The NCO was a veteran of both the Cardassian war and Dominion war, the man had been teaching thirty years at Starfleet Acadamy and made his way to head of the Operations department while still teaching his classes, meaningless to say Steven was intimidated. He knocked on his door and he heard the friendly but gruff Irish voice say "Come in please" Steven then opened the office door to see the silver-haired O'Brien looking away from him onto a view screen which had a Ferengi man in Starfleet Captain's uniform "Yes Captain Nog, I'll talk to you later" Nog replied "I will talk to you later Chief" O'Brien replied "People need to stop doing that I'm not in Starfleet anymore, anyway I'll see you later Nog I got a student who wants to see me" The call then ended and as he started turning around in his chair "So cadet Stevenson, you said you wanted to t..." As soon as he faced Steven, O'Brien's face turned to one of shock and confusion "Oh umm have a seat cadet"

Steven sat and said, "It is a pleasure to meet you, sir, I have read so much about you my mother always talked about the time she met you" This seemed to pique his interest "Oh really what is your mother's name?" Steven replied, "Lieutenant Commander K' Lara, she served on the USS Heisenberg" The seventy-five-year-old man searched his brain and said "Oh yes, a Vulcan, she was a Lieutenant back then she kept asking me questions about fluctuations in quantum relays. Stevenson? Wait is your father important?" Steven nodded "Yeah, my father is the Federation ambassador to the Dominion" It was then that everything made sense to Miles "Oh yes, you are the child, the one Nerys mentioned" Steven looked confused O'Brien not wanting to mess with things he shouldn't be messing with "How is your mother now?" Steven looked down hiding his eyes and his ears slightly "Mom is dead, she died about a year ago" O'Brien looked consolatory "Oh I am sorry Steven, I did not mean to bring it up" "It is ok, she lived a good life even if it wasn't as long as it should have been"

O'Brien sighed "So um, you want to be an engineer huh?" Steven nodded "Yes sir" "Good, the engineering core is the backbone of Starfleet, we need more good engineers, my daughter Molly graduated in 95, and she is a member of Enterprise G's engineering team" He turned behind him to pick something off his bookshelf "I know you will get textbooks issues when you get to class but since are already in my Engineering 101 class I will give yours right now" he turned around and handed Steven a physical textbook "Normally we only give digital copies on a textbook but our superintendent has insisted on having a few physical copies on hand, it is yours to keep of course" "Thank you sir" He looked down at the book, the title read "The Principals of Basic Star Ship engineering" by Paul Stamats. Steven looked puzzled "Who is Paul Stamats?" "A little-known Starfleet engineer who served in the Klingon War not much is known about him, a lot of his record is redacted and one day he just disappeared" "This book is over 150 years old, can't be up to date" O'Brien relaxed in his chair "When it comes to the basics of engineering not much has changed in the engineering field, it's like math" He then held out his hand and Steven shook it "Alright young man I'll see you in class Monday"

"Hmm, young man I am quite pleased you have decided to get your medical checkup sooner than later" "Yeah doctor I think it is best to get it over with" The figure of the holographic EMH only known as "The Doctor" loomed over steven scanned Steven as he checked the pad for Steven's medical records "So Doctor, you were on Voyager right?" The Doctor nodded "That's right seven years in the Delta quadrant" "How do you feel about that new slipstream corridor that just opened through the Gamma quadrant connecting the Alpha and Delta quadrant?" The Doctor smiled "I Think it's great, now we will get all kinds of visitors from the Delta Quadrant I may run into some old faces from my Delta Quadrant days" He then looked a bit concerned "I am worried about your eyes, from your medical records it says you have poor eyesight" He nodded "Yeah my species doesn't have very good eyesight I have contact lenses to help " "I see have you ever considered corrective eye surgery?" Steven thought "I never thought about it before" "Well like all kinds of surgeries there are risks but it's always an option instead of wearing contact lenses, in any case, it would be wise to update your contacts" Steven nodded and took out his lenses and the doctor scanned them to measure his visual acuity. "Ok I see hmmm" Steven looked a bit worried "What what is it?" "Well, Mr. Stevenson it seems that your eyesight has gotten a bit since your last visit" Steven "How?" "Well, it is only natural as you get older your eyesight will get worse" Steven looked worried "I'm only 18 my eyesight can't be getting worse already" "Well we don't know how long your species lives for it is a whole test case for the Federation, you are making history" Steven sighed "Sometimes I really would rather not be making history, so when can I pick up my new contacts?" The Doctor gestured "Well they should be done by tomorrow come up and pick them up tomorrow, the door is always open" Steven slid off the biobed "Thanks Doc'll come tomorrow"
