The Mystery of the Pills

January 20th, 2005 – Desmond Conolly's POV

I didn't get a dream last night. Strange... and disappointed. I was looking forward to seeing if my mind had anything in storage of those mysterious dreams. But what was even stranger was the whereabouts of Evelyn. After getting ready for school and descending downstairs, she was nowhere to be seen in the kitchen nor in the living room. Without her presence, the atmosphere has shifted. George seemed unusually relieved, which made me wonder about his true feelings towards Evelyn. He told me that Evelyn is in the hospital, and she'll be at home in the afternoon. George explained that Evelyn was attacked by an animal while they were hiking at dusk. I honestly felt slightly guilty for feeling relief that I won't be able to deal with her this morning.

However, it does raise a question as to why they would be hiking in the woods at that hour. George and Evelyn are not the type to go out hiking. They've never done that when we spent back in Canada as they were busy at work or taking care of me. In fact, it is stupid and dangerously to hike while the sun is setting down.

During lunch, there was a mix of reactions to the upcoming examination day. Some students were annoyed, while others seemed excited about the presence of Dr. Carlisle Cullen. The School Board must have sent them through via email last night. They must have been desperate to push this project moving forward as they want the examination day this coming Monday.

George signed the papers with no issues, and it never raised his suspicions. He found it normal for schools to have examination days. He even commented on how much he misses those days because the nurses are sometimes attractive, especially the blonde ones. I can see why he chose Evelyn, but she's not the taste to be in a magazine model.

SLAM...

Everyone's eyes gaze up to the cause of noise that tremble the table, Lauren had her faceplanted on the table while releasing a groan. Her hand in possession of a paper, the same one that all students are required to hand it over to the doctors when Monday arrives. I can understand her frustration; some students have mixed feelings about this examination day.

"Argh! This is so retarded! Why do I have to be examined if I'm not even in sports."

Lauren throws the paper in the center of the table. Angela sighs while rolling her eyes. She reaches in to grab it and reads carefully before show casing everyone, pointing her index finger at the bottom page.

"Maybe this will change your mind, Lauren." said Angela.

Lauren peaks her head up as strands of her hair moved out of the way to give her access of her eyesight. And after a few seconds, she immediately sits up with a beaming smile on her face while fixing her hair. Her cheeks began to form pinkish on the surface of her skin.

"Never mind! This is a brilliant idea!"

Lauren spoke with a now positive attitude. Everyone in the table looked back at the paper and now noticed a list of four doctors who will be performing the examination. And one of them happens to be Dr. Carlisle Cullen.

'Looks like someone fancies Dr. Cullen.' I thought. Tyler throws his hands up and groans in frustration.

"When did the Cullens ever butt in for this community aside their dad being the best surgeon in our hospital? Do they really want the spotlight forever until we graduate?"

"Dude! Look on the bright side. We're getting the new building when we get back in our senior year. The girls can keep the old building to themselves, and we won't have to worry about practicing with them." said Mike.

"As if! You boys can keep the ugly one. We'll keep the new one fine and clean unlike you dirty boys." said Jessica.

The trio began to bicker at each other on who gets the new building. I lost my interest to their conversation as well as Bella, Angela, and Ben. Lauren, on the other hand, seem to ogle into dreamy space while continuing to fix her hair. Jessica hasn't made another move towards Bella, so I prefer to keep it that way and Eric occasionally gives me a side eye glare when I'm not looking.

However, something else caught my attention as my eye's gazes over at the Cullen's table. Everyone in the table is talking normally among themselves like any other day, but except for Emmett. His face is twisted in pain, his eyes squinted, his eyebrows frowned together, and his lips pressed into thin line. Both of his hands are tapping impatiently on the table and his legs are crossed over to each other.

"What's up with Emmett?" asked Bella in a whisper.

"I don't know..."

"Yeah, I noticed it too."

Bella and I looked over to our left to see Angela joining in our conversation as she kept her voice low. She expresses a concern look, and her soften with sympathy.

"He looks like he's in a lot of pain." Angela continued, not breaking away from him.

Bella and I looked back at him. He began to bang lightly on the table with his forehead. Jasper and Alice just minded their business as they continue to cuddle at each other lovingly. Edward grinned at him while Rosalie smirked as she observed an apple. Sometimes she would glance at him occasionally.

"I think he needs to use the restroom. He could just go in there and whip it out to deal with it."

The second those words came out of my mouth; Emmett raised his head up and stares at me with a deepened frown. The corner of his lips curled downward. It wasn't an angry look, more so like he's irritated. Edward, Jasper, and Alice lightly boomed with laughter. Rosalie looks up and smiled widely at me, her eyes express a knowing look. 'Did I do something against him?!'

Angela raises her eyebrows as if taken aback at the mere coincidence.

"Wow… they reacted as if they heard you."

"Yeah…" Bella agrees.

I agree with them, it is questionable as to why they are laughing after I commented. The lunchroom is filled with noise of student's chattering and laughing amongst themselves. They are about five tables away from us. I picked up my water bottle to take a sip while enhancing my hearing to their table.

"Babe… can I please have my dick back?!"

'His what!'

My eyes nearly bulge out of my socket. Emmett moans in pain through his greeted teeth. Rosalie stares at the ceiling for a moment, she hums while thinking as she taps her index finger on her chin.

"Hmm... It's not twenty-four hours yet."

"But it hurts! I can barely stand and walk."

"You're my big monkey man." Rosalie turns and gives him a peck on his cheek. "You can resist the pain."

"I already said I was sorry-"

"We can push forty-eight hours! Are you up for it?!"

Rosalie asked him with a sharp tone. Her eyes laid on to him with a daring look. A wave of shiver creeped on to the back of my neck. Rosalie can sometimes be sweet and kind, but once you get on her bad side, her wrath will rise upon her.

"No! No! I'll shut up." Emmett responded.

I chose to disengage from their conversation. The repercussions she is imposing on him are certainly not something I wish to delve into for an extended duration. Additionally, I prefer not to understand his reference to returning his member. The bell rang, signaling the end of the lunch period. We all stood up and proceeded to our Biology class.

