Prologue: A Calm Before the Colossus Part I

Shinganshina District, Wall Maria

Year 845

Ten-year-old Shinji Kaorosu was walking around the town market gathering his usual ingredients for the day. His mother Mikoto had charged him with getting some special type of bread for tonight's dinner. He took two pounds of bread from the merchant and forced it inside the rucksack his mother had given him. He then tossed the graying man three bronze coins and grinned at him. "Thank you, Mr. Otsuko! I'll come back soon!"

The graying man nodded back at the boy smiling.

Shinji's father, Tokou, was busy assisting Dr. Grisha Yeager in his offices.

The Kaorosu and Yeager families had formed quite a bond ever since Grisha's appearance in Shinganshina District many years ago. Tokou Kaorosu, as a young man, had come across Grisha's work and had marveled at his expertise in the medical field. He had practically begged the young doctor to take him under his wing. Grisha, much to his delight, had agreed to do so.

Because of this, Shinji had come to know Grisha's son Eren as the brother he never knew he wanted. Eren looked up to the young Kaorosu boy as a brotherly figure. The two formed an unshakeable bond. Later, the Yeager family took custody of Mikasa Ackerman after the unfortunate death of her parents. She became Eren's adoptive sister as a result. Armin Artlert later met the two adoptive siblings and joined the group. Shinji, Armin, Eren and Mikasa became an unspoken family unit. They were always seen hanging out together and looked out for one another.

Shinji then hoisted the bag of groceries over his back and began to head to the Koarosu family home. He knocked on the door and said, "Mom, I'm home. I have the groceries you wanted." The door quickly opened.

Mikoto Kaorosu then glanced at her dear son and flashed him a warm smile. She was dressed in a mustard yellow dress and had a chef's apron on. "There's a good boy. Come on in! Eren and Mikasa have been eagerly awaiting your return." Mikoto was a woman who aged with true grace. You could hardly make out the wrinkles in her face. Her raven hair fell to her shoulders.

Shinji nodded gratefully to his mother. "Thank you!" As he walked in, he noticed Eren and Mikasa sitting on the family couch.

Eren glanced his way and widely grinned at his adoptive brother. "Shinji you're here! Finally!" He quickly rushed at the young boy and wrapped him in a warm hug.

Shinji let out a small chuckle and hugged the boy back. "It's Good to see you, too, Eren. What are you all doing here?"

Eren then broke the hug. There was an excitable look in his eyes. "I wanted you to come with me to see the Scout Regiment return from their latest expedition. They should return soon."

Shinji let out a frustrated sigh. This again. He then put a hand on the boy's shoulder. "How many times have I told you to let the Scout dream go?" Shinji then shot Mikasa a concerned look. "I thought you had talked him out of this."

Mikasa looked back at him with a sad look in her eyes. She cast her eyes to the ground and lightly tugged at the red scarf around her neck. A light blush came across her face. "I've tried to convince him against it. He still won't listen to me though."

Shinji grunted in frustration and nodded at her. He then focused his eyes on Eren. "I know Eren. He won't take no for an answer. Maybe he'll let this go if I humor him." Shinji cleared his throat. "Alright, Eren. I'll come with you!"

Eren then thrust a fist in the air. "Awesome! You won't regret this!" Shinji rested his hand against his face and shook his head sadly. "I take it Mikasa is coming with us?"

Mikasa then got up off the couch and straightened the scarf around her neck. "I am."

Shinji let out a sigh. He approached his mother and handed her the rucksack of groceries he'd gathered. "I'll be back soon, Mother. Eren wants me to come watch the Scout Regiment return with him."

Mikoto gave her only son a smiling nod. "Ok then. I'll take care of dinner from here. Please don't be late getting home!"

Shinji nodded understandingly to his mother. "I promise I won't be a minute late!" He then started out the door.

Eren and Mikasa then picked up their log packs, fastened them around their backs and followed the young boy.

Town Square, Shinganshina District, Wall Maria

Year 845

As the three friends were approaching the town square, they noticed a large conglomeration of townspeople gathering around the square. The Scout Regiment was just returning from their latest expedition outside the walls. Some were bandaged and riding on horseback. Others were laying in carts being driven by their comrades. All of them were getting looks of shock, awe and disgust from the gathering crowd. All the men had forlorn and aghast looks on their faces. They were bandaged up in various places on their face and body. The atmosphere was so quiet that anyone listening could clearly hear the Regiment's horses click-clocking with the ground. Shinji and Mikasa gazed at the men with sympathetic looks on their faces.

Shinji muttered to himself and shook his head. Poor fools! Risking their lives for nothing.

Mikasa let out a frustrated sigh and then turned towards Eren. The boy looked had an excited expression on his face. "This is so awesome! Look at them! They are out there bravely fighting for a future! Humanity's future!" He then sent the Scout Regiment a happy wave.

Commander Keith Shadis wasn't even registering the people around him at the moment. The man's face was one of no emotion at all. All those men and our base lost! And for what! They all died for nothing! The man then clenched his fists in rage and felt tears in his eyes. Damn it!

Suddenly, an old woman appeared before him and said, "Commander Shadis, do you have a moment?"

Commander Shadis then warily met the woman's eyes. "Yes what is it?"

The old woman had tears in her eyes and a frantic expression on her face. "My son left with you when the expedition started. His name was Gertrud Baker. I was wondering if he returned with all of you. Please tell me where he is!"

Commander Shadis then gazed at the woman with a guilty expression in his eyes. Scout Baker. I saw him die in my arms. He then gripped the woman by the arms and fell to his knees. He finally broke down in tears and yelled, "Scout Baker was a brave Scout! One of the bravest I have ever known! But he died for nothing! The Titans slaughtered about ten percent of the entire Regiment. We have no gains to show for our losses! This is all we have left of him!" Commander Shadis then pulled out what looked like a bloodied arm wrapped in bandages.

The old woman's eyes widened in shock at her son's remains. She then dropped down to her knees and practically broke down in tears.

Eren's eyes widened in shock. They fought so hard! And came back with so little! That woman is crying! She will probably never see her son again. Reality then hit the young boy like a brick. He stared at his hands for a moment. Their sacrifices were necessary. Humanity will never beat the Titans if we don't make sacrifices. I must escape these walls and find true freedom. It would help if I exercised some caution though. He then began overhearing some of the commotion around him.

Two villagers were conversing amongst one another. "What a waste of our tax dollars! They are all going to these fat pigs so they can just go out and get themselves killed."

Eren felt the rage building up from within him. His fists tightened in anger.

Mikasa and Shinji both shot a quick glance at him.

Mikasa could tell from the look on his face that he was about to pop off again. He was practically glaring at the two villagers with daggers in his eyes. She then gazed at Eren with melancholy eyes. "Oh, Eren." She put a hand on her shoulder. "Eren, what's wrong?"

However, Eren wasn't listening to her. He picked up a small stick that was near him. He quickly ran at one of the men and thwacked him on the head with the stick. "You asshole! Those men died for our freedom!"

