Chapter 17: The Battle at Saffron Gym
After long days of traveling, Gilbert and his group have finally reached Saffron City. "We're finally here." Gilbert said. "We actually made it." Tad said. "I can't believe it." Sakura said. As they walked into the city, they looked around at the many buildings within the streets. "Look at this place." Sakura said. "I've never seen so many buildings in one place before." Tad said. "Of course. Saffron City has some of the most famous places in the region. First, there's the Silph Co. building. It's the biggest goods manufacturing company in the entire Kanto region." Yolanda explained. "Wow, that's amazing." Sakura said. "And what's that building over there?" Gilbert asked, pointing to a nearby dojo. "That's the Fighting Dojo. It's where trainers go to battle against strong Fighting-Type Pokémon." Yolanda said. "Tell you what. After I win my 4th badge, we can go look around the city." Gilbert offered.
"Hey, guys!" A familiar voice called. Gilbert's group turned around to see Arata walking up to them. "It's Arata." Gilbert said. "It's so good to see you all again." Arata said. "Either you guys know this fella or you 3 are just too friendly with people." Tad said. "Oh, sorry. This is our friend Arata. We met him a while back before you joined us." Gilbert said. "I see. It's nice to meet you, Arata. I'm Tad Garcia." Tad introduced, shaking Arata's hand. "It's a pleasure to meet you too. Wow, I never thought I'd meet a Garcia. Your family's quite famous." Arata said. "Yeah, I know. We're not big braggers about it." Tad said, being sheepish. "Right. Well, you guys aren't the only one with a new friend." Arata said. Just then, a strange Pokémon floated down in front of Gilbert, startling him. "Whoa!" He said. "Porygon." It said. "What is that thing?" Sakura asked. "Meet Porygon." Arata said as Gilbert scanned it with his Pokédex.
Porygon, the Virtual Pokémon. A Normal-Type. Porygon is an artificial Pokémon created by programming code. Despite not being able to breathe or eat, it still accepts food. It proves helpful in cyberspace.
"Whoa. An actual Porygon." Gilbert said in awe. "Where did you even get such a rare Pokémon?" Sakura asked. "I got it from Silph Co. An ex-employee was making some trouble while I was visiting and I beat him in a battle. As a thank you gift, the president of Silph Co. gave me this Porygon." Arata explained. "Porygon." Porygon beeped with a smile. "You visited Silph Co.?" Yolanda asked. "Yeah. I went there after I won my 4th badge at the Gym." Arata said, showing the group his 4 badges in his badge case. "Wow. That's sort of a coincidence. We were on our way to the Saffron Gym ourselves." Gilbert said. "Why am I not surprised? I can take you there." Arata said. "You can?" Sakura asked. "Just follow me." Arata said. As they walked off, they walked past an old man sitting on a bench, who was watching them with an interest.
A little while later, the group arrived at the Saffron Gym. "Welcome to the Saffron Gym, gang." Arata said. "Well, it's been a long time coming, but I feel ready to battle for my 4th badge." Gilbert said. Suddenly, there was a tap on his shoulder. He looked behind him, but there wasn't anybody there. "Huh?" He said in confusion. "What's wrong, Gilbert?" Yolanda asked. "I thought I felt someone tap my shoulder." Gilbert said. Suddenly, a Haunter appeared in front of the group. "HAUNTER!" It shrieked, scaring everyone. "Well, I certainly wasn't ready to be scared by a Haunter!" Gilbert said in fear. "Haunt Haunt Haunt Haunt!" Haunter laughed. "Haunter." A woman's voice said. Haunter stiffened up as a woman walked up. "I thought we talked about you containing your playful jokester side around other people." She playfully scolded. "Haunt Haunt Haunt." Haunter chuckled sheepishly. "I'm sorry about my Haunter. He has quite the sense of humor." The woman said. "That's alright. Haunter just caught us by surprise." Sakura said. "Anyway, I'm Sabrina, the Saffron City Gym Leader." The woman, Sabrina, introduced. "I'm Gilbert from Pallet Town. I'm here to challenge you for a battle." Gilbert said. "And I gladly accept your challenge." Sabrina said. "Hold on. Miss Sabrina, if your gym specializes in Psychic-Types, why do you have a Haunter?" Yolanda asked. "Well, it all happened after a certain trainer defeated my Kadabra with his Espeon and restored my sanity. And in gratitude, he gave me this Haunter that followed him and his big group of friends all the way from Lavender Town. And since then, Haunter's helped keep a smile on my face." Sabrina explained. "Haunt, Haunter Haunt." Haunter nuzzled his trainer. They were awe to hear that. Even Porygon felt awe too. "But anyway, Gilbert, you ready to battle?" Sabrina asked. "I sure am." Gilbert said, nodded.
