Chapter 17

The girls strolled through the winding paths behind the college, their dresses shimmering in the soft glow of the evening light. The air was cool and carried the faint scent of blooming flowers, promising an enchanting evening. They reached the back of the campus, where the party was being hosted in the expansive gardens.

The gardens were a masterpiece of magic and nature intertwined. Vines of glowing flowers spiraled up ornate silver trellises, their petals pulsing gently like tiny lanterns. The paths were lined with stones that seemed to sparkle as though dusted with stardust. Above, enchanted fireflies flitted about, leaving trails of golden light in their wake. In the center, a large fountain sparkled under the moonlight, its water cascading in silvery streams that seemed to hum with soft, melodic notes. The arches framing the entrance to the garden shimmered with protective runes, their shapes glowing faintly in the twilight.

Standing under one such arch was Mei, the bubbly girl Rukia had met upon her arrival at the college. Her bright green eyes sparkled like emeralds, and her short black hair was tied up in a stylish ponytail that accentuated her features. She wore a lovely black and white dress with delicate lace accents, and beside her stood a young man with short blonde hair and an equally bright smile. His sharp black-and-white suit complemented Mei's attire, making them look perfectly matched, as if they were the hosts of a grand gala.

"Greetings, girls! Please state your names—it can just be your first name—and once you enter, you'll receive your grades," Mei announced warmly. Her voice carried an air of excitement and welcome.

Orihime stepped forward first, her movements graceful as she stated her name. The moment she passed through the arch, she disappeared as if swallowed by thin air.

Rukia's eyes widened in surprise. "What just happened?" she asked, unable to mask her curiosity.

The young man chuckled softly. "It's a protection veil. To anyone outside, the garden appears empty, but inside, it's bustling with life and magic. It keeps uninvited guests from finding their way in."

Mei nodded in agreement, smiling brightly. "Thank you Ido. Now go enjoy yourselves, girls! Have fun tonight."

Tatsuki was next. She confidently stated her name and walked through the veil, vanishing just like Orihime. Senna followed, her voice light and musical as she spoke her name before stepping through and disappearing.

Rukia stepped forward, taking a deep breath to calm herself. Just as she was about to speak, Mei reached out and gently stopped her.

"Rukia, how are you adjusting?" Mei asked kindly, her eyes filled with genuine concern.

Rukia smiled warmly. "I'm adjusting well. My friends have been such a huge support, and I'm truly happy to be here. At first, I was upset about not being with Hisana, but I think this has been good for both of us. She's thriving, and I couldn't be happier for her."

Mei's face lit up with a smile, and she wrapped Rukia in a tight hug. "I'm so glad to hear that! You're doing wonderfully, and if you ever need anything, Ido and I will be right here."

Rukia returned the hug and nodded. "Thank you so much, Mei—and you too, Ido."

With that, she stated her name clearly and stepped forward. The veil shimmered as she passed through it, and the world on the other side took her breath away.

The garden was even more magical than she had imagined. Twinkling fairy lights floated above like constellations brought down to earth. The flowers weren't just blooming; they were alive with vibrant energy, their petals shifting colors with the music that seemed to emanate from the air itself. Butterflies with iridescent wings flitted about, leaving trails of sparkling dust in their wake. Ornate tables covered in shimmering silks were arranged around the fountain, where students mingled, their laughter blending harmoniously with the fountain's soft melody.

Rukia stood in awe, taking in the beauty of it all. It felt as though she had stepped into a dream.

A blank piece of paper floated gracefully through the air, stopping just in front of Rukia as if inviting her to take it. She glanced around, noticing her friends already engrossed in the papers they held, their eyes scanning the contents with a mixture of excitement and concentration.

Hesitantly, Rukia reached out and took the paper in her hands. The moment her fingers touched it, an elegant script began to materialize, her grades appearing one by one as if written by an invisible hand. She held her breath, scanning the results, and a bright smile spread across her face. All A's. The long hours of study and preparation had paid off, and a wave of pride and relief washed over her.

