I didn't introduce Max's kids here because I have a different scenario in my mind for them *scratches head sheepishly* So without further ado! Please read and enjoy this humourous banter between the three eleven year olds.

Where We Always End Up — Chapter 1

It was a bright sunny morning. In the school hallway, stood two eleven year old boys leaning against their respective lockers, one was approximately 5 feet tall and had slate-black hair, while the other was just an inch shorter than him and had dark black hair. Both were staring down at the corridors as if they were waiting for someone.

Indeed they were. They were waiting for their classmate, who happened to be their friend since birth, since their parents were extremely close friends.

"She's late," One of the boys said, crossing his arms and blowing a piece of hair from his face. "Bet she got into another fight with her mom."

Right on cue, a hot pink haired girl stormed down the corridor, her lip gloss that she stole from her mom, slightly smudged on her lips, and her eyebrows furrowed in annoyance. She was the same age as the two boys, and approximately 4 feet and 10 inches.

"Good morning Makoto! Gou!" She stood infront of them with her signature smile, fangs showing but sighing after two seconds.

"Morning, Grandma," Makoto greeted with a mischievous grin. "Why the grumpy face?"

"Morning Lin." Gou greeted, softly but still maintaining his stoic demeanor, that he got from his dad.

"I don't like my mom today, she's too stubborn. She sent me to school by threatening to take away my favourite white tiger plushie. Can you believe that?!" Lin muttered, her face falling more with yet another dramatic sigh.

Gou straightened up. "You shouldn't talk like that about your mom."

"Ughhh, you sound so like a teacher," Lin groaned.

Makoto tilted his head. "So what's the issue? Didn't wanna see us today?"

"No, I did wanna see you guys," she clarified, rolling her eyes. "I just didn't wanna see school. I wanted to sleep with my white tiger plushie, but my mom sent me, as you can see."

Gou raised an eyebrow. "That's because your mom is worried about your attendance. Does she know you've been skipping classes for extra curriculars way too much?"

Lin shook her head with zero guilt. She always took pride in being the best athlete of their entire batch. She could run, play basketball and beyblade. Besides that she was an amazing cheerleader. Ofcourse she took pride.

Makoto gasped. "Lady, you are so doomed. My mom would've grounded me for three years if she knew I was skipping classes."

Lin shrugged. "Well, I guess I can handle a little bit of scolding."

"Your mom scolds you 'a little' for skipping classes?" Makoto looked at her incredulously.

"No I mean, what's she gonna do at most? Yell at me? She does that atleast twice everyday. Or is she gonna chase me with a broom? I bet I'm faster than her. Or is she throw me out of the house? She wouldn't, I just know, she gave birth to me and wouldn't want that much effort to go roam on the streets. So I just know I can handle it." Lin smiled smugly.

Both boys looked at each other and sighed, exchanging glances like two exhausted babysitters.

The bell rang, and all three of them rushed toward their classroom, slipping into their seats just as their geography teacher walked in with a stack of maps and an exhausted look on her face.

"Good morning, class. Open your books to page 72," she announced, already scribbling something on the board about river basins.

Lin groaned softly under her breath and dropped her head onto her desk. "Why does geography exist?" she muttered.

Makoto leaned over from his seat beside her. "So Gou can be the nerd he's destined to be."

Gou, seated right in front of them, turned slightly. "Stop calling me a nerd," he said calmly.

"But you are," Makoto grinned. "A very noble, stoic, lovable nerd, Hiwatari."

Lin peeked up through her arms. "Hey, Gou, can I… maybe, just maybe… borrow your notes?"

"You mean copy them during class like every other time?" Gou asked, not looking up from his notebook.

"…Yes."

He sighed, already sliding his notebook slightly to the left so she could see. "Fine. But don't get caught this time." And he did that just with her. He'd never let anyone borrow his notes but Lin? He'd let her borrow his face paint if she wanted it. Except she didn't. She rather used her cheap lipgloss on him, and he let her. Because he'd never say no to her.

Makoto's ears perked. A slow, evil grin spread on his face as he slouched in his seat, plotting.

The teacher droned on about geography facts and things that were in the text book. Lin, with all the focus of a professional daydreamer, was scribbling away beside Gou's notebook. Makoto, like a mischievous little gremlin, casually bent down, pretended to drop his pencil, and then nudged his foot against Lin's desk—just enough to make her elbow bump into Gou's notebook, dragging it forward too obviously.

The teacher turned around, narrowing her eyes. "Lin Xiao Kon."

Lin froze. Her pencil halfway in the air. Gou silently screamed 'Why' in his mind.

