Chapter I: The Beginning of the 104th Cadet Corps Boot Camp

Part I: Enter the Commander

104th Cadet Corps Boot Camp, Wall Rose

Two years later,

Commandant Keith Shadis began barking orders. "Alright, you maggots! Welcome to the 104th Cadet Corps Boot Camp! Allow me to introduce myself! My name is Commandant Keith Sadies!"

The air soon became thick with tension. "Training here is going to feel like you are riding through hell! You will grow to hate me! But if I have done my job, you will wake up in the cold dead of night with memories of this place!"

Commandant Shadis then glared at each one of the new promising soldiers. "Right now, you are nothing! But over the next three soul-crushing years, you'll learn to take down your own Titan! You will either grow to become a fighter or become fed!"

Eren stared the man down with a rather intense look in his eyes. Oh. I'm a fighter, all right! And when I'm done here, the Titans will grow to hate me!

Commander Shadis then glared at Armin, "Hey, Mop Top!" Here we go.

Armin began shivering in his skin a bit. He then saluted. "Sir, yes, sir!"

Commandant Shadis then leaned in on him. "What do they call you maggot?"

Armin replied. "Armin Artlert from Shinganshina District, sir!"

Commandant Shadis's expression didn't change. "Why in the hell would your parents give you such a dumb name?"

Armin stiffened, "It was my late grandfather's name, sir!"

Commandant Shadis gave the blonde boy a nod. "Why are you here runt?"

Armin shouted, "I'm here to help humanity overcome the Titans!"

Commandant Shadis then leaned in. "Great! You'll be a great light snack for them!"

He then grabbed the blonde roughly by the hair and turned him around the other way. "Row Three! About Face runt!"

His eyes then fixated on Thomas Wagner. "And what about you?" Thomas then saluted.

"Thomas Wagner from Trost District, sir!"

Commandant Shadis then shouted in the man's face. "I can't hear you!"

From afar, two men were watching the Commandant at work. One was aged, wore rimmed glasses, and had gray hair. He smiled at the Commandant from afar. "Look at him go! That man is a master when it comes to molding fresh-faced recruits!"

Commandant Shadis was busy yelling into the face of a female recruit. "Are you the best that Karaness has to offer?"

She replied, frightened out of her mind, "Sir! I'm afraid that's the case, sir!"

The other instructor looked at his colleague. "Why is he so tough with them?"

The older man grinned at his comrade through his glasses. "It is part of our Rite of Passage. We break them into blank slates and build them into the soldiers they need to be!"

The younger man merely nodded. "Yeah, I remember those days." He then realized that the Commandant was skipping over some of the candidates. "I notice he is skipping over some of the candidates."

The older gray-haired man let out a sigh. "Those recruits are from the Shinganshina District. Nothing he could say could scare them. They've seen the horrors of the Titans for themselves. You can see it in their faces." He then motioned for the younger man to follow him. "Come on. There's nothing more to see here."

The younger blonde nodded and followed him.

Commandant Shadis then focused his gaze on Jean. "What do we have over here?"

The man gulped and saluted. "Jean Kirchstein." "From the Trost District." "Why are you here, cadet?"

Jean grinned at the man smugly. "To join the Military Police, sir! The best of the best!"

Eren cast a scowl at the man. Coward.

Commandant Shadis then evilly grinned at the man. "Oh, so you want to live in the Interior?"

Jean's grin grew even wider. "Yes!"

Commandant Shadis then headbutted the man hard. He immediately fell to his knees and gripped the sides of his head. He then barked at him. "I did not tell you to sit recruit! If you can't handle this, Kirchstein! You can forget about joining the Military Police!"

Marco couldn't stop from grinning at the man.

Commandant Shadis caught wind of this and got in his face. "Why the hell are you smiling, recruit?"

Marco immediately saluted. "Marco Bodt from Jinae, sir! South Side of Wall Rose! I aim to join the Military Police and give life and service to the King!"

Commandant Shadis half-grinned at the man. "Is that so?" He then stared the man intently in his eyes. "So you are a gullible fool and a rube? Do you think the king values your life? You will prove to be nothing more than cannon fodder to him."

Marco felt himself start to shiver with fear.

Commander Shadis then switched his gaze to Conny. "Hey, cue ball! You're up next!" Conny Springer then stammered out, "O-Oh me? Conny Springer from Ragako Village sir!" He then saluted on the wrong side.

Commandant Shadis then grabbed and lifted him by the sides of his head. "You have it backward, Conny Springer. The salute shows how much we dedicate ourselves to the cause! Is that where your heart is?!"

A loud noise then interrupted the two men.

Commandant Shadis then turned his eyes towards the young ponytailed girl and approached her.

