Chapter 1: Chapter 1

Chapter Text

Anthony didn't know when his friendship started with Penelope. Well that's not exactly true. It started with the fact that he loved his mother and would do whatever he was told. Well most of the time.

"You must dance with at least one woman tonight, Anthony. You may choose who but you must dance with an eligible lady. Do you understand?" Violet said with all the authority that she had as his mother.

"Who would you suggest mother? If I dance with Miss Cowper I will surely hurt her feelings. When she realizes it means nothing." Anthony was being impertinent but he was frankly pissed at Simon for daring to look at his sister.

"Perhaps Miss Featherington?" Violet suggested.

Anthony choked on his drink, "Are you mad?! You want me to dance with one of those…. Those….. well I can't say it in polite company but mother really?"

"Penelope" was Violet's response "she has not danced all evening and Miss Cowper looks about ready to spill her drink on Miss Featherington again." Violet reasoned.

"Women do that?" Anthony asked, truly astonished that anyone could be mean to Penelope Featherington. That woman is a Saint dealing with a mother like hers.

"Yes they do. Cressida spilled her drink down Penelope's front at the last ball while they were talking to Colin." At this Anthony's eyes were large. He couldn't believe this. "It was fairly obvious and your brother removed Penelope from the situation with a dance." Violet said eyeing him.

"Well then I most certainly cannot have the third son be more honorable than me." Anthony nodded his head to his mother and hurried off to Penelope stopping at Benedict.

"Go dance with your sister." At Benedict argument he simply stated "Just get her away from Hastings."

As Anthony approached Penelope he could see Cressida Cowper already talking to her. He would need to be speedy.

"You're just a fat useless insipid wallflower. That's all you'll ever be." Cressida could be heard saying.

Oh well that was enough. How dare that…. That….. well that BITCH say such things about Penelope. He didn't know much about her but he did know that she was dear to many of his siblings which means her character is worthy.

"Miss Featherington? Might I have this dance?" Anthony ask her. He ignored everyone else and was solely focused on her.

Penelope looked liked she wanted to refuse. He just raised his eyebrows as if challenging her to say no. "Y-yes of course."

With that Penelope grabbed his hand and they were off. Now that he was dancing with Penelope he could look for Daphne.

"Lord Bridgerton can I ask what are you looking for? Or whom?" Penelope asked quite suddenly. Before he could answer she stated, "if it is Daphne do not worry she is just over there dancing with Benedict."

With that Anthony looked at where she was gesturing. Sigh Daphne was safe at least.

"Though I do wonder why are you trying to force her union to Berbroke when he is such a terrible man?" Penelope asked, it was that moment where she realized what she said and to whom. "I-I am sorry my lord I did not mean to be so frank."

"Why are you still calling me that Penelope?"

"That's your name. I always call you that or Viscount Bridgerton." Penelope answered as if it was the most simple thing in the world.

"Penelope you've slept at my house and broken fast with me and my family in night clothes. I think as friends you can call me Anthony." Penelope blushed at the mention of her in nightclothes.

"We are friends?" Penelope asked shyly.

"Well- well yes I would say so. I know you are closer to Eloise and Colin but I think of you as a friend."

"Then as a friend can I be direct?" She waited for his response, he nodded. "Berbroke is a terrible man. Please let me finish. He tried to take liberties with Daphne at the last ball. She punched him before he could do much that was when the Duke arrived and they came to dance."

"Wh-what?" Anthony was in shock. And deeply concerned for his sister. "Surely she would have told me?"

"Anthony from my understanding you've given her no choice to either explore options or speak frankly with you. I only know because I happened to see. They don't even know I saw. I didn't tell Daph. It's a scary reality we women face." Penelope felt like she was rambling but she was on a roll. "Furthermore; his character is questionable at best. He fired a maid suddenly 6 months ago and curiously she bore a son just this week. Why might that be?" She finally stopped and allowed Anthony the chance to be shocked.

"How do you know this? I looked into him. He's a good man." Anthony realized the whole ton had vastly underestimated Penelope Featherington.

"Wallflower. People talk, especially servants when they don't see you." Penelope explained. "Your sources are also all men. Men don't tend to care about women's needs nevermind the ones they find disposable. Mayhaps a certain Soprano comes to mind?"

Anthony gasped. It was one thing for his mother to know it was entirely different when it was a random woman of the ton.

"I'm sorry I should not have- that is I should not have implied that you were anything like him Lord Bridgerton."

Anthony realized that the music stopped. "Please Penelope, will you take a turn about the room with me? I would be delighted to continue this conversation."

"Oh! Well yes of course." Penelope was quite shocked.

"What do you know about the soprano as you call her?" Anthony asked, concerned with what this innocent young woman may know about things she frankly should not know.

"Well," Penelope paused looking to see if anyone was too near she lowered her voice, "I know you have relations with her. And she is friends with the modiste but past that not much else."

Anthony sighed. That God that this Lady doesn't have more of a carnal knowledge. "How do you know that?"

"Oh Lord Bridgerton," Penelope chuckled. "Wallflower, remember?"

"Well then perhaps I should get you away from the wall more often. You know far more than you should." Anthony gave her an assessing look. "Now where shall I deliver you? I believe I need to free my sister from a situation I may have caused."

"Quite. We can stop here is fine. Thank you for the dance Anthony. Even though I know you only danced with me at your mother's request."

"Yes, I did enjoy myself. Thank you Penelope." With that Anthony bowed and left to find his sister and then Mr. Berbroke.

Chapter Text

It wasn't until the picnic that Anthony saw Penelope again. This situation was a little more heated.

"I have received a special license. We shall be Wed. Lest the whole ton hear rumors." Berbroke could be heard saying.

"Mr. Berbroke," Penelope spoke up. Being unnoticed she startled a few people. "Perhaps the ton should hear gossip. Perhaps the gossip should be about a maid who recently left your employ? What was her name again Lord Bridgerton?" Penelope had many stares none more heated than Anthony. This woman was publicly protecting his family.

"Maria I believe. Her son is named George after the king of course." Anthony moved his eyes to Berbroke. "So sad about his father though. He is the most dishonorable man I've had the displeasure to be acquainted with."

"Listen here bitch. No one would believe you." Berbroke got in Penelope's face. At this Anthony reacted. He grabbed Berbroke by the collar.

"But they will believe me. And Miss Featherington is anything but what you called her." At this Anthony's hand closed around his throat. His brothers and Simon made a wall to stop the nosy people. "I believe you owe Miss Featherington and my sister an apology. And then perhaps you take an early country trip. Understand?"

Berbroke gasped but nodded to the best of his ability. Anthony released him.

"I beg your pardon Miss Featherington, Miss Bridgerton." He just nodded and ran.

"Does anyone have a match? Perhaps it's best we burn it?" Penelope said no lack of humor in her voice.

"Well that was entertaining." Penelope stated making her leave. "Good day Bridgertons, your Grace." Penelope made to leave.

"Penelope," Anthony spoke before she could leave. "Perhaps a promenade?" Everyone was a little shocked, no one more than Penelope.

"C-certainly, Lord Bridgerton."

"I thought we were past that?" Anthony chuckled, forgetting even where he was. Lady Bridgerton stared at her son like she had seen the light. No one noticed the glare that Colin was throwing his way. Nor the shock on Eloise's face.

"Perhaps we could join you? Chaperone each other?" Daphne asked, obviously quite overwhelmed.

"Oh certainly Daphne, Your Grace."

"Well then shall we? Anthony was obviously ready to leave from embarrassment if nothing else.

"Penelope," Daphne started, tears in her eyes.

"Daphne there's no need for your tears. He's dealt with yes?" Penelope said, comforting the woman who was more like a sister than her own.

"Yes but because of you." Daphne said, voice breaking. "I don't believe there is anything I can do to repay you. Do you want to marry one of my brothers? I'll find a way to make it happen." Penelope choked on a laugh.

If Daphne would have asked her that a year ago she would have immediately said yes. And everyone knows she would have asked for Colin a year ago. Penelope had become jaded to the fanciful ideas of love at first sight and falling for your best friend. Watching these men and women lie all season to find a life partner and then seeing Colin trail after her cousin had kind of put a damper on the art of husband hunting for Penelope.

"I don't think that is necessary. Although the offer is appreciated. I did what I could. I would hope that if I were in a similar situation you would do the same. Us women have to look out for each other." Penelope said decisively.

"Yes but there must be something my family can give you." Anthony spoke up from behind them, startling Penelope and Daphne. "I don't agree with my sister trying to marry my brothers and I off but there must be something." Anthony offered his arm while Simon did the same to Daphne.

"I cannot think of anything. I just did what was right." Penelope said, taking his arm.

"That was more than the right thing. That was protecting my family. From a man that sadly I could not protect her from." Anthony was looking at her differently. Not that she noticed as her head was down as it so often is. "No worries though. I'm sure my mother and I will come up with something."

"That's not necessary my Lord." That earned Penelope a look.

"It truly is. We owe you a great debt." Anthony said with a sense of finality. There was to be no arguing with him.

Neither noticed all eyes on them or if they did they just assumed it was the Duke and Daphne they were staring at.

"Here you are Miss Featherington." Anthony spoke seriously. "Thank you for the wonderful conversation."

"Anytime, Lord Bridgerton." Penelope said with a smile.

Notes:

As always comments and kudos are my livelihood.

Chapter 3: Chapter 3

Summary:

How do we let Penelope know the Bridgertons appreciate her.

Notes:

I'm thinking of finishing this at season 1. And then making a series. Any names for a series?

Also note that things with Daphne and Simon are not so dramatic. So things like fake dating isn't really what's happening. More like friends to lovers because they were great friends first.

Chapter Text

Anthony was stepping into the carriage with his mother and sisters. He couldn't help but think that Penelope would be a lovely addition in this carriage, by his side.

"So what are we going to do for Penelope?" Daphne asked. "Honestly I'm willing to name my first born after her." They all chuckled but Daphne was serious she would absolutely name a child after Penelope if she asked it.

"I do not believe that is necessary. I think something a little more subtle." Anthony could only think about Penelope in Bridgerton blue. He couldn't help that his thoughts were filled with her. She looked incredibly attractive defending Daphne, setting that stupid license on fire, and then willing to walk away. She was truly incredible.

"What were you thinking Anthony?" His mother gave him a knowing look. Christ could she read his mind.

"I was thinking perhaps a new dress. She does not know this but her father is in severe debt. I know they don't have money for the modiste. And the way Whistledown speaks of her dresses, well I just can't help but think if something was bought with her in mind not her mother then she might attract more suitors." Anthony was rambling; he knew he was, he couldn't stop himself. His sisters were sure to give him a hard time.

"I think that's a lovely idea. I bet the modiste has her measurements." Daphne wanted this to be completed quickly before the next ball. "I bet if we goo now there won't be many people there we could get it done. Madam Delacroix could have it done before the next ball."

Anthony normally wouldn't be caught dead at the modiste but he was the man of the house and Daphne wasn't wrong. "Very well," Anthony nodded his assent and tapped the hood, "to the modiste please." Anthony relayed to their footman.

•~~~~•~~~~•~~~~•~~~~•~~~~•~~~~•~~~~•

Anthony really did not want to be here. There was no one else present so Madam Delacroix closed and locked the door and pulled the curtains shut.

"Why is there a man in my business?" Madam Delacroix asked, "I mean no disrespect Lord Bridgerton but men typically don't come here."

"Ah y-yes. I am" Anthony just gave his mother an imploring look.

"Madam, we have an unusual request." Violet interrupted her usual well spoken son. Lord if this is what Miss Featherington does to him in just thought she was going to invite her to every tea and meal time.

At Madam Delacroix's interested look Violet continued. "We would like to commission a gown anonymously for Miss Featherington. Miss Penelope Featherington." Violet corrected.

"I see." Delacroix sighed. "I will go get the yellows-"

"NO!" Came four shouts. The Bridgertons looked at each other thinking the same thing.

"Please, Madam. Anything but shades of yellow and orange." Anthony all but pleaded.

"Yes Madam Delacroix. We want Penelope to actually look appealing and not like a fruit that is peeling." Eloise spoke up. She might hate going to the modiste for herself but to have her best friend look and feel beautiful she would do anything.

"Yes, perhaps blue?" Daphne looked at her brother and then smirked at her mother. "We want to attract Lady Whistledown's attention but in a good way." All of the Bridgertons nodded in agreement.

"You do have her measurements, yes" Violet asked.

"May I ask, can I have some freedom?" Madam asked.

"Whatever do you mean?" Violet asked.

"Well I keep telling Lady Featherington that the waist on Penelope's dresses needs to be dropped. She is not as large as she appears, it is the cut of the dresses." Madam hesitated. She didn't know if she should say this in male company but damn she wanted to make this girl feel beautiful. "Her bosom is large. The waist cuts right through her bosom and makes her appear larger." She noted Anthony's blush but did not speak on it.

"Oh well of course. Why would anyone question your judgment?" Violet asked. "Is it possible to have the dress ready for Lady Danbury's ball?" Violet continued.

"Oh yes certainly!" Madam Delacroix was excited to start on this project. To be able to show how beautiful Penelope is. "Would you like to look at fabrics?"

"I'm sure Daphne and I would love to assist. Anthony, why don't you and Eloise wait in the carriage? This should only take a moment." Violet directed at her eldest.

"Certainly mother." Anthony said relieved. With that he and Eloise exited to the carriage. They were so relieved to be out of the modiste that no one noticed the starting as a man exiting the modiste would naturally bring.

"Do you like Penelope?" Eloise blurted out once they were in the carriage.

"Miss Featherington is fun to talk to. I do enjoy her company over some of the others in the ton." Anthony responded choosing his words carefully. "I can understand why you and Colin seek her out. She's much more entertaining than Miss Cowper."

"Hahaha" Eloise laughed loudly at that. "You know Cressida despises Penelope. We don't know why? Just last week she spilt a drink on Penelope in front of Colin. Disrespectful little Chit."

