Sam looked up at Lily, who was staring down at the two of them, her eyes wide. For a moment, Sam prepared to run, ready to escape the dangerous girl he hadn't seen since being shrunk. Lily dropped the poker from her hands, bursting in to sobs.
"M-mommeeeeee…" She wailed, sinking to her knees. "I killed mommy, she's dead!" Sam covered his ears, the sound of her sobbing much louder to his small ears. He felt a pang of guilt in his chest.
She may have been the source of all of his problems, but right now she was just a scared kid who had dealt with something she never should have had to. He steeled himself and stepped up to her, placing a tiny hand on her knee.
"Lily, she's not dead!" He called up, though he wasn't sure if his little voice would carry over her tearful cries.
"H-he was right, I hurt daddy… and I killed mommy…" She cried, tears slipping through her hands and hitting the floor as she pointed at the tiny, unconscious figure of Dean.
"Calm down, please, Lily!" Sam called up. She looked down at him with red-rimmed eyes. She looked surprised, like she hadn't expected him to still be there. "Lily, you didn't kill her, I promise." He said. Lily shook her head.
"No, I hit her with the poker, like the scary man said, and she just... d-disappeared. She's not small now, either, she's just gone!" She started to sniffle again, and Sam shook his head.
"She's not gone, Lily. She'll come back. But for now, she's not your mom, not really. Some other person is there instead."
"Somone else? How can there be someone else?" Lily asked, hiccupping. She reached down for Sam, and he steadied himself. Lily was extremely gentle this time, her fear undercutting her usual strength. Instead of keeping him wrapped in her fingers, she set him gently on her other palm, letting him sit. Sam patted her thumb.
"Has your mom been acting different sometimes, recently? Like all of a sudden, she's acting really weird?" Lily scrunched her face up, thinking hard. She nodded slowly.
"Yeah… Sometimes she would get really angry with dad, right when she found the box first. She told me that sometimes you need to take matters into your own hands." She recited. "Sometimes she was nice. She was always nice to me, but she was really mean to everyone else. Like when those two guys came to our house."
"Two guys?" Sam thought immediately of the first two boys to go missing, Josh and Ethan.
"Yeah, they were here to destroy mommy's bathroom. But then mommy was super mad…" Lily looked away, shutting her mouth. She started to cry again. "This is all my fault." She whimpered.
"Lily, it's not your fault." Sam said, shifting his weight in her palm. She only nodded.
"It is! I told mommy I was lonely, and I was sad because I didn't have any toys to play tea party with, and she said she would make some for me." She took a deep breath. "She told me it was all ok, that it was just consequences… She said no one was allowed in my room, and if they did, to give them the cup and it would all be ok." Sam took a deep breath.
"She gave you cup?" Sam asked. Lily nodded sadly.
"After… well, after the first one. She wanted me to do it. She said that any man who went in my room was bad and needed a lesson." Sam let out a hollow laugh.
"So your mom knew you were lonely, and didn't want men in your room." He said. Lily nodded.
"She wasn't like that all the time… Just sometimes." She pushed out her bottom lip in a little pout. "I mean, she said that it was ok to give them the cup and have them play with me."
"Lily, I understand. You believed what your mom was telling you. But it's not right. We're all real people, and we don't want to be small like this." Sam glanced down at Dean, whose miniaturized body was still lying unconscious on the floor. "We all want to be big again. That's why we need your help." Lily nodded.
"O-okay, I'll help you." She said, quietly. Sam smiled up at her. Lily was a nice kid; it wasn't fair of this ghost to manipulate her loneliness to further her own goal.
"It's ok, Lily. As long as you promise to help us all get back to normal." He said, and she smiled softly.
"Okay, I promise."
Dean rolled over, wishing he could still slip back into unconsciousness. His muscles ached, his head hurt, and his ears were still ringing.
"Dean! Dean, are you awake?" He heard Sam, so close to his ear.
"You shouldn't be out of my pocket." He groaned, lifting his hand to his ear and feeling for Sam under his fingers,
"Yeah, I… don't think that's an option anymore." Sam said, laughing a little. Dean groaned, rubbing his eyes and finally sitting up.
"Why the hell not?" He said, looking into Sam's eyes. "Holy shit!" He shouted, immediately up on his feet. Sam stood up, his hands placating.
"Ok, calm down." He said, his voice even. Dean looked up and immediately wished he hadn't. Lily stood over them, her eyes worried and watery, looming over them both. The room stretched in front of his eyes, walls and ceiling towering above.
"Shit! It didn't work!" Dean said, trying to mask his unease with the situation with anger. "Damn ghost kicked my ass. I didn't even get to..." He trailed off, folding his arms and looking up again. His mind was trying to refuse the new perspective, telling him that that wasn't the table rising above him, that wasn't a human being looking down on him.
