropped. They knew both names. Konoha's bonebreaker was not only Jiraiya's disciple, but he was also a member of the Senju Clan. Rumors said that he was Tsunade's-hime illegitimate son. Gato had heard his name as well. It couldn't be good. Why would Konoha send such a high-profile shinobi to the Land of Waves? Gato bit his lip – All right, then. I'll double your pay, but I want the bridge builder, the bonebreaker and his team dead. I don't want Konoha to find out everything I have done here. Having one of the great nations on my toes is the last thing I want. Now, child, release my men. I have to get going – Gato demanded, but Haku did nothing. He was waiting for Zabuza's command.

Zabuza spoke, but not to order Haku to release the bodyguards – You'll increase my pay tenfold. The genins with the bonebreaker are the Hokage's and his two counselors' children. If I kill them, I will put a target on my back, and Konoha will hunt me down. I'm sure you don't want me to spread the word you hired me to kill the Hokage's son, am I right? – Gato was pale. Things were going south. Killing the Hokage's and the counselors' children would make Konoha take action against Zabuza and, ultimately, him. He needed to get rid of Zabuza and Haku after they'd finished their job – Deal! But you must keep your mouth shut about me if they capture you. The money I'll give you will be enough for you to retire and find somewhere to live where Konoha will never find you. Take a complete rest now. You'll need all your strength against the bonebreaker. No more mistakes, Zabuza – Zabuza nodded in agreement. Gato would use the time Zabuza would take to recover to find other rogue ninjas or mercenaries who could kill Zabuza and Haku once they had finished Konoha ninjas. He had heard news on the black market about an organization of mercenaries on the rise. They were getting a good reputation among the higher authorities of the black market.

What are your thoughts, Haku? – Zabuza questioned after seeing Haku's expression hardened – I don't understand, Zabuza-san. Why don't we just kill Gato and take his money? Killing his mediocre henchmen would be easier and faster than fighting that Mokuton shinobi – Zabuza laughed. Haku found it odd and insulting – You're too naïve, Haku! The underworld of the Shinobi world is as big as any of the five great nations, hidden in plain sight. Gato's been rising within the underworld ranks; killing him is as much as declaring war on the underworld leaders. I would rather face Konoha's wrath than Meio's – Haku had no idea what he was talking about.

Meio? Who is that? – asked Haku, intrigued – Meio, the Dark King. Some people call him Kurokage, the kage of darkness. He is the top authority of the underworld. You see, the underworld has no boundaries, like the shinobi nations. Everyone submits to a single authority. His identity is unknown, but he is infamous for his cruelty and taste for suffering. Even the underworld has a code. If you dare to break it, Meio will hunt you down. The Sandaime Mizukage once said Meio liked an ordered chaos. He wanted to meet him and fight him personally. The Sandaime's greatest desire was to find out how strong that man was – Haku was speechless. Zabuza loathed the Sandaime and Yondaime Mizukage for the way they ruled over Kirigakure, yet he seemed to have some sense of respect toward them whenever he spoke about them. He assumed it was for their strength. Zabuza valued strength over anything else. That's why he had sworn to become the strongest to protect Zabuza and help him achieve his goals.

With Naruto and Sasuke

Tenzo and his disciples were standing at the shore of a lake – Let's go over this again, boys. You need to keep a flow of chakra on your feet. You gotta remember that the chakra flow is not constant, unlike with tree climbing. Trees and rocks are solid surfaces; it's easier to stay connected through a constant flow of chakra to their surfaces. Water is in constant movement. Even if the water is still, you disrupt the surface tension as soon as you start walking on it. You have to adjust your chakra flow as necessary; either you increase it or decrease it to avoid breaking the surface tension – Tenzo's words made no sense for Naruto. He seemed he was about to have a stroke trying to understand what his Sensei just said – It's easier said than done, Sensei! How are we supposed to adjust our chakra flow during a battle? – Naruto crossed his arms, puzzled – I must agree with the knucklehead, Sensei. We got used to feeling a certain amount of chakra on our feet while walking on vertical surfaces. Eventually, our body got used to it, and we didn't need to do it consciously. It is too hard to adjust it constantly! It is just impossible! – Sasuke, the proud genius, was upset. He felt like a failure. Tenzo noticed the frustration in both of his students. He sighed.

That's precisely the problem! You're still thinking about it! The best shinobis let their bodies react naturally to the situation! No, Naruto, before you say anything, it is not the same to let your body's instinct guide your movements than acting on pure stupidity and irrationality! – the blond shinobi frowned before his sensei's statement – You must stop thinking about it! Don't think about your feet and the chakra flow! Focus on your target ahead. You two can walk on water and stay there as long as the water's surface is not disrupted. Now, you two get to the lake's center and stay there until I say otherwise! – Naruto was about to argue, but Sasuke just walked into the lake. Naruto stopped and followed his friend.

Both genins walked into the lake carefully. They were trying not to disrupt the surface. They walked slowly until they reached the center of the lake. Tenzo followed them and kept a certain distance from them – Close your eyes and clear your mind. Good. Now, start walking around the lake slowly. Do not think about the water or your chakra. Just walk! – they walked around the lake for nearly two hours. It took them a little over an hour to start walking more confidently and with a steadier rhythm – You're doing great. Open your eyes now – Naruto and Sasuke were standing on opposite sides of the lake. They smiled – Now, you have to spar each other – What?! – both exclaimed – I told you already! Just focus your whole attention on the battle! You guys know each other's moves very well. Only when you two train can I see glances of pure instinct combat. You get so immersed in your battle that you forget about everything else! That's what I need from you right now! So, stop complaining and start fighting! – said Tenzo with a military authoritarian voice.

