Chapter 19
Rukia groaned as the soft morning light filtered through her window, cutting through the haze of sleep. Her hand fumbled for the blanket, pulling it closer as she tried to retreat back into the comfort of her bed. Turning over, she bumped into something—or rather, someone. Still half-asleep, she assumed it was Hisana and let out a contented sigh, cuddling up to the solid warmth beside her. A sleepy smile tugged at her lips as she nestled closer.
But then something clicked.
Her eyes snapped open, and her breath hitched. This was not Hisana.
Rukia's gaze traveled up the broad chest in front of her. The realization hit her like a bolt of lightning as her eyes took in the unmistakable form of Ichigo lying next to her. He was shirtless, his toned physique on full display, and he was wearing only a pair of combat pants that hung low on his hips.
Her heart raced as embarrassment surged through her. She scrambled back, cheeks turning scarlet, the coldness of her ice powers already creeping into the room as her emotions spiraled.
Ichigo stirred, blinking groggily before his amber eyes locked onto hers. "What's going on?" he mumbled, his voice thick with sleep.
"Ichigo!" Rukia squeaked, her voice an octave higher than usual. Her hands flew to her face in a futile attempt to hide her mortification.
Her ice powers reacted instinctively to her turmoil. Frost crept along the bed, and she noticed with growing horror that his leg was icing over.
Ichigo sat up abruptly, shivering slightly as the cold bit into his skin. His brows furrowed as he held up his hands, palms out, in a placating gesture. "Calm down, Rukia," he said, his voice low and steady. "You're just flustered."
"Flustered?!" she sputtered, her voice trembling. "Why are you in my bed?!"
Ichigo opened his mouth to answer, but before he could, her eyes darted down. His combat pants had shifted lower, and her brain short-circuited. "Oh my god!" she squealed, throwing her arms up in a panic.
The temperature in the room plummeted. Snow swirled around them, carried by a sudden, icy wind. Ichigo winced as frost began to form along his arms. "Rukia!" he shouted over the growing chaos. "You're freezing everything!"
"I—I'm not doing this on purpose!" she cried, her face crimson as she backed into the corner of the room.
Realizing the situation was escalating, Ichigo quickly rose from the bed and moved toward the door. "Okay, okay, I'm leaving!" he said, hands raised in surrender.
The moment Ichigo left the room, the door burst open, and Tatsuki, Orihime, and Senna tumbled inside, slipping and skidding on the icy floor. Orihime, dressed in a short, floral tea-length dress with puffed sleeves, nearly landed face-first before catching herself on the bedframe. She scrambled over to Rukia, her wide eyes full of concern.
"Rukia! Are you okay? Are you hurt?" Orihime asked, her voice laced with worry as she tried not to lose her footing again.
Senna floated just above the floor, her arms crossed. Her outfit—a purple short skirt paired with a cropped, flowing top that shimmered like twilight—fluttered slightly as she hovered, clearly unwilling to risk slipping again.
Meanwhile, Tatsuki crouched on the floor, her leggings and long-sleeved athletic shirt giving her enough grip to move carefully. She extended her hands, releasing a gentle warmth into the air. The ice began to melt steadily, the chill receding but not completely overwhelming Rukia.
Tatsuki smirked, her eyes sparkling with mischief. "So, what happened? Was Ichigo naked again?"
Rukia's face flushed scarlet as she spun away, crossing her arms defensively. "Shut up, Tatsuki!" she snapped. "He—ugh, I don't want to talk about it. I'm going to take a shower."
Tatsuki snickered as she watched Rukia stomp toward the door. "Alright, alright, don't freeze me over."
As Rukia flung the door open, she froze in place. Standing just outside was Renji, shirtless, his muscular torso on full display. His bright red hair was tied back, and his usual confident grin faded as his crimson eyes darted over her disheveled state.
"Rukia," he started, lifting a hand to knock belatedly. "Are you okay? You look—"
Before he could finish, Rukia let out a startled scream. The room's temperature plummeted again, and frost began creeping up Renji's legs. His body stiffened as ice formed along his arms. "Hey! What the hell?" Renji yelped, shivering.
Ichigo, now wearing his black combat shirt and looking mildly exasperated, appeared behind Renji. "Move," he said, gripping Renji's shoulder. His hands glowed faintly with warmth, and the ice instantly melted. Without missing a beat, he pushed Renji aside and stepped into the doorway.
