Chapter 17: Claude Frollo
Morning came and things were grim. Esmeralda and Wanda were tied to a pyre ready to be burned alive while everyone else were locked in cages.
Phoebus: (Ashamed) All this madness for what: A woman? Frollo lost all reason.
Peter: Believe me. He lost all reason twenty years ago… The day he murdered Quasi's mother on the very steps of Notre Dame.
Phoebus was stunned and disgusted by this news. Frollo was no man of God. The Evil Judge stood beside the innocent women.
Frollo: (Reading a scroll) The prisoners, Esmeralda and Wanda, have been found guilty of the crime of witchcraft. (As drums were being played) The sentence: Death!
The citizens voice their opinions on the matter. The Archdeacon looked outside on the madness but the guards blocked the door to keep him from intervening. Many people spoke out on the matter but Frollo ignored them. He moved to the captured women like a poisonous snake.
Frollo: (Quietly while taking the torch from the executioner) The time has come, gypsies. You both stand upon the brink of the abyss. Yet, even now, it is not too late. (To Esmeralda) I can save you from the flames of this world, and the next. Choose me, or the fire.
Esmeralda spat directly in his face, telling him she'd rather die then be his. Frollo then decided to try Wanda.
Frollo: And what of you? I'd be happy to make you mine. The Warlock has abandoned you. Tell me where the boy is and I'll let you go.
Wanda: (Glaring at him angrily) Here's my counteroffer: Let us go, give me back my sword, and submit to the king and you won't be hurt. Because when I get out of here, you'll feel the wrath of an Angry Mutant and a Defensive Mother-Figure.
Frollo glared at Wanda's answer. He turned to the crowd and decided to proceed.
Frollo: (Quietly) Very well. The boy will be mine. (To the crowd) The gypsies have refused to recant. These evil witches have put the soul of every citizen of Paris in mortal jeopardy.
High above them, Quasimodo was chained up to prevent him from leaving. Sora and Laura watch him drive off his gargoyle friends. Sora decided to call Peter.
Sora: Mr. Peter…
Peter heard Sora's voice, remembering he was still wearing the Auxiliary Communication Eyepiece, which gave him an idea.
Peter: Sora, put Quasimodo on. Hurry!
Peter heard Quasimodo on the other end.
Quasimodo: (Communication) What kind of device is this?
Peter: Never mind that, Quasi. We need your help.
Quasimodo: (Communication) I… I, I can't. My master was…
Peter: You owe Frollo nothing, Quasi! (Stopping for a minute) Sora, cover yours and Laura's ears!
The pair did so and Peter told Quasimodo the truth about his mother. Quasimodo's eyes widened in shock on how the man he was loyal to murdered his mother and lied to him for twenty years.
Peter: Quasi, I turned a blind eye once and it cost me my Uncle Ben. Do you want to make that choice?
Quasimodo looked down at Frollo's madness as he began to burn Esmeralda and Wanda alive. Seeing now the choice, Quasimodo broke free from his bindings. Wanda used her powers to protect her and Esmeralda but she was weakening from the heat of the flames. Sora, wearing his Kid Slingshot gear, gave Quasimodo some rope. The bell ringer leap off the edge, lassoed a gargoyle, and safely landed safely on the pyre. With little to no effort, Quasimodo broke Esmeralda free. A trio of guards came at him but Wanda used her powers to make the fire form the shape of a phoenix and lunged at them, scaring them off. Quasimodo used Wanda's attack as a distraction and climbed back to the top of the church with Esmeralda.
Frollo: (Watching his former minion's actions) Quasimodo!
Making Peter and Phoebus smile, the bell-ringer reaches the top and stands in front of the giant stained-glass window. He holds Esmeralda's body high above his head.
Quasimodo: SANCTUARY! (The crowd cheers) SANCTUARY! (The crowd cheers again) SANCTUARY!
Frollo's anger spikes to its peak as the crowd cheers for Quasimodo's defiance.
Frollo: (To his guard) Captain, seize the cathedral!
The guards thought about objecting but Frollo summoned the Heartless, forcing them to assault the church. Quasimodo brought Esmeralda, still unconscious, into his room and laid her on his bed.
Quasimodo: Don't worry. You'll be safe here.
Sora, putting his Kid Slingshot gear on, took aim and started nailing guards and Heartless. Sora nailed one guard square in the forehead, which made him stagger over to Phoebus' and Peter's cage. Peter took the opportunity to swipe the key then let Phoebus knock him unconscious.
Phoebus: (As Peter started unlocking the cage) That boy of yours is a great marksman.
Peter: (Getting the door open) Thanks. I'll go make sure he's safe. Listen, the Heartless, those Black creatures, they're not church goers.
Phoebus, picking up what he was saying, nodded. Grabbing the guard's spear, Phoebus climbed atop the cage.
Phoebus: (As Peter ran off to change) Citizens of Paris! Frollo has persecuted our people, ransacked our city, and has consorted with demons! Now he has declared war on Notre Dame herself! (Sparking the people's courage) Will we allow it?!
Crowd: NO!
Breaking the gypsies free, all of Paris charged at Frollo and his forces. Phoebus swung his spear at a Shadow and everyone, including Frollo, saw it burst into a ball of light.
Phoebus: (To the people) YOU SEE! GOD FAVOR US THIS DAY!
Quasimodo and the gargoyles smiled as Phoebus and the people helped by taking down guards and forcing the Heartless onto the grounds of the church. Spider-Man came up, ready to fight.
Spider-Man: Sorry I'm late. Traffic was a nightmare.
Quasimodo: Thanks. Esmeralda is safe in my room.
Spider-Man: Don't worry. She's just unconscious. She'll be okay.
