The rain beat down hard on the Efrafan Patrol, as crows watched them from the tree's, Vervain grunted as he felt the elements bash against his face, Suddenly, from out of the sky, Kehear swooped down at them, causing him and his patrol to scatter momentarily.

"Go avay stinking enemies!" He jeered. "You never find our Warren!"

Vervain scowled as the Gull flew away.

"Um, Sir." Said a young Rabbit named Oakleaf. "Perhaps we should follow his line of flight, maybe he could lead us to the Outsiders Warren."

"We've already tried that." Said Vervain in exasperation. "But he's too sly to make a mistake like that, anyway, we'd best get a move on, Wolfsbane, scout ahead, see If you can pick up a scent."

Wolfsbane hopped off to obey, leaving the rest of the Rabbits to hope after him, one Rabbit though, a sickly one with droopy ears, fell to the ground in exhaustion, and the only one to notice was Corporal Moss.

"Captain Vervain!" He called out, halting the procession. "It's Larch! He's sick! He can't go on!"

Vervain looked at Larch for a moment. "Then leave him." He said coldly, and he and the others moved on, Moss took one sad look at Larch and followed suit, just as a flock of crows began to circle around the poor rabbit's cold body.

Meanwhile,

Kehear returned to Watership Down and entered the warren, where he found all the Rabbits, taking shelter from the rain inside the Honeycomb.

"Nice day out there." He exclaimed, ruffling his feathers and getting raindrops everywhere. "All wet!"

"So why don't you stay out there?" Muttered Hawkbit as he got soaked.

Hazel hopped up. "Hello Kehear, what's the news?"

"Efrafa Patrols all over." Said Kehear. "Saw Vervain not far away, Ugh, he still one ugly Rabbit."

"What do you think will happen if Woundwort finds us?" Asked Fiver.

"He'll attack with everything he has, unless we give him what he wants." Said Bigwig, turning to Hyzenthlay, as she nuzzled her kits.

"And we know that will never happen." Said Hyzenthlay.

"And our Owsla isn't strong enough for him." Added Captain Holly. "We'd be wiped out."

"We've got to keep thinking up strategies to keep the Efrafan's away." Said Holly.

"False trails aren't enough." Said Hazel. "We need to do more… What if we attacked Efrafa from the inside? If we had someone in Efrafa willing to stand against him and the Council."

"He'd have to be fearless or Mad." Concluded Bigwig.

"Well…" Said Captain Holly, as he pondered. "What about Campion, I can't imagine he likes the way Woundwort runs Efrafa."

Hyzenthlay was aghast. "You can't be serious!" She said indignantly.

"An Owsla Captain, betray his chief?!" Scoffed Bigwig, almost laughing, he stopped suddenly as everyone turned to him. "Okay the Threarah was completely different!"

"You're right." Said Holly. "The Threarah wasn't Woundwort."

"And wouldn't you turn against Woundwort If he really was your chief?" Asked Hazel.

Bigwig considered these words. "...I think I'd have to."

Meanwhile,

In Efrafa itself, the very Rabbit himself stood watch as the Neck Mark silflayed, making sure none of them tried to run.

The Rain bucketed down upon them as the Rabbits ate miserably, as if they didn't care about Living anymore.

"Right." Said the Mark Captain. "Silflay's over, everyone back underground."

The Neck Mark Rabbits scurried down the run as the next Mark emerged, Campion sighed as he himself went down the runs, his mind in despair at the state of Efrafa.

Meanwhile,

Back at the Down, Hazel, Fiver, Bigwig, Hyzenthlay, Blackavar, Pipkin and Holly prepared to journey out through the back tunnels, and left behind instructions for Blackberry, Hawkbit and Dandelion.

"Stay alert for Efrafan patrols." Said Hazel. "And make sure no one strays too far from the Warren."

"With this sort of weather, that won't be a problem." Said Dandelion.

"You really think Campion will defect to our side?" Asked Hawkbit.

"Pfft, I doubt it." Hyzenthlay spat.

