Chapter 14: Winds of War
Zabuza's Hideout
Tenzo kneeled next to Nono's bed and held her wrist – Her pulse is weak. We need to take her to Tsunade-sama – Tenzo said as he gave a worried look to his sensei – I don't suppose you have a Kashi Jotai (suspended animation) seal with you, do you? – Jiraiya denied with his head. Tenzo sighed – I guess I'll carry her back to the shelter. Mukai can seal her until we return to Konoha – Tenzo said as he pulled a storing scroll from his pouch and sealed Nono's Kiri uniform. He then proceeded to take Nono in his arms. He noticed Jiraiya's concerned look. Something was bothering his sensei – What is it, sensei? – Jiraiya looked at Nono for a while before answering – I'm just worried about Tsunade – Jiraiya looked sad – What do you mean, sensei? Tsunade-sama will be overjoyed! – Jiraiya got closer to look at Nono – You forget that Tsunade must tell Nono we failed in rescuing her son. That's gonna break them both – Tenzo knew his sensei was right. Tsunade confirmed Kabuto's death when she assisted the Chunin exams hosted in Iwagakure. It affected her greatly. She pledged to look after the orphans Nono cared so much ever since. She had taken the responsibility of overseeing the orphanage after that, along with her responsibilities as head of the hospital – There is no point in worrying about that now, Tenzo. Let's go – Jiraiya said, and both shinobis left to join their teams.
Shelter built by Tenzo
Jiraiya and Tenzo arrived at the shelter Tenzo had built. Still wearing his ANBU cloak and mask, Itachi stood atop the shelter, guarding it from enemies. Jiraiya gave a proud smile to Tenzo when he saw all the people Tenzo and his team had saved from Gato – You did well, kiddo – Tenzo smiled back at him. Tenzo entered first, with Nono in his arms. Tenzo was shocked to see Hinata on a bed, still unconscious. Mukai was treating her. Naruto, Sasuke, Tazuna, Tsunami, Inari and many more people stood close by, looking expectantly at Mukai. Tenzo rushed toward him – Are you out of your mind? She is in no condition to be healed here! You should've waited until we were back in Konoha! – Mukai looked up to meet Tenzo's gaze. He was enraged – Easy, Tenzo. I would never put Hinata's life in danger. She's tougher than you give her credit for – Mukai spoke calmly. His hands continued glowing in a greenish-blue chakra. Mukai pointed to Naruto and Sasuke with his eyes – Those two explained her wounds and condition to me in more detail. Trust me, I can handle it – This is reckless, Mukai! You had no right. You should've waited for me – Tenzo was interrupted when he felt Jiraiya's hand on his shoulder – Relax, Tenzo. You know Mukai is a top-notch medical shinobi. He saved your life many times. You shouldn't doubt him when he says he can handle it – Tenzo knew his sensei was right. He felt ashamed – I'm sorry, Mukai. It is just that … – Mukai chuckled – Hey, I get it! These genins are your responsibility, and you care deeply for them – Mukai continued healing Hinata. About 15 minutes later, Hinata woke up abruptly – Hinata! – the whole multitude said at once. They cheered up. The girl had defended them from the Samurais and risked her life for them. Naruto and Sasuke fell to the ground, relieved. It was as if the weight of the world had been lifted from their shoulders. They looked at each other and laughed nervously. They didn't understand why they laughed. It surely was a crazy thing to do after all they'd been through. But they were filled with joy now that Hinata was awake – What happened? Naruto-kun, Sasuke-kun? Are they alright? – Hinata was confused. She didn't realize where she was. She barely noticed Mukai standing beside her, let alone the legendary sannin standing behind her sensei, who carried a woman – Calm down, Hinata-sama. They're both okay. See? – said Mukai as he pointed at the boys laughing on the floor. Hinata smiled – Here, Hinata-sama. Take this pill – said Mukai as he handed a red pill to Hinata – a blood pill? – the young girl asked. Mukai nodded – This will help your body generate the blood you lost faster – Hinata nodded and took the pill.
Naruto and Sasuke stood up and got closer to Hinata. Mukai stood up and walked toward Tenzo – Who's this lady? – asked Mukai. Tenzo was so engrossed in Hinata's condition that he had forgotten about Nono – I'll explain later. You must seal her with one of your Kashi Jotai Seals – Tenzo urged. Mukai unbuttoned his cloak to take a seal tag from his vest. He funneled his chakra through it and placed it on Nono's chest. The seal activated, and a moment later, Nono's body disappeared into a cloud of smoke. Tenzo caught the tag seal after Nono was sealed. He handed it over to Jiraiya, who saved it in his vest. Jiraiya then approached Hinata's bed. Before he could say anything, he was pushed by a little boy who jumped to hug Hinata – I feared you died! I'm sorry, Hinata! If it weren't for me, Gatos's samurais would've never found this place – said Inari, crying. Hinata rubbed Inari's head. Sasuke and Naruto looked at each other. They hadn't had time to catch up in the middle of the fight, and Tenzo-sensei left with Jiraiya before discussing what had happened – You mean you fought some Samurais before joining us? – asked Naruto. Inari raised his head, cleansed his tears and held his fist up – She was awesome! She saved us all! – said Inari. Hinata blushed – Tenzo-sensei helped me, Inari-kun – Mukai turned to see Tenzo; he smiled – You're being modest, Hinata. My clone just assisted you. You did most of the hard work – You are amazing, Hinata! – said Naruto loudly – On that, we can agree on, knucklehead! – said Sasuke – You saved us, too – said Naruto and Sasuke. Hinata blushed even harder. Jiraiya stepped in – well, well, we all can agree that Hinata-chan is awesome, and that goes to you two as well, Naruto and Sasuke. Tenzo told me everything. You three did great – Naruto blushed a little and started smiling broadly. Sasuke smirked. Being praised by one of the legendary sannins felt good – I'm sure your clan will be thrilled by your Sharingan, Sasuke – continued the toad sennin. Hinata looked surprised – Sasuke-kun, did you wake your Sharingan? – Sasuke smiled at her – Yeah, it was thanks to you, Hinata – Hinata blushed – Naruto also got some kind of new power. It was – Sasuke stopped. He didn't know what to think about Naruto's new power. He had lost control at the beginning. He noticed Naruto's expression changed. He seemed ashamed – Naruto defeated Haku. You should've seen him, Hinata – said Sasuke, praising Naruto and trying to cheer his friend up. Naruto forced a smile. Jiraiya placed his hand on Naruto's head. He looked up to meet his godfather's eyes. Jiraiya leaned to face Naruto – No worries, kid. You'll learn to control it. I have no doubt about it – said Jiraiya as he rubbed his godson's hair and gave him a wide smile. Naruto smiled, too. Jiraiya truly believed in Naruto, yet he worried for the boy. Things could've gone so wrong. He was impressed that Naruto had managed to suppress the feral instinct of the Kyubi's chakra by sheer will. He cast the thought away – You three need some rest. We'll stay here until you recover your strength to travel. We also need to inspect Gato's mansion for proof of what he was doing here – said the toad sennin.
Jiraiya, Mukai and Tenzo were about to leave the shelter – Wait! Jiraiya-sama! – Sasuke called. Jiraiya and his disciples turned – The men who took Haku. One of them was your former teammate, the Snake Sannin, Orochimaru – Jiraiya frowned. He had hoped they wouldn't bring that up, that they'd be so immersed in Hinata that they would let it go – what about him? – the toad sennin asked. Naruto and Sasuke exchanged looks. Hinata had no idea what they were talking about – He wore the same cloak as the shark man and the plant guy. The shark man is from Kirigakure – Jiraiya interrupted – You're pointing out the obvious, kid. Where are you trying to get? – Sasuke and Naruto gulped. Jiraiya's behavior had changed dramatically – We want to know who they are! Why are such dangerous shinobis working together? And also … – Naruto interrupted Sasuke and continued – why is Orochimaru interested in us? He said he wanted our bloodlines. What does he mean? – Naruto looked at Tenzo-sensei – He also called sensei his guinea pig – Jiraiya burst his chakra. The genins and all the villagers trembled with his chakra – do not press your luck, kiddos. You're stepping on delicate matters – Naruto and Sasuke gulped – It's alright, sensei – said Tenzo – I would've preferred to wait longer before telling them, but they have the right to know – Jiraiya looked at Tenzo. He eased his chakra. It had taken Tenzo about a year to open up about his trauma with Itachi and Mukai – are you sure? – Tenzo nodded. Mukai patted his back. Tenzo walked towards his students. There was gloom on his face. Everyone in the shelter stared at them, puzzled – These are matters that cannot be discussed so openly – said Tenzo as he leaned forward – Is it okay if I carry you, Hinata? – Tenzo asked his student – Hai, sensei – Tenzo took Hinata in his arms – Follow me – said Tenzo as he walked out of the shelter. Sasuke, Naruto, Jiraiya and Mukai followed. Once outside, Jiraiya called Itachi, and he joined them. They got just far enough from the shelter and into the mangroves not to be seen by the curious and still be able to guard the shelter.