Naruto and Sasuke started to fight. They went easy initially, and as they got more engrossed in the battle, they began to get serious and fight as usual. Tenzo had been using his suiton without them noticing it to create waves and make the water's surface more violent. The spar was going on as Tenzo was expecting when suddenly – Amazing, boys! You two are indeed your fathers' sons – yelled Tazuna loudly as he saw Naruto and Sasuke's intense battle. They turned to look at the old man. For a moment, they lost concentration and realized they were standing on turbulent waters. Their excitement made them remember their chakra flow, and they suddenly sank into the lake. They emerged from the surface, wholly wet but with broad smiles. Tenzo smiled, too. This has been the longest they've stayed on water. You guys need a break. Come over. Looks like Tsunami-san sent some appetizers. Naruto and Sasuke were indeed hungry. Tenzo performed a hand seal and dissipated the clone that was with Hinata. She would understand it meant she needed to get back to the lake. A proud smile formed on Tenzo's face as the memories of his clone came back to him. It appeared Hinata had found the motivation she needed. They waited for a few minutes until Hinata arrived.

They were just finishing lunch when Tazuna decided to say something – It is still hard to believe you're an Uzumaki, boy! Most of them were redheads – Tazuna's words caught the genin's attention. Naruto choked as he tried to speak mouthfull. He had forgotten the old man knew his ancestors. He needed to know more about them and wouldn't let Tenzo-sensei get in the way – Hey, old man! You said you knew the Uzumaki clan and Uzushiogakure! Tell me everything about them! – Naruto was beyond excitement. Sasuke and Hinata were intrigued, too. Tenzo sighed. There was no point in trying to stop it. He would stop Tazuna if he got into too many details.

You're telling me you know nothing about Uzushiogakure and your mother's clan? – Tazuna asked, astonished. Naruto nodded sadly – It was under Kushina's-san request that Konoha stopped teaching about it. The fall of her clan and homeland only brings sad memories to her. I promised Naruto I would tell him his clan's history. Perhaps you can help me with this, Tazuna-san – Tenzo gave a severe look at Tazuna. The bridge builder understood he needn't talk about the whole story – Do you know at least your grandfather's name? I've never met your mother, but perhaps I met your grandfather – asked Tazuna gently. Naruto looked down. He didn't know. Suddenly, he remembered what Tenzo-sensei had told him – Ashina Uzumaki! He was my great-great-grandfather! – said Naruto loudly. Tazuna fell on his back. That name! This boy's legacy was impressive! He tried to speak again, but the words didn't come out. Sasuke and Hinata were even more intrigued now. Once he pulled himself together, Tazuna spoke again – My dear lord! I only saw Ashina-dono once when I was a child. He was said to be as strong as Hashirama Senju and Madara Uchiha! I did know your grandfather very well, though – Tazuna wiped out the sweat from his face. Madara Uchiha, who is that man? Sasuke wondered – If Ashina-dono was your great-great-grandfather, that means your great-grandfather was Shigeru Uzumaki, your grandfather was Satoshi Uzumaki, he was the leader of Uzushiogakure during the last war. To be honest, I had no idea Satoshi-dono had had a daughter. I guessed he kept his relationship with her a secret to protect her – the last war, Naruto thought. That's when the tragedy happened! Zabuza had been there. When they capture him, he will make him talk.

The Uzumaki were respected in the shinobi world the same way as Uchihas, Senjus, and Hyugas. Those four clans are said to be some of the oldest and strongest in shinobi history – Tazuna stared at the three genin in front of him as he said it. The three looked at each other. Were their clans really that important and strong? - The Uzumaki clan was a clan of peace. They would only interfere in a battle to prevent more bloodshed. During the clans' war era, they would act as mediators. However, if forced to fight, they were formidable. Their sealing techniques were feared even by Madara Uchiha – that name again. Sasuke wondered why this name seemed familiar. Naruto stood up, proud of his clan – Ashina-dono was an honorable man. He led his country with passion and justice. However, … – he made a long pause. Tazuna met Tenzo's eyes, looking for permission to continue. Tenzo nodded – Shigeru-dono was jealous of his father. Even after Ashina's-dono passing, Shigeru-dono felt he still lived under his father's shadow. His way of ruling over his country became a dictatorship. He distanced his village from Konoha and got into closer relations with Kirigakure. The Sandaime Mizukage was known for his cruelty and bloodlust. He is the one who started the graduation test Zabuza told you about. The current Mizukage was the Sandaime's most trustworthy general. He was the one conducting and leading these exams. Shigeru-dono ruled with an iron fist. The people got fed up with him. Fearing a civil war, Satoshi-dono, your grandfather, led a coup d'etat. He challenged his father for the right to rule Uzushiogakure. He killed his own father to protect his village. He severed his relations with Kirigakure and reinstated the brotherhood with Konoha.

Naruto felt sick. Had his grandfather killed his great-grandfather? How was that possible? Sasuke was still so shocked by everything that he didn't notice Naruto's reaction. Naruto held his hand close to his chest. He was breathing heavily and about to cry when he felt Hinata's hand on his shoulder. He turned around to find her teammate's gentle face – Everything is alright, Naruto. Your grandfather was just trying to protect his people. He was a hero – Naruto felt calmer when he saw Hinata's smile. Somehow, she always managed to cheer him up – She's correct, boy. Satoshi-dono was broken after that. Despite all his father's flaws, he still loved him. He was a gentle and lovely man, but you could see the sadness and sorrow never left him after that. They were always present in his eyes – said Tazuna melancholically.