"All we can do is ask." Said Hazel, he turned to the others. "Right, let's go."

And so they headed off, down the Tunnels to the caverns and to the caverns leading to Efrafa.

Meanwhile,

Back in Efrafa, Campion was addressing General Woundwort directly, without the Council.

"The marks need more time above ground." Said Campion. "We must allow them to range farther for food."

"They have enough." Woundwort said dismissively.

"General, are weak, some are Ill." Persisted Campion. "If disease breaks out they'll all die."

"Then we'll sort out the sickly ones and keep them in the deep burrows." Said the General. "That will quarantine ourselves AND deter any further escapes from Efrafa, anything else bothering you Campion?"

"Yes Sir." Said Campion. "The continued patrols for Thlayli and his warren are destroying the Owsla, they're exhausted and weak, and they're also getting sick! We're losing too many Corporals and Sergeants to Carrion Birds."

"Then find the Outsiders, Warren Captain." Said Woundwort. "Bring me Thlayli, Hyzenthlay and their Captain Holly and it all stops!"

He turned back to his burrow. "You have a patrol to lead, dismissed."

And he left, Campion sighed. "Yes Sir."

The Captain lamented his chief's ignorance and for a split second, he wished he could give the General a good kick up the backside.

Meanwhile,

In the Caverns, The seven Rabbits reached the secret entrance to Efrafa territory, the small stream had grown bigger than the last time they were here.

"Wow, look how high the stream's getting." Said Bigwig.

"All the rain I suppose." Mused Fiver.

Pipkin dipped his footpaw in the water and shivered. "Lots of cold rain."

Hyzenthlay took a step back without saying a word, Hazel noticed this and made his way over to her.

"You're awfully quiet Hyzenthlay, what's wrong?" He asked.

"Efrafa's out there." She said, "So close… I still have Nightmares about it… Woundwort finds me and takes me back, and I'm there forever and ever."

She shivered at the thought. "I'll be fine Hazel, I'll… do my part, such as it is."

"That's all I can ask of you." Said Hazel.

"Alright, if we're going." Said Bigwig, as he jumped into the water, Fiver, Holly, and Blackavar followed, Pipkin was next to jump in and shivered.

They made their way out of the hole in the stream and saw the Bridge leading to Efarafa, they hopped onto the shore, just as Kehear swooped around from up high.

"Took you long enough!" He said. "Kehear ready for action!"

And so they made their way to the bridge to find Campion.

Meanwhile,

On the other side of the Bridge, Campion stood with his patrol, and gave them a pep talk.

"Right, I know you're all tired." Said Campion. "But the future of Efrafa depends on us finding Thlayli and his Warren, let's do it this time."

And so they set off onto the bridge, when suddenly Kehear swooped in to attack them, he knocked two Rabbits into the River and sent the others running away.

"Come back!" Cried Campion. "Your Owsla!"

Kehear made to swoop at Campion next, but the Owsla Captain swiped a claw at Kehear, narrowly missing him, as he watched Kehear fly off, Blackavar suddenly appeared on the bridge.

"Hello Captain." He said. "Looking for me?"

"Blackavar?" Campion asked, he hopped closer. "Why come back now?"

Blackavar didn't say anything, Instead, Campion suddenly found himself pinned down by Thlayli himself as he and Captain Holly quickly subdued him.

"Settle down now, Campion." Said Bigwig, as Campion struggled to free himself.

"We just want to talk, Campion." Said Holly.

Campion relented. "Seems I have no choice."

And so, after they let him up, Campion followed them to behind a bush, where Hazel, Fiver, Hyzenthlay and Pipkin were waiting, The Doe in particular giving Campion a scathing look.

"Hello Campion." Said Hazel, stepping forward. "Before we start, there are a few things to address, Firstly, You are to give your words as an officer that you won't run, attack us or do anything until you hear us out."

"You have it." Said Campion, unsure who this Rabbit was, while glaring at Bigwig. "Unlike your chief rabbit here, my word actually means something."

