Chapter 1: Chapter One
Chapter Text
With the departure of cousin Jack, Penelope's mother had managed to put the scandal in their favor. Which explained the reason that this very minute Penelope found herself entwined from the arms with Philippa as they took a promenade alongside her older sister and mother. She listened as her sister went on about her marriage, Penelope was truly happy for her, the only issue was whenever her sister visited, Mr. Finch was all she spoke about.
"Pen!" A familiar voice spoke her name loudly from in front of her, prying her eyes away from Philippa, Penelope beamed as she noticed her best friend bounded her way.
Thankfully, the two friends were able to talk it out about her secret identity reveal. She understood how her friend felt hurt and betrayed about her not saying anything and basically allow her to go on a hunt about finding her identity, but Eloise had also realized where Penelope was coming from when keeping it a secret for so long, how she took on Lady Whistledown in hopes of changing society but also to build her own confidence up as Penelope.
In all honesty, their little fall out made their friendship ten times stronger. She would not know where she would be without the brunette, but will forever be grateful.
Penelope gently detached herself from her sister and met Eloise half way, now noticing that the whole Bridgerton family were there, she could see Gregory and Hyacinth weaving through the trees about a meter away from the group with Colin and Francesca keeping an eye on them, Violet and Daphne were between Anthony and Benedict with one arm each looped with the boys.
"Penelope, It's lovely to see you again." Violet said to the young woman, she always adored the redhead ever since she was little, she thought of her as one of her own. "You as well Lady Bridgerton." Said words earned her a stern look sent her way as the older woman made polite conversation with her mother, which she smiled at. Violet had been very persistent with getting Penelope to call her Violet. Unfortunately she has not achieved in sinking it into her head quite yet.
Eloise teasingly tutted from next to her, "My dear friend, I'm certain one of these days mama will kidnap you simply to drill in your head about not being so proper with her." She grinned while she watched Daphne and Francesca try to make easy talk with her sisters, "She can try, but considering I look up to your mother, it will be a long time before I will accept speaking to her with informal titles."
"What about the rest of us then? Do we get formal terms as well?" A shiver ran down her back at the cool toned voice, she glanced in the direction it had come from to land on the man that has taken capture of her heart since she was sixteen. Coming back to her senses, she smirked, "You are different, I have seen you eat twice the amount of your weight. I also have far too much blackmail on you." Colin's laugh was like a beautiful harmony in her ears, he closed the gap by wrapping her into his embrace. She let herself have this, knowing that he did not feel the same as she did. He loved her but in a friend/family way, her love may not be the same but she is starting to realize that she may be able to get over him if she were to really try.
"Colin, let the poor woman go, you are suffocating her with your coat." A much deeper voice spoke this time, one she was familiar with but only for being around the Bridgertons home, not directly at her like Eloise and Colin's. She pulled away from her tall friend and curtsied.
"Hello Lord Bridgerton, thank you for the save. If I didn't know any better I would think he was trying to strangle me." A fake hurt noise escaped Colin's throat as he dramatically held onto his breast pocket. She laughed quietly when her ears caught the groan from the man before her.
"You are most welcome, after all I think mother would kill me if I didn't rescue you. I also would scold you for calling me such formality but after overhearing your conversation, I worry I would be wasting my breath."
"I Wouldn't be too sure Viscount, unlike your mother I have witnessed some scandalous scenarios amongst you and your brothers." A surprised laugh slipped from between his lips, his wide eyes taking in her teasing ones.
Eloise, having enough at being ignored by her best friend, takes her arm, gently dragging her away from the men. "Okay, stop hogging MY best friend. And Pen, you know better than to use your quick wit on my brothers, I told you they would shut down."
The two laughed as they went, ignoring Colin's protest as they walked alongside the pond in the middle of the park. "With the season coming to an end, what are your plans for during the off season?" Eloise questioned as she watched Penelope brushed her fingertips with the flowers nearby.
"Mama was talking about visiting some relatives, now with cousin Jack gone, mother has been trying her best in finding a sponsor. This relative had made a deal with her which she will tell us when we get there," hey eyes glanced at her mother, sighing when she was too focused on what benedict was saying. " I am worried she might have agreed on something she will not be able to back out if it were to go wrong." her friend nodding, thinking the same when the redhead had finished.
Eloise's face lit up as a brilliant idea came to her, "What if you came to Aubrey Hall with us? Your mother can sort out the sponsors and you wouldn't be in the middle of all the drama. I can have mama send her a personal invite so Lady Featherington can not refuse. You will be with us and will not be stressed about the visit."
Penelope adored Aubrey Hall just as anyone that has visited, and though she knows Violet is still the Lady of house, she knows it is Anthony that got the final word in said invite.
"Only if you ask Anthony first, if he accepts then Violet can send the invitation." The brunette agreed to her terms, already planning on asking her brother once they got back home. "If only mama and Ant were to hear you speak so improper of them when they can not hear. I actually think Mother would cry with joy while brother would most certainly stutter."
The best friends broke into laughter, as their family called them to leave. If they had looked up, all they would have seen were concerned expressions on the others faces as they giggled like crazy.

Chapter Text
"Penelope! Make Haste! We are expected at the Modiste in ten minutes!" Said woman hurried down the stairwell, her soft peach dress smoothed out by her hands as she headed to the carriage.
Her Mother looked her up and down, since cousin Jack, Portia has been allowing her daughters more freedom with their wardrobe. Finally, Penelope saw the nod of approval as she once again focused on scolding Prudence for her hair.
"I got a letter from Violet this morning, you have been invited to join her family at their country home this off season." Penelope kept her attention on her facial expressions for any signs of what her answer could be. Portia let out a breath and locked eyes with her youngest, her lips curved up slightly at the hope shining through those beautiful blue eyes of hers. "I shall accept and send it to her once we return. While you might have been needed, I believe that we will be fine without you this time."
Her smile blinded the woman across her, so bright that she was sure her daughter's mouth would remain in that position. "Oh thank you Mama, I apologize for changing your plans but I really am quite excited to spend time with the Bridgertons!" Nodding Portia continued to watch Penelope as she gazed out the window.
She could notice her body relaxed as she got her answer, the older Featherington couldn't help the small smile that landed on her face, she might not be the mother her youngest wished for but she would be lying if she did not believe that Penelope took after herself in certain aspects. While Penelope had her traits like her kindness, she also had her mother's sharp tongue that's for sure.
She's heard her daughter and Miss Bridgerton talk at balls, while Portia should have spoken to Penelope about using such words in public, she liked the fact that her youngest was able to show her true self with the other woman whenever they're together.
The carriage came to a stop as they arrived at their destination. Portia clapped her hands and exited the vehicle with her daughters not far behind.
"Prudence, with the upcoming season," Portia began, her eyes following Madame Delacroix as she came back with different shades of pink. " And Philippa married off, we will be focusing on you being married off." Prudence's smug expression sent Penelope's way made her scoff softly.
"Mama? Can I Please pick my colors and design for my dresses since it's Prudence that is to marry next?" Portia glanced her way, thinking before she spoke.
"I suppose, just do not choose something that will bring shame on us." Genevieve and Penelope shared a look before the redhead agreed with her mother.
"Come now Miss Featherington, while Lady Featherington chooses Miss Featherington choices let us get started with yours." The women head further into the shop, Penelope gasps at all the beautiful types of fabric and shades. Her hands stroked an emerald silk fabric, nodding as Madam Delacroix placed it to where her pile would be.
A lilac purple, Royal blue and wine red was picked not long after as she asked for day dresses alongside the gowns made in the same color. The Modiste requested if she could pick another shade for her but if it could remain a secret until she was to receive it.
Trusting the woman's taste she allowed it as well with the older woman's choice in the design. After being promised the dresses will be finished before her departure, the Featheringtons left to return home.
With her mother's approval, Penelope raced off the house across the street. The doorman simply opened the door with a smile and pointed to the direction the family was in.
Entering the drawing room, Penelope chuckled at the image in front of her. While Violet and Daphne were seated chattering among themselves with Hyacinth and Gregory on the other couch across from them. What caught her attention was the tug of a war Benedict and Eloise seemed to be having with a book as the remaining brothers helped Benedict overpower Eloise.
"Penelope!" Hyacinth shouted happily as she rushed to hug the woman tightly, Penelope wrapped her arms around the girl while she was led to Violet. She was placed between the younger siblings as she was addressed by the older woman.
"My dear, I presume you must have good news if your expression has anything to do with it." "Yes, my mother has accepted your invitation. While she seemed unsure to begin with, something had caused her to agree." Violet reached for the younger woman's hands, "That is wonderful Penelope, I'm certain that you will thoroughly enjoy yourself this off season." Nodding, Penelope was hugged again by Hyacinth and Gregory before her best friend pulled her away to embrace her.
"Oh Pen, I can not wait for you to stay with us! We are going to have so much fun and you can experience Pall Mall!" Penelope giggled as she left the hug, "I too can not wait, Pall Mall on other hand, I do wish to live till the next season El."
A huff came from behind the bestfriends, "Oh come on Penelope, I don't think we will do any harm to you besides maybe mentally." Benedict started with a teasing grin on his face, Penelope narrowed her eyes. "Is that right? What about my precious book I just saw you pulling at, hmm?" His expression changed quickly, glancing at Eloise for confirmation, Benedict gulped and laughed nervously.
"My apologies Pen, I had thought the book was El's. I can repay it back to you." This time it was Penelope that grinned, "Relax Benedict, I was joking. While I do not believe in playing around with books, you didn't ruin it, therefore there is no need for you to repay me. I would not allow you to do such a thing even if it was ruined." Benedict's grin came back full spin as he gave her a hug as well.
"I keep forgetting how good you are with scaring people with your words." Her breath quickened slightly as she stared at the huge smile on Colin's face. "Although it did not sound like one, I am taking that as a compliment. Plus, the only time you hear me talk like that is normally towards Cressida." Nearly everyone in the room shuttered at the name of the blond woman. Seeing another in her prevision, Penelope faced the last Bridgerton brother and lowered herself slightly.
"Although Eloise asked, I want to thank you Lord Bridgerton for allowing me to stay with you and your family at your home." Anthony smiled politely. "You are welcome Miss Featherington, I do however request you call me Anthony with you spending the off season at Aubrey Hall." She saw the amusement in his eyes as she reluctantly agreed.
"That goes for me as well Penelope." Violet spoke up from her spot. Painting an innocent look on, Penelope looked to the other woman, "But Lady Bridgerton, I have so much respect for you. I would feel like I'm betraying my mother's lessons in being respectful." Laughter roared in the room at the surprised expression on their mother's face. Penelope was shocked herself by the eldest chuckle from next to her, she shook herself out of her small daze when the room quieted. "I will get you to call me Violet by the end of your stay, that I am certain."
Mocking a curtsy, Penelope replied with, "I wouldn't expect any less, my lady."
Shortly after, the laughter returned much louder this time.

Chapter Text
It was time for the Bridgertons and Penelope to depart to Aubrey Hall, Madame Delacroix personally delivered the new dresses to her door. Penelope greeted the woman as she remained home alone besides her staff as her mother and sister had left the day before.
"Thank you Briarly for helping, if you could call in Grace please." The Butler nodded with a smile and went to retrieve the young woman's maid. Grace soon arrived as she helped lay the dresses out. The eight she had asked for were there alongside the one that remained a secret with an additional four. "Madame, are you sure you have the right order? I only ordered nine."