"Yes… Miss Koyanagi?" she replied sweetly, blinking innocently.

"Could you tell me what an oxbow lake is?"

Lin blinked once. Twice. Then she looked sideways at Makoto who was stifling a laugh.

She cleared her throat. "Uh… a really… big bowl of cereal?"

Makoto burst out laughing.

The class was dead silent.

The teacher blinked.

Outside the window, a crow squawked.

"I see," the teacher said flatly, pinching the bridge of her nose. "Makoto. Lin. Out."

"But—" Lin began, horrified.

"Now."

Makoto was already halfway out the door, still laughing.

Lin groaned as she grabbed her things and stormed out behind him. "You're the worst person alive, Granger."

"Oh come on, 'bowl of cereal' was ICONIC," Makoto wheezed, leaning against the wall. "You've made geography worth living."

Lin glared at him. "One day, I'm going to stuff your nose with dirt. And then say it's a geography experiment."

Inside the classroom, Gou rested his chin on his hand and watched them through the window. Makoto was dramatically miming a lake while Lin was whacking him with a rolled-up notebook.

Gou sighed, his pencil hovering over his half-done diagram. "Why am I even friends with these two?"

No one had the answer. Not even Gou.

But he knew, somehow, he'd still choose them again anyway.

Three classes later, they were left unsupervised due to a teacher's absence. The classroom buzzed as students poured out into the hallways for their hour of freedom.

Makoto stayed back, plopping himself on top of a desk, grinning as he whispered something to Gou. The stoic boy sat across from him, uninterested, as if he was used to it.

"You know we're three here but the two of you are excluding me right now," Lin called out, arms crossed as she stood a few feet away with an exaggerated pout.

Makoto smirked. "We're talking guy stuff. You wouldn't understand—you're a girl and all, y'know."

Lin's jaw dropped. "Excuse you?! We literally watch power rangers together—What are you talking about?!"

"Knock it off, Makoto," Gou interjected with a warning glance.

Makoto laughed sheepishly.

Lin huffed and marched over to the far corner of the classroom, plopping into a chair and turning her back on them.

Makoto nudged Gou. "You better go talk to her. Or she might be mad forever."

Gou didn't respond.

"What if Lin wants you to talk to her? Girls don't say stuff aloud," Makoto whispered with dramatic flair.

That triggered something in Gou. He stood up and walked over to Lin, his neck starting to burn. Not out of nervousness but out of embarrassment.

"Lin, Makoto was talking about gross things," he mumbled, standing beside her desk. "He didn't want you to think we were gross."

She looked up with wide, curious eyes. "Like what?"

Gou hesitated. Lin tugged at his sleeve. "Tell me."

"Some... gross noises."

Lin raised an eyebrow. "Like fart?"

Makoto practically flew out of his chair. "Say that again."

"Fart," Lin repeated, blinking innocently.

Makoto clutched her hand. "You're the coolest."

Gou rubbed his temple. "Both of you need to be more like mature adults."

"But we're not adults," Makoto and Lin said in unison, eyes wide and mocking.

Gou sighed. "Fair enough."

"Where'd you learn about fart noises anyway?" Makoto asked, genuinely curious.

"Uncle Tyson," Lin answered proudly. "He told me my dad farted once during some beybattle. Then we went from Dad's farts to universal farts."

Makoto thought to himself, 'My dad is a legend.'

"Let's just go outside," Gou muttered. "Before I lose all sense of peace." But he knew that with these two around, there wasn't gonna be any peace.

They sat under a tree in the schoolyard, basking in the sunlight. The breeze was gentle, and Makoto hummed a random tune.

A random boy approached Lin, clearly attempting to flirt. Except he approached her from behind.

"Hey, you're cute—" He tapped lightly on her shoulder and—

WHAM.

Lin's reflex kicked in and she punched him. The boy stumbled to the ground, shocked.

Everyone froze—including Lin.

"Oops," she said. "Sorry!"

The guy scrambled off. Gou looked mildly alarmed, Makoto looked impressed.

"That was awesome!" Makoto beamed.

Lin shrugged. "Daddy says I got that from Mom."

Makoto smirked. "You still call your dad daddy? Are you in your little princess era or something?"

Lin gasped. "You're such a meanie, Makoto!"

She socked him in the arm. He fell over.

Gou barely blinked. "Serves you right."

"Ow," Makoto said, rubbing his shoulder. "I was kidding. And why do you keep punching everyone like you're in some wrestling match? It seriously hurts." Makoto groaned.