Edward Cullen's POV

Alice and I made our way to our Biology class. We are just a few feet following behind Jackson, Bella, and Angela. So far, Jackson seems content when he arrived this morning. Although, he did seem slightly dissatisfied with how shallow his mind was in the beginning. It wasn't long before I've found out that he didn't get another dream or vision from his past. He wasn't the only one who felt the wave of dismay, but we are not going to give up. So far, in his mind, he hasn't brought up about the envelop or his trip to the public library. Was he able to find the right sources?

While walking through the hallways, Angela fell back from the group as she slowed down her pace while digging through her backpack. She motioned for Jackson and Bella to continue without her. My eyes stayed glued to her, I know she is not my soulmate, but I cannot fathom the feelings I have for her. Sadly, I would never drag her innocent human life into our dangerous world.

"You should talk to her."

Alice inaudibly whispered near my ear. I gaze towards her who she expresses a gleeful smile. I shook my head in disagreement.

"We are here for Jackson. I'm not prioritizing on making small talk with her. Besides... we are not to make any friends with other humans. You should know that by now."

Alice rolls her eyes. "That is the poorest excuse you have ever given. You didn't think for the past two years I didn't realize the way you look at her during our lunch periods. I don't need your mind reading ability to know you've been wanting to talk to her, Eddie."

I shook my head in disagreement. "Perhaps I do cherish the feeling to engage in a conversation with her. But there is no future or path for us to be together…"

'There won't be if you don't talk to her first!'

Alice hissed out of annoyance in her thoughts, directly towards me. I know she's trying to do me a favor, to which I've always appreciated her, but she needs to understand and accept that things won't go her way. Besides, I don't wish to get another scolding, no, screaming lecture coming out of Rosalie's mouth.

"The answer is still no, Alice."

We continued our way to class, and I know Alice's glare is burning on the back of my head. Angela is still digging through her backpack. Unbeknownst to her that we're going to pass by her. She may look like any average girl, but guys prefer to date the attractive ones. However, that is not the case for me, I'm attracted towards her personality, her beautiful and wonderful thoughts. If we were to be together, I would prefer to spend the rest of my immortal life just to be with her.

'Well then! You've left me no choice but to change your route!'

I frowned at her statement, but before I was going to ask her for what she meant. The heel of her boot kicked the back of my knee while pushing me with her hand towards Angela. I collided with her as she yelped when she stumbled her balance. I immediately put my arms around her shoulders and kept her firmly in balance before falling to the ground.

The only thing that fell was her backpack which cause to spread out her textbooks and papers, spreading beneath our feet. Angela looks over her shoulder and for the first time. We locked eyes on to each other without saying anything. Our faces are just couple of inches in between space. Her face expresses shock and frighten, mostly due to nearly falling to ground. I can feel the slow exhale of her warm breath as she can also feel my cold breath. I know we gaze over at each other from afar over time, but I never knew how beautiful her light brown eyes are behind those lenses. Neither have we ever stared at each other this long, feeling being drown into her eyes.

"Uhm... thank you, Edward."

Angela mumbled under her breath and looks away as her cheeks flushed pink. I gaze away while blinking my eyes, letting go of my grasp on her shoulders and quickly kneel to gather her things. She also joined in to pick up her textbooks and papers.

"I-I'm so sorry, Angela. Someone bumped into me... a-and I lost my footing-"

"It's okay, Edward. It was an accident, no worries."

Angela gives me a reassuring smile. it warms my dead cold heart seeing that smile. Almost like I feel a missing piece of mine has been found.

"Still, some folks need to pay attention where they walk."

I lowly muttered that last bit under my breath as I shot an irritated look towards Alice. She happens to be leaning against the wall near the classroom's door with her arms crossed. She flashes an innocent smile while shrugging her shoulders. I squint my eyes at her in warning, but she is unfazed with my stern look.

Angela chuckles. "Well... people also need to step out of the way."

'I'm such an idiot! Why did I look through my bag for that microfiber silk in the middle of the hallway. Gosh, this is so embarrassing!'

My eyes squint in her own thoughts, I gaze at her with a sympathy look as she continues to gather her final things before putting them in her backpack. It aches my dead heart to hear her shame herself when she's the most innocent sweet person in this school. It also doesn't help when I hear the thoughts from other students passing by near us.

'Yeah, right! Good luck getting your chances to ask him out!'

'Angela, have you've seen yourself? You're not even trying to dress to impress him!'

'Angela Weber, trying to fit in with this incest freaks!'

I didn't express from my face, but deep within me, I gritted my teeth out of anger for hearing those disgusting thoughts. It also didn't help when we could obviously hear them chuckling and giggling while passing by. Angela nervously looks over both of her shoulders, her insecurities began to creep up on her face. Never gazing up at me as she focuses on gathering her stuff quickly.

'Maybe, I should thank him for his help and leave without looking at him in the eye... This is so embarrassing' Angela sadly thought.

No. I wasn't going to allow these brats to continue mocking her for their own entertainment. As she put the last remaining items in her backpack and zipped it up. I gently and swiftly took it away from her grasp. I stood up while putting her backpack over my shoulder. I flash a warm loving smile at her and extended my hand in courtesy.

"Why don't I walk you to class, shall we?"

Angela gazed at me with astonishment, her eyes blinked a few times, and her jaw dropped. She still stayed frozen in kneeling position as she looks between my hand and me. Even our surroundings have silenced when other students abruptly stopped to witness this. She slowly reaches to grasp her fingers around mine. Her breath hitched when she felt my cold skin make contact with her warm blood skin.

My smile spread widely as I gently pulled her up to her feet and gestured for her to follow me. Angela happily did so as she walked along beside me. She looked down as I can see her cheeks turning cherry while smiling weakly. Angela turns to her head to me, flashing an appreciation smile.

"Thank you so much, Edward." Angela spoke with gentle eyes. "You're always so kind..."

"My pleasure..."

I flash a warm smiled at her. Before we are about to step inside the classroom, Alice still leans against the wall near the entrance, flashing her eyebrows at me with a grin.

'You're such a kind dead hearted gentleman, Edward, I'm so proud of you!'

"Shut it! You're going to pay for this!"

I inaudibly hissed under my breath while side eyeing her, allowing Angela to enter the class first without her knowledge. Alice beams with pride as she follows behind her.

'I love you too, brother.'

20 Minutes Later

I stared intently at Jackson while he drank the blue berry smoothie, this time he seemed more relaxed and in control of his hunger. Carlisle was right, putting double blood bags is helpful to advance his diet. Even his blood running through his veins is at ease than yesterday.

