To avoid any confusion "Fourth Wing" is the first book in a series called "The Empyrean" by Rebecca Yarros. Trust me it's an awesome series and Ciel is generally interested in the plot only without the mature content being told by Tarryn. And Tarryn is talking about Kirara from Inuyasha when Sebastian interrupts her work lol.
Tarryn's POV
"Aren't you uncomfortable wearing that?" Bard greeted me as I sat down in the staff dining room for breakfast.
Unlike Mey-Rin, my daily attire wasn't dresses. On my first day on the job, Sebastian tried to convince me otherwise, but he ended up getting a smack on the head courtesy of yours truly. My attire consisted of a simple shirt along with a vest, dark-colored pants, and boots. Today, I wore a dark blue long-sleeved shirt with a black vest and matching black pants and boots.
Now, mind you; I wasn't wearing a corset, but the bra I had been wearing when I arrived, or it was a breast brand. I refused to wear those damn corsets unless necessary. As a compromise, whenever the manor had guests or if I had to accompany Ciel with Sebastian outside of the estate, I would wear a corset and dress.
"Wearing those bloody corsets is uncomfortable," I replied to the chef sitting down.
"True that is!" Mey-Rin agreed.
"If you say so" Bard muttered before giving me breakfast and coffee.
"If you don't mind me asking, Ms. Tarryn, are you betrothed?"
"Oi! Don't be asking her that!" Bard snapped at Finny who blushed.
"Relax, Bard, it's fine," I reassured the chef before sending Finny a wink. "No betrothed at the moment"
Tanaka chose that moment to reply with his signature laugh.
"Well, the new season is coming soon. Maybe you'll find a suitor or two," Finny pointed out.
Unlikely my dragon growled. We're not of nobility
The bell from the Ciel's bedroom rang signaling the young earl was awake. Right on cue, Sebastian entered the dining hall. At seeing their superior both Finny and Mey-Rin took off to start working to avoid a chewing out. Bard didn't need to start making Ciel's food until after he had his morning tea so he remained seated.
Sebastian told me good morning and I replied with a wave. Hopefully, the butler got the memo not to bother me while I was eating. I could be a real bitch if my morning routine was interrupted. Thankfully the hot butler paid no mind and left with Ciel's tea in tow.
"He didn't look too happy there," Bard said to me.
"Sebastian knows better than to interrupt me when I'm bloody eating breakfast and having my coffee"
"I wish I had your bravery Tarryn, Sebastian can be scary at times"
"Maybe it's my Scottish stubbornness" I joked with a smirk. That made Bard smirk and Tanaka found it funny as well.
Once breakfast was done I took care of the dishes before heading out to start my rounds. This morning my assignment was helping Finny out. Just simple weeding and whatnot. Since arriving at the manor a month ago, the comedy relief trio hardly had any accidents, thanks to my supervision.
And I had no intention of that streak being broken today. I was so focused on my work that I almost missed Sebastian clearing his throat.
"What is it butler?" I demanded while still focused on my weeding.
"Do you have a moment?"
I sighed before standing up and gave him a look of disapproval.
"You had a bit of an attitude this morning Tarryn"
Is he serious?
"You know I like peace when at breakfast, butler," I reminded him. "Plus my mouth was bloody full of food when you told me good morning, and if I recall correctly a lady doesn't speak with her mouth full"
"As a lady shouldn't use foul language"
The demon wore that damn smile when he said that. Okay, if he wanted to play, then so could I.
"Tell me, butler, what is your opinion of demon cats?"
Immediately Sebastian's eyes sparkled at the mention of felines.
"I'm afraid I haven't crossed paths with one. Do you know any?"
I smirked.
"I do but I'm not telling you about her unless you earn it"
Finny burst out laughing and Sebastian pouted before admitting defeat and let me resume my work. My next project was keeping an eye on Mey-Rin while she dusted her assigned areas for the day. To pass the time, I helped her clean, and things were running smoothly until the sound of an explosion made the mansion shake.
"Uh oh, looks like Bard is in trouble. He is," Mey-Rin stated.
"I'll go see what he blew up" I reassured her and headed in the direction of the kitchens.
Bard was covered in soot when I found him.
"What the hell happened?" I demanded.
"Nothing! I just wanted a smoke!"
"Dude, if you want a cigarette, do it outside, not in the damn kitchens," I scolded him. "It's a good thing you didn't bloody burn the whole manor down"
"I'll keep that in mind"
"Bardroy, she's right. Smoking isn't advisable indoors," Sebastian agreed. The demon looked displeased at the chef's mayhem. Bard apologized before getting back to work.
"By the way, Tarryn, we are having company this afternoon," Sebastian explained as we left the kitchens.
"Who is coming?"
I was curious I met Madame Red but no others.
"The young master's cousin Lady Elizabeth Midford"
Now, this will be interesting, I thought.
Elizabeth was very much disliked in the anime but I didn't mind her. Hell, she wasn't even engaged to Ciel, which was a huge shocker. Before my arrival, Elizabeth had fallen for another guy, and Ciel didn't mind breaking off their engagement. He was happy for his cousin and still looked forward to her visits.
Sebastian wore his damned smirk again and I flipped him off.
"Shall I assist you in dressing?"
"You're a pain in the ass, you know that? And I can have Mey-Rin help me thanks"
My face was red.
"Very well and when you're done getting dressed the young master would like for you to head to the study"
"Noted"
Back in my room, I ranted to Mey-Rin about Sebastian's teasing as she helped me get into the damned undergarments from this century.
"Maybe he likes you" Mey-Rin suggested wagging her eyebrows mischievously.
"Unlikely"
I then let loose a color string of profanities as she tightened the corset. The dress that I chose was another short-sleeved one. It was indigo with gold embroidery on it.
"Are you sure you want your hair like that?"
My hair was in a single braid that hung off to the side. I looked like Katniss Everdeen. I flashed Mey-Rin a smirk and thanked her before leaving my room. I didn't want to keep Ciel waiting, and hopefully, he approved of my attire.
The door to the study was open and Ciel looked up when I knocked.
"You look nice Tarryn come on in"
"I hope I'm not interrupting anything"
"I need a break from my work and I'm interested in how Fourth Wing continues"
Since he was so interested in the series I didn't mind telling him how the story played out verbally but excluded the mature content.
"You'll beat me again, you know," I pointed out as Ciel set up the chess board.
"It takes practice" he reassured me. "You did manage to win a few games back"
"Or did you let me win?"
Ciel chuckled and I took a seat across from him. As we started I continued from where I left off from Fourth Wing. It was the class where the main characters saw the projections of the dragons up for grabs. I told Ciel each color of the dragons in the books and what kind of breeds there were.
"Wait there's a black dragon?"
I chuckled as I snatched one of his pawns.
"Yes but he's not willing to bond"
"I think I know where this is going"
"Patience, my lord, and you will find out; now I'm curious what color dragon would you want?"
"A navy blue Daggertail like Sgaeyl"
Ciel liked Sgayel. Not only because of her coloring but also her personality.
"Maybe at one point, I'll let you experience what dragon flight is"
That made the young earl smirk.
"Sebastian would have a fit"
"You would be safe my lord, I meant what I told Sebastian no harm will befall you in my presence, you made sure I was looked after when I was sick, and in turn, I'll protect you as needed"
Ciel gave me a genuine smile before adding one more thing.
"You can call me Ciel when it's just us Tarryn"
"As you wish, Ciel"
I then swore when he took my damned queen and he chuckled.