Genevieve chuckled and nodded, "you are right, but I add these last ones as not just a token of our friendship but as well as a thank you for helping my business grow." Her eyesight blurred as she could see the genuine facial expression on the other woman. Instead of responding, the red head bopped her head up and down before taking in the dresses in front of her.
The commissioned dresses were breathtaking, she had no words to describe them besides being absolutely stunning. She took notice of the cuts and little touches the Modiste had done and she couldn't be more happy with how they turned out. The remaining four were simply out of this world, she had never seen anything like them and she had immediately thought about bringing them with her to Aubrey Hall.
There were a total of six ball gowns and seven day dresses. She chose to bring all the day dresses and two ball gowns since Violet had announced a couple of fancy dinners she would be attending during her stay. As well as some of her older commissioned dresses that she has not acquired to wear yet, she was all packed and ready to meet the Bridgertons.
"Thank you Madame Delacroix for these gorgeous gowns, you truly have out done yourself and I couldn't even fathom how to repay you."
Shaking her head, Genevieve placed her hands over hers. "You do not need to repay me anything, I am thrilled you like them so much. When Lady Featherington agreed on you choosing your outfits, I was more than excited to show off your beauty. Please, I believe we are close enough to go by first names." Nodding Penelope embraced the darker woman, "Thank you again Genevieve." The arms around hugged her tighter, "You are most welcome Penelope." Seeing the dressmaker off, Briarly escorted her to the house across from them with her luggage in hand.
The male Bridgertons were already outside, waiting for the women to finish packing. "If you keep scowling like that, I don't believe you'll find a wife with such a look." Benedict, unaware it was her, responded snarky, " That sounds more positive then negative." Penelope hummed, "You're awfully snappy today ain't you Mr. Bridgerton?" That pulled the four from their sleep deprived self. "Penelope! I was unaware it was you." Penelope giggled at the alarmed faces, "Relax, your secret is safe with me,"
She passed them, stopping beside Benedict, she smiled sweetly, "At least I can say I have some dirt on you now if I ever see you try to harm another book in my presence." She entered the home while gleefully hearing the man splutter behind her.
Heading to Eloise's room first, she took in the disaster as all the Bridgerton women were herded close trying to close Eloise's bag. A cheer rang out as they all heard the click of success.
"Let us hurry down, I'm certain not only would the boys be waiting but Penelope may be as well." Eloise Snatched the luggage up only to almost hit her best friend with it as she ran to the door. "Pen! How long have you been there?" Smiling, she moved as the five left the room, "Not long, let us go?" She extended her arm in a gentleman's way causing Eloise to laugh lightly. Dramatically looping arms, the two trail after the others.
Penelope excused herself from the family as she sent Briarly off, "Thank you once again Briarly for your help, take the rest of the season and off season to visit your family. Send my regards to Marie, Henry and Bridget. Oh," She reached into her luggage before it was packed, she handed the older four presents with a jewellery case and small sack of coins, "For the little ones birthdays and also for your wife. The coins are an added bonus. Have a good break and I will see you in a few months."
Briarly accepted the gifts and bowed in gratitude, " Thank you Miss, I will await your return, enjoy yourself." Nodding, she watched to make sure the butler made it safely before turning. Penelope narrowly missed a collision with the eldest son who had appeared behind her.
Before she could apologise, Anthony's voice came first. "That was incredibly nice of you Penelope, do you do that often with your staff?" She waved him off as she stepped back to give some space between the two, "Briarly has been working with my family since I was born, he has been more of a father figure then my own was."
Anthony's eyes ran over her face, he recognized the pain of her father's death that was still hovering over her. He decided to change the subject, "Well, I must say if I did what you did to any of my staff I would most likely get a smack over the head for it. Mrs. Corey is always saying 'I over pay them all'."
Penelope giggled at the mental image of the Bridgertons oldest maid smacking Anthony with the newspaper she always has on her. "We wouldn't want that to happen, you may lose important brain cells from such an injury." Another surprised laugh escaped Anthony, this woman had a habit of getting him when he had his guard down.
"How have I not noticed your quick tongue before? You get me when I least expect it." Anthony said impressively, the woman raised her eyebrow, "Have you forgotten who my best friend is Lord Bridgerton?"
"Back to Lord I see. No, I have not forgotten, however I have not witnessed you talk this way beforehand since you have made it a habit of calling me by my formal title." He spoke with a slight tease in his tone, while she was processing his words, he quietly led her to the carriage. As she accepted his help, she mumbled under her breath something he just caught.
"I'm not the only one that's surprising someone today it seems." Anthony huffed out a small laugh as he closed the door and made his way to the other carriage with a small smile.
The ride to Aubrey Hall went by a lot quicker considering the whole time, the women chatted about anything and anyone. Daphne had explained that Simon and her child will be joining them tomorrow morning, her husband had an emergency meeting today and had offered to keep August with him so Daphne could enjoy a day with her family without stressing.
"My dear, Simon is a true gentleman. You simply could not have done any better." Violet exclaimed with a hand over her heart at the thoughtful meaning behind Simon's actions. Penelope glanced at Eloise beside her to see her pretend to gag. Nudging her friend playfully, Penelope continued her conversation with Francesca about her piano lessons.
Three hours had gone by as the women felt their ride come to a stop, Violet exited first, being last, Penelope met once more with Anthony helping her out. He offered his arm and guided her to the front of the home. He looked down at her and gave a genuine smile.
"Welcome back to Aubrey Hall."

I have been listening to suggestions and have made this chapter much longer, I hope you enjoy! :)
Chapter Text
Eloise and Daphne were currently guiding Penelope through Pall Mall. "So the idea of the game is to be the first to win but also to cause the most problems for the rest of the players?"
The two sisters eagerly nodded, glad she was quick to learn. Anthony was the one that gathered them all together, "Okay, we will technically be playing two games this time since Bassett is arriving tomorrow. Think of this as a practice." The siblings scoffed and rolled their eyes as Penelope weary stared at the floor in pretend interest.
"Then let Penelope choose her mallet first, being the guest after all." Eloise spoke up, with her arms crossed smugly. Instead of voicing it, the viscount gestured to her first. Glancing at the colors, her eyes locked with the black mallet. Benedict whispered something to Anthony which caused his jaw to clench, catching on to the motion, Penelope tilted her head to him.
"Is this one yours? Do you want it?" "NO! Penelope, you picked yours. Don't offer it away, especially to Ant." Eloise claimed loudly. Nodding unsure, she took her space back. Silence slid into the area before chaos struck as the remaining players leapt forward for their mallet.
The game had been going quite well, Penelope was able to witness the competitive side of the normally well put together Bridgertons. She bursted into laughter at the distant expression Colin had when she knocked his orange ball behind a bush.
"You are a monster Pen, I should have known you could be so ruthless." He whined as he headed to the direction he last saw his ball, she stuck her tongue childishly at him which he returned.
Eloise swung her arm around her shoulder as they walked to the fifth wicket. The brunette leaned close so no one could hear her next words, "And this is when Lady Whistledown comes out to play." That caused the redhead to laugh again, she leaned in to her friend as she joined.
"Are you two exchanging ideas with one another, if so I want in." Daphne exclaimed coming up from behind them, the two shared a look before Penelope quickly came up with something.
Speaking softly she gestured to the duchess to come closer, "Eloise was just talking about teaming up on Anthony, Colin is basically out, Benedict is two wickets behind. All three of us are on five while he is only in front of us by one." She glanced at said man as he waited for them at wicket five, their eyes met briefly which made her smirk. Daphne, liking the plan, took her turn by getting her ball right before the sixth hole. Next, Eloise smugly headed to Anthony's ball.
Recognizing what she was doing, Anthony glared at his sister, "I swear El, if you-." She sent his ball flying, every player stopped to watch the blue ball travel across the field, landing just on the outside of the lake.
Flicking her hair out of her face, Eloise passed her older brother, "Oops." The three high fived, Penelope bumped Eloise's yellow ball into the next wicket. She was the only one that saw the flicker of mischief in the viscount's eyes when he placed himself in front of her ball instead of going to his own.
Walking closer she squinted her eyes accusingly "Don't you dare Anthony." her eyes widened as he openly winked at her as he swung. Same direction as his own, the redhead starred as her ball splashed into the lake.
Anthony shrugged innocently as he started his track to his ball, "I guess that's it for you Penelope." ignoring him, she strolled to the edge of the water, she examined how deep the ball had landed and tried to calculate if she could reach it. Anthony, had already hit his ball back to the play field leaned on a nearby tree, amused at her determination.
Getting more frustrated, Penelope lifted her dress skirt and gently entered the water. Taken back, Anthony sauntered over just in time to catch her arm. "Are you crazy! You're going to ruin your dress!"
Rolling her eyes, she escaped his hold and found her ball, quickly knocking it back to the land. Unfortunately, as she went to trudge her way back herself, she had stepped on her skirt and fell forwards. Scrambling to get her head out of the water, she gasped when she felt someone pick her up.
Once back on the grass she swept her hair back to finally see again, seeing the concerned look on the older man's face made her giggled loudly. The viscount could not believe what he was experiencing, not only Penelope had just fallen in the lake but now she is laughing madly. Yet at that moment he couldn't help the laugh that bubbled out of him.
The two finally managed to calm down to catch their breath, Anthony helped her up and gave her his coat in hopes to keep her somewhat warm.
Anthony had gone to ask if she was okay when the rest of the Bridgerton rushed over to check the redhead, he stepped back and allowed his mother to fuss over her. He watched as the woman was guided towards the house, Penelope turned her head to him and said one last thing. "I can see why you enjoy Pall Mall after all, it brings the worst out of us all." She walked off with a grin on her face as his laughter rang through her ears.
By the time the remaining Bridgertons had finished clearing the equipment and arrived inside, the women were happily talking while they waited for Penelope to finish washing up and come down.
"Mother? Is Pen okay?" Benedict asked while taking a seat across from them, his brothers following him.
Violet raised her eyes to him and smiled softly, "She is fine dear, other than cold she had no injuries. She should be coming down any minute." As if on cue, footsteps could be heard coming from the stairs. All heads turned as Penelope made her way down in a soft blue dress with her skirts layered with darker blues, white floral ran down from her chest to her hips, her hair had been put up in a loose braided crown with curls framing her face.
She smiled sheepishly and placed a clear bag filled with water on the table that she had been hiding behind her. "Uh, as embarrassing as this is going to be. I believe this little guy belongs in the lake."
The Bridgerton leaned close to spot a small salmon fluttering in the bag. Colin slapped a hand over his mouth to stop a noise from coming from him. Benedict on the other hand, had no issues laughing at the scenario before him. "W-where e-even was it!" He said through his chuckles.
Her face went red, turning away and seating next to Violet. "That is none of your concern, he should be released right away." Eloise's own eyes narrowed at her friend's reaction, only for her to go big once she figured out where it would have been for her to get so flustered.
"Pen, was that fish by any chance in your dress?" She only received a glare at the red faced woman as now Colin and Gregory joined their brother in laughing. Daphne herself giggled softly with her younger sisters as Violet gave Penelope an sincere shoulder squeeze while she scolded her children for such behavior.
Noticing his silence, Penelope gaze landed on Anthony, she huffed as she saw his shoulders laughing as he tried to compose himself. "You guys are insufferable. If you need me, I'll be at the library." She ignored the calls from behind her as she headed in where the library was located. She wasn't actually upset, in all honesty, she was happy that she had got the family to break.