Shinji and Mikasa widened their eyes at this.

Shinji gritted his teeth in frustration. Dammit Eren! I have to get him out of there before he gets himself hurt!

Mikasa let out an anguished sigh. Eren. I have to get him out of there.

The man then turned around to face Eren with a look of anger in his eyes. "Why you little-"

Luckily for Eren, Mikasa and Shinji were already dragging him by the scruff of his neck and pulling him away from the two men.

The man yelled out after them. "That's right! You better run pipsqueak!"

Shinji and Mikasa then ran into a back alley, dragging Eren with them. They let go. Some of the firewood Eren had managed to gather splintered on the ground.

Eren managed to get back on his feet and glared at both. "What the hell was that for!"

Shinji felt his temper rise but managed to calm himself down. He shot Eren a glare and shook him by the shoulders "You were about to pick a fight you were never going to win. You were about to get your ass handed to you again." Shinji then let him go and spoke calmly, "I understand why you are upset Eren. For the record, I think what the Scout Regiment is doing out there is both honorable and dangerous. I respect them for it. But those men had a point. The Titans haven't breached the Walls for eight hundred and forty-five years. Humanity is safe behind these walls. There is no point in trying to reclaim land from our Titan enemies. All the Regiment is doing is sending lambs to the slaughter!"

Mikasa then joined in. She looked Eren dead in his eyes and pleaded, "Is that what you want Eren? Think of your mother and father! We have people waiting at home for us! Imagine if that old woman was your mother. She would be absolutely crushed if the Commander had given her your remains! Do you really want to put her through that kind of loss? I understand you are going to do what you feel is right. I'm with you all the way." Mikasa began to choke up a bit but managed to regain control of her emotions. "Please understand this. All Shinji and I want is for you to think this through."

Eren fell to his knees and was silent for a while. Mikasa and Shinji both let out a sigh of relief. Maybe we finally got through to him. They both kneeled beside him and wrapped him in a big hug.

Eren then let out a sigh. He could feel his whole-body shake. I need a moment. He then glanced at both. "Please just give me a moment. I need to clear my head."

Both Shinji and Mikasa nodded at him. They broke the hug and took some steps back.

Eren stood up and rolled his shoulders back. He finally exhaled the long breath he had been holding in. Fucking hell. They have a point. I want to be free. But Shinji, Armin and Mikasa are my best friends. My mother means something to me. They have had my back since day one. If I turn my back on them to follow my dream, then what kind of man does that make me. I may be impulsive, but I am not a fool. He then turned to face his two best friends with a determined expression on his face. "I'll think about it! I won't promise anything though!" He then let out the breath he was desperately holding in. He then flashed both a nervous smile.

Mikasa smiled warmly at him. She tugged lightly at the red scarf around her neck. Her face flushed a bit. "That's all we're asking of you, Eren!"

Shinji gave his adoptive brother an approving nod. "Indeed."

Mikasa then cleared her throat, "We should be on our way home Eren. Your mom is expecting us home soon."

Eren then grumbled to himself," Right."

Mikasa then let out a sigh and turned her gaze on Shinji. "And Shinji?"

He turned to look at her. "Yeah?" The raven-haired girl then flashed him a small smile. "Your father is over at our house discussing things with Dad. I hear they are going on an important business trip to Wall Sina. Would you like to go see him?"

Shinji let out a frustrated sigh. Of course! He decides to go on some crazy trip and doesn't tell us. He glanced at Mikasa and duly nodded. "Yeah sure."

Yeager Household, Shinganshina District, Wall Maria

Year 845

Eren, Mikasa and Shinji quickly trekked the way towards the Yeager household.

Eren called out as they entered the house. "We're home! We brought some firewood as well!" There was some bitterness in his tone.

Carla Yeager turned around and smiled warmly at her only son. "Ah you're back! Welcome home you two!" She then spotted Shinji behind Eren and Mikasa. The woman's eyes opened in realization. "Hello Shinji! It is so good to see you again!"

The tall boy gave her a nod. "Nice to see you too Mrs. Yeager!"

Grisha was sitting at the dining table with Tokou discussing their essential business trip. Mikasa immediately put her firewood in the wooden chest and began washing dishes.

Eren then chatted up his dad. "Dad, where are you and Tokou going on your trip?" Grisha gave his son a slight nod. "Shinji's father and I are visiting Wall Sina to see a client. They need our assistance with a medical issue. We should be back in a week."

Tokou turned to Shinji and gave him a nervous grin. "Yes, I'm sorry, my boy. I'll have to miss dinner again."

Shinji just shrugged his shoulders and looked away from the man. "Whatever."

Tokou sighed to himself. Someday my boy. You will understand why I've done what I have done. I just hope you will forgive me someday.

Eren gave his father a curt nod and dumped his firewood in the firewood chest.

Carla approached him and said"Aw l, itooks like somebody was working hard to keep us fueled for the next few days!"

Eren looked at her warily. "Yeah whatever."

Carla let out a frustrated sigh. "Oh, Eren. Why are you always such a difficult child?" She then noticed that Eren's earlobes were red. Carla shook her head and pulled at the earlobes.

Eren then glared at her," What was that for?"

Carla responded sweetly, "Your earlobe is red my sweet boy. That means you are hiding something. Mikasa helped you out again didn't she?"

Eren merely grunted in response.

Carla thought to herself. Yup that is what I thought. She turned Eren's face towards hers. There was a pleading look in her eyes. "Eren why are you always like this? What is bugging you? C'mon you can tell me. I'm your mother."

Eren sighed and felt his defenses break down a little. I should communicate with her. I don't expect her to understand but I should try to talk to her. He took a deep breath and felt all the tension leave his body. Here goes. He looked his mother in the eyes for the first time and stated, "I hate it here Mom. We are nothing but prisoners here in a prison of our design. There is freedom outside the walls. I know this. Armin told me a while ago. I want to fight for our real home out there. That's why I'm so fascinated with the Scouts. I want to help reclaim the land we've lost.

Carla Yeager suddenly felt a volcano of rage rise inside of her. The nerve! She grabbed her son by the shoulders and rested her forehead against his. Her eyes were full of a type of rage only a mother could possess. "You listen to me Eren Yeager! You get that ridiculous thought out of your head right this instant! I will not have my son become Titan fodder! You are the only child I have, and I will not lose you to those suicidal maniacs! Am I clear!"

Eren looked back at her with eyes that spoke of equal rage. "Stop yelling at me!"

Suddenly, Grisha spoke with a calm tone. "It's a nightmare Eren. You have no idea what life is like out there."

Both Carla and Eran looked at him with shock.

Eren focused his gaze on his father and spoke, "No you don't understand. I get that it is dangerous. I am not stupid. I know that I would be facing certain death on the outside. But taking that chance has got to be better than this. The Scout Regiment has a dream that one day we can reclaim the land lost to our ancestors. I believe in that dream and I won't let it go! Otherwise, this nightmare will never end!"

Everyone stared at Eren with pure shock in their eyes.