"Rukia, stop freaking out!" Ichigo said, his voice firm but not unkind.
Rukia backed away, shaking her head, her cheeks impossibly red. "I—I'm not freaking out!" she stammered, her hands waving in protest even as frost began to swirl in the air again.
Ichigo sighed, stepping forward and scooping her up into his arms with ease. "That's it. You're coming outside before you turn this place into the Arctic."
Rukia squirmed in his grasp, her protests muffled as she tried to wriggle free. "Put me down!" she hissed, mortified.
"Not until you calm down," Ichigo replied evenly, carrying her out of the room and out of the dorm. Once outside, he finally set her down on the cool stone floor. She crossed her arms, looking anywhere but at him, her face still burning.
"What is wrong with you?" Ichigo asked, tilting his head.
Rukia bit her lip, her gaze darting to the ground. "I—I'm sorry," she mumbled. "I'm just not used to, um, male nudeness."
Ichigo blinked before pinching the bridge of his nose with a sigh. "Right. I get it. But you need to get a grip, Rukia. You're still learning to control your powers, and that's fine, but most of us can't handle ice for long. Tatsuki, Renji and I are fire elementals, and you nearly froze him solid."
Rukia nodded, biting back a groan of frustration. "I know, I know. I'm sorry I'll try to reel it in."
"Good," Ichigo said, his voice softening. "Now, go shower and get dressed. The whole student body got a mandatory meeting in the auditorium soon. I'm guessing it's about last night."
Her eyes widened in alarm. "Are we going to get in trouble?"
Ichigo shrugged. "No we shouldn't but we need to get going soon."
With a sigh, Rukia turned and headed back to her room, waving to the guys as they left and made their way to their dorms. Renji stopped to apologize to Rukia before leaving which made her feel nice inside. Once inside, she realized she was still wearing her dress from the night before. Huffing, she grabbed a change of clothes—a pair of snug jeans and an oversized black band shirt she had stolen from Hisana ages ago—before heading into the bathroom.
The cold water from the shower hit her skin like a refreshing jolt, and she sighed heavily, letting the tension ease from her body. Thoughts swirled in her head as she washed up, ranging from her embarrassing lack of control to the realization that she still had so much to learn. She resolved then and there to visit the Glacierheart Expanse after the assembly, determined to figure things out on her own.
When she emerged from the bathroom, her damp hair tied up into a messy bun, she found Tatsuki lounging on the couch in sleek black leggings and a loose gray athletic top. Orihime twirled in her tea-length dress, humming softly, while Senna, perched cross-legged on a chair, adjusted the hem of her skirt and fiddled with her shimmering top.
"Finally," Tatsuki teased. "Thought you froze yourself in there."
Rukia rolled her eyes and grabbed her bag. "Let's just go. We're going to be late."
The girls made their way to the cafeteria, weaving through the bustling crowd of students grabbing food to go. The aroma of freshly baked bread and sizzling eggs filled the air as trays clattered and students chatted animatedly about the events of the night. Plates in hand, the girls headed to the massive auditorium, its towering walls and high ceilings giving the space an almost cathedral-like quality. Rows of seats stretched into the distance, with a second-floor balcony looming above, capable of holding thousands of students.
Choosing seats near the back of the lower level, the girls settled in as the guys soon joined them. Tatsuki reluctantly tore off a piece of her jumbo breakfast burrito to share with Renji, who teased her with a grin. Orihime shyly passed half her strawberry crepe to Uryu, who accepted it with a small, appreciative smile. Senna, ever thoughtful, had brought a plate for Chad, who accepted it with a grateful nod.
Rukia glanced at her own plate of fae food—delicate herb omelets, sparkling fruit slices, and a pastry dusted with edible frost. She was grateful that her meal could be enjoyed by anyone, regardless of magical alignment. Offering a piece of the omelet to Ichigo, she smiled as he took it and muttered a quick "thanks" before digging in. The group ate together, the warmth of their camaraderie momentarily easing the tension from the previous night's chaos.
It wasn't long before the professors and the headmaster arrived, stepping onto the stage. The room fell silent as Headmaster Yamamoto, clad in flowing robes that shimmered with the weight of authority, moved to the podium. His presence alone seemed to command the room, and when he cleared his throat, all murmurs ceased.