"Oops?" Lin smirked at him.

"You shouldn't tease anyone like that, in the first place." Gou added with a small frown.

Makoto and Lin exchanged a look and rolled their eyes in perfect sync. Gou was their second parent, and they were used to it.

The rest of their day continued with playful bickering and loud laughter as they continued their classes.

As they walked home, the sun began to dip. Makoto was in the middle, holding both Gou and Lin's hands, singing a ridiculous song about frogs, that he made himself. And then he decided that it'd be funny to switch places with Lin so it was Lin holding both of their hands now. How cool. For Makoto. But for Gou? The case was TOO different...

Lin chimed in, laughing. Gou walked beside them, lips pressed in a straight line—but his ears were burning. Lin held his hand. And he was never washing that hand again.

At Lin's gate, they all stopped.

"Bye guys!" Lin said cheerfully, waving.

"Bye, Lin!" Makoto said, grinning.

"Bye," Gou said softly, his cheeks still pink.

As they walked further down the road, Makoto nudged him.

"So. You had fun holding her hand?"

Gou glared at him. "One day, if you disappear, just know I'm behind it."

Makoto laughed so hard he had to stop walking.

"Oh man. You've so got it bad."

Back at Lin's house...

"I'm home, everyone!" she called, tossing her shoes off.

Her nine-year-old sister Lian popped out from the kitchen, holding a popsicle. She had raven black hair with pink strands, and amber eyes. "Oh, you're in big trouble sis."

Lin blinked. "Huh?"

Mariah emerged from behind her, smiling a bit too sweetly. The kind of smile that spelled doom.

She held out her phone. "Care to explain, young lady?"

Lin paled. It was a text from her geography teacher. About attendance.

"I—uh—it's not what it looks like—"

Before her words could string together, she threw her backpack down, which Lian caught effortlessly, turned on her heel, and bolted out the door.

"SORRY MOM! I'M GOING TO GOU'S FOR HOMEWORK!"

"LIN, COME BACK HERE!!"

But she was already gone.

Lian licked her popsicle casually. "She didn't even take her notebooks. Where's she gonna do her homework?"

Mariah sighed and looked at the door with a tired expression. "That kid is so rebellious I swear it's Ray's fault. She's skipping classes at eleven years old, what would she do at fifteen! My head hurts thinking about it." She rubbed her temples, while texting Hilary to send Lin home before 7.

Lian nodded, "I agree. My head hurts too."She said licking her popsicle.

Mariah scowled, because Lian was just like Lin. Okay maybe a bit more responsible, and a bit less rebellious, since she was younger, but she was sure that her rebelliousness would increase as she grows older.

"Hey I heard the door slam and Lin yell. What'd she do this time?" Ray emerged from the kitchen, with a soda can in his hand.

"Your amazing daughter has been skipping classes to play basketball. How do you feel about that?" Mariah glared at him.

"Is it?" Ray widened his eyes before shrugging. "It's okay I guess? Maybe the lessons are boring. But I'm glad she likes other sports too, apart from beyblading, I'm proud of her." Ray said nodding proudly.

"WHAT?! Ray you're seriously enabling this behaviour?!" Mariah looked at him with disbelief.

"Oh shoot, shit's about to go down." Lian muttered, silently enjoying the drama from the corner.

"I'm not enabling it. But I can't do much about it, since it's her choice at school, so even if I tell her it's her call. Besides she's just like you, so I'd rather blame it on genes." Ray shrugged again.

"Me?! How's she like me?! I didn't skip classes at eleven, Raymond." Mariah raised an eyebrow.

"But you snuck out with your boyfriend at fifteen. At midnight. Despite being grounded." Ray smirked and Mariah's face flushed.

"Okay I'll take it. But how'd you feel if she's sneaking out of the house when she's fifteen years old?" Mariah retorted back.

"I'm cool with everything as long as she's not eloping with a guy." Ray said nonchalantly while drinking his soda, as Mariah gasped dramatically, raising her arms up. "Are you serious right now?!"

"Wow daddy you're so cool." Lian muttered, who had been watching her parents bicker for the last five minutes from the corner, her popsicle now melted and on the floor.

Back with Makoto and Gou...

Makoto walked alongside Gou, dragging his feet dramatically as they turned the corner to his friend's building.

"I swear, I'm not going home until at least 8," Makoto announced. "Mashiro's gonna start screaming the second I enter. I don't even have to breathe, she'll still yell at me." Mashiro was his younger sister. Tyson's second child; a navy haired absolute little menace with blue eyes.