Tenzo placed Hinata carefully on a bench created with his Mokuton. Tenzo approached his sensei – Let's begin with your first question, Sasuke – said the Sannin – The Kiri-nin who accompanied Orochimaru is Kisame Hoshigaki, one of the Legendary Swordsmen of the Mist, like Zabuza. As for the plant guy, I'm as clueless as you are. I had never seen or heard of him – Naruto interrupted – but who are they? Why did they all wear the same cloaks? – Jiraiya rubbed his forehead – Well, it seems that they're part of a criminal organization. I've been tracking down Orochimaru since he left the village. He's always doing business with many of these organizations. However, I hadn't heard of an organization wearing black cloaks with red clouds, let alone that Orochimaru WAS A MEMBER of it – Jiraiya gritted his teeth – now, why Orochimaru is after you is kind of evident. Uzumaki, Uchiha and Hyuga are some of history's oldest and most prestigious clans. Byakugan and Sharingan are coveted all over the shinobi world. The Uzumaki clan possesses several unique techniques and physical strength, not to mention a predilect proficiency with Fuinjutsu. They were feared to the point two of the great nations joined to destroy them – Sasuke stared at Naruto. Was the power he showed during the battle against Haku, a technique of his mother's clan? He wondered. Naruto remembered that his sensei had said that Ero-sennin had been in the battle for Uzushiogakure. He needed to know more – Orochimaru has always longed to become the strongest shinobi and master all jutsus. However, some jutsus cannot be learned or mastered – Sasuke interrupted Jiraiya – Kekkei Genkais – Jiraiya nodded – Kekkei Genkais are transmitted by bloodline. However, some of them can be stolen – Hinata interrupted this time – You mean, take our eyes to obtain our dojutsu – Jiraiya nodded again. Naruto seemed engrossed in his thoughts – But stealing our eyes is impossible, Jiraiya-sama. We have a … - Hinata was interrupted by Sasuke – Hinata! You can't speak about the seal! – Hinata stuttered and started sweating. Mukai burst out laughing. Sasuke frowned – What's so funny? – before Mukai could say something, Itachi spoke – It was Jiraiya-sensei and the Yondaime Hokage-sama who invented the seal that protects the Byakugan and Sharingan – Hinata and Sasuke were shocked. Naruto, on the other hand, was still engrossed in his thoughts. This didn't skip Jiraiya's attention – I don't think Orochimaru is aware of the seal that protects your dojutsu, though. As for you, Naruto – Naruto immediately looked up to see his godfather – Your physical strength is something Orochimaru desires. You may not have realized it, but a regular shinobi would've died or had severe trauma after being frozen for so long as you did. You heal faster than most people, and Uzumaki's tend to have impressive longevity – Naruto interrupted – But Ero-sennin, all of this is because – Jiraiya interrupted him before he mentioned Kurama – I know what you're thinking Naruto. But you're wrong. THAT might be acting as a booster of your already superior abilities. I met many members of the Uzumaki clan. Trust me, boy. That's mainly you and not what you're thinking. Besides, you're still young. You might wake one of the other abilities of your mother's clan – Naruto's mood improved – What kind of abilities the Uzumaki clan has, Ero-sennin? – Jiraiya's forehead vein started pulsing – STOP CALLING ME THAT, YOU LITTLE BRAT! – Jiraiya hit Naruto's head. Hinata giggled – The legendary Sannin, so not dignified – thought Sasuke.
NOTE: It was stated in previous chapters by Gato that the Akatsuki is a new organization on the rise. In the canon, Jiraiya was well aware of Akatsuki and Orochimaru. However, in this fanfic, Minato is alive, which means Obito knows Minato and Konoha are aware of his existence. This forced Obito to stay hidden and be more cautious. This is why Jiraiya had never heard of Akatsuki until now.
After a small brawl between Godfather and godson, the Toad Sannin spoke again. He gave Naruto an accusing look, and Naruto just looked away, ignoring his godfather's gaze – As I was saying, your mother is better suited to tell you about your clan's techniques – Sasuke cleared his throat – Jiraiya-sama, what good would it be for Orochimaru to capture us if he can't take our abilities? – Jiraiya crossed his arms – As I told you before, I doubt Orochimaru knows he can't take the Sharingan or Byakugan, at least not in a traditional approach – This caught Mukai's and Itachi's attention – What do you mean, sensei? – asked Mukai – Years ago, another shinobi in Konoha, Hiruko Shigaraki, was developing a kinjutsu, the Chimera Jutsu. That would allow someone to steal a kekkei genkai and assimilate all its abilities. Sarutobi-sensei ordered Tsunade, Orochimaru and me to kill him when we found out about his experiments. He, somehow, eluded us. Orochimaru was supposed to destroy Hiruko's labs – Itachi spoke this time – So, you think he stole Hiruko's research – Jiraiya looked at his student – That's a possibility, or they worked together all along, and Orochimaru either helped him escape or killed him. If Orochimaru managed to complete that Chimera Jutsu, he could assimilate the Sharingan, Byakugan or any other kekkei genkai, despite the protection seal – Genins and ANBUs were shocked alike – The protection seal prevents the eyes from being taken. The Chimera Jutsu does not take the eyes; it assimilates them – Jiraiya looked at the genins – You don't need to worry about this. That's a problem for me and the council. Orochimaru is not something you can deal with. But enough of this. Tenzo, are you sure you want to do this? – Jiraiya stood in front of his student. Tenzo nodded.
NOTE: It seemed to me that Hiruko's Chimera Jutsu (The Will of Fire movie) resembles Orochimaru's possession jutsu. The difference relies on Orochimaru possessing a new body and obtaining the abilities of the new host, whereas Hiruko's jutsu "drains" the abilities from the victim's body, and he assimilates them. Hiruko and Orochimaru's collaboration will prove important further in the story. Also, in chapter 6, I introduced a new character, Kaede Shigaraki, a girl Hiruko experimented on. She'll play a role at some point in the story development, but I can't spoil anything yet. Shigaraki is the clan of a ROOT member from Boruto; he created a summoning, a chimera called Nue. I basically joined both characters and will make some adjustments to my story.
Tenzo took a deep breath. Talking about his past was unsettling. Tenzo lifted his right hand and formed a wood branch out of his palm – Do you remember what I told you about my kekkei genkai on our first day as Team Seven? – Tenzo asked, not looking at his students. His gaze was fixed on his branch. The three genin looked at their sensei – You said you're not a real Senju, yet you use Mokuton – Sasuke pointed out – Indeed, I do – said Tenzo as he made the branch return to his palm and disappeared. He closed his fist and tightened his grip – Mokuton was the ability only the Shodaime Hokage possessed. Mokuton's most feared ability is taming Bijus – the three genin were aghast – Orochimaru wanted the Mokuton for himself. However, it is a dangerous ability to play with. He wouldn't risk experimenting with it in his own body. He kidnapped and experimented on sixty children. He kidnapped them and implanted cells of the Shodaime in them. The power of Hashirama-sama is beyond comprehension. All the children died, all except for one – Hinata gasped – You mean that Orochimaru experimented on you? – asked Hinata with a trembling voice. Tenzo nodded – I was kidnapped from a small village of the Land of Fire, not far from Konoha, along with my little sister, Yukimi – the three genins were taken aback. They tried to speak, but no words came out – Orochimaru killed my parents, and my sister died in Orochimaru's experiment – Hinata started crying. Enraged didn't describe how Naruto and Sasuke felt. They were angrily shaking – The Sandaime-sama discovered another of Orochimaru's operations. Forcing him to flee and abandon the village – Jiraiya frowned at the last statement. He regretted failing at stopping Orochimaru back then – I was found by the ROOT in one of Orochimaru's abandoned labs. They took me in and trained me to become an emotionless assassin for Konoha – Sasuke was shocked – I lost all my memories from my previous life. I was raised to be a killing machine. It wasn't until the Yondaime-sama saved me from the ROOT and Tsunade-sama took me in that I recovered my memories, thanks to Inoichi-san and Ibiki-san – Sasuke stuttered – You mean my father kidnapped you after Orochimaru left? – Sasuke couldn't believe his father could do something like that – Oh, no, not at all, Sasuke. That happened before Fugaku-sama took over the ROOT. Danzo-sama did it – Naruto spoke this time – Danzo who? – That's off-topic, Naruto – Jiraiya said firmly, leaving no opening for debate – After I got my memories back, I remembered the pain, the suffering, the torture of watching my little sister die slowly and painfully as her body rejected Hashirama's cells. I felt so powerless, not being able to do anything to ease her pain, to save her. I remembered my parents being slain as they tried to protect us from Orochimaru – Tenzo's gaze was still fixed on his hand – The nightmares of that time haunted me for too long. I thought I had overcome that, but when I listened to Orochimaru's voice, all the fear came back – Hinata was crying, and Naruto and Sasuke were bursting chakra unconsciously – My Mokuton is far from perfect. It cannot be compared to the Shodaime's. Konoha has kept it a secret. I was given the status of a member of the Senju clan when Tsunade-sama took me in. That's how I got my Mokuton and why Orochimaru called me his guinea pig – Naruto and Sasuke stood up. Hinata was still too weak to do the same, but she cleansed her tears and hardened her expression – We'll become stronger, sensei, and together we'll defeat Orochimaru! We'll make him pay for what he did! – Jiraiya and Tenzo smiled. Itachi and Mukai, too, but their faces were still hidden by their masks – I expected no less – said Jiraiya, giving a broad smile to the genins. Naruto was so enraged about Orochimaru's doing that he forgot to ask his godfather about Uzushiogakure.
NOTE: Yukimi is a character from the filler episodes. She confused Yamato with her brother, Tenzo. That's supposed to be the reason Kakashi calls Yamato Tenzo. However, that part is a filler, and Kakashi actually calls him Tenzo in the manga. That's why I used it as his real name and took Yukimi's story to blend it with Yamato's.
In Shippuden's filler, they show Kakashi trying to stop Orochimaru from leaving the village. However, in the manga, chapter 237, we see a memory of Jiraiya. It was Jiraiya, not Kakashi, who tried to stop Orochimaru from leaving the village. The flashback is shown again in manga 382 when Jiraiya is dying. It never made sense for the filler arc to show Kakashi trying to stop Orochimaru.
Great Bridge: two weeks later.
Team Seven and Team Nine (Team Jiraiya) stood at the docks beside the bridge. Hinata had fully recovered, and they were ready to leave. They had captured every man who supported Gato in his tyrannic rule over the Land of Waves. Three squads from Konoha had arrived at the Land of Waves a couple of days earlier. The Land of Waves had formally allied with Konoha, which meant that Konoha could deploy permanent units to guard the small country as it does with the villages across the Land of Fire. Since it was in the Daimyo's and the country's interest, the Court of Fire had agreed to send a huge workforce to support Tazuna and his crew in finishing the bridge sooner. There was a crowd at the docks, led by Tazuna and his family, wishing them a farewell – We're indebted to you. You brought peace to our small country and ignited the flame of courage that had been extinguished so long ago – said Tazuna as he rubbed his grandson's hair. The three genins were smiling. Jiraiya and the two ANBU were standing on the boat with Kashi, the man who brought Team Seven into the Land of Waves. They looked from the boat at the farewell. After a few minutes of saying goodbye, Tenzo spoke to the squads sent by the Hokage to guard the country – You better take good care of them – You can count on us, Tenzo-san – Team Seven left.
