Chūnin Finals: Part 7
or
Burning Down the House... err, Puppet: Sasuke Unleashes the Flames, Kankuro Gets Owned, and the Second Round Shenanigans Begin!
Hayate Gekkō cleared his throat, his voice echoing across the muddy arena. "Alright," he announced, glancing between the contestants' boxes. "The next match will be Uchiha Sasuke of Konohagakure... versus... Kankuro of Sunagakure."
A murmur rippled through the Konoha stands as Sasuke Uchiha stepped forward. His cerulean blue eyes, sharp and focused, scanned the arena. He carried a quiet confidence, his hands relaxed but ready.
From the Sunagakure section, Kankuro emerged, his face paint stark against his skin. He hefted the large, cloth-wrapped bundle on his back, a knowing smirk playing on his lips. "Well, well," Kankuro drawled, his dark eyes meeting Sasuke's. "Looks like it's your turn to dance." He descended to the arena floor with a theatrical flourish.
Raiura watched Sasuke, a slight frown creasing her brow. "Be careful, Sasuke," she murmured under her breath, a hint of concern in her cerulean eyes. Beside her, Naruto remained silent, his gaze fixed on Sasuke with an intensity that spoke volumes. Hinata offered a quiet, "Good luck, Sasuke-kun," her voice barely audible.
In the Kage box, Hiruzen watched Sasuke with a thoughtful expression. "Let's see what you've learned, Sasuke," he murmured. Rasa observed Kankuro impassively. "Don't underestimate the Uchiha," he cautioned quietly to his siblings.
Hayate gestured between the two genin. "Are both contestants ready?" he asked.
"Born ready," Kankuro replied with a wider smirk, adjusting the bundle on his back.
Sasuke simply nodded, his gaze unwavering.
"Then... Hajime!" Hayate declared, stepping back.
The moment the signal was given, the tension in the arena thickened. Sasuke's Sharingan remained hidden, but his stance was alert. Kankuro's smirk widened, his fingers twitching subtly near the strings concealed within his puppet. The match between Uchiha skill and Sunagakure puppetry was about to begin.
From their vantage point in the stands, the Jonin Sensei watched Sasuke step into the arena, a familiar mix of pride and apprehension among them.
"Sasuke's looking focused," Asuma Sarutobi commented, taking a drag from his cigarette. "He's got the talent, no doubt about that."
Kurenai Yuhi nodded in agreement, her crimson eyes narrowed slightly. "He's come a long way. After… everything," she trailed off, a subtle understanding passing between the Konoha Jonin. "He's handled things with a maturity I wouldn't have expected a year ago."
Gai Maito struck a dramatic pose, a wide grin on his face. "Indeed! The flames of youth burn brightly within young Sasuke! He possesses the inner strength to overcome any obstacle!"
Kakashi Hatake, however, watched Kankuro with a more discerning gaze. "Don't underestimate the Sunagakure shinobi," he said, his visible eye narrowed slightly. "Puppet masters can be tricky opponents. Sasuke will need to be cautious. Kankuro's movements suggest a certain level of skill in manipulation." He then turned his gaze back to Sasuke, a hint of warning in his tone. "Sasuke, remember what we've discussed. Focus on the opponent, not on proving anything."
Asuma flicked ash from his cigarette. "Kakashi's right. Sasuke's got a tendency to get tunnel vision. Hopefully, he'll keep a cool head."
Kurenai nodded again. "He's worked hard on that. Shisui's… guidance has been invaluable." A shared understanding of the Uchiha prodigy's past struggles and his progress hung in the air among the Konoha Jonin. They held their breath, hoping Sasuke would approach this new challenge with the level-headedness he had worked so hard to achieve.
The moment Hayate's signal echoed through the arena, Sasuke moved with a speed that belied his composed exterior. He closed the distance between himself and Kankuro in a blur, his movements precise and economical. His hands flashed through a swift series of hand seals, "Katon: Gōkakyū no Jutsu (Fire Release: Great Fireball Technique)!" he declared, his voice low and controlled.
A massive sphere of fire erupted from his mouth, a swirling inferno of intense heat and destructive power. The fireball hurtled towards Kankuro, its flames illuminating the arena with an orange glow, casting dancing shadows on the muddy ground.
Kankuro, a sly smirk still playing on his painted lips, reacted to Sasuke's sudden fiery assault with surprising agility for someone carrying a bulky bundle. He sidestepped the massive fireball with an almost mocking ease, the intense heat washing over him but not touching him. His dark eyes never left Sasuke, observing the Uchiha's movements with keen interest.