"Yes mother told me. We will have to keep her away from Penelope at Lady Danbury's ball." Anthony looked out the window thinking about the dances he would like to do with Penelope. "Might even waltz with her just to make Cressida mad. Does her mother alow her to waltz?"

Eloise's eyes were big at that. "I believe her mother would let her dance anything with anyone who is eligible." Eloise looked at her brother pointedly. If he wanted to court Penelope she wouldn't stop him but he should know that she was going to make him work for it.

"Very well. Please do not tell Penelope that we are doing this. It must be a surprise." Anthony looked at her now. "And do not tell mother what I asked you about." Anthony commanded quickly as Violet and Daphne were on the way to the carriage.

"Oh she's going to look marvelous. I cannot wait to hear what Whistledown says about her." Daphne squealed upon getting into the carriage.

"Yes. Mother, you need to ensure our brothers are at the Danbury ball."

"And may I ask why?" Reminding her son that she is still his mother.

"Oh so we can keep Cressida away from Penelope." Eloise spoke up.

"Oh yes we must. Truly Cressida is just wicked. We cannot let her ruin this gown." Daphne said earnestly.

Penelope receives a gift.

Portia is suspicious.

Chapter Text

Later that week, at the Featherington home. "Delivery for Miss Featherington." Came the voice of Madam Delacroix from the door.

"Madam, we have not commissioned from you recently. What is this?" Portia Featherington asked.

"Qui Lady Featherington. This was a commission from an anonymous party for Miss Penelope." Madam Delacroix pointedly looked at Penelope by the window.

"What?"

"Why would someone buy her a dress?"

Came the disgruntled responses of her sisters. Lady Featherington simply stared at her daughter inquisitively.

"W-who?" Penelope started. "Who sent it?" She asked, voice more firm.

"Ah, the anonymous part was important. They did leave a note though." Madam Delacroix explained.

Miss Featherington,

Your wit and personality shine on the dance floor. Perhaps with this your inner beauty can shine out. Please accept this token of gratitude.

Truly,

(bee emoji/picture of a bee)

"Ah." Penelope said making eye contact with Madam Delacroix "and when should I be wearing this?"

"Oh tonight I believe to Lady Danbury's ball." Madam Delacroix smirked. She knew this girl was smart. "Shall we go fit it?"

"Oh yes of course. Ms. Varley can you please show Madam Delacroix to where she needs to be? I'll be there momentarily."

As they walked away "Have you ruined yourself? Is this your payment for doing something improper?" Lady Featherington demanded. And though her words were harsh there was fear there for the worry that someone may have taken advantage of her youngest daughter's naivety. Say what one will about Lady Featherington but she would go to war for her daughters.

"What? Mama no! I would never. I do not even believe it is from a man. I believe it is from Daphne." Penelope lied she had no doubt this was Anthony's work, his mother and sister may have helped but that note was him. "I helped save her from a potentially disastrous situation. One not of her making. That is all."

"Very well. I suppose I cannot object to a gift. Move along, try it on." Lady Featherington commanded.

"Oh Madam Delacroix, it is beautiful." Penelope had tears in her eyes.

"Oui. I recommended the fabrics and the cut myself. Miss Penelope, you deserve to look beautiful. Are you ready to try it on? Though I believe it will fit perfectly."

"Yes I suppose." Penelope removed her dressing gown. Madam loosened her stays for her. At Penelope's questioning gaze Madam Delacroix stated.

"This cut does not require a false waist. This dress I made specifically for you Penelope. Your comfort and beauty are of the utmost importance."

"I see." Penelope raised her brows, "and did this anonymous gifter make mention of my dancing this evening?" Penelope wanted to know if she should be prepared to glue herself to a wall or not.

"Well not directly. There were comments made about you not having any empty slots on your dance card and," Madam Delacroix stopped unsure if she should say this next part.

"And?" Penelope implored.

"Well let's just say a mission to keep a blonde haired menace away from you." She responded, staring up at Penelope. Penelope's eyes widened and she couldn't help but grin.

"Oh my Miss Penelope. Are you ready to look? I really outdid myself if I do say so." Penelope nodded and turned with a gasp.

The woman in the mirror was unrecognizable. The blue of the dress was so pale to Penelope's bright hair. Her breasts were not cut halfway but politely on display which highlighted the fact that while her stomach wasn't flat she was very much a curvaceous woman. The sleeves gave the appearance of broader shoulders which made her body appear more proportional. Then there were the pearls on the bodice. This dress was just the right mix of Featherington flash and Bridgerton subtly.

"Oh Madam, I believe you can have all the credit on this one." Penelope said softly. "Can you ask for my mother to come here?" Madam nodded but Penelope could not remove her eyes from her own reflection. Not until she hears her mother's gasp.

"Oh Penelope." And Penelope doesn't think she's ever heard so much awe directed toward her from her mother. EVER. "You know how I feel about blue but I do not believe you have ever looked more beautiful. I suppose Daphne has good taste."

"Yes well I suppose. We will need to find a comfortable pair of shoes." Penelope stated.

"I believe I can help with that. I had these made. They simply had to go with this dress." Madam spoke up.

The shoes were beautiful. And added height to Penelope that made her legs appear longer.

"And what of my hair? Perhaps entirely up to ensure the dress is truly on display."

Both women nodded.

"Well it is after lunch. Did any alterations need to be made?" Lady Featherington asked. At the shake of Madam Delacroix's head. "Well then I suppose we can get you ready first then your sisters."

Chapter Text

Penelope as well as her family had arrived at the ball early. This was perfectly acceptable for Penelope as she was sure to get some great gossip before one of the Bridgertons was sure to drag her onto the floor. No sooner than that thought did they appear. Benedict escorting Daphne, Colin with his mother, and then there was Anthony. It did not pass anyone's notice how matched they appeared but also differently. It did pass Penelope's notice that they matched her as well. The statement could not be clearer. Penelope had the full support of the Bridgertons. That also came with the protection as well.

"Eloise said she saw the Featherington's leave about half an hour ago. She should be here already, yes?" Anthony asked his mother.

"Yes they are here I see her mother right there." Violet nodded in the direction of Lady Featherington.

"Why are you concerned with the Featherington's brother? further what is going on with Penelope?" Colin in all his immaturity did not see the bigger picture.

"His business with the Featherington's is none of your business, son." Violet said before Anthony could answer. She knows her children and out of all of her children Colin did not like to share.

"Anthony, I found her. Oh Madam Delacroix really out did herself." Violet looked toward Anthony and nodded in her direction.

Anthony's breath was stolen. Penelope looked stunning. Her hair was up with loose curls falling out. She opted out of necklaces allowing the dress and Penelope's beauty to shine through. But what fascinated and annoyed Anthony was the fact that she was alone. That would not do.

"Mother, if you would excuse me." Anthony stated. Anthony broke away from his family and made a bee line for Penelope.

"Wait, where is he going? Why is he going over to Penelope? My God what is she wearing?" This all came from Colin. Violet prayed to the lord that she would not have to deal with the violence of fighting brothers in her household.

"Come along Colin. I believe Miss Cowper was expecting a dance." Violet stated. Knowing Penelope was well in hand. Sure enough they found Miss Cowper with her eyes glued on Penelope with the most obvious sneer.

"Whatever you must do. Keep her away from Penelope. I will not have any more accidents with her. Do you understand?" Violet gave no room for arguments and left Colin in search of Benedict.

•~~~~•~~~~•~~~~•~~~~•~~~~•~~~~•~~~~•

"Miss Featherington" Anthony gave a polite head tilt. "You look dazzling."

"Thank you, Lord Bridgerton." Penelope said. "Although I feel I should be thanking you for more than just the compliments."

"I have no idea what you mean. I just came to compliment the most beautiful person in the room and to ask her for a dance."

"Well then I suggest you find her." Penelope chuckled. She had no doubt he meant her but she knew he was just being complimentary.

"Now Penny, that is very rude. I figured you would start to believe me." Anthony all but growled at her. Her self depreciation was weighing on him. How did she not know how beautiful she is?

"Penny?"

"Well Colin and Eloise call you Pen. I want something that's just for me. Can I Penny?" Anthony asked lowly. Penelope for her part simply opened her mouth to breathe and nodded her head. "Will you allow me this dance?"

"Yes I suppose." Penelope is unsure what exactly she was answering yes to. Though she supposed anything Anthony asked her she would say yes.

"Penny for your thoughts?" Anthony asked. Trying for joking but failing just slightly.

"Oh I'm sure my thoughts are not worth so much, Anthony." Penelope said with a demur smile.

"I would not be so sure. Please entertain me."

"Well I cannot help but notice there is quite a few shades of yellow around." Penelope stated, "One must wonder what or whom may have prompted this much yellow?"

Anthony the gentleman that he is either did not catch on to her remark or was pointedly being obtuse. "I am sure I do not know what you mean. Please do enlighten me."

"Well of course you would not notice the fashions of late gaining more yellow. Might very well have to do with you Lord Bridgerton."

"Me? I do not even like yellow." Anthony realized he spoke a little too loudly.

"And what is your favorite color?" Penelope was genuinely curious.

"Blue." Anthony replied without hesitation. At Penelope's inquisitive look Anthony ignored the unspoken question. "What is your favorite color then Penny?" This time Anthony made sure to whisper.

Penelope just smirked a little, "Brown." Anthony smiled at her then. Neither realized that the reason for the favorite color was the same. The other's eye color.

The song ended far too soon for either of their liking. Normally Penelope would have made haste to be off the floor but as she looked up from her bow she noted the Duke of Hastings standing next to Anthony with his hand out stretched.

"Dance, Miss Featherington?" He asked.

"Oh uh certainly your Grace." Before she could grab Simon's hand though Anthony grabbed her dance card.

"I hope you won't mind gracing me with one more dance tonight?" Anthony was already reserving the spot he wanted. Unknown to her it was the waltz.

"Of course Lord Bridgerton. Thank you."

Anthony nodded at the two. "Penny. Simon." He looked around for Cressida. Just to note where she was. She seemed to be rather well at hand conversing with Lord Twombly.

Anthony joined his brother, Benedict, off to the side. "You sure were wrapped up in your own world."

"I have no idea what you mean. Please do help me keep an eye on Daphne."

"Ah yes because you will be too distracted by our favorite redhead." Benedict murmured by was obviously ignored.

Chapter 7: Chapter 7

Summary:

Penelope's dance with Simon.

Notes:

You should know Simon and Daphne are not really doing the fake dating thing. He did originally start to seek her out as both a friend and to keep her away from slimey men. Pen does actually dance with him in the book but we don't see it in the show and that is just tragic.

(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)

Chapter Text

"Penny?" Simon questioned.

"I do not know how to respond to that your Grace."

"Well then Miss Featherington, might I ask another question?" You just did, she thought but nodded anyway. "What are your intentions with Anthony?"

Penelope actually stumbled. "Intentions? Me. I-I do not have any… that is to say I am not actively trying to attract Lord Bridgerton. I have been friends with Eloise and Colin for years." Simon nodded his head. She could tell he did not believe her but that did not matter.

"Can I ask you a question now?" He nodded, figuring it might be easiest. "What are your intentions with Daphne?"

"Wh-wh-what?" Simon had to compose himself. He could not start stuttering now.

Penelope had more grace than Simon expected for she ignored it.

"Daphne is my friend. She is more of a sister to me than my own. Are you serious about her, Hastings-"

"Simon. Please call me Simon."

"Simon. Are you seriously wanting her to be your wife? Because if you have no serious intentions-"

"I do." Simon interrupted her again. "I have never been so attracted to someone. She is easily my best friend. I feel even more comfortable around her than I do even Anthony." Simon answered honestly.

"Then why are you dragging your feet?" Penelope asked.

"Anthony." Simon answered.

"Simon, if I might give unsolicited advice? Talk to him. He has known you for a long time. Be honest with him and quit pretending to be such a rake." She said frankly. "It is undoubtedly what is making Anthony so angry."

"My my Miss Featherington how do you know such language?" Simon was shocked she would speak to him like this. The only other woman who has spoken to him like this has been Daphne. "You speak as if you know him." Simon's implication was perfectly clear.

"I do in a way. I will tell you like I told him. I am a wallflower. I see everything." She paused for a moment to see if he understood what she was implying. He did. "Anthony cares deeply for his family. I have no doubt that he would be willing to fight the crown to protect his family. Now he sees you, his friend who is a notorious rake. Whether you actually are or not trying to court his sister." She looked at him knowingly. She knows rakes. Anthony is a rake. Simon may sleep around but she could tell by his demeanor he was very particular.

"What am I supposed to say to him that will not make him want to hit me in the face or demand satisfaction?" Simon seemed to be in earnest.

"Well be truthful and don't be crude. We both know that Anthony thinks you only want to bed her" Penelope said rather crudely. "And we both know that that is not what you actually want. So tell him that." Their dance ended.

"Miss Featherington, might I request another dance before I deliver you to the next Bridgerton?" Simon asked with a rueful smile.

"Perhaps. Maybe the country dance? And maybe we can get Daphne to join in on the dance?" Penelope smirked at him.

"Yes I do believe that would be a good idea. Especially since you are spoken for the waltz." Simon smirked as he delivered Penelope to Daphne off to the side, obviously taking a break from dancing without waiting for her response.

"Here you are Miss Featherington, Daphne. I am off to find Lord Bridgerton." Simon made eye contact with Daphne and left.

"Good luck." Penelope called with a chuckle. Penelope looked at her card to find none other than Anthony Bridgerton's name down for the waltz. She fought a gasp. The audacity of that man just assuming she could waltz all though this evening seemed well planned he probably asked Eloise. This was shaping up to be a most exciting ball indeed. She was going to have much to write about. Unfortunately it would stem from her. Damn she hated writing about herself.

"What was that?" Daphne asked with feigned curiosity.

"Just the Duke being honest about his feelings." Penelope paused, enjoying the way Daphne tried not to look too curious. "For you that is."

"There you are!"

"There you are!" Before Daphne could respond came a rather firm voice. They both recognized it but perhaps not the tone. "I have been looking everywhere for you. Let us have our customary dance." The way Colin spoke. It sounded as if he thought he was doing her a favor. She couldn't refuse though. Not that he asked.