They had been traveling on the boat for a while when Naruto sat beside his godfather – Oi, Ero-sennin – Jiraiya looked at him. Naruto seemed gloomy – Sensei said you and Jiji were there when Uzushiogakure fell – the boat was small, and despite Naruto speaking in a low voice, he caught everyone's attention – I was – said Jiraiya plainly. He waited for Naruto to ask something, but the boy stayed silent – do you want to know what happened? – Naruto tightened his fists – I … I don't know, Ero-sennin. I thought I did, but I'm afraid – Naruto's voice was oddly shaky. After hearing what Tenzo-sensei had been through, he wasn't sure anymore if he was ready to listen to what had happened with his mother's homeland – I'm not sure if I'm prepared to handle it – Jiraiya rubbed his godson's hair – You're a wise little man, Naruto. You've seen in this mission how cruel the shinobi world can be. How we, shinobis, take lives so routinary that we might end up with a heart of stone. Your most impressive skill is your kindness, boy. I'll tell you everything if that's what you really want – Naruto looked at his godfather. They stared at each other's eyes for a while. Then, Naruto pulled a scroll from his wooden box. Jiraiya recognized it immediately. It was the gift he had sent to Naruto for his graduation – I haven't been able to open the scroll yet – said Naruto as he looked at it. He tightened his grip around it – Do you promise to tell me everything when I manage to open it? – Jiraiya smiled at the blond boy – I promise, kiddo. Once you see what's inside, you'll understand so much more, and then, I'm sure you'll be ready to know the whole truth about your mom's clan – Jiraiya smiled at his godson proudly. The rest of their trip to Konoha went smoothly, with the Sannin telling stories about his missions.
Konoha: Council chambers
Team Seven and Nine entered the Council Chambers to report on their mission. The Yondaime Hokage sat at the center of the table, flanked by his two advisors. Standing on the right was the council of elders, including the Sandaime, who had arrived from the capital a couple of days earlier. Standing on the left were Shikaku, Tsunade, Hizashi, Shibi and Tasuna. Jiraiya had sent a messenger toad to give the general details of the mission and requested all of them to be present. They didn't know the more critical information; Jiraiya didn't want to risk the message being intercepted. Team Seven stood before the council while Jiraiya and the ANBU stayed back. Hiashi immediately noticed the two swords Hinata carried on her back. Minato stood up – Congratulations on your mission, Team Seven. You did great. You managed the situation splendidly despite the mission turning out to be more dangerous than we anticipated – the three genins smiled. Hinata blushed – Now, Tenzo, could you give us the details of your mission? – Tenzo cleared his throat – Before that, Yondaime-sama, there is something Hinata wants to do – Hiashi looked surprised. He looked at his daughter, taking the swords from her back – Father, Uncle – said Hinata as she held the Samurai's swords and made a reverence – These swords are a gift to you – Hiashi and Hizashi looked at each other. They stepped in, took the swords and unsheathed them. They could see it was a fine smith work. The blades were impressive. However, the Hyugas seldom use weapons. They didn't understand why Hinata would offer them these swords. Nevertheless, they made a small reverence to Hinata and accepted the swords – Where did you get these fine swords, Hinata? – asked Hiashi as he contemplated the sword. Tenzo spoke – Those swords belonged to two Samurais from the Land of Iron who worked for Gato. Hinata took the swords from them before defeating them – Hinata blushed. Hiashi looked at his daughter, surprised. He wasn't the only one; most people looked surprised by the statement, but only Minato didn't seem to find it surprising at all. He gave a proud smile to Hinata. Tenzo then proceeded to account for all the events of the mission. Hiashi still found it hard to believe that his shy daughter had done such impressive things. The use of raiton with the gentle fist bothered him, but it didn't matter if it meant his daughter was not a failure. Sasuke received praise from everyone when they found out he had awakened his Sharingan. Naruto was praised for his ingenuity with the paralyzing kunai and controlling his chakra burst. Only Sasuke and Hinata didn't seem to understand where that chakra came from. The air in the room felt heavier when Tenzo mentioned Orochimaru. Tenzo mentioned the Kiri-nin they had brought and stopped before saying the name. He turned to look at his sensei. Jiraiya pulled the Kashi Jotai seal from his vest and walked towards Tsunade. He offered the seal to her. She took it and gave Jiraiya a puzzled look – Nono's alive – said Jiraiya with a gentle smile to Tsunade. She was dumbfounded. She stared at the seal and then at Jiraiya – You mean that – Jiraiya nodded – Yeah, it looks like she managed to flee Kirigakure, although something must've happened when she did. Zabuza mentioned he found her on the verge of death – Tsunade held the tag close to her chest and poured a few tears. Itachi, Mukai, and the genins had no idea why this Nono would mean so much to Tsunade-sama. More important and delicate matters needed to be discussed, and the genins could not listen. Minato stood up – Team Seven, it's needless to say, but nonetheless, we are proud of all of you – said Minato, staring at his son. Naruto blushed and gave his father a broad smile – You have earned time to relax. You have the week off. You'll be glad to hear Team Eight and Ten also have time off this week. I think it is an excellent opportunity for all of you to catch up. You're dismissed – said Minato. Naruto and his friends left the room. They wanted to see their classmates so badly.
Once the genins were gone, Minato spoke – How precarious is the situation, sensei? – Jiraiya crossed his arms, and his expression hardened – There is no doubt Orochimaru's after Naruto, Sasuke and Hinata. However, what bothers me the most is this organization – Jiraiya looked at his sensei. The old man seemed worried – I can only think of one man who could convince or force Orochimaru to work under him – the Toad Sannin continued – Madara Uchiha – said Fugaku. Jiraiya nodded. Jiraiya had entrusted his disciples with the existence of Madara – Don't you think they could be working directly under Meio? Or have we considered the possibility of Madara being Meio? – Hiashi questioned. Jiraiya denied with his head – I can't say for sure whether Meio is or isn't Madara. We were never able to find out who he was. But what I do know is that Meio and the leader of this organization are not the same person – Shibi interrupted this time – How can you be so sure, Jiraiya-sama? – Jiraiya looked at Tenzo, and the Mokuton Shinobi spoke – Kisame mentioned Meio had hired them to kill Gato, and the plant-looking shinobi said their leader had ordered them to take Gato's head to Meio – Shibi and the rest seemed to ponder the information. They stayed silent for a while – Besides, I don't see why Madara would bother to kill a simple mob leader. I don't think they're the same person at all. We have no idea how many members this organization has or who they are, either. But by the looks of it, it is most likely only S-rank shinobis. Kisame gave Konoha much trouble in the last war – Jiraiya said, and everyone nodded – Not to mention the problem with the Land of Woods and this new Otogakure – Jiraiya, Tsunade and Hiruzen gritted their teeth – Orochimaru leading a hidden village is no good omen. Madara is most certainly involved in the Land of Woods. The reports from Izumi and her team are not encouraging either. A rebellious group within Takigakure tried to frame Konoha to start a war. Is there any news on Orochimaru's remaining spy? – Jiraiya said as he hit the wall of the room. Minato denied with his head – or spies. We can't be sure only one spy is left in the village. We've put Orochimaru's former genin team under surveillance – said Shikaku – You can't seriously think Anko is helping Orochimaru – said Jiraiya. He knew how much that girl had suffered. He and Minato had placed a seal on Anko's curse seal. Orochimaru had injected a portion of his own chakra into her. Minato, Jiraiya and Kushina deducted he intended to have influence over her. She had suffered the hate of the villagers after Orochimaru's betrayal. They thought she could be a traitor, too. One of Orochimaru's genins died in a mission, and the third one, Megane, was the Jounin instructor of Team Thirteen – We're taking all the needed precautions, Jiraiya-sama – replied Shikaku. Jiraiya gritted his teeth. He didn't like suspecting and mistrusting his fellow citizens. Jiraiya looked at his old sensei – What about the Land of Woods, sensei? Did you find out something? – the Toad Sennin asked. Hiruzen sighed – The Daimyo has not spoken with his nephew in years, more precisely, in twelve years – Jiraiya frowned. That's Naruto's age – So, the Daimyo lost contact with his nephew right after the Kyubi's incident – The old man nodded. Jiraiya cursed – At least we now have Nono. She can give us some clarity in this darkness. She spent years in Kirigakure. She must know something – said Tasuna. Tsunade held the seal tighter to her chest. She was nervous. She was ashamed. She had failed Nono – I'll take her to the hospital and start treating her. I'll let you know when she's awake – said Tsunade
Note: In manga chapter 599, it is shown in Obito's flashback that one of Anko's genin teammates was Team Kabuto's sensei in the Chunin Exams arc (sensei of Yoroi, Misumi and Kabuto). His name has never been revealed, so I just used Megane. If he was part of Anko's team, he was also an Orochimaru disciple.
The room stayed silent for a while after Tsunade left the room. Jiraiya broke the silence – What are your thoughts, Minato? You've been oddly quiet – asked the Toad Senin. Minato looked up and leaned back on his chair – War is coming, there is no doubt about it. Yet the crucial question remains unanswered – Minato paused briefly – who we can trust, and who will we have to fight? We have Sunagakure on our side. Kirigakure is most likely under Madara's control; the same goes for the Land of Woods. Orochimaru-san has founded a new village, and we have this – said Minato as he pulled a scroll from his vest. Only Fugaku and Hiashi were aware of the scroll's content. Jiraiya and Hiruzen frowned. The former Hokage recognized the seal of the Raikage on the scroll. Jiraiya took the scroll from Minato and read it – Damn it! – said Jiraiya as he looked at Minato and handed the scroll to his sensei. The old man read it and had a similar reaction – Things are only getting worse – said the old man as he rubbed his forehead – Minato looked at the elders, then to the heads of the ANBU and the Jounin commander – As you know, this year is Konoha's turn to host the Chunin exams. The Raikage has formally requested to be allowed to attend the final stage of the exams – Minato commented. It was the right of the host village to decide whether to allow the Kages of the other villages to attend the exams. Having an enemy Kage in their villages was dangerous. Kirigakure hadn't participated in or hosted the Chunin exams in years. The other Four Great Villages, including Konoha, wouldn't normally allow the Kages to attend the exams. However, given that within Sunagakure's list of candidates were the three Kazekage's children, Konoha had formally invited him to attend the final phase of the exams; this opened the door for the Raikage to demand his presence to be allowed, too. Shikaku rubbed his forehead as well – That can't be good. The Raike despises Konoha more than any other Kage. The tensions with Kumogakure increased when we refused an alliance – Koharu interrupted Shikaku – are you suggesting we should've accepted that stupid alliance proposal? – The Jounin Commander denied with his head – Not at all, Koharu-sama. That was the wisest decision. As things are developing, it seems now more palpable that Kumo is allied with Madara. We are also forced to invite Otogakure to the Chunin exams, which would mean we'll open the doors to Orochimaru's subordinates – The Jounin commander continued rubbing his head as if trying to find a solution – Perhaps we can send aid to Takigakure. If we help Hasui-dono put an end to the rebellion he's facing, we could gain his support – said Shikaku. The former counselors seemed to agree with him – There is not much time left until the Chunin exams. If we're facing an imminent war, we can't spare shinobis to deal with other villages' problems. We need to strengthen our borders! – said Tasuna. Shibi agreed with him. Even the counselors seemed divided; while Hiashi agreed with Tasuna and Shibi, Fugaku agreed with Shikaku and the elders, an odd event given that Fugaku didn't get along with the former counselors. Jiraiya looked at his disciple – We can deny the Raikage's request – said the Toad Sannin. The former counselors, Homura and Koharu, gave him a skeptical look – You don't understand politics, Jiraiya. We can't just simply deny his request when we have already announced the Kazekage's presence. That would make us look weak, and the Land of Lighting's Daimyo may get insulted if we do so. Do you know what happens when a rich Daimyo with a frail ego is insulted? Have you forgotten what started the Second Great War? Politics is as dangerous as the battlefield. We may suspect the Raikage's intentions, but there is nothing certain. On the other hand, a conflict will certainly break out if you offend someone like Yosuke-dono (Land of Lighting's Daimyo) – Koharu pointed out. Jiraiya hated politics. That was the main reason he rejected the mantle of Hokage when Sarutobi-sensei asked him to succeed him. Jiraiya turned to look at his student – What shall we do, Yondaime? – Minato sighed. He wondered what Madara's ultimate goal was. The Ghost of the Uchiha wouldn't go into such trouble just for vengeance. There must be something else, an ulterior motive, and he's using the other villages for that. Tasuna was right; Nono may be a key piece before making any rushed decision – Taking a decision right now would be too precipitated. We'll wait for Nono to wake up and listen to what she has to report. Once we know the situation in Kirigakure, we can make a more informed decision – The elders and Jiraiya smiled at Minato's ruling – as wise as always, Minato – said the former Hokage.