Later, Gilbert and Sabrina stood on the opposite sides of the gym's battle field. Yolanda, Sakura, Tad, Arata and Porygon watched from the seats. "The battle between Sabrina the Gym Leader and Gilbert the challenger will now begin. Both sides will have the use of 3 Pokémon each. The battle will be over when all 3 Pokémon on either side are unable to continue battling. Therefore, only the challenger will be allowed to make substitutions." The referee declared. "As Gym Leader, it's my responsibility to choose my starting Pokémon first. And my first Pokémon…is Haunter." Sabrina said. "Haunter." Haunter floated out onto the field. "So, she's starting with Haunter." Gilbert said, scanning Haunter with his Pokémon.
Haunter, the Gas Pokémon. A Ghost-&-Poison-Type and the evolved form of Ghastly. As it hides in walls and slips through anything solid, it can watch its opponents and wait for a precise moment for a sneak attack.
"So, she's starting with her Ghost-Type. Then I know who I'm choosing first. I choose you, Sneasel!" Gilbert called, tossing Sneasel's PokéBall. "Sneasel!" Sneasel cried as he came out. "Why's he using Sneasel? Fighting-Type attacks don't work on Ghost-Types." Yolanda said in confusion. "He might be wanting to use Sneasel's speed to try and match Haunter's ghost-like movements." Arata said. "But still, Sneasel's Fighting-Type attacks won't be able to affect Haunter." Sakura said. "True. But Sneasel doesn't know just Fighting-Type moves." Tad said. "Let the match begin!" The referee announced. "The first attack's all yours, Gilbert." Sabrina said. "Alright. Go, Sneasel! Metal Claw!" Gilbert called. "Snea…" Sneasel's claws glowed metal grey as he went in to attack. "You know what to do, Haunter." Sabrina said. "Haunter." Haunter disappeared, dodging Sneasel's attack. "Sneasel?" Sneasel looked around in confusion. "Be careful, Sneasel. Haunter can appear and disappear literally ghost-like." Gilbert said. "Being careful won't help. Haunter, Shadow Claw!" Sabrina ordered. "Haunter!" Haunter reappeared as his left hand's claws started glowing in shadowy black. "Quick, Sneasel, counter that! Throat Chop!" Gilbert called. "Snea…SEL!" Sneasel's claws glowed purple as he dodged Haunter's Shadow Claw and struck it in the throat. "Nice shot, Sneasel." Gilbert said.
"What's Throat Chop?" Tad asked. "It's a Dark-Type attack. And a strong one to use against a Ghost-Type like Haunter." Yolanda said. "Right. Because Ghost-Types are weak against Dark-Types." Sakura said. "Maybe, but it doesn't look like Haunter's out of it yet." Arata said.
"Haunter." Haunter recovered quickly, even after being hit by a Dark-Type move. "I admit, your Sneasel's quite an opponent, Gilbert. But I'm afraid that it won't be enough to defeat my Haunter. Sucker Punch!" Sabrina ordered. "Haunter!" Haunter's right hand glowed shadowy black as it prepared to punch. "Sneasel, watch out! Use Agility!" Gilbert called. "Snea? Sneasel!" Sneasel started running, increasing his speed. But Haunter caught up with him. "Sneasel?!" Sneasel was shocked. "Oh no!" Gilbert exclaimed in shock. "Haun…TER!" Haunter punched Sneasel hard and knocked him out. "Sneasel!" Gilbert cried. "Sneasel is unable to battle. Haunter wins." The referee announced. "Poor Sneasel." Sakura said. "I figured Sneasel would've done great damage with his Throat Chop." Yolanda said. "Let's hope Gilbert's next Pokémon can help finish what Sneasel started." Tad said with hope.
