Chapter 2
The rangers were in their base after school. It was a pretty uneventful day. Preston and Sarah managed to get a few other moments alone during the day and Sarah had been constantly trying to convince Preston to talk to his dad. They were currently training. Well, all the rangers except Preston. After finding out that he was sick the last few days, they all insisted that he sit out. Instead, Preston was looking over the last page in his spell book for the millionth time. He's been looking over it a lot since he used that spell. He's still in disbelief that he actually used it.
"Good work, everyone," Brody said to the team when they finished training. They all walked over to where Preston was sitting down and looking at his spell book.
"Don't you know every spell in there by now?" Calvin asked Preston. Preston's spell book actually wasn't that big. It didn't have many spells in it, and he's used every spell except the last one several times.
"I just like to look through it again sometimes," Preston lied.
"Well, we gotta go," Levi said referring to himself and Brody. "We're spending time with our dad."
"Bye," the others said and waved goodbye to the gold and red rangers.
"We better get going too," Hayley said and she and left with Calvin. They were going to see a movie.
That just left Preston, Sarah, Mick, and Redbot in the base.
"Preston, can we talk for a minute," Mick said.
"Sure," Preston said. "What did you want to talk about?" Preston was hoping Mick wasn't going to talk to him about his magic.
Sarah came up and grabbed his hand and squeezed it. Mick noticed that. "Sarah, would you mind if we talked-"
Preston cut him off. "I would prefer if Sarah stayed."
"Ok. I wanted to ask about that spell you used to defeat Madame Odius's monster a few days ago. How were you able to use it?"
Preston looked at Sarah for encouragement and sighed. "I'm not completely sure."
"You shouldn't have been able to use it unless you have magical ancestry."
"This is why you should talk to your dad," Sarah told Preston.
"What do you mean he should talk to his dad?" Mick asked Sarah.
Preston knew that he wasn't getting out of telling Mick. "When Madame Odius attacked me, she said that my power star didn't give me my powers but activated them. She said that my mother was a witch. I don't know if she was telling the truth."
"I wouldn't want to trust Madame Odius about it either, but...she might be telling the truth," Mick said. "You can't rule it out."
"I can't talk to my dad about it."
"I think you need to," Sarah said. "You need to know the truth about it and your dad is probably the only person that could tell you."
Preston looked at Sarah, Mick, and Redbot, who was there listening the entire time. "Fine," Preston caved. "I'll talk to him."
Preston's House
That night
Preston walked into his house. He lived in a pretty big house compared to the others since his dad is a wealthy businessman. He walked into the living room where his dad was sitting in one of the chairs.
Marcus Tien, Preston's dad, looked up when he walked into the living room. "How was school today, Preston?"
"It was good," Preston said. "Can we talk?"
"I don't know. I have a lot to do in the morning."
"It's kind of important."
Marcus didn't expect whatever it was to be so important. They don't usually have important talks. "Sure."
Preston sat down on the couch. He wasn't really sure how to start this conversation. It felt really weird that he was about to have this conversation with his dad.
"What did you want to talk about?" Marcus asked after Preston had been silent for a couple of minutes.
"I wanted to ask you about mom."
"What do you want to know?"
"I know this is going to sound crazy, but was she a witch?"
"Why are you asking?"
Preston chose his words carefully. He still wasn't going to tell his dad that he is a ranger. "Someone told me that my mom was a witch. I didn't want to believe it, but..."
"You've developed magic powers, haven't you?"
Preston wasn't expecting his father to jump to that and now he's realizing that Madame Odius was right. "You're not denying it?!"
"Have you developed magic powers?"
Preston stood up from where he was sitting, frustrated. "I got magic powers a while ago! I didn't think that the reason I got these powers was because of my mom! How could you keep this from me?!"
Marcus also stood up to try to calm Preston down. "You have to understand. We did it for your own protection."
"My own protection! All my life, I didn't know about this! What other secrets are you keeping from me!"
"We didn't want you to know because of your brother!" Marcus felt like he had to shout that part because of how Preston was yelling at him.
That wasn't what Preston was expecting. He had been trying to prepare himself to hear the truth about his mom, not this. "I-I have a brother?" he said that softer than expected. How could he have a brother that he didn't even know about?
"We had to protect you from him. If he found you-"
"Save it," Preston cut his dad off. "You lied to me my whole life about everything! I didn't know my mother was a witch! I didn't know I had a brother! Everything I knew about my family has just been a giant lie!" Preston started to walk out of the living room and noticed that his dad was trying to follow him. "Don't follow me." He ran up to his room. He didn't want to be in the same room as his father anymore. He couldn't believe that his father had been lying to him his whole life. His mom really was a witch! He had a brother that he never even knew about! He didn't even know what to think about his dad anymore. It was starting to all make sense to him, but he still couldn't believe that he wasn't told any of this. One more thought crossed Preston's mind. 'How powerful am I?'