With Satoshi-dono as leader, the relationship between Konoha and Uzushiogakure was as strong as when Ashina-dono and Hashirama-dono led their countries. Satoshi-dono became a close friend of the Sandaime Hokage. They both shared their distinctive mercy. Together, they brought the Second Great War to an end, and because of them, the other nations stayed quiet and in peace for many years. Until… – Tazuna rubbed his forehead. He looked for Tenzo's approval again. Then he continued – … the last war broke out. Iwagakure attacked Sunagakure when the Kazekage suddenly disappeared. They had been allies during the first two wars. Iwa's betrayal shocked the world. Suna found itself without allies and a leader. Kumogakure, another ally of Suna, quickly joined the war, supporting Iwa's siege on Suna. Hiruzen-dono couldn't tolerate such betrayal. Despite Suna having been Konoha's enemy for years, he responded to Suna's call for help. Uzushiogakure and Kirigakure were Konoha's allies. However, they decided to stay neutral. Months later … – Tazuna was interrupted by Tenzo – Let me take it from here, Tazuna-san – The bridge builder nodded.

Tenzo's expression was solemn. He took a quick look at Naruto; then he continued – Something you must know is that the first two wars broke out with the sole purpose of eradicating Konoha. Konoha always faced wars for the first portion alone against two or three great nations. Kirigakure only got involved in the battle when they knew Konoha had the upper hand. The Sandaime Hokage might be the most merciful Kage, but he is also the strongest. That's why other nations always needed to team up against him. Uzushiogakure, as Tazuna-san mentioned, would act mainly as a mediator. They would rarely get involved in wars. At some point in the last war, Iwa and Kumo focused their attack on Konoha instead of Suna. Kirigakure sent word saying they were on their way to support Konoha in their front against Kumo. They asked permission for Uzushiogakure to land in their country to rest and resupply – Tenzo sighed, and Tazuna looked down to the nothingness – Uzushiogakure accepted. However, it was a trap. Kirigakure arrived with an immense fleet transporting not only Kiri-nin but also Kumo-nin. It was a coordinated siege between Kumo and Kiri on Uzushiogakure. Kumogakure sent the Nibi's jinchuriki to lead the attack, while Kiri's troops were led by the Sandaime Mizukage, the current Mizukage who is the Sanbi's jinchuriki, and Mei Terumi, second general of Kirigakure's army, along with the rokubi's jinchuriki. Uzushiogakure, despite being as strong as they were, were outmatched in numbers. They resisted the siege for a long time. Long enough for Satoshi-dono to call for help to Konoha. The Sandaime Hokage abandoned the front against Iwa to lead the support team to Uzushiogakure, but it was too late. There were no survivors. However, Kumo and Kiri were still on the island. The Sandaime, Jiraiya-sensei, Orochimaru, your mother and the old counselors unleashed Konoha's wrath upon Kiri and Kumo. In the process of the battle, the Sandaime Hokage killed the Mizukage of the time and wound the current Mizukage of death, forcing him and Kiri to flee. According to Jiraiya-sensei, it's been the only time he's ever seen the Sandaime being so driven by bloodlust. Kiri's and Kumo's battalion were nearly eradicated.

The genins were flabbergasted. They didn't know how to react. The first two wars were undoubtedly driven by greed and lust for power. However, the last one had been marked by acts of treason. Treason to Sunagakure and Uzushiogakure. They were so engrossed in their thoughts when Tenzo spoke again – Kirigakure has always had an absolute rule over the seas. Their dominancy is, or was, unquestionable. However, Uzushiogakure was increasing its influence over the seas. Kiri saw this as a threat to their supremacy. On the other hand, the other nations always feared Uzushiogakure for their fuinjutsu techniques. It is still unclear to Konoha whether Iwagakure was aware of the plans to annihilate Uzushio. The Tsuchikage is a man with a sense of honor for those he respects, and he always respected the Uzumaki clan – Naruto was about to speak when Tenzo stopped him – It's been enough talking for now, Naruto. Besides, as I told you before, I was not present in that war. Next time we see the Sandaime or Jiraiya-sensei we can talk more about the subject. I'll continue teaching you your clan's techniques for the time being – Naruto didn't seem too pleased. But what he had learned was too much to process. He felt he needed time to take it all in. He decided not to argue.

Team seven continued with their respective training for the rest of the day and the following days.

Two days later, close to noon.

Tazuna arrived during Team Seven training – I don't want to interrupt, Tenzo-san, but I need a word with you – said the old man a little embarrassed. Tenzo ordered his students to continue training while he stepped aside to talk with the bridge builder – What's the problem, Tazuna-san? – Tenzo could see some people hiding behind the trees. Tazuna took his hat off – I know you guys are getting ready for the fight to come with Zabuza. However, we need to use this precious time of peace to advance in the construction. My men are refusing to get anywhere close to the bridge if you're not there to protect us. I'm deeply ashamed of coming here asking for your protection when I put you all in great danger by lying to you – said the old man avoiding Tenzo's gaze – No need for that, Tazuna-san. Starting today, I'll escort you and protect you and your men – Tazuna was not expecting the jounin to agree so easily – But… what about your student's training? – questioned Tazuna – I have a plan for that. I'll take Hinata with me today, while Naruto and Sasuke stay here with my clone, training. They will rotate everyday between doing patrols with me or staying here training – Tazuna seemed pleased by the news. Tenzo informed his students about it.