Gilbert returned Sneasel to his PokéBall. "Thanks, Sneasel. You take a nice long rest." He said before putting it back on his belt. "So, who's your next Pokémon, Gilbert?" Sabrina asked. Gilbert brought out his next PokéBall and stared at it. 'I was hoping to wait until the last battle to use you, but I guess it's time to unveil my secret weapon.' He thought. "I choose you, Gengar!" He called, tossing the PokéBall. "Gengar!" Gengar called as he came out. "Huh? When did Gilbert get a Gengar?" Arata asked. "He recently caught it a few days ago. Along with me catching my Teddiursa." Yolanda said. "So, you brought your own Ghost-Type to battle my Psychic-Types. Too bad it won't get the chance. Haunter, use Shadow Claw!" Sabrina ordered. "Haunt!" Haunter prepared another Shadow Claw. "Gengar, use Dark Pulse!" Gilbert called. "Gengar!" Gengar fired his Dark Pulse, striking Haunter hard. "Haunter, no!" Sabrina cried. Haunter couldn't take it and fainted. "Haunter is unable to battle. Gengar wins." The referee announced. "Woo-hoo! Way to go, Gilbert!" Sakura cheered. "That was quite the Dark Pulse. I never seen one so strong." Arata said. "Yeah. That Gengar's no slouch." Yolanda said.
Sabrina walked up to Haunter and picked him up. "You did a great job, Haunter. I am very proud of you. Now get a good rest." She said, returning Haunter to his PokéBall. "Your Gengar's pretty tough, Gilbert." She said. "Thanks. I didn't have Gengar that long though, but it's great to see that we work great together as a team." Gilbert said. "Gengar." Gengar nodded. "Well then, let's see how well you do against my next Pokémon. Go, Hypno!" Sabrina called, tossing her second PokéBall. "Hypno." Hypno said as it came out. "A Hypno." Gilbert said as he scanned Hypno with his Pokédex.
Hypno, the Hypnosis Pokémon. A Psychic-Type and the evolved form of Drowzee. Hypno uses a pendulum to hypnotize opponents into a deep sleep.
"Okay, Gengar, take a break for now." Gilbert said, returning Gengar to his PokéBall. "Now to show them what you've got. I choose you, Spinarak!" He tossed another PokéBall. "Spinarak!" Spinarak squeaked as she came out. "He's using Spinarak now." Sakura said. "Makes sense. Bug-Types have a huge advantage on Psychic-Types." Yolanda said. "Has he ever used Spinarak in a battle before?" Tad asked. "I've seen how well Spinarak did against my friend Aubrina's Grimer when we first met Gilbert, but I don't know how well Spinarak can do against a Gym Leader's Hypno." Arata said.
"Spinarak, I know that this is the first time in a gym battle, so let's do our very best." Gilbert said. "Spin!" Spinarak nodded. "You sound pretty confident to use a Spinarak against my Hypno. But I like a good challenge. Make your attack." Sabrina said. "My pleasure. Spinarak, use String Shot!" Gilbert called. "Spin! Spinarak!" Spinarak leapt up and fired String Shot towards Hypno. "Stop it with Psychic, then send it right back!" Sabrina ordered. "Hyp…NO!" Hypno's eyes glowed bright blue as it stopped the String Shot with Psychic, and sent it right back. "Here it comes, Spinarak! Pin Missile!" Gilbert called. "Spinar! Spinarak!" Spinarak fired Pin Missiles from her mandibles. The Bug-Type attack shredded the String Shot and struck Hypno. "Keep fighting, Hypno! Psybeam!" Sabrina ordered. "Hypno!" Hypno fired Psybeam from its eyes. "Counter that attack, Spinarak! Night Shade!" Gilbert called. "Spinarak!" Spinarak fired Night Shade from her eyes. The 2 attacks collided and created a small explosion. "Alright, Hypno, let's see what they think about this. Zen Headbutt!" Sabrina ordered. "Hypno!" Hypno charged towards Spinarak, its head glowing bright blue and pulsing with psychic energy. "Spinarak, look out! Use String Shot to dodge!" Gilbert called. "Spin!" Spinarak fired String Shot from her butt and pulled herself out of Hypno's path, dodging the attack. "Hypno?" Hypno looked around in shock as Spinarak swung on her webs. "Okay, that's a pretty clever way to dodge, Gilbert. But it won't be enough for this. Use Confuse Ray!" Sabrina ordered. "Hyp…" Hypno motioned its arms, creating 4 golden psychic orbs. "Oh no! Spinarak, look out!" Gilbert cried. "Hyp…NO!" Hypno fired the balls, hitting Spinarak and knocking her loose from her web. "Spinarak, are you okay?" Gilbert asked with concern. But as Spinarak recovered, her eyes glowed red. "Oh no!" Sakura cried. "Spinarak's confused!" Arata exclaimed. "Quick, Gilbert! Call her back quickly! The longer she stays out, the stronger the confusion takes hold of her mind!" Yolanda called.
