Chapter 12
I woke up the next morning to the birds chirping. The sun hadn't risen yet and Ella was still asleep in my paws. I looked down at her. She was so beautiful and innocent, I giggled softly. Then she slowly woke up. Her eyes opened up staring directly into mine. She smiled at me and rolled over onto her belly.
"Mm, morning Zuma," Ella said stretching her front paws.
"Good morning to you two, you've woken up just in time to watch the sun rise," I said.
We both stared out at the horizon as the sun came up. The rising sun made the waves glisten.
"Isn't that beautiful," Ella said.
"It sure is, and just think Ella, I get to wake up to that, every morning on the deck of my ship," I said.
"Oh Zuma, that sounds so nice," Ella said leaning her head on my shoulder.
"Good Morning you two," Chase said walking over to us.
"Hm, oh Hi Chase," I said.
"Did you tow have a good night on the cliff together," Chase said with a mischievous smile.
"I guess you could say that," Ella said.
"Why, did you, K. I. S. S," Chase teased.
"Chase Lee Shepherd, of course not, if I did that, then I'd have to go through Tuck and I'm not sure I want to do that," I said quite annoyed.
"Hey, I was just curious," Chase said throwing his paws up in defense.
I rolled my eyes at Chase. Chase then went and woke up the rest of the pups and we ate breakfast together. I said good by to them before they all went off to their work. Then Ella walked down to the docks with me.
"You will come back right?" Ella asked.
"Of course I will Ella, I always will," I said.
She wrapped her paws around me in a big hug.
"Good bye Ella, I'll see you again soon," I said stroking her fur gently.
"You ready Captain?" Jack asked.
"Yeah mate, I'm ready," I said Climbing aboard the Wellerman.
"Good Bye Zuma," Ella said from the dock.
"Good Bye Ella, stay out of trouble," I said.
"I will, you be safe out there," She said.
"I will, see you soon Ella," I said.
We slowly navigated the ship out into the bay. I took one last look at Ella standing on the dock.
"Lower the sails dogs, Tops Gallants and Royals," I commanded.
"Were too Cap?" Jack asked.
"Greenland, we'll see if we can't get something up there," I said.
"Yes sir, Full speed dogs, we sail for Greenland," Jack yelled.
We sailed for 3 weeks before we reached the lower tip of Greenland. We hunted for a few weeks and caught 3 whales. One day Diego spotted a blue whale a ways off the starboard bow.
"Captain, Blue whale off the starboard bow," Diego said in English.
"Good eye Diego, oh and hey good English," I said.
"Thank you sir, I've been practicing," Diego said with pride.
"Capitán, ¿puedo ir en el barco ballenero esta vez?" (Captain can I come in the whale boat this time,) Antonio asked in Spanish.
"He's wanting to come with us in the whale boat this time," Diego said.
"Sure Antonio, you having trouble with your English?" I asked.
"Eh, no entiendo," (huh I don''t understand,) Antonio said with confusion.
"Te pregunta si tienes problemas con tu inglés," (He's asking you if your having trouble with your English.) Diego said.
"Oh, Y...yes,...s….sir," Antonio said, struggling to find the right words.
"Ha, ha, you'll get it someday buddy," I said.
Antonio looked confused until Diego translated for him.
"Ready the whale boat lads," I said.
Jack and Bay got the longboat ready while Diego and Antonio got the whale line and harpoons ready. Quietly we rowed out to where the whale was playing. Diego handed me a harpoon. I waited for the right time and then harpooned the whale straight through the tail. The whale then started to pull on the line. Antonio started to get another harpoon ready.
Suddenly the whales tail came up out of the water threatening to snap the line. Antonio stood their not quite sure what to do.
"get her before she snaps that tail, Antonio," I commanded.
What I didn't realize was the line was wrapped around Antonio's hind leg! And I had forgotten that he only spoke Spanish. Antonio stood there and looked at me with a scared, confused expression.
"Now Antonio!" I yelled.
But it was too late! The whale slapped its tail down, yanking the whale line, and Antonio, into the ice cold water! The shock wave from the whales tail rocked the boat back and fourth.
"ANTONIO! Oh no, does anyone see him," I screamed, frantically looking for him among-st the rolling waves.
Suddenly his head popped up from a nearby wave. He was struggling to stay a float and gasping for air.
"Their he is, over their," Jack yelled.
Instinctively, the PAW Patrol water rescue pup in me kicked in. I leaped into the water and swam over to him. Then I noticed that the whale was still attached to the line and every time it tugged on the line, it pulled Antonio underwater.