"Colin Bridgerton, that is no way to ask a lady to dance!" Daphne said sternly. She was quite disappointed with him.

"Well at least I offered." Colin responded, taking Penelope's hand and dragging her to the dance floor.

"What are you doing?" Colin demanded and continued questioning her anyway. "And what are you wearing?"

"Do you not like it? It is a gift." Penelope asked, more than a little irritated.

"I suppose you look nice but you look like you belong to us. The Bridgertons." the way he spoke he sounded like the thought disgusted him. Could this man not insult her for one night? She was not even sure if he meant to insult her.

"I believe that was the intent when your brother and mother and sisters made the purchase." Honestly Penelope was getting more than just a little frustrated with Colin's assumptive attitude. Thank God this was a short dance. She could not step on his toes out of spite without him knowing something was wrong.

"Why would my brother buy you a dress?" Colin's question may not have said much but the way he said it left nothing to the imagination. He was asking like her mother if she had ruined herself. And was that not the most insulting? Her mother seemed truly concerned for her. Colin seemed disturbed by the idea that perhaps someone would bed her. Before she could respond though he continued speaking, "No matter. Where is Marina at tonight?" Penelope should have been used to this idea.

"She is ill tonight as she was this morning when you attempted to call on her Mr. Bridgerton." Thankfully their dance ended and she was spoken for the next one. "Thank you for the dance Mr. Bridgerton." As Penelope turned to find Anthony, Colin grabbed her arm.

"Wait Penelope you must walk with me I wish to discuss matters with you." you wish to ask more about Marina you mean Penelope thought not so politely. She could thankfully see Anthony making his way to her his eyes honed in on where Colin was still holding her arm.

"I must decline. I am spoken for this dance." She stared at where Anthony was almost to them.

"Oh Penelope the next is a waltz. You never waltz." Colin said with humor, like he thought he was funny.

"I waltz when I am asked. And I was asked." Penelope pulled out of his grip right when Anthony arrived behind Colin.

"You do not have to lie. If you wanted to waltz I would have waltzed with you. As it stands we have already had our one customary dance." This man clearly was not picking up on the atmosphere or the fact that he was behaving like an absolute cad.

"Miss Featherington." Anthony spoke up behind Colin causing him to startle. Good he should be scared. He did not raise that boy to be so careless with a lady. "I believe we are to waltz."

"As I said Mr. Bridgerton," this time it did not go unnoticed by Colin nor Anthony. Colin reacted with open mouthed shock, Anthony a smirk. "I AM spoken for." Penelope moved to join Anthony, once again Colin grabbed at Penelope.

"I believe," Anthony said, his tone leaving no room for questioning, "Miss Featherington has found better company Colin." He stepped towards his brother and spoke lowly. "And unless you want to cause a scene Let. Her. Go." Colin released Penelope's arm as if burned. "She is not yours and does not need your pity any longer brother. Run along."

"Penny shall we waltz?" Anthony turned to her. Penelope's face was flushed and she was open mouthed breathing. "Are you okay, Penelope? "

"I-I-I am not sure. Colin has never treated me that way or no that is not right he has never so openly disregarded me I guess." Penelope seemed lost in thought. Truly she was. Admittedly she knew that Colin had no feelings for her. And she had vowed to stop having feelings for him, period. His blind pursuit of Marina was speeding her along for sure. "I guess I just thought he at least respected me."

"Do not worry your beautiful head over my dimwitted brother. I shall deal with him." He bowed and the dance started.

"Should we talk about much happier topics?" Anthony whispered to Penelope.

She gasped. Lord above this man would be the end of her. "Such as?"

"Hmmm, perhaps of the Duke's honest pursuit of my sister?" He held her tightly causing her breath to become shallow. "Perhaps you have something to say?"

"I simply," she had to take a deep breath. "Told him to be honest with you. Anyone with eyes can see that that man is gone on your sister. No need to stand in the way of it."

Anthony nodded. "I believe you are right but now I do not have anyone to talk of scandalous endeavors with as his will be my sister."

"Ah so are you having many scandalous endeavors?" Perhaps it was the dance or the heady smell of Anthony but Penelope felt drunk and could not hold her tongue.

"Hmm," Anthony all but purred, "not nearly as many as I wish. Not nearly as many as you probably assume, Penny." Anthony spoke directly into her ear.

Penelope gasped. How was she supposed to think or dance or even breathe when he did things like that? It caused heat to pool in her gut. She had explored that area before but she had never felt like this. Like she would honestly not have a single thought about allowing Anthony to ruin her right now. Damn him and herself she would become his mistress she did not care if it relieved this ache.

"My my that is the most beautiful blush." Anthony looked from her face and followed the blush to her bosom. He wanted to see how far that blush went. But he was a gentleman and these feelings have come from nowhere. He was a gentleman. He would court her first. "What thoughts are we thinking to cause that?" Anthony whispered to her.

"Nothing too scandalous, just that there are many people watching us." Penelope lied but she knew there were eyes on her and Anthony. Sure enough there were eyes and a few glares. Glares from the likes of Cressida Cowper and her little minions and from shockingly, Colin. Pride coming from the other Bridgertons and Lady Danbury. And perhaps the most incredible was the look of shock and pride and love coming from Portia Featherington. Penelope just knew they would be having a long conversation tonight.

"Yes I suppose there are quite a few people looking at us." Anthony said but he was not looking at anyone but Penelope. "Perhaps it is because of how wonderful you are at the waltz?" Anthony asked retorically as he pulled her even tighter to him. "Or maybe they see how ravishing you look in that dress, Penny." Anthony again spoke low and slow in her ear. She shivered. He smirked. He wanted her and she wanted him the issue was they are a lady and a gentleman. They could not just do that, there had to be intent or else it could go no further. Penelope was going to have to be the one to push away, to keep a level head, to think.

"Yes perhaps." Penelope pulled herself just a bit away from the scandalous closeness of Anthony. His face screamed disappointment. "Or perhaps they are wondering what I am doing for you to attract such attentions." There she said it. He needed to know the kind of talk that was being had. How even without comprimising her he already had.

"Surely not." Anthony was astounded.

"I assure you Anthony." Penelope said calmly and slowly. "My mother and your brother have already implied such. I was able to convince my mother as she believes the gift from Daphne. She was truly more concerned about me than whoever it may have been."

"And Colin? I am assuming it is Colin who would think I would disgrace you." Anthony growled low.

"Yes well he did not get much further than making the accusation before he interrupted his own thoughts by asking after Marina. Who is sick and he knows this." Penelope rolled her eyes. Anthony could not help but agree.

Their dance was coming to a close. He was looking for somewhere safe to deposit her. Any more contact with him will ruin her. Then he noticed Benedict off to the side with his mother. He was signaling to Anthony that he wanted him to come save him.

"Would you like to dance with Benedict?" Anthony asked her. Seeing a win win. Keep Penelope busy and away from Cressida and Colin and save his brother from the tourtue of who ever his mother surely wanted him to dance with.

Penelope laughed. "I suppose. The only Bridgerton I have not danced with tonight will be your mother." Penelope giggled. "Since Simon and I will do the country dance and we were hoping we could get Daphne in the mix."

"Very well," Anthony said. He did not part with her as the dance ended. Instead taking her arm and leading her to his mother and brother.

"Ah Miss Featherington. May I say you look ever the muse tonight." Benedict said. "Please do me the honor." With absolutely no shame in the desperation in his voice.

"Yes I suppose the anonymous donor of this lovely dress knew me quite well." Penelope pointedly looked at Violet. "And I would love to do you the honor."

As Benedict made to leave he was stopped by Anthony. "Whatever you do, do NOT let Colin steal her from you." Benedict just nodded in understanding.

"Mother? May I have a moment?" Anthony asked. Normally he would not leave especially with Daphne out on the floor but he knew that Simon was respectful and he would not allow any other disrespect.

"Yes I suppose." They walked to the day room off of the ballroom. They were here too often to know every nook and cranny of this home.

"Does everyone truly believe I have ruined Miss Featherington?" Anthony asked earnestly. This shocked Violet.

"Yes I do think that many do think that or they think you pity her." Violet said reasonably.

"I wish to court her." Anthony admitted. "I have thought about it before about the convience of marrying someone the whole family already loves but I believed that Colin had intentions." He paused and looked to his mother for understanding. "I do not feel the need to spare my brother's feelings at the cost of my own anymore. Penelope is a lovely woman and she already folds into this family."

"She is." Violet stated.

"If I were to court her though it would need to be an extended courtship." Anthony said. "People would try to use her or her sisters to gain favor and that is not fair to any of them."

"Very well court her in private. But know that there will be talk." Violet said.

"I must thank you, Miss Featherington. You saved me from having to dance with Cressida." Benedict said with a shiver of disgust.

"Mr. Bridgerton, how rude." Penelope said with faux disgust. "Though I cannot say that you are my worst partner of the night." She giggles as Benedict steps on her foot.

"I am so sorry. And Penelope, please call me Benedict." He murmured softly as he turned her. A little ashamed to have stepped on Penelope's foot.

"Ok Benedict." Penelope said with a gente smile. "Why do you hate Cressida?"

"You mean besides the obvious? She is mean. She is not just mean to you she is also mean to my sister and many other young debutantes." Benedict looked around to see if anyone was listening. He noticed his brother Colin glaring at himself or maybe he was glaring at Penelope.

"I have never figured out why she is so mean, it is like she is intimidated." Benedict continued.

"Intimidated? By me?" Penelope gave an unladylike snort, "That makes no sense. I am going to end up a spinster. My mother is even planning it."

"Why do you think you are going to be a spinster? You are a catch. Smart, beautiful, and witty. What more could a man ask for?" Benedict did not understand why Penelope was still thinking she was not desired.

"I think it is more of what less could a man want, meaning less of me." Penelope tried for witty but it hurt her to speak of herself this way.

"Penelope, I say this with the utmost respect. Hang all of them. Whoever made you feel like you should be less is wrong. You are beautiful. A man who cares about that is not the kind of man you want."

"Well what about you?" Penelope rebutted.

"Penelope have you seen me even dance with a woman not my sister tonight?" Benedict tilted his head. "I am too focused on my career right now to worry about finding a wife."

"We will have to agree to disagree." Penelope said as they finished their dance.

"No I do not. Pen, do you have a partner for the next dance?"

"As a matter of fact I do. The Duke of Hastings asked me, but" Penelope paused, looking for Daphne who was by Simon talking and giggling with him, "if Daphne does not have a partner maybe you could ask her?"

"So that Simon may dance with her more?" Benedict looked suspicous as they made their way to his sister and Simon.

"Well if the dance happens to switch partners and they happen to pair up. Who could predict it honestly."

"Mischievous." Benedict said. "Add that to the reasons why you are desirable Miss Featherington." Benedict gave her his megawatt will melt your knees smiles.

"Ah Hastings, sister." Benedict announces their arrival. "I believe I have your partner for the next dance. Sister, do you have a partner?"

"I do not. Are you sure you want to dance this one with me? You know this dance changes partners right?" Daphne and Penelope smile at Benedict.

"I know." Benedict stage whispers, "I believe that is the point."

They make their way to the floor not noticing Colin joining the floor.

With Cressida Cowper.

•~~~~•~~~~•~~~~•~~~~•~~~~•~~~~•~~~~•

"Shit." Benedict said as the dance began.

"Ben what is it?" Daphne asked surprised. It was not uncommon for her brothers to swear in front of her but it also was not common either.

"Anthony asked me to specifically keep Pen away from Colin and our one goal of the night was to keep Cressida away from Pen. Colin just went and fucked it all up." Benedict gestured with his chin.

"What is wrong with him?" Daphne asked. "He has been most rude to Penelope all night and now to dance with Cressida. She is a devil. Why would he even dance with her?"

"I do not know but now I have to figure out if I snub her or him by dancing with Pen again. People are already talking about her. Our family was not very subtle in dressing tonight." Benedict looked pointedly at his attire.

"Yes, well." Daphne was at a loss for words. "We will have to let it happen. We cannot control it. unless I swoop in and grab Colin. That would leave you open for Cressida. And Simon or someone else can get to Pen." Daphne said.

"Good idea. I will tell Hastings right before the change."

They back up for the change. "Hastings, keep her away from Cressida." Benedict whispered. Simon nodded his assent. Colin made his move and Daphne swooped right in.

"What is going on with you?" Daphne asked.

"I do not know what you mean." Colin was looking for Penelope who was dancing with Mr. Weatherby. "Why is everyone acting as if I am doing something wrong?"

"Perhaps it has something to do with the fact that you are treating her like she is yours yet you make it well known to everyone that you do not want her." Daphne scolds him. "Let her be happy, Colin. It is none of your business who she dances with tonight because she is not yours."

They change partners one last time. Colin makes his move again only to be cut off by Benedict.

"I got you, do not worry." Benedict whispers.

"I am not worried. I just do not want to have this conversation with him tonight." Penelope answers honestly.

"Well it is a good thing your lovely knights are here to serve." Benedict gives an over exaggerated bow.

"Oh well Sir Benedict thank you so very much for being my hard won champion for the night." Penelope laughs.

"Oh I do not believe that credit goes to me but my older brother. Hm Pen is he a champion for you? For your heart maybe?" Benedict asks, mostly joking but also wanting to see if she would answer.

"Maybe." Penelope whispers, arriving to her mother. Benedict bows once more to her and smiles as he walks away. His brother finally found his Viscountess now just to actually get her.

Chapter Text

It was not many days after the ball that found Penelope in the drawing room of the Bridgertons seeking out Anthony.

"Lord Bridgerton," Penelope stated, much to the surprise of all those present, "might I have a word?"

Oh this was serious. She had that same look in her eye when she told him about Berbroke.

"Certainly Miss Featherington. Should someone join us?"

Penelope nodded and looked at Lady Bridgerton "Will you please join us?" The earnest look in her eyes Violet did not hesitate to lead them to Anthony's study.

Anthony turned to Benedict "No one is to eavesdrop. I feel this might be a serious conversation. Benedict?" For his part Benedict nodded.