Everyone stared at the girl with apprehension in their eyes. "You are officially on my shit list! Just who the hell are you?"

Sasha immediately took another bite and nervously smiled. "Sasha Braus from Dauper Village sir!" She then saluted with the bread still in her hand. "Reporting for duty, sir!"

Commander Shadis growled menacingly, "Sasha Braus, huh? And what exactly is that thing you are holding in your hand?" "A steamed potato, sir! It looked lonely in the mess hall, so I decided to give it a home in my stomach, sir!"

Everyone then looked at her as if she was insane.

Stealing food.

Is she crazy?

She is dead! Dead!

Commandant Shadis took a deep breath and nodded. "Thievery. I understand. But why eat it here and now?

Sasha let out a gulp. "It was getting cold in my uniform, sir!" Then, an idea came into her head. She broke the bread into two pieces and extended a piece towards the man. "Here. You can have half, sir." She then gave him a nervous smile. I hope he doesn't kill me.

Commander Shadis took it from her and examined it thoroughly. "Half, huh?" He then glared at her. "Alright then. Since you got an early meal, I'm revoking your meal privileges unless you run around until the sun sets."

Sasha sweatdropped for a moment and nodded with a nervous salute. "Yes, sir!" No bread until I run. I..I can do this.

Commander Shadis then turned to the rest of them. "The rest of you! You are to come to my office for your assigned bunks. Is that clear?"

Everyone gave him a salute. "Yes, sir!"

Bunk 41

104th Cadet Corps, Wall Rose

Two hours later.

Eren, Armin, and their three bunkmates were standing outside their bunk. They were watching as Sasha was going about her run.

One of them, a young raven-haired boy, commented, "Man, I thought Shadis was going to kill Potato Girl."

Conny nodded, "Yeah. What a hell of a first day."

Eren nodded in agreement. "It's funny. Being told to run until the sun sets didn't demoralize her. I admire her grit and determination."

Conny nodded. "I think she said she was from Dauper. If I remember correctly, that is a small hunting village up in the mountains." He then noticed the caravan of dropouts. "Hey, what's that?"

The girl replied, "Dropouts. They decided to work out in the fields instead of fight."

Armin stammered out, "B-But it's only the first day." Eren shook his head and sighed. "That's the way it is. If you can't handle the pressure, you gotta leave. Part of me can't blame them."

The raven-haired boy then looked at him. "I know about some of us, but you never mentioned where you were from Eren."

Eren then grinned at the boy and put an arm around Armin. "Armin and I are from Shiganshina." The boy let out a gasp. They were there. That means they saw the Titans in person.

Conny grinned at Eren. He had an excitable expression on his face. "Does that mean you saw him? The Colossal Titan?"

Eren's expression immediately soured. He stared dejectedly at the floor and nodded. "Yes. Excuse me for a minute." He then walked back into the bunk.

The girl lightly smacked Conny on the shoulder and glared at him. "You idiot! You can't just blurt it out like that! He probably has a lot of trauma."

Conny immediately stammered out, "Y-Yeah. I didn't think that through." Armin sighed. "Yeah, we saw him. He was huge. He was all muscle and flesh. Excuse me a moment. I'm going to go check up on Eren." He then walked into the bunk.

Eren was sitting on his bunk with his hands around his knees. He was crying.

Armin immediately hugged him. "It's all right. Everything will be alright, Eren." Eren didn't respond. He just kept staring at the ground.

Barracks, 104th Cadet Corps

Four hours later

Eren, Shinji, Mikasa, and Armin all decided to sit at the same table. They didn't trust anyone else in the unit.

Eren had his head buried in his green hood.

Mikasa was tenderly caressing one of his hands with a concerned look on her face. "Oh, Eren. I wish there were something I could do to help ease the pain. It breaks my heart to see you like this."

Shinji and Armin just looked on and sighed.

Armin looked on with sympathy in his eyes. I miss my grandfather so much.

Shinji took a deep breath and put a hand on Eren's shoulder. I can't blame Eren. I miss my parents all the time. It's hard. "You want to talk about it, Eren? We're here for you."

Eren let out a sigh and raised his head. "One of my bunkmates asked about the Colossal Titan. I tried to talk about it, but it was just too painful."

Mikasa gazed at him with softened eyes. One of her hands tightened into a fist as she gritted her teeth. They did what? I swear that I will make them pay. "You don't owe them anything, Eren. None of us do."

Eren groaned. "I know Mikasa. I-I just-"

A loud noise then interrupted the four of them.

They all looked up to see Jean and three other cadets looking at them strangely.

Shinji glared at Jean. He let out a frustrated grunt. "May we help you with something?"

Jean half-grinned at him. "Yeah, we wanted to chat with Eren Jaeger."