Grisha's eyes widened for a moment. He then readjusted his glasses. "I see now." The older Yeager stood up from his chair and started to walk out of the house. "Excuse me. Tokou and I are late for the ferry." He turned his gaze towards Tokou. "I expect you at the ferry as soon as possible, Tokou. Is that clear?"

Tokou then gave the man a respectful bow. "Yes sir."

Carla Yeager's eyes widened in fear as she watched her husband walk away from her. "Wait Grisha! At least scold the boy or talk him out of this lunacy!" She ran forward and tightly grabbed the man by his sleeves. "He's your son."

Grisha sighed ruefully and turned towards her. He put a hand on her shoulder and stated plainly, "My dear wife. Can you not see that words will not sway him? He has already decided that this is what he wants to do. Nothing I say now will change that."

Carla let out a gasp and covered her mouth. Tears began flowing out of her eyes. She started sobbing softly.

Grisha shook his head sadly. "I'm sorry, Eren. I wish I had done better than to lead you to this fate." He then glanced at Eren. "Eren!"

The boy stood at attention. "Yes sir!"

Grisha eyed the boy thoughtfully. "I want you to promise me you will behave! If you behave, Tokou and I will show you and Shinji what we've been working on in the cellar." Grisha then showed Eren the pure gold necklace around his neck. It had a key on it.

Eren's eyes suddenly brightened up. Yeah! I've always wanted to see what was in the cellar! "You got a deal!"

Shinji just muttered out. "Sure why not." He then crossed his arms.

Grisha then gave his son one final nod. "Alright I'm off then!"

Tokou spoke up, "I'll catch up with you later Grisha! I need to speak with my son before we go."

Shinji then raised an eyebrow at his father. What in the hell would he want to talk about? I have no interest in speaking with him. He is almost never home, and he has never spent an iota of time with me.

Grisha gave his longtime partner a nod. "Just don't be late!"

Tokou nodded back at him.

Grisha then left the house.

Eren, Mikasa and Carla followed him outside.

Soon, it was just Tokou and his son in the Yeager home.

Tokou smiled at his son and said, "Now, Shinji, sit with me for a moment. I have some important things to tell you."

For the first time in his life, Shinji was glaring at his father with daggers in his eyes. All the angst and the betrayal that he had been holding in for years came out. "Why should I? You've never once engaged me in conversation unless it was to inform me that you would be late for dinner or away on some trip! When I was little, you were never around to console me when I cried or even to acknowledge my existence! Mom was always the one who took care of me!" Shinji could feel the rage build from within him. "All I have ever wanted was a normal day where we could spend time as a family! I never thought I was asking for much! Just one day!" He then planted both hands on the table and got in the man's face. "So before I do anything, you are going to tell me why you abandoned me! Why you have abandoned Mother for so long! What was so damn important that you had to forsake your own family?

Tokou took in a deep breath. It is a risk. But this is the only way I can make him understand. Please forgive me Grisha. The bearded and balding man then stood up and grabbed his briefcase. He opened in and placed it on the table. "Take a look at this."

Out of curiosity, Shinji sat down and started looking through the files. What was the Kaorosu Bloodline? What was the history of the Kaorosu family? What was the Sokken Risu? As he analyzed everything, Shinji was left with more questions than answers. He stared up at his father with a shocked expression. "Father, I do not understand."

Tokou then spoke gently and put a hand on the boy's shoulder. "Then let me start from the beginning. The Kaorosu clan has the ability to transform into a Titan. We also have the ability to control groups of Titans and make them fight for us. We are not part of the Nine Titans however. Long ago, our abilities were used by a king to fight a war against an empire of great size. We were supposed to be cloaked in secrecy, but the enemy found us and slaughtered our numbers down to one. The lone survivor was your great-grandfather Kyoshi Kaorosu. He survived and escaped to these walls. That bloodline now survives through you. That is why you must remember this last bit I tell you now." Tokou then leaned in and whispered in his son's ear "Retake Eldia and reclaim our people's land at any cost! Is that understood?"

Shinji suddenly felt his whole body shaking. "I don't understand at all, but I'll say yes. ""Yes, Father!" Shinji saluted his father. Tokou took a deep breath. "There, I cannot say anymore. Not that I know of much else anyway." He stood up and made for the door. Shinji stammered out, "Wait, I have so many questions! Don't go!"

Tokou sighed sadly and stated, "I'm sorry my son. I have nothing else to tell you." He then kneeled before his only son and said, "I am sorry that I couldn't be a real father to you my boy. Grisha and I needed to discover our peoples' history so that the Eldian people could finally be free from these walls that have caged us in. That is what lies in that cellar. That is why you and Eren must venture down there somehow. Within that cellar resides the last hope of the Eldian people." The man then gave his son a ring. It was made of pure gold and had an emerald in the middle. "This ring is the Sokken Risu. It is the key to unlocking our Command power. It has been passed down from generation to generation in the Kaorosu clan. Guard it well. I was going to give it to you when you got older. However, it seems that fate has forced my hand." Tokou then slipped the ring on Shinji's hand. It fit exactly like a glove on his finger. The ring let off a crackle of electricity as it connected with the finger.

Shinji let out a grunt in pain. That hurt!

Tokou then grasped the ring finger and spoke in a serious manner, "When you want to activate your power, just focus mentally on a goal you want to accomplish and self-harm yourself. You may use this power at your own discretion. Just know that once you do, be prepared for the worst case scenario. As you already know, many people in the walls aren't fond of Titans."

Shinji gave him an understanding nod.

Tokou then continued, "Another important thing to remember is that you must keep our ability and all I have said to you a secret at any cost. The only person who can know is Eren. If anyone finds out about any of this, you and him will be killed on the spot. You understand me? The fake king is a puppet of the Marleyans and he has been successful in killing or silencing anyone who dares speak of the Eldian Empire. He truly fears our people. You must be careful who you trust. It doesn't matter what Regiment they are in. The king and his elites have spies everywhere. You understand?"

Shinji gave his father a dutiful nod. "Yes Father!" Tokou then kissed his son on the forehead. Shinji felt like his heart was going to beat out of his chest. He showed me affection for the first time. "Goodbye my son. Remember what I told you and that I love you!"

Shinji then watched with tears and his father's silhouette disappeared. He reached out to him, but only felt gentle whisps of air on his fingers. Father.

Prologue: Shinganshina Part II

Outside the Yeager Residence, Shiganshina

Year 845

Eren was waving at his father as he was walking away from the house. "Have a good trip!"

Carla Yeager crossed her arms and let out an anguished sigh. I don't care what Grisha says! I won't let my boy join the Scouts! She then walked up to Eren and pulled at his left cheek.

He glanced up at her and scowled, "Hey what was that for!"

Carla sternly spoke, "You listen to me mister! I don't care what your father says! You are not joining the Scouts!" Eren turned away from her and loudly huffed. "I don't need this!" He then ran off.

Shinji then walked out of the house. He had a confused look on his face. "What's going on?"