Beside her, Orihime let out an excited squeal, clutching her paper to her chest. "All A's!" she exclaimed, practically glowing with happiness.

Senna and Tatsuki exchanged grins as they looked at their own papers. "Not bad," Senna said, her tone light. "A mix of A's and B's for me!"

"Same here," Tatsuki added, though she didn't seem overly concerned.

The group shared a collective moment of celebration, laughing and cheering softly for one another. Rukia glanced around and noticed that some students had let their papers drift from their hands, the sheets vanishing in midair as if swallowed by the magical atmosphere. She followed suit, letting her own paper go and watching as it disappeared into the air like a wisp of smoke.

"Don't worry," Orihime said reassuringly, noticing Rukia's curious expression. "They'll be sent to our dorms."

Tatsuki stretched her arms over her head with a dramatic sigh. "Can we eat now? All this excitement has made me hungry."

Senna nodded enthusiastically. "Yeah, I'm hella hungry."

Orihime chuckled. "Well then, I'll go find us a table. You girls can head over to the buffet and grab some food."

"I'll come with you," Rukia offered quickly. She didn't want Orihime to wander off alone, even if it was just a short trip.

Orihime smiled warmly, appreciating the company. The two walked together through the garden, marveling at the glittering lights and the soft hum of music that floated on the air. They chose a cozy table near the far back, where the view of the entire gathering was perfect. Orihime set her bag down and took a seat, gesturing for Rukia to join her.

"Oh, isn't this magical?" Orihime said, gazing around in awe. "It's so beautiful."

Rukia nodded, taking in the enchanting scene—the glowing flowers, the sparkling fountain, and the carefree laughter of their fellow students. But as her eyes wandered, she noticed something odd. The guys weren't there. In fact, there weren't any guys at all.

"Where are the boys?" Rukia asked curiously, glancing back toward the entrance as if expecting them to appear.

Orihime smiled knowingly. "The professors are giving them a speech," she explained. "It's probably about their responsibilities as our guardians. Ido must have gotten his talk earlier since he and Mei had to help set everything up."

Rukia tilted her head, processing the explanation. It made sense. She could imagine the professors emphasizing the importance of their roles, and it struck her how much weight the guys must carry in protecting them.

Before she could dwell on it further, Tatsuki and Senna returned, each balancing plates piled high with food. Senna carried two plates, while Tatsuki managed three with practiced ease.

Rukia blinked in astonishment as Tatsuki set her plates down, looking ready to grab even more. "Tatsuki," Orihime scolded gently, "eat what you have first, then go back for seconds."

Tatsuki shot Orihime a mildly annoyed look but relented, plopping into the seat beside Senna with a dramatic huff. Senna and Rukia couldn't help but laugh as Tatsuki grumbled under her breath, picking up her fork and digging in.

From across the table, Rukia caught a whiff of Tatsuki's food—rich, spicy, and almost fiery in intensity. Meanwhile, Senna's plate contained foods with an almost ethereal darkness to them, emitting a faint, shadowy aura. Orihime shivered slightly as the eerie essence from Senna's meal seemed to linger in the air.

"Soooo," Senna began, drawing out the word mischievously. "Rukia, Orihime, aren't you two going to grab something to eat?"

Orihime beamed. "Absolutely! Come on, Rukia. The buffet is amazing—you'll love it."

Rukia stood, allowing Orihime to lead the way. As they walked, she glanced back at their table, feeling a sense of warmth and camaraderie. Despite everything going on, they were together, and that was all that mattered.

Orihime drifted off in the opposite direction, leaving Rukia to explore the buffet on her own. Rukia's eyes widened in amazement as she approached the spread. It wasn't anything like the typical cafeteria setup; this was a feast, meticulously arranged with an array of dishes that seemed to represent every season and magical realm. The sheer variety was overwhelming, and the enchanted glow of some of the food made it all the more surreal.