Penelope was more embarrassed than anything, she was so used to being an 'embarrassment' to the Ton or her mother that Penelope was grateful for her not doing anything embarrassing in front of the Bridgerton until now. Though she knows they were not actually laughing at her, she still felt this sinking feeling in her stomach.
Entering the room, she stroked the spines of the books as she waited for one of them to peak her interest. Her fingers stopped on the book with a red spine and gold leaves. Gently removing it from the shelf, Penelope got comfortable on the chair and read the title. "Sense and Stability by Jane Austin." She whispered to herself while opening the book.
An hour later, Penelope remained so engrossed with the book that she had not noticed another in the room with her. She switched positions only to let out a squeal when she saw a shadow casted over her.
"Shit, Penelope! It's only me, benedict." She snapped at him while still trying to catch her breath, "Are you insane! You know better than to sneak up on someone, nonetheless a woman in a candle lighted room!" "Sorry, I didn't purposely try to spook you." And Penelope would normally have believed him if it wasn't a huge smirk painted on his face. She snapped the book shut and turned to him with a grin of her own.
"I wonder what Violet would say when I tell her, her second oldest swore in front of a woman." His jaw dropped, only for the smirk to return much wider this time. "And I wonder what mother would say when I tell her, you have been calling her by her name behind her back." The two stare at one another for a little while before sticking out a hand.
"I won't stay a thing if you won't."
"Deal."
With that out of the way, Benedict spoke on why he was here, "I came here to apologise, I had realized how rude I had been." Penelope only waved him off, " I wasn't upset, just embarrassed. The moment just reminded me too much of my mother, I'm fine." eyebrows scrunched up, Benedict thought back on times when Portia would cause problems and drag the youngest Featherington into it.
"While I can't say the same about Lady Featherington, I can say that you shouldn't worry about what the Ton has to say about you. What matters is what you think about yourself as your first priority." The red head was touched by his words, once again she was extremely thankful for the Bridgertons.
"Thank you Benedict, that means more than you could ever believe." A soft smile was exchanged before the man also declared that dinner was ready and that he was sent to collect her.
The other Bridgertons heard their laughter before the two came into the living room, "I'm telling you, Prudence walked up to the flower and started talking to it like it was going to speak back all because mother said something about her hearing voices in the garden."
Penelope giggled, Benedict laughed harder. "What was she hearing?" Penelope grinned, "My maid Grace and I were reading and tricked her into believing someone had snuck in." The man almost tripped as he bent over with his laughter, Penelope was quick to support his weight as she headed to their seats.
The rest in the room allowed them to have a minute to compose themselves while dinner was being served. Violet cleared her throat, "How are you feeling Penelope? No signs of sickness?" The redhead shook her head as she started eating, "I'm feeling great Lady Bridgerton, curling up and reading a book helped a lot."
Although the formal title got to her a little, Violet couldn't stop the fond smile she sent to the girl. She always wished for Penelope to marry into the family, Violet glanced at Colin eating away while arguing with Eloise, her eyes went to Benedict as the two continued exchanging stories to one another.
Lastly, Violet focused on her eldest. Anthony had his focus on Hyacinth but his body was facing the red head across from him, she noticed her son drawn every now and then to Penelope when she did something that caught his gaze .
'It might still happen if I have a say about it.' She thought while sipping her wine to hide her smirk.
Chapter 5: Chapter Five
Notes:
I am once again amazed by how much love you guys are showing this story, thank you! Also, do we want to have a close friendship between Penelope and Simon? Also is it bad that I struggle with writing Colin and Penelope's friendship? I really haven't got any clue where that is going, I know in the end they will be friends but do we want them to argue? And if so, what will they fight about?
I will say, in this chapter Penelope is a bit OC at Colin but I think it was more in defense. Anyway enjoy! :)
Chapter Text
"There's my pride and joy!" Daphne announced with a smile as she took her son from her husband with a small kiss to his lips before heading over to her mother.
Anthony slapped Simon on the back when he saw his expression, "Regretting having a kid now are we?" He chuckled at the glare he got in return for his comment as the Duke followed after his wife almost like a lost puppy.
"You sure do like to rile people up don't you?" He didn't need to turn to recognise who was speaking to him. "Bassett makes it far too easy, especially being a father now." She stepped up beside him and looked on as his family cooed at the little boy. "Parenthood suits those two well." Anthony took the chance to glance at her, her eyes shined with longing, but he was unsure which aspect she was longing for.
"Mother and Father were the same when my siblings and I were born, they rarely had a nanny look after us as they believed it was the parents duty to take care of their children." The words trembled out of him as he watched his mother cuddle August.
Penelope swallowed thickly, "My parents were the opposite, at least for me. I spent the first four years of my life only seeing mother and father at the table when we were to eat. Mama kept her focus on Prudence mostly with her being the oldest and papa was constantly out gambling. I don't have much memory of my mother and I, but my father was the one that taught me Piano."
Her vision blurred as she thought back, " He also encouraged me to continue reading despite my mother's disapproval. The two of us would be found often seated opposite one another, me with a book and father with his newspaper." Anthony stared at her as she got lost in her thoughts, he remained quiet in case she was to speak again.
Penelope's eyes landed on the view beside her, she could hear the birds chirping and the horses neighing softly from the stables not too far from them. She smiled fondly, "Papa had taught me to ride when I was twelve, I learned astride before side saddling which caused a huge argument only for him to take me out the very same day, we came back covered in mud but smiling ear to ear."
The two laughed softly, Anthony looked to the side as he said his next sentence. "You are more than welcome to help yourself to ride if you would like during your stay. If you ever need company, ask one of us, Benedict, Colin, Simon and I are really the only ones that do ride. Daphne used to but since getting married she hasn't again. Eloise is too stuck in her books and the other three aren't interested."
"Thank you Anthony, I might go for a ride today then." The two finally were called over as the family noticed their distance. Daphne handed August to Anthony who was quick to secure him in his arms. Penelope took a few steps back as the Bridgertons made their way inside, her heart felt heavy after talking about her deceased father. She never spoke much about him to others, she preferred keeping those moments to herself but Anthony had opened up to her about his parents including his father and she felt this need to say something about her own.
Trailing behind the group, she glanced once more outside. She could hear Eloise talking about another game of Pall Mall, this time being the 'real deal' as if today's game won't be just as chaotic.
"Pen! Are you playing again this time?" Gregory, who had slowed to meet her pace, asked from her left side. She shook her head, chuckling at the protests, "No, I was actually planning on going for a ride since Anthony has given me permission. Plus, I worry I might go for another swim if I do."
All except Simon, who looked confused, laughed at her comment. Waving them goodbye, Penelope headed to the room she was staying to get something more suitable for riding. She giggled at Simon's confusion only for Benedict to reassure him that he will catch him up on yesterday.
She decided on a simple pink dress with her father's old jacket that Grace must have snuck in alongside her riding boots. Her eyes teared up at the teared fabric, she rubbed her thumb over a rip she remembered from one of her lessons with her father. Penelope exhaled as she changed, this ride will help her shake off her dreaded emotions.
Leaving through the back door, Penelope smiled once more at the family before she walked to the stables. She was greeted by several heads which brought a smile to her face. A total of seven horses resided inside, She recognised the horses that the Bridgertons rode when she had visited last alongside Simon's but it was an dapple grey stallion that caught her eye.
The horse was stationed at the back of the stable, her bright blue jewels met his very same blue eyes. Once in front of him, Penelope hovered her hand above his muzzle, allowing him to decide. He took a step and nuzzled into her palm which brought a giggle out of her.
"Hello Darling, you looked so lonely when I entered. I can understand how that feels, I was quite drawn to you." The Stallion huffed and nudged her again, taking a carrot from the basket hanging beside her and waited patiently for him to finish his treat. She noticed the name plate hanging above his stall, "Asher… I think that suits you well boy. Think you're up for a ride?"
He gestured to his right, exactly where the saddles resided. Entering the stall, She was quick to get him saddled, the girl looked around for a stepping stool only for Asher to bend one of his legs to lower himself slightly.
She smiled, "Why thank you good sir." Settled in, Penelope guided him out the wood based building with ease. She led him along the end of the field, through the trees in a slow trot, just getting the hang of the reins. However the duo were quick to speed up as her confidence showed.
The redhead could finally breathe once more, the wind in her face and the background noises of the Pall Mall a couple of meters away from her relaxed her. Penelope closed her eyes and allowed Asher to follow along the tree line, he found a trail and galloped deeper into the forest. Opening her eyes she took in the scenery that passed her, she always felt free when she rode.
She spotted a fallen log a meter in front of her and leaned in towards the horse's ear. "You want to have a go at it boy?" He puffed out of his nose in agreement. She lifted herself up slightly and leaned her weight forward. Gaining speed, she tightened her grip a bit on the reins and let Asher swiftly jump over the object in their way. She cheered as it happened, laughing as the stallion did a few circles before continuing on the path.
"Good job Asher, that was wonderful! "Loosely holding the reins she gently had him turn around only for her to catch a gleam of something a few feet from her. Slowing down, she took the lead and guided him closer. She stopped and slid slowly down from his back, lowering himself once more to help her. Stroking his nose took in the monument. "Edmund Bridgerton…oh…" She whispered.
Penelope lowered her body in honor of the late Viscount, she saw white daisies not too far from the memorial and laid it gently on the grave. She turned back to Asher, "Let us go boy, we should continue on." Comfortably seated, she led the horse back the direction that came from with a quick glance back.
The two flew the woods, Penelope gave control to Asher as he sprinted back to the open field. Dashing past the last bit of trees, she could make out the figures of the Bridgertons. She slowed them down slightly, going from galloping to canter as she approached.
"Penelope!" Hyacinth was the first to spot her, Asher slowed to a trot and then finally a walk. The stallion stopped just before Colin, and did the normal lowering routine. Back on the ground, Penelope fetched the apple slices she had put in the saddle bag and fed them to the grey horse. A disbelief noise came from the man next to her.
"You rode Asher?" His tone irritated her, she glared at him, "Yes? Is that a problem?" Her own tone was sharp, causing him to flinch. "No, no. It's just Asher doesn't allow any of us to ride him. Not even Ant, who is the horse whisperer." Facing the man mentioned, her mouth twitched at the jaw drop look Anthony had as his eyes fluttered between her and the horse behind her. The viscount soon realized the stares he was receiving and coughed to pull himself out of his shock.
"His right, Asher had arrived two years ago, none of us have been able to get close enough to try to ride him. You seem to have a true touch with him though after seeing how you guys ran." She shrugged off the compliment, "He looked lonely, I understood that way too well." Said horse, affectionately nimble her red locks, losing the hairstyle to the point that her hair fell down her back.
"Hey, you gremlin! Do you have any clue how long that took me to do!" She complained while the animal continued to eat her hair. She swatted him away with her hand as she tried to constrain her giggles only to break when Asher neighed right in her face.
Everyone laughed at how satisfied Asher looked at ruffling Penelope's hair that ended up falling in her face. She splatted as it landed in her mouth, "This is the thanks I get for taking you out for a ride?! Unbelievable." She dramatically stomped towards Anthony, as he was the closest to the stables, she grinned as she heard hooves follow her.
She turned only for Asher to stop, continuing her walk the noise was heard again. She shared a smile with Benedict who was on the other side of Anthony, and led the way back to the stables. Once Asher was back in his stall, Penelope fed him some oats and stroked his nose once more. "I'll come back tomorrow to take you out again, okay boy?" Getting a huff in response, The girl left to return to the others.