Konoha's Hospital.
The Hospital door was burst open. Tsunade walked in at a steady pace. Her green haori floated behind her as she walked by. Everyone looked at her when she walked in – Listen up, everyone! Prepare the OR for me and call Shizune immediately! – the people around nodded in agreement and rushed to fulfill her commands. Medical shinobis walked by her side, taking notes of all her needs. She didn't stop for a second. She continued walking and giving orders. When she finished, the shinobis left her side and rushed to prepare everything she needed. No one dared to ask who the patient was. They'd never seen Tsunade-sama like this before. Tsunade knew from what Tenzo had said that Nono had been in a kind of coma for more than a month. Zabuza and Haku had barely kept her alive. She had no idea how extensive the damage was. She arrived at the OR's area. She saw a group of medic-nins waiting for her outside one of the operating rooms. She walked in – Tsunade-sama, we're ready! – Tsunade smiled at Shizune, as efficient as ever. A large, complicated, square-shaped formula was drawn on the floor. Shizune, Kito and Mogusa were seated at the corners of the square – Alright, everyone – Tsunade said as she pulled the Kashi Jotai seal and placed it on the center of the seal formula – Be ready to act as fast as possible. She's been in a coma for too long, and her organs may collapse – everyone nodded – Tsunade sat on the remaining corner of the square and released the seal, revealing Nono. Everyone was shocked to see the former Head of the Hospital in such a condition – Knock it off! There is no time to waste! – urged Tsunade. Tsunade and the rest activated the jutsu – Chikatsu Saisei no Jutsu! – Their chakra started flowing towards Nono – Tsunade-sama, How? – asked Shizune – No time to explain. Focus on saving her life! – Shizune did as was told – Don't die on me, Nono – Tsunade muttered to herself as she bit her lip. Shizune knew she only did that when she was nervous. Most of Nono's organs were malfunctioning. She had internal injuries; from what Tenzo said, she might have been dragged by the ocean ashore. Her lungs were the most damaged.
With Naruto, Sasuke and Hinata
The three genins left the Hokage tower with high morale. Naruto tried poorly to hide his excitement after his Father's praises – Your face will go numb if you keep smiling like that, knucklehead! – said Sasuke mockingly – You can say all you want, dunce. I don't care. Besides, I don't think I've ever seen you smile this much, either. What do you think, Hinata? – said Naruto, teasing Sasuke. Hinata giggled, and Sasuke blushed – Oh! Look at that! I didn't know the Sharingan turned your face crimson red, too – said Naruto, laughing – What did you just say? – said Sasuke, trying to calm himself and reduce the redness on his face. Before Sasuke and Naruto could continue teasing each other – Oi, Guys! It's been so long! – they heard Kiba's voice and Akamaru's barks. They turned and saw Team Eight walking their way – Hey! We were just planning on looking for you guys! – said Naruto effusively – That's just perfect because we're on our way to meet with Team Ten at Yakiniku Q – said Kiba before being interrupted by Sakura – Sasuke-kun, it's so good to see you – Sasuke gasped. He didn't miss Sakura's fangirling – It looks like she still only cares about the dunce, don't you think, Hinata? – Hinata giggled – Yeah, sure. Whatever – said Sasuke as he stepped back. Kiba gritted his teeth. He hated the way Sakura always fussed about Sasuke. He had to admit she'd been doing it less and less, though. Ever since the day she talked with Izumi-sensei alone, she seemed to have relaxed about Sasuke. However, one look at him after a while, and she became the same fangirl from the academy.
Both teams headed to the BBQ place to meet Team Ten. Team Ten was already inside the restaurant. When they entered, Sasuke noticed that Ino hadn't tied her hair in a double bun like she did when he saw her in the Missions Assignment Room. She had a long golden ponytail, as she did during the academy. He smiled – Clever girl. She noticed the weakness of long hair and ties it when she's going out on a mission – Sasuke thought as he smirked. Sakura noticed Sasuke's smile when he saw Ino. Her expression saddened. Izumi-sensei told her that most Uchiha men value strength and talent over beauty and that if she wanted to get Sasuke's attention, she needed to stop chasing him and show him her strength. Still, she wondered what Sasuke could've noticed in just a quick look to smile at the sight of Ino. Would it be that she was being trained by the Sandaime-sama? Sakura frowned. She would prove to everyone she could be strong despite being from a civilian family. She stepped forward leaving Sasuke behind. Sasuke found it odd, but it was better for him. Sakura took the seat next to Kiba, who looked at her, dumbfounded.
Once everyone was seated – So, how did your missions go? – Choji asked Team Seven and Eight as he placed the meat on the grill. Choji was drooling. Kiba spoke before Naruto could say anything – Oh man, that was a hard mission! We were ambushed by some rogue ninjas from Takigakure. They were trying to double-frame Konoha and Takigakure to start a war between both nations – all seemed surprised, especially by the casualty Kiba spoke about. Sasuke looked at Shino – is that true? Or is Kiba trying to show off? – Sasuke raised an eyebrow as he asked – He speaks the truth. The leader of the group used a weird Suiton jutsu. He had his body covered in water and used it as armor. He could also change its shape and turn his water armor into weapons – Kiba interrupted Shino – Hey! Why would I lie about it? – Akamaru barked at Sasuke. Shikamaru was intrigued. Shikamaru ignored Kiba and asked – so, what happened then? – that man gave a hard fight to Izumi-sensei. He used a jutsu that made him immune to sensei's Sharingan – said Sakura. Sasuke was shocked – The leader and a few others escaped, though – Team Eight explained in detail their mission. Sasuke and Naruto noticed Shikamaru's look. The Nara boy was lazy, or he used to be, but he was smart. He looked perturbed. Shikamaru noticed Naruto and Sasuke were staring at him – So, how about you, guys? How did your first mission outside the village go? – said the Nara boy, trying to deflect the attention from him. Team Seven got serious – Well, it turned out to be more dangerous than we thought – Naruto and Sasuke looked at Hinata – We almost lost Hinata. She saved us both – said Sasuke. Choji choked on his food. Ino and Sakura stood up abruptly – What do you mean you almost lost her? – said both kunoichis simultaneously. Team Seven told them everything. Shikamaru gritted his teeth – Hinata! You're amazing! You've become so strong! – said Ino and Sakura, on the verge of tears – So, you got your Sharingan at last, huh? It looks like you also have some talent, after all, Naruto. But I still can't believe you met the Snake Sannin Orochimaru – said Kiba, smirking – So, he's really after you – said Choji. Ino and Shikamaru gave him an accusing look – What do you mean, Choji? – Choji gulped. Naruto and Sasuke looked at each other, then at Shikamaru – Spit it out, Shikamaru! – he sighed – I guess it can't be helped – Team Ten said everything about their mission and what they found out. Team Eight and Ten yelled at the same time – What! – Naruto broke his chopsticks – Mizuki-sensei is a traitor?! – Sasuke gritted his teeth – You're missing the big picture, Naruto. There is at least one more spy in Konoha who works for Orochimaru. That, and – before Sasuke could continue, Shino spoke – These events might not be isolated from each other. The Land of Woods invaded the Land of Fire to attempt an assassination on the Sandaime; Orochimaru infiltrated Konoha and has an entire hidden village under his command and is going after you three and a rebellious group from another village trying to force Konoha into a war – everyone went quiet. Ero-sennin looked indeed perturbed by Orochimaru and Kisame working together, along with that plant-looking man – it all makes sense, now – said Naruto. Shikamaru looked at him, but Sasuke spoke first – We had left the Hokage Tower before we ran into Kiba – so what? – interrupted Kiba. Hinata spoke for the first time – There were a lot of people present for just a report hearing. The Hokage's council, along with the council of elders, Shikaku-san, Shibi-san, my uncle and the leader of the ROOT ANBU – Tasuna-sama – said Shino. Sasuke nodded. Tasuna was his father's second in command within the ROOT. Naruto extended his fist – That can't be good – Ino said – Well, it doesn't matter what comes next. We just need to get stronger. We'll kick the ass of everyone who threatens Konoha – said Naruto effusively. Sasuke and Shikamaru smiled. The blond had a talent to cheer them up. The nine genins spent the day together.
Konoha Hospital, that night.
Tsunade and the rest broke the jutsu. Tsunade sighed – Well done, everyone. Take her to a room. I'll check on her in a bit – a new group of medical shinobis entered the room with a gurney. They took Nono and left the OR. Tsunade stood up while Kito and Mogusa fell on their backs, exhausted. Shizune trembled as she stood up but seemed in better shape than the other two. Tsunade approached Kito and placed her hand on his forehead, sharing some of her chakra. She then did the same with Mogusa – That should be enough – said Tsunade as she saw Kito and Mogusa stand up – Thank you, Tsunade-sama – Both shinobis said as they made a reverence to Tsunade. She looked at them – You still need to rest. You two can take the day off tomorrow. You did well today – said Tsunade before leaving the OR, followed by Shizune. Koti and Mogusa looked at each other – It is still hard to believe she did most of the healing and still has spare chakra to share with us. She's really amazing – said Mogusa. Koti nodded. It was thanks to Yondaime that she was back, and now we have Nono-sama back – They smiled. They left the OR. They heard people cheering for Nono's return as they walked the halls on their way out. Having Tsunade-sama, Shizune-san, and now Nono-sama thrilled everyone.