"Well, Lily managed to dissolve the ghost for now. But we have to do something before she reforms." Sam said. He held his hands out, as if to calm his brother. Dean shivered at Lily's scrutiny. It made him feel uncomfortable that Sam was so casual about the giant that had them in her sight.
"Yeah, that's great! I'll make sure to bring my shovel so we can dig up this bitch's remains! Or wait, I might need a teaspoon instead! Anyone have a freakin' toothpick?" He raged. Sam sighed.
"Dean, man. You have got to calm down." Sam said, placing his hands on his brother's shoulders. Dean shot him a glare, his eyes still wide.
"Calm down? Dude, I'm four freaking inches tall!"
"Yeah? I am too, man. It sucks, I know. But we have to finish this hunt. Come on, we both want to get back to normal as soon as we can." Sam said. Dean clenched his jaw and suppressed his panic response. He never panicked, especially not in front of Sam. But he couldn't stop his breath from hitching as he looked up and around at everything that now outsized him. Lily shifted on her feet, causing Dean to flinch. How could something so much bigger than him move so fast? And how was Sam so damn calm?
"Hey, Lily? Mind showing us where you last saw the cup?" Sam asked, turning towards the giant little girl, his voice gentle. Lily nodded, reaching down.
"Whoa, hey. I'm not going anywhere with her." Dean said, taking a few steps back and clenching his fists. "I don't want anyone's grubby paws on me."
"Oh, yeah? Good luck making it up the stairs on your own. I'll see you next year." Sam shot back. "Listen, the girl's not going to hurt us, and we're going to need someone's help to put this ghost down for good." Sam said. Dean glared at him, pissed that the logic made sense.
"Damn it." He couldn't come up with a valid alternative. "Damn you. I hate this." He growled, but Sam only rolled his eyes. Sam gave her the thumbs-up and Lily nodded, reaching down for the two men. Sam stood still, at least familiar with the feeling. Dean leapt back, unable to override his hunter's instincts.
"Chill, dude. She's going to be gentle." Sam hissed. His conversation with Lily helped put his mind at ease about accepting help from her. Even at a twentieth of his usual size, he was still able to connect with people, helping them through horrible situations. He'd had more of a chance to get used to his new size as well. Lily was big, but she wasn't nearly as big as Dean.
Despite his brother's calming tone, Dean still couldn't suppress the panic that had gripped him when he saw that hand coming for him. Was this how Sam had felt this entire time? He swallowed, a guilty feeling clawing at his throat. Damn, sorry man, he thought, lowering his hands and steeling himself.
Lily's fingers wrapped around him, her fingers curling around his torso and leaving his arms free. As her fingers tightened, his body from his chest to his knees were completely encased in her hand. He took a deep breath as suddenly they were moving, the floor beneath him receding. Nausea gripped him and he refused to look down, to see himself moved without having any control whatsoever.
"You doing ok?" Sam called, gripped in the other fist. Lily was also looking at him, her eyes wide.
"Is it too tight?" She asked quietly. Dean shook his head, not trusting himself to open his mouth just yet. Lily's grip was firm, but not tight. He didn't even want to think about how it would feel to be less secure. He swallowed the sick feeling, willing himself not to vomit.
"Come on, let's get going." He growled, hating the helpless feeling of being suspended what felt like several stories in the air. Lily began to step, and Dean immediately clutched tight to the fingers he could reach, his fear of heights making his heart jackhammer wildly. As she walked up the stairs, he kept his eyes focused on the top, refusing to look down and see how far he was off the ground.
Even though he was only held for a few seconds, it felt like it had been an eternity by the time she finally set them on the table. Dean relished the feeling of solid ground, and immediately sank down, trying to calm his rolling stomach. Sam stepped over and patted him lightly on the back.
"Yeah... first time's no fun." He said, feeling a little vindicated. His first time – hell his first few times had all been a lot worse than this. He felt pretty good that he'd managed to keep it together as well as he had.
"Ugh… yeah, no kidding." Dean said, his face green. Sam stood up, facing Lily.
"Where did you keep the cup?" Sam asked. Now that he was standing on the table and Lily was sitting, they almost were seeing eye to eye. Lily looked down at Dean's figure.
"Is he going to be ok?" She asked, her eyes worried.
"Yeah, he's not so good with heights." Sam said, smiling. Lily nodded, then turned around and retrieved a box. She opened it and displayed the contents, letting Sam peek inside. It was a dusty, old box, almost as tall as Sam was. It was lined with red felt, meant to accommodate a teacup, a saucer and a spoon. The spoon featured a beautiful bone handle, and the copper saucer had a bone rim. Sam grimaced as he remembered that the bone was human. The cup itself was missing, left downstairs after it had been used on Dean.
"Uh, Lily, can you go downstairs and grab the cup, it should be where we found Dean." Sam asked, and watched as the little girl left the room to follow his instructions. "You ready to finish this?" Sam asked his brother, who was just now pushing himself to his feet.