With Tenzo and Hinata:

Hinata, Tenzo and Tazuna arrived at the bridge, followed by Tazuna's crew. Hinata was delighted with the view from the bridge. It looked as mesmerizing as it did when they saw the bridge from the boat on their arrival at the Land of Waves. It was a clear day, and Hinata could see the continent's mainland far away and the port where the bridge would connect to the Land of Fire. Tazuna stood next to her – Impressive. Isn't it? – Hinata just nodded – How long do you think it would take you to finish the bridge, Tazuna-san? – Tenzo asked. Tazuna's crew started working as they talked – around a year and a half to two years if we get rid of Gato and his henchmen – Tenzo and Hinata were shocked. Based on the distance to the continent, they expected it would take around four years to complete it. Tazuna and his crew are undoubtedly amazing – How many more men does Gato have under his command? – questioned Tenzo. It was strange he hadn't attempted anything yet. Why would he wait for Zabuza instead of sending more low mercenaries? Tazuna wondered for a while, trying to get a reasonable estimate – nearly three or four hundred. Besides Zabuza and the masked men, two former samurais are in his troops. I heard their leader expelled them from the Land of Iron for being men without honor – this caught Tenzo's interest. Jiraiya-sensei had told him that Mifune, the samurais' leader, was strong and honorable. He rules and leads with a solid moral code. What could these two samurais have done to be forced into exile? – There is a factory north of the island. Ever since Gato arrived, he settled there. I don't know what he is doing there, but his mercenaries never leave that factory. They kill everyone who gets nearby. The two samurais are the ones who always follow and guard him – Tazuna noticed Tenzo was processing the information. So, he decided to leave and join his crew and start working.

Hinata looked at her sensei, puzzled. She got closer to him – is everything OK, sensei? – asked the young kunoichi. Tenzo looked at her – Seems like we have a mission for tonight, Hinata – Hinata just nodded assertively – Oi, Tazuna-san! How far is that factory from here? – asked the jounin. Tazuna looked at him, terrified – Do not even think about it, Tenzo-san! You'll get us into even more problems! – Tenzo responded with his scary face. It was terrifying enough to make Tazuna give in. He returned to Hinata, but before he could say anything, she activated her Byakugan. The factory should be within her range of vision. She found it. What she saw made her sick. She was shaking out of anger and disgust. She told her sensei what she saw – the Yondaime Hokage would never allow such a thing to happen under Konoha's knowledge. Tonight, we shut down the factory – said Tenzo, trying hard to contain his anger – Sensei, I agree with you. However, this will force Zabuza and the Ice-release man to act sooner, won't it? – Tenzo knew Hinata was right, but given his personal experience with Orochimaru, he wouldn't let go of this. He needed to do something – We're ready to face them again, don't worry, Hinata – Hinata nodded. She wanted so badly to do something about the factory as well.

Tazuna's home: Later at night.

Tazuna and his family were deep asleep. Tenzo didn't want to listen to Tazuna arguing about what they were about to do, so he waited until all of them had gone to bed. He was standing on the roof of the bridge builder's house. He stared at the moon; watching the moonlight had always soothed him. It, somehow, gave him a feeling of being back at home. After getting his memories back, he remembered sneaking out of his house with his little sister to appreciate the moon and the sky full of stars. After being taken in by Tsunade, she, Shizune, and Jiraiya accompanied him every time he sneaked out from the Senju Compound to watch the sky. Unlike his parents, they were elite shinobis and always noticed whenever he sneaked out. He had found a new family in them after the Yondaime Hokage had rescued him from the Root. Tenzo was immersed in what could've been hadn't he been abducted by Orochimaru and Danzo when his students landed on the roof to join him.

Naruto and Sasuke didn't know the details of the new mission. Tenzo-sensei just told them there was something they needed to deal with. They knew it had to be serious because of Hinata's and their sensei's behavior – Oi, sensei. Are you gonna tell us what this is about? – asked the young blond. Tenzo said nothing and gave them the sign to follow him. Once on their way, Tenzo and Hinata explained everything Hinata saw with her Byakugan. Sasuke and Naruto were beyond furious. Not even Sasuke could conceal his anger – Control your chakra, you two! We don't want them to notice us coming! I doubt Zabuza is in there, but we don't know if there are some shinobi able to sense us – Tenzo's voice was oddly severe. He was a strict sensei. However, they had never seen him like this. They took deep breaths and lowered the intensity of their chakra. They reached the edge of the mangroves near the factory – Hinata, inspect the area and give me the details – demanded Tenzo of the young kunoichi. Typically, she would've been surprised by her sensei's tone. However, she didn't even flinch. She activated her Byakugan and started surveying the zone.

It seems there is a manor not far from here. It is heavily guarded. Two men with a strong chakra are guarding one room. There is an old man sleeping there. I guess that's Gato – Hinata was explaining when she was interrupted by Tenzo – Gato is not a concern for now, Hinata. Focus on the factory, what's the safest route to get there – Hinata nodded and continued surveying. After a few minutes she spoke again – There are nearly two hundred men, sensei. I don't think they can manipulate chakra. They seem like regular mercenaries. The north wing is the least guarded. Most patients are in the west wing, the ORs are in the east wing, and the south wing is connected to the harbor. That's where they pack and ship everything – Naruo was shaking out of anger.

When Hinata used her Byakugan to find the factory earlier that day, she discovered it was a clandestine hospital. Gato's henchmen were taking people there and extracting their organs. Hinata had exhausted her Byakugan during the day. She had kept track of everything inside the factory for as long as she could keep her Byakugan activated. They had been taking patients to the factory with the help of some doctors from the city's hospital. There, they'd extracted their organs. They would dispose of the bodies of those patients whose organs were extracted and then take back to the hospital those to whom only some of them were extracted. Hinata had been trying to find a pattern. It looked like they took the patients with no visitors. People nobody would claim or notice their absence in the hospital. Others came from the streets, homeless people, and others from the orphanage. Gato had people in the orphanage working for him as well. Tenzo couldn't help remembering his own situation when he heard this. He wasn't an orphan when he had been abducted, but he was a child. He wouldn't let this stand. Even if it meant getting Konoha in trouble, he couldn't let this continue. He would face the consequences of his decision later.