Tsunade and Shizune stood on the roof of the Hospital. Tsunade's gaze was fixed on her grandfather's and granduncle's faces on the Hokage Rock. Shizune knew Tsunade-sama was nervous about what was about to come. She only came here to look at the Hokage Rock when something bothered her deeply. Telling the truth to Nono would be tough for Tsunade-sama – Should I inform the Yondaime she's out of danger? – Tsunade turned to face Shizune – Not yet. I need to talk with her alone first – Shizune feared she would say that – I can be there with you! Or I can call Jiraiya-sama! – Tsunade denied it with her head – No, I must do it alone. She deserves that much – Tsunade said as she walked toward the stairs.
Tsunade walked into Nono's room. Nono remained unconscious due to Tsunade's chakra influence during the healing process. Tsunade looked at Nono briefly before igniting her right hand in greenish-blue chakra. She placed her hand on Nono's forehead, and she woke up. She straightened up abruptly, confused – Easy, Nono, easy! You're safe! You're back home! – said Tsunade gently. Nono was dumbfounded when she saw Tsunade's face – Tsunade-sama! What happened? How did I get here? – Tsunade offered her a glass of water – There will be time to explain it, Nono. However, we first must talk about … – Tsunade was interrupted – The Yondaime-sama! I need to talk with him immediately! – Tsunade bit her lip – I'll send word to Minato, but first, we need to talk about Kabuto – The name was like a cold dagger in Nono's heart. She had been Tsunade's disciple, too. She could read Tsunade-sama almost as well as Shizune – Nono; I'm so sorry – Tears poured from Nono's eyes – So, you received my letter – Tsunade nodded – I knew I couldn't trust Danzo's-sama promise – It is my fault, Nono! If we had done something sooner! – Nono stared at the night through the window of her room – How? When? – asked Nono, still sobbing. She was calmer than Tsunade had expected. She had been a member of the ROOT for decades, after all – I got your letter a couple of weeks after you left – Nono gasped – You got my letter one year sooner than you were supposed to – said Nono, her voice trembling. She turned to face Tsunade's eyes – Was my son dead by then already? – Tsunade denied with her head – Your son had already been sent on an infiltration mission in Iwagakure long before you came to Danzo with your offer. He lied to you when he said Kabuto was on another base and he wouldn't let you see him – Nono held the blanket and twisted it angrily – You know how infiltration tasks are, we couldn't – Tsunade was interrupted by Nono; she held Tsunade's hands – It wasn't your fault, Tsunade-sama. You couldn't risk his cover. I comprehend that – her voice trembled – How did he die? – Shizune, Jiraiya, and I got into Iwagakure when they hosted the Chunin Exams. We discovered that he was declared MIA a couple of years before – Nono's eyes went wide open. She smiled – So, they never found his body? He might still be alive! – Tsunade gasped. The possibilities of that were close to zero. If he survived, he should've come back to Konoha. She didn't want Nono to get false hopes – Nono, it's been years since that. If he didn't return to Iwagakure or Konoha, it's unlikely that he … - He's alive, Tsunade-sama. I know it! That's what kept me sane and alive all these years! I know it in my heart. Even if he's not my real son, our bond is strong. I know he's alive, and I'll find him – said Nono firmly. Tsunade admired her determination – Then, I'll help you find him – said Tsunade. Nono smiled at her. Then she remembered how serious the situation was. She cleansed her tears – I need to speak with Yondaime-sama! – Tsunade nodded. I'll send Shizune for him – Tsunade burst her chakra, and a few moments later the door opened – Hai, Tsunade-sama – said Shizune as she stepped in – Inform Minato and the council that Nono is awake and they must come here – Hai, Tsunade-sama – said Shizune as she gave a broad happy smile to Nono – You've grown into a beautiful woman, Shizune-chan. It's so good to see you – said Nono. Shizune blushed – It's good to see you, too, Nono-sama! – said Shizune before leaving.
Nono looked at Tsunade nervously – Is Danzo-sama and the ROOT still operating? – she was breathing heavily – That old bastard has been stripped of all authority. He's not even able to use ninjutsu anymore – Tsunade told Nono in detail about the binding jutsu that Minato had placed on him and that Fugaku had taken over the ROOT. Nono seemed amused by the news. Her happiness lasted shortly – Tsunade-sama, about Nawaki-kun – Tsunade held her hand – It's okay, Nono. I know your intentions were good. Besides, I took in Tenzo. He was raised as a Senju – Nono seemed confused – Tenzo? Who's Tenzo? – Tsunade chuckled – I forgot. You know him by the name of Kinoe – Nono smiled just as someone knocked on the door. Tsunade stood up and opened the door. It was then that Nono noticed that the symbol on Tsunade's back was no longer the "gamble" kanji. The Senju crest adorned her back now. Nono smiled. Tsunade opened the door, and Minato, Fugaku, Hiashi, Hiruzen and Jiraiya walked in. Nono left shortly after the appointment of the new council. She wasn't used to seeing Fugaku and Hiashi as the counselors. She was surprised mainly by the former Hokage's clothes. He wasn't using his Hokage robes anymore. That was odd, she thought.
Nono tried to stand up, but Tsunade didn't let her do so – We thought we had lost you, Nono – said Minato as he stood right in front of her bed; Tsunade and Jiraiya were together beside Nono's bed. The former Hokage took the chair and sat next to his students. Hiashi and Fugaku stayed by the door – I tried many times to leave, but Kirigakure is an impenetrable fortress. It is always heavily guarded. No one gets in or out without the Mizukage's authorization. It took me close to a year to get in – said Nono as she remembrance the awful experience – I'm glad you made it eventually – said Minato gently – So, what changed? How did you escape? – asked Fugaku. Tsunade gave him a cold look. The Uchiha ignored Tsunade – Kirigakure is in the middle of a civil war – Nono's statement shocked everyone – Why? – asked Hiashi. Nono sighed – Before I get to that, I need to tell you everything from the beginning – said Nono before taking a deep breath.
– It all started with the Third Mizukage, Gesshoku Yuki. Most of the highest ranks within Kirigakure's shinobis didn't seem to agree with the Mizukage's idea of betraying Konoha and destroying Uzushiogakure. They found it odd and irrational. The current Mizukage, Yagura Karatachi, and the current leader of the rebellion, Mei Terumi, expressed their concerns about his plans and tried to persuade him from it. They thought the Third Mizukage's behavior was odd. However, they were loyal to him and supported him when the Third didn't change his mind. Gesshoku-dono died, and Yagura-dono had no option but to continue the war against Konoha when he was appointed Fourth Mizukage. Gesshoku-dono had devised a plan to release the Rokubi in Konoha, which Yagura didn't plan to carry on when he became Mizukage – Minato was taken aback. He didn't understand. The plan had been carried out. He remembered that very well. Kiri had kidnapped his student, Rin Nohara, and sealed the Rokubi inside her. They planned to let Konoha rescue her so they could release the Rokubi inside the village. However, Rin overheard their plan and sacrificed her life to protect the village by dying at Kakashi's hands. The event had traumatized Kakashi. It took years for Kakashi to overcome that pain. He noticed Nono stared at him when she said that. She wasn't done, so he let her continue without interruption – Over my years in Kirigakure, I escalated among the ranks. I became head of the medical team of Kirigakure – Tsunade smiled – That's no surprise, Nono – Nono smiled back and blushed lightly – I became closely acquainted with Mei Terumi. She confided with me and Ao-san that Yagura started acting weird shortly after becoming Mizukage. After Yagura's abrupt behavior change, he retook Gesshoku's plan, and – she stopped for a second. Her gaze fixed on Minato – Yagura ordered specifically to kidnap Rin. He wouldn't accept anyone other than Rin as jinchuriki – Minato frowned – did she say why Yagura wanted Rin specifically? – asked Minato. Jiraiya was surprised to see Minato that mad. He always kept his cool despite the situation. Nono denied with her head – Not even Mei-san understands why he targeted your student. You were battling on another front against Kumo and Iwa. You haven't engaged in a fight with Kiri. It made no sense for Kiri commanders to drag your attention when they were barely coping against the Sandaime-sama, Jiraiya-sama, and Orochimaru – Jiraiya looked at his student. Minato was pissed.
Nono cleared her throat – One day after Rin was rescued, something odd happened – Everyone stared at Nono, intrigued – Mei-san said Yagura started behaving normally again. As normal as he can be. It seems Yagura always had a taste for fighting and bloodshed "with purpose" – Hiruzen seemed disgusted by that – Yagura was enraged for the Rokubi plan being carried out without his approval. He had forgotten he'd ordered it – Minato looked at Fugaku. Fugaku's expression confirmed his suspicions. Nono continued – The war continued with a fully lucid Yagura. Mei and the other commanders feared someone was influencing the Third and Fourth Mizukages into the war, but they never confirmed it. Things seemed to improve with Yagura, so they let it go since it would be impossible for Yagura to be trapped in a genjutsu since he is a perfect jinchuriki – Unless both Jinchuriki and Biju are trapped in the genjutsu – Thought Fugaku and the rest but allowed Nono to continue without interruptions. Nono continued her story – Yagura wanted to recover the Rokubi, and it seemed the Bijus could sense each other. The Sanbi informed Yagura of the Rokubi rebirth two years after Rin's death. He led Yagura to the Rokubi. The Sanbi even helped Yagura find the best match among Kiri-nins to become the Rokubi jinchuriki. The Sanbi chose a chunin named Utakata – everyone seemed surprised. Babies and children are better suited to become jinchurikis since they can adapt more quickly to the Biju's chakra. It was an impressive achievement to have full-grown shinobi become jinchuriki – Utakata has a blind loyalty to Yagura, and thanks to the Sanbi intervention, the Rokubi follows any of Yagura's commands. Utakata is not a perfect jinchuriki, though. The Rokubi only cooperates with him when the Sanbi and Yagura order – Jiraiya cursed – So, basically, Kiri has the same power as Kumo. One perfect Jinchuriki and another cooperative when needed – Nono nodded – Over the years, Yagura's behavior changed moderately, rather than drastically, as it did during the war. That made it harder for Kiri to notice how bad things were getting. Small several changes are harder to notice than a big drastic change. Zabuza, one of the Seven Swordsmen of the Mist, led an attempt at Coup d'etat – that caught Jiraiya's attention – Zabuza asked for Mei's support for the Coup. However, she refused. She was still in denial. She trusted Yagura. They had been part of the same battalion. They both survived the Third's survival graduation exam. She still had some respect for the Mizukage. Zabuza failed and fled Kirigakure with a small boy – Jiraiya spoke – Haku – Nono was surprised. She nodded – How did you know? – Team Seven ran into Zabuza and Haku on a mission. It was Zabuza who saved you – said Jiraiya. Nono stayed mute for a while – are they cooperating with Konoha? I suspected Zabuza would try again to kill Yagura. I never imagined he would appeal to Konoha to achieve it – Jiraiya denied it with his head. Minato spoke this time – Zabuza died, Nono, and Kisame and Orochimaru took Haku – Nono stuttered – Kisame and Orochimaru are working together? How did those two end up together? And Haku's with them now. That boy is a threat if he's with those two – Hiruzen spoke this time – We know the boy is from the Yuki Clan and has the Ice Release. He's indeed a potential threat, but I still don't understand your reaction, Nono – said the old man. Nono looked at him, worry in her eyes – You don't get it, Sandaime-sama. That boy is not just a member of the Yuki Clan. He's Gesshoku's great-grandson and Zabuza's son – that's impossible, Gesshoku had no children – said the old man, dumbfounded – He had an illegitimate son. He never recognized him since he didn't inherit the Ice Release. In a strike of fate, Zabuza, who despised Gesshoku-dono, fell in love with his granddaughter. He didn't know at the time. Hyori, Zabuza's wife, told him the truth when she was pregnant. She died at childbirth – Hiruzen rubbed his nose bridge – If the boy grows to be nearly as strong as Gesshoku, damn it, and working with Orochimaru. This is seriously bad – said the old man – There is nothing we can do, Jiji – said Jiraiya as he placed his hand on the old man's shoulder. Hiruzen sighed.