"Students," Yamamoto began, his deep voice echoing through the vast auditorium, "it appears there was an altercation last night resulting in significant damage to the academy's roof. While our investigation is ongoing, classes on Monday are canceled to allow for repairs and a thorough review. Consider yourselves fortunate." He paused, scanning the crowd with his piercing gaze. "Mei has confirmed that all students were accounted for during the incident, suggesting this may have been the work of an old student playing a foolish prank. Families have been informed. Should you wish to visit home over the weekend, you are free to do so. Dismissed."
As students began filing out, Rukia's thoughts churned. Mei knew we weren't at the party when it happened... I need to talk to her when I get the chance.
Outside the auditorium, the group lingered. Renji broke the silence. "What was that about?"
Ichigo shrugged, his expression unreadable. "No idea. But no one got in trouble."
Uryu adjusted his glasses and stepped forward. "Ichigo, Renji, Chad, we've been summoned to the Fire Realm. Urgent family matters."
Ichigo frowned. "Any idea what for?"
Renji exchanged a glance with him. "Does it matter? When the summons come, we have to go."
Chad let out a small sigh, glancing at Senna. She smiled reassuringly. "Don't worry about me. I'll head to the Fae Realm to visit my sister. Nobody's going to mess with a dark fae high priestess." Chad nodded, his shoulders relaxing.
Uryu turned to Orihime, who pouted slightly but smiled. "I'll be fine. I'll head to the Mystic Forest. My brother should be there—he's always researching something."
Orihime quickly hugged Uryu before stepping back, her eyes twinkling with love. Renji turned to Tatsuki, who shrugged. "Lava Falls." Renji nodded, satisfied with her answer.
Finally, Ichigo looked at Rukia, his gaze firm but warm. "What about you?"
Rukia forced a smile. "I'll be fine. I'll just head to the library and catch up on research." It wasn't entirely a lie, but not the full truth either.
Ichigo gave her a skeptical look but eventually nodded. "Be safe."
With a snap of his fingers, a fiery red portal shimmered into existence. The guys said their goodbyes, stepping through one by one. Senna hugged the girls tightly before creating her own portal, a swirl of shadows and shimmering purple, and Orihime followed suit, leaving behind a glistening, pastel-hued portal.
Tatsuki turned to Rukia as the last portal disappeared. "You're not going to the library, are you?"
Rukia blinked, caught off guard. "How do you—?"
Tatsuki smirked. "I can tell you're lying. So, where are you actually going?"
Rukia sighed, pulling her aside to avoid the remaining students. "I'm going to the Glacierheart Expanse to learn about my parents."
Tatsuki tilted her head. "Alone?"
"Yes. I know you guys can't handle the cold like I can. I don't want to put anyone in danger."
Tatsuki crossed her arms, her smirk growing. "Nice try, but I'm coming with you."
"No way," Rukia protested, shaking her head. "You're a fire spirit. You'll freeze."
Tatsuki rolled her eyes. "I run at over a hundred degrees. I'll be fine for a while, especially since I had a big breakfast." she added with a mischievous grin, "Lava Falls isn't going anywhere besides I don't feel like possibly dealing with my brother anyway."
Rukia hesitated, torn between relief and guilt. "You're sure?"
"Positive. Now, let's head out before I change my mind," Tatsuki said, determination and playfulness lighting her eyes.
Rukia couldn't help but smile. "Alright. Let's do this."
Rukia led Tatsuki through the quiet, echoing halls of the library. The soft shuffle of their footsteps was the only sound as they made their way to the back, past towering bookshelves laden with ancient tomes and scrolls. The air smelled faintly of parchment and ink, and the dim, golden light from the sconces created dancing shadows. Tatsuki, trailing behind Rukia, glanced around uneasily.
"Why are we at the library?" Tatsuki finally asked, her voice cutting through the silence.
Rukia didn't answer immediately. Instead, she stopped in front of a seemingly ordinary wall of books. Before Tatsuki could say another word, a soft hum resonated in the air, and Hanataro appeared directly in front of Rukia. His sudden materialization startled Tatsuki so much that she nearly jumped out of her boots.
"Rukia! You didn't tell me this library came with ghosts!" Tatsuki hissed, clutching her chest.
Rukia stifled a laugh. "He's not just a ghost, Tatsuki. He's my friend. Hanataro, this is Tatsuki, my roommate and a friend."