'I'm surprised you can't tell the difference between blue berry and blood, my dear little brother... They've been starving you for quite some time, haven't they.'

The hunger is checked out, for now, but now I'm focusing on his thoughts. I wanted to see if the smoothie will be able to trigger another recollection of his past. I wasn't the only one who stared at him intently, Alice has her hands clasp together and her eyes never blinked once. Bella, on the other hand, stares intently... and worriedly at him. Her eyes gaze between him and the mark he left on the edge of the table. I still can't hear any of her own thoughts, it's very frustrating.

'How are you able to shield me from my abilities?'

The sound of a clink drifted my thoughts out as I glanced over at Jackson. He settled the tumbler cup down with a satisfied smile on his face. He gently passes it over to Alice who she happily accepts it back. But I can tell in her eyes when she glances at me, there is a tinge of sadness.

'He didn't get another flashback...'

Alice thought in a statement rather than a question. Her tone felt disappointed with hopelessness on the edge.

"Thanks! It was sweet and delicious."

Alice beams. "You're welcome, all thanks to my mother as well."

"Oh yeah, I've been meaning to ask. Are you folks going to the Street Festival." Jackson asked.

He stares at me with curiosity, I could see a twinkle of hope in his eyes... and perhaps longing. My eyebrows frowned as I'm slightly taken aback about his eager question. It's understandable for Carlisle to be there for the announcement as he's the one who is heavily involved.

However, having the rest of the family attending this event is out of the question. It's a rare sight for the Cullens to be with the rest of the folks, aside from Carlisle's work. It's not because we hate being around town, but mostly we want to be discreet. Besides, there's nothing interesting to offer. We usually go to Seattle or anywhere else where they offer good qualities or luxury products, thanks to Alice and Rosalie.

"Of course! We'll be there for sure!" Alice beams happily.

"Awesome! I'll see you all there."

I glanced a questionable yet irritated expression towards her of this idea. But she returns a reassuring smile while giving those manipulation puppy eyes.

'Relax, Eddie. I've already seen for tomorrow, everything will be fine. Aside for a little shower of rain.'

I rolled my eyes while slowly exhaling a sigh. Alice always kept and behaved positively throughout our time with the family. She always chastises me for being negative, but in truth, I'm more the one who thinks realistically. Rosalie comes second.

While the four of us in the table continue working individually. Alice and I glanced at each other, a silent communication whether how to approach a conversation of his trip to the library. The problem is that if we do so, he'll suspect it was us who left him the envelop. We don't want him to be frightened.

"So, did you manage to find what you were looking for at the public library?" Bella asked.

Our eyes flicker towards Bella. The singer was the one who manage to break the ice of our eagerness. Alice's corner lips begin to tilt upwards, a beaming smile at Bella.

'Bella! You beautiful sweetheart, thank you so much!'

Jackson clears his throat. "Well, I kind of did. Just ended up with sort of dead end."

'How the hell am I supposed to continue my research of this Jackson Nelson without the lack of information this town offers and I'm quite sure Port Angeles is probably the same. I would have gone to Seattle if it weren't for my limitations?'

My eyes slightly widen upon hearing his real name come up in his mind. I'm glad he was able to find information from his past, but that also didn't ignite a recollection from his brain. We must find another way to help him remember, possibly changing the menu or putting another clue inside his locker.

"Well, I hope you didn't get in trouble with Evelyn for coming home late." Bella continued.

"Ha! Funny you should say that because when I got home, they weren't there. And this morning, she wasn't there either, just George."

Bella frowns in question. "Why is that?"

Jackson inhales some fresh air before releasing a sigh while rolling his eyes. "George and Evelyn went on a hike when the sun was setting in. Evelyn was attacked by an animal."

Bella whipped her head at him with wide eyes and a gaping mouth. Alice nearly smiles with relief but quickly masked it over with false sympathy. I, on the other hand, just narrowed my eyebrows at him. Wondering how the hell would the captivators were so foolish to hike near dusk and expectingly get attacked by a wild animal. No. There's more to their bullshit story, even I can see Jackson's eyes squint with doubt.

"Is she okay?" Bella asked with a slight worried.

"George said she'll be home afterschool, then I'll have to deal with her moaning pain or gilt trip. It's not the first time she's done it."

"I'm sure she's fine, Bella, no reason to work yourself up to a person you've never met." Alice chirped in softly.

She reached over to grasp Bella's hand. Providing some comfort by pressing firmly and tapping on top of her knuckles. However, knowing my sweet little precognition sister is fuming that Evelyn didn't die.

'Mission failed! We'll be the ones who will get her next time!'

I rolled my eyes while shaking my head. I glanced at the other two and expressed an apologetic small smile.

"Excuse me, but I will be right back."

After asking Mr. Molina permission to head for the restrooms and stepping out of the classroom. I made my way to a secluded area where no prying eyes or ears will be anywhere near me. I took my phone and dialed to Carlisle, knowing he is still working at this hour, just hope he isn't busy. Thankfully, it didn't take long after the first ring and Carlisle's voice came through.

"Edward. I supposed at this hour you're with your brother. Any update?" Carlisle asked.

I closed my eyes for a moment, feeling somewhat disappointed with how it turned out today. A sigh escaped between my lips while shaking my head.

"Well, we gave him the smoothie, but it didn't ignite another memory recollection of his past. It did, however, help to ease his hunger a lot more than yesterday for putting double blood bags." I lightly chuckled. "He didn't tell the difference between blood and fruit."

"My poor sweet son... He hasn't been fed very much properly. We'll have to change the menu but keep putting double blood bags. We'll have to restock on daily basis."

Carlisle spoke with gentleness, but I can tell he's tone is hurt because of Jackson's diet. I can't even imagine what Esme would do upon hearing this. She would at once go berserk to a murder spree.

"What about the envelop? Has he spoke anything about it through his mind?"

"He was able to find his name by using his family's company pin, along with the photo, but he's frustrated that library didn't provide much information. I don't think Port Angeles will offer him much either. His family's company is among the few who's becoming a ghost name." I explained, using my hearing senses for any incoming footsteps.

Carlisle sighs. "Perhaps another clue will be left for him in couple of days. He will suspect it is us our doing. We need to tread lightly."