"Alright, Hypno, let's use Hex." Sabrina said. "Hypno…" Hypno's eyes glowed red as a giant shadowy purple circle appeared over its head and a big red eye opened in the center. "What does Hex do?" Tad asked. "Hex is a deadly Ghost-Type attack. It's damage doubles whenever the opposing Pokémon has a status condition." Yolanda explained. "And since Spinarak's confused, Hex's damage will double and hurt her bad." Arata said with worry. Hex released several ghostly waves and struck Spinarak, causing her to cry out in pain. "SPINARAK!" Gilbert cried. "SPINA! SPINA!" Spinarak cried. Suddenly, her body started to glow. "Look!" Gilbert exclaimed. "What's that?" Sabrina asked. Sakura, Yolanda, Tad, Arata and Porygon looked on in shock. Just then, Spinarak's body started getting bigger, her legs getting longer, and 2 structures grew on its rear. As the glow died down, in Spinarak's place stood… "Ariados!" Gilbert said with glee as he scanned Ariados with his Pokédex.
Ariados, the Long Leg Pokémon. A Bug-and-Poison-Type, and the evolved form of Spinarak. Ariados spins extremely strong, sticky webs to trap anything from prey to adversaries.
"This is amazing. Spinarak evolved right when I needed her the most." Gilbert said with awe. "Ari." Ariados nodded to her trainer. "Alright, Ariados, let's win this battle together." Gilbert said. "Ari!" Ariados nodded as she prepared to battle. "Okay, Hypno. Let's see what this Ariados has got. Use Zen Headbutt." Sabrina said. "Hypno." Hypno's head powered up with Zen Headbutt as it charged towards Ariados. "Alright, Ariados, let's show them how strong you are! Use Throat Chop!" Gilbert called. "Ari…" Ariados' front legs glowed purple as she charged towards Hypno. As Hypno was about to strike, Ariados swiftly moved out of the way and struck Hypno, dealing super effective damage. "Hypno!" Sabrina cried. Hypno fainted from taking too much damage from that Dark-Type attack. "Hypno is unable to battle. Ariados wins." The referee announced. "Way to go, Ariados! One more and we win!" Gilbert said. "Ari!" Ariados hissed happily as she leapt for Gilbert and pounced him. "Okay, okay, Ariados, cut it out!" Gilbert laughed as Ariados nuzzled him. "That's amazing. Spinarak evolved into Ariados and learned Throat Chop, giving Gilbert his second win." Sakura said. "That means one more and he wins the match." Tad said. "Don't be so sure. For all we know, Sabrina's saving her best Pokémon for last." Yolanda said.
Sabrina returned her Hypno to its PokéBall. "That was a great battle, Hypno. Now get a good rest." She said. "I admit, I'm very impressed, Gilbert. I haven't seen a Pokémon evolve in one of my gym battles since my Abra evolved into Kadabra. But this battle is not yet over." Sabrina said, getting out her last PokéBall. "I choose you, old friend. Go…Alakazam!" She called, throwing the PokéBall. "Kazam!" Alakazam called as he came out. "Whoa. So, that's her ace Pokémon. Alakazam." Gilbert said, scanning Alakazam with her Pokédex.
Alakazam, the Psi Pokémon. A Psychic-Type and the evolved form of Kadabra. Alakazam uses the double spoons in its hands to increase its psychic powers.