"Yeah. This is so frickin' messed up." He said, kicking at one of the pink plastic cups set up on the table. Sam grinned.
"You're telling me. Hey, we should get those other guys out of the box. If we break this curse or whatever…"
"They'll need to get out of there." Dean said, nodding. "My only question is… how? I'm not jumping off this table." He said, peering off. It was only a foot and a half high, but to him, it was like standing on the side of a three story building. Sam rolled his eyes.
"Let me. I'm pretty sure I can climb down. You get ready to salt and burn this ugly tea set." He said. "You have any salt?"
"No, I'm a complete idiot. Of course I have salt!" Dean snapped. He gritted his teeth. "Sorry. I, uh, I hate this." He said. He couldn't get rid of how it had felt to be held in someone else's hand. Sam nodded.
As he prepared himself to start his climb down the table, he froze as he saw the cat standing in the doorway.
"Holy shit!" He cried out, sprinting to hide behind the box. He couldn't stop his limbs from beginning to shake as he remembered his battle with the massive animal. Dean looked at the cat, freezing in place.
"Okay, no sudden movements." He mumbled to himself. He had to admit, the cat was a lot more terrifying when he was the size of a mouse. The thing's big green eyes were already locked onto him as it slowly moved towards him. If it decided to jump on the table, they were both sitting ducks.
"Mr. Fluffy!" Lily cried, appearing in the doorway. "No, bad kitty!" She stepped over to the table, causing it to shake under Dean's feet with every footstep.
"Holy shit!" He shouted, throwing out his arms his arms as the ground shook under him. His heart pounded as he watched the little girl walk over to him. He still couldn't believe how much it made his heart race to watch someone who usually wouldn't be much taller than his waist stomp over to him at the size of a building. And he was even standing on the table.
He gulped but stood tall. Lily was carrying the cup in her hand, along with the fireplace poker she had just used to dispel the ghost possessing her mother.
Lily reached down to grab the cat, wrapping her arms around its middle. It let out a loud yowl as it squirmed in her arms, trying to escape him.
"You're not supposed to be in here, Mr. Fluffy!" She chastised, setting it down outside and shutting the door. Turning back to the table, her eyes locked onto Dean, causing him to stiffen. "Where's Sam?" She asked, peering around. Dean stepped around to the side of the box away from the door, where Sam sat, his entire body trembling.
"Uh, Sam?" Dean asked quietly. Sam looked up, his eyes wide.
"I-is it gone?"
"Yeah, Lily put it outside." Dean said, holding out his hand. "Come on, we still have a ghost to kill." Sam took it, standing up and forcing himself to stay calm.
"The door's closed?" He asked, glancing around the room again as if the cat might appear in the center of the room somehow. Dean nodded.
"Uh, yeah, Sam. Door's closed. Mr. Fluffy ain't getting back in here anytime soon." Sam took another shaky breath, glancing up at Lily, who confirmed that the cat was gone. Dean was looking at him like he was crazy, but Dean wasn't the one that faced down that elephant-sized feline with nothing more than a pocketknife and adrenaline.
"O-kay." He said, pulling out his pocketknife and easing down the side of the table. It was made of wood, and his small fingers were just able to make handholds out of the rough surface. His pocketknife was small enough to fit in between the wood grain, so he was able to provide a little extra grip to climb down.
Dean watched his brother disappear over the side of the table while he clenched his fists. This whole situation was messed up and he couldn't wait for it to be over. He walked over to the tea set, deciding to start salting the stupid thing. It took him a minute to get himself hauled up the side. The box was about as tall as his shoulders.
He pulled out a small bag of salt that had been stashed in his jacket pocket. As soon as they'd figured out the game, he'd made sure to prepare himself. He was just grateful that he still had it with him.
He walked around the perimeter, slowly sprinkling the salt over the spoon and saucer. He didn't have any lighter fluid, but he hoped the old red felt would be dry enough to burn on its own. Lily stepped over to the table, holding out the cup to him.
"Here's the cup…" She said. She was keeping her voice down, but it still boomed over Dean's head, causing him to flinch a little. How the hell had Sam been like this for an entire day?
"Let's just get this over with." He muttered and waved his hand over to the box. "Put it in there! We have to salt and burn it all for this to end." He shouted, thinking about how weird it was to have to raise his voice to be heard by someone just a foot away. Lily placed the cup in the box and Dean stepped over. He couldn't see Sam anymore, so he just had to hope that he was ok, wherever he was.
Don't worry, there are still some shenanigans to come, but we are rolling into the ending! When I was writing the third act, I really started to feel sorry for Lily. I wrote her to be fairly terrifying in the first act, but I started to grow a soft spot for her when I wrote her little breakdown here. I love the writing process - sometimes your characters surprise you! Let me know what you think with a comment, and I appreciate each and every reader I have!