Anthony joined his mother and Penelope. His mother had seated herself. Penelope for her part just appeared more and more stressed. She finally turned to Anthony when she was by his various containers of alcohol. "May I?" For his part Anthony just blinked and nodded.

"Anthony!" Violet was scandalized.

"Trust Lady Bridgerton you may want one before I'm done." With that Penelope drank her whole glass of rum down. She really liked rum thank goodness Anthony had taste.

"Marina is with child." Penelope blurted as she plopped down with her second glass.

"What?!!"

"WHAT! That stupid no good second brother cannot even keep his useless cock away from respectful ladies." Anthony was angrily muttering to himself but she certainly heard the word cock.

"It is not Colin's." That stopped them both dead.

"Penelope I believe I am going to need to hear more." Anthony walked around his desk. Penelope held out her empty glass he filled hers and one for himself and his mother. Yes they did indeed need a drink. "Last one."

Penelope nodded. She took a deep breath and started to tell the story. She explained how their family found out, the plot her mother had, and the plot that Marina had made. She also explained that Colin intends to marry her and would not listen to her.

"That explains why Eloise asked how one comes to be with child." Violet saw no humor in the situation save for the curiosity of her children.

"I beg your pardon?" Anthony asked, "Do you mean to tell me Eloise does not know?"

"Anthony, it is not proper." Violet explained.

"Mother, it is their bodies. Daphne does not know either, does she?" Violet shook her head. "Mother, you would send your daughter to her marriage bed with not a clue what to expect. Nor how to make a child?"

"Well it is not like I had any information either." Violet defended.

"Yes mother but were you not terrified? Hell I was terrified and I was knowledgeable." Anthony decided. "Mother you will explain to them both in detail otherwise I will. I will not have Daphne off to be wed and be dumb about it."

"Very well." Violet confirmed. "I do rather believe we have strayed from the topic."

"Yes. Why did you come to us now?" Anthony asked Penelope who looked on at the mother-son duo with amusement.

"I believe Colin to believe himself in love and I believe he intends to elope with Marina." Penelope finally says.

"I do not know what to do. I know of the man who is the child's father but he is on the front lines. I figured someone of your status may know how to get a message to him?" Penelope stated. "It would be my hope that Sir George Crane would come back, make an honest woman of Marina, and take her to be happy."

"Crane you say?" Anthony asked. Penelope just nodded. "I know them. We are not terribly close but I have met their father in my youth."

Penelope just raised an eyebrow at him 'in my youth' as if he was old.

"Very well." Anthony was thinking. "May I bring Colin here so we can speak?"

Penelope nodded. "And Benedict too please?" Anthony nodded and headed off.

"Why Benedict?" Violet asked her.

"He is the one to most quickly dissolve a tough situation."

"Good point."

Penelope began pacing the room. She had glasses made for everyone and she did stop drinking. Three glasses was too much for her; she had to admit that.

As Anthony, Benedict, and Colin walked in, Colin became more suspicious when he saw Penelope. "What did you do?" She had never heard him speak like that before.

Anthony guided her to his seat. He was placing the most space between Penelope and Colin. Colin was not right; his emotions or maybe his mental state was in question because he was acting out of character.

Penelope just looked at Anthony. He stared at her for a moment then finally looked at Colin. "Marina is pregnant." Anthony could not shelter him any longer it was time for him to grow up.

"What? No! I never." Colin argued and then for some bizarre reason turned on Penelope. "Are you truly that jealous of your cousin that you would smear her name to my family? I trusted you when I said we planned to elope and you lie to my family? When are you going to realize I will never love you? Get over your stupid little cru-" smack.

"Do not EVER speak to a woman like that EVER again. Do you understand me, son?" Colin's cheek was a beautiful red and Violet's hand stung. She has never put her hands on any of her children. She does not know what came over her but the disrespect on a woman who she knows is protecting him. She will not stand for it.

For his part Colin just blinked. For the first time in his 22 years his mother hit him. He just nodded.

Penelope spoke up, "You may not have noticed Mr. Bridgerton but my world does not revolve around you. Yes, at one point I fancied myself to have feelings for you. But then I witnessed your disregard for those around you and it quickly dissolved." Penelope stole Anthony's glass. She needed it. "As for the truth in my statement, let me raise a scenario. Perhaps Ms. Thompson has been more pushy? Perhaps she has tried to get you alone? Perhaps she has tried to get you to consummate your relationship? Any of this ringing a bell?" Penelope knew she was being ruthless but he was so rude to her.

"I-I how did you know that?" Colin was visibly upset. His whole form shaking. While Penelope could feel bad for her friend she still hated him for the words he just spoke to her.

"How do you think Colin? I know because she told me. Because her and my mother would rather take advantage of you then find Marina in ruin. A ruin she herself made." She could pity him and still be mean.

She was done with Colin for now. Violet nodded. "Anthony please see Miss Featherington home." Violet stated.

"Yes mother." With that he left his study with Penelope in front of him. A constant barrier from Colin.

Chapter Text

"Penelope?" Anthony said from his tone it could have been the hundredth time she's said it.

"Yes I'm sorry?" Penelope responded clearly in another world. A world without the ache of his stupid brother possibly.

"I asked if you would just like to stay here for the night. You can break fast with us and then go home in the morning." Anthony offered.

"Oh no I could not pos-"

"Yes you can. Mother wants you here as do the rest of the family. Most importantly I want you here. So please join us." Anthony pleaded. He did not want her to leave.

"I will have a footman send word that you shall stay here. I am certain you still have clothes in your usual room. Honestly Penny you are too drunk for me to deliver you to your home." Anthony just overruled her. "Are you okay?"

Penelope looked around. They had been walking and were near the library she pulled him that way. She would not break down for just anyone to see. As soon as the door closed she broke.

"Shh Penny it is okay. You did the right thing. You are okay." Anthony said all of this while holding Penelope and rocking her.

"How could he say that to me? Like I have not spent years in this home. Like I have not helped Gregory with his Latin or braided Hyacinth's hair. Like I have not actively participated in this family because you treat me with respect. I thought my friendship meant something and now I find out that he believes everything I do is because of him. How funny is that right? He is hardly the only thing I concern myself with on a daily basis. I mean I spend more time thinking of ways to avoid Cressida Cowper then I do him." Penelope was on a roll.

"Hey. Shhhh. It is okay. I must apologize for my brother he is an absolute cad."

Penelope could not help but laugh. It was true Colin was a cad.

"He has so much growing up to do. He is not thinking of everyone. He is being selfish and when it come to matters of the heart one can do that but he truly thinks my day begins and ends with him." Penelope looked at Anthony. "You know he all but implied I was your mistress and that you were paying me in pretty dresses. Like I wore that dress for HIM." Penelope sobbed. A year ago, sure she dressed herself with Colin in mind but if she was honest with herself she dressed herself in whatever would attract a suitor. Now she did not care so much for him she just felt the need to find a husband.

"He should go away." Penelope stated firmly. "Not as punishment but he has always wanted to travel. Perhaps the hardships of the world will help mature him. He seems to be spiraling."

Anthony nodded, "Yes quite. I believed I was the only one seeing it." Penelope shook her head in agreement. "I suppose facing hardships is what will help him mature. It helped mature me."

"Yes but your hardships were an entire Viscount title and your entire family. It was too much on you at such a young age truly."

Anthony could not believe this woman. She knew him so well. "Yes." Anthony responded for lack of anything to say. He walked her to the door of the room she always used. That was the thing with Penelope; she was family.

She had a room, always. Her room was in between Daphne and Eloise. "Here you are Penny. I will have a maid come and help you ready for sleep. Rest easy. I will see you in the morning."

"Good night, Anthony." Penelope felt the night starting to wear on her. "Thank you."

"You never have to thank me, Penny. Sleep well." Then in behavior most unlike him he kissed her hair. She went into her room not making a connection. Anthony was two steps away from the door. Christ above he just did that.

Chapter Text

"Good Morning Bridgertons" Penelope said trying to put on a smile. It is a hard thing to do with the pounding in her head.

"Ah good morning lovely Miss Featherington." Benedict's overly loud voice. He handed Penelope a drink. "Drink this, eat some bread and drink plenty of water." He whispered. If anyone knew how to deal with being sick from drink it was Benedict. A little more loudly he said "When are you going to let me draw you Miss Featherington?"

"Benedict let her get in the room before you start accosting her!" Anthony's stern voice came.

"Please call me Penelope, Mr. Bridgerton." Penelope said to Benedict, completely ignoring Anthony.

"Well then call me Benedict, you can call me Ben if you like." He winked at her. His flirting was light. She is beautiful, yes but with his brothers fighting over her he did not want to add his hat into the mix. He just could not stand for the injustice of a beautiful woman feeling as though no one desires her because they are too afraid to admit it.

"Benedict!" Anthony and Colin shouted. Penelope giggled. She looked at the concoction that Benedict handed her, time to face the music. She drank it in one gulp.

"That a girl!" Benedict cheered. "Penelope, why are we not better friends?"

"Oh Ben. I believe that might have to do with your more rakish ways."

"Penelope. I would never. You are a lady and I am a perfect gentleman." Benedict faked hurt and Penelope just gave an unladylike snort and rolled her eyes.

"The only gentleman in this room is Gregory." She looked at said boy with a smile. Gregory smiled. He could not help but blush.

"Thank you, Penelope. I try." Gregory tried not to laugh at his brothers' affronted faces. He knew she was teasing.

"May I take my seat now Benedict or are you going to continue putting on a show for your family?" Penelope grinned at Benedict.

"Oh I knew I liked you. Very well." Benedict just smiled.

The only empty seat was next to Anthony, across from Lady Violet, and next to Benedict. It is the seat meant for the Viscountess. Penelope did not take notice to the rest of the family; the statement could not be more clear.

"How did you sleep?" Anthony asked once she sat.

"Very well. The beds here are much better than mine at home." Penelope then whispered, "Then again it could have been all the rum." Only Benedict and Anthony heard and they both started giggling.

"Hey! Penelope, what are you saying over there that has my brothers giggling like school girls?" Daphne asked. "Simon will not believe me when I tell him."

"How is that going? Has he made an offer yet?" Penelope asked, avoiding her question.

"Do you promise to tell no one?" Penelope nodded. "He has asked. Lady Danbury will be hosting the engagement ball for us."

"Oh I am so happy for you! I told him he just needed to be honest." Daphne looked a little surprised Anthony did not.

"You did?"

"Yes well at Lady Danbury's ball before I was stolen away from you," Penelope did not look at Colin but Daphne and Anthony knew it was him and glared, "I told you that we had talked about you. He was concerned about Lord Bridgerton objecting. I just told him he needed to be honest with both of you. Being cheeky has a time and place." She looked pointedly at Benedict who just grinned. "But I know neither of you really appreciate it when it comes to things that matter."

"Thank you, Penelope."

"I was wrong, Penelope," Benedict said. "I do not wish to draw you. I must paint you."

Penelope just sputtered. "See cheeky."

"Oh Penelope I am never cheeky about art."

"You-you cannot be serious? Me? Why would you ever want to paint frumpy old me?" Penelope was on a roll today.

"Well I know what we are doing today. We are going to the gallery. Frumpy? pish posh. More like Venus herself."

Penelope sat slack jawed. She could not think of anything to say. What do you say when one of the most handsome men that you know compares you to a goddess?

"Laying it on a bit thick there, do you not think brother?" Colin, why did it have to be Colin. He did not know when to just shut up.

"No I do not think and I do not think I will be taking your opinion on women, brother." The barb was there and it was direct. The younger Bridgertons did not understand. Daphne and Eloise heard the unintentional insult that came from Colin but the hostility from Benedict was unexpected.

"Penelope," Hyacinth ever the charmer changed the subject, "who do you think Lady Whistledown is?"

Penelope choked on her tea a little. "Well I have not really thought about it? My first instinct is Lady Danbury but then again she will just say it to your face. I really could not say."

This started up a conversation about Whistledown that thankfully took the attention off of her. Penelope could still feel the tenseness of the previous conversations.

"Well you all need to go get ready to go to the gallery." Anthony said, looking pointedly at his mother. He needed a moment alone with Penelope.

"Yes yes let us go." Violet worked to clear the room. When Penelope went to stand Anthony stopped her with a hand on her bare arm. Penelope shivered. It was not often that skin to skin contact was made with anyone but Anthony's hand was very warm.

"Penelope," Anthony paused, ensuring that all the noise was gone, "I need to ask you a question."

"Yes Anthony?" Penelope said imploringly. She had no idea what he could be asking.

"What can I do for you in return for what you have saved my family from?" Anthony did not know how else to show his appreciation. "I need you to know how grateful my whole family is. Even Colin even though he is hurt. But that is not your fault. I could purchase another dress if you would like."

"I do not think that would be wise. You have heard all the gossip. I-You do not have to do anything for me. I did what I did because it is wrong." Penelope said earnestly.

"You let me know when you think of something. Now do you want to come with us to the gallery or would you like me to make an excuse for you?"

"I would love to come. I do need to go home. I do not have anything here that is appropriate." Penelope said.

"Very well I will escort you over and ask you mother or father if you can join." Anthony stated.

"That is unnecessary."

"Ah I have things to discuss with your father anyway." Anthony lied.

Chapter Text

"Lady Featherington, Lord Featherington, Miss Featherington, Miss Featherington." Anthony greeted. "Lord and Lady Featherington I was just escorting Penelope home and my family wanted to invite her to the gallery today. Would that be acceptable?"

"Oh yes of course Lord Bridgerton." Portia said.

"Very well Penelope. I will wait here for you." Anthony directed toward Penelope. He turned to her family, "my family is preparing already. I am the only one up and ready for the day I am afraid."

Penelope scurried off to get ready.

"Yes, well with your lot I am surprised you all can get anywhere on time." Lord Featherington said.

"Yes, quite." Anthony laughed a little. "Miss Featherington, Miss Featherington, how is your season going?" Anthony cared about who might be his in laws one day.