Hyzenthlay gave him an even more loathsome look, before Bigwig stopped her.

"Don't mind her lass." Bigwig said. "He's just got a stiff neck about me spying on Efrafa."

"Well he isn't the only one with a stiff neck, is he Bigwig?" Hyzenthlay snapped.

"Bigwig?" Campion was surprised. "So your names not evan Thlayli."

"Of course it is." Bigwig said. "Friends just call me Bigwig."

"And you're no friend." Hyzenthlay snarled, cutting off the buck.

"Oh Hyzenthlay, you wound me." Campion said sarcastically. "Really, I think I might cry."

"Oh you mean like Primrose cried?" Hyzenthlay heatedly asked.

Campion leered angrily. "Don't you DARE use that name!"

"Enough!" Said Bigwig, getting in front of Hyzenthlay. "We came to talk, not open old wounds!"

"I'd listen to your chief If I were you." Campion said condescendingly to Hyzenthlay.

"Bigwig's not our chief." Said Pipkin.

Campion blinked. "What?"

"I am." Said Hazel, Campion whirled around in surprise. "Y-You?!

"Yes, Me." Said Hazel pointedly. "My name is Hazel."

"I…" Campion shook his head. "N-Never mind, My Owsla will come looking for me, what do you have to say?"

"This war between our Warrens is hurting all of us." Said Hazel. "It has to stop."

"It will." Said Campion in an icy voice. "When you've been wiped out."

"Easier said than done, mate." Said Bigwig.

"Woundwort preaches hate and violence." Said Holly. "You don't believe in those things, not from what I've seen."

Campion was silent for a moment. "He's my chief."

"And yet, you've risked your life to stop his cruelty." Said Blackavar. "You protected Primrose as best you could."

"And then she tried to leave Efrafa!" Campion said heatly.

"Because life inside Efrafa." Said Hyzenthlay. "Without Freedom or hope, isn't worth living! She knew that."

"If you truly loved her." Blackavar went on. "Then help what she died for, Help Efrafa."

"Hmmp, How?" Campion demanded.

"Turn those under your command against Woundwort." Said Hazel. "Take Command, save your people!"

Campion looked away, conflicted.

"We'll see you again at Frith-Down." Said Hazel. "You can give us your answer then."

And the Rabbits turned to leave, one by one, Campion noticed Blackavar and Hyzenthlay leaving.

"Hyzenthlay, Blackavar!" He called. "Are you and the others happy where you are?"

The pair stopped and looked back.

"I've got a litter of kits where I am now." Said Hyzenthlay. "And a doting mate, so yes, I am Happy."

And she left, while Blackavar took one last look at Campion.

"Primrose would have been too." He said, as he left to join her.

Campion stayed where he was, his head hung low.

Meanwhile,

Vervain and his patrol were making their return to Efrafa, when they spotted the Outsiders moving off from the bridge.

"The Outsiders!" Vervain gasped, and then he noticed Campion, exiting from a bush and leaving in the opposite direction.

"Take cover!" Vervain ordered his patrol as they ducked down and watched Campion leave, Vervain turned his attention to Thlayli's band.

"Friths gave us the chance for glory." Vervain murmured excitedly. "Get the Outsiders!"

And they scurried over the bridge and chased after the Outsiders, as Kehear called out to them.

"Run like bunnies!" He cried out. "Vervain coming!"

The Rabbits quickly made a break for it, and hurried to the willow tree, while Vervain and his minions chased after them.

"Stay off the sand!" Said Bigwig as they neared the bank. "No tracks!"

And so they jumped onto the rocks and hurried into the reeds as Vervain caught up to them too late.

"What? Where did they go?!" He asked desperately. "Spread out! Find them!"

Moss, Oakleaf, Wolfsbane and the others quickly fanned out around the area, and found nothing.

"No sign of them Sir." Said Moss. "No tracks, and the rains washed away any scent."

Vervain was flabbergasted. "Gone like mist… again!"