I pulled out my whalers fishing knife and cut the line around his leg. Then I used my
PAW Patrol: Sea patrol lifeguard training to swim him back to the whale boat. We quickly rowed back to the Wellerman.
"Bobby, Skipper, I need a fire in my cabins cook stove, now," I commanded.
"Yes sir," Skipper said.
Lucky, Marshal had taught me how to do CPR, and I was able to get Antonio breathing again. But what concerned me was his leg. It looked like it had been fixed on backwards.
"Oh, eek, a dog's leg is not suppose to look like that. Ouch, he needs medical help captain, the sooner the better," Jack said.
"Yeah, your Right Jack. Max, Star, set a course for New York City," I said.
"New York, why not one of the closer Canadian city's?" Jack said.
"Jack, I only speak English," I said.
"Okay, fair enough," Jack said.
Bay and Skipper helped me gently move Antonio to my cabin. I stayed their with him until we reached New York, about a week and a half later.. once we arrived we quickly got him to a veterinary clinic so the doctors could take care of his poor leg.
The damage was more severe then I had thought. All three bones in his leg had been shattered, as well as his hip bone had been fractured. The doctors said that he was lucky to still have his leg and that he would be out of action for months. I felt so bad, like I was responsible for the accident.
Late that night the crew and I went out to a bar. I sat down at the counter and put my head in my paws. I then started blaming myself for Antonio's injury.
"I shouldn't have let him go out their with us," I said.
"Hey now don't you start to think that this is some how your fault Cap. Whaling has it's risks, this things happen okay," Jack said.
"Jack, the Captain is responsible for everyone on his ship. I shouldn't have let him go out their and I should have checked the line to make sure it was ready before we harpooned the beast. And I shouldn't have yelled at him in English when he only speaks Spanish," I said.
I sighed and laid 15 reales down on the counter. The bar tender came and gave me a 16 oz dog bowl and a bottle of canine whiskey. I filled the bowl up to the rim and lapped down the whiskey without second thought. I set some more reales down and received two more bottles of whiskey. I wasn't trying to regulate my drinking this time. No, this time I was trying to medicate the mental pain in my mind. So I just kept on drinking.
Soon my vision became slightly blurred. I still wasn't completely drunk, so I gave up some more reales. The bar tender went to the back to get more bottles, as I had already downed 4 24 oz bottles of the vile liquid. But out of the cornier of my eye, through my blurred vision, I noticed to dogs approaching me. It was hard to tell exactly what breeds they were, but it looked to me like a big great Dane, and a muscular pit bull. The two dogs got on ether side of me.
"What do you want mutts," I slurred.
"Revenge," Growled the Great Dane.
"Ha, for what," I said lapping up more whiskey.
"You Killed our friends," Growled the Pit Bull with an angry scowl.
"Excuse me fur ball, I haven't killed anyone."
"Oh yeah, word on the street is that Zuma Labrador slaughtered the crew of Captain Black fur."
"And how do you know that I'm this Zuma Labrador," I bluffed.
"I'd know your face anywhere Dog, your from the famed PAW Patrol, and you killed our friends who were crew members on the Black Paw," Growled the Dane angrily.
"Finally somebody knows my name. Even if it is a matted ball of fur like you," I said sarcastically.
"Don't play games with me Dog," The Dane yelled, landing a quick blow to the side of my head.
I was sent flying off the bar stool and landed hard on the ground. I reached up and felt my head, I felt warm Blood slowly trickling down my cheek.
"Hey now, nobody hits our Captain," Jack yelled, jumping up to fight the Dane.
I stood up, despite my blurred vision and drunken mind, and tried to fight the pit bull. I threw some weak punches at the Pit bull. Unfortunately I missed both shots and received a hard blow to the stomach and my jaw. Then Bay and Skipper came to my Aid. While my crew fought off the Attackers I stumbled backwards and fell on the floor.
I don't remember much after that. When I could see straight, and think clearly again, I was in a hospital bed with some bandages wrapped around my head. I didn't know but that whole little fiasco was broadcast-ed on the news. And Tuck and Ella were watching it back home in Adventure Bay.
"Uh, Ella, you might want to take a look at this one," Tuck said.
Ella came in and sat down with her Brother. The headline read, "Famous Paw Patroller, Zuma Labrador, Attacked by Pirate Sympathizers."
"uh-oh," Ella said.
The news report continued.