Note: In the canon, Kiri sealed the Sanbi inside Rin. In my fanfic, it was the Rokubi since Yagura was already the jinchuriki and Mizukage at that time. The name of the Third Mizukage is never revealed. Since he always had his eyes closed whenever he was shown, I chose the name Gesshoku, which means "Moon eclipse."
The Third Mizukage was controlled by Madara, the same as for Yagura at the beginning. The lapsus of lucidity after Rin's death is due to Madara's death. This was the time between Madara's death and Obito subduing him. Madara was less subtle when controlling them because he just needed to incite the destruction of Uzushiogakure and make sure Rin was captured. Obito wanted revenge; he wanted to sink Kiri into decay and use it as he needed.
Nono took a deep breath before talking again – A few months ago, Yagura informed Kiri of a drastic change for Kirigakure. That announcement finally made Mei and Ao suspect the sanity of Yagura. Ao-san confirmed that Yagura was under a genjutsu – Hiashi frowned again after Ao's name was brought up for a second time – he used his stolen Byakugan, I suppose – Hiashi said. Everyone noticed the anger and bitterness in his voice. Nono nodded – Mei finally acknowledged the truth about Yagura. She suspects the Third Mizukage was also trapped in a genjutsu when he decided to betray Konoha and Uzushiogakure. Mei and Ao plotted a Coup d'etat. She started a rebellion against Yagura. The war in Kirigakure has been intense. Yagura still counts on the support of most of the shinobis. They're loyal to his title despite his actions. He also has the Rokubi on his side. The rebellion is being overwhelmed. With the intense battle, the security of the country diminished. I thought I could escape undetected. However, I was spotted and attacked. I still managed to escape, but I lost a lot of blood. I healed myself on my way to the Land of Waves. I must've lost consciousness, and at some point, the sea tide must've dropped me off my boat and dragged me ashore. I guess that's when Zabuza found me – Nono said as she curled her blanket nervously – Zabuza-san was not an evil man. He cared deeply for his village. He didn't long to be Mizukage; he offered Mei the mantle if she supported him – Nono realized that was not important for Konoha and stopped talking about that – Anyway, the identity of whoever trapped Yagura in a genjutsu is still unknown for Kirigakure. They have no idea who could've done it. However, – before Nono continued, Minato spoke – You suspect it is the same masked man that attacked Konoha – Nono nodded – I don't know the details of that man or if Konoha has found him. Danzo-sama only told me he was responsible for the Kyubi's attack. I figured that if that man could subdue the Kyubi, he could subdue the Sanbi and Yagura in a genjutsu – the presents in the room exchanged looks. They all seemed to agree, or more accurately, confirmed their suspicions. Minato stared at Nono – Nono-san, you mentioned Yagura wanted to do something drastic and that's what triggered the rebellion, what was that? – the others were so engrossed in the revelation of their suspicions that they failed to notice Nono seemed more nervous, and for some reason, she didn't say right away what that was. Nono looked up and sighed – Yagura ordered Kiri to prepare to start a war against Konoha – everyone was taken aback. The former Hokage stood up from the chair abruptly – What? When? – asked Fugaku and Hiashi – The invasion is supposed to take place on the Chunin Exams – the counselors stared at Minato. Minato was shocked. He frowned. Nono spoke again – However, Mei and the rebellion she leads are against the attack. Yagura has weakened Kiri's strength over the years. Mei knows that a war against Konoha in their condition would mean Kiri's doom. With the civil war Kiri's facing, I doubt they'll be able to attack in the Chunin Exams – Minato walked towards the window and stared at the village – Nono-san, do you know if the Mizukage is in contact with another Kage? – asked Minato. Nono seemed surprised by the question – Kirigakure is completely isolated, Yondaime-sama. Not even the Mizukage or the Daimyo, who is Yagura's hostage, communicate with the exterior – Minato turned abruptly – is the Daimyo being held hostage? – Nono stuttered. She had forgotten to mention that sooner – Hai, Yondaime-sama. He and his family have been hostages since the last war. The Third Mizukage had him subdued with his black ops when he rejected the idea of joining Kumo in the war against Konoha and Uzushiogakure. The Daimyo and his family are kept safe and sound. They pretty much continued with their everyday lives, except for the fact that the Daimyo is the Mizukage's puppet – Minato frowned and turned back to the window. He was pondering the situation. In the meantime, Hiruzen spoke – are you saying that Mei agreed with keeping the Daimyo hostage all these years? – Nono nodded – You know that some shinobis believe that the Kages and shinobis should rule over the Daimyos. That is a common feeling among many shinobis across the Five Great Nations. Danzo-sama is an excellent example of that. Mei believed Kiri would prosper better economically and militarily if the Mizukage ruled the country. She's the one who's ensured the Daimyo's safety all these years, though. She ensures he and his family continue having a luxurious life without interfering in the decision-making process of the Land of Water – everyone stayed silent for a while.
Minato knew that Kiri, wanting to attack during the Chunin exams, confirmed their concerns about the Raikage's intentions to attend the exams – Nono-san, the Chunin Exams are starting in two weeks from today – Nono gasped – No! That can't be true! It's months away! – Tsunade grabbed Nono's shoulder – Nono, you've been in a coma for a long time – Nono stayed silent, trying to take it in. Minato spoke again – Do you think the rebellion could've held their ground until now? – Nono nodded – Mei-san is really strong, and many strong shinobis follow her. Yagura has the numbers and the two Bijus, while Mei counts with the support of all the commanders and strongest shinobis of Kirigakure. I knew the moment the civil war broke out that Kirigakure couldn't attack during the chunin exams, even if Mei's rebellion lost the war – Minato knew Mei Terumi was a strong shinobi. She gave Kushina a hard time during the battle at Uzushiogakure. He turned from the window and looked at Nono – Do you think she's someone we can trust? – Nono looked at the Hokage, puzzled – what do you mean, Yondaime? – asked Nono – If we send support to the rebellion to defeat Yagura's forces, do you think we can have Mei as a trustworthy ally? – Minato looked at the former head of the hospital. His face was expressionless. Nono smiled – Absolutely, Yondaime-sama. That's why I took the risk of fleeing Kirigakure at the beginning of the war. I'm confident that if Konoha helps Mei's rebellion, it will benefit the village. Not to mention, we may be able to discover the masked man's identity if Yagura is freed from the Genjutsu and captured alive – Minato smirked. Nono was indeed an elite shinobi. She accomplished the impossible by infiltrating Kirigakure and gaining Mei's trust. No wonder Danzo wanted her back in the ROOT so desperately – Very well, then. Nono-san, you can rest now. We'll inform you of our plan of action. We'll need your insight to infiltrate Kiri – Tsunade pushed her former sensei out of her way to face Minato – You can't be suggesting sending Nono back to Kiri, Minato! – Tsunade was pissed – It's okay, Tsunade-sama. I can do it – said Nono with a gentle smile. Before Tsunade could protest, Minato spoke – That won't be necessary, Nono-san. I just want your intel about Kiri. You've earned the right to fully recover before rejoining the force. Besides, I'm sure your children from the orphanage will be thrilled to see you and want to spend as much time with you as possible. It's been twelve years. Some of them are shinobis now – Minato said with a broad smile. Nono's eyes watered. She longed to go back to the orphanage. Once her strength was back, she would go looking for Kabuto – Thank you, Yondaime-sama – said Nono as tears poured from her eyes. Tsunade looked at Minato and smiled fondly at him – Now, let's go. Nono needs to rest – said Minato as he opened the door to leave. He turned – Nono, you've given Konoha a great service. The village and the Land of Fire are indebted to you – said Minato before leaving the room, followed by the rest, except for Tsunade-sama. When they left the room, Minato made his chakra burst. The next moment, Genma, Raido and Iwashi, his elite bodyguards, appeared before him and kneeled – Hai, Hokage-sama – said the three simultaneously – Keep Nono's under protection 24/7. No one enters her room without my authorization or Tsunade's-sama. Tsunade-sama, Shizune-chan and Mikoto-san are the only ones authorized to treat her – said Minato firmly – Hai, Hokage-sama! – repeated the three and disappeared. Until they figured out who the spy or spies were, Minato needed to take all the precautions to prevent anyone from talking to Nono. Minato and the rest waited in the hall until Tsunade left the room, too. It was long past midnight already – I'll see you in the morning at the Council Chambers. After we're done with the official announcement of the Chunin Exams, I'll summon the War Council – said Minato. Jiraiya spoke – Is it prudent to summon the entire War Council? Orochimaru's spy hasn't been identified yet – the Toad Sannin said – I doubt one of the Clans' heads is a spy. I trust them, and we need them to prepare us properly and ensure we do not raise suspicions – Jiraiya sighed. He had no option but to trust Minato's judgment. He hated the feeling of mistrust within the village due to Orochimaru's influence. Everyone left.
