On Wednesday morning, Sienna put on her uniform with a mix of nerves and excitement. The crisp purple checked dress and white collar felt strange, a stark contrast to the casual clothes she usually wore. Pippa had helped her pick out the uniform the night before, insisting that the Summer Bay High School uniform was something to be proud of. As she approached the school gate, Sienna took in the sight of the sprawling lawns and the smiling faces of the students milling about. It was a stark contrast to the concrete jungle she was used to in the city.
"You'll be okay, Sienna." Sophie whispered, noticing the tension in Sienna's shoulders. "Just be yourself."
Sienna found her locker and started the daunting task of unpacking her bag. The school was bustling, a cacophony of chatter and laughter that seemed to echo through the corridors. She couldn't help but feel like an outsider looking in, her eyes darting around the sea of unfamiliar faces.
"Hey, newbie!" A boy's voice cut through the noise, and Sienna turned to see a boy with a mischievous twinkle in his eye and a cocky smirk that she immediately recognized as one of those who liked to stir the pot. "You lost or something?"
"I just started here." Sienna said, her voice steady, despite the nerves threatening to overwhelm her. "I'm Sienna."
"I'm Tama," the boy said, sticking out his hand for a shake. His grip was firm, and his smile was genuine. "Welcome to the Summer Bay High. What year are you in?"
"Year 10." Sienna replied, taking his hand. His energy was infectious, and she found herself smiling in return.
"Sienna, is that you?" a girl with a bubbly laugh called out, interrupting their conversation. Sienna's eyes searched the crowd and landed on a face that looked vaguely familiar. It was Carolyn, a girl Sienna knew from when she lived in Kariong.
"Carolyn Harper!" Sienna's eyes widened with surprise, and she couldn't help the squeal that escaped her lips as she rushed over to give her old schoolmate a hug. "What are you doing here?"
"I moved to Summer Bay early last year!" Carolyn exclaimed, hugging Sienna back. "It's such a small world, huh?"
Carolyn then noticed Tama standing next to Sienna, looking slightly puzzled by the sudden display of affection between the two girls. "Oh, hi, Tama!" Carolyn said with a smile, breaking the embrace.
"Hey there, Carolyn!" Tama said, his grin widening.
Sienna looked at her timetable, feeling a little more at ease with a familiar face by her side. "Looks like we have a few classes together," she said, her eyes scanning the schedule.
The bell rang, signalling the start of the school day, and the students dispersed into their respective classrooms. Sienna felt a little less lost as she followed Carolyn through the maze of corridors, their conversation filling the air with a comforting familiarity. When they reached their first class, English, Sienna noticed that Tama was in the same class. He winked at her from across the room, and she couldn't help but feel a slight blush creep up her cheeks. Sophie was also in her English class, and she gave Sienna a warm smile as she sat down next to her.
"Okay, class. Settle down." Donald Fisher's voice boomed through the classroom as he clapped his hands, demanding the attention of the students. The chatter died down, and Sienna took her seat next to Sophie. She felt a strange comfort knowing that she had a friendly face in the class. The downside was Carolyn was in a different English class, but she promised to catch up with Sienna at lunch.
The morning flew by in a blur of new faces and unfamiliar classrooms. By lunchtime, Sienna's nerves had calmed. She had managed to keep up with the classes, thanks to her sharp mind and the fact that she had studied hard at her previous school. She hung out with Tama and his group of friends at lunch, feeling slightly awkward but also relieved to be accepted so quickly.
"So, you into any sports?" a girl named Leilani asked as they sat under the shade of a gum tree, sharing their lunch.
Sienna shrugged, unwrapping her sandwich. "Not really. I'm more of the spectator type."
"You should see the rugby games in Yabbie Creek." Tama said, his eyes lighting up at the mention of sports. "They're intense!"
Junior, Tama's best friend, leaned over to him. "Tell her about the time you scored that epic try in last year's final," he whispered with a smirk.
"It wasn't epic, it was just luck," Tama said, trying to sound modest, despite the pride in his voice.
"Tell me more." Sienna encouraged, taking a bite of her apple.
Tama's cheeks flushed slightly at the prodding. "Oh, alright. The story of that try is legendary." He began, and Sienna found herself drawn into his narrative, his hands gesturing wildly as he described the nail-biting match and the moment he'd dashed through the opposing team's defense to score the winning point.
"Yabbie Creek High was PISSED!" Junior laughed, slapping Tama on the back. "They never saw it coming!"
"Sienna!" a voice called out, and she turned to see Carolyn jogging over. "There you are! I thought I'd lost you!"
"Sorry, Carolyn." Sienna said. "I was just listening to Tama's epic rugby story."
"Oh, that was a fun ride home after the game." Leilani giggled. "You should have seen the look on the Yabbie Creek players' faces."
The end of lunch bell rang, and Sienna reluctantly peeled herself away from the group. She had to admit, Tama's friends were surprisingly welcoming. As she gathered her books, Tama caught her eye and gave her a reassuring nod. "You'll love it here," he said. "Just keep your chin up."
"Will keep that in mind." Sienna said, before smiling at him. While Tama and his friends were going to Music class, Sienna was off to Visual Arts with Sophie and Carolyn. She had always loved to draw, and the idea of spending an hour in a room full of paints and brushes was incredibly appealing.
Sienna entered Ms. Dwyer's Visual Arts classroom, her eyes immediately drawn to the vibrant colors and art supplies scattered across the tables. The smell of paint and clay was oddly comforting, reminding her of the art therapy sessions she'd had back in the city. She took a deep breath and approached the back of the room where Carolyn and Sophie were already setting up.
"Thanks, Ms...uh..."
"Dwyer." The teacher supplied with a warm smile. "Ms. Dwyer, dear."
"Thank you, Ms. Dwyer," Sienna said, feeling a little less anxious under her kind gaze. She took a seat between her foster sister and her old friend, setting out her palette and brushes.
Sienna nodded eagerly, hoping to cement her place in the social fabric of Summer Bay High. Her heart swelled with hope that maybe, just maybe, she'd finally found a place to belong.