I can hear the disappointment in his voice but still carries that gentle and calmer demeanor. I don't know how, but Carlisle always found a way to be a great leader and father figure to this family. It is why I have accepted and respected him as father.

"Knowing you, Edward, you want to ask me for something else. Am I right?"

"Yes... Is she there?"

Upon hearing Edward's hissing and low dangerous voice coming through the phone. Carlisle knew he's seeking answers as to what really happened this woman. To tell the truth he doesn't have the answers, yet, but he will find out. He's leaning against the wall just about thirty feet from the emergency room.

"Yes. Indeed, Evelyn Conolly is here at the emergency room. Occupying comfortably in one of our beds. Now if you'll excuse me, son, I have work to do. I will update you all tonight."

Carlisle doesn't wait for an answer from Edward as he hung up. His eyes never leaving nor blinking as he stares at the woman who's keeping an eye on his son. Laying down on the bed with her eyes closed as she's pretending to be sleeping. A surgical bandage is wrapped around her neck just below her jaw line.

Carlisle walks over to the emergency registration front desk and leans over with a charming familiar smile. Nurse Stacey looks up from her monitor and returns the smile. He can see her puffy cheeks turning red.

"Good afternoon, Dr. Cullen!"

"Good afternoon, Stacey." He nods curtly. "How's your shift been going?"

Nurse Stacey rolls her eyes playfully, but the corner of her eyes twinkle with flirtatious towards him. Something, he already used to work on every hospital throughout his immortal life.

"Peaceful as usual. It's the reason I love this town."

"I'm delighted to hear that." Carlisle then gestures his head over to Evelyn without batting an eye. "Is that Mrs. Conolly? The new residence who moved here a couple of days ago?"

Nurse Stacey scoffs and rolls her eyes. Carlisle narrows his eyebrows, even the nurse has a dislike towards the newcomer.

"Ugh! Yes. She's been wimping to get out as soon as possible. I stay clear with this one, Dr. Cullen, she's a feisty one." Nurse Stacey murmurs while playfully flashing her eyebrows.

Carlisle lightly chuckles. "I'm sure she is. I hear she was attacked by a wild animal?"

"Yes. She and her husband were hiking somewhere in the wilderness. Pretty amateurs for people who come from a big city."

Suddenly, Nurse Stacey's pager went off as she dug her fingers inside of her pocket and glanced at the small black device. She glances up and flashes an apologetic smile before standing up from her chair.

"Sorry Dr. Cullen, but duty calls."

Carlisle nods with an understanding expression as he sees her form vanishing around the corner. He took the opportunity to check the file cabinet and investigate Evelyn's medical report folder of this supposed wild animal attack. There is more to it than it meets the eye.

No professional or shall we say, secret cult, would be going out for hiking near dusk. Unless you're meeting someone important without prying ears and eyes.

He kept glancing over to the sleeping form woman lying on the bed while looking through her folder. After centuries of controlling his emotions, he couldn't bare but show a slight disdain of the woman. But kept his calm gentle demeanor outside in the public.

Upon reading into her medical report, it read that she was brought in by her husband, George, around 0130 hrs. Dr. Kennedy was the one who worked on stitching her wounds up last night for his shift. He even took the liberty to take photographs evidence of her wounds while she was sedated.

He leans forwards upon seeing the photos. Evelyn has a fresh bruise around her neck with five punctured wounds beneath her jawline. The report read it was about less than an inch wide of the opening wound. Two inches in depth nearly missing her arteries. Furthermore, there are no signs of infection, potential rabies, or saliva.

'Interesting.'

Carlisle places the folder down in the file cabinet. Throughout his centuries of medical knowledge and dealing with trauma victims of abuse. He knows full well she was not attacked by a wild animal. Someone attacked her by gripping her neck with enough force to leave a bruising mark, along with those five punctured wounds to be someone's fingers. Either by long sharp nails or claws.

"Excuse me. I'm here to pick up my wife, Evelyn Conolly."

Carlisle's heightened senses picked up a man's voice from down the hallway outside the emergency room. He swiftly stood up and walked away from the registration desk. He randomly picked up a clipboard and slowly walked away. Looking himself busy with his usual routine.

In the corner of his eyes, he could see a stocky tall man walking in the room following Nurse Stacey. He could almost be Emmett's height, with short black hair, and an oval head shape. Carlisle at once knew this is George, based on the photo that Alice has provided.

Carlisle made it out of the room but leaned over to the wall near the exit. He wanted to listen to their conversation and what they plan to do being here at Forks. Nurse Stacey forced a smile as she approached Evelyn, who at once opened her half lid eyes.

"Hello, Mrs. Conolly, I hope you rested well-"

"Not. Really."

Evelyn responded with a disdain tone and expressed a boredom look. I can clearly see why Nurse Stacey dislikes the woman. Evelyn has no self-respect to those who help her and comes across as selfish cross with narcissism. Nurse Stacey kept her demeanor into professional, but I can clearly see her jaw muscled tensed up.

"I'm sorry to hear that, but your husband is here to pick you up." Nurse Stacey turns to George with that same professional smile. "I'll get those discharge papers ready."

"Thank you, Miss, I appreciate that."

Nurse Stacey then heads over to the desk, but I lightly chuckled to see her face falters while rolling her eyes. George slowly closes the curtains for some privacy.

"How are you feeling, my beautiful wife?" George sarcastically asked.

"Fuck. You." She lowly hissed through her teeth.

Carlisle's brow furrowed in question. Not the typical husband and wife material between these two. He leans close to the entrance as he's curious.

"Let's not forget you brought this on yourself."

"I told you not to bring that up!"

Evelyn hissed once again but quickly groaned in pain. She reached over to smooth her neck while controlling to breathe. George smirks down at her, giving her a deserving look. She gazes up with a scowl look before speaking lowly again.

"Any luck finding them, dear?"

Evelyn mockingly asked him with a coy smile on her face. Carlisle alarmingly narrows his eyes as he leans over to what she meant. Do they know who they are? Are they aware of other vampires in this town?

"Oh, that's cute. Considering most of these folks in town are pale." George said. "But none of them have red crimson eyes. Besides, they are supposed to be nomads, not living among the humans."

Carlisle's eyes slightly widened. These people know how to identify a vampire, but they are describing the ones that feed on human.