Carla shouted out after him. "Eren wait!" She let out a sigh. That boy. She then glanced at both Shinji and Mikasa with a worried look in her eyes. "You two! Please come here!" She then placed her hands on both of their shoulders. "I need you both to promise me that you two will protect Eren at all costs, even if it's from himself. The boy will get himself killed if nobody watches over him!"

Mikasa clutched tightly at the red scarf around her neck and nodded dutifully. "Of course Mother. I'll protect him with my life."

Shinji gave Carla a brisk nod. "Of course ma'am! You can count on us!"

Mikasa then shot a glance at Shinji. "Come on! He went down that alley." She then ran off after Eren. Shinji followed.

Back Alley. Shiganshina District, Wall Maria

Year 845

Eren Yeager was running as fast as he could through Shiganshina District. The pent-up rage he was feeling inside was almost fueling his gait. As he was headed down a walkway, he spotted Armin getting bullied by a group of bullies. He focused his gaze on them and yelled, "Hey assholes! Leave him alone!"

The lead bully then let go of Armin's shirt and switched his gaze towards Eren. He let out a laugh. "Well look who it is! Eren Yeager! Have you come back for another beating?"

They then noticed Shinji and Mikasa behind Eren. The lead one's eyes then widened in horror. "Shit! Mikasa and Shinji are with him! This isn't worth the headache! Let's get out of here!" The group of bullies then hightailed it.

Eren shouted back at them. "Yeah you better run!" He then ran up to Armin and helped the boy pull himself up off the ground.

Arimin didn't look at him and kept his eyes focused on the ground. His whole body was shaking uncontrollably. "I'm sorry Eren! You have to save my skin again!"

Eren half-grinned at his longtime friend and put his hand on his shoulder. "Ah it was nothing! That is what friends are for!"

Shinji and Mikasa finally stopped in their tracks and took a breath. Shinji looked up at Eren with irritation in his eyes. Moron.

Outskirts, Shinganshina District, Wall Maria.

Year 845

Shinji, Eren, Mikasa and Armin were all sitting on the steps in the outskirts of the district.

Eren, Mikasa and Shinji had just gotten done asking Armin why the bullies had targeted him. Apparently, they targeted him because he had been going off about life outside the walls again. This had caused a massive argument between Shinji and Eren over whether there was actual life outside walls.

Eren then got in Shinji's face and screamed, "Why can't you people just let us dream? We don't even know what's out there."

Armin let out a rueful sigh. "Eren please calm down. You're making a scene!"

Eren took a moment to calm himself and turned his head away from Armin. "Right sorry."

Armin sighed and continued, "I don't blame Shinji for being skeptical. The walls have been a part of our lives for so long that it is hard to believe life exists without them. The government and humanity would rather believe in a false sense of safety than take the chance to go beyond the walls. I can't blame them for not having faith like you or me do. It's part of human nature."

Eren then tightened one of his fists until it turned white. "Yeah well to hell with those cowards. If they want to live in this prison, then let them. I refuse to die like human cattle!"

Shinji grunted in frustration. Idiot! People can hear you! He was about to yell at Eren.

Mikasa, however, beat him to it. She stood up and spoke in a stern tone, "Eren that's enough! People are going to hear you!"

Eren glanced at her for a moment and let out a grunt in frustration. "It doesn't matter if they do! We all know these walls won't hold forever!"

Suddenly, a large bolt of electricity hit the ground in front of Wall Maria. The corresponding earthquake shook the whole ground. Eren, Shinji, Mikasa and Armin were all shaken off their feet. They managed to maintain their balance.

Shinji sputtered out, "What the hell was that?"

Eren glanced back at him wide-eyed. "I'm not sure!"

Armin then realized everyone was running towards the wall. I got to see what is going on! He then ran after the group.

Eren called out after him. "Armin wait!" He and the others followed Armin.

Shinganshina District, Wall Maria

Year 845

Eren, Armin, Shinji, and Mikasa had gathered with a large group of onlookers who were watching the wall. The lanterns on the various homes and shops swayed around, and the crowd could hear the sound of large footsteps. A giant Titan hand firmly grasped the top of the wall. Armin's eyes widened in horror. "No, it couldn't happen now. That wall is over fifty meters high."

The Armored Titan then kicked a hole through the Wall. The force from the kick was so strong that part of the town was destroyed in a large explosion of rock and rubble. Big chunks of rock were raining from the sky and smashing people to bits. The situation had devolved into significant chaos. Titans were slowly infiltrating the city and grabbing at people as they ran. People were running for their lives and grabbing whatever they could with them.

Shinji, Eren, Mikasa and Armin all stood in shock. Armin took a few steps back. There were tears in his eyes. He was shaking all over. "No this can't be happening!"

Shinji stammered out, "D-Damn it! How did they get over the wall!"

Armin then shot a glance at Shinji. "We need to get out of here now!"

Shinji then shook his head sadly. "You guys go on ahead and get out of here! I need to check on my mother!" Shinji then ran towards his mother's house.

Armin cried out, "Shinji wait!"

He then realized something: "Wait, where's Eren?" He saw the green-eyed boy slowly rushing towards the wall, his eyes glazed over. Mom is all alone at the house! I have to save her!

Mikasa's eyes widened in horror. He's walking towards the Titan! "Eren wait!" She immediately rushed after him.

This left Armin all alone. He gripped both sides of his head in fear. "We're all going to die here!"

Yeager Household, Shiganshina District, Wall Maria

Year 845

Eren managed to make it to the house. What he saw shocked him to his core. He covered his mouth with a hand and felt tears sting his eyes. The Yeager home was caved in. Carla was trapped under a mountain of rubble.

Mikasa had managed to catch up with him. She shouted out, "Eren are you alright?" She then took note of the situation. The girl took a couple of steps back. No! How did this happen?

Eren managed to get his composure back and turned back towards Mikasa. "Mikasa help me get rid of this rubble! We need to get Mom out of there!"

Carla noticed her son and weakly gazed up at him with pleading eyes. "Eren wait!"

Mikasa and Eren then ran over to Carla and tried to lift up the large branch that had pinned Carla down.

They tried over and over again to lift it up, but the branch wouldn't budge. The two then heard footsteps nearby. They looked to their left and saw two twelve-meter Titans converging on their position.

One of them had short, baggy blonde hair and an evil grin on her face.

Eren then turned to Mikasa and shouted, "Hurry up! We don't have much time!" Mikasa replied, "I'm trying!"

Carla let out a sad sigh and looked her son deep in his eyes. There was a fierceness in her eyes he had never seen before. "Listen to me Eren! They are coming for you! Take Mikasa and get out of here!"

Eren tried one one more time to lift the fallen trunk. "Not without you! We aren't leaving without you!" Carla was both saddened and touched by her son's devotion to her. Eren my sweet boy! She could feel herself about to break down in tears, but managed to control herself. She then spoke in a much more urgent tone. "Sweetie please! My legs are completely broken! Even if you did manage to break me out of here, I can't walk my way out."

Eren was staring at her with tears in his eyes. He was practically shaking with anger. "Then I'll carry you!"

