Tammy sat on the patio by the back yard pool. It was August. A hundred and one in the shade was perfectly normal around here, but some of the guests at her parents' pool party were from back east and up north, and the comments about the temperature were non-stop.
"You should just go swim," her mother suggested at one point, coming out with more drinks.
"Why? I don't want to swim with a bunch of old men."
"Tammy, these are your father's colleagues!"
Tammy rolled her eyes. "And that's supposed to make me want to jump in?"
"Good point."