"Well, this could be a problem. Alakazam is the strongest Pokémon Sabrina has. Its Psychic attacks are off the charts powerful." Arata said. "No problem. Ariados and I can handle it." Gilbert said. "Ari." Ariados hissed. "Oh, you think Alakazam is strong now? You haven't seen anything yet." Sabrina said. She reached into her shirt and pulled out a necklace with a familiar jewel. "Is that what I think it is?" Sakura asked with worry. "It's a Key Stone." Yolanda said. "Then that means one thing." Arata said. "Kazam." Alakazam revealed a similar gemstone on its right wrist. Sabrina activated her Key Stone. "May our bond strengthen even the strongest of our psychic connections. Mega Evolve!" She called, connecting the Key Stone's energy with that of Alakazam's Mega Stone. And suddenly, Alakazam, Mega Evolved. "Kazam!" Alakazam was now Mega Alakazam. Gilbert and his friends stared in shock.
"Alakazam can Mega Evolve too?" Sakura asked in shock. "This is not good. With Alakazam Mega Evolved, Ariados won't stand a chance." Yolanda said with worry. "Let's just hope Gilbert has some sort of plan." Arata said.
Gilbert looked a little worried himself. "Okay, Ariados, let's start off with a Night Shade." He said. "Aria!" Ariados fired Night Shade from her eyes. But Mega Alakazam simply floated to the right, dodging the attack without Sabrina even telling it what to do. That shocked the group. "How did it do that?" Tad asked. "You see, when Alakazam Mega Evolves, its psychic powers also increase. It can telepathically sense whenever your Pokémon is going to try and attack." Sabrina explained. Gilbert was stunned by this, but it wasn't gonna stop him. "Don't stop, Ariados! Try a Pin Missile!" He called. "Aria…dos!" Ariados fired Pin Missile from her mandibles. But Mega Alakazam dodged each missile with wicked speed. "Man, Mega Alakazam is so fast!" Gilbert said in shock. Ariados tried to strike Mega Alakazam with moves like Pin Missile, Throat Chop and Night Shade, but Mega Alakazam dodged every single one. "Ariados can't land a single hit!" Sakura said with worry. "So long as Mega Alakazam has those incredible psychic senses, Gilbert won't be able to win this battle or the match." Tad said. 'Come on, Gilbert.' Yolanda thought with worry.
But Ariados was panting, getting tired from trying to land her attacks. "Ariados, are you okay?" Gilbert asked. "Aria." Ariados panted. "I respect Ariados' fighting spirit, Gilbert. But the battle's over. Use Psybeam, Alakazam!" Sabrina ordered. "Kazam!" Mega Alakazam fired Psybeam from its eyes and struck Ariados hard, knocking her out. "Ariados is unable to battle. Alakazam wins." The referee announced. Gilbert returned Ariados to her PokéBall. "I'm sorry, Ariados. You did the best that you could. Get a good rest." He said. Sakura, Yolanda, Tad and Arata looked on with worry and sorrow for their friend's loss. "Now all Gilbert has left is Gengar." Tad said. "Gengar might be strong against Psychic-Types, but he won't have a chance against Mega Alakazam." Sakura said with worry. "Still, Gengar might be coming out fresh since he only used one Dark Pulse to take out Haunter." Arata said with curiosity. Yolanda looked on with pure worry now.
Gilbert looked at his last PokéBall. 'I remember how tough Mega Evolved Pokémon are. Just like Aria's Mawile.' He thought.
[Flashback]
Mawile caught Blaziken's foot in her jaws before Mega Evolving. 'The way she caught Blaziken's Blaze Kick in her jaws. And despite type advantages.' After Mega Evolving, Mega Mawile used Iron Head to collide with Blaziken's Flare Blitz. 'But still, that battle between them taught me that even though a Pokémon has a disadvantage, they still find a way.' Mega Mawile and Blaziken stood on their feet before Blaziken fainted.