Carla then glared at him with pure fury in her eyes. "Will you just listen to me for once in your life? I'm asking you to do one thing for me Eren! I want you to stay alive! You hear me!" She then turned her gaze to Mikasa. "Mikasa please make him see reason!"

The raven haired girl, however, was too shaken up to muster a response. She tried again to lift up the branch. "I can't."

Carla then started sobbing. She looked up at Eren with watery eyes. " Listen to me Eren. Do you want all three of us to die here?"

Suddenly, Hannes swooped in with ODM gear. Carla noticed the man's presence and sent him a pleading look. "Hannes take the children and get them out of here!"

The blonde, mustached man half-grinned at her. "Come now Carla! There is no need for that! I'm a trained soldier! Killing Titans and saving lives is what I do!" He then drew out his blades and made a direct run towards the lone Titan approaching the four of them.

Carla yelled after him. "No please don't!" Hannes had a determined look on his face. C'mon now. You are a soldier. This is what you trained for. Make good on the debt you owe. As he got closer and closer to the Titan, however, Hannes felt his resolve shrink in a matter of seconds. The Titan had him beat by several feet. It was also grinning at him with an unflinching smile that never seemed to go away. The smile practically unnerved the man and had him shaking in his boots. Hannes felt his whole body freeze at that moment. There is no way I can take on a big Titan like that without becoming its next meal. But I can't just abandon Eren and Mikasa. He let out a rueful sigh. Carla I hope you will forgive me one day! I'm so sorry! He then quickly rushed back, grabbing Eren and Mikasa and running as fast as he could from the Titan approaching them.

Carla looked up at the blonde-haired man with a grateful smile on her face. Her eyes were swimming in tears. Her voice was a bit shaky. "Thank you Hannes!"

Eren was screaming his lungs out and trying to wriggle his way of Hannes's grasp. "No! You bastard! What are you doing? We have to go back! We can't just leave her!"

Carla then outstretched a hand towards her only son. "I love you Eren! You hear me! Please stay alive!" The well of emotion then burst within her. The memories of her family flashed within her mind. Tears flowed from her eyes and she covered her mouth in order to quiet her sobbing. "Don't leave me!"

The tall, blonde haired Titan then picked her up with relative ease. Carla then stared at it with rage in her eyes. "Let me go you brute!" She then began banging her fists on its giant hand. The Titan then used a couple of fingers on its other hand to snap her neck. She slumped back.

Eren could only watch on in horror. "No!"

Mikasa couldn't bear to keep watching.

The blonde-haired Titan then opened its gaping jaws and chomped down on her. Bits of blood went everywhere.

Eren was just too stunned to react. I failed. I couldn't save her. Memories of his past fights with her flashed in his mind. I was such a brat. I was so focused on my dream of seeing the outside world. I never realized how important she indeed was to me. How much she truly cared? I threw it all away like it was nothing! And now I have nothing.

Eren then started wailing uncontrollably.

Mikasa was sobbing quietly to herself.

Hannes let out a sigh. I'm sorry you two. I failed you both.

Kaorosu Household, Shiganshina District, Wall Maria

Year 845

Luckily for Shinji, the road to his house wasn't far. He quickly found the house. What he saw had him in stunned silence. The house was complete rubble.

Shinji's eyes widened in horror. Mom! He quickly ran to the debris site and sifted through as much rock as he could.

He found Mikoto Kaorosu barely alive and breathing. Her dress and chef's apron were soiled with dirt and rock. He quickly took her hand in his. "Mother it's me! I'm here to get you out!"

The woman let out a series of weak coughs. Her voice was raspy. "S-Shinji my dear son! You must go! Get out of here while you still can!"

Shinji looked at his mother with fury in his eyes. "The hell I am! I'm not leaving you here!"

Mikoto then flashed him a weak smile. She then gestured for him to get closer to her. Shinji did as she asked. With all the strength she could muster, she caressed his left cheek and kissed him on the forehead. She then brushed his cheek with a couple of fingers and gazed up at him with teary eyes. "Please Shinji. You are the last of our line. The only one other than Eren who can save humanity's future. If you die here with me, the nightmare of the Titans will never end. The Kaorosu clan must do its part to build humanity a new future someday. That means you must go."

Shinji's eyes widened at her. "How do you know about all that? I wasn't under the impression Father had told anyone else but me." The older woman smiled again at him. "When you were a baby, I was given a vision. It showed me your true purpose." Shinji raised an eyebrow. "And that is?" Mikoto smiled warmly at her boy. "You are the one destined to be the second in command to the one who commands the Command Titan. Your destiny is to decide humanity's fate alongside that person. That is your fate." She then let out a chuckle. "Judging by the realization in your eyes, your father has already told you. So you know my words ring true!"

Shinji felt his fists shake with anger. I don't want to leave her behind! But she is right! I have a duty to my ancestors. I have a duty to my great-grandfather to save humanity. He then gently wrapped his mother in a hug. Tears were streaming down his face "I'll miss you Mother! I love you so much!"

Mikoto then put a hand on her son's back and started gently rubbing it. "And I love you my son! I'll be watching from above!" She then went limp in his arms. Shinji's eyes opened in realization. "Mother!" He then put an ear to her chest. She isn't breathing! No! Don't leave me now! He then began shaking her relentlessly. "Mom!" He finally started sobbing uncontrollably.

Two Garrison soldiers then spotted the young boy and his mother. They had been observing everything beforehand and just sadly shook their heads. One of them, a Garrison soldier by the name of Roarke, dropped down and walked up to Shinji. He then put a hand on his shoulder. "Come on kid. We need to get you out of here and on the last transport outta Maria! It's the only way out!"

Shinji didn't say a word. He just gave his mother a final kiss on the forehead and laid her to rest on the ground. At least she is free of this nightmare. I can take some peace in that. He then allowed for the two Garrison soldiers to pick him up and lead him to safety.

Hannes was still busy carrying Mikasa and Eren to safety. He was struggling with every step. The initial look of shock on Eren's face suddenly gave into rage. He glanced back at Hannes with rage in his eyes. He then struck the blonde-haired man violently in the back of the head.

Hannes let out a frustrated grunt. "Damn it! Stop!" The man was suddenly stopped in his tracks.

Mikasa then looked up at Eren in shock. Eren.

Eren yelled back, "You son of a bitch! We almost had her! Why did you come! Why!" He then elbowed Hannes hard in the back of the neck. Hannes grit his teeth. Stupid kid! That hurt! He then threw Eren off his back. The green-eyed boy then hit the gravel hard.

Mikasa's eyes went wide with worry. "Eren!" She managed to wriggle herself out of Hannes's grasp and immediately dashed towards her adoptive brother. She gingerly put a hand on his back and helped him stand up. "Are you alright?"

Eren was shaking all over. Hannes let out a sigh and approached the both of them. He then kneeled before them. "Look there was nothing you could have done for her you understand. You are just a kid. You're weak."