Gou rolled his eyes. "You act like she's a demon. She's six."

"She's a six-year-old demon with a pink toothbrush and a vendetta against me."

Gou sighed. "Fine. You can stay. But don't eat all my snacks again."

"No promises."

They reached the tall building, and Gou tapped the elevator button. "Why do you always act like you own the place?"

"Because I basically live there too," Makoto grinned.

As soon as the elevator doors opened and they stepped inside Kai's spacious penthouse, Makoto kicked off his shoes and yelled, "WE'RE HOME!!"

"This isn't your home," Gou muttered as he locked the door behind them.

Makoto plopped face-first onto the couch like a ragdoll. "Feels like home."

From the hallway, Hilary stepped out, tying her hair into a low ponytail. "Hey boys! You're back already. Everything okay at school?"

"Yup," Gou said.

Makoto sat up excitedly. "Auntie, you won't believe what happened! Lin got caught copying again in geography! And then the teacher asked her a question and she answered something about a late being a big bowl of cereals!"

Hilary burst out laughing. "Oh, dear."

"And then they both got thrown out of class." Gou said, his eyes closed, leaning against the wall (signature Kai Hiwatari pose).

"It was worth it!" Makoto defended.

Hilary chuckled and shook her head. "Honestly, I don't know how your teachers put up with you three."

Makoto leaned over the armrest dramatically. "Auntie please tell my mom I'm going home late. I don't want to fight with Mashiro. I'm emotionally fragile today."

Hilary blinked twice and nodded. "Alright, I'll let her know—"

Ding-dong!

The doorbell interrupted her. Hilary glanced at the clock. "Hmm, Kai's not due back yet…"

She opened the door and blinked in surprise. "Lin?"

There stood Lin, hunched over with her hands on her knees, panting like she'd just run a marathon.

"You didn't come with the boys?"

Lin flashed a grin that revealed her sharp little canines. "Hehe… long story. Can I come in?"

Hilary stepped aside and let her in. "Of course, but—"

"Didn't you go home?" Makoto asked, staring at her in disbelief.

"I did!" Lin huffed. "Then my mom showed me a text from Miss Koyanagi regarding my attendance and I panicked. I had to flee!"

Gou narrowed his eyes. "You ran all the way here?"

"Like my life depended on it. Besides I told her I'll be here for homework in a panic so I had no other option than come here."

At that very moment, Hilary's phone buzzed. She checked it and sighed. "Mariah says to send you home before 7."

Lin gave an innocent smile and flopped onto the carpet next to the couch. "Sure, I'll go home before 7…"

"Do you three want water or something?" Hilary asked.

"JUICE!" Makoto shouted immediately.

"I WANT JUICE TOO!" Lin echoed, raising a hand like it was a school roll call.

Gou massaged his temples as he sat on the couch, next to Makoto. "Manners. Remember those? Or were they part of the history curriculum you both failed?"

Makoto smacked his back playfully. "Chill, man. We've been hanging out here since we were in diapers. This is like our second home."

Gou raised a skeptical brow. "Still not your home."

Lin crawled over dramatically and leaned her chin on Gou's knee. "And I love coming here. I love being around you~"

Gou's ears turned red, as he tried to process what she just said.

Makoto pointed and cackled. "HE'S BLUSHING!"

"Shut up, Granger!"

Hilary returned with a tray of three glasses. "Here, kids. Go to Gou's room. You'll be more comfortable there. And don't forget—both of you go home before 7, okay?"

"Yes, auntie!" Makoto and Lin chorused.

"Thanks, Auntie Hilary!" Lin added sweetly.

They took their drinks and scrambled to Gou's room, juice sloshing slightly as they entered the familiar space. Posters of historical landmarks, old anime and beyblades covered the walls. Makoto immediately sprawled on the bean bag, Lin jumped onto Gou's bed, and Gou settled at his desk.

"So," Makoto began, sipping his juice. "When are we overthrowing the education system?"

"When they stop giving us homework," Lin said, pouting.

Gou looked at them both. "You literally never do it."

Lin grinned. "That's what you're for."

Makoto chuckled. "You're the real MVP, Gou."

Gou sighed again, staring at the ceiling. "Why am I even friends with you two…"

They all laughed. The sun dipped lower, casting a golden glow through the windows. Homework was eventually opened, but mostly ignored. The three friends talked about everything from dinosaurs to who would win in a fight between a velociraptor and Mashiro or if Lian would become a stand up comedian in future.

The penthouse echoed with laughter, loud bickering, and the kind of comfort only childhood friendships could bring.