"Oh simply wonderful." Phillipa expressed excitedly. "Mr. Finch is making a suit. I think he might ask for my hand soon. Do you know him, Mr. Bridgerton?" She asked. Anthony had to think. He knew many people. He also could not help but notice the flinch from Mr. Featherington.

"I believe so. He has danced with you at the last few balls, yes?" At her nod he continued. "Yes. Good man. Strong family ties. And I have not heard of any impropriety with women. Perfectly respectable. He would certainly suit."

Phillips lit up at that. She clasped Prudence's hand. "Oh thank heavens. I just hope he proposes soon. These seasons are so dreadfully draining." Note to self encourage Mr. Finch.

"Yes I know just what you mean." Anthony said. "Mr Featherington, might I have a word?" He phrased it as a question. It was not.

Mr. Featherington guided them to his study.

"I will be direct sir. I want to court Penelope but I do not want anyone to know as I do not want anyone taking advantage of you or your daughters. I am not asking permission. She would surely skin me if she thought I did. But that is not why I pulled you in here." Anthony paused. This was delicate. "When your daughter mentioned Mr. Finch proposing you flinched. What is the status of their dowries? I do not care about Penelope's."

Lord Featherington sank into his chair. This child asked about his finances and he was right to. "There is not one for any of my girls." He admitted.

"Allow me to provide at least one to whoever marries first. A secure marriage will surely help secure your family." Anthony said. "You must not tell Penelope though."

"Must not tell me what?" Penelope said as she came into the room. She looked beautiful in a sage green day dress with her hair loose but pinned back. "Must not tell me what, Anthony?"

Anthony just looked at Mr Featherington imploringly. "She knows more than you think." Penelope knew this was about money she turned and closed the door.

"If this is about our finances it is a discussion for me as well." Penelope stated Matter of factly as she leaned against her father's desk. "I am the one keeping us afloat as it is right now."

As if Penelope could not be more perfect for Anthony caring about his family and then putting them in line. Calming him and being stable with finances. She was incredible. "Oh ummm very well. I offered to pay one of your sisters dowries. His mistakes should not cost you or your sisters a good match."

Penelope just gasped. "You-you are not joking are you?" When Anthony shook his head. "When you asked what you could do to repay me this morning I did not think you would do this." This caught Mr. Featherington's attention. "Oh worry not father I just told them of mama's plan with Marina. I did not get to tell you that Marina made plans to run off to Gretna Green with Colin to trap him did I?"

Mr. Featherington looked faint, "Mr. Bridgerton you must know I had no knowledge of this." Anthony just shook his head.

"I have no doubt this was a plan from a desperate mama and a woman in a condition that no gentleman should have left her in."

"In his defence he is on the front lines." Penelope attempted to defend.

"Yes and he should not have taken such liberties without having wed her first."

"Oh as if you have not taken plenty of liberties with women. The only thing that makes this situation more troublesome is the child." Penelope said with an eye roll.

"Be that as it may I would not leave a woman in such a condition with no prospects."

"And if the soprano fell in these conditions?"

"She did not and will not as we are no longer involved. Not that it is any of your business."

Mr. Featherington felt like he was watching a tennis match, this was much more entertaining though. Well matched indeed. He would have never thought to make the match himself but he had faith in his little girl once she was comfortable she would bloom and she was right in front of his eyes and he could not help but feel blessed about it.

"Nevertheless; I do not believe that is the point. Lord Bridgerton I will gladly accept this dowry. I do not know if I can repay you-"

"You will be repaid by the beginning of next season. I promise you that much." Penelope interrupted her father. She would have more than enough funds from Whistledown and her own investments to more than pay back the dowry.

"It is entirely unnecessary." Anthony said. "We really must be going, Penelope. My family awaits and they do get rather impatient. Do not worry about a thing Mr. Featherington. I will speak with the Finchs myself. You may see a daughter wed before the end of the season."

"Yes, well it would be a true blessing." Mr. Featherington stood to walk him out. "Thank you Lord Bridgerton. I owe you a great debt."

Anthony just nodded and led Penelope out of her home to his family waiting across the street.

"Finally!" Eloise said.

"We have only all been here for a moment, Eloise. The carriages are not even here yet." Benedict pointed out.

"Yes, well be that as it may. I call Pen. She is my best friend."

"Yes, I believe you, Benedict, Penelope, and I in one carriage. Mother, Hyacinth, Gregory, Daphne, and Colin in the other." Anthony told her.

"Why do I have to ride with the children?" Colin petulantly said, pouting much like a child.

"Because you are acting as a child." Anthony glared at Colin daring him to question his authority.

Colin said nothing but continued to pout. The carriages came around. Benedict loaded in first and assisted Eloise in. Anthony ever the gentlemen assisted his mother and other sisters first. By the time he made it back to his carriage Penelope was already inside. Oh well there were more opportunities to be a gentleman.

Chapter Text

The carriage ride to the gallery was peaceful. Their carriage was mostly filled with talk between Eloise and Penelope. Simple things really like the patriarchy and who was Whistledown.

When they arrived Anthony pushed Benedict to go assist his mother and sisters. He assisted both Eloise and Penelope out of the carriage.

The group gathered together. "Well you all know the rules. Children no running. And Penelope I do hate to have to say this but try not to be alone with any of my grown sons." Violet sighed. She did not want any more talk of her children but especially of Penelope, her name could not take any more.

"Well then Penelope, Eloise come along so I may show Miss Featherington why she is a goddess." Benedict said with that amazing smile again.

"Put it away, lest my knees give out from your charm." Penelope flirted right back. How this man could so easily dish out compliments she did not know.

Penelope accepted his arm with Eloise on her other, the rest of their party completely forgotten.

Benedict took them to a painting on the wall. It was of a woman, a fairly full figured woman draped in cloth with men doing her bidding.

"This is what I mean when I tell you that you are stunning, Penelope." Benedict whispered honestly. "This woman has all of these men doing her bidding and she is not petite nor is she skinny. She looks like a woman."

Penelope was stunned. Eloise and her never looked at paintings like these as they usually discussed the ones where women were simply an object.

"I-I do not know what to say. Surely I look nothing like her." Penelope finally found her words.

"Pen, I must say the resemblance is shocking. This woman looks to be taller but beyond that and the hair she could almost be you." Eloise got closer to say, "Although I believe your bosom might be bigger."

Penelope laughed loudly, missing the sound of two men choking. When she finally got her giggles under control she turned and noticed both Benedict and a newly arrived Anthony were red in the face. Ah so Eloise was not as quiet as she thought.

"Lord Bridgerton, how nice of you to join us." Penelope did not know what to do with that look on his face.

"Yes well Hastings is here so Daphne wanted to walk with them so Mother is chaperoning them and Colin is keeping his eye on Gregory and Hyacinth." Anthony seemed flustered. Surely it was not because of a comment about her bosom. He is a rake. He has had multiple beautiful women. A joke about her chest could not be the reason for the blush.

"Bet Colin loves that." Benedict said sarcastically.

"Oh yea he's having the time of his life. But I suppose there's a lesson to that." Anthony smirked. He and Benedict knew what he meant even if Eloise did not.

"Shall we go see more?" Anthony asked as he offered his arm to Penelope. Penelope nodded and accepted his arm.

"I must apologize for my behavior this morning." Penelope said. "I do not like people coming in to handle our finances. We would have figured out her dowry if needed. As it stands I still apologize for being so abrasive." She spoke over him trying to interrupt.

"I accept your apology but it is unnecessary. I should not have overstepped." Anthony admitted to his fault.

"Yes, well with any luck we can find someone for Prudence." Penelope paused, gazing up at Anthony, "Any ideas?"

"Does your sister truly care for the London seasons?" Penelope shook her head. Honestly none of the Featherington daughters cared for the seasons they just wanted to find husbands. "Well in that case I may know a few people I could enquire about, maybe suggest something in the off season?"

"Anthony Bridgerton, you would be my absolute hero." Penelope said with genuine awe in her voice.

"And yet you are the one who has saved my family from two great tragedies." Anthony retorted.

"I love your family. I could not see Daphne in an abusive marriage any sooner than I could see Colin in a loveless one. Both would be destroyed and it would in turn destroy what I love most about your family." Penelope might as well make herself clear. "I will do anything in my power to protect your family."

Anthony could do nothing but be breathless. Just then Hyacinth ran by and slammed into a man causing him to spill his drink all over the woman he was with. The man went to grab Hyacinth before Anthony could even make a move Penelope stepped in.

"There you are!" Hyacinth looked at Penelope with a bit of fear in her eyes. "Oh my you have certainly made a mess. Forgive me sir. It was my duty to watch her on this outing. I was quite distracted by the beautiful pieces and she just wandered away. You know how children are?" Penelope tried for confident, anything to distract this man from his anger and embarrassment to let Hyacinth go. "Hyacinth, I believe you have something to say?" She looked pointedly at her.

"I-I am so sorry." Hyacinth was putting on a show now, giving little sobs like she was truly terrified. She knew she was safe, Penelope was there. "I was trying to get away from a stupid boy he would not leave me alone." She looked up at the man with her big eyes, the ones that get Anthony to do whatever she wants. It seems they have worked again.

"I understand. Next time, " The man hesitates but drops to her level, "Be more careful. We would not want any of the art ruined here."

Hyacinth nodded. "Come along, I believe it is time to go."

As they walked to rejoin Anthony, Hyacinth looked at Penelope. "You are my hero. When are you going to marry one of my brothers?" Penelope burst out laughing at that.

"What could possibly be so funny at a time like this?" Colin demanded from his spot next to Anthony. He was still angry about being in trouble earlier.

"Your sisters are trying to marry me off to one of her brothers again." Penelope said, pointedly looking at Anthony. He would understand why it was funny. Anthony burst out laughing.

"Come along, I believe it is time for us to go." Anthony ignored Colin's infuriated Again?.

"What is so funny?" Hyacinth asked, confused but overjoyed at seeing her brother smiling. He has been doing that more.

"Daphne said something similar a few weeks ago." Penelope finally said.

"Oh. Okay." Hyacinth accepted that response "I still want you to marry one of my brothers though." She said with a smile. She snickered when Penelope stumbled.

Anthony was able to contact the Cranes and was able to find Sir George. He married Marina and took her away from the ton.

Simon and Daphne get married. The Featherington's are invited. Anthony spends the whole night trying to find someone suitable for Prudence.

Phillipa gets married. Anthony is invited.

Mr. Featherington does not die.

There is 1 chapter left. I got a little lazy because I really wanted to write the aubrey hall scene and season 2. So there will be a little time jump.

Chapter Text

The season ended as a success. Both the Featheringtons and Bridgertons married off a daughter with little scandal.

As the season came to a close, old friends must find their way. It is at the Duke and Duchess of Hastings ball Colin approaches Penelope.

"Miss Featherington, might I request a dance?" Colin asks her.

"Of course." Penelope has learned over the season how to pick her battles and it seems like Colin was going through enough.

Colin's behavior since the gallery visit has been different. He has given Penelope a wide berth. He has attempted to do some self reflection.

"I am leaving." Colin finally said. "I believe you might be who to thank for that."

"I did nothing. I know you want to travel and I truly believe you will grow from it. Where will you go?" Penelope said. She was a little sad. Colin was leaving one of her best friends was leaving.

"I think I will start in Greece. From there I am unsure." He answered. He looked conflicted like he had more to say but felt guilty.

"Colin what is it?" Penelope implored him to answer.

"I" He started. Then tried again. "Can I write to you Penelope?"

"Yes you can. I will be your most diligent correspondent." She said seriously.

"Thank you Penelope. And I am sorry. I have been absolutely wretched this season. I have behaved like a child. Less than Hy or Greg and that is truly shameful." He was genuinely hurt by his own behavior if the tears in his eyes were anything to go by.

"Colin, you were forgiven the moment it happened." Penelope started. "Do not misunderstand. I was still hurt but I know you are not truly wretched. You are one of my best friends. I know you. I think you need to go out there and find yourself. Find the you that you show to me and the rest of your family. Not the you that Whistledown or the ton sees. That is the Colin that must come home."

"My Penelope how is it that you know just what to say?" Colin said, suddenly remembering why she is his best friend. "Penelope you know I love you right? Maybe not in the way you may have wanted but I do love you. I want nothing but happiness for you."

Penelope gasped. Maybe a year ago or even a few weeks ago Penelope would be so giddy to hear those words but her honest breathlessness was at how earnest he was and how she has never heard those words from one not family.

"Colin, I will admit if you had said those words at the beginning of the season I surely would have swooned." She giggled, "I love you too. Truly in the deepest ways. But I want nothing but happiness for you and I know that will not be with me. I let the idea of you go many weeks ago."

"Maybe when Anthony started to speak to you more?" Colin smirked. Penelope's blush was his favorite thing. "Worry not Pen. I will not say anything but if you feel the need when you write to express your woes about my brother I will be ever your humble servant."

"Oh Colin you truly are my best friend you know that?" Penelope said, her eyes tearing up just a little.

Colin backed away and bowed deeply and kissed her hand. "Will you be there to see me off in two days please?" Colin asked truly.

"Of course I will." Penelope said as Colin escorted her to her favorite post.

"Then I will bid you good night. There is much to be done before I leave." Colin made his way out.

The night went off well. Penelope got much gossip and ignored the bits about herself. She watched as her sister danced with her new husband. Positively glowing. She was truly happy for her. Daphne saw her and waved from her place greeting guests. Daphne took to her role as Duchess as if she had been doing it her whole life. Two women she cared for deeply had success this season and truly Penelope could not be happier.

•~~~~•~~~~•~~~~•~~~~•~~~~•~~~~•~~~~•

Two days later found the Bridgertons and Penelope and Simon waving off Colin. He hugged all of his siblings and kissed his mother's cheek. When he got to Penelope she handed him a package.

"What is this?" Colin asked.

"Well open it you silly man." Penelope commanded. Colin opened a rather nice leather bound journal and what was a new concept: a pen. There was also a decent amount of stationary with wax. "I figured what you cannot fit in a letter write in that journal. Fill it and then find another to fill it and then bring it home and share it with your family and me," she whispered with a grin, "your best friend."

