Chapter 4: The Quiet Rebellion

The blood had long dried on the marble floor.

Hilary sat curled in the farthest corner of the room, her arms wrapped around her knees, her breath shallow and quiet. The body was gone—Kai had cleaned up everything like it had never happened. But she couldn't unsee it. She couldn't unhear the final breath that man had taken when Kai's hands crushed his throat like it was nothing.

The room was colder now. Not physically. But something had shifted.

She hadn't spoken in two days. Not since the murder.

Kai was pretending everything was normal—like they were just a newly married couple navigating life. He brought her food. He sat beside her sometimes. He stroked her hair, murmured how much he loved her. And she sat there, paralyzed. Knowing any wrong move might make her the next victim.

But today… something was different.

The phone rang in another room.

Kai stood from the couch, gave her a lingering look—like a warning—and walked away to answer it.

Hilary counted his footsteps. One… two… seven… ten…

A door closed.

She waited. Her heart pounded so loudly she feared it might give her away. She stood. Her legs trembled, but they moved.

She tiptoed down the hallway, past the blood-soaked memory, past the picture-perfect wedding photo on the wall where Kai was smiling and she was barely holding back her tears.

The front door had three locks.

She started with the bottom one—quietly, carefully. It clicked open.

Second one.

Then—her hand froze.

The third lock had a code.

She didn't know the code.

No. No no no no—

She backed away, her chest heaving. Her eyes scanned the hallway—then she saw it.

Kai's phone.

He'd left it on the kitchen counter.

A miracle.

She snatched it up, fingers trembling. She didn't know the passcode. But she remembered something.

His birthday.

0-6-0-4.

The screen lit up.

Unlocked.

She opened the Messages app.

"HELP ME."

She didn't even know who to send it to. She scrolled—most numbers were unknown or business contacts. Then—she saw a name.

Max Tate.

She remembered Max. A friend from the old days. Someone she hadn't seen in years.

She typed fast.

"Max. It's Hilary. I'm in trouble. Kai… he's not who you think he is. Please. Help me. I don't know how long I have."

Send.

Just as the message went through—she heard it.

Footsteps. Behind her.

She turned.

Kai stood at the end of the hallway, holding the phone he had gone to answer.

Eyes locked on her.

He looked at the phone in her hand.

Then at her.

The silence was louder than any scream.

He stepped forward.

Slow.

Deliberate.

"You tried to leave me," he whispered, voice calm. Too calm.

Hilary backed away, heart slamming against her ribs.

"Kai, I—I was scared… I didn't mean to—"

"You don't lie to me, Hilary."

He reached into his coat pocket.

Pulled out something small. Sharp. Silver.

A scalpel.

Not a knife.

A surgeon's tool.

He smiled.

"Let's fix that fear of yours."