Hanataro gave a polite bow, his expression warm. "Hello, Tatsuki. Any friend of Rukia's is a friend of mine." He turned back to Rukia. "What can I do for you today?"
"We're heading to the Glacierheart Expanse," Rukia said, her tone steady. "Is there anything we need to know before we go?"
Hanataro's cheerful demeanor dimmed slightly as he studied them both, his gaze lingering on Tatsuki. "The Glacierheart Expanse is no walk in the park. It's an unforgiving land, especially for those who aren't attuned to ice. Rukia, you'll be fine—you're practically built for it. Tatsuki…" He paused, frowning slightly. "As a fire spirit, you'll be at a disadvantage. The temperatures can plummet to as low as minus one hundred degrees. I'd say you have about two to two and a half hours before you start freezing over, even with your natural resistance."
Tatsuki raised an eyebrow, her confidence unshaken. "I've handled worse."
Hanataro smiled faintly but vanished as quickly as he'd appeared, only to reappear inches from Tatsuki, making her jump again. This time, he held out a bracelet made of smooth, glowing red stones. "This is a lava rock bracelet. It will monitor your body heat and provide a temporary boost if your temperature starts to drop too low. It won't make you immune to the cold, but it should buy you some extra time."
Tatsuki took the bracelet, examining it before slipping it onto her wrist. "Thanks, Hanataro."
Hanataro then turned to Rukia, his expression softening. "Fuyumi Sode no—your mother—was a remarkable woman. You're going to learn so much, Rukia. But be prepared. Some of what you discover might not be easy to accept."
Rukia nodded, her determination unwavering. "Thank you, Hanataro. I'll be careful."
Hanataro smiled, leaning in to give her a quick, reassuring hug. "If you ever need me or more information, just spell out my name on the ground—in sand, dirt, ice, whatever you have."
"Thank you," Rukia said earnestly. "I really appreciate this."
Hanataro waved her off and snapped his fingers, summoning a shimmering portal that swirled with icy blue light. "Good luck!" he called as the girls stepped through.
The sensation of crossing through the portal was like being submerged in a freezing river for a heartbeat, and then they emerged into the Glacierheart Expanse.
The landscape before them stole their breath. A vast, glacial tundra stretched as far as the eye could see, glittering under the faint glow of an overcast sky. Towering glaciers loomed in the distance like frozen monoliths, their crystalline surfaces shimmering with hues of blue and silver. Snow-covered valleys dipped and rose between jagged ice formations, and the air itself sparkled with frost, so cold it burned with every breath. The wind carried a ghostly howl, adding to the otherworldly beauty of the place.
Tatsuki stared, awestruck. "Wow. It's… incredible."
Rukia's heart swelled as the icy wind caressed her skin. Unlike Tatsuki, she felt at home here—the biting cold seemed to seep into her very soul, fueling her strength rather than sapping it. She turned to Tatsuki, who, to her surprise, appeared unfazed by the freezing temperatures for now.
"Are you okay?" Rukia asked, her breath visible in the frosty air.
Tatsuki smirked. "This? Child's play. Let's focus on finding the answers about your parents."
Rukia nodded, her determination renewed. Together, they started their trek through the snowy expanse. Each step crunched loudly against the frost-laden ground, and their breath hung in the air like faint smoke. Despite the beauty, the Glacierheart Expanse exuded an aura of danger. The icy cliffs seemed to whisper secrets, and distant shadows moved unnaturally across the tundra.
As they walked, Rukia stole a glance at Tatsuki, who moved with the same fiery confidence she always did. "You really didn't have to come with me," Rukia said softly.
Tatsuki snorted. "What, and miss the chance to see this place? Not to mention helping one of my best friends? No way. Besides," she added, holding up the lava rock bracelet, "I've got this. I'll be fine."
Rukia smiled faintly and turned her gaze forward. The Glacierheart Expanse loomed ahead like a frigid fortress, its icy walls promising both answers and challenges. Whatever secrets the expanse held, Rukia knew she wouldn't face them alone.
The girls trudged through the endless white expanse, their breath visible in the freezing air. The wind howled mournfully, carrying with it a sense of unease that neither of them could shake. Tatsuki suddenly halted, her body going rigid.
Rukia stopped mid-step, her brows knitting in concern. "What's wrong—"
Tatsuki raised her hand sharply, silencing her. Her sharp eyes scanned the desolate landscape, darting between jagged ice formations and shadowed crevices. The tundra seemed eerily still, the sound of the wind now deafening in its monotony. A faint whoosh cut through the silence. Tatsuki's eyes widened. She grabbed Rukia by the arm, yanking her forward.