"Pen have I ever told you how much I love you?" Colin said with a grin, he hugged her quickly as otherwise would be improper.

"You have but you can stand to say it more." Penelope grinned at him. She had the feeling their friendship would only get better.

"Ah, fishing for compliments? I think I will leave that to my brother." Colin grinned and winked at her. He could not help but laugh at her blush and shove.

"Be safe." Penelope said most sincerely.

Colin walked to the waiting horse and footman.

"Make sure to write. I want to hear all about your travels." Eloise said. His family gave similar sentiments. Colin rode away, his family watching until he was no longer visible.

The Bridgertons all dispersed save for Violet and Anthony.

"Miss Featherington, I would like to extend an invitation to Aubrey Hall this summer." Violet said. She would see another of her children wed by next seasons end.

"Oh, Lady Violet that is wholy unnecessary." Penelope tried to decline.

"Yes well I find I may have more need for you than you of me. Three of my children will not be there. Francesca has decided to stay with my sister Winnie this summer and you know of Colin and Daphne. I fear I may be suffering from an empty nest." Violet would try a little guilt.

"Your nest is hardly empty. I would be delighted to join your family this summer." Penelope smirked at her and ultimately agreed.

"Well then we will leave for Aubrey Hall in a week. If you need more time to get everything in order I am sure Eloise would not mind staying with one of her brothers to wait with you." Violet said.

"No ma'am I should be more than ready in a week. I will try to have some things packed early to go with your things."

With that Violet inclined her head. Anthony looked at Penelope questioning everything once again.

"Is it okay for me to join your family at Aubrey Hall?" She asked.

"Of course it is Penny." Anthony answered softly. "I look forward to beating you in Pall Mall." He grinned mischievously at her.

"Oh who knows I may be a natural." She grinned right back. "Well let me make haste. There is much to be done before next week." Penelope turned from Anthony and walked to her home. She had a feeling this summer would change her life and she could not help but be overwhelmingly excited. Penelope felt like this was the start of something new

The Bridgertons plus one young Miss Penelope Featherington descended upon Aubrey Hall for the season. It was no great feat convincing her mother to allow her to go to Aubrey Hall. She was too busy trying to find a man for Prudence.

As it were many of the Bridgertons did their own things while at Aubrey Hall. Anthony was quite busy checking in with his tenants, Violet with managing the estate (and secretly trying to plan for chances for Anthony to woo Penelope), Benedict was out painting, and Eloise was generally trying to avoid her mother. This left Penelope often alone with the two youngest.

Penelope had to admit she loved them to pieces. Hyacinth let her braid and play with her hair as long as Penelope returned the favor. Gregory loved talking about books he has read and things he is learning. Penelope encouraged his excitement on the topics he enjoys even when she does not understand.

Penelope finally understood what it is to have a younger sibling. She never had that opportunity. Penelope knew her mother struggled having Penelope. Penelope was a large baby. Her mother fell pregnant a few years later she unfortunately lost the pregnancy. To hear her mother talk about it she could care less but when she speaks of it you can see it in her eyes, Portia Featherington missed the child that she never knew. She knew her mother and father had names picked out. If it was a girl they decided on Felicity for a girl or Feagan for a boy. Both names mean joy. As both parents knew this would be their last baby. They lost her little sibling and she would never experience that feeling naturally, but here now she could not imagine a better feeling.

On the rare days that Gregory and Hyacinth were busy Penelope was asked to do different things. On one particularly sunny day, Benedict invited Penelope for a picnic specifically so he could draw her. He explained that while he loved drawing his family it feels disingenuous since they all look so similar.

"Honestly, it is like drawing myself with longer hair and breasts, or younger. Mother and father were very faithful and father's genetics are very strong." Benedict joked.

"I guess I can understand that." Penelope responded. "May I bring my work or would my movements disturb you.

"No Pen by all means. I am assuming you are writing to my brother?" Benedict knows how she has felt previously and is also aware of Anthony's feelings he would hate for anyone to get hurt.

"Yes, well that is part of it. I am also writing to Marina. She is near and I would like to visit sometime this season. And I do not know if you have ever noticed but Colin is quite the correspondent. The way he describes the places he has been. It is all too real. One can almost picture it. I am saving his letters in case he ever decides to publish them." Penelope's upfront honesty threw Benedict off balance.

"You truly mean that?" Benedict asked.

"Yes of course I do. Listen to this, he just wrote to me from Cyprus. 'The weather here is unreal Penelope. Think of the most sunny day you can imagine then imagine a cool breeze blowing. Similar to that time we had a promenade and I fed the ducks but I digress. The food here is the best I have ever had. The different combinations and sauces. The deserts it is all so amazing.' Do you see what I mean? I know exactly what he means. It is so sunny where one might imagine that it would be hot but it is unexpectedly not."

"Wow Pen, I did not know this about my brother. May I read some of his letters?" Benedict asked, settling his items down around himself. Penelope thought it over. There was a part that was a little salacious but she had asked for everything. She decided Benedict could be trusted. He read and she could pinpoint the moment he read what was inappropriate.

"'There are many other sites to enjoy here. While the scenery is quite beautiful I must admit that the people here are just as much. There is a lack of propriety that I find most refreshing. I will not scandalize you with the more salacious details just be aware I am taking your advice and living.'" Benedict finished, "Penelope does Colin often write to you like this?"

"Yes. I mean this is how we talk as well." Penelope tilted her head not really understanding what Benedict's concern was. She was worried because Colin mentioned beautiful people he did not specify sex when determining who was attractive. Colin knew well enough that Penelope would not judge him if he found himself attracted to another man. "What do you think Colin and I talk about usually? Colin gossips like an old maid. If I did not know any better I might think he is Lady Whistledown." Penelope said with a little chuckle.

Benedict just blinked at her he did not know what to say to that. "Well" is what he decided on. "Have you written him back?"

"Not yet, no. That is one of the things I am working on." Penelope answered. "Would you like me to pass along a message?"

"Yes. Please let him know he can pass along any of the salacious details to me if he so chooses."

"Ooohhhh will you then tell me?" Penelope practically begged.

"Absolutely not." Benedict firmly stated. "Are you mad? Among other reasons Anthony would have me drawn and quartered."

"Oh like you all were not doing worse at my age." She gave him a look that led him to believe that she knew all of his secrets.

"Well yes but there is one key difference… I am a man." She knew he had a point but it did not signify.

"How does a woman come to be with child?" She asked suddenly. She knew that this question made him uncomfortable when Eloise asked him during the season. She really just wanted answers.

"Jesus christ what is with you and my sister?" Benedict blurted.

"It is only natural that we are curious and concerned." Penelope tried to explain. "It is our sex's burden yet we are told nothing. On top of that we believed one must be married but then we were proven wrong. We are both just concerned that something may happen and we will not be able to prevent it."

Benedict had to admit that she had a point. "Allow me to speak to my brother. Perhaps I could find you some kind of reading material and then perhaps we may find you someone you may ask questions to. I know it can be quite embarrassing to talk to your mother and my mother cannot be much less embarrassing." Penelope opened her mouth to argue that he could simply tell her now. "Allow me to speak with Anthony first please. I like my body in one piece. Please."

Penelope nodded her head and returned to her correspondence.

Chapter 2: Pall Mall

Summary:

"Oh do not worry your pretty little head."

"So you think I am pretty?"

Chapter Text

The day came for their first Pall Mall match. Hyacinth and Gregory were again being excluded.

"I am so sorry. There are not enough balls." Anthony tried to explain. To his younger siblings. "There are only enough for myself, Benedict, Daphne, Eloise, and Simon. We are just lucky that Penny does not want to play and Colin is not here."

"It is ok. I have something more fun planned."

"Penny-" Anthony started. He could tell that gleam in her eye spelled trouble for him.

"Oh do not worry your pretty little head."

"So you think I am pretty?" Anthony grinned flirtatiously. Penelope just rolled her eyes and sauntered away. "I promise I will order another set soon."

•~~~~•~~~~•~~~~•~~~~•~~~~•~~~~•~~~~•

Anthony was not expecting betrayal.

"Where is it?" Anthony growled. They were on the pitch but the mallet. The mallet of death was missing.

"Brother I assure you I have no idea. It was here earlier when Pen was helping me get the stuff." Eloise said.

"Penelope!"

"You called Lord Bridgerton?" Penelope said with faux innocence.

"Penny," Anthony took a calming breath "Do you know where the black mallet is?"

"Oh you mean this?" Penelope said, producing the mallet from behind her. Anthony's youngest siblings were holding back laughter.

"Yes!" Oh that growl did things to her.

"Oh well you know I think Benedict should have it." Ben went running toward her. Not willing to let Penelope change her mind. "Crush him." She told him with a smirk.

"Oh yes your majesty. I am ever your loyal servant." Benedict bowed with a twinkle in his eye.

"Penelope!" Came the twin shouts from Eloise and Anthony.

"That is what you get for not letting Greg and Hy play now. We have more fun things to do. Crush them Ben. Come along."

"The children can play if they fish the balls out of the lake." Anthony yelled after them. Penelope paused and turned to look at Anthony. Her face was a bit stormy.

"Of course Lord Bridgerton. I will be sure to keep my favorite Bridgertons thoroughly entertained." Anthony winced at his title. Oh he was most definitely going to pay for this. Was it odd that he was attracted to this side of Penelope? It was certainly dangerous.

Needless to say Anthony could not focus. His game most certainly suffered for it.

Chapter 3: Pen makes a discovery

Our favorite trio gets up to no good.

Chapter Text

———————MEANWHILE———————

"Ok since we already put a fish in El's bed. Now we gotta get back at Anthony." Penelope snickered. "How would you suggest we proceed?"

"We could just cause a nuisance." Gregory suggested.

"We could move stuff in his study. Just a little bit." Hyacinth giggled.

"Perfect. Where is his study?" Penelope asked.

"Oh you did not know. It is the room connected to his." Gregory said matter of factly.

"The real problem is how we get in."

"Do you both promise not to tell?" Penelope said as they walked up to the room. They nodded. She pulled a pin out of her hair and went to work. In just over a minute she had the door open.

"Penelope, respectfully you are too good for my brothers, marry me right now please." Gregory pleaded.

"You have got to teach me that."

"I generally agree with you Greg but you are just a little young. Hy maybe when you are older." Penelope reasoned. "Now I will shuffle his desk you work on the books Greg you move the furniture."

Penelope made her way to the desk. She sat at Anthony's chair and opened the top right drawer. The one most commonly used by right handed people like Anthony Bridgerton. This would be where important stuff was Penelope thought. She was certainly not prepared to find a ring box and a license to marry. Already signed and filled out. With Anthony's name. And hers. Her name on a marriage license with Anthony Bridgerton's name in the groom's place. Anthony had secured a license. Why would he? They were not even. Were they? Anthony had sent flowers. He danced with her often. He bought her stuff. Oh, Penelope thought, they were courting.

"Oh" Penelope gasped.

"What?" Gregory moving toward her.

"Nothing. Nothing at all, I just stubbed my toe." Penelope looked up. They had thoroughly rearranged the room. She giggled. "Ok. Let us go sit like the truly innocents that we are. Your siblings will be in soon."

And so they sat and had lemonade and biscuits. When Anthony came stomping in covered in mud. Hyacinth and Gregory openly laughed. Anthony just glared at them. The rest of the family followed close behind Benedict looking the most proud.

"We have biscuits and lemonade. I asked them to get a tea service ready a little while ago. Anthony, maybe go clean up." Anthony just grumbled as he stomped out of the room. His siblings plus his brother-in-law burst into laughter.

"I can hear you!" Came the loud angry voice of Anthony. The laughter stopped for a moment.

"What happened? Ben, if we have to deal with him in such a state you better have won."

"Oh I did." Benedict then proceeded to spin the tale of Anthony's downfall. "Anyway I would not worry about a grumpy Anthony in your presence."

"And what exactly is that supposed to mean?" Penelope asked.

"Oh Penelope it is nothing. Do not worry about it. Just sit over there and do something adorable." Benedict said. "Anthony will be happy to be in your presence. Now come here." Benedict moved her to sit in good light so he could draw her.

"You just sit there look pretty and read your book. Anthony will come back, see you and be fine." Benedict instructed.

"Oh I doubt that." Gregory said. Hyacinth and Penelope started giggling.

"What does that mean?" Eloise asked.

"Nothing!" Gregory, Hyacinth, and Penelope said.

At that precise moment Anthony walked in to the room. Looking extremely grumpy.

"Told you." Penelope whispered to Benedict.

That caught Anthony's attention. The grumpy face Anthony was wearing disappeared into the brightest smile Penelope has ever seen on Anthony's face.

"Oh!" Penelope exclaimed shocked.

"Told you." Benedict sing-song at her.

"Told who what now?" Anthony asked without removing his eyes from Penelope.

"Nothing." Penelope said. "It is nothing. What are we to do with the rest of our day?"

"Considering it is may rain soon perhaps we may play a card game or two. But I suppose it shall be indoor activities." Anthony answered.

"I am sure there are other more exciting indoor activities you two could be doing." Benedict mumbled.

"Benedict!" Daphne, Anthony, and Penelope said scandalized.

"Apologies, I should be leaving. Miss Featherington. Always a pleasure. Family." With that Benedict nodded and scurried from the room. Whatever they had planned he wanted nothing to do with it.

Chapter 4: Just some Bridgerton convos

Summary:

Anthony just sat silently.

"No." Daphne gasped.

"Anthony no." Simon chuckled.

Chapter Text

Penelope sat with Anthony in relative silence. She was pretending to read a book all the while thinking about interactions with Anthony over the last season. When would he have decided she was the one he wanted? As a wife, a Viscountess, the mother of his- Oh God when had he wanted to make children with her. She blushed deeply.

"My whatever could you be reading that gets that reaction?" Anthony asked in a husky whisper.

"I-i a-am not thinking of anything. I-i just it is hot. Are you not hot? It is hot. I am going to go for a walk. Hyacinth, Gregory, you want to walk with me?"