Eren then turned his head to look at Jean. There was a tired yet irritated look in his eyes. He then rose from his seat, walked over, and glared at the man. "What do you want with me?"

Jean let out a chuckle. "My father knew your father. He wanted me to give you something."

Eren crossed his arms at him and shrugged, "Go ahead. I'm all ears."

Jean nodded. "All right then." He then punched him hard in the face. This drew a bit of blood.

Eren staggered back a bit.

Jean then kneeled him in the gut.

Eren crumbled to the floor.

Jean then walked over and started stomping on his knee.

Eren began letting out cries of pain.

Mikasa's eyes went wide in horror. Eren! She glared at Jean. Her eyes were full of rage as she forced herself in between the two men. "Hey! Stay away from him!"

She then hit Jean out with one punch. He crashed hard facefirst to the floor.

She took a deep breath and immediately ran to Eren to help him reach his feet. "Eren! Are you okay?"

Eren didn't notice her at all. He glared up at Jean. "W-What the hell is your problem?"

Jean glared back at him. "My father was one of the best doctors in Wall Rose. My family and I were taken care of. Then your father came into town and stole all our business! That was retribution!"

Eren wiped the blood from his mouth. "That's what this bullshit is about? My family is dead, you asshole! Your family probably is, too! What does any of it matter now?"

Jean, being helped by his friends, "It matters to me! I will prove to everyone here that I'm better than you, Jeager!"

Eren shook his head. "You are an idiot! How are we supposed to fight the Titans if we fight amongst ourselves?"

Jean spit at him. "Consider yourself warned Jeager. I'm watching you."

Shinji stormed up to him and grabbed him, lifting him by the shirt. "How about a little present? Stay away from Eren! This is your only warning!" He then kneeled Jean in the groin and tossed him out of the barracks.

Annie, who was walking into the barracks, blinked as Jean fell in front of her, "Oh my!"

Jean's friends managed to help him up to his feet as they dragged him away. He pointed dangerously at Eren. "This is not over, Eren! It isn't over by a long shot!" He and his friends then stumbled off to their bunk.

Eren then felt a twinge of pain. He fell to one knee again.

Mikasa gazed at him with a worried look. "Hey, take it easy, okay? We'll take you back to the bunk."

Eren nodded weakly at her. "Thank you."

Mikasa smiled back at him. Her face reddened a bit. "Of course. Happy to help." She then glanced at Armin. "Armin, help me walk him to the bunk."

Armin stammered out, "O-Of course, Mikasa."

Shinji nodded at all three of them. "I'll lead on ahead."

All three of them gave him a nod.

Annie was watching from afar. She was gazing at Shinji with a surprised look on her face. Her face reddened. Heh. He knows his way around a brawl. That's kind of attractive. I like a strong man. She then sat her tray on an empty table and began eating quietly.

Somewhere near Bunk 40, 104th Cadet Corps

Two hours later

Sasha had finally finished her run. She was painting and sweating all over. Finally,...done. She then collapsed on her face.

Suddenly, a smell drew her attention. Bread. Bread. She immediately ran to the source and grabbed the bread from Krista's hand. She immediately started munching on it. She looked down at it. "This is bread!"

Krista nervously smiled at her. "Yes. I-I'm sorry I don't have more. That was all I could smuggle."

Sasha ran up to her and put her hands on her shoulders." There was a crazed look in her eyes. You are a goddess! Thank you!"

Krista beamed at her. She then pulled out her water flask. "Here, drink some water too."

Sasha graciously took it and began downing it.

Ymir walked out of the bunk and crossed her arms at the two girls. She turned red as her eyes fell on Krista with a growl, "Krista! What are you doing out here so late?"

Krista nervously smiled at her. "Ah, H-Hi Ymir. Sasha had finished her run finally. She was so hungry and thirsty. I thought I would give her some of my food and water.

Ymir only shook her head. "I see. So you're trying to be nice?"

Krista stammered, "Y-Yes uh-"

Sasha had finally downed the whole canteen.

She let out a sigh of exhaustion and collapsed in Krista's lap.

Ymir sighed and continued. "What's the point of breaking the rules for Potato Girl? That act of kindness won't get you anywhere. I keep telling you that you are too selfless sometimes."

Krista just stared at Ymir in shock. "I-I was-"

Ymir let out a frustrated sigh and looked away. "Whatever. Let's get her to bed already." She then picked up Sasha and slung her over her shoulder.

Krista stared at her, confused. "I'm confused. Are you being nice?"

Ymir sighed. "I'm helping her so she can help me sometime in the future." She then walked off to the bunk.

Krista followed, smiling warmly at her. What do you know? Ymir can be a nice person.