Listen to me carefully. This is not part of our mission. If things go south, there must not be evidence Konoha was involved in this – Naruto stood up and spoke loudly – why is that, sensei? Why can't Konoha be involved in rescuing innocent people? – Naruto didn't understand. There was something off here. Tenzo sighed and stood up – Look Naruto. You live in a world of fantasy. You have idealized what Konoha and being a shinobi means. We are not that different from Zabuza. Gato could've hired Konoha instead of him to kill Tazuna-san, and Konoha would've most likely accepted the job – Naruo burst in anger – What do you mean by that, sensei? Dad would never do something like that! Konoha would never do something like that! – Tenzo raised his voice – Enough, Naruto! Konoha, like any other shinobi nation, gets its money from the missions we take and carry on. Most of these missions involve assassination. We do not question the reasons behind the assassination or if the target is at fault. That's not our job. It is true that Konoha holds the highest moral ground among the five great nations. The Yondaime and Sandaime try not to get Konoha involved in dirty things. However, Konoha needs to subsist. They have no option but to take some questionable missions for Konoha and the Land of Fire to continue living. That means doing business with a scumbag like Gato – the genins were shocked. Hinata spoke stuttering this time – Does that mean Konoha has a commercial relationship with Gato? – Tenzo nodded – Gato has this business hidden. Before the eyes of the world, he is a successful businessman. He provides medical supplies to most hidden villages. Going against him openly and failing could get Konoha in trouble. The other businessmen would take it as an insult and a threat. They would stop doing business with Konoha. What do you think would happen if Konoha could not buy weapons, supplies, etc? If we continue this, it will mean not only shutting down this factory and defeating Zabuza. We would need to kill Gato and leave no trace of Konoha. I will not force you to do something like this but if you choose to continue, you need to take off your headband – as he said this, Tenzo performed a series of hand seals. His clothes changed into a completely black suit. Naruto was the first one to take his headband off. Tenzo performed the same hand seals, and his three students were now in similar outfits as him – Cover your faces and do not take them off under any circumstances – they nodded.

I will deal with the mercenaries and be the distraction. Your job is to rescue all the people in there. You have permission to kill if someone gets in your way – Hinata and Naruto shivered before this declaration. They had never thought about the fact they would kill someone. In their minds, defeating the enemy meant leaving him out of combat. Tenzo was determined to show them the reality of the Shinobi world. The sooner, the better – Hinata, is any ongoing surgery right now? – Hinata nodded – There are three in the east wing, sensei – said Hinata. To Sasuke's and Naruto's surprise, Hinata kept her nerves at bay. She looked determined to continue their mission without any sign of hesitation – Understood. You leave the east wing for the last. Do not get near it. We need to be extremely careful near the ORs. We may cause the patients to die on the operating table. We're here to save them, not kill them – the three young shinobi nodded – Wait here. Do not go in until I give you the signal. Is that clear? – said Tenzo, looking at Naruto and Sasuke with his scary face. They nodded. Next, their sensei vanished in front of them in a cloud of smoke.

Tenzo appeared in front of the north wing's entrance. He pulled an explosive kunai from his pouch and threw it at the gate. The huge steel gate was blown away after the explosion. He stayed there, waiting for the guards to come. A group of men showed up, and when they saw a single man standing, they laughed – You came here to die, you fool! – said one of the men as he pointed at Tenzo with his sword. Tenzo pulled his sword and charged at them. They were well-versed in the sword. However, he was far better. He advanced through the group of mercenaries with ease. He needed to finish this group before reinforcement arrived. He had not shown compassion to any of them. He didn't aim to hurt or hinder. He killed them all. He created a clone that stayed behind as the original moved forward to drag the mercenaries' attention to the south wing. The clone then exited through the main gate and threw a sparkler. Shortly after that, the three genins arrived at his location – You know what to do. The real me is taking the battle to the harbor, and I'll head to the east wing to secure the ORs. Hinata, keep track of the mercenaries' movement. Can you spot the tunnel I made with my doton? – Tenzo had excavated a tunnel with his doton to evacuate the people from the facilities. He hid the entrance so that only Hinata's Byakugan could find it. Hinata nodded. He and his student walked into the building. As they entered, they saw the pile of corpses their sensei left on his way. They were all shocked by the amount of blood on the floor. They were walking through a hall that led to the center of the building when they heard some noises. Hinata and her teammates turned to see four men were still alive. It hadn't been an accident. Tenzo did it on purpose. His clone turned too – Hmph, it seems I was slightly clumsy – He took his sword and got closer to one of the men on the floor who was groaning in pain, and then he pierced the man's chest without any hesitation. Hinata gasped – There are three more. You guys, kill them. We can't leave any witness – commanded Tenzo. Naruto looked at him, defying his order. He didn't want to take a life that way. Those men were defenseless. They would die of bleeding. He never thought Tenzo-niisan could be so cruel. Tenzo got closer to Naruto – What are you three waiting for? – asked Tenzo. Sasuke looked at his friends, then at his sensei. He pulled Itachi's sword, approached one of the men lying on the floor, and did as his sensei. The man's groans stopped immediately. Naruto and Hinata shivered. Only their eyes were visible since they were fully covered, but Tenzo knew Hinata was trying hard not to cry while Naruto was infuriated. Hinata took deep breaths. She had medical training and knew these men had no chance of living. Killing them was more merciful than letting them suffer by their wounds. She activated her Byakugan and hit the man's heart twice with her gentle fist. Hinata shed some tears as she took the man's life. This is not what Tenzo had expected. He thought it would be Hinata the last one to do it. Naruto and Sasuke were more surprised about it. Sasuke approached Naruto and placed his hand on his shoulder – C'mon, Naruto. You have to do it. That man is in agony. Think about it this way: you are saving him from his pain. Sooner or later, we would've had to take someone's life. These men are scumbag. You're doing the world a favor by killing him – Sasuke's words felt like cold water. Naruto closed his eyes and pondered it for a while. He got closer to the last man alive. Unlike his sensei or Sasuke, he didn't have a sword. He pulled one of his kunai and kneeled beside the man to pierce his heart. The man looked at him – Please, boy, don't kill me! I don't wanna die! Please, … – said the man with a weak voice. Naruto's hand started to shake, and then, as if his hand was moving by its own will, he pierced the man's heart. As the man gave his dying breath, he tried to say something, but he was choking with his own blood. A moment later, he was gone.