"Should we keep looking, Sir?" Asked Wolfsbane.

"No." Vervain decided. "Let's ask Captain Campion, he acted like he didn't notice them."

And he hurried off, followed by his Owsla.

"Move out!" He ordered. "That's right move out, get a move on!"

Meanwhile,

Pipkin was nearest to the tunnel and listened closely.

"I think they're going away." He said to the others.

Hazel turned to Hyzenthlay. "I know that wasn't easy for you back there."

"Honestly he looks a lot thinner and sadder than before." Said Hyzenthlay. "Things must really be bad at Efrafa."

"So you think he'll throw in with us?" Asked Fiver.

"Maybe if things are bad enough." Said Bigwig. "It's a hard thing to betray your chief, even If he is Woundwort."

"But if Vervain saw us with Campion." Said Blackavar. "He may not have the chance."

Meanwhile,

Campion soon returned to Efrafa, and was met by Moss and Sainfoin.

"We wondered when you'd get back." Said Moss, as Campion followed them.

"The Council is waiting for your report." Said Sainfoin. "The General is with them."

Campion nodded grimly as the three Rabbits entered the chamber, where Council and Woundwort were waiting, along with Vervain, Orchis and Bartsia.

"You're overdue Captain Campion." Noted Snowdrop. "What kept you?"

"I was touring the perimeter." Campion said. "Thinking."

"You were not ordered to tour the perimeter." Said a Counselor. "You were supposed to be leading the next patrol to search for the Outsiders!"

"Some of them also came back, claiming to have been attacked by their white bird!" Added Another. "Captain Vervain, would you repeat what you've already told us?"

Vervain stepped forward. "I was coming back with my own patrol, and saw Thlayli and his band of Outsiders, and I also saw Captain Campion, hopping away from them! There was no chase, no attempt at capture on his part, he didn't even seem to acknowledge their presence! …Would you explain this?"

Campion paused. "I would."

Orchis raised an eyebrow. "You were meeting with them, weren't you?"

"Yes." Said Campion, and a murmur followed.

"Why would you do that?" Asked Snowdrop.

"Because they asked me to betray Efrafa." Said Campion.

An audible gasp rang out across the chamber, Vervain was shocked too, but secretly elated.

"And?" Asked Snowdrop.

"I let them believe I would." Said Campion. "They'll lead me to their Warren, then we'll destroy them all."

Woundwort had not made a sound the entire time, but he finally let out a low chuckle that made everyone's spines shiver, as he spoke for the first time.

"You're a Rabbit after my own heart Captain Campion." He said. "Now we've got them, we will grind their bones… He He He He He He He."

Meanwhile,

"Bobstone guess is… one." Said Bigwig after a pause.

Fiver removed his paws to reveal the guess was incorrect, making Bigwig grunt, Pipkin soon came back from the outside.

"It's nearly sunset." He said as he shivered from the cold water. "I think, I couldn't tell, it was still raining."

"We'd better get to the meeting place." Said Hazel. "Hyzenthlay, Pipkin, you two stay here, Everyone else with me."

"What if it's a trap?" Asked Hyzenthlay. "What if you're wrong about Campion?!"

"That's why you're not coming." Said Hazel, as he, Bigwig, Fiver, Holly and Blackavar waded into the water and headed outside.

"They'll be alright." Said Pikpin. "They're the smartest Rabbits in the world, except for El-ahrairah of course."

Outside, Hazel, Fiver, Bigwig, Holly and Blackavar met with Kehear.

"I try to scout the woods." He explained. "But it's bad seeing, could be army of Efrafa hiding in mist!"

"I suppose we'll just have to risk it then." Said Hazel, he turned to Kehear. "Stay close and keep out of sight."

Kehear nodded as the Rabbits ventured into the woods, they found Campion, standing alone in an open part of the forest.

"Well Campion." Said Hazel. "Have you thought things over?"

"I have." Said Campion. "And you're right, there's no reason for our Warrens to fight, it's time to end this madness."