Council Chambers: next morning
The Hokage sat, flanked by his two advisors. Before them stood the Jounin Instructors of all the current Genin Teams, the Academy teachers, and the Shinobis who will be part of the Chunin Exams organization – I assume all of you have guessed already why you're here – said the Yondaime Hokage, followed by several nods from the shinobis before him – I hereby announce two weeks from now, on the first day of July, the Chunin Exams shall begin. We expect the teams from the other villages to start arriving within the next days – the Hokage continued – This will be an atypical exam. As usual, Kirigakure didn't reply to the invitation. However, for the first time in the exams, Otogakure will send a team for the examination – shinobis started murmuring when they heard the name of Otogakure. Most of them had no idea of the existence of such a village. Minato studied the reactions of all the shinobis present to see if someone didn't seem surprised by the news. Hiashi inspected Megane's chakra to detect any perturbance but saw nothing – In addition to that, the Kazekage and Raikage have confirmed that they'll attend the final stage of the exams – this announcement made a bigger impression among the shinobis. Minato cleared his throat – Now, then. Let's begin with the Rookies of the year. Your teams fulfill all the requirements to be nominated. It is up to you, Tenzo Senju, Izumi Uchiha, and Sandaime-sama, to decide – Minato said as the three instructors stepped forward. Iruka looked at them nervously – I, Tenzo Senju, leader of Team Seven, formed by Hinata Hyuga, Sasuke Uchiha, and Naruto Namikaze, recommend these three genins for the Chunin Exams – The counselors and Hokage smirked. There seemed to be excitement among the other present shinobis, except for Iruka – I, Izumi Uchiha, leader of Team Eight, formed by Sakura Haruno, Kiba Inuzuka, and Shino Aburame, recommend these three genins for the Chunin Exams – some murmuring went on among the shinobis, and Iruka seemed more distressed – I, Hiruzen Sarutobi, leader of Team Ten, formed by Ino Yamanaka, Shikamaru Nara, and Choji Akimichi, recommend these three genins for the Chunin Exams – the announcement of the former Hokage's team also caused excitement among the presents. Iruka couldn't take it anymore – Hokage-sama! Please allow me to speak! – Iruka stepped forward, facing the three instructors. He gulped when he faced the former Hokage – I trained these nine genins. They were my students! It's not been even half a year since they graduated. It is too soon for them to take the Chunin Exam. They require more experience! I don't understand why their supervisors fail to see that – Tenzo was about to speak, but Fugaku spoke first – You're out of place, Iruka – the academy teacher turned nervously to face the counselor – These genins are not your students anymore. They are shinobis of Konoha. It is not up to you to decide. Or are you suggesting that the Hokage's son and our children – said Fugaku as he signaled to Hiashi – are not strong enough? – Iruka gulped – or perhaps you're suggesting that the Sandaime-sama is not suited enough to know if his team is ready? Do you think yourself wiser than him? Or do you doubt Tenzo's and Izumi's judgment as well? They all are shinobis forged on the battlefield, Iruka. I do not intend to diminish you, but you became an instructor just after a few missions outside the village. Do not come here trying to put your feelings over the judgment of these Jounin Instructors – Iruka started sweating. He tried to speak, but his voice failed him – You're too harsh on him, Fugaku – Minato commented – I'm just taking the blindfolds from his eyes, Hokage-sama – Minato sighed – Iruka, I know your intentions are noble and kind-hearted, but Fugaku is right. These genins are no longer academy students. They're soldiers. Good soldiers. You taught them well – Iruka lowered his head, ashamed, and joined back the multitude of shinobis – The council approves your recommendations – said Minato – Let's continue with the rest of the Genin teams.
After the details of the exams were announced, the shinobis left, except for the Hokage, his counselors and the former Hokage. Minato stood up, and Jiraiya appeared in a cloud of smoke – The war council is assembled, Minato – said the Toad Sannin. Minato nodded, and they left the Council Chamber to join the War Council.
War Council Chambers
The clans' head and other members of the War Council stood up when the Hokage entered the room and sat again after the Hokage. Jiraiya stayed standing, with his back leaned on the wall and crossed arms. Minato briefed the council about Nono's report. He left out the fact that the Third Mizukage could've been under a genjutsu, too. After a long and extended discussion of the possible actions Konoha could take – We can't dispatch a large number of shinobi to Kirigakure with the potential threat of Kumogakure and Orochimaru – Inoichi said. Most seemed to agree – We can't risk letting that rebellion in Kirigakure lose. If the masked man who attacked the village twelve years ago is controlling the Mizukage, we must do something. If the rebellion is suppressed, Konoha will be the next target! – Tsume said. She hated these meetings. But the situation was delicate. War could break out at any moment. They needed allies – What about a small elite group? – said Shikaku. Minato smirked. That was what he was expecting. That was precisely his plan. However, he didn't like forcing his will over the council. He let them think they had been part of the decision making. He would normally stay silent until someone, normally Shikaku, would suggest something similar to his plans, or lead them subtly into a certain choice – we can send an elite group to Kirigakure, and another one to Takigakure – Shikaku continued. Minato spoke before the idea grew further – For now, I think we could only afford to send aid to Kirigakure. Takigakure can wait until after the Chunin Exams, and Kiri's situation has been handled. The rebellious group of Takigakure doesn't seem to be taking direct action against Hasui-dono. They're trying to get them involved in a conflict with another nation. Takigakure's is not in a critical situation. Besides, Kirigakure and the masked man pose a greater threat. We need to deal with that first – everyone seemed to agree. Homura spoke this time – who will we send to Kirigakure? – asked the former counselor. Jiraiya stepped forward – I will go – everyone looked at the legendary Sannin. Tsunade stood up – I'll go too – Then, something they didn't expect happened – No – said Minato firmly. Everyone was taken aback. The sannins were the best option. Why would the Hokage refuse. Even Jiraiya and Tsunade were surprised. Hiruzen and Shikaku stared at the Hokage, thoughtfully – You two are the best option against Orochimaru, I'll need you here – Tsunade couldn't deny she wanted to fight Orochimaru after what he had done with his family. However, she also wanted to finish what Nono had started. Before Jiraiya or Tsunade could say anything – Besides, I have a mission for you, sensei. It is something I can only trust to you – Minato's tone implied he wouldn't allow any questioning about it. The members of the council knew better than to question the Yondaime when he didn't want to be questioned. They looked away. Jiraiya and Tsunade stared at Minato, puzzled – If not us, who? – Jiraiya asked – I already have two ANBU teams in mind. I will send Fugaku-san and Hiashi-san to lead them and negotiate the terms with Mei and the rebellion leaders in exchange for our support – Minato said. The counselors smirked. It had been a long time since they'd been on a mission. The council seemed to agree with the idea.
The council meeting continued for a few hours. The chambers were left with only Minato, his counselors, Tsunade, Jiraiya and Kushina – What mission do you have for me, Minato? – the former Hokage cleared his throat – It is actually a mission for me, Jiraiya – the counselors looked at the old man, puzzled – During the last three wars, Kumogakure and Iwagakure have been allies. However, Oonoki didn't request to attend the exams – Jiraiya smirked – I see. You suspect the old Tsuchikage hasn't decided yet to join Kumo in the siege – the old man nodded – Oonoki hates Konoha. Still, he, more than anyone outside Konoha, understands Madara's threat to the entire shinobi world. We need a strong ally for what may come If Kumogakure, like Kirigakure, is under Madara's control. We count on Suna's support. However, we can't rely on Kirigakure even if we succeed in helping the rebellion. Kiri might end up with its strength decimated. Oonoki is our best option – Minato spoke now – We need you to infiltrate Iwagakure, sensei. Not to investigate but to deliver a message to the Tsuchikage without anyone knowing. You'll have to find a way to reach him while he's alone – Jiraiya looked at his disciple – That's going to take time – Minato shook his head – We don't have time, sensei. I need you back in Konoha by the end of the second stage of the Chunin Exams – Jiraiya frowned. Between the second and final stages of the exams, there is a grace period of one month. If Kumo and Orochimaru indeed plan to attack, they'll do it during the final stage. Why would Minato need him back so long before that? Minato smiled – I need your help with another mission, sensei. I assure you I wouldn't demand this if it wasn't important – Kushina hugged Minato's arm. Surely, she knew what he was talking about. Jiraiya knew Minato too well. He nodded – You can consider it done, Minato – Hiruzen pulled two scrolls from his sleeve and gave them to Jiraiya. Minato did the same with two more scrolls – These are the private messages we're sending to the Tsuchikage, sensei. We made copies so you can read them and know how much we plan to tell him beforehand. That should help you find the right way to catch his attention when you meet him – Jiraiya smirked and saved the original two scrolls in his vest and the two copies on his sleeve.