Francesca and Hyacinth were the first to her side as they dragged her into the main sitting room. "I must know where you learned to ride like that! You looked so graceful and…" "Free?" Pen offered the girl, Francesca nodded frantically.
Penelope took a sip of the tea the staff had poured, "It may come to a surprise, but my father taught me. Prudence and Philippa wanted nothing to do with the horses in our stables. I had read about said animals and was intrigued about them which gave father the idea to teach me how to ride."
Her eyes strayed to the view outside, " I always had this sense of relief when I rode, I felt like I could breathe again without worrying about the consequences. Of course, said lessons caused a few arguments among my parents but father used to take me riding so he too could escape mother."
The people in the room were silent as they took in her words, Violet's heart swelled with pride. She was extremely impressed by how well Penelope had been brought up despite the woman that had given birth to the sweet girl.
However the Bridgertons were tongue tied when Hyacinth asked Penelope a question, "Would you teach me Pen?" Penelope herself lost her words, she glanced at Anthony only for her to see him smiling widely. Was he not upset that his sister had asked for Penelope to teach her and not himself? Instead of worrying about it now, Penelope sent the young girl a fond smile and nodded. "I would be honored to teach you Hy."
Penelope accepted the embrace Hyacinth gave her as she locked eyes with Anthony, his real smile on full display.

Notes:
As you can tell, I have been writing longer chapters and I hope this one doesn't disappoint! I'm quite happy with where this one went and I hope you liked it as well.
I also thought of bumping up Penelope and Eloise's age but I'm not to sure yet.
Let me know what you think, enjoy!:)

Chapter Text
The first month at Aubrey Hall went quickly, Penelope was teaching Hyacinth every second day on Daphne's mare. The young girl was a natural, she had gone from trotting the first week to galloping by the end of august. The redhead had gotten used to Anthony hanging around when the lessons were going on, she was not sure if it was because of his worry of his sister or not trusting Penelope to be able to teach properly.
Either way, she normally ignored him except when he has a habit of correcting her like now, "She should be holding the reins with her left hand at all times." Letting out a groan which caused the girl to giggle at her teacher's behavior.
"Yes, Anthony, I am aware. She has been doing that but while going around in a circle, having both hands on the lead gives her more balance so she won't get stuck." Her hands landed on her hips as she shot him a look that made him stop the words he was about to say.
The lesson finished not too long after that, Hyacinth thanking her as she hurried to her next class. Penelope saddled Asher, she didn't notice Anthony following her in the stables.
"I apologise if I come off rude, I tend to get…" He trailed off, trying to think of the appropriate word. "Protective? Stubborn? Prickly?" She teased as she leaned against the stallion. Anthony chuckled, nodding as his hands remained stroking his horse.
Penelope straightened up as she got curious, "When Hy asked me to teach her, you seemed happy. I would've assumed you would suggest yourself in teaching. Why didn't you?" His lips turned downwards, eyes narrowed, Anthony scanned the woman's facial features. He must have found what he was looking at as his stare eased off, " How are you so naïve to how much my younger siblings look up to you? Especially Fran and Hy, those two look to you as if you individually hung each and every star in the night sky yourself."
She flushed as she tried to decline such a title with the girls. Anthony just shook his head and turned to his black Spanish Friesian Stallion, Jack. "Would you accompany me on a ride, Miss Featherington?" Finally back to her senses, Penelope mockingly bowed to the man, "I would be delighted Lord Bridgerton." She giggled as he went to grab her, she hid behind Asher who glared at Anthony. The two were silent as the viscount got his horse ready, Anthony got the full experience of seeing Asher lower himself for the short woman.
The quartet were approaching the forest when Penelope clicked her tongue to signal her horse to speed up, she sent a grin to Anthony, "Think you can catch up, Viscount?" Without a second to spare, the duo were off, leaving dust in their departure. Anthony huffed in amusement, he too made a click, catching up closely behind the ones ahead. He came up beside her and gave her a smirk as the two kept switching between first and second place. Penelope, realizing the log was not far from where they were, brought a smirk on her own face and set Asher into a faster pace.
Anthony's eyebrows rose when he saw the object on the path, he directed Jack away from the trail to go around the log. Brown eyes widened in disbelief when the grey stallion soared over the tree with ease. He got caught up in staring at how relaxed and genuinely happy Penelope looked, her red locks were up in a tight bun besides a few strands that flowed to her neck nicely. Anthony couldn't take his eyes off her crystal blue eyes as she and Asher do a few victory laps around him.
"What do you think, boy? I think I've officially broken him this time." Speaking to the grey stallion as she slowed to a stop next to him. The horse made a noise that sounded like a laugh.
He shook his head to come back to reality, he sent her a charming smile that caused her next breath to come out shaky. "I have come to be quite pleased when I learn something new about you Pen. Thinking back, I thought I had you all figured out. But as I get to know you away from your mother's clutches, I'm delighted to meet the true Penelope that you keep hidden from the Ton."
She couldn't really understand the feeling she felt at this time, it was both new and old. Penelope hasn't even felt this with Colin, who she 'loved'. This emotion was something she thought should be let it but also be held tight away from the public eye. Now she wished more than ever that her mother had given her a talk about emotions because Penelope had no idea what to do with them.
At the moment though, she pushed them deep inside her heart and replied with, " Then I shall not disappoint in hiding away as I normally do around you," Taking in the position of the sun, Penelope gently turned Asher around, "I'll say it almost time for lunch, we should head back." A grin took over her face, "Last one back gets to deal with Benedict's next artist rant!" She spoke over the wind as the four raced back to the stables. A contagious laugh graced the walls of Asher's stall as Anthony mumbled some rather unpleasant words at his loss.
The whole walk back to the house was laughter as Anthony continued his inappropriate curses, thankfully Penelope elbowed him lightly in the ribs before he entered the dinner room if his mother's pointed look was to go by what would have happened if he kept going.
Taking a seat, Penelope was sitting next to the Duke and Gregory. She bowed respectively to Simon and ruffled the young boy's hair to distract him from throwing food at his little sister. She ignored the boy's complaints as he tried to fix his hair without much use, she ran her fingers through his hair giving it that nice neat look back. A red faced Gregory thanked her quietly before focusing on his food.
Simon cleared his throat low enough to draw her attention his way, "Miss Featherington, I had come to know quite little about you. Daphne talks very highly of you but I only know of you being the girl that has stolen the hearts of the Bridgerton family." She pretended she didn't hear the last bit, "What is it that you would like to know, your grace?"
The two were drawn into their conversations of getting to know one another. Penelope was telling him about her story when she was twelve, "My butler, Briarly, was looking for me for dinner. I had thought it was a good idea to climb up the gumtree we have in the gardens. My foot got caught in a vine, I started feeling guilty and started to move only to fall instead." A chuckle left her when Simon gasped in fake horror.
"In the end Briarly found me hanging upside down swinging with the wind with my hair in my face." Simon laughed, he imagined the scenario well which made him laugh harder.
Benedict, who overheard from next to Gregory, asked her something, "Why were you hiding anyway?" The smile fell from her face instantly, she took a drink of her wine, "Mother and Father were arguing, she had gotten sick of my 'unnatural' behavior and was going to send me to some relatives overseas." Everyone had stopped, they were aware of Portia's concerning attitude towards the youngest Featherington but none of them thought it would suggest such an act.
Simon raised his glass and clinked it with hers, "To neglectful parents." He toasted with an understanding look. "To neglectful parents." She repeated back to him and gulped down the rest of her wine. The duke followed after her and tipped back the rest of his own drink.
At that very second, Penelope and Simon secured an unbreakable bond.
"Colin! Give it back!" An annoyed Penelope followed closely by Eloise were making their way to the laughing man as he held the book over his head. "Whatever do you mean Pen? I was simply just reading this book, it was you who has disturbed me." A cheeky smirk slipped onto his face, normally Penelope would have swooned but at this moment? There was nothing more she wanted to do but punch that expression on his face.
Instead, she crossed her arms over her chest and gave him a glare, "Is that so? What is it about then? Without reading the back." Satisfaction ran through her when he froze, she saw movement behind him and smirked as the book was yanked from Colin.
"Don't you know better than to steal a woman's book, especially Pen's or El's?" Daphne handed the book back to the redhead with a smile, "Run along Colin, go bother Ben or Ant." Sulking, Colin did what he was told with Eloise following as she teased him.
Penelope thanked the woman only for her to be waved off, "Nonsense, it's what family does." This time, the shorter woman froze, she knew she was close with the Bridgertons but family? She was a part of their family? Her own family barely wanted anything to do with her but these people saw her as herself and still stayed?
Daphne, having seen her conflicted look, took her hands to get her out of her head. "You are family Penelope, Mama sees you as her fifth daughter, Eloise sees you as her sister, my younger siblings see you as a role model. Benedict and Colin treat you as younger sisters, even Simon thinks of you as a sibling,"
Her face looked from behind her, Penelope turned to spot Anthony playing with Hyacinth and Gregory in a game of tag. "And Ant, you bring something out of him that none of us have seen since our father's passing."
Blue eyes followed said man around the drawing room, a chuckle left her when the the two young ones teamed up and jumped onto his back which resulted in Anthony to lose balance and fall onto the rug with his siblings laughing above him.
Penelope's eyes softened at the pure love that shined in his deep chocolate brown eyes.
"And I think he is bringing something out of you too." Her head whipped back to the older woman, she opened her mouth to disagree only to stop when Daphne shook her head.
"You two have been getting closer, Ant has realized how amazing you are when you aren't pretending. You have seen Anthony when he is away from the public. The both of you just haven't realized your true feelings, do not worry though, I will be helping with that."
Penelope was dumbfounded, 'true feelings? For Anthony?' She thought, though before she went to rip apart such thoughts, the duchess's words came to her once more. "Are you trying to matchmake me and your brother?" The young mother just winked at her and took her spot beside Simon.
Penelope's brain frizzled at all the information she was processing. She couldn't possibly feel any more than friends to the eldest son, her heart was already taken by his brother.
Her eyes went to Colin's figure. He and Eloise were listening to something Benedict said. He must have felt her gaze as he turned and gave her a boyish smile with a wink.
Two months ago, Penelope's heart would have pounded in her chest, trying to escape to the boy that she loved. Yet, all she felt was affection for her best friend, her heart kept steady. Sending her own smile, the girl's eyes continued to the commotion on the floor.
Anthony had Hyacinth underneath him as he tickled her sides, Gregory was off to the side, catching his breath since he must have been the first victim. She felt a spark inside her alight as she watched on, she couldn't tear her sight away from the big grin that the viscount had as Hyacinth tried to wiggle away.
Penelope's heart was torn, she understood roughly that there was something that she felt for Anthony, but if so, that would mean she had just gotten over her crush on Colin. Her four year crush.
Something inside her snapped at the fact, Penelope was irritated with herself. She knew her love for Colin one-sided, that Colin would never feel that way for her.
But it hurt in a twisted way that for her to get over those feelings her heart had started beating for another Bridgerton brother. Nonetheless regardless of what Daphne said, Penelope was well aware that Anthony would never look at her that way as well.
Who would? She came from a family that is so full of themselves that Penelope wondered if she was adopted, she didn't fit the standards of a woman in this time. And she was the infamous Lady Whistledown, Penelope was certain when the Bridgertons learned of her secret identity that they would want nothing to do with her.