'How do they know about nomads and vampires? How much information do they know about our world? And more importantly, how did they manage to identify my son, Jackson, as a vampire when his eyes were gold like us as vegetarian?' He thought.

"You still need to keep a close eye on things. Pay attention." She scolded him.

"I won't do it without the proper gear I need. What am I going to do? Using with my bear own hands."

"If you don't provide the 512ml of venom on time. She is going to do a lot of worse things than what she did to me."

Carlisle's body shifted uncomfortably as he pushes himself against the wall, his eyes widening of this crucial information. He contemplates to go over there, introduced himself, and welcomed them in this community. Though, he knows full well it jeopardizes and endanger his family with these lunatics.

'512ml of venom, what do they need the venom for? How are they going to get the venom out of our kind? It's impossible! And who is this mysterious woman they are talking about?'

Judging by their voice when they speak about this mysterious woman, it is out of fear. Without a doubt, they met their leader last night in the middle of the forest without prying eyes. And that same leader is the one who attacked Evelyn out of punishment. Nurse Stacey finally returns with the clipboard in possession and opens the curtains.

"Okay, sorry about the wait. Just need your signature, Mr. Conolly, and your wife will be good to go."

"About damn time…"

Evelyn bitterly muttered under her breath while rolling her eyes. Nurse Stacey's lips pressed into a thin line, suppressing her anger. George clears his throat as he flashes an appreciation smile towards the nurse. He gently grabs the clipboard and signs the paperwork.

"Thank you, Miss, we do appreciate the service of your work."

He hands her back the clipboard with a nod. Stacey smiles back at him for his respectfulness, contrast to his wife. She flicks her eyes towards Evelyn before taking her leave. Evelyn puffs in irritation as she glances at the nurse's form leaving out of her sight. She steadily sits up and barely stood to her feet.

"Let's go, I don't want Subject 021 to be suspicious of my absence."

SNAP!

George, Evelyn, and some staff turned their heads to the direction of that noise where the exit doors lead the hallway. Carlisle quickly moved away from the area as he made a beeline towards his office. He forced a smile towards some staff that he ran along the hallway. But deep within him, he gritted his teeth in seethe. He had to suppress a dangerous growl that could lead to some humans to hear. In his arms, he held the clipboard that he snapped in half after hearing them call his beloved son, Subject 021.

Upon arriving at his office, Carlisle closed the door behind him, a little too hard. The walls slightly shook of the impact, but he didn't care. He laid the two pieces on the desk before sitting down at his chair. He took deep breaths in order to control the beast inside of him towards the couple. Carlisle had never felt this feeling for a long time. He ran his hands over his hair as he comprehends this information gathered.

"Those vile heartless bastards!" He lowly hissed under his breath. "They have the audacity to call my son, Subject 021."

He slammed the palm of his hand on to his desk. Papers, pens, and other objects jolted in the air from the impact. Everything scattered around his desk and to the floor. Carlisle pinched the bridge of his nose while resting is elbows on his knees.

'I have to bring this information to my family tonight. But I must choose my words wisely, I don't want to upset my love any further, or better yet, going on a killing spree.'

He can't believe this is happening to his family. They were once a beloved peaceful family with a few hiccups throughout their time together. All changed after these lunatics took their son away from them and using him as an experiment lab rat. It may have left a deep scar within his family, but it didn't shatter their love and bond together.

Speaking of experiments, what exactly do they want to do with the venom? The venom may have overtaken and replaced all their bodily fluids after transition, but it's extremely difficult to extract it from their bodies. There is skin is stone cold hard marble, it would take another vampire or a shapeshifting wolf to break the surface.

Carlisle reaches over his personal briefcase and opens it to take out a folder. He opens it to reads the laboratory results that he and Edward tested the pills last night. It was a long stressful process, especially with that stench they've dealt with in close doors. But were able to identify a few chemicals that have been used.

Test Report

Sulfur - 25%

Carboplatin – 18%

Arsenic trioxide – 7%

Unknown – 50%

Carlisle slowly shook his head, finding these results unbelievable. The medicine they are providing him are nothing but toxics and deadly chemicals. The one that finds him intrigue yet frustratingly is that unknown chemical substance that covers fifty percent. The lab test equipment wasn't able to identify the source based on the periodic table or medical textbooks.

Carlisle taps his finger over to his chin and thinks thoroughly. What exactly is that fifty percent unidentifiable chemical? And what exactly are they planning on doing with the venom?

Desmond Conolly's POV

I'm heading home after school, excited for the weekend and the Street Festival. It's a great excuse to get out of the house and explore the town. I'll see what the festival has to offer and look for a part-time job at Newton's Outfitters.

I also feel incredibly delightful for once in my life. I get to see Bella tomorrow, along with the rest of the group who I get along with like Angela, Mike, Lauren, and Ben. Not to mention the Cullens will be there as well. The smoothies they have brought me have been helping with my sore throat and that... other thing that I can't control or whatever it is inside of me.

Upon reaching to my house and parking it on the driveway. My mood at once faltered once I stepped out of the truck and noticed Evelyn's silhouette in the kitchen's window. I heavily sigh, completely forgetting that she was going to be here in the afternoon.

'Well, here goes nothing.'

I began walking towards the front door with my chin up. I won't lie, I feel somewhat nervous to deal with her right now. She's becoming unpredictable these past few days. Yesterday was the beginning of her mask slipping up. I wonder what she has in store once I step foot inside the house.

I reached over to grasp the doorknob but stopped to listen closely. I enhanced my hearing senses, but to my surprise, there is no argument between each other. Just the static and the cheering crowd noise coming from the television.

"Weird..." I mumbled and opened the door.

"Hey buddy, how was school?"

George greeted me when I stepped inside, he sat on the couch watching a football game with a beer on his hand. I frown thoughtfully before masking it over with a nonchalant half-smile.

"Yeah, all good."

Evelyn then appears by the kitchen's doorway. She's wearing a scarf around her neck, but just above the line, I can see the white cotton bandage sticking out. She barely smiles at me, mostly due to suppressing a wince of pain that she's going through.

"Hello, Desmond. We brought some Chinese food on the way. I hope you understand the circumstances."

I grimaced upon hearing her speak hoarsely. I feel somewhat sympathy as I can relate to the pain around the throat.