I'm sorry, Naruto. But you guys must learn how cruel this world can be – thought Tenzo as he looked at Naruto pulling his kunai from that man's chest. Naruto held his blooded kunai and stared at it until Tenzo broke the silence – Excellent guys. Now, let's continue with our plan. Stay safe and protect each other. Take this, Sasuke. If you guys find yourselves in danger, channel your chakra through it, and it will help you – said Tenzo as he handed what looked like an oak acorn to Sasuke. Sasuke didn't understand how a simple acorn could be helpful, but he saved it in his pouch anyway – Sasuke, you're in charge of the team in my absence – said Tenzo's clone finally as he left to secure the east wing. Sasuke smiled proudly. He had been left in charge. That meant his sensei acknowledged him. Naruto, on the other hand, felt disgusted and disappointed with Tenzo-niisan. Despite having their faces covered by the masks, Sasuke could feel Naruto's contempt.

– C'mon, Naruto. We've got a mission to complete – said Sasuke trying to divert Naruto's attention from the corpse. Naruto took one last look to the man he'd just killed, then turned around to join Sasuke and Hinata. She tried to say something to comfort Naruto, but she didn't find the right words. Sasuke and Naruto nodded at each other and left to rescue the kidnapped people.

As they got closer to the west wing, they could hear how the noise of their sensei's battle was getting lower. Tenzo had done a good job taking the attention of the mercenaries to the south wing. However, as Tenzo had expected, some mercenaries had stayed behind to guard their prisoners. They stopped before arriving at the west wing – Hinata, how many guards are there? – Hinata activated her byakugan. After inspecting the area, she informed her teammates about the situation – There are eight of them. Many of the prisoners are in critical condition. They'll die if we don't get attention soon! There is no time to waste! Let's go! – said Naruto – Wait, Naruto! We need a plan – Sasuke remained calmed. Naruto knew sensei had chosen him because he was the best at controlling his emotions.

Zabuza's hideout.

Haku was standing outside their hideout. Zabuza had assured him that not even the girl with the byakugan would be able to find them, and there was no need to take guard. Spending time in Mei's division, he learned from Ao how to keep a place hidden even from the mighty byakugan. Haku was lost in his thoughts, remembering the time he met Zabuza. Zabuza found him in the streets of a small town on one of the snowy islands from the Land of Water. He had become an orphan a few weeks before after his father had murdered his mother. When his father tried to kill him, too, he used his ice released out of instinct and killed him. He had to run away from his town, unable to bury his mother, escaping from the villagers' hatred. He arrived in another city and lived as a homeless kid, stealing food from the markets and eating from the garbage. Until, one day, when some locals were beating him up, he showed up. Zabuza appeared and stopped the men. They demanded he take Haku prisoner for stealing. However, he killed them instead. Zabuza said back then he rescued him because he had heard about him, the boy of the ice release. Zabuza offered to train him and take him under his wing. Zabuza didn't look at him like the others. No spark of hate or contempt could be seen in his eyes. He even thought sometimes Zabuza looked at him with fondness. Knowing how cold and distant Zabuza really was, Haku had convinced himself that it was just his imagination looking for a fatherly figure.

In the time he spent with Zabuza while they were still shinobis of Kirigakure, he discovered that the ice release was a kekkei genkai of the Yuki clan, the clan of the Sandaime Mizukage. Haku never understood why Zabuza, who hated the Sandaime and Yondaime Mizukage more than anyone else, would take a boy with the same ability as the Sandaime as his apprentice. Even one of Zabuza's former comrades, Hoshikage Kisame, the wielder of Samehada, had said once his relationship with Zabuza was an irony of destiny. Haku's thoughts were disturbed when he heard an explosion and a cloud of smoke coming from the factory's direction. Haku informed Zabuza about this.

Hmph, looks like those Konoha dogs aren't as useless as we thought – commented Zabuza as he sat at his bed's edge. He hadn't fully recovered, but he could move now – How are you so sure it was Konoha's shinobis? – asked Haku. Zabuza gave a sarcastic chuckle – This country is full of cowards. They all suspected what was going on in that place and decided to ignore it – Zabuza rescued Nanigashi from the city's hospital because he knew Gato would take her since she was a Jane Doe – This place truly repulses me. You can smell the cowardness in the air – said Zabuza as he stood up and walked outside to view the destruction of Gato's clandestine hospital. He stumbled a little bit and refused to get help from Haku. Haku and Zabuza stood side by side, looking at the increasing cloud of smoke beyond the mangroves – Gato will mobilize all his men to the factory – Haku pointed out, and Zabuza nodded – Do you think Konoha stands a chance? Gato's henchmen might not be trained shinobi, but there are way too many against four of them – Zabuza stayed silent. Memories from his childhood flooded his mind.