"Yes!" They were both so enthusiastic. Penelope had to get away from Anthony. She had to think and breathe for a moment.

"Let us go then." Penelope said. Hastening her walk out the door.

As they left, Anthony looked toward Simon who was quietly playing with his sister's hair as she laid in his lap.

"What was that?" Anthony asked.

"You were laying it on quite thick there Ant." Simon answered, trying to be diplomatic.

"Yes Ant you must remember, Penelope is the wallflower," Daphne sat up knowing this would develop into an argument if she was not clear. "Whether she should be or not Penelope is not used to attentions. You know how handsome you are, add on to that, that you are caring, considerate, and frankly a good father and it is no wonder Penelope is feeling overwhelmed. Have you asked her to allow you to court her yet?"

Anthony just sat silently.

"No." Daphne gasped.

"Anthony no." Simon chuckled.

"You cannot honestly sit here and tell me you are prepared to ask for her hand and yet she does not even know you are courting her. Anthony."

"Well she should know by now. I dance with her. I never dance." Anthony said quickly. "I bought her that dress. And I send her flowers and chocolates. A few times I have even sent her books. She should know."

"Anthony, you need to ask her. By the end of the day." Simon commanded.

Anthony nodded. "Yes I know. I need to look at some books. And then I will go speak with her."

With that Anthony made his way to his study.

•~~~~•~~~~•~~~~•~~~~•~~~~•~~~~•~~~~•

Meanwhile Penelope was walking outside with Gregory and Hyacinth.

"Are you and Anthony courting?" Gregory asked. He had the confidence of the 4th born son.

"That is inappropriate to ask Gregory, but he is right, when are you going to be our new sister?" Hyacinth sternly told Gregory then questioned Penelope.

"I-i do not know how to answer that."

"What do you mean you do not know how to answer? Are you courting, yes or no?" Hyacinth asked with an overly important air.

"Formally no."

"Meaning?" Gregory asked.

"Meaning that Anthony has not asked me." Penelope was sick of these children asking questions. She had not thought about this and now she was thinking of everyone she has been in a room with Anthony, every gift he has sent, every dance, and ball, and promenade. She was looking back and she thinks he was courting her.

Anthony paid for her sister Phillipa's dowry. Even with Lady Whistledown money she could not afford that. Of course she was thinking about her alter ego right now and how she would most definitely have to tell him and by extension his family. Oh God how would Anthony respond. El would be mad at first but would be proud. Colin would be jealous, definitely jealous. She knows not how the others would respond.

"Penelope, you are looking pale. Do you need to sit down?" Hyacinth asked.

"Yes I believe I do. I will go sit in the garden. How about you go back inside with your siblings." Penelope explained.

Penelope walked to the edge of the garden and sat on a stone bench for a breather. These Bridgertons were going to kill her.

"Shit!" He said loudly to himself. Anthony ran out of his office. No wonder she was acting so strange with him. She had seen. Anthony ran down the stairs.

Anthony walked into his office and immediately knew something was wrong. It was not right. His furniture while still upright was not in the right place. He could tell by looking at his books they were not placed correctly. This must have been the payback Penelope had planned with Hy and Greg.

Oh no, his desk. He rushed over to his desk. To a naked eye it would seem like nothing was wrong. That just was not true. The drawer was left partially open something that Anthony would never do. He looked. The license and ring were still there but they were definitely touch.

"Shit!" He said loudly to himself. Anthony ran out of his office. No wonder she was acting so strange with him. She had seen. Anthony ran down the stairs.

•~~~~•~~~~•~~~~•~~~~•~~~~•~~~~•~~~~•

"Come on Hy. If we get the balls from the lake we can play next time." Gregory begged his sister.

"You go in and throw them to me. You have no idea how difficult wet dresses are." Hyacinth declared.

"Fine, that works." Gregory took off his shoes and his vest. Believe it or not all clothes are terrible when wet.

Gregory proceeded to go in the water looking for the balls. He found one. The purple one by the looks of it.

"Found one. Here." Gregory called throwing the ball. "I think I feel another. It's stuck."

"Greg be careful!" Hyacinth hollered she had a bad feeling. He did not come back up. It felt like an eternity he still did not come up.

"PENELOPE!!!!" Hyacinth screamed. "Penelope someone help!"

"Hyacinth what is wrong." Penelope came running up.

"Greg is in the water, he has not come up." Penelope's head whipped to where she could see splashing.

"Go get your brothers. Go now." Penelope ordered as she ran to the water. Hyacinth took off running to the house yelling the whole way.

Penelope had no time to think she just jumped right in. Making her way to Greg. She found him easily. He was not moving and his foot was stuck in the muddy ground. Penelope freed his foot. And started towards the shore all the while praying. This family would be destroyed without Gregory. Please God do not take him.

"Alright Greggy. We are almost there. Your family will be here soon, you need to be awake for that."

Penelope pulled hime to shore. She read in a book about breathing into someone's mouth to save them from drowning. She tried that.

"Come on Greg. Come on." Penelope kept breathing for him till he started coughing water and then he started sobbing. Penelope pulled him into her chest and rocked him. "Shh Gregory you are ok now. It is ok your brothers and mother are coming. I see them now." She continued rubbing his back.

"Gregory!" Anthony yelled. "Penelope is he-"

"Mama!!" Gregory sobbed. Gregory leaped for his mother as she crashed to the ground next to Penelope.

"Anthony, he is breathing. Did you call for the doctor?" Penelope asked not taking her eyes off of Gregory and his mother.

"Simon is getting him." Anthony could not stop watching his brother. His first baby. He almost died.

Penelope let out a violent shiver. "Pen are you ok?" Anthony asked, taking his eyes off of his brother. She nodded but something was clearly wrong. "Ben can you help mother and Greg up to the house?" Benedict nodded.

"Come here Gregory. Mama will be right next to us. You are just too heavy for her to carry. I will give you back once we are there I promise." Benedict coaxed his brother out of his mother's arms.

Violet jumped to Penelope. "Thank you thank you thank you."

"Lady Bridgerton it was just."

"It was not nothing silly girl. You saved my baby's life. It was everything." Violet said sternly. But quickly followed her sons.

"Penelope what is wrong?" Anthony asked.

"I cannot breathe. My dress is too tight and I cannot breathe." She had tears forming in her eyes.

"Ok. Ok ummm I-i can undo the dress and your stays?" She nodded. "And I will give you my coat. Our servants are very discreet and none will say anything especially after that."

She said nothing, just concentrated on breathing.

"Anthony," she asked, "Are you courting me?"

He laughed. "You saved my brother's life literally and your first question is if we are courting."

"I believe people call it a shock. When someone is not dealing with a situation appropriately. Anyway, my question."

"Yes Pen, I am courting you." He said with a little smile.

"As a gift may I ask for something." She paused and waited for his response. "I would like two new Pall Mall sets."

He laughed. She laughed. They laughed into tears as they held one another. Until a crack of thunder shook them.

"Yes dear. Let us make haste to the house." Anthony responded. Helping Penelope to her feet. They held each other as they walked up to the house. Penelope with Anthony's too large coat over her shoulders.

By the time they reached the house it was chaos.

"Everyone stop!" Anthony commanded. "Now, is the doctor here yet?" He asked the footman, John.

"Not yet sir. He should be here soon though."

"Very well. Can we have two baths prepared, one for Miss Featherington and one for Gregory. Not too hot." Anthony asked the maids as they made their way to do as they were asked.

"Ben, please take Gregory to his room. Mother you as well. Eloise, can you attend to Penelope?" At Eloise's confused look. "I need to attend to Hyacinth."

"She is hiding. I cannot find her." Eloise responded diplomatically.

"El. She is in shock. She said that Greg was not breathing. If she randomly starts crying, be gentle. Also her dress is undone. Nothing untoward happen but I would beg for your discretion." He whispered to his sister. She nodded her response and guided Penelope upstairs to her room.

Chapter 6: Hiding

Summary:

Anthony finds Hyacinth.

Chapter Text

Anthony walked to his study. He was thinking sbout Hyacinth and where she could be hiding. He figured if she was like him she would be hiding under his desk. Sure enough upon entering his study he heard sniffling.

He walked around his desk and sat in the floor.

"Hy, come here." Anthony whispered. She just sobbed. "Hy can you look at me so I know you are ok?"

She looked up and his heart shattered. Her face was swollen by the tears.

"Anthony is-is h-he d-d-d-dead?"

"Oh sweet Hyacinth. No no he is not. He is fine. He is in his room waiting for a bath and the doctor." Anthony reassured her. "Hy he is fine I am sure he wants to see you."

"No he does not. I would not help him. He went in so we could play next time. He went back in for the other ball so I could play. It is all my fault he" her sobs shook her. Anthony pulled her into his lap and rocked her.

"Trust me when I say this. He loves you and would do it again. Do you understand me? But I know he wants to see you. Who is the first person he asks for when he is sick?"

"Me." Hyacinth sniffled.

"Yes. And he just had a big scare and he needs his brave sister with him."

"But I am not brave." Hyacinth cried.

"You are brave. You got help. It is the most brave thing in the world to ask for help. And you asked Miss Penelope. That is the best person to ask for help. She has helped our family so much this season. Did you know that?" Anthony explained. Hyacinth shook her head. "Well all you need to know is that she helped our family a lot. She is ok and so is Gregory but I know he wants to see you. So how about we grace him with our presence?"

"Ok." Hyacinth stood and dried her tears. Anthony picked up his youngest sister although she was much too old to carry on his back. Hyacinth giggled and frankly Anthony would take all the back pain in the world

Chapter 7: Anthony and Pen talk

Summary:

"Oh" Anthony whispered. "I-Penelope you are the most incredible woman did you know that?"

Notes:

Hello all I'm back. It's been wild I'll have more information at the bottom.

Chapter Text

Anthony went looking for Penelope after checking on his brother. Gregory yelled in shock and delight at Hyacinth coming in. They promptly curled together and bickered. Anthony left them in the watchful eye of his mother.

Anthony knocked on the door. He did not wait for an answer. Honestly he was so close to losing his composure he could not care about decorum.

"Penelope." Anthony said shakily.

"Anthony?" Penelope said from behind a screen, voice followed by a splash.

"I am so sorry please excuse my impropriety." He said walking to the door.

"Anthony, wait." Penelope paused. "Maria, can you go watch the door? No one will look for you here Anthony and I do not need assistance." She would never be so bold but she could trust Anthony and she trusted Maria with her life.

Maria walked to the door politely not looking at Anthony. As the door closed behind Maria the last hold that Anthony had broke into a sob.

"Anthony?" Penelope asked worriedly from the other side of the screen.

"I am okay. I am. They are I know that you know." Anthony was working himself up into hysteria. Something many have never seen before. "I can see Ben and Daph. Little Hy and El. I just saw Greg and he was laughing and yelling with Hy. So why do I not feel settled? Why do I feel this dread, like something is wrong, Pen?"

"Anthony I wish I could hug you right now. Here come here." Penelope said trying to maneuver herself.

"What Pen you are- this is already improper."

"Anthony I mean to the edge of the screen. It is close enough you could hold my hand." Penelope explained.

"Oh" Anthony whispered. He moved to the edge of the screen and reach for Penelope's hand. "I-Penelope you are the most incredible woman did you know that?"

"As I always say I know but you could stand to tell me more often." Penelope said with a laugh.

Anthony laughed then he sobbed again.

"Pen, I could have lost him. I could have lost you." Anthony sobbed out. "I know our friendship, our courtship has not been going on long but if anything happened to you I-"

"Anthony, shhhh, I am well. The most dangerous part of the day is over." Penelope soothed him. "I will finish up here and join you to check on Greg. I will only be a moment. If you can get Maria."

"Ok." Penelope listened as Anthony picked himself off the ground. "I- Penelope there is nothing I could ever do to repay this debt for my family. I would marry you right now but I do not believe you are ready for that. But know I am forever indebted to you and I will be ready when you are."

Anthony walked to the door to invite Maria back into the room. Maria hurried behind the screen and raised a questioning brow at Penelope.

"Oh hush. He needed a good cry, that is all." Penelope whispered in response.

"Very well Miss." Maria responded dubiously. "I believe we should have a conversation I know your mother will not have with you."

Maria helped Penelope dress in a more relaxed day dress. This one did not require stays or a corset which was all well as her stays were soaked. Perhaps they could go into town and buy some underclothes.

"Thank you for your assistance and discretion, Maria." Anthony said once they walked out of the dressing room. "I apologize for my impropriety but I assure you Miss Featherington is still very much intact. I just lost my head. I beg for your discretion on this matter and the emotional reaction I-"

"Lord Bridgerton. My brother died in the crib when I was 8. He was my favorite thing in the world. My world shifted the day he died. If you are feeling even half of what I felt that day I cannot blame you for any of your behavior. I would like to remind you as I think you need reminding. Mr. Gregory is still alive. He is down the hall and he is already fighting with young Miss Hyacinth. Treasure that."

"I-'' Anthony did not know how to respond. He nodded in response and made his way to the door with Penelope swooning over the respect Anthony paid her friend and favorite maid.

Notes:

So my dad has been in and out of the hospital. I had to put my cat down while my dad and brother were both in the hospital. That was the beginning of August. My dad has been back another time. My brother had surgery. They are both doing well. My grandmother died which was a big strain due to a lot.

Anyway I say all of that to say this Fuck August.

Chapter 8: Let them explain

Summary:

"Penelope please tell me someone has called you as such before?" Anthony asked her, taking her arm to guide her to Gregory's room. She shrugged. "Dear lord, I swear I will try to let you know how wonderful you look everyday."

Chapter Text

Anthony waited for Penelope to be ready. She came out in a lovely light green day dress with her hair down and still a little wet.

"You look beautiful." Anthony said in wonder.

Penelope looked a little shocked at being called beautiful.

"Penelope please tell me someone has called you as such before?" Anthony asked her, taking her arm to guide her to Gregory's room. She shrugged. "Dear lord, I swear I will try to let you know how wonderful you look everyday."

"Anthony, that is very kind but unnecessary. May I ask a question now?" He nodded his assent. "Why did you not ask or tell me you wish to court me. I do not even understand why you wish to court me."