"Well said Campion." Said Bigwig. "It's a new day for all of us."

"Ha! It's your last day, Thlayli!"

All heads turned to see Vervain charging out of the mist, followed by Moss, Orchis, Sainfoin, Chervil, and several other Rabbits under their command, surrounding the six surprised Rabbits.

"We might fall, but you'll die before me, Campion!" Bigwig snarled.

"I had no Idea about this Bigwig." Said Campion as he swiftly stood by their side. "If we fall, we fall together.

Vervain gasped and spluttered at Campion declaration. "Oh, O-Oh! I knew you were a traitor, Campion! Attack! KILL THEM ALL!

As the Efrain's surrounded them, Campion spoke.

"When I move, move with me!" He whispered.

"Not sure I trust you anymore sport." Said Bigwig as Vervain and Moss leered at them.

"We've nothing to lose." Said Hazel.

Orchis was the first to attack, launching at Holly, but Blackavar quickly knocked him back! Campion surged forward too, knocking Vervain to the ground and trampling him, the other Watership Rabbits followed him through this gap, knocking back any Efrafans that tried to stop them, Vervain got to his feet and scowled. "TEAR THEM UP!"

"They went that way!" Chervil shouted. "Get them!"

The Rabbits quickly hurried out of the woods and fled down to the riverbank.

"We should be able to outrun them!" Said Campion. "They're exhausted!"

Hazel looked back to see six of the Rabbits chasing them, tumbling into the river.

"He's Right!" He said.

"Once we've lost them, we'll need some place to hide!" Said Campion.

"The caverns!" Suggested Blackavar.

"No! Somewhere else!" Said Bigwig.

"I have an Idea!" Said Campion. "Follow me!"

And they swerved up the hill and turned back towards the forest!

Meanwhile,

Hyzenthlay hopped back and forth along the cavern, as Pipkin played with a pebble.

"They should have been back by now." Muttered Hyzenthlay.

"If you want, I can go check to see if they're back." Said Pipkin as he hopped towards the stream.

He wadded into the water and it suddenly seemed to pull him along with the current! "I can't touch the bottom! He scraped against the shore, but he kept getting pulled away. "Hyzenthlay!"

"I'm coming!" The Doe cried as he hurried to catch Pipkin, but the water swept him outside and he was carried away down the stream, Hyzenthlay tried to catch up, but the current was too strong, and he had to climb down to shore. "Pipkin! PIPKIN!"

Meanwhile,

The Efrafan Rabbits came across a herd of Cattle and looked everywhere for the Outsiders.

"Fan out!" Cried Vervain. "We can't lose them again!"

The Efrafans scattered and searched the Cows, who mooed and shoved them away with their tails, giving the Rabbits the stink eye as they searched.

All the while, Hazel, Fiver, Bigwig, Holly, Blackavar and Campion concealed themselves in a cluster of cows, eating by a large sty, and watched as the Efarafans left.

"We lost them a little too easily, Don't you think?" Asked Bigwig.

"It was supposed to be harder." Campion retorted.

"What are you playing at Campion?" Questioned Hazel.

"And just what are the rules?" Fiver added.

"Woundwort planned the ambush." Said Campion. "You're supposed to think I'm on your side now."

"And are you?" Asked Blackavar.

"I wouldn't be telling you this If I wasn't." Said Campion. "I'm expected to find your Warren and report back, I don't like this… I don't know who I am anymore."

The other rabbits whispered amongst themselves.

"Is he really on our side or is it just an act?" Asked Hazel.

"I really don't know anymore." Bigwig shook his head.

"This is all so un-rabbit like." Said Holly.

Before any more could be said, A Voice cried out "Pipkin! Where are you?!"

They all quickly followed the source and found Hyzenthlay hurried across the bank, calling out for Pipkin!

"Hyzenthlay?!" Hazel asked, as he caught up to his mate. "What are you doing?!"

"Pipkin was swept out onto the water!" Hyzenthlay explained frantically. "I've looked for him, But I don't think he made it to shore! Frith forgive me!"