Her stomach turned at said future event, Penelope wished nothing more that she had gone with her mother instead of here. At least with her family, she could listen to her mama go on about her weight or 'insensible' habits and block them out.
A hand fell on her shoulder, breaking her thoughts. Penelope took in Violet's concerned eyes as her mouth moved. "Sorry, what did you say?" Even more worried, Violet handed Penelope an envelope. "You have been sent a letter."
Thanking the matriarch, Penelope sat on one of the chairs furthest from the family. Her eyes instantly recognised her mother's handwriting.
𝒫𝑒𝓃𝑒𝓁𝑜𝓅𝑒,
𝐼 𝒹𝑜 𝒽𝑜𝓅𝑒 𝓎𝑜𝓊 𝒶𝓇𝑒 𝓌𝑒𝓁𝓁 𝓌𝒾𝓉𝒽 𝓉𝒽𝑒 𝐵𝓇𝒾𝒹𝑔𝑒𝓇𝓉𝑜𝓃𝓈 𝒾𝓃 𝓉𝒽𝑒𝒾𝓇 𝒽𝓊𝓂𝒷𝓁𝑒 𝒽𝑜𝓂𝑒, 𝓌𝑒 𝓂𝒾𝓈𝓈 𝓎𝑜𝓊 𝒹𝑒𝒶𝓇𝓁𝓎,
She snorted unladylike at her mother's words, did she really think Penelope would believe such a lie.
𝒴𝑜𝓊𝓇 𝓈𝒾𝓈𝓉𝑒𝓇 𝒶𝓃𝒹 𝐼 𝒶𝓇𝑒 𝒹𝑜𝒾𝓃𝑔 𝓌𝑒𝓁𝓁, 𝓌𝑒 𝒽𝒶𝓋𝑒 𝓈𝑒𝒸𝓊𝓇𝑒𝒹 𝓈𝓅𝑜𝓃𝓈𝑜𝓇𝓈𝒽𝒾𝓅 𝓌𝒾𝓉𝒽 𝓂𝓎 𝓁𝒶𝓉𝑒 𝒸𝑜𝓊𝓈𝒾𝓃'𝓈 𝓌𝒾𝒻𝑒 𝓌𝒾𝓉𝒽 𝓉𝒽𝑒 𝒶𝓇𝓇𝒶𝓃𝑔𝑒𝓂𝑒𝓃𝓉 𝑜𝒻 𝒫𝓇𝓊𝒹𝑒𝓃𝒸𝑒 𝒶𝓃𝒹 𝒽𝑒𝓇 𝓈𝑜𝓃 𝓉𝑜 𝒷𝑒 𝓂𝒶𝓇𝓇𝒾𝑒𝒹 𝒷𝑒𝒻𝑜𝓇𝑒 𝓃𝑒𝓍𝓉 𝓈𝑒𝒶𝓈𝑜𝓃. 𝐼 𝒹𝑜 𝒽𝑜𝓅𝑒 𝓎𝑜𝓊 𝓌𝒾𝓁𝓁 𝒸𝑜𝓃𝑔𝓇𝒶𝓉𝓊𝓁𝒶𝓉𝑒 𝓎𝑜𝓊𝓇 𝓈𝒾𝓈𝓉𝑒𝓇 𝑜𝓃𝒸𝑒 𝓌𝑒 𝒶𝓇𝑒 𝓉𝑜 𝓇𝑒𝓉𝓊𝓇𝓃.
𝒴𝑜𝓊𝓇 𝓂𝑜𝓉𝒽𝑒𝓇.
Her face paled as she finished the letter, was that what she had meant from her words before? Was she the one that had originally been a part of the deal?
The chair scraped against the timber floors as Penelope stood up. Her breathing was shallow as she quietly excused herself, she continued on despite the voices behind her as she raced to get fresh air.
Tears pricked in the corner of her eyes as she dropped down on the grass, her knees ached as they were forced to take her weight while she choked out a sob. Penelope brought her hand up to muffle her cries, she silently prayed that the Bridgertons would leave her be even if just to collect herself before someone came to check on her. Her blurring vision locked on to the scrunched up paper in her grip.
Rage was what soon filled her insides, Portia Featherington was well known as a woman that was obsessive about marrying off her daughters in wealthy families. But to marry her eldest daughter off to a deceased cousin's family? It was cousin Jack all over again for heaven's sake!
calming her breathing, Penelope relaxed her grip on the letter and threw it beside her. Her legs went to her chest while she curled her arms around then with her chin held up by them. The youngest Featherington sat there, trying to piece together what she would do with the situation her mother had spoken off.
So in her head, Penelope didn't hear the approaching footsteps nor her nickname on the person's tongue. It wasn't until the new guest sat down that she realized someone was with her. "Pen? What's going on?" Anthony's soft voice, something she only heard when he was talking to Hyacinth, threw her out of her head. Instead of answering him, she handed him the letter with a trembling exhale. Gently taking it, Anthony's eyes flicked over her features before his attention was drawn to the paper. His face expressed the same horror she had merely fifteen minutes ago. Penelope spoke before he could, "When mother told me she accepted Violet's invitation, she had said something about 'needing' me." The tears started shortly when she looked at Anthony, "I think I was supposed to be married off in Prudence place…"
Anthony's head failed to think of anything to say at this moment, he couldn't understand why Portia had decided to tell her daughter of the arrangement in a letter instead of waiting until they returned. Unless, the woman deliberately did it as a way of hurting Penelope. Either way, the viscount despised the woman for making the redhead fall apart.
He wrapped his arms around her as she shook from her crying, Anthony pressed her snugly into his chest and kissed her crown. "I promise you Pen, I will not allow your mother to do such a thing to you. The Bridgertons stand beside you, we will be there for you when you face her again." The shorter one of the two nodded her head from where it laid on his bicep.
The two sat there for a few minutes more as Penelope calmed down, releasing his hold, Anthony stood and held his hand out to her. Accepting his help, the duo slowly made their way back inside.
She took another deep breath as she came face to face with the entrance of the room she had run out of not long ago. A warm hand took hers, blue gazed at brown, he squeezed her hand and gave her a soft smile. "No matter what, we are with you."
Penelope exhaled and took a step forward, his grip anchoring her in more ways than one.

P.S, Do we like the Pen and Simon duo? Want to see more, let me know! They will be chaotic! ;)

Chapter Text
"I knew she was up to something!" Eloise blurted out once the family finished reading the letter, she was horrified by what her best friend's mother wrote but she wasn't shocked by said actions. All the Bridgertons were aware of Portia's 'habits', it seemed that after their last scandal, she got desperate to the point to use her daughter to get what she wanted.
Penelope then processed by telling them about her mother's words in the carriage, Violet came to sit next to Penelope who was seated on the couch with Anthony. "My dear, I couldn't begin to explain how glad I am that you are here with us instead of with her." The girl nodded, worried if she spoke it wouldn't come out right.
"What are we going to do? There is no way in hell Pen is going back there." Benedict spoke up after a few minutes of silence. His mother didn't bother scolding his language as she was too caught up in her thoughts.
"My mother and sister are to return this month, with it still being the off season she will be too focused on sorting the wedding. In the next season, I can find a husband and be out of her clutches." Anthony's hand that wasn't holding Penelope's clenched. He didn't like her plan even if it was logical. It seemed his mother didn't like it either as her eyebrows furrowed.
"You could always marry me, Pen." Colin spoke, sounding serious if it wasn't for the small grin on his face. Had she been her sixteen year old self, Penelope would have been over the moon. Twenty year old Penelope on the other hand couldn't focus on anything but Anthony hand tightly gripping hers.
"Thank Col, but I will have to decline. I believe that if that ever happens we may wish to behead one another by the first month of being married." Sharing a gentle laugh, Penelope didn't notice the man next to her relax.
Daphne's eyes gleamed as her brother glared at colin for his words, that moment she spoke up, "What if I take Penelope under as a mentor? She will live with us under our care as she 'learns', that way as she looks for a husband, she will be out of her mother's reach."
Penelope shook her head rapidly, her free hand waving in front of her, "There is no need of going that far for me, my mother may be…indifferent but trust me, she will be too focused on Prudence to worry about me."
Simon was the one that was quick to reassure her, "Pen, it is no issue. Trust me, we would be more than happy to have you stay with us." His tone was what caused her to cave.
"Fine, but, the moment I get too much, you tell me." " I hardly doubt that will happen but sure." Although the family was still baffled by Portia's decision, they were quick to change the subject about the new season arriving just around the corner.
"Eloise, with Penelope searching for a partner, will you be doing the same instead of scaring them away?" The duchess watched in glee when her brother growled softly, receiving a confused look from Penelope and an amused one from their mother.
Eloise huffed out a sarcastic laugh, "Why yes dear sister, I will allow myself to be swept off my feet by a man that thinks highly of himself and believes women are nothing but children bearers."
"Eloise!" Her daughter simply rolled her eyes and focused on her book again, Violet shook her head and paid attention to the pair next to her. Penelope had shifted closer to the end of the couch as her and Daphne discussed actual lessons the duchess could teach her while she stays with them.
It was Anthony that caught her eye, he was situated behind Penelope, leaning into the cushions as he spoke to Simon who was sitting in the individual seat. His hand that was entwined with the red head's was against his knee, his thumb running up and down in a soothing motion. By the look he seemed completely obvious to it, a thought came to her as she watched.
"Penelope, what is your preference for your husband? If we knew, we could help in your search." The girl remained quiet as she thought of an answer, her eyes glazed over when she finally came to speak. "Someone intelligent, not a genius but-"Eloise cut in, "Someone that could keep up with your wits." An easy going smile placed on Penelope's face as she nodded, "Good looking is not something I desire as much though it would be nice to have a husband that is pleasing to the eye. May it not be a love match as long as he respects me, and treats me as a person that is all I could wish for."
The two older women in the room exchanged a small smirk, thinking how perfect Anthony would be for the girl.
Anthony on other hand was dealing with a mental battle, he was trying his best to think of someone eligible for his friend but simply could not come up with anyone except the men in the room now. Simon was immediately out, as was Colin, after Penelope's words. He looked to Benedict and felt his anger come back full swing as he thought of the two marrying. A squeeze from the hand he held caused him to lay his eyes on the person next to him.
Penelope's eyebrows were drawn up, worry shining through her eyes made him relax. "I'm fine Pen, just wishing you weren't in this situation to begin with." He stared at the joined hands in wonder, "I will be lying if I said I wasn't relieved that you aren't with your mother right now, I couldn't begin to imagine you in Prudence stead." The tension came back in his jaw as he clenched his teeth down from outright growling.
Blue eyes glanced down at said action, Penelope had this ache in her heart to get rid of the emotion that was coming out from Anthony. This was her family, therefore her responsibility, he had no reason to worry about her besides as a friend yet seeing his reaction she couldn't pinpoint if he was concerned as a friend or something more. Her first instinct was to draw away from him, let whatever he had felt for her ease away. But, she couldn't.
Penelope wanted to figure out his feelings, she wanted to sort out her own and see where to go from there. And as she watched him as he continued to gaze at their hands, she saw the flicker of what seemed like hope in his stare that made her believe he too wanted to discover these emotions.

Chapter Text
The off season was coming to an end, a total of two weeks were left of the visit to Aubrey Hall before the family and Penelope were to return back to London for the new season. If anything, the incident with her mother had brought her relationship with the Bridgertons closer. During her stay she was often seen with at least one Bridgerton with her (Including Simon), which confused the staff at the moment as they watched the red haired girl hurry down the hallway that led to her room.