"Run!" Tatsuki barked.
"What—" Rukia started, but before she could finish, an ice arrow slammed into the ground where she'd just been standing, sending shards of frost into the air.
Her heart raced as Tatsuki pulled her along. She glanced back and gasped. Five pale women with icy beauty and flowing purplish-white hair flew toward them, their figures draped in gleaming armor that shimmered like frost under the faint light. Each held a bow carved from ice, arrows nocked and ready. They rode atop sleek, glimmering ice dragons, their translucent wings cutting through the icy air with lethal precision.
"Tatsuki, who are they?" Rukia's voice trembled as more arrows rained down, narrowly missing them.
"Not the time, Rukia!" Tatsuki growled, holding her close as she zigzagged to avoid the attacks.
Tatsuki's feet pounded against the frozen ground, the frost threatening to slip her up with every step. Her breath came in bursts, visible clouds in the frigid air. Another arrow whizzed past, slicing a strand of Rukia's hair.
"Your ice powers would really come in handy right now," Tatsuki snapped as she dodged another arrow. "I can't use mine in this cold very well. Fire and ice don't exactly mix, especially in a dominant ice element!"
Rukia extended her hand instinctively, willing her power to surge forth, but nothing happened. A cold panic washed over her. "They're not working! I—I can't concentrate!"
"Figure it out fast!" Tatsuki shouted, her voice strained as she swerved and ducked to avoid the onslaught. "We're running out of ground!"
Rukia twisted in Tatsuki's arms to look ahead—and froze in terror. The ground ended abruptly in a sheer cliff, its jagged edge framed by a chasm that seemed to stretch endlessly into the mist below.
Her breath hitched. "We're going to fall!"
Tatsuki cursed under her breath. "Not if I can help it. Rukia, lower your body temperature. Now!"
Though confused, Rukia obeyed, focusing on cooling her inner core. The air around her grew even colder, frost forming along the edges of her hair and lashes. She felt Tatsuki's body heat spike as flames began to dance along her arms and legs, flickering brighter with each passing second.
"Hold on tight!" Tatsuki warned.
Rukia clung to her as Tatsuki surged forward, flames roaring to life around her feet. The fire propelled them forward as she leaped off the edge, the sheer drop below them making Rukia's stomach churn.
The women above screamed commands, their icy dragons circling like vultures. Arrows rained down relentlessly, slicing through the air around them.
"Surrender!" one of the women shouted, her voice cold and commanding.
Tatsuki growled, her flames flaring brighter. But just as they reached the other side of the chasm, her fire flickered—then went out entirely.
"Fuck!" Tatsuki yelled, the sudden loss of heat dragging her down. In a last-ditch effort, she heaved Rukia forward with all her strength.
Rukia hit the icy ledge on the other side with a thud, gasping for breath. She scrambled to her feet and turned back, her heart stopping as she saw Tatsuki hanging onto the edge of the cliff by her fingertips, her body dangling precariously over the abyss.
"Tatsuki!" Rukia screamed, rushing to her. She dropped to her knees, gripping Tatsuki's arms tightly and trying to pull her up.
Above them, the pale women circled closer. Their dragons swooped low, their icy scales reflecting the dim light like shattered glass.
"Stand down, fire demon," one of them commanded harshly, her bow drawn and an arrow aimed directly at Tatsuki's head. "Surrender now, or we'll kill you both."
"She's not a fire demon, and neither am I!" Rukia shouted desperately, her hands sweating from the stressful situation as she struggled to lift Tatsuki. "Please, we don't mean any harm. Help us!"
Her plea was met with cruel laughter.
One of the women sneered, her icy gaze fixed on Rukia. "Spare us your lies. Mizuki, kill them."
Rukia's blood ran cold as one of the women, Mizuki, raised her bow, the ice arrow glowing with deadly intent. Time seemed to slow as the arrow was nocked and drawn, aimed directly at Rukia's head.
"No!" Tatsuki roared, her grip slipping.
Rukia tightened her hold on Tatsuki, refusing to let go even as her body trembled with fear. "Please! We're not your enemies!" she cried again, her voice breaking.
Mizuki's cold smile deepened as she loosed the arrow.