Grabbing a plate, she realized just how large it was, almost comically so, but it seemed fitting for such an extravagant setup. Her attention was immediately drawn to the Ice Realm section, where frosted foods glistened like treasures beneath a pale blue light. Enthralled, she selected an appetizer: Frosted Berry Bruschetta—crispy bread topped with glistening forest berries encrusted in tiny frost crystals, a dollop of chilled cream cheese, and a sprinkle of mint. Each piece sparkled with a magical sheen, as if they were miniature works of art.

Moving on, Rukia explored the Light Fae section, where she couldn't resist taking a small sampling of everything. From delicate flower-infused pastries to golden fruit tarts, the light, ethereal quality of the food was irresistible.

She paused at the Fall section, the warm, earthy scents drawing her in. Her plate quickly filled with a few staples: Roasted Turkey Breast, perfectly tender and seasoned with fall herbs, served with a side of tart cranberry sauce, and Butternut Squash Gratin, layers of thinly sliced squash baked with enchanted cheese and a touch of sage, its aroma rich and inviting.

Rukia moved on to the Spring section, where the vibrancy of the dishes caught her attention. She added a serving of Enchanted Asparagus Risotto, creamy and bursting with the freshness of spring herbs, and a slice of Lemon Poppy Seed Cake, its light glaze shining under the magical lanterns overhead.

Finally, she stopped at the Summer section, where the warmth and cheer of the season were reflected in the food. The Sunflower Seed Bread, freshly baked with a hint of honey, practically called her name. She grabbed a glass of Enchanted Iced Tea, the cold drink infused with summer herbs and enchanted honey, and marveled at how everything fit on her plate without toppling over.

As she turned, Orihime skipped up to her, her smile as bright as the magical lights around them.

"Wow, Rukia, your plate looks so enticing!" Orihime exclaimed, her eyes wide with admiration.

Rukia glanced at Orihime's plate, noting its vibrant greens and colorful arrangement of fruits and vegetables. It was clearly the healthiest-looking plate she'd seen so far. The pink drink in Orihime's hand shimmered faintly, catching Rukia's attention.

"What's that?" Rukia asked, gesturing to the drink.

"Oh, it's a Strawberry Nectar Elixir," Orihime said cheerfully. "You should try it next time—it's delicious!"

The two made their way back to the table, where Rukia was greeted with the sight of Tatsuki already halfway through her third plate of food.

"Seriously?" Rukia said with a raised brow, watching as Tatsuki eyed the buffet as if debating whether to go for a fourth.

Tatsuki shrugged unapologetically. "What can I say? I've got an appetite."

Senna laughed, nudging Tatsuki. "You might as well just move the buffet over here at this rate."

The girls had just settled in and started eating when a loud commotion erupted near the entrance. Heads turned as the guys entered the hall, their boisterous voices echoing across the space. Each of them was dressed in their combat outfits, and it didn't take long for the chaos to ensue as girls rushed to greet their assigned guardians.

Orihime stood up almost immediately, her face lighting up when she spotted Uryu. She darted toward him, clearly thrilled. Uryu, looking as composed as ever in his immaculate combat uniform, gave a small wave before being engulfed by Orihime's rapid chatter.

"Geez, can those two just date already?" Tatsuki muttered, shaking her head.

Rukia chuckled, amused by how easily Orihime could bring out a softer side in Uryu. Senna, on the other hand, burst into laughter, thoroughly enjoying the scene.

Rukia's attention was drawn to the buffet, where Renji was stacking an impressive five plates of food with practiced ease. His long red hair was tied back in a ponytail, and the intricate tattoos on his body were clearly visible against his combat gear. He carried the plates with remarkable balance as he approached their table, a confident grin on his face.

"Hey," he greeted casually, setting one of the plates in front of Tatsuki along with a red drink.

Tatsuki arched her brow. "Renji, you clean up nice. Almost like a real gentleman. Oh and look at this you smell nice as well."