Penelope breathed out as closed her door, she latched the door to be on the safe side as she fell into the bed. Lifting her head, Penelope remained silent as she heard footsteps coming to the door.
"Penelope? Are you in there?" A voice came from the other side, she sighed in relief when she heard the person leave. Don't get her wrong, she adores the Bridgertons who had slowly become a second family to her now. But right now she was relieved when Daphne hadn't tried to open the door. The duchess had made it her mission to teach Penelope all the works of being the woman of the house even though she highly doubted she was ever going to get the opportunity to use the skills.
The redhead quietly unlocked the door and poked her head out to check if the coast was clear. She was quick to enter the library as she knew Daphne would have checked it first. Completely obvious to the other in the room, Penelope grabbed her recent read and settled into the chair she soon came to enjoy being in.
"Hiding from Daph are we?" jumping at the words, Penelope slowly turned to the man sitting in the bay window opposite her. "I wouldn't say hiding, I would use the better words of being in the right place at the right moment." A chuckle escaped the duke's mouth, mirth in his eyes as he came to sit in the empty chair next to her.
"Getting a bit much isn't it?" That sentence made Penelope slouch as she nodded her head slowly. "I love them, don't get me wrong, but it's still strange to go from a family that wants nothing to do with you to one that constantly wishes to spend time with you. And I fear that they have gotten worse with Mother's letter."
"When I was younger I didn't start talking into seven, and even then I stuttered. My father wanted nothing to do with me and sent me away. When he passed away, there was no joy or despair, I felt nothing but anger in the fact that I had to take on his role. That was why I had no desire to have children, I didn't want them to go through the same thing I did, I didn't believe that I could be different then my father in such topic. Daphne," His expression softened when speaking of his wife, Penelope could tell how much he loved her just from his face.
"She helped me, she gave me a family. Not just August but also within her own family," He looked at her again, "I am in awe of how indifferent the two families are, but I wouldn't change it for the world. Even now, sitting here with you I feel like I'm spending time with my sister." Her eyes widened at his confession, Penelope had similar feelings when she was around Simon but hadn't thought he too might have thought the same.
"Well, you better get used to it because I can tell you now, the Bridgertons will wish that we have never met brother." The grin he gave her was made out of pure chaos.
The remaining weeks, Simon and Penelope treated one another as siblings. It came as a surprise when the others overheard them.
"Brother, are you free at the moment? I was thinking of taking Asher out for a ride and wanted to know if you wanted to come?" Penelope spoke as she entered where Simon was with the older men. Simon grinned and nodded, "Sure sister, Daphne's resting with August at the moment."
The other three were flabbergasted, "Brother? Sister? What?" Colin stumbled with his words as he tried to make sense. Simon smirked as he threw an arm over the short girl's shoulders. "We have made a pact as honorable siblings. Get used to hearing it boys because it will not be going away." The two left them to their own devices.
Benedict blinking out of his trance faced his brothers, "Why do I have this gut feeling that we have created something terrible with those two getting along so well." Colin agreed with a bop of his head, Anthony on other hand kept his eyes on where the redhead had been standing. He knew the pair had been close recently, but to the point of being siblings shocked him. At least Penelope had someone else on her side, nonetheless a duke. If the problem with her mother was to go south, Simon had the ability to take Penelope out of that home as soon as possible without an issue.
Something stirred inside him however about the two going riding, he thought it would have been him she would have asked since nearly everyday they go for one together. Anthony tried shaking the feeling away, he had no reason to feel such a way since Penelope wasn't anything to him beside a friend. Yet, when he thought that his heart sank. "I'll be in my office." He grunted out and left before his siblings could respond.
The moment he was situated in his study, he grabbed out his biggest glass and poured himself some whiskey. Not waiting a second more he drowned the liquid down in one gulp. Slamming the glass down on his desk, Anthony's forehand followed soon afterwards. "What is wrong with me? Bassett isn't even a suitor and yet I envy him for what? Having Pen's attention?" A groan slipped out as his mind went to the fiery red haired girl, no woman. Penelope was twenty years old, she was of the most suitable age to be married. He too was only twenty nine, so the age gap wasn't anything to worry about. Penelope was incredibly smart and kind which was a bonus, he also wasn't blind, her body was stunning regardless of what the Ton thought.
Penelope had a figure of a woman not a girl, but she was his sister's best friend, his mother's ninth 'child' in everything but blood. He tried to get rid of the thought of a marriage with the redhead but his imagination had another idea as he pictured Pen in Bridgerton blue on his arm as they walked into a ball.
His body betrayed him as he felt the tightness in his trousers, shifting in his seat, he immediately shut out said picture. A collection of cheers were heard outside, intrigued, the man headed to the window facing the back yard. His family was sitting down undercover as two horses prance around in front of them.
Anthony watched as Penelope and Simon twisted and turned around one another, trying to poke one another before backing away. Penelope got the upper hand when Asher managed to get behind a distracted Nova and nudged the horse forward. Simon hurried to gain control just in time, and said something that must have been about accepting defeat.
He chuckled as Penelope and Asher did their famous victory circles, she patted the horse's neck in sign of her going down. Asher came back to his normal height once she was off and strolled to the way Simon's horse was having a drink.
Seeing the way Penelope interacted with his family from this far away, caused his breath to catch. Anthony's hand rested on his rapid heart, blue eyes glanced up to the window. A gentle smile is what he received with a gesture for him to come down, his mind encouraged him to stay but his body was already moving.

Chapter Text
Penelope knew the moment they had arrived into London by the busy sounds outside the carriage. She could hear the shouting of the paper boys and businessmen in the streets as they passed.
She looked out the window at the familiar trees as they slowed down in front of the Bridgerton Residence, Penelope waited last to exit, in no real rush to see her family. She took Benedict's arm as he led her out, looking behind her she spotted the familiar figures of her mother and sister waiting outside her home. A smile graced her face when she noticed Briarly heading towards her, thanking the man beside her, Penelope met her butler at the end of the walkway, her smile growing when his own mouth twitched up.
"How was your children's birthdays? How is Marie?" Penelope saw his eyes brighten at the mention of his family, all her staff did when talking about their loved ones.
"They thank you for your gifts, Henry has not put down the toy since it was handed to him and Bridget finished her book in two weeks. Marie adored the jewelry, even tried to get me to give it back. I would have if I wasn't aware of how stubborn you can be when you are determined. They wish for you to visit again soon. I didn't say anything since I know how busy you will be this season." She chuckled at the antics that had happened but quickly went serious at his last statement.
"I presume from your words that you have been alerted of Mother's recent scheme." A sorrow nod was all she got back before her mother grew tired of waiting and crossed the street.
"Penelope, I am glad you are back. Prudence's wedding has been moved to the middle of the season instead of before. Your sister wanted the Ton to come and Joseph was more than happy to hold off to keep his future wife happy. We must get back so you can congratulate Prudence, Philippa is set to arrive later this week." Her mother looped her arm in hers and tried to hasten her along, and would have succeeded if Violet hadn't seen.
"Portia! How wonderful to see you, I do hope you enjoyed your off season. Congratulations to Prudence proposal, I wish the newly couple the best of wishes." Her mother put on a polite smile, nodding to Violet. " Violet, I did enjoy the time away and thank you, I will be sure to send your regards to Prudence. I must get back with Penelope however, Prudence is in great stress of making the wedding as perfect as possible. Good day." Portia had taken another step, dragging her youngest with her only to be stopped again.
"Lady Featherington, I wanted to talk with you about taking Penelope in as my ward, teaching her the way of a duchess were she to ever be in such a proposition. This way you can focus on your eldest, Penelope will stay with us and I can help with finding suitors for her." Daphne saw the hesitation in the woman's expression but it had lessened when mentioning her eldest child.
Portia spoke up after a few beats of silence, "I guess that will be fine, this way I won't be stressing about marrying her off as well as her sister's wedding." Penelope sent a grin to Daphne who gave one in return before her mother pulled her aside and gave her a strict speech about being on her best behavior. Daphne had spoken about Penelope wanting to bring any staff with her to which she responded with Grace while Briarly requesting for him to come as her chaperone.
Penelope agreed right after Portia's approval, genuinely happy having the man that has been a father to her with her. Briarly returned to the Featheringtons home with Portia to get most of her stuff packed for her move. She leaned into Daphne's side as she was led inside the Bridgertons home. Throwing herself into the couch when she was in reach.
"She is crazy, I can not believe the fact that she truly thinks what she has done is okay." Penelope ran a hand down her face, praying that this was all just a dream. Now being in her mother's presence, the red head could tell by her expression how serious her mama was with this agreement which only made her feel more sick about the almost chance that this could have been her.
Benedict and Eloise sat on either side of her, Eloise offered her chocolate from the box she had been holding. Thanking her quietly, Penelope remained quiet as she chewed the delicious treat.
Simon and Daphne took the other couch with Violet and August, "Thank goodness that your mother agreed to you residing with us, now you will be safe and away from her and any of her plans." Penelope quietly agreed to the Duke's words. Her mother may not be the smartest but she was sneaky and quick thinking. If she had stayed she was fairly certain she would be wedded to some old man that is looking for his seventh wife at the age of seventy.
Violet's voice cut off her thoughts, "Now that we don't need to worry about Portia, we will be focusing on finding Penelope a husband. That way her mother will not be able to do anything."
"Tonight is Lady Danbury's ball, since Daphne, Simon and Penelope are not leaving till tomorrow I suggest we start to get ready since we only have a few hours." The girls followed the Matriarch out of the room as the eldest son entered, Violet explained briefly what was happening before she made her way upstairs with her daughters behind her. Penelope faltered as Anthony's eyes cut to her.
"Will you be alright tonight? Your family will be the center of attention with a wedding on the way." His concern warmed her, "I'll be fine Ant, who knows maybe I'll find my one true love tonight and then all my worries will go away." Something flickered on his face but soon disappeared as Anthony smiled at her with a polite smile. "Yes, let's hope for the best then." Her eyebrows scrunched in confusion when Anthony passed her, before she could digest his words, Violet called her name. Right now she pushed it down as she hurried up the stairs, she had too much on her plate to be worried about the Viscount's behavior at the moment.
The time for the ball arrived too quickly for the women as they prepared for the event, Daphne and Violet had gone for their signature blue with beautiful floral patterned splatter across the frock, matching in a way a mother and daughter could pull off. Eloise had gone with a cream dress with puffy sleeves and a high collar that suited her well with her beauty. Violet hair was in her usual high bun, same as Daphne with Eloise similar besides a few stands framing her face nicely.
The three Bridgerton women crowd around Penelope as they were awed by her beauty. "My dear , you look beautiful. Men will not be able to take their eyes off you tonight." Violet's eyes shone with pride as they gazed on the girl before her. Eloise couldn't help but agree with her mother's compliment. Her best friend was sure to wow the Ton tonight and the brunette could not wait to see Portia's expression.
"She is right, Pen, I am sure after tonight you will have a line of Suitors wishing to court you and I will make sure you get your dream husband." Simon had been able to send out the word about Penelope learning under Daphne, which meant the men will be directed to Clyvedon Castle with calling upon the girl.
Simon had spoken to Daphne about it, which she believed was because he was going to go all 'big brother' on them. Not like she was going to stop him. Daphne and Violet excused themselves to head down first with the two best friends not far behind.