Eren felt his temper rise up again. How dare you! He then raised up a fist and tried to throw a punch at the man.

Hannes quickly caught it in his hand. He felt tears roll down his cheeks. "I'm no better! When it came down to protecting you three, I couldn't stand my ground! Your mother died because I am nothing but a coward!"

Eren's eyes widened in shock. There was an uncomfortable silence between the two. Hannes then stood back up. He then led the two adoptive siblings by the hand and began walking them towards the evacuation point. "I'm sorry."

Mikasa suddenly felt a headache come on. Memories of her parents' deaths flashed in her mind. She stared back at the ruins of Shinganshina. It's happening all over again.

Evacuation Point, Shinganshina District, Wall Maria

Year 845

The evacuation point between Wall Maria and Wall Rose was currently crammed to the brim with refugees from the now destroyed Shiganshina District. It was a total disaster as the men and women of the Garrison Regiment were trying to get them on the boats in an orderly fashion. They weren't allowed to bring any personal belongings as the Regiment needed as much space as possible to store as many refugees as possible on the ships.

Armin Artlert was standing up looking for any signs of his friends.

His grandfather took a glance at him and stated calmly, "Armin please have a seat."

Armin turned towards his grandfather and nodded. "I promise I will once I see my friends."

Armin's grandfather gave the blonde-haired boy a nod. Armin then took another look and spotted Eren, Mikasa and Shinji in line to get on the water boats. Armin's face immediately brightened up. There they are. He then noticed the sullen expressions on their faces. What happened to them? Armin's father then spoke calmly, "Best not to speak with them right now. They have probably been through a lot." Armin gave his father an understanding nod.

A row of Garrison soldiers stood behind stationary cannons. The leading Commander, Heinrich Muller, then shouted out a command. "Fire the damn cannons!" The row of cannons then fired off their rounds at the rapidly approaching army of Titans. Many of them either missed their targets or managed to graze the Titans merely.

Heinrich's eyes opened in horror. The cannonballs didn't even phase them. One of his subordinates yelled back at him. "Sir what do we do? These cannons weren't meant for moving targets." Heinrich scrunched his eyebrows and glared at the man. "What in the hell do you think? Keep firing!" The cannons then fired off again.

Hannes was watching this from afar with a horrified look in his eyes. The cannons aren't enough. There are too many of them.

Heinrich then took a couple of steps back with fear in his eyes. We've got no choice! We have to close the gate before they get through to Wall Rose! He then shouted at the men operating the gate. "Close the gate! We can't let them get through!"

Hannes glared at the man. "You can't do that! There are still people in the Wall!"

Heinrich gave the blonde-haired man a blank stare. "We have no choice! I'm sorry!"

The men at the wall then ran to the other side and shouted, "Close the wall!" The wall then started slowly coming down. The Armored Titan then began rushing madly at the wall. Heinrich focused his gaze on him and shouted the order. "Fire!" The cannons went off again. The balls merely bounced off his armor. The Armored Titan then picked up speed. Heinrich let out a yell. "Retreat now! He's coming this way!" As the Armored Titan walked, many Garrison troops were trampled to death beneath him.

Year 845

Most of the boats were filled to capacity. The Garrison soldiers then started calling for the ramps to be pulled up. There were cries of anguish and rage as residents desperate for safety realized that they were being left behind. Some of them even pleaded with the Garrison Regiment to at least let their children on board.

One of the Garrison commanders then spoke in a calm manner. "We're sorry! There is no more room on the boats! Let's go!"

The crowd tried pushing through the Garrison soldiers, but they were pushed back. Some were even crazy enough to jump for the boats. Most managed to get a grip on the ships. Unfortunately, they lost their grip and fell in the water below. Mikasa, Shinji, and Eren and Armin all looked on the scene in shock. The boats then started on their way to Wall Rose. The Armored Titan then burst through the wall and came to a stop. Everyone stared at it with a mixture of shock and awe in its eyes.

Shinji sputtered out, "T-They've finally done it! The Titans have breached Wall Maria!" He then sat himself on the floor and cradled his knees to his chest. He then fell utterly silent.

Eren's gaze was focused on the Armored Titan. His eyes spoke of rage and pain. Angry tears were flowing out of his eyes. Mikasa gazed at him with a worried look in her eyes. She then placed a hand on his shoulder. "Eren what are you-."

The green-eyed boy shook her off. The rage within him felt so powerful that he felt his whole being was going to explode from the anger he was holding. He then pointed a finger at the Armored Titan. "The Titans! I swear on my life that I will kill every last one of them! I will be free no matter what it takes!"

Mikasa felt tears build up in her eyes. She clutched at her scarf tightly and went red in the face. Eren. I swear I will protect you even if it costs me my life! Armin just stared at his three best friends with a worried look in his eyes.

Near Wall Rose

Year 845

Grisha Yeager and Tokou Kaorosu were riding on horseback as fast as they could back to Wall Rose. They had heard of the obliteration of Shiganshina District by the Titans and were hoping that their wives and children survived the attack.

Tears ran down Grisha's eyes. Eren. Carla. Mikasa. Please be alive!

Tokou was wiping the tears from his eyes. Mikoto. Shinji. I'm coming for you both. Please hold on!

Village Center, Wall Rose

Year 845

Eren and Shinji were both turning over in their sleep and were sweating profusely. No!

Nightmarish visions flashed in their minds. Visions of needles, serums, and their fathers yelling at them. Take the serum Eren! It's for the good of humanity Shinji! You two must face your destiny! You've gone insane Dad! Mom's death has driven you mad! Shut up Eren!

Mikasa then noticed the two of them were awake. She let out a sigh of relief. They are finally awake! She then gently placed her hand on both of their shoulders. "Eren! Shinji! Wake up! We need to get moving."

Eren was then jolted awake. He was sweating profusely.

Mikasa felt a small, genuine smile grace her face. A tear fell from her eye. "Eren! You finally woke up!" He's ok. I was so worried. She then wrapped her arms around Eren and hugged him tightly. She felt her whole body tremble. "I was so worried!"

Eren just stood there stunned. Mikasa then realized how close she was to Eren. A light blush appeared on her face. What if he doesn't feel the same way? I can't handle rejection.

The raven-haired girl then shook her head. You know what? I don't care whether or not he doesn't feel the same way. He means everything to me. He could reject me to my face and I would still lay my life on the line for him. I'm going to do everything I can to show him I genuinely care about him. She then wrapped her arms around his waist and held him close. She slowly started rubbing his back. "It's alright Eren. You can let it out! I'm right here."

Eren started sobbing softly. "Did all that really happen? The wall really fell? My mother...is really gone?"

Mikasa let out a sad sigh. Eren. I'm so sorry. I wish I had done more. She stared Eren deep in his eyes. "I'm afraid so Eren."

Eren then let out a sigh and stared dejectedly at the ground. There was a coldness in his eyes. "I see then."

He then forced himself out of Mikasa's grasp and stood up. Mikasa then looked up at him with saddened eyes. "Eren what is it?"