"Thanks," Renji replied with a smirk. "And you clean up well too. You must be hungry after starving yourself and not eating."

Tatsuki snorted, grabbing her fork. "Agreed."

Renji joined in her laughter before digging into his own food. Moments later, Chad arrived, carrying a single plate and a small vial of dark liquid. He greeted the girls warmly and handed the vial to Senna.

"For you," he said simply, his deep voice calm but sincere.

Senna accepted it, her cheeks tinged with pink. "Thanks, Chad. You… um, you look nice. Slicked-back hair suits you."

Chad grinned, the subtle compliment clearly not lost on him. "And you look amazing, Senna."

Senna rolled her eyes, though her blush deepened as she took a sip of the black liquid. The two exchanged shy smiles before focusing on their meals, the group settling into a lively rhythm as laughter and conversation filled the air.

Rukia savored her food, her eyes scanning the room as if searching. Almost on cue, Ichigo appeared, balancing three plates in his hands with practiced ease. He made his way to her and sat down beside her, his orange, fiery hair slicked back in a way that gave him a polished yet effortlessly confident look. His usual smug grin played on his lips as he handed her a drink, much to her relief—she had been running low.

"Rukia, you look beautiful," Ichigo said casually, his tone warm but sincere.

Rukia's cheeks flushed a soft pink as she ducked her head slightly. "Thank you… and you look nice as well," she replied, glancing up at him.

Ichigo's grin softened into a genuine smile. "Well, thank you."

The two exchanged a comfortable look before joining in the group's conversation, the atmosphere light and filled with laughter.

After some time, the hall doors opened, and Hisana arrived, drawing everyone's attention. She was nearly an hour and a half late, but her arrival was worth the wait. Her long hair, which was already stunning, now flowed down her back in cascading waves, even more luminous and beautiful than before. She wore a strapless black leather dress that hugged her figure, showing off far more than she typically would, but the daring look suited her. Her makeup was immaculate, accentuating her icy, ethereal beauty. She truly looked like the embodiment of an ice queen.

Her friends, Yui and Nozomi, followed closely behind, equally dazzling. Yui wore a floor-length pink dress adorned with intricate floral patterns. Her hair was elegantly styled up, and her soft makeup added a radiant charm to her features. Nozomi, on the other hand, sported a flowing blue skirt with water-inspired patterns and a shimmering strapless top that reflected blues and greens. Her vibrant green hair was left loose, and even with light makeup, she exuded a quiet elegance.

Despite their combat outfits, the guardians didn't look out of place beside the girls. Their sharp appearances complimented their partners' beauty effortlessly. The group merged into lively conversation and continued eating, the energy around the table growing warmer and more animated.

As the music started, Hisana's eyes lit up with excitement. She let out a delighted squeal and immediately grabbed Byakuya's hand. Though he hesitated at first, the reluctant smile tugging at the corners of his lips gave him away, and he let her lead him to the dance floor.

Yui followed suit, pulling Shu along as they disappeared into the crowd. Nozomi and Hanza exchanged a knowing look before quietly slipping toward the back of the room, choosing to observe the festivities and talk in private.

Rukia, meanwhile, began to feel restless. She shifted in her seat, realizing with a pang of urgency that she needed to use the restroom. Standing up, she excused herself, only to find her friends rising alongside her.

"We go in groups, Rukia. Plus, we need to touch up our makeup anyway," Orihime said cheerfully, grabbing her bag.

Rukia couldn't help but smile at her friend's unwavering enthusiasm. As the girls followed, their guardians stood as well.

"Where are you all going?" Tatsuki asked, raising a brow.

Renji smirked, shrugging. "Bathroom. Gotta make sure we look good too, you know."

The girls laughed, and with the group now together, they left the table. On their way out, Mei and Ido, who were managing the event, called after them.

"Bathrooms are down the corridor to the left," Mei instructed.

"And hurry back!" Ido added. "We're about to start karaoke!"

The group shared amused looks as they headed down the hall, ready to freshen up before returning for the next round of festivities.