Anthony, currently waiting at the entrance with the rest of the adults, looked up when hearing footsteps. He smiled fondly at his mother and sister's outfits, they were perfectly matched. His gaze locked on to the flash of red behind his mother.
Eloise led her friend down the stairs carefully, safely on foot ground the brunette shifted her focus to her family. The four men were staring at Penelope in awe.
The red gown was stitched to be loose but showed off her curves. The skirt had a layer of silk over the original fabric creating a shine while the top half had been carved with floral patterns. Her hair had been pulled into a braided crown with loose strands falling down to her neck.
Gulping, Anthony took a step forward and offered his arm to her. With a quick glance to Violet, Penelope accepted his arm while he escorted her to the carriage. The man remained speechless as arrived outside, it was until all the women beside Penelope were in the carriage that his words came back to him.
"You look Exquisite tonight Penelope, your dress really suits your hair. I was hoping to request a dance this evening, if you will accept of course."
Her eyes lit up, "I would be honored my lord." She mockingly bowed before she escaped his stare by sitting next to his mother.
Entering the ballroom, Penelope was amazed by the décor that Lady Danbury had chosen for tonight's event. She was completely obvious to the stares she was receiving because of her appearance, having never had the attention it was understandable why she didn't realize.
The Bridgerton however, were well aware of the attention their beautiful wallflowers were getting. Violet was beaming, excited for Penelope and what was to come after tonight. Daphne was taking note of some of the faces just to recognised them in the upcoming days, Simon was far from pleased, his glare shook the men to the core only to breathe when the duchess slapped his arm for his actions.
Colin and Benedict were keeping an eye on Anthony who looked perfectly fine, but they were not fooled as his jaw clenched. Eloise walked along her friend as they went to get a refreshment, pride shining through at how People seemed to have frozen time.
"Miss Featherington, you look ravishing tonight. I do hope to see the best dancer of the Ton on the dance floor." Penelope smiled at the older woman as her cane threatened to tremble on people's feet that were in her way.
"Lady Danbury, gorgeous party as always. I am afraid the only time I will be on the floor is if I get asked." Lady Danbury's mouth twisted into a mischief smirk, "My dear, I do not think that will be an issue this time. I believe you have bewitched every available suitor that is here." The woman couldn't help the laugh that crawled out of her at the confusion on the girl's face. She shook her head and wished the two girls a good night before heading to Lady Bridgerton.
"It seems that the wallflower has now become a wildflower." Violet lips matched Agatha's, "Indeed my friend, a wildflower indeed."
Eloise listened to her friend talk only for a figure to tower over the two, "Miss Featherington, you look marvelous this evening, would you like to dance?" The man, Mr. John Wellington, Blonde hair, blue eyes, sharp jawline but there wasn't much up in there that would challenge Penelope. That didn't stop her from she dancing with him, she accepted his outstretched hand and let herself be pulled onto the dance floor.
Penelope was led into an upbeat Galop, Mr. Wellington was a quite good dancer so she had no issues with dancing with him. "Do you play any instruments, Miss Featherington?" She nodded, "I do, but I am far more interested in my studies."
His eyes widened slightly, which Penelope took as he had experience talking to a woman that spoke the truth and not what he wanted to hear. "I see, and children?" She flinched as his hand grazed her hip before returning to her waist.
"I don't see why I wouldn't have children, however, whoever my husband will be, he will respect my wishes when I decide to bear his children and not the night we are to marry." The furrow of his brows confirmed to Penelope that this man wasn't someone she wanted. Thanking him for the dance, the redhead quickly returned to where Eloise had rejoined her family.
Benedict noticed her first, "Pen, how was your dance with Mr. Wellington?" "If I have to deal with that man again, I will punch him in the nose." The Bridgertons were taken back by the disgusted look Penelope sent to the blonde man that had been watching her leave. Simon on the other hand chuckled in glee, "Maybe I won't have to worry about scaring suitors away, you're capable of doing it yourself." his laugh cut off when he received a punch in the arm by the redhead. "If another man asks me to dance and doesn't keep his hands where there should be, I will be retiring early."
Anthony's eyes sharpened when she finished, "Penelope, are you telling me Mr. Wellington touched you inappropriately?" She shivered at his low tone, "I wouldn't say inappropriate, he was asking about children and his hand grazed my hip. Maybe it slipped and I'm overreacting." The men exchanged a look, fully aware that it was no coincidence.
Anthony reaches for her head and kisses the back of it, "How about that promised dance?" Penelope faltered when the music for a waltz came on but the softness in the man's eyes convinced her. "Of course my lord." She giggled at the huff she got in response before returning to the dance floor.
Couples moved out of their way as they circled the floor, Anthony gaze never once leaving her own. He spun her in time with the other dancers, bringing her back to him as they continued. "You really are the best dancer of the Ton." She pouted with fake horror, "Were you eavesdropping on my conversation Lord Bridgerton?" Chuckling, he spun her around again.
"Lady Danbury was not quiet when she spoke those words to you, I was close by that is all." "Mhm." Was all Penelope said, ducking under his arm and circling him as their hands rejoined.
At the same time, Violet and Daphne watched the pair intensely alongside Lady Danbury. "Those two are something else, I wonder how this will play out." The hostess spoke, eyes following as they danced carefully. Daphne nodded her head while Violet continued to look on as her son threw his head back to laugh at something Penelope said. She could see the emotions shining through their eyes as the pair grinned at one another, Violet felt like laughing at how obvious the two were to their feelings for one another.
"This season is surely going to be eventful."

Chapter Text
"Miss Featherington I would be honored if you would accommodate me this evening to a promenade along with Duke Bassett and Lady Bridgerton for further discussion on courtship." Viscount Francis Johnson requested as Penelope sat in front of him. After Lady Danbury's ball, the Duke and Duchess state was bombarded by multiple men. Wanting to get on the good side of said Duke to allow a courtship with Penelope, however it didn't take long for Simon and Daphne to get rid of the ones that they knew weren't any good. The number of men were shortened quickly but Penelope would be lying if she wasn't extremely thankful for the fact that she only was left with two suitors by the time she chose.
Viscount Francis Johnson had been one of the first to request Penelope's company, when she first saw him the youngest Featherington thought that he was doing all this for a joke. Francis had the looks that's for sure, beautiful hazel eyes, soft brown locks pushed to the side. But he also looked like the type of man that only wanted to drink and spend time with all the women possible. So Penelope was surprised when they first spent some time together and Francis asked her about her interests that didn't revolve around sewing or cooking.
Penelope smiled at the other man, "I would like that very much, my lord." The redhead looked to Simon and Violet who were seated a little further away. Violet was watching with a soft expression as the remaining man in the room narrowed his eyes towards the brunette. Penelope was quick to shoot him a look before Francis noticed and walked the man to the door with a promise to meet later.
Penelope blew out a sigh while walking back to the drawing room, "I get that you don't like the idea of me marrying for convenience Simon, but I need to do this before my mother forces me with someone that could pass as my grandfather." The Duke winced at such a thought but turned to the redhead with what could almost be explained as a pout. "I just want you to find someone who you can rely on and not have to be worried of what their true intentions are." The younger woman's expression softened as she went and sat beside Simon and placed her head on his shoulder. "You know, I always wondered what it would be like to have a brother, nonetheless an older one. I'm grateful and lucky enough to have you as one, knowing that you will be here for me no matter what happens."
Simon slid his head down to rest on the shorter woman's head, breathing in the comforting smell of the frizzy hair brushing his nose gently. " And I will remain here with you for however long you need me for." 'So forever then." A smile took place on his face as he gave the woman a kiss on the head, Simon eyes met with Violet's how was watching them encounter with a fond look. The two exchanged a look before Simon drew away and allowed Violet to help Penelope up.
"We must get you dressed, " I asked Grace ahead of time to meet us at your room." Violet led the smaller woman through the building, greeting her maid once inside the room designed for Penelope.
Violet clapped with shining eyes, "Let us get started."
—--
By the time the carriage rolled to a stop, Penelope was ready to jump right out if it would stop her from being interrogated by what she felt for Viscount Francis. She was greeted by said man's hand outstretched, helping the redhead out of the Carriage with ease.
Hazel's eyes scanned the woman's figure, lingering on her chest before coming back to her ocean blues.
"You look magnificent my lady, blue matches you perfectly with your eyes and hair." lowering herself in a bow hiding her smiles, Penelope thanked the man as she gracefully took his arm in hers as they started their Promenade. "I have taken notice that you and the duke are quite close, were you two childhood friends?" "Oh no, not at all. Duke Basset and I met when I travelled with the Bridgertons to their family home for the off season. We were quick to realize how similar we are and the man has soon become someone I can think of as family." Humming, the man asked another question.
"And Viscount Bridgerton?" Penelope froze, her face blanking over the question, " Ant- Mr. Bridgerton? What about him?" She said, covering up her slight mistake. Francis turned to her with a small upturned lip. "I witnessed you two dance the night of Lady Danbury's ball, the way you act with one another it is almost like you have known each other forever."
Penelope took in his words, she wasn't aware that they acted much different then she does with the other Bridgertons. "That is quite true, I have known the Bridgertons since I was a child so forever was not too far off. Viscount and I did not really interact much when I was younger, but I have grown close to him, now at a more appropriate age."
Francis nodded, leading her to the gazebo to their left. "Would you say you two have a familial relationship?" Penelope's face soon flinched, " I would say more of a friendship than family as of now. Maybe the more we get to know each other it will go to that stage but at the moment I cherish him as a very close friend of mine." The conversation was soon changed to other subjects, getting familiar with one another as well as taking on some of their little habits.
The ride back to the Duke's was quiet as Penelope's head spun with all different thoughts, she said goodnight to Violet and Simon not noticing their concerned looks and got herself ready for bed.
Francis's words routed in her head, 'And you and Viscount Bridgerton?' What made him even think of such a thought? Did her relationship with Anthony look like that to the rest of the Ton? Does Anthony know? Why does her heart flutter and the idea of Her and Anthony as something more than friends?
Groaning, the redhead smothers herself in her pillow as images of the older man flood her head. His laugh and smile appearing more than once, she couldn't help her own smile creeping on her face. The bright eyes and handsome features lit up in candlelight when the two one evening had been reading in the library, with nothing but a book and each other's company.
Thinking about it now, Penelope had a habit of glancing at Anthony more often than not that afternoon. The redhead sprung up all of a sudden, eyes wide as she came to a conclusion.
"I like Anthony."

Chapter Text
Portia had decided to prepare a ball in honour of Prudence's engagement now that she has funds from her soon to be son in law. Penelope wanted nothing to do with said ball but Francis had asked in advance to dance with her and how could she refuse such an offer. She was well aware of her feelings for the Bridgerton man but the red head would be unintelligent if she was to put that ahead of the courtship she had with the man who had been nothing but kind and interested in not just her but everything that she surrounds herself with.
Her mother noticed the man and was thrilled to find out a possible second wedding could occur this season if everything went well. Penelope of course could not let her mother know that she took a liking to a Bridgerton nonetheless Anthony. The last thing she wanted to hear was being told how unfathom said relationship could possibly be. So she kept it to herself, Penelope had a feeling that Simon might know but thankfully if he did he kept it to himself.
"My lady, which frock were you thinking of tonight?" her maid, Grace asked as she suggested a few in her arm. It wasn't long before Penelope was done, her hair pulled to the side with loose but big curls framing her face with a certain beauty. She chose a dress slightly darker than emerald with the front cut to look like three different layers with fabric flowers lined in a beautiful line near the bottom. The finishing touch was the sewed in bow that held her bosoms in place while giving the best cleavage without looking desperate.