"Are you okay?" I softly asked.

Evelyn forced a smile. "I'm sure I'll make it. Besides, nothing but a scratch."

"Right…" I murmured as my eyes flickered at her neck before meeting her gaze. "Let me just take a quick shower and I'll be right back."

"Very well, sweetie. I'll keep the food warm until you get back."

And just like that, she strode back into the kitchen without batting an eye on me or George. I looked at him in question, but he just shrugged before gazing back at the game. I shook my head in bewilderment and decided to head upstairs. Taken aback with how everything turned out, expecting with some arguments and abusive power. But no, she just acted natural like nothing happened.

Upon reaching to my room, I closed the door behind me and brought the chair over. I climbed up and removed the air vent to make sure the money is still there along with the folder and the envelope. To my relief, it is still there and neither of them haven't discovered it. I grab a couple of bucks and put them in my wallet. Just in case I crave to buy something interesting in the festival… or something nice for Bella.

I place the money back inside the air duct and closed the vent. Climbing down and putting the chair back near my desk. I glanced over the door while frowning in thought, enhancing my hearing to see if I can pick up their silent conversation.

Nothing. That's odd and uneasy for me. It's almost like this attack made a turning point for everyone to get back their old ways. I grabbed a fresh pair of pajamas and headed towards the bathroom.

The Cullen's Residence

"...what do you mean they need the venom?!"

"...how the hell are they going to extract it out?!"

"...did those bastards extract some venom out of Little Jacky?!"

"...what exactly attacked her within those woods?"

Carlisle raises his hand to silence everyone in the room at once. He expected upon bringing this latest information to his family will be a wave of questions. He heavily sighs and runs his hand through his hair.

"I'm in agreement with everyone here. I'm just sharing what I've discovered," says Carlisle, pacing around the living room. "Evelyn wasn't attacked by a wild animal. She encountered a woman in the woods who then attacked her as a form of punishment."

"How dangerous is this woman?" Jasper asked.

Carlisle hesitates but continues. "Dangerous enough to leave a bruise mark around her neck with five punctured wounds below her jawline. Possibly from sharp nails or claws. Include the fear she placed upon the duo if they don't provide the 512ml of venom on time will result much worse punishment."

The group became quiet after he spoke. They looked at each other briefly, conveying an unspoken message. Their expressions ranged from concern to apprehension.

Carlisle sighs. "Now, I am not sure how they are extracting the venom or why it is needed. However, I do know that they are searching for a suitable donor."

"Do they know about us?" asked Emmett.

"No. Based on their small conversation of what I've picked up on. George may be the one assigned to seek out a vampire with the only knowledge of pale skin and red eyes." Carlisle explains.

Edward frowns thoughtfully. "The ones who feed on human blood. But father, the question still begs. How did they know Jackson is a vampire? He never fed on a human soul, so how did they know he is a vampire who feeds on animal blood instead of human?" He leaned forward. His eyes tension with apprehension. "They must know, right?!"

Edward's pleading question hangs heavy as the whole group held their breath. Carlisle expresses an uncertain and empathy across his face.

"I…I don't know, son." He admits in a whisper then turns to Alice. "Alice, can you see if those two will be in presence for tomorrow?"

Alice closed her eyes. "No. Jackson will arrive on his own without those two, and the rest is just spots that I can barely see."

"Bella." answered Rosalie.

She said it casually, but underneath it there is venomous tone while curling her lip upward with disdain. Oblivious to Carlisle, he shakes his head, focusing on the main issue.

"I'm not taking any chances. Tomorrow, I want everyone to wear eye contacts at this event." He firmly said, earning a few groans from his kids. "Now I know how irritating they can be, but I prefer to keep it highly discreet from this people."

Carlisle raises his finger, expressing a dreadful look. "If... they do show up tomorrow. I want each of you in your best behavior. Or better yet, hold your instincts on attacking them out of rage and hatred. We're going to be in public, and we still don't fully know on what we're dealing with. Please…"

Carlisle looks at each family member, silently conveying the importance of their roles and responsibilities for tomorrow, particularly to Rosalie and Esme. The boys nodded firmly, including Alice. Rosalie and Esme looked doubtful, but gave a nod.

"Good. If Jackson is on his own without those parasites. It will mean we will spend an entire morning with your brother, like a family. If only temporarily. This meeting is dismissed."

Carlisle strode away to his private office. Edward, feeling confused, slowly stood up to tail him towards his office. Knowing full well that he didn't hear a single word coming through his thoughts. He questions whether his father kept some information to himself.

The family is alone in the room. Alice closes her eyes to glimpse tomorrow's future, ensuring George and Evelyn are absent from any possibilities. However, she did catch something that would bring joy to Esme.

"Mother... Jackson is going to skip breakfast tomorrow. He's eager to see his friends, and of course, the Cullens as well. I'm sure he'll be appreciative of your culinary arts." said Alice, opening her eyes and expressing a coy smile.

Esme beams happily, clasping her hands together. "Oh, how marvelous! I just know the perfect breakfast to prepare for him. Rosalie, come along dear."

Carlisle reached over to his office and sat down on the main chair behind the desk. Edward stepped inside and stood near the doorway.

"Close the door, Edward."

Edward obliges as he closes the door, knowing well this room is soundproof. He strolls over to take a seat in front of him. His eyes never leaving on his father and leader. Carlisle takes out the results sheet of paper and places it on the desk, in between them.

"You've been noticeably quiet..." Edward said, his words knew the meaning to Carlisle.

"I have my reasons." Carlisle nodded, he raises the sheet. "Have any theories what the fifty percent is?"

Edward leans forward. "It could be anything, possibly another chemical that we're not aware. Why? Do you have a theory?"

"In 1895, Albert Calmette developed the first anti-cobra serum. It took another thirty years to developed them in the US." Carlisle shakes his head in amusement. "It only took a small amount of snake venom to inject it inside either a horse or sheep. These animals have robust immune system and produce powerful antibodies that can bind to snake venom components. Enabling the human's immune defenses to end the toxics."

Edward frowns in question but leans forward as he's intrigued.

"Hypothetically, if they would have gone through that route. Our venom would never work on a horse or sheep. It will instantly kill the animals. However, with humans, it would take three days to transition due to their immune system fighting everything against our venom." He clears his throat uncomfortably. "While being paralyzed on the ground… suffering."