Zabuza became an orphan at a young age when his parents, both shinobis, died in combat. He lived at Kirikaure's orphanage for a little over a year. He escaped when the head of the orphanage took him and other children and woke up in a boat. The director of the orphanage told them they were going to be sold to become slaves and guinea pigs. With the help of another orphan, Taki, he managed to free himself from his bindings. He and Taki jumped into the sea. They felt sorry for the children they left behind, but it was either stay and die or leave and live. They'd had no choice. Ever since, Taki had become like a sister to Zabuza. He wanted to protect her. He needed to become stronger, so he tried to get into the Shinobi Academy. However, he was denied permission to sign in. He and Taki lived in the streets. Zabuza proved to have a talent for fighting. One year after living on the streets and discovering the graduation examination the children had to go through in the academy, Zabuza decided to put an end to that. He sneaked into the academy on the day of the examination and got into the pit when the students were being presented. The Sandaime and soon-to-be Yondaime were present. The examination was supposed to be one-to-one combats to death, i.e., half the students will die, and the other half will graduate. However, Zabuza started attacking the students as soon as he sneaked into the pit. The examinators were not allowed to intervene by the Mizukage's command. In the end, all the students died at the hands of a stray boy with no proper training. The Mizukage was impressed and upset. The examination was meant to dispose of the weak half of the students, not all of them. He had just lost 50 future shinobis. However, he was pleased to find such a cold-blooded and natural assassin. Fearing this would happen again, the Mizukage was forced to ban the graduation exam. Zabuza had accomplished his goal. From the beginning, he knew that to save more lives, he needed to take some of them. Everything came at a cost, and he was willing to pay for it.

Zabuza had always wondered what kind of horrendous end the children he left in the boat had. Had they finished in the hands of someone like Gato? Were they still alive? Moments like this cause tremors in his mind. He couldn't help but think about Taki, Hyori and the pain he had caused them both. Memories were cast away when Haku's voice took him back.

You need to rest, Zabuza-san. Go back to bed – said Haku, trying to reason with his oddly absent master. Zabuza stared at him. His gaze was more severe than usual – Go and make sure that clandestine hospital is shut down permanently – Haku was aghast – But Zabuza-san, I thought you said we couldn't go against Gato or this so-called Meio would haunt us down – said Haku, dumbfounded. Not only because of the change of heart of Zabuza giving a direct strike against Gato but also because this implied helping Konoha shinobis – what do you mean, Haku? We are not doing anything; Konoha is. Make sure no one notices it's you. Don't use your ice release, and we should be fine. I'm sure they are doing this attack incognito, too. Konoha wouldn't risk being associated with an attack on a well-respected businessman – Zabuza wondered what motivated them to act against Gato this boldly. In any case, they had earned his respect. He will give them an honorable death when the time comes. Haku decided not to question his master and vanished. Zabuza stayed there, still looking at the cloud of smoke and letting himself be taken by his memories. As he gazed upon the horizon, he muttered – stay safe, son – as a tear dropped from his eyes.

North wing of the factory

Tenzo and his students were evacuating Gato's prisoners. Tenzo had created barrows with his mokuton to carry those who couldn't walk. The tunnel Tenzo had dug would take them to the mangroves close to Tazuna's house. There, Hinata could treat the ones that needed urgent treatment. They had already defeated all the mercenaries in the factory. Tenzo was tired; he had handled most of them alone. Even though they were not shinobis, they were well-versed in sword art. It would've been easier if he had been able to use his jutsus. However, he knew that to ensure no accidental witness could link them to Konoha, they couldn't use jutsus. They were almost done evacuating all the people when – Sensei! They're almost here! – said Hinata, who was tracking the mercenaries from Gato's manor who had been mobilized towards them – ohh, C'mon! Sensei! Let us use ninjutsu to fight them – said Sasuke, to Tenzo's surprise. Tenzo chuckled – These are the last ones. You three leave now and help them get through safely. I'll stay here – said Tenzo. Still upset with his sensei, Naruto turned around to look at him, shocked – You have to be kidding me! We won't leave you behind! They're too many! – said Naruto, breathing heavily – The knucklehead is right, sensei. You need us if you're determined to fight without ninjutsu – Sasuke was gasping. They could all listen to the turmoil of Gato's men getting closer – This is not open to discussion! I gave you an order, and you'll comply! You need to … – Tenzo was interrupted by Hinata – Sensei! The man of the ice release is also getting closer from the east! – Tenzo groaned. This was bad. His cover would be blown out if he had to fight that man. There was no way he could fight him without ninjutsu. It was a relief that at least the two samurais stayed behind to protect Gato. He knew so little about samurais in general. He couldn't tell if Gato's samurais were strong since they didn't use chakra as they did – You have no option now, sensei! We're staying! – Tenzo didn't argue back. He limited himself to smiling and getting ready for battle. Hinata approached the tunnel entrance and spoke with the last people entering it. They were a group of five in good health and hadn't been operated on yet. Once free, they had been helping them get the rest of the prisoners to the tunnels – Follow the tunnel; it is a 40-minute walk in your condition. You'll exit in the middle of the mangroves. Wait for us there; if we don't get there by sunrise, look for Tazuna-san – The three men and two women nodded – Thank you for everything! We'll look after them and make sure everyone stays safe until your return! – said one of the women. Tenzo performed a series of hand seals and sealed the tunnel with his doton – Hinata; how long until they arrive? – asked Tenzo – Gato's henchmen will be here in less than two minutes. The ice release man will be here in 10 min – Tenzo sighed – Do not hold back. You can use all your arsenal; just don't leave anyone alive! – said Tenzo as he took a fighting stance. Sasuke, Naruto and Hinata did the same. Naruto still didn't like the idea of taking lives, but at this point, his hands were already covered in blood.

