"Dude, you're a girl." A voice said as I looked over to Cody's side of the room. I then looked in the mirror and screamed.
I was a girl with long blonde hair and blue eyes. How was I a girl? Why was I a girl? Was this a result of the shooting star? Had it interpreted my wish of wanting to look different from Cody by making me look drastically different from him? I supposed if that was the case, it would technically be true, but it was definitely not how I wanted my wish to be granted. I did not want to be a girl.
At that point, I looked over to Cody's side of the room where I had heard the voice. The only issue was that it was not his voice. Instead I saw a blonde girl who looked to be the same age as me. If my wish had also turned him into a girl, then that was a really interesting interpretation of such a thing. We still didn't look the same. I wondered if she had realized that she was also a girl. There was also the possibility that this girl wasn't Cody, but I didn't think that was very likely.
"So are you." I remarked as she looked down at herself. She also let out a scream.
"How did this happen?" She questioned after taking several deep breaths. "There's no scientific explanation for how we had just suddenly become girls."
I was pretty sure that it didn't need to be scientific. We knew how it happened, even if it didn't make a lot of sense. The shooting star had done it. Had she not come to the same conclusion that I had. I thought she was supposed to be the smart one of us.
"Science didn't need to. The shooting star granted my wish and I guess we really don't look the same as each other anymore." I commented. It was really weird hearing my voice.
"Well what is Mom going to say when she comes and finds us instead of her two sons?" Cody asked. At that point, the door opened and there she was.
"Hi Mom." I greeted her.
"I was just coming to see if you two were up yet." She declared. At least it was summer and we didn't need to be up at a certain time for school.
"Mom, do we look any different today?" Cody asked. She wasn't acting like we were any different and she didn't seem surprised by the fact that we were girls.
"Not really, Karen." Mom answered. Her name was Karen? That was interesting. "But both of you look like beautiful young women."
I blushed at that. I didn't like being called a young woman.
"Thanks Mom." I replied.
"So what kind of pancakes do you want?" She asked.
"Blueberry." Karen inquired.
"Okay." Mom stated before she left.
"Okay, so Mom thinks that we've always been girls." I declared.
"Well then it's probably safe to assume that other people do as well." Karen answered. That probably was the case. "Why didn't you wish that we had superpowers instead?"
"Because I wasn't thinking about that at the time." I pointed out. "I said the first thing that came to mind. Now we should probably go to breakfast."
We went to the kitchen where Mom had made pancakes. Mom really wasn't that good of a cook but it was hard to mess pancakes up. You just had to follow the instructions on the box. They were in a bit of a weird shape, but they still tasted okay.
I wished that there was someone other than my new sister that I could talk to about it. I decided to call Maddie and see if she could give me any advice.
"Hey Zoey." She greeted me. Maddie was currently a counselor at a summer camp. I knew that one of the campers was Holly O'Neill, but not much else.
"Maddie? Would you believe that I made a wish on a shooting star and somehow turned my brother and I into girls?' I asked before I added. "Oh and everyone else seems to believe that we were always girls."
"Sorry Zoey, I can't really believe that you're not a girl." She remarked. "But let's say that you were telling the truth, what are you going to do?"
"I don't know." I answered before I heard her talking to one of the campers.
"I gotta go, Zoey!" She replied before she hung up suddenly. Well that wasn't any help.
From there, I decided that we need to get dressed. I went to my room and started to look through the dresser on my side of the room.
"Okay, how am I supposed to put this on?" I asked as I took out a bra. I had touched a few of them when kissing girls, but I didn't know how to take them off or put then on.
"There's probably a video on YouTube for that." Karen suggested. Sure enough, there was and it was actually very helpful. "I think yours might be bigger."
"Does that really matter?" I questioned. "Now I just need to see if I can find some pants in here."
It turned out that there were a few pairs of pants, but they were kind of tight. After struggling a little, I just decided to put on something else. I found out that wearing a skirt felt strangely comfortable. I ended up going for a blue long-sleeved top and red skirt.
"Is it just me or are skirts strangely comfortable?" I asked.
"I already knew that they were." Karen remarked. I then stared at her wondering when she would have worn a skirt before. "The pageant, remember?"
"Oh right. You probably would have won if they hadn't found out that you were a boy." I commented.
"I still got my first kiss before you did." She argued. "Let's just go downstairs and see if we can find anything else out."
"And why are you wearing those?" I asked as I referred to the heels on her feet.