"We now have information that the Famous PAW Patroller and Captain of one of the last wooden whaling ships, Zuma Labrador, was viciously assaulted by two dogs in a New York City Bar," Said the news reporter.
The news screen then turned to their corresponded in New York who was on the seine.
"Thank you Tom, I am Currently on the seine of the Attack, Paramedics have already taken Zuma to the hospital to be treated for his wounds. Witnesses say that Zuma and his Crew were drinking in the Bar room and Having a good time, when two rather large Dogs came up and started throwing punches. Zuma was hit multiple times on the head and a few times on the stomach," Said the news corresponded.
"Oh Poor pup," Tuck said.
"What do we know about the Attackers so far," Asked Tom, the News Reporter.
"The attackers have been arrested and are being held at the New York City Police department. So far all we know about them is they were supposedly Sympathizers of the infamous pirate Captain Black Fur. A few months ago, Zuma and his Crew Allegedly defeated The infamous pirate in a naval battle with some help from the legendary Mer-pup army. According to Zuma and his crew, none of the pirates survived the attack and the dogs claimed to have had friends who were killed by the Mer-pups," Said the corresponded.
"Oh dear," Ella said.
"Do you think we should tell the Rest of the PAW Patrol?" Tuck asked.
"You can, I've got to go," Ella said.
"Whoa wait a minuet, where are you going so late?" Tuck asked.
"I've got to go see Zuma," Ella said getting on her motorcycle gear.
"Ella that's almost a fifteen hour drive, why do you have to go right now," Tuck said.
Ella grabbed her keys and stopped at the door to answer her brother.
"Because I love him too much to let him go down that road alone," Ella said heading out the door.
At the time I didn't realize that Ella loved me that much. She drove all the way from Adventure Bay to New York City. I was laying on the hospital bed contemplating the meaning of life, when Ella walked into the room to talk with me.
"Zuma Caspian Labrador, What has the world done to you," Ella said.
I looked up at her with shock. I was completely speechless.
"Ella…. Wha…" I stammered.
Ella wrapped her paws around me.
"W…what are you doing here?" I asked.
"I came to help you," Ella said in a calm, kind manner.
"How did you know?" I asked.
"Ha, you were on the news buddy," Ella said.
"Oh, I was, what did those pesky news reporters say about me," I said with annoyance.
"Oh, just that you had been Drunk in a bar and then got attacked by pirate sympathizer," Ella said.
"Oh, ah, news reporters don't let you keep any secrets don't they," I said.
"Zuma stop trying to avoid it," Ella scolded.
"Avoid, what," I said as innocently as I could.
"The fact that you were drunk."
"Oh, Yeah, That," I said frantically looking for an excuse.
"You want to tell me why?" Ella asked.
"My past Ella, Past mistakes, past hurts, and the fact that my life is totally worthless," I said.
"Zuma that is not true. I didn't drive all the way up here for a worthless, drunk dog," Ella said.
"Really? 'Cause that's what I am right now, a stupid, worthless, drunk, mutt. What's the point of life if all you do is get a job, spend all your earnings on alcohol, and then repeat," I said.
"Zuma I drove all the way here for a dog who I love with all my heart. I've loved you ever since we met and I love you too much to let you go down this path," Ella said.
"And how do you propose I fix this mess. The hole I've dug myself into is too deep, are you really willing to save a drunkard like me?" I said.
"Yes Zuma, I am, and Jesus is more willing to help then I am," Ella said.
She reached into her pack and pulled out an ESV Bible and laid it on my paws.
"Book of Romans. Read it Zuma, and until you do, I don't want to see you again. Please Zuma, I love you too much to let you ruin your life, may God guide you," Ella said, leaving me alone in the room.
Outside she stopped. She shivered with sadness and fear, then knelt down and prayed.
"Lord Jesus, please help him, guide his heart to you, please oh God, he needs you, Amen," Ella said.
Ella then went back to Adventure Bay. I was released from the hospital latter that day. We stayed in New York until Antonio was released from the hospital. Even though he was confined to a set of motorized wheels to help him walk, he was still willing to help with whatever he could on the ship.
We all got on board and set sail for Norway. I went to my cabin and sat down. I took out the Bible that Ella had given me, and turned to the book of Romans. I loved Ella too much to be separated from her permanently. So I started reading and read long into the night. But what was about to happen, nothing could have prepared me for.
Hm, Ella really loves him that much, what will happen next, remember, Black Fur is still alive, the final battle is yet to come, find out what happens next time on PAW Patrol: The Wellerman.