"If he's alive, we'll find him." Said Campion.

Hyzenthlay rounded on Campion. "If there was no Efrafa, No Woundwort, we wouldn't be out here! Pipkin would still be here!"

Campion looked down at his footpaws. "I'm sorry."

Hyzenthlay just turned and hurried down the bank, just as Kehear landed.

"What's wrong? Bad thing happen?!" Asked Kehear.

"Very bad." Said Hazel as he turned to Fiver. 'Fiver, Blackavar, you two and Kehear go after Hyzenthlay, be careful."

The two Rabbits and the gull hurried off, leaving Hazel alone with Bigwig, Holly and Campion.

"So what do we do now?" Asked Bigwig.

"I'm going back to Efrafa, I'll tell Woundwort you saw through my ploy." Said Campion. "And than I'll work against him in secret."

"You're mad!" Said Holly. "They won't believe you!"

"I can make them believe it." Said Campion, turning to Bigwig. "If you help, It has to look like I fought back, You understand, don't you Bigwig."

Bigwig nodded as he looked at Hazel and Holly. "I'll take care of it, you two go."

Hazel and Holly left to go look for Pipkin, leaving Bigwig and Campion alone. "I'll make it quick, Campion."

Campion closed his eyes as Bigwig raised his claws.

Afterwards,

Bigwig soon caught up with the others, as they stared out across the river.

"Still no sign of Pipkin." Said Hyzenthlay. "Campion?"

Bigwig nodded and the Rabbits set off up the bank, calling out for Pipkin.

Meanwhile,

From his perch, Woundowrt smiled down at the newcomer, chuckling.

"You're lucky my Captains found you, my kit." He said slyly.

Pipkin stood before the General, surrounded by Vervain, Orchis, Moss and Chervil as they presented him to the General.

"I-I won't tell you anything." Said Pipkin nervously. "Y-You might as well kill me… thought I'd appreciate it if you… didn't."

"What stories have you been told of me?" Woundwort asked with mock hurt. "I wouldn't do that, you're my guest."

He gestured to Bartisa. "Show this young one to the best burrows in Efrafa, and ensure he gets fresh Falyrah, from my personal stores."

Pipkin was surprised. "Er… thank you General." He said as an Owslafa officer led him away.

Woundwort sneered. "I'll have the young rip thinking I'm his dear old uncle before long." He said to himself, just as Sainfoin entered the chambers.

"Er, Captain Campion's returned sir," He said. "He's in his quarters."

Later,

Woundwort made his way to Campions burrow and found the brown Rabbit on the floor, covered in bruises and cuts.

"They… They didn't believe me, General." Campion croaked. "They almost killed me, I had to fight my way out."

Woundwort examined his injured Captain. "I suppose I wouldn't have believed you either Captain, It doesn't matter."

He left the burrow with a smile on his face. "I have a new game to play now."

Campion got up and looked and watched the General retreat, wondering what he meant.

Meanwhile,

The Rabbits neared the Efrafan bridge when a voice called out to them.

"Outsiders! I know you're out there!"

The Rabbits retreated into the tall grass as a procession of Efrafan Soldiers appeared, led by Captain Groundsel, all escorting the familiar white Doe, Snowdrop.

"I am Snowdrop!" Declared Snowdrop. "Head of the Council of Efrafa, General Woundwort, sends you a message! To the traitor, Thlayli, you and all those you have taken from Efrafa and all the three other Outsiders who escaped from the Right Flank Mark, are to surrender by the the time the moon is round, or you will never see the one known as Pipkin, alive again!"

The Rabbits listened to this dreadful message, horror struck.

"Remember!" Finished Snowdrop. "By the time the moon is round!"

And so the Efrafans left, as the Rabbits of Watership Down gazed helplessly on.

"No…" Bigwig buried his claws in the ground.

"What now?" Asked Fiver, voicing everyones thoughts.

Hazel said nothing, he just stared up at the moon with growing dread.