Rukia hurried to the restroom, her urgency growing with each step as laughter trailed behind her. She hadn't realized how badly she needed to go until the bathroom was finally in sight. Relieved, she took care of business and then headed to the sink, washing her hands quickly.

"Hold still, Rukia," Orihime said gently, stepping closer to help reapply her makeup.

Senna leaned into the mirror, touching up her eyeliner with precision, while Tatsuki casually swiped on a fresh coat of lipstick. The atmosphere was lighthearted, the girls chatting and teasing each other as they finished.

When they exited the restroom, the guys were already waiting for them in the hallway.

"Finally," Renji groaned, throwing up his hands. "Geez, women always take—"

A small burst of flames licked up toward him, cutting him off mid-sentence. Renji jumped back with a startled yelp, glaring at Tatsuki, who smirked and blew on her fingers mockingly.

They began making their way back to the hall, but Ichigo suddenly stopped, his head snapping toward the corridor. His eyes narrowed, and he raised a hand to signal the group to pause.

"What's wrong?" Uryu asked, stepping forward. "What do you hear?"

Ichigo tilted his head slightly, his keen senses honing in on something distant. "Footsteps," he said, his tone low. "They're heading toward the headmaster's office, moving past the classrooms… going in and out of them."

Rukia stiffened, a chill running down her spine. "It's Loly, Menoly, and Luppi," she said, her voice trembling slightly. "Someone tipped me off earlier that they'd be here. I forgot to tell you guys."

Orihime looked apologetic. "With everything that's been happening, it must have slipped our minds."

"Damn it," Renji muttered, clenching his fists. "Ichigo?"

"We can't fight in the school," Chad said, his voice steady but firm.

"And we can't let them get to the Black Quill," Senna countered, her expression darkening.

Ichigo turned to the girls. "You all head back. We'll handle this."

Tatsuki immediately bristled, crossing her arms. "Hell no."

Ichigo growled low in his throat, the sound enough to make even Tatsuki falter for a moment. The tension was thick as the girls instinctively took a small step back. Ichigo exhaled slowly, reigning in his frustration.

"Fine," he said sharply. "But keep up, and don't get in the way."

Before Tatsuki could retort, the guys were gone, moving so quickly it was as if they'd vanished into thin air.

"What the hell?" Rukia whispered, her eyes wide.

Senna huffed, snapping her fingers. "Damn it."

Orihime quickly created a protective shield around the girls, and within moments, they felt a strange pull—a magical force drawing them forward. It was disorienting, but they soon found themselves catching up to the guys, who had taken up positions at the end of the corridor. Chad raised a hand to his mouth, signaling for silence.

"Shit," Luppi's voice echoed from up ahead. "Where the hell is the headmaster's office?"

"Luppi, shut up," Loly hissed. "We have to find the Quill, or we're dead. This is our last chance."

"Maybe try the big door at the end of the corridor, you idiots!" Menoly snapped.

Rukia's heart pounded in her chest as she watched Ichigo, Renji, and Chad move like shadows, stalking up the corridor with deadly intent. Uryu exchanged a glance with Orihime, who gave a subtle nod before Uryu levitated silently into the air, gliding forward with precision.

The reality of the situation hit Rukia like a wave of icy water. This wasn't a training mission. There was no instructor to intervene, no simulation to snap them back to safety. This was real. Her fear began to claw at her, but she forced herself to focus.

"Hey, guys," Luppi's voice wavered. "Did it just get colder?"

Before anyone could react, the air shifted violently. In a blur of motion, Loly, Menoly, and Luppi were suddenly in their faces.

Rukia gasped, choking as Luppi's hand clamped around her throat. Beside her, Orihime struggled, caught in Luppi's other grip. Menoly had Senna pinned by the neck, her nails digging into her skin, while Loly had Tatsuki in a headlock, her cold eyes glaring directly at the guys.

"Attack us," Loly sneered, tightening her grip, "and they die."