[Flashback End]
"It's time. I choose you, Gengar!" He called, tossing the PokéBall. "Gengar!" Gengar spooked as he came out. "Just so you know, Gilbert, the match will be over whenever one of us loses. Truth be told, ever since I saw that you had a Gengar, I've been looking forward to having my Alakazam face it in our final match." Sabrina said. "I figured. Gengar's been looking forward to being part of this battle too. Come on, Gengar, let's show Sabrina what we got." Gilbert said. "Gengar!" Gengar floated up, preparing for battle. "I respect your Gengar's fighting spirit…but this match is mine! Psyshock!" Sabrina ordered. "Alakazam!" Mega Alakazam prepared Psyshock, summoning 4 orbs of psychic plasma. "Gengar, Shadow Ball!" Gilbert called. "Gengar!" Gengar formed a Shadow Ball in his hands and threw it as Mega Alakazam fired Psyshock. Both attacks collided, causing another minor explosion. "Now use Dark Pulse!" Gilbert called. "Gengar!" Gengar fired Dark Pulse, striking Mega Alakazam hard. "Stay strong, Alakazam! Use Psybeam!" Sabrina ordered. "La! Kazam!" Mega Alakazam fired Psybeam from its eyes, striking Gengar hard. "Gengar, hold on!" Gilbert called in worry. "Look at them. They're giving it all they've got." Yolanda said. "Only a matter of time before one of them goes down." Tad said.
"Alakazam, use Hypnosis!" Sabrina ordered. "Ala." Mega Alakazam's eyes glowed purple and started spinning its multiple spoons as it released several waves of Hypnosis. "Gen…gar." Gengar got hit and fell fast asleep. Gilbert was stunned by this as the others looked on in shock. "Sorry, Gilbert. Gengar won't be able to do much asleep. Finish it off, Alakazam! Zen Headbutt!" Sabrina ordered. "Kazam!" Mega Alakazam's head glowed with Zen Headbutt as it prepared to finish Gengar. "Gengar, use Sleep Talk!" Gilbert called. Suddenly, Gengar floated up, dodging Alakazam's attack while still asleep. "What?!" Sabrina exclaimed in shock. Just then, Gengar's fist glowed purple and gave Alakazam a shadowy punch. "That was Shadow Punch! How'd Gengar do that while it was still sleeping?" Tad asked in shock. "That's a move called Sleep Talk. When a Pokémon is put to sleep, Sleep Talk lets it use one of its other moves at random." Yolanda said. "Gilbert must've planned that out after he caught Gengar, thinking that one of Sabrina's Pokémon might know Hypnosis." Sakura said.
Gengar continued using Sleep Talk to attack Mega Alakazam, striking it with moves like Fire Punch, Thunder Punch, Ice Punch, Shadow Punch and Shadow Claw. Mega Alakazam couldn't even find a chance to return a counter attack. 'This is bad. Alakazam can't dodge because of Gengar attacking while sleeping. But there's still one move that can help.' Sabrina thought. 'I can tell by that look in Sabrina's eyes. She's gonna have Alakazam use an attack that'll do more damage to Gengar while he's sleeping.' Gilbert thought. "Alakazam, use Dream Eater before Gengar wakes up! Hurry!" Sabrina ordered. But it was too late. Gengar had just woken up. "Now, Gengar, finish this with Shadow Ball!" Gilbert called. "Gen…GAR!" Gengar summoned a powerful Shadow Ball and threw it at Mega Alakazam, striking it hard in the chest. "Alakazam!" Sabrina cried. As it collapsed, it returned to its original form. Alakazam tried to get up, but lost its strength and fainted. "Alakazam is unable to continued! Gengar wins the round! Therefore, the winner of the match is Gilbert the challenger!" The referee announced. "YES! We won!" Gilbert cheered. Just then, Gengar playfully tackled him and hugged him. "That was great, Gengar. I'm so proud of you." Gilbert said. "Gengar." Gengar said happily. Sabrina returned Alakazam to its PokéBall. "You put up and great fight, Alakazam. As always. And I admit, he put up a better one." She said, gazing over at Gilbert's group as they congratulated their friend.
Later, everyone stood outside the gym. "Gilbert, I hadn't had a battle that exciting in such a long time. I never expected your Gengar would know Sleep Talk to counter my Alakazam's Hypnosis." Sabrina said. "Well, I figured I'd have it prepared just in case." Gilbert said. "And it's a good thing you did. And to reward you for your victory at the Saffron City Gym, I award you with the Marsh Badge." Sabrina said, holding out a Marsh Badge. "Thank you so much, Sabrina. That makes badge number 4." Gilbert said, accepting the badge.
Later, the group went to the Pokémon Center and sat in the waiting room as Nurse Joy looked over Gilbert's Pokémon. "So, now that Gilbert's won his 4th badge, what are you guys going to do next?" Arata asked. "Actually, we're gonna stick around Saffron City for a while and see the sights. Except we don't know where to start." Gilbert said.