It's moments like these that truly make Penelope believe she is dreaming. If you spoke to Penelope last season about her wearing such a dress, she would think you were mocking her. But now, seeing herself in the mirror Penelope couldn't help but feel attractive. And all the attention she's been getting, the woman knew she was pretty and that men found her something nice to look at.
Thanking her maid, Penelope made her way to where Simon and Daphne were waiting with the carriage. Daphne was able to get a nurse in to look after Augie after the Duchess insisted on being there tonight for Penelope as her role as her mentor. The red head would be lying if she wasn't grateful that Daphne was coming as Penelope had a wary feeling that something was going to happen this evening whether good or bad.
Daphne saw her first and seeing the fond smile on the older woman's face gave a warmth feeling in the shorter woman's heart. "You look stunning Pen, Viscount Johnson will not know what hit him." Simon was quick to face her, a brotherly smile upon his lips, "My wife is as always, correct. You're a gem amongst the crowd, I will have to make sure that Francis keeps his hands to himself." The duke winced as a hand smacked in the head but his smile remained as Penelope giggled at his threat.
The ride to the ball didn't dwell on as the three conversed about everything and anything while Penelope and Simon occasionally bickered like siblings about some subjects. Penelope accepted Simon's help out of the carriage, Looking around and taking in the house that used to be her home. Following behind the Duke and Duchess, she noticed little tweaks that had been done to the home. Her stomach dropped, realising that it was almost like the house was glad she was gone and now could show it's true beauty without the wallflower around. Ignoring the feeling, Penelope splitted off with the Bassets and went to serve herself a drink. Needing to calm down before she did something that would quickly bite her back on the way back around.
"Miss featherington, you look exquisite this evening. It seems that every colour suits you quite well." A voice rang out from behind her, Twirling around she came face to face with a smiling Francis. His eyes taking in her appearance with what might be lust? Especially when the man's focus drew to her top half. Curtsying, -grinning internally when the man's hazel eyes seemed to almost go black-,Penelope greets the man with a polite upturn of her lips. "Good evening My lord, thank you for your kind words. You look quite dashing yourself." The two looked out to the dancers on the floor, Penelope starred as her eldest sister twirled around with a smile as her fiance watched with undeniable love shining in his eyes.
Her mother was in the wrong for what she had done, no daughter should be forced into a marriage over money but if Prudence's truly happy in said arrangement then Penelope will show nothing but support and happiness for her sister. The two weren't close and she doesn't believe that they ever will be but as long as the older woman is happy, Penelope wished nothing but the best luck in her new relationship. Prudence's eyes locked with hers, a noise fell out of lips startled when a smile was sent her way although she was quick to respond with one back to her oldest sister.
"I see you and your sister are quite close." Francis' voice startled her away from her thoughts, blue eyes took in the gentle hazels with a sense of something Penelope wasn't too sure about. "Ah, not entirely. Believe it or not but my sisters and I are the furthest from close." "Yet you still love and care for them?" Penelope glanced at Prudence then to her mother who was chatting with a group of ladies and lastly to her sister who remained close to Mr. Finch.
"Yes, I suppose so. We may not be close but they are the family I was given and nothing would stop me from ensuring they are looked after and cared for." A hand gently lifted hers as soft lips were placed ever so lightly on top. "You seem to always surprise me when we converse. However, I was promised a dance?" Penelope allowed herself to be led to the dance floor, eyes roaming the room only to land where the Bridgertons resided not too far from where she stood. Eloise and Violet's gaze were already bestowed upon her, Violet watching in a way a mother would have had their child been forced into a position while Eloise kept her glare towards Francis, making sure he wasn't making her best friend uncomfortable.
Before Penelope could ease their worries, the music quickly picked up into the Quadrille. Francis and Penelope bowed to one another as they were quickly led into the group dance, exchanging glances and small smiles. Penelope was led by a different partner, looking up with a polite smile only for it to drop once she saw who it was.
"Anthony? What are you doing here?" Her words stuttered as her feet followed along with the music. The man in question smirked while giving her a raised eyebrow, rolling her eyes, she smacked him in the arm lightly for his cheekiness.
"You know what I meant, you do not like dancing so why are you?" Anthony's smirk faltered a little but was soon back to normal, "I would not go as to say I dislike said skill, I only dance when I have found the perfect partner." Her heart fluttered with what the Bridgerton man was impling, skimming over his features Penelope couldn't detect any lie which only made her flush more.
Penelope took the offered hand as the dancers were brought into a group to finish off the dance, "To think that Lord Bridgerton just admitted such a thing with ease. I wonder how the mothers would feel when they learn that the Viscount has been holding out from dancing simply because their daughters were not up to his standards." She giggled softly as Anthony's eyes widened and searched around to make sure no older women were around to hear her words.
Anthony teasingly tugged on one of her curls as they bowed as the dance came to an end, "Miss Featherington if I did not know better I would think you are trying to get me in an early grave." Heading towards the Bridgertons, Penelope slowed slightly, "Now why would I ever dare to do such a thing, I might possibly be beheaded for getting rid of such a pretty face so soon." She brushed past the frozen Viscount and took her time to embrace the Bridgerton family.
Violet flanked her on her left with Eloise on her right, "Tell me my dear, has Lord Johnson been treating you right?" After having completely forgotten about Francis, Penelope gaze searches for him in the crowd. Spotting him on the opposite side of the dance floor, she watched him laugh with what she assumed were his friends with relaxation that she doesn't believe he had when the two ever spoke. His eyes found hers shortly after and glanced to the left of her, which she soon realised Francis was staring at Anthony who still seemed to be in a daze. The knowing look he gave her was all she needed as she smiled at him kindly.
"I think we have both agreed that being friends will workout better."

Chapter Text
"Eloise! You must make haste! If you do not come down these stairs in two minutes, I will not allow you to get the slightest amount of novels this week!" He was aware that black mailing his siblings wasn't the best idea, but Anthony knew that this was the only way to hurry his sister along. And he's proven correct not even a minute later when he caught sight of Eloise trotting down with a scowl on her lips.
Glaring, she ignored the stretched out arm and made her way to the carriage, but not before saying, "I want double the amount of books since you decided to threaten me with the one of the only things that bring me joy."
Not waiting for his response, he watched her climb into the carriage without a single glance his way. Sighing, Anthony rubbed his temples as he mentally took note of making an order for recently published books. The man settled into the shared carriage with his brothers with much more tiredness than before.
"My, my brother, we're not even at the ball and you already look like you want to walk up to the first person you see and beg them to put you out of your misery." The look sent his way had Benedict raising his hands in defeat while faking innocence. Colin, never knowing when to stop, nudged Benedict while sending a smirk to his oldest brother, " Worry not brother, Ant is sure to change mood once his eyes lay on our dearest Penelope."
The younger brothers chuckle at the Viscount's puzzled expression, his mind racing at what Colin could possibly be implying. However, he did not get much time to dissect such words as the Carriage soon jolted to a stop. Thankfully for the distraction, Anthony took the opportunity to distance himself from his brothers and was quick to meet his mother with an offered arm. Pretending to not see the smug looks on Benedict and Colin's faces, Anthony wasted no time in leading his family inside with too many thoughts invading his mind.
Feeling a slight tug on his sleeve, brown eyes met his mother's concerned blue ones. "
Is everything alright, dearest?" Not wanting to worry his mother anymore than he had, Anthony forced the best smile he could at the moment to his lips, "I am fine mother, just some unnecessary jesting on my brother's part which now confuses me." A knowing look overtook the worry in Violet's expression.
"This wouldn't perhaps have to do with Penelope?" Flinching at the slight mention of the fiery redhead gave the viscountess all the information she needed. "My dear, I have taken notice of how close you two have gotten during the off season. Is that all you feel for the young lady? Friendship?" Violet finds the youngest Featherington in the crowd, by the drinks talking with Viscount Johnson. Without his permission, Anthony's eyes followed her gaze to where the woman that seemed to constantly occupy his train of thoughts.
Something in his chest dropped as he watched her laugh at something the man said, head tilted to the side as her eyes kept eye contact. He witnessed on more than one occasion how Penelope glowed when she laughed, how her eyes expressed everything that she was feeling without her consent. How her body leans forward when a conversation intrigued her, her beautiful mind easily catching up with the subject spoken of.
Seeing the unknown man's eyes trail down the redhead's figure, pausing at the exposed cleavage before meeting the bright blue eyes once more. A hot flush of anger entered Anthony's head without him noticing, Violet on other hand could pinpoint the clenched jaw and the constant gaze on the pair. A part of her was thrilled, from the moment she met the redhead, Violet's greatest wish was for the young woman to join her family. Violet would be lying if she had been leading towards Colin asking for her hand in marriage, but as of late, seeing the way they are around one another she does not believe said event will happen.
Glancing at her eldest, the intense facial expression as he remained fixated on the pair, just maybe with a little push Violet might just get the daughter in law she always wanted. "I heard that Penelope and Lord Johnson were in the first stages of courtship, the two appear to be quite close on such short notice." This time she could hear her son's teeth grit against each other as he tried to calm himself. She decided to give one last push,"Yes, well I know how determined she is to find a husband while out of her mother's clutches but I do believe with the way the couple are going there just may be another wedding by the end of the season."
Anthony's hands balled up into a fist, listening to the change of music and the crowd of people strolling to the centre of the room, an idea came to him. Searching her in the crowd, Anthony bidded his mother a quick goodbye before heading to where the woman was standing with her husband. "Daph, please dance with me." Said woman exchanged a look with Simon but nonetheless placed her hand in his and allowed him to lead her to the dance floor. With the music started the two were quick to follow suit with the other dancers, Anthony keeping an eye on the fiery redhead never letting her escape his eyesight.
"Brother, mind explaining why you pleaded for me to dance as well as your constant gaze on a certain mentee of mine?" Flicking his stare to her, an almost amused look on her face. "I am merely keeping an eye on Pen with the way Lord Johnson was looking at her, I only wish that he does not take advantage of her."
"And the glaring? If looks could kill, lord Johnson would have died on the spot." He spluttered at his sister's words, listening to her laugh as he stumbled to keep up to the dance moves while still caught off guard. He instead concentrated back on Penelope, taking notice that with the partner swap soon, she will be with him.
Daphne examined her brother, the way his eyes remained in one direction but his body tended to turn to the side the pair he was watching were. Realisation breezed through her when seeing the burning look in his eyes, when his jaw clenched when Penelope's laugh swept through the ballroom. "Jealous." Was blurted out before she could stop it, Anthony stared at her as wonder overtook his face. "You're jealous. Of lord Joshnson."
Understanding swept on his facials, Daphne observed the multiple emotions that Anthony went through until what seemed to be horror settled onto his handsome features. "I like Penelope…" He whispered, eyes snapping to the woman in question. The horror left not too long after as he witnessed the happiness radiating from her. "Oh…"
"And here is your chance to show her just how much." Daphne pushed away from him to claim her new partner, who just so happened to be Lord Johnson himself. The two danced with slight awkwardness til the man spoke up, "Those two have something, do they not?" Following his gaze to where Penelope was giggling while Anthony seemed to frantically look around. She was able to witness the sweet smile he sent her when she wasn't looking, "As much as they denied it, I too believe that they have something that most women dream for in the time era."
"Which is?"
"Love