Edward leans back while thinking. "But that's impossible. We've never heard or discovered a human who is immune to our venom. That would take many bodies for them to sacrifice. Unless..."

He stops to think for a moment before slowly his eyes widen as the realization dawn upon him. Edward gazes up at his father, who tilts his head with curiosity on to what he thinks.

"The Quileute shapeshifters are immune to our venom. Of course, if bitten, it does weaken them and takes time to heal. But you don't think they have found out about their existence?"

"I don't think so." Carlisle shook his head. "They didn't mention anything about shapeshifters, just our kind."

"Still, it would take years to develop a serum to fill that gap of the fifty percent. Not to mention the amount of run test experiments on my poor little brother."

"Or multiple individuals..."

Edward blinks in surprise. "You mean-"

"Yes." Carlisle stands up and points his finger down on his desk in a firm gesture. "This will be between us, do I have your trust?"

A wave of silence passed the moment before Edward finally nodded. Seeing his father expressing a grave and serious look on his face has his attention. Carlisle takes a deep breath before sighing.

"George and Evelyn called your brother, Subject 021. I hope you understand why I didn't mention this with the others."

Edward's eyes widen with fierce predatory anger. He gritted his teeth, his jaw muscles tensed up. Both of his hands gripped firmly on to the armchairs. He closes his eyes and begins to take deep breaths.

"I understand why you kept it and... I respect it." Edward looks up and opens his eyes, still intense. "Esme and Rosalie would have finally snapped."

"Glad I don't need your sister's vision to see it coming." said Carlisle, trying to break the ice.

Edward lightly snorts, shaking his head before continuing. "If Jackson was captured and labeled as Subject 021 in 1987. Then how many of our kind have been captured by these parasites after him? How many of them have gone through the same torture of testing? Is Jackson the only one who they manage to succeed? Manage to find a prototype anti-venom against ours?"

Carlisle walks around his desk and leans against it once he's near Edward. He places a firm yet reassuring hand on to his shoulder. Edward glances up to him. A mix of emotions run through his face – pain, disbelief, and anger.

"It doesn't make any sense. Why? Why go through all the trouble to find an antidote in such a cruel way?" asked Edward.

"To weaken us, use the venom for their own beneficial purposes." Carlisle answered. "That is my one and only theory."

"It's a solid theory, but without evidence. We are still left with more questions than answers."

The tension in the room is palpable. Neither of them has spoken a word as the silence continues what it felt like hours. Carlisle leans forward, his eyes piercing into Edward's eyes.

"Edward." He began lowly. "From now on, I need you to keep an extra eye on your brothers and sisters. Be cautious to your surroundings and look out for each other. I don't want to lose another family member. Am I clear?"

Without hesitation, Edward nodded with determination on his eyes. "I will."

"Good." He patted him on his shoulder. "Now, shall we continue running more test on these pills. Let us see if my theory is correct."

The two of them continued working on the pills. Trying out different methods with only using their own venom against it. They wanted to see how the venom reacted against the venom and how long it will last. While working at it, Edward's thoughts drifted out on to the couple. Wondering what they are doing right now at this moment.

"You know, you could have stayed at home to rest and recover." said George.

He addressed Evelyn with indifference as she reclined in the passenger seat, her feet resting on the dashboard. She lit a cigarette and inhaled the tobacco toxins into her lungs, then released the smoke out of the rolled-down window.

"Oh, I didn't know you were looking out for my wellbeing, dearly."

Evelyn remark back, placing her hand on her chest. It sometimes irritated him with that false sweetness underneath that tone of her voice. In the end, he kept it under control as he made a turn on Pillar Point and drove slowly on the gravel road.

"This is my assignment." He firmly addressed. "I don't need you babysitting me every step I take."

"Oh Georgie Boy..." She drooled and inhaled her cigarette. "You still have so much to learn."

George was scheduled to meet an individual named Derrick, and Evelyn opted to accompany him. Her recent behavior has caused him discomfort. Emma instructed him via phone to proceed to Pillar Point Recreation Center at 0130 hours. The parking lot should be vacant at this time, making it an ideal location away from inquisitive eyes and ears.

Emma's reason to make them leave at this hour was to make sure Subject 021 does not suspect any furthermore of their activities. Due to yesterday's event of their absence and Evelyn's wound.

"You really are pushing my buttons and Madame Eleanor's. You're lucky you have not yet crossed a line."

"Oh, shut it." She puffs another blow of smoke. "Consider this I'm shadowing over you, and not to mention. You need my help to capture one at least."

Upon reaching the parking lot, the headlights revealed a white van parked near a shed. A tall slim man with a leather jacket leaned against it while seeping a cup of coffee. He pushed himself against the van and walked over to open the back doors, revealing two black cases.

George killed the engine and stepped out of the car, soon followed by Evelyn. Both embraced the wave of crisp air and the smell of the sea, separating two nations. He approaches the man while she laid back against the hood of the car, still enjoying her cigarette.

While approaching the man, George can see him clearly. The man, Derrick, is much older than he is, around late sixties with grey hair, large grotesque nose, and a wide smile with crooked teeth.

George had to hold his breath upon stopping in front of him, he can smell the rotten-egg stench coming from his mouth. He can see the heavy under-eye bags while his skin looked scaly and rough. His hair is also rough and uncombed.

'Fuck! Does this guy even take a shower?'

"Well, I'll be damn. You're still alive." Derrick remarked with a grin.

George sighs annoyingly. "Yeah, I'm still breathing."

"Wasn't talking to you, rookie."

Derrick mockingly waves his fingers at Evelyn, widening his grin. Seeing the white bandage around her neck with blood stains. She in return raised her hand and give him the bird. The old man barked with laughter before his eyes landed on George.

"So... You're the one whose been given a special assignment from Madame Eleanor... interesting."

The man scratched his chin, eyeing him up from top to bottom. George feels the back of his hairs stand up. This old man who has a grouchy voice is gazing him like a specimen.

Derrick oversees extracting the venom out of the supernatural creatures that walk among this Earth. Evelyn has met Derrick a few occasions, but this is the first time that George met him. He has his own underground laboratory hidden deep in the forest of Vancouver Island.

"Get to the fucking point, D. We don't got all night." said Evelyn.