"I need to learn how to walk in them." She pointed out.
"I don't think that girls our age really wear heels that much." I countered.
"Let's just go." She remarked before she took a step and promptly fell over. "I meant to do that."
"Sure you did." I replied as I headed downstairs. She made it down a few minutes later. "What took so long?"
"Shut up." She warned me. "Let's go talk to Mr. Moseby and see if he still has our bikes."
"Do you really think that he'll just give them back to us?" I asked. We also didn't even know if he still had them.
"Come on." She instructed as she dragged me over. "Hey Mr. Moseby?"
"What do you girls want?" He asked.
"I was wondering if you could give us our bikes back." She declared.
"I told you to stop leaving them out and you didn't listen." He declared. I supposed that meant that he did still have them.
"Please?" Karen asked as she tilted her head to the side a little. What was she doing?
"Okay fine, but please stop leaving them out." He agreed as he walked off to get them.
"How did you do that?" I questioned in disbelief.
"I just remembered what some girls did to get out of trouble." She remarked.
"I need to use that." I replied.
He went and got our bikes and then were…pink and purple instead of blue and green. Okay that was unexpected, but I supposed that I shouldn't have been surprised that we had some girly bikes.
"So what are we going to do now?" I asked as we took the bikes outside.
"We can to the mall." She suggested. "I already looked inside of my purse and found that I have a credit card in my name."
"Really? Maybe we could buy a PS3." I suggested.
"Yeah I don't think that I want to get one of those." She remarked.
"Why not?" I asked.
"Because there's nothing on it that I want to play. Besides, we don't need to play video games." She proposed. "We're about to turn 15. Not to mention, we're about to start high-school. We should try to look good when we're there. Let's make a strong first impression."
"Shouldn't we be trying to figure out how to change back instead?" I asked her.
"Okay, let's just find out when the next shooting star is going to come by and we can make another wish." She quipped.
"You don't need to be sarcastic." I declared. Yes, I didn't know how we were going to change back, but I wanted to try to find out at least. We couldn't be stuck as girls, could we?
We went got back from the mall, we had…clothes. A lot of clothes. I didn't think we needed this many clothes and I was confused as to why we had so many of them.
"Why did we need to buy this much?" I asked.
"You wanted to keep some clothes that you liked and I wanted to get some that looked good." Karen remarked. I couldn't understand why she was acting so different. "Zoey, if we're going to be like this, we might as well make the best of it."
I couldn't help but be a bit surprised by how she was acting. I expected her to want to try to change back as much as I did or at least want to get back at me for accidentally turning me into a girl, but she didn't seem to want to do either.
"Nia, you need to work here while you're staying with me." I overheard. Moseby was talking to his niece.
"Fuck that." Nia argued. "Maybe I don't want to and you can't make me."
Nia then stormed off and I walked over to him.
"I do not like teenagers…" He muttered. He then noticed that we were staring at him. "You didn't hear that, did you?"
"I did." I answered.
"Well now I have to put up a sign for help wanted for a new candy counter girl." He declared. "Wait a minute. Zoey, how would you like to work for the Tipton?"
"Can you even hire me?" I asked.
"You're at least 15 now, aren't you?" He retorted.
"Not for a few more weeks, but why would you even want to hire me. I thought you didn't like me." I pointed out.
"I realize that we may have not always seen eye-to-eye in the past, but I don't think that there is anyone that I could hire that knows how things work around here as well as you do." He remarked. I supposed that I did spend a lot of time with Maddie at the candy counter and occasionally helped her. "I'll ask your mother."
"Ask me what?" Mom questioned.
"Your daughter was interested in filling the vacate candy counter girl position." Moseby declared. Before I could say anything, Mom spoke up.
"That sounds like a great idea." She agreed. "You can start tonight."
"How much does this job even pay?" I asked.
"You will be making minimum wage plus tips." Moseby declared.
So that night, I was dressed in the same outfit that Maddie usually wore, a blue button-up shirt with a black tie and black miniskirt with knee socks. I felt weird. I probably could do the job pretty well, but I wasn't sure if I wanted to.
"You look good like that." Karen remarked.
"Why aren't you trying to do something to turn us back?" I asked her.
"What am I supposed to do?" She challenged.
"You're the smart one. I think you can figure it out." I proposed.