Eight ANBUs appeared in the chamber a few minutes later, kneeling before the Hokage. Four of them wore white cloaks and the other four black cloaks. The black cloaks indicated they belonged to the ROOT, while the white cloaks were for the Hokage's ANBU – Remove your cloaks and masks – said Minato. The four ANBUs were Itachi, Mukai, Tenzo, and Kakashi. The four ROOT members were Shisui, Yoji Aburame, Kaede Shigaraki, and Kessho Yamanaka – You six will go with Fugaku-san and Hiashi-san to Kirigakure and help the rebellion to stop the Mizukage and prevent the attack on Konoha – said Minato signaling everyone, except Kakashi and Kessho. These two looked at each other, puzzled – Hai, Hokage-sama – Itachi, Mukai and Tenzo, you'll report to Hiashi – hai, Hokage-sama – Shisui, Yoji, Kaede, you'll report to Fugaku – hai, Hokage-sama – You leave in four days, after we get all the intel from Nono-san. Tenzo – said Minato and Tenzo stood up – missions for the teams participating in the Chunin Exams are forbidden during the exams. Inform your students of your absence – Hai, Hokage-sama. May I ask something? – Minato nodded – My genins still need training before the first stage of the exam, and they'll need more training during the grace period between the second and final stage – Minato and the counselors smirked – That if they make it to the final stage Tenzo – said Minato – I'm sure they'll do, Hokage-sama – that pleased the Hokage and counselors – You don't need to worry about that. Kakashi – the white-haired ANBU, stood up – Hai, Hokage-sama – Kakashi will look after your team while you're in Kirigakure – Tenzo nodded. He smiled at Kakashi. Tenzo knew Kakashi wanted to be Naruto's sensei. At least now he'll get a chance to be his temporary sensei. Minato spoke again – That's not your only mission, Kakashi. Kessho-san – Kessho stood up – There is a chance that an attack may happen during the Chunin Exams, and Kushina is a possible target – Minato knew that Madara wanted control over the Kyubi. It could be his chance to try again to obtain it – You two will be, from now on, Kushina's personal guard. Kessho, your team is also signed up for the Chunin Exams, and you, Kakashi, will be looking after Team Seven. I'm not asking you to neglect your teams. However, when you're not training your teams, you will look after her. Also, during the final stage of the exam, you shall not leave her side under any circumstances. Kushina is in no condition to fight – Kushina tightened her grip around Minato's arm and blushed. Everyone was surprised to hear that Kushina couldn't fight. They were counting on her chakra chains technique in case the Hachibi and Nibi jinchurikis were part of the attack. Tsunade rushed toward Kushina – are you okay, Kushina? Are you sick? – Kushina shook her head – We're expecting another baby – said Kushina as she rubbed her stomach. The pregnancy must be at a premature stage because her belly didn't reveal her condition – we just found out a few days ago – Tsunade hugged her tightly. The presents congratulated Minato and Kushina. Jiraiya, Tsunade and Kakashi were the most excited about the news – Does Naruto know? – asked Jiraiya. Minato shook his head – He just came back from his mission yesterday, and I came back home very late last night. We'll tell him the news tonight – said Minato. The effusiveness for the news continued for a while until Fugaku cleared his throat and spoke – I do not wish to ruin the mood, but we have much to do – You're right, Fugaku – said Minato. Jiraiya congratulated his student and Kushina one last time – I shall get going. I'll be back soon, Minato – said the toad sannin as he disappeared in a cloud of smoke – Kakashi, come with me – said Fugaku. Fugaku and Kakashi left for the ROOT headquarters. The rest of the ANBUs vanished, too. Tsunade and Kushina left together, and Minato and Hiashi returned to their work.
Note: as stated before, Akatsuki's existence was just discovered. They don't know they're after the Bijus. Minato knows there is something bigger than just Konoha's destruction in "Madara's" plans, but as of now, there is still not enough information for them to know about the Bijus. They might suspect that they want control over the power of the bijus or their jinchurikis. Like having Yagura under Obito's will. They still have no idea they want to extract the bijus and seal them. It is still too soon for that.
Training Ground Three. Later that afternoon.
The three genins arrived at the TG3 together. Naruto seemed annoyed – this is supposed to be our week off. Why did Tenzo-sensei summon us? – Naruto sat atop one of the three logs. Sasuke leaned back on another, and Hinata sat at the base of the third one. It wasn't long after that Tenzo-sensei appeared in a cloud of smoke – So, how's your time off going? Did you catch up with your friends already? – Tenzo stood in the middle of the meadow. His team told him about Team 8 & 10 missions. Tenzo knew this would happen, which the Yondaime expected when he ensured the three teams had time off simultaneously. Knowing it will keep them alert. Soon enough, they'll find out Otogakure will be participating in the exams, making them suspect – What's happening, sensei? – asked Sasuke – Jiraiya-sensei told you already in the Land of Waves. That's something for the Hokage and the Council to worry about. I'm here to inform you about something important – Sasuke and Naruto gritted their teeth. They wanted to know more, but they knew Sensei wouldn't say anything else – so, what's that important news? – said Naruto – Tenzo pulled three application forms – I have recommended you three for the Chunin Exams – Naruto fell from the log for the excitement. Hinata was taken aback, and Sasuke smirked. Naruto stood up, smiling broadly – Really, sensei? That's awesome! – said Naruto – These are the application forms. If you wish to participate, you need to deliver them to the Academy Room 301 by 16:00 on July 1 – Naruto and Sasuke rushed to take their application forms. Hinata took hers, although she didn't seem so sure about it – You must know that in order to participate, the whole team must show up – Tenzo said. Naruto and Sasuke looked at Hinata – Before you make a decision, I must tell you that I recommended you because I believe in you. I have seen your strength and progress. You have performed splendidly. Especially you, Hinata. You're not the same shy girl you were a few months ago. It's okay if you guys want to wait until next year if that's what you want. The exam is designed to make you fail. It is strenuous and demanding – Naruto interrupted his sensei – We can take it, sensei! It's not a big deal – Tenzo sighed – Naruto, please read the disclaimer of the application form – Naruto read it and then yelled – What?! We need to sign a consent form because we may die – Sasuke's eyes went wide open. Hinata gulped – That's correct, Naruto. In most Chunin Exams, some genins die. Honestly, I don't remember a single exam where nobody died – Naruto gulped – C'mon, Naruto, Hinata! We'll face more genins from other villages. That can't be worse than Zabuza and Haku! We've got this! – said Sasuke. Naruto smirked. Hinata still seemed to doubt – Oi, Hinata. If you want to wait until next year, we'll wait. It is okay. But Tenzo-sensei is right. You've become really strong. You saved us! – Tenzo smiled. Hinata looked at them, surprised. They were willing to pass their opportunity for her. They were right; she had fought samurais, she had fought a man with the Hyoton Release, and she had survived. She wanted to make her father proud. She remembered the way her father looked at her during the report briefing. He had told her later that day that he was proud she had managed to create her own variation of the gentle fist. She couldn't fail them – There is no need to wait for next year! – said Hinata, effusively. Naruto, Sasuke and Tenzo smiled – I guess that settles it. Don't be late on the exam day, or you'll be disqualified, and don't forget your applications. The exam is still two weeks away. You need to train in the meantime. Missions are forbidden for teams participating in the exam so they can focus on it – Team Seven seemed excited and anxious – what are we waiting for, sensei? Let's start with the training now! – said Naruto, followed by nods of Hinata and Sasuke – I'm afraid that won't be possible. I'll be going on a mission during the exams. I need to prepare for my mission – he was interrupted by his students – what? Who's going to help us train then? – asked Sasuke and Naruto, upset – There is no need to worry about that. A fellow ANBU will act as a temporary sensei while I'm gone. You'll meet him in two days at dawn in this training ground. Use these days to rest – said Tenzo. He was preparing to leave when he was interrupted by Sasuke – Oi, sensei! Who's that ANBU? What's his name? – Tenzo smiled – It is a surprise – said Tenzo as he disappeared in a cloud of smoke.
Namikaze Resicende: That Night
Kushina and Naruto were sitting at the table, waiting for Minato – You know, I spent the afternoon at the Hokage Tower today. You should've seen your dad talking about your mission all day long! – said Kushina as she took a sip from her tea. Naruto blushed and rubbed the back of his head – Really? What did he say? – asked Naruto – That I have the most incredible son – said Minato's voice as he appeared, thanks to hiraishin no jutsu, at the house entrance. Naruto looked at him and smiled. Minato took off his sandals and walked in – you really think so? – said Naruto – Of course I do! I'm sorry, Naruto if I haven't had the time to spend with you over the past two years – said Minato as he rubbed his hair – I promise that'll change! – Naruto blushed. Minato sat – Did you talk with Tenzo? – Naruto looked up happily – Yeah! We're taking the Chunin Exams! – said the blond boy – You'll need to train very hard, Naruto! – said Kushina as she served dinner. Naruto nodded – Gaara-kun and his siblings are taking the exam, too – said Minato. Naruto choked with his water – Really!? It's been so long since the last time I saw him! I can't wait! – suddenly, Naruto's mood changed – Oi, Dad. What's going on? – asked Naruto, staring at his plate – What do you mean, Naruto? – asked Minato as he stared at his son – Something bad is on the move. There is too much happening at the same time. Orochimaru, Mizuki-sensei, Takigakure, someone tried to kill Jiji. And now you sent sensei on a mission – Kushina seemed worried, whereas Minato looked proud – You and your friends are very perceptive, Naruto. Whatever's happening, you don't ... – Naruto interrupted – I know, I know. I don't need to worry. You and the council can handle it. But I can't help but feel that something bad is coming. Kurama's nervous, too – that caught Kushina and Minato with their guards down – What do you mean, Naruto? What did he tell you? – asked Kushina nervously - He said he could sense danger coming and that I should train harder to become stronger than the Shodaime Hokage. He said that I have someone new to protect and only someone of the Shodaime's caliber can stop what's coming – Minato was shocked – When did he tell you this, Naruto? – Naruto looked down – Last night, in my dream. Normally, he asks me not to say anything we talk about. But last night, he seemed nervous, even scared – Kushina felt the seal on her stomach itching. It looked like the Kyubi didn't like to be called "scared." Naruto continued – did he ask you to tell us? – asked Minato. Naruto shook his head – He didn't say exactly I should tell you what he said, but he didn't ask me NOT to tell you. I can't sense him angry. If he didn't want you to know, he would've already let me know to stop talking. Minato looked at Kushina. She shook her head. The Kyubi was at ease. It seemed that the Kyubi remained undisturbed, other than that little itch after Naruto said he was scared. Madara's influence was such that the Kyubi could feel the danger approaching. Minato bit his lip. Kushina rubbed her belly – Naruto, do you think he would allow me to speak with him? – Minato asked. Naruto shook his head – he said he wouldn't speak with anyone other than me – said Naruto. Naruto and Kushina were worried about Naruto – Hey, Naruto! Let's forget about that. Your Dad and I have great news! – said Kushina. Trying to cheer him up. Minato smiled – Your mom is right. You'll be delighted with the news – said Minato. The Kyubi had spoiled the news. He told Naruto he had someone new to protect. Naruto looked up and forced a smile. He was still troubled by everything that had happened – What is it? – said Naruto. Minato and Kushina stood next to each other. Kushina placed her hand on her belly – You're going to be a big brother, Naruto – Naruto's eyes lightened up with joy – Are you serious? You're not joking, right? – Of course, we're serious! – Naruto stood up and hugged his parents – Will it be a boy or a girl? Do you know the name yet? – Naruto then peered his head into his mother's belly – Oi! I'm your nii-san! My name is Naruto! Please, don't be a pain in the ass like Sasuke or Hanabi-chan! – Kushina chuckled. Suddenly, something clicked in Naruto's mind – This is what Kurama meant! He said I have someone new to protect! – Kushina rubbed his hair – Most likely. But do not worry, your dad's really strong, and you'll become an extraordinary shinobi! Like Hashirama-sama – said Kushina. Naruto nodded. Minato and Kushina couldn't sleep that night, thinking about Kurama's warning. They feared the worst.
Note: Naruto's Kyubi mode allows him to detect evil presences. It was stated in the manga that Mito could do the same. That's why I'm giving Kurama the ability to sense evil and danger.