Everyone on the cathedral focus on fighting in their own odd manner as Frollo and his men continued to try to force their way inside. Wanda, walking up to five guards with grappling hooks, made her presence know.
Guard: (As they drew their weapons) We can take this witch! She's unarmed and has no powers. And its five against one.
Wanda flared up her powers but only to strengthen her.
Wanda: (Getting into a fighting stance) I don't need my powers against the likes of you.
Spider-Man looked down and saw Wanda beating the tar out of the guards that tried to attack her.
Spider-Man: I am so in love with her.
Hugo: (Turning to look at him) What?
Spider-Man: (Quickly) Nothing!
Wanda knocked around the guards and grabbed one by the throat.
Wanda: (Eerily calm) You guys were following orders, so I won't kill any of you…
The guard smiled but lost it when he saw Wanda's eyes.
Wanda: (Using her powers on her enemies) But enjoy the concussion!
Wanda slammed the guard down, knocking him and the other four unconscious. Spider-Man helped with the lead pot that Quasimodo and the gargoyles used to stop the rest of the guards from getting in but Frollo slipped inside safely. Wanda saw it and grabbed a grappling hook to get up to the others, using her powers to speed up her climb. Quasimodo and Spider-Man ran to check on Esmeralda.
Quasimodo: (As Karen scanned her vitals) Is she…?
Spider-Man: She's alive, buddy. She's just unconscious. (To the kids) You two hide. Frollo's coming.
Kid Slingshot and Laura did so. Quasimodo pretended to be mourning Esmeralda while Spider-Man hid in the shadow.
Spider-Man: (Quietly as Frollo came in) I'd make a great ninja.
Frollo, hiding his dagger, came up and pretended to comfort him. Quasimodo saw Frollo's shadow about to stab him just as Wanda came up.
Wanda: LOOK OUT!
Spider-Man skidded in front of Frollo and used the Wayward Wind to break the dagger.
Spider-Man: (Ready to fight) How dare you treat my friends so shamefully!
Frollo saw he was surrounded and forced outside. While drew his sword and Wanda's, he tried a cowardly tactic to get Quasimodo to help him.
Frollo: Now, now, listen to me, Quasimodo.
Quasimodo: (Angry) No, you listen! All my life you have told me the world is a dark, cruel place. But now, I see that the only thing dark and cruel about it is people like you!
Spider-Man: (Standing ready) Give it up! (With Wanda and Quasimodo ready to fight) It's three against one!
Embracing the darkness in his heart, Frollo lunged at the trio. Esmeralda weakly came out to see them fighting. Kid Slingshot and Laura came up to her and helped her.
Frollo: (Clashing against Spider-Man) I will rip that mask off your corpse, you warlock!
Spider-Man: (Fighting against him) Yeah, that's not going to happen while you drinking the Insanity Wine.
Before Frollo could continue, Spider-Man ducked and let Quasimodo punch Frollo square in the face.
Frollo: (Blind fury) I should've known you'd side with these gypsies and risk your life to help them! Just like your own mother tried to save you!
Quasimodo: (Shocked) So you did do what Spider-Man told me. You did kill her!
Frollo: (Preparing to attack him with Kitetsu) And now, I'll do what I should've done twenty years ago!
Frollo swung the stolen blade at his former servant but Quasimodo proved faster than Frollo thought. Just as he came to the ledge, Wanda ambushed him and kicked him back. Throwing punch after punch, the Scarlet Witch swiped her sword and the sheath back.
Wanda: (Standing ready to fight) I believe this is mine.
Frollo: Filthy Witch!
Frollo was about to swing his blade when he got nailed in the forehead by Kid Slingshot.
Frollo: (Seeing through Sora's disguise) The boy!
Frollo raced towards him and Quasimodo ran towards him. Quasimodo jumped to tackled him but Frollo duck and Quasimodo went over the railing, grabbing a gargoyle just in time.
Everyone: QUASI!
Frollo, blinded by he evil, forgot about Sora and ran to finish off Quasimodo. Standing on the gargoyle, Frollo prepared to finish off.
Frollo: (Raising his sword) And He shall smite the wicked and plunge them into the fiery pit!
Unbeknownst to Frollo, the gargoyle began collapsing under his and Quasimodo's combined weight.
Spider-Man: (Firing a web line) Quasi, catch!
Seeing his friend fire a line, Quasimodo grabbed it and swung off just as the gargoyle began to break. Frollo lost his balance and inadvertently tossed his sword over to the others as they pulled Quasimodo to safety. Clinging to the gargoyle, Frollo saw it come to life and growl at him. Frollo screamed in fear as it broke off. Wanda covered Sora's and Laura's eyes as Frollo plummeted to his death. Quasimodo climbed up to everyone. Spider-Man saw the sword and detected the Tear in it.
Spider-Man: Take everyone downstairs, Wanda. I'll catch up when I can.
Wanda nodded and everyone left.
Sora: (Upset) Ms. Wanda… is it wrong if pray for mercy for the bad man.
Wanda kneeled down and gently smiled.
Wanda: No, sweetie. When God says to love thy enemies, praying for mercy is exactly that.
Sora smiled at Wanda's words, feeling God's light within his heart. When things started calming down and Spider-Man sealed the Tear, the group watched as the happy ending to the story happened as Quasimodo was accepted to the people.
Phoebus: (Walking to the group) On behalf of myself, my friends, the people of Paris… And perhaps God Almighty, we thank you.
Spider-Man: (Shaking Phoebus' hand) You're welcome.
Having been given some horses, Spider-Man and the group rode out of the city to where they could be picked up by the Phantom without a scene happening.
Sora: (As the ship came) Ms. Wanda, I think I liked the ending.
Wanda: (Hugging him) Yeah… Me, too.
Entering the shuttle, they began to leave the world.