"In short the reason is I frankly forgot. Between your sister and mine getting married. The whole thing with Marina and my brother. I just forgot to ask. I figured you understood considering all the gifts I got for you."

"I will admit that it should have been fairly obvious but then again you do not spend much time with me. Why is that?" Penelope asked still deeply confused.

"That is a little more complicated." He paused and they sat on a little bench in the hall just before the children's rooms. "In truth, maybe it is not so complicated. I do not and did not want anyone to try to use your sisters or family as a way to get closer to mine. Mr. Finch already wanted to marry your sister which made her union easy. She just needed a dowry. I can make that up in a year."

"It will be paid at the beginning of the season. My investments are doing very well." Penelope interrupted very sternly.

"You are going to have to tell me how you did that someday. But as for paying me back, move it on to Prudence then. I want to make you my wife for many reasons, some not so selfish and some entirely too selfish. I cannot do that knowing someone may try to weasel their way into your family through your sister just to gain a connection to me and mine." Anthony told her earnestly.

"Well then I believe you should talk to your mother to help find a match for my sister. Your mother is the best matchmaker in all of the ton. She puts the queen to shame." Penelope spoke with finality, trusting that Violet Bridgerton would be the one to bring a match to the table for Prudence.

"Of course. Now should we go see Gregory and the doctor for yourself?" Anthony stood and offered his hand to her.

Penelope accepted his hand. It did not escape either's notice that they did not let go. They held hands as they walked through the door of Gregory's room.

"And that is why we should be allowed to play next time, mother!" Gregory told his mother passionately.

"Well it is so wonderful to see my favorite Bridgerton man feeling so much better." Penelope said upon entering.

"Penny!" Gregory and Hyacinth shouted at the same time. Greg trying to get up to hug her. Completely missing the look Violet was giving them for holding hands.

"Stay there, I am coming." She made her way across the room after releasing Anthony's hand which did not go unnoticed by him this time. She climbed up the other side of the bed. "Come on Hy." Penelope gestured for Hyacinth to climb up too.

"We were just talking about why I should be allowed to play Pall Mall." Gregory explained.

"I see." Penelope paused looking at Anthony. "Do you remember earlier you two asked me a question? Do you remember what it was?"

"I asked you if my blind brother was courting you yet." Hyacinth explained with a little disappointment in her voice. "Is he?"

Penelope looked to Anthony who seemed to be a little shocked by how excited his younger siblings were at the idea of him courting Penelope. He nodded to her.

"Yes we are," Penelope had to pause at their loud cheers, "but, we are keeping it private. Do you understand what that means?"

"Why do you not want people to know? Are you ashamed of us?" Hyacinth asked emotionally.

"Are you ashamed it is Anthony? Because I fully believe you could do so much better if you could just wait a few more years." Gregory suggested earnestly.

Penelope laughed with Violet. Anthony looked on affronted.

"No, I am not ashamed of you lot or Anthony. And Greg I have no doubt you will make a woman very happy one day. No it is more complicated. You know how there are marriages that are not love matches?" She watched the children nod. "Well, while I feel I could fall for your brother there are people who could use the fact that my sister is unmarried to get a connection to this family. Phillipa is very happy with Mr. Finch she loves him truly. But some man might see your brother courting me and use my sister Prudence to marry and have a connection to the Viscount which I am now realizing would also connect them to the Duke and Duchess as well." Penelope looked up at Anthony and then to Violet.

"When the time is right I would love to be a Bridgerton but I agree with Anthony my sister deserves happiness too. Perhaps you and Lady Danbury could help with that?" Penelope enquired.

"You know I have always wanted to host a country house party." Violet said feeling very pleased that her son has such a woman dedicated to him and family. They will make great parents.

"But I digress. Yes we are courting and as you know courting comes with gifts. Pallmall comes with eight mallets and balls. I have requested as a courting gift that I get two sets of mallets and balls. That means we all play and one day all the spouses can too."

"Yay!" Hyacinth and Gregory screamed out.

"Well I think that has been enough excitement for the day. What do you say to dinner? Gregory has the doctor been to see you yet?"

"Yes, sir." Gregory answered politely. "He said I need rest but I must also get around and move. He suggested something vigorous like running or riding. So I do not get lung sick."

"We can go for a ride in the morning if it is not raining." Anthony promised. "We will meet you downstairs for dinner.

Chapter Text

It has been about two weeks since the incident and frankly a quite wet summer. Outdoor activities were limited so pall mall was blessedly not an option.

What was concerning Penelope was Anthony's rather odd behavior. He had been looking less rested and more haggard recently. Penelope could see it in his eyes when he quickly entered a room where herself and any of his siblings were. For a moment he seemed at peace and would then have concern in his brow. Penelope could take a guess at what it was. She had no doubt it was Anthony's fatherly concern for his siblings.

Penelope had already penned a letter to his three missing siblings requesting they come to Aubrey Hall. She did not want to overly worry Francesca or Daphne so she left out the near drowning and just expressed a need for more women around to help sooth Eloise as she is to go through her first year out.

She did tell Colin the truth. In simplicity he was her best friend and what she once believed to be her soulmate. And perhaps Colin is in the platonic sense. He understood her in a way that no had until Anthony who understood her as a woman as well.

So she wrote to Colin and explained what happened. She told him everything. How she pulled Gregory out of the water, how he was not breathing and she pushed on his chest until he spit up water. She explained her panic when she could not catch her breath and Anthony grace in undoing her dress. She told him of the inappropriate moment while she was in the bath. She was quick to ensure he knew that no liberties were taken and his brother was still well and truly a gentleman. Then she explained her concern. Anthony was not eating much and was sleeping even less and she knew it was because he was unsettled. He needed to see that his siblings, his family were safe. She explained to Colin that perhaps he would enjoy coming home for a bit as Daphne and Francesca were on their way. She was quick to tell him they did not know of the incident.

Penelope subtly told the staff to prepare for the three missing Bridgertons and the Duke who would no doubt be joining. She explained to the staff that she was unsure of when they would be there but no doubt they would come eventually.

•~~~~•~~~~•~~~~•~~~~•~~~~•~~~~•~~~~•

Approximately a week later Daphne and Simon arrived. Daphne explained that she missed the noise but winked to Penelope. It was a joy for Penelope to see Anthony's stress visibly relieve itself.

But there was a tinge of worry always on Anthony's face until finally a month after Gregory's near drowning Francesca and Colin ride up in the same carriage.

"What are you doing home? I thought you had this big tour." Anthony asked with a smile.

"I did but I was a little home sick and mother wrote about the house party so I figured I should join in for a little bit." Colin made an excuse. His mother did tell him but that was not his reason for being home.

"Ah yes the infamous house party to find Prudence Featherington a husband so I can finally properly court Penelope." Anthony said a little wistfully.

"I am sorry WHAT?" Francesca said from behind Colin.

"FRANNIE!" Anthony truly looked like he would cry at any moment. Likely he did by burying his face into Francesca's hair. "What are you doing home? I thought you were not coming back yet."

"I decided to join Colin when he passed through. I miss the noise. And I miss you lot." Francesca explained.

"We do not have anything ready for you. Your rooms-"

"Are ready and waiting." Penelope said behind him.

"You- I- Penelope I swear to you one day-"

"Yes yes you will make it up to me. There are some books in town I had my eye on. Perhaps we can go into town this week." Penelope suggested with a gleam in her eye.

"Which brings me back to what?" Francesca asks, interrupting the heart eyes between the two.

"Oh we can explain over tea which I called for when I noticed Colin's carriage coming this way. So there should be plenty. Colin, Frannie, I would like to speak to you alone afterwards if you are agreeable." Penelope explains.

"Come along, let us go inside." Anthony said, offering his arm to Penelope. "I do not know how you did it but I am eternally grateful." He whispered to Penelope emotion evident in his tone.

"I know." Penelope shot him a grin.

Chapter 10: What it means to be family

Summary:

"So wait. What was this about Anthony courting Penelope? Is she finally going to be my sister?" Francesca asked.

"Well" Penelope started.

"It's complicated." Gregory, Hyacinth, and Anthony all said at once.

Notes:

(See the end of the chapter for notes.)

Chapter Text

They arrived in the sitting room at the same time the tea service arrived.

"Colin. Francesca." In different levels and order from all of the Bridgertons.

"Alright let us sit and have tea and talk." Penelope said. She did not notice the pleased smile on Violet's face. Penelope will make a wonderful Viscountess.

The noise in the room was to be expected. Penelope quite enjoyed the noise.

"So wait. What was this about Anthony courting Penelope? Is she finally going to be my sister?" Francesca asked.

"Well" Penelope started.

"It's complicated." Gregory, Hyacinth, and Anthony all said at once.

"It really is not. We are courting in private. You all know and my family knows but we would like my sister to secure a match." Penelope explained to Francesca.

"We do not want anyone seeing Penelope's attachment to this family and try to use or heaven forbid compromise her sister to receive favor." Anthony continued.

"Which is why we are having a house party to try to find Pru a match. Ben you are friends with her do you know anyone or have anyone in mind?" Penelope asked.

Benedict was friends with Prudence Featherington, when had that happened? Anthony could not recall having ever seen them together but then again there was always Colin or Eloise with Penelope that required their attention.

"Ah well I suppose. Perhaps someone with a simple life? Surely anyone with more than a barony would be too much. I do have some friends from Eton, second sons and military men. Perhaps they would be adequate." Benedict thought aloud.

"If you think they may get along well with Prudence please do invite them." Penelope suggested. "Honestly the longer my sister and I go unwed the more fearful I grow."

"Fearful of what Penelope?" Francesca asked quickly.

"Well I am certain that you all know how my father likes to gamble. He has already gambled away our dowry once. If it was not for Anthony's assistance Phillipa's dowry would not have been paid." At the confused and concerned glances of her audience Penelope continued. "Prudence's dowry is secure. An-and Anthony has already said that he does not need one for me. I would like to secure myself to him before he changes his mind."

"My mind will not be changed. Everyone in this room knows what a perfect Viscountess you will be." Anthony proclaimed.

"Of course. Now if you will excuse me I think I may take a short walk in the garden while you all catch up. I believe that Gregory may need to tell you all about the lake." Penelope looked at Gregory pointedly. "Remember what we talked about. It is important to share our fears with those who love us."

With that Penelope left the family alone to catch up.

•~~~~•~~~~•~~~~•~~~~•~~~~•~~~~•~~~~•

Anthony found Penelope in the garden much sooner than she expected.

"I know what you did." He said coming up behind her joining her on the bench.

"I am certain. I have no clue what you mean." Penelope said innocently.

"Penelope." Anthony breathed her name. A prayer. "You brought my family home so I could be at peace. You knew what I needed and you protected me."

Penelope blushed because what else could she do. "I only did what was right."

"Penelope you did so much more than that. My siblings did not see me deteriorating. My mother is lost in her own storm of grief, guilt, and fear. Greg nor Hy saw me checking on them every night. That was you. You saw a problem and fixes it quietly as you always do."

They sat staring at each other for a minute.

"Penelope, this is entirely inappropriate and you may decline me if you wish." Anthony paused, waiting for her to interrupt. She did not. "May I kiss you."

Like the innocent she was, Penelope gasped. Shocked for many reasons. That any man would want to kiss her. That Anthony wanted to kiss her. That Anthony asked to kiss her. Penelope nodded.

"I would like a verbal acceptance if you can manage that, love." Anthony said, stroking her face. He wanted to kiss her for a while.

Penelope took a deep breath, "Anthony, would you please kiss m-" She was cut off by Anthony's mouth on hers.

It was like nothing she had ever thought of before. She has thought she would be in love. She always assumed it would be Colin. But her first proper kiss as a lady was with the man who loved her completely and whom she found she loved as well.

He bit her bottom lip which earned him a gasp. That was all the opening he needed to delve his tongue into her mouth. She started participating quickly when she realized what she should do.

She was a magnificent dancer and this was just a different kind of dance. Anthony had one hand still cupping her face and the other wound its way into her curls. Penelope's hands were more adventurous as without thought her hands were on his vest pulling, pushing at this point she did not know. She slid a hand up his chest to his hair. She had always wanted to touch his hair. Dislodged his hand from her face she grabbed his hair. She found his hair to be soft and silky. She gave a little tug. The grunt of surprise from him stirred in her stomach something she did not yet understand.

"Penelope" Anthony gasped, pulling away. He quickly jumped away. Pacing across the grass in front of her.

"Anthony I did no-" Penelope quickly started.

"You have done nothing wrong. I know I have not done anything wrong." Anthony interrupted her quickly.

"Then I am not sure I entirely understand. Did I do something wrong?"

"Penelope," He breathed, "you were entirely too perfect. I am a gentleman. You are a genteel lady. Having said that, what was coming about was something that unmarried men and ladies should not do. But also something I will never do with you for the first time outdoors. Especially when my family can find us."

"Oh," Penelope gasped with a blush she asked "but the outdoors are not completely out of option are they?"

"Penelope you have ruined me." Anthony found it hard to control himself.

Penelope giggled and walked up to him. She placed her hands on his shoulders.

"And you Lord Bridgerton have also ruined me. I love you." She told him honestly. "You do not have to say it back, I know you love me too. I have no doubt of that. I never thought I would be blessed to love the man I am to marry but I am pleased it is you." She ran her hands through his hair. Ever the hedonist Anthony leaned into her hands.

"I love you too, Penelope Featherington. In a way I did not know my heart was capable. I have never known a woman like you and I cannot wait to learn all the things about you."

Anthony kissed her cheeks, her eyelids, her forehead, her ears, her nose, her chin, and finally made his way back to her mouth. He kissed her mouth gently as he meant to before. Just small pecks that he did not allow to go deeper.

"I think we will suit just fine. Just do not throw me over for the diamond of next season." Penelope told him.

"Never. Besides, who needs a diamond when I have a ruby most rare." He told her a truth he would never not keep. "Let us rejoin. My family before I well and truly ruin you."

Penelope took his arm and walked back toward the house to their family.