When the mercenaries arrived at the site, they were shocked to see the facilities on fire, and four figures stood before them. Whispers started among them – Where is the battalion that did this? Only these four caused all of this? Who the hell are they? – Confusion was spreading among them as a plague. – Hinata, stay behind and make sure none of them escape. Do you understand? – Hinata nodded. Tenzo took advantage of the confusion among the mercenaries. He performed a series of hand seals – Doton: Doryuso! – Long, pointy, and sharp earth spears formed from the ground where the mercenaries stood. One after another, mercenaries were impaled by the spears. One single shot took plenty of them. Tenzo could've created more spears but didn't want to waste his chakra against them. He knew the man of the ice release was getting closer. He just wanted to intimidate the mercenaries so they would lower their guards. Using suiton techniques would've been better since they were next to the harbor and there was plenty of water. This could help him save the chakra. However, it would give the Ice Release man an advantage as well. Doton was the right choice – These are shinobis! We stand no chance! – yelled one of them – We have no option! We surpass them 50 to 1! Let's go! – said one of them. However, his voice didn't transmit any confidence. They all charged at Tenzo and his students, swords in hands.

Sasuke was fighting the mercenaries with his sword. He had been trying to infuse his raiton in the sword, unsuccessfully so far. He had convinced himself that he needed to perfect his mastery of the sword until he could use the raiton properly. Naruto, on the other hand, was mainly fist-fighting the opponents. Naruto pulled a kunai from his pouch with a tag attached to it. It wasn't an explosive kunai, though. He didn't aim the kunai to someone. He threw it to the ground in the middle of a group of mercenaries. Once the kunai hit the ground, the seal on the tag was activated. Seals formed on the ground around the kunai. Every mercenary touched by the seal that spread by the kunai was immobilized. They were shocked when they realized that they couldn't move. Naruto had been improving his immobilization seals to make them work without him touching the target. Tenzo had praised him for thinking about the kunai solution during his training. Unfortunately, it took a lot of time to produce these seal tags. He only had a few available so far. He will ask Ero-sennin for help to find a way to make them faster the next time he sees him. Once the target was immobilized, Naruto and Sasuke threw kunais at them to kill them. Naruto felt guilty, but he concluded that he had no other choice. Hinata haunted those trying to flee when they saw Tenzo's technique. She still hadn't been able to use the sixty-four palms trigram. However, with the knowledge of the chakra points, she figured she didn't need to block the sixty-four tanketsus to kill someone. She just needed to stop the chakra flow to the heart; to do so, she only needed to block two tanketsus. Unknown to Hinata, she figured out the gentle needle strike herself. The sixty-four trigram technique is meant to hinder the opponent, not to kill. However, the Hyugas have the ability to kill with one single strike to the heart by closing the eighth internal gate, the gate of death. This was a technique only transmitted to the main family. Now that Hiashi had abolished the division of his clan, the technique was taught only to elite members of the clan, such as Mukai, Tenzo's teammate. Tenzo was proud to see Hinata discovering the technique on her own merits. Hinata could still not close the inner gate with one strike, though.

Tenzo, Naruto and Sasuke were fighting when they heard Hinata's voice – Sensei! He's here! – Tenzo and the others knew who she was talking about. However, they were surprised when they saw the man who arrived. He wasn't wearing the same clothes the first time they met him, nor the mask or headband. He was wearing similar clothes to theirs. He was in a completely black suit that covered his entire body. Tenzo jumped to leave the battlefield and stood in front of Haku. He held his sword, ready to fight him. However, unexpectedly, for Tenzo and his students, the man jumped and started killing the mercenaries as well. He was using long senbons. Sasuke was shocked by the man's speed, but they had no time to stop, or they'd be killed. Naruto, Sasuke and Hinata continued fighting. Tenzo pondered the situation for a few seconds. He decided not to bother asking and got back to the battlefield. With the help of the ice release man, Tenzo and the others killed every mercenary. Once only the five of them were left, Tenzo jumped and landed in front of him – Why did you help us? – demanded Tenzo. The man didn't respond. He started walking and passed him by. Tenzo blocked his way again – I asked you a question! – demanded again – I owe you no explanation. I just follow Zabuza's-san orders. You made a mess, though. Shinobi involvement is evident on this battlefield because of the four of you. You need to erase all evidence of ninjutsu – said the man as he resumed his walk. He was ready to leave when he turned around and said some last words – This changes nothing, Mokuton shinobi. We're still coming after the bridge builder and you four! – he then vanished with a shunshin no jutsu. Tenzo and the rest were puzzled. Naruto was the first to speak, as usual – Oi, sensei! I don't get it. Why did he help us destroy his boss's factory, and then he says casually he is still gonna kill us? Huh? I don't get it! – Naruto was rubbing his head – I don't get it either, Naruto – Tenzo was not telling the truth entirely. The man said he was following Zabuza's orders. Zabuza had a moral compass, after all. He wondered what could've happened to Zabuza that made him act against his employer this way. He would bet his year's salary that this clandestine hospital touched a nerve to trigger this reaction from Zabuza. It also proved he still hasn't fully recovered from his chakra drain. It was obvious that they didn't want to be linked to this event. That man never used a single jutsu. Gato would never suspect Zabuza and his comrade for this event, and he needed to make sure Konoha could not be linked to it. Not with proof, at least.

Tenzo and the others did as Haku recommended and cleaned any evidence of ninjutsu. Tenzo's doton came in handy for this. After that, they joined the people they saved. They needed to find a place for them and treat them. Takin them back to the city's hospital wasn't safe. Tazuna-san will be upset.

NOTES:

The side story with Inari will be omitted. It happens similarly to the canon so I will not take time going through that.

According to the manga, Gato's bodyguards are samurais. However, in the canon they were portrayed as very pathetic. I'm not making them jounin level, but they'll have a little bit more relevance in the final battle against Gato.

The side story of the factory is just a medium to get deeper in Zabuza and Tenzo's background in this universe.

The "gentle needle fist" would be the way Hiashi killed the kumo-nin when he tried to kidnap Hinata. Hiashi killed the man with just one blow; that's what I'm referring to in this technique.