Derrick raised his hands in a placating gesture. "Of course, allow me to introduce to my fascinating toys."

He walks over and opens both cases. The one on the right is a large case. Revealing a full-length stock net gun, and an advanced syringe gun with two unmark vials separate. The one on the left is a small case. George frowned as he leaned over to see what looked to be strap on wrist attached on a canister and a button. He stepped back and narrowed his eyes over at Derrick, questioning whether these are the right tools to capture a vampire.

"Don't you dare give me that look, boy."

Derrick said in a firm tone while squinting his eyes. He grabs the net gun and hands it to George. He notices a small control display on its left side and wonders about its functions.

"This is a short stock Remington 700 Bolt action net gun. It uses .308 blank rounds with a canister net launcher. So, you better make your one and only shot." Derrick smiles.

"What the fuck!" George angrily exclaimed. "Do you really expect me to catch one of them with this thing. They'll fucking dodge it and sink their teeth or snap my neck before I'll take the shot."

Derrick's lip curled upward as he grabs the net gun from him. "Such an impatient little prick you are..."

He then tosses it over to Evelyn, who captures it with ease and examines it closely. Derrick then moves on towards the smaller case and takes out the wrist strap with the canister.

"This canister contains the prototype ME-1. The same recipe that I provide you both the pills for Subject 021. However, upon pressing this button, it will release a large toxic smoke in the air within a range of three feet." Derrick explains.

He tosses it over to George, who nervously caught without pressing the button. He glances between the gadget and Derrick, seeing if there is any mischief in his eyes.

"You're kidding right?" George asked, nervously chuckle. "You want me to get near them in order to weakened them?"

"Or let them get to you, but you better have fast reflex on the pressing that button." Derrick cackles. "Oh, and hold your breath while you're at it."

"So, let me get this straight, D." said Evelyn.

She pushed herself from the hood of the car and approached them with the net gun on her possession.

"Once he activates to release the toxics near the leech. You want us to use this net gun to capture and subdue them with using that syringe gun. Which I assume it holds more ME-1 serum to officially bring it back from the living. Of course, for only temporarily, am I right?"

Evelyn questioned him with a smirk to which earned a bark of laughter from Derrick. He pulled his head back while clapping his hands.

"Someone gives this woman a beer!" He joyously exclaims before continuing. "You are correct, Evelyn. The net is made of flexible stainless-steel rope. It holds a wireless electric charger that you can control on the display."

Evelyn turns on the display controls, causing a humming sound from the net launcher. The three individuals feel the electric charge waves emanating from it. She then turns it off and hands it to Derrick with an approval smile.

"How many volts?" asked George.

Derrick heavily sighs while putting the net gun in the case. "After being exposed with the ME-1 and having extraordinarily little resilient of what's left of their strength. I'd say the maximum volts is 80,000 volts."

"But please do be cautious with raising the volts as these bastard's venom are flammable." Derrick finished with smug on his face.

"Still, you want me to be used as bait for these assholes. Madame Eleanor reported a few rogue vampires!" George exclaimed.

"We'll, that is your responsibility and assignment from the Madame. Other than that, I have done my part." Derrick said.

He cautiously takes the wrist strap with the small canister from George's hand and places it back to the smaller case. He then closes both cases, locking them securely, and hands over to him.

"It's all impressive, D, but I'm looking for something more than electrocution and gassing them." Evelyn said.

Derrick chuckles. "That bad how she got you, huh. Well then, what are you looking for?"

"Pain. Ture agonizing pain..." She hissed lowly with a smirk.

"Oh... and I just know the thing for you Eve. Not part of what the Madame ordered, but exceptions can be made."

Derrick reached over and opened a hidden compartment beneath the floorboard of the van. He took out wooden rectangular case and opened it to reveal a large twelve-inch knife with its leather sheath. Evelyn tilts her head while arching an eyebrow at him but soon reaches over to grab it by the handle.

She can tell it feels heavier than the other knifes she handle in her time in the army. She then removes the leather sheath away from the knife. Evelyn blinks her eyes, taken aback that the knife is not made of steel, but carved into crystalline.

"Double edge..." She murmured.

Her mouth gapes in awe, she raises it above her head to mesmerize the beautiful crystal clear of the art. She slowly looks at Derrick with a smile on her face.

"Is this what I think it is?" Evelyn asked with a knowing look.

Derrick nods happily. "Yes... indeed it is, my dear. It is made from vampire's skin, or shall I say its entire body."

"How did you do it?" asked George.

"From failed subjects, of course, but Madame Eleanor ordered me to dispose of them into the pits of fire. However, I chose to use them for other purposes, and this is one of them. Took me a while to crush their bodies into smithering pieces. I even took the pleasure to test it on a few subjects... you should have seen their faces."

Derrick laughed, his laughter echoing through the quiet forest. George grimaced of this revelation, now knowing this mad scientist enjoys the pleasure of new discoveries and testing it without precaution. It raises a question about his methods of developing his equipment.

"Why didn't you develop them into bullets?" Geroge pushed on annoyingly.

Derrick scoffs. "Ha! You said it yourself, they'll dodge before you shoot."

"How sharp is it?" Evelyn asked.

"Test it out, yourself."

Without wasting a second glance, she flipped the knife and impaled it to the door of the van. The crystalline knife easily cut through without any resistance, but Evelyn drags it across. It cut through like butter as the screeching metal sound echoed through the forest. She pulled back and glanced it over with admiration, seeing no damage on crystalline knife.

"You never disappointed, D." She praises him with a smile.

"Next time, impale it through a log instead of my van." He muttered annoyingly.

"Do you prefer your fancy red Ferrari?"

"No. Fair enough..."

Derrick closes the van doors to depart, and before leaving, he smiles and pats George's shoulder.

"Enjoy your hunt." he says before leaving.

"Wait! How did you folks manage to capture Subject 021 back in 1987?" George asked.

Derrick paused before getting into the van, glancing over his shoulder with a smirk. Discretion is the top priority in this society, but he does sure love to tease the new initiates.

"We didn't... we had help."

He enters the van and starts the engine. He drives past the two people and makes a salute gesture. Left alone, Evelyn sheathed the knife, satisfied with it more than their original weapon. She enters the passenger side. George follows, sighing at the difficult assignment.