"Like I said, there's nothing scientific that could change us into girls, so there's probably nothing scientific that could change us back into boys." She pointed out. "That means that there's nothing that I can do, so I've decided to not freak out about it. Now I believe you that need to get to work. I think you'd be great at this job, considering that you were practically Maddie's assistant with all of the time that you spent back there."
I couldn't believe how she was acting. She was being so nonchalant about it. That was one of the words that I learned while I was in summer school. It was basically when seemed to not to care about what was going on. I thought that maybe since I was going to get a fresh start in high school that maybe I should try harder.
I went down to candy counter and as soon as I got there, my phone rang. It was Maddie calling me back.
"Hey, so I can finally talk. Some of the girls were fighting each other." She told me. "What was that you were saying earlier?"
"Would you even believe me if I told you?" I questioned. "Basically, I made a wish on a shooting star and now I'm a girl and so is my sister, but everyone else thinks that we've always been girls, including you."
"You really seem to believe this." She remarked. "What do you want me to do about it?"
"I don't even know. I just want someone to believe me. But right now, I kind of have to work. I'm doing your old job." I explained.
"Well you'd probably be great at it and I think that you'll have a good time." She suggested. "Maybe we can talk more about this later. I can call you again tomorrow."
I sighed. I didn't know if she believed me or not, but I did have to admit that I liked talking to her. I went to counter where Mr. Moseby was there to greet me.
"So one thing that you need to do is take inventory at the start and end of each of your shifts." He instructed. "Take this piece of paper and count all of the product."
I started to do that and I had to say that it was kind of boring, but at least I was doing something. I was counting some of the chocolate when someone interrupted me.
"Hey." A voice interrupted me. I looked to see a boy who looked like he was my age.
"Sorry, this is my first day on the job. Did you want to buy some candy…I mean obviously since you're here at the candy counter…what can I get you?"
"I'll take two Reese's, a Kit-Kat and one of the Tipton brand bars." He told me. "I'm Damon by the way."
"Zoey." I declared. Maddie told me that she always liked to talk to customers. "So where did you come from?"
"What do you mean?" He asked.
"I mean you're staying here at the hotel." I remarked.
"Yes, but my parents and I are just staying here while our house is renovated." He told me. "How much do I owe you?"
"That's going to be $11." I explained. I supposed the prices weren't too bad. The basic candy bars were $2 and some of the fancy ones cost more. "If you don't mind me asking, how old are you?"
"I'm about to turn 15." I answered. I wasn't sure why I told him that.
"Same. Well not about to turn 15. I am 15." He declared. "I should probably get going. Maybe I'll see you again before I leave. You can keep the change."
"Maybe you will." I agreed. I then remembered what Maddie said to all of her customers. "Have a good night."
The rest of the night was uneventful. I was basically selling a lot of candy bars and I got a like a dollar or two as a tip per transaction. By the end of the night, I had sold 43 candy bars and received $50 dollars in tips. I then went to Mr. Moseby.
"So since I can't put you into the system yet, I will be paying you in cash" He explained. Since you worked 4 hours, you will be receiving 40 dollars." He explained. I forgotten the minimum for a Tipton employee was 10 dollars an hour. He then handed me two 20s.
I then headed back to my room. I was kind of tired, even though I probably hadn't done much work. I supposed I mostly just stood on my feet for four hours. I couldn't help but wonder if I would get any of the Tipton employee perks, but I would guess that since I was so young, probably not. Then again, I didn't think that I needed any of the employee perks since Mom was already a Tipton employee and we got those.
When I walked inside, I found that Karen was watching a movie on TV. I didn't think that I had seen it before, but there was a lot of pink on the screen.
"What are you watching?" I asked.
"Mean Girls." She answered. "We're about to start high school in a few weeks and I want to know what it's going to feel like."
I didn't know if watching a movie would be a good way to find out what school would really be like. I was pretty sure that a lot of those were dramatized to make for a better story.
Since she was in the living room, I decided to go to our bedroom and I wanted to change. I needed to try to do whatever I could to find a way to change back. Being a girl was really weird and I was pretty sure that I didn't like it. I didn't know how I was going to change back, but I needed to do my best to try to find a way, even if I was the only one who wanted to do it. The only problem was I didn't know where to start.
So Cody was changed into a girl as well. Her name is Karen and she's played by Kelsea Ballerini. Unfortunately, her reaction to being changed is not one that Zoey wants. She also maybe made a new friend. Damon is played by Logan Lerman. Please don't forget to review.