He let out a sigh and spoke with remorse in his tone. "I know I never really show it, but you mean a lot to me Mikasa. You've always had my back. I don't really understand how I feel towards you yet. It is all a bit confusing. But I know this. You mean a lot to me.." He then shot a glance at her. "That's why I'm asking you to leave me behind. Go on and save yourself from all this madness. I tried to save my mother from those monsters and I failed. I'm joining the Scout Regiment so that I can save humanity from this mess and kill the Armored Titan." He then turned towards her with a desperate look in his teary eyes. "I am begging you. Please go far away from here! I can't risk you getting hurt or killed! You are all I have left!"

Mikasa then slowly got up off her knees. There was a hopeful smile on her face. Wow. He really does care for me. I never imagined he would actually open up to me like this. There's a fifty-fifty chance that he will or will not return my feelings. But neither of us is ready to take that step yet. We'll get there when we get there.

She then stared at Eren with a determined look in her eyes and wrapped her arms around his neck. "Stay still for a moment, will you?" I understand his reasons, but I refuse to leave his side.

Eren's eyes widened at her, "What are you doing?"

Mikasa then hugged him. Her warm embrace took Eren by surprise.

Eren felt himself go scarlet itself seemed to stop for a minute.

Mikasa then looked up at Eren with an affectionate look in her eyes and smiled warmly at him. "Eren. I understand why you want me to go. You have been through so much pain and loss. You're scared of losing the only family you have left. For the record, I don't blame you for being scared out of your mind." She then let out a sigh and half-smirked at him.

Eren stammered out, "W-Well I-"

Mikasa smiled back at him and shook her head. "That's what I thought. You are such a bonehead sometimes." She then took one of Eren's hands in hers and lightly squeezed it. There was a serious look in her eyes. "I need you to listen to me."

Eren gave her a nod.

Mikasa then cleared her throat and caressed his face in her hands. "You mean everything to me Eren. You and your family gave me a home when I had none. You taught me how to live with a purpose when you saved me from those men years ago."

Eren's eyes widened in shock. "I did? How?"

Mikasa replied, "When you tried to fight off those kidnappers years ago, you taught me to fight for my life. For that, I am indebted to you. I swear I will protect you with my life if I have to. Wherever you go, I will go with you. I make you this promise. You mother may be gone, but I am still here." She then embraced him in a hug.

Eren was stunned for a moment. "Mikasa I'm humbled. I don't know what I did to deserve your love and support. Thank you!"

He slowly raised up his arms and wrapped them around her waist. Tears began rolling down his eyes. Is this really what a hug feels like? It feels nice.

Shinji was up at this point.

Mikasa then separated herself from Eren. The green-eyed boy was still lost for words.

Mikasa then beamed at him and stated calmly, "Of course! Are you going to be ok now? I need to check up on Shinji."

Eren merely nodded at her.

Mikasa then glanced over at Shinji and ran over to him.

Eren was busy trying to recollect his thoughts at the moment. He gingerly placed a hand where she had kissed him. He went red in the face. What was that all about? What is this feeling? I felt a warm sensation come over me when she hugged and kissed me like that. It doesn't make sense.

Mikasa, meanwhile, was busy helping Shinji. She was helping him steady himself up.

Shinji let out a groan in pain as he stood himself up. "Thanks, Mikasa! I'm a little weak right now. I appreciate it."

The raven-haired girl gently put a hand on his back. She flashed him a small smile. "No problem."

Armin then peered from around the corner. There they are. He then approached the three of them with a slight grin on his face. "There you guys are."

Eren was the first to meet his eyes. He half-grinned at the blonde-haired boy. "Armin it is good to see you got you out safe."

Armin quickly glanced at Eren with a shocked expression on his face. Is he smiling at me? He's never done that before. "You as well Eren!" He then turned towards Mikasa and Shinji. "You guys alright?"

Mikasa flashed him a small smile. "We are fine Armin. It is good to see you."

Armin gave her an eager nod. He then realized that he still held the loaves of bread that he had brought for everyone. He then walked to everyone and started handing them each two loaves. "My grandfather managed to convince the Military Police that he had more kids on the ferry. So these are for you all."

Eren let out a hearty chuckle and half-grinned at Armin. "Thanks Armin! Much appreciated." He then took a small bite out of the bread in his hand. Then everything fell silent between the Shiganshina Four. The memories of the destruction of Wall Maria were still fresh within their minds.

Eren muttered to himself. Tears ran down his face—damn monsters. I'll make them pay for what we went through—all of us.

Shinji stared intently at his tightened fist. Mother. I will make them pay.

Mikasa looked at her hands for a moment. Wherever Eren goes, I will follow. I'm joining the Scouts.

Armin thought to himself. What a terrible tragedy this has been!

Then Grisha and Tokou then came out of the hiding place they were in. "Eren! Mikasa! Thank God you two are alive!" "Shinji my son! I'm so glad you are safe!"

Eren's eyes lightened up when he saw his father. There was a look of pure shock on his face. "Dad." The word sounded like it had been held back for a long time. Eren then fell to his knees and began bursting into tears.

Mikasa quickly ran to him and wrapped her arms around him. "It's alright Eren."

Grisha kneeled before his son and put his hand on his son's shoulder. "I'm sorry Eren! I should have gotten you and your mother far away from these walls! Maybe then she would still be alive! I knew the Marleyans and their Titans would breach the walls eventually. But I didn't think they would attack this soon."

Grisha felt a tear go down his eye. I failed my wife and child again—both of them.

Eren now looked upon his father with rage in his eyes. "What are you saying? That you knew this would happen?" Everyone's eyes then fell upon the elder Yeager.

Grisha let out a frustrated sigh. He pushed the rim of his glasses up to the bridge of his nose. Damn it all! I shouldn't have said that!

Eren then roughly grabbed his father by his sleeves. "Hey! Answer me damn it!"

Grisha let out a long sigh and cleared his throat. "I'm sorry Eren. I cannot say anymore at the moment."

Eren shook his head at the older man. "No, you owe me an explanation right now! What was so important of a secret that Mom had to die for it?"

Grisha shook his head sadly and stood up. Why did this have to happen now? "I need you to come with me Eren. There is something you must know."

Eren gave his father a curt nod. "Alright then!" The two Yeagers then walked off without a word.

Tokou then unwrapped his arms around Shinji and stated calmly, "I need you to come with me as well my son. There is more you need to know."

Mikasa and Armin watched the two walk away with worried eyes. Eren. Shinji. Please be careful!

Somewhere in the forests near Wall Rose

Year 845

Shinji, Tokou, Grisha and Eren were walking through the forest. They finally came to a stop.

Grisha let out a sigh, pulled out the golden syringe out of his jacket and turned around. "Eren I am sorry I have to do this. I hope you will forgive me one day." He then took the key necklace around his neck and put it around his son's.

Eren quickly raised an eyebrow at his father. Before Eren could react, Grisha promptly injected him with the Titan formula.

Tokou then snuck up from behind his son and injected him with the Jagged Titan. He scowled at his father. "What the fuck are you doing?"

Tokou spoke, his tone brimming with regret, "I'm sorry my boy. You needed this injection in order to complete your transformation into the Jagged Titan. I had no other choice!"

Eren violently pushed his father away and cursed at him. "What the hell are you doing?"

Grisha had a cold expression on his face. "I'm doing what I have to in order to save humanity. You must carry on the powers of the Command Titan and lead the Eldian people to true freedom. You and Shinji must venture down to the cellar. There you will find the answers you truly seek. Remember that the fate of every Eldian alive rests with you and Shinji. You two must return our people home. No matter the cost."

Eren still had a hand on where Grisha had injected him and glared at him. What the hell is he talking about? Static electricity fields suddenly overcame the young boys. This caused amassivee explosion that enveloped a large part of the forest. They both let out a howls of pain. They sounded almost animalistic in nature.

Shinji was currently undergoing his own transformation. What the hell is happening to me! I'm becoming some sort of beast. Soon both boys that fully transformed into first stage forms of both the Command and Jagged Titan. The only difference between the two was that the Jagged Titan was able to break off armored spikes and throw them at his enemies. The two Titans then threw their heads back and let out ear piercing roars. The roars were so loud and powerful that Grisha and Tokou had to use all their strength to stay on their feet.

The tall man and his longtime partner looked on with a mixture of sadness and regret.

Tokou let out a rueful sigh. "To imagine I'd have to sacrifice my only son to save humanity. I hope he forgives me some day." He then felt a hand on his shoulder.

Grisha spoke in a nonchalant tone, "You know as well as I do old friend. This was what needed to be done." He let out a sigh. Forgive me Eren.

Tokou could give Grisha a nod.

The Command and Jagged Titan then noticed the two men. The Jagged one picked Tokou up with one hand. The Command Titan picked up Grisha with his own.

The two men had almost resigned looks on their faces. It was as if they had accepted their fate.

The two Titans then leaned towards them and feasted on them. Grisha's glasses fell on the grass below. A bit of his blood fell on them.

Somewhere in the forests around Wall Rose

Five hours later

Mikasa and Armin had been waiting for Shinji and Eren to return for five hours. The two friends had tried to convince themselves that they had no place getting involved in what they considered personal business. But, the two boys and their fathers still hadn't returned to them. The ferry was sounding its last call for refugees to move further into the wall. The raven-haired girl and blonde-haired boy couldn't bear to leave their family behind. The four of them all shared a bond. They were the Shiganshina Four. They had survived the destruction of Shiganshina District together. And they were going to be leaving together. They had managed to secure the assistance of two MPs who were willing to lend a hand. Mikasa and Armin then rode with the two MPs on horseback.

As the four of them were approaching the forest, Mikasa pointed towards the trees. "Armin and I saw them go into that forest. We should head in there."

The MP guiding the horse glanced back at her and nodded dutifully. He and the other MP then rode into the forest.

Abandoned Forest, near Wall Rose

Fifteen minutes later

The four of them didn't take long to find Eren and Shinji. However, nothing could have prepared them for what they had seen. There were two Titan carcasses that had nothing but bone left on them. Smoke and steam were trailing off them. Eren and Shinji were on their knees. There were blank expressions on their faces. They were just starting at the ground. Eren was holding his father's bloodied glasses in his hand.

The lead MP guiding the group felt his jaw drop. He suddenly pulled his horse to a sudden halt. What the fuck happened here?

Mikasa immediately spotted Eren. Her eyes widened in horror. Oh no! Eren! She immediately jumped off the horse and ran full speed towards him. "Eren!"

Eren didn't look up to meet her gaze. Did that really happen?

She practically enveloped him in a bone crushing hug and lifted him off the ground. Mikasa then held him close to her. Small sobs were escaping her lips. He's alive! Thank God he's alive! I don't know what I'd do if I lost him.

Eren then started softly sobbing. His whole body was shaking. Mikasa then placed a hand on his back and gently rubbed it. "There there. Everything is ok now. I will protect you. I will always protect you!"

Armin, meanwhile, had his hand on Shinji's shoulder. The amber-skinned boy was muttering to himself. I hate you Dad. I hate you so goddamn much. His fists were tightened so hard the knuckles were turning pure white.

"Shinji are you ok?" Shinji recognized Armin's voice and gazed up at him with tear-stained eyes. "Armin is that you?" Armin smiled warmly at his adoptive brother. "Yeah it's me."

Shinji then lost all control and wrapped himself around the blonde-haired boy. He was wailing as well.

Armin had a scared look on his face. Oh crap! He's crying! What do I do? His hands then got all shaky. I can ruffle his hair a bit. Grandfather used to comfort me that way. He slowly put a hand on his friend's head and gently ruffled his hair. "It's alright now. You are safe and sound. Just relax for now."

Shinji immediately felt himself calming down. His wails immediately toned down to tiny shivers. Why?

Somewhere on the Transports.

Shinji, Eren, Mikasa, and Armin were all sitting on the transports, waiting to go into Wall Rose.

Eren looked at his hands and tightened a fist. There was a hint of untethered aggression in his words. "I've decided. I'm going to join the Cadets next year. I'm going to learn to be stronger. I'm going to learn to fight back."

Mikasa nodded sadly. There is no changing his mind on this. At least I will be there to protect him.

Armin let out a sigh. "I'm coming with you." Eren gazed at him absolutely flabbergasted. "Y-You can't be serious, Armin." Armin then turned towards him with a serious look in his eyes. "I do!" Eren shivered uncomfortably. Mikasa then stood up as well. "I'm coming along as well." Eren stared at her with a horrified expression on his face. " Please don't! There's no reason to follow me to my death!" Mikasa then kneeled down and caressed his face with her hand. Her cheeks reddened. "Yeah. And if I can help it, then it won't be your death. I won't let anything happen to you. I swear it." Shinji merely took a deep breath and sighed. I need to ensure Eren gains the power of the Command Titan. That is the only way the Eldian people will be free. To do that, I have to keep him alive at all costs. "I'm joining in as well! I lost my family to these monsters! It's time for payback! Eren looked at all three of them and nodded. That settles it then. He then gently pried Mikasa's hand and stood up. He then punched out a fist. "Together then." All three of them gave him a nod and connected fists.

Trost District, Wall Rose

Weeks later

Year 854

The news of the collapse of Wall Maria and destruction of Shinganshina District spread like wildfire inside the walls. The Southern Lords were busy mulling over the event themselves. Gregorio Shimono then spoke, "Are we sure Shinganshina has truly fallen? That town has held for a century. It all makes no sense!"

Valis Valerno crossed his arms and snorted loudly. " It doesn't matter whether you believe it or not. Reports are already coming in that refugees from Maria are flooding into Wall Rose like plague rats. The estimate is about five hundred of them survived."

Cletus Romanus then let out a sigh and put his hands together. "The true question we need to ask ourselves is whether or not we are prepared to take on the Titans. If the Regiment at Maria couldn't beat them, then what chance do we have?"