"Not bad, kid," Kankuro drawled, his voice laced with amusement. "But you'll need more than hot air to take me down." As Sasuke's momentum carried him forward, Kankuro's fingers twitched subtly beneath the cloth wrapping on his back. Suddenly, the bundle shifted violently, and a section of the cloth tore away, revealing a grotesque, puppet-like figure with sharp claws and a menacing grin.
Before Sasuke could fully adjust his stance after unleashing the Great Fireball, Kankuro manipulated the puppet with practiced precision. The puppet lunged forward with surprising speed, its razor-sharp claws aimed directly at Sasuke.
Sasuke's Sharingan finally activated, the crimson tomoe swirling in his now red eyes as he processed the sudden appearance and attack of Kankuro's puppet. His movements became even more precise, his enhanced vision allowing him to track the puppet's rapid advance. He swiftly sidestepped the puppet's initial claw strike, the sharp edges whistling past his face.
Sasuke launched a series of quick taijutsu strikes at the puppet. His fists and feet moved with practiced efficiency, aiming for the joints and less armored sections of the wooden construct. The puppet was surprisingly agile, Kankuro's expert manipulation allowing it to parry and evade some of Sasuke's blows with its own sharp limbs. The clang of wood against flesh echoed in the arena.
Kankuro chuckled, his smirk widening. "Not so easy when your opponent doesn't bleed, is it, little Uchiha?" he taunted, his fingers dancing subtly as he controlled the puppet's movements. The puppet's attacks became more aggressive, its claws lashing out with surprising speed and ferocity, forcing Sasuke to focus on defense as well as offense.
Sasuke, his Sharingan analyzing the puppet's movements and Kankuro's subtle finger twitches, began to adapt. He noticed the slight delays between Kankuro's movements and the puppet's reactions, the telltale signs of the puppeteer's control. He knew that to truly defeat Kankuro, he would eventually need to bypass the puppet and target the user himself.
Sasuke, his Sharingan blazing, saw an opportunity amidst the puppet's relentless assault. He channeled his chakra, focusing it on his next attack. "Katon: Hōsenka no Jutsu (Fire Release: Phoenix Flower Jutsu)!" he exclaimed, unleashing a barrage of small, intense fireballs.
Unlike the larger, single fireball before, these smaller projectiles were designed for precision and spread. They streaked towards the puppet from multiple angles, aiming not just to damage but to overwhelm its defenses.
Kankuro, caught slightly off guard by the change in tactics, manipulated the puppet frantically. He tried to swat away the fireballs, but their sheer number made it difficult. Several of the fireballs struck the puppet, and the wood began to char and burn.
The smell of burning wood filled the arena, mingling with the dust and sweat. The puppet's movements became more erratic as the flames spread, hindering Kankuro's control.
Sasuke pressed his advantage, following up the fire jutsu with a series of quick taijutsu strikes. He aimed for the puppet's joints, now weakened by the fire, and with a final, powerful kick, he shattered one of its arms.
Kankuro gritted his teeth, his smirk faltering. He realized that his puppet was being overwhelmed. He quickly recalled the puppet back to his bundle.
With the puppet temporarily out of commission, Sasuke and Kankuro faced each other directly. The atmosphere in the arena shifted, the focus narrowing to the two genin themselves.
Sasuke's Sharingan continued to analyze Kankuro's movements, searching for any opening. He knew that even without the puppet, Kankuro was still a skilled opponent. Kankuro, his expression now serious, reached into his own ninja tool pouch. He pulled out several kunai, his movements precise and practiced. The two genin charged at each other, their clash a flurry of taijutsu and weaponry. Kunai met fist, and feet struck with sharp force.
Sasuke's speed and agility, enhanced by his Sharingan, allowed him to evade Kankuro's kunai strikes. He countered with his own attacks, his movements fluid and powerful. The Suna Puppetier was skilled, but the Uchiha's determination and the power of his Sharingan gave him an edge. He pushed Kankuro back, forcing him onto the defensive.
The fight raged on, each genin pushing their limits. The crowd watched with bated breath, captivated by the intensity of the battle. Finally, after a prolonged exchange, Sasuke managed to disarm Kankuro. He held a kunai to Kankuro's throat, his Sharingan gleaming. Kankuro, breathing heavily, stared up at Sasuke. He knew he was defeated.
A flicker of frustration crossed his face, but he ultimately accepted his loss. "I... I surrender," he said, his voice hoarse.
Hayate Gekkō stepped forward, his voice clear and authoritative. "The match is over! Uchiha Sasuke is the winner!"
The crowd erupted in cheers, their applause filling the arena. Sasuke lowered his kunai, his chest rising and falling with exertion. Kankuro stepped back, a grudging respect in his eyes. He had underestimated the Uchiha, but he wouldn't make that mistake again. Sasuke had won, but the match had been a hard-won victory. He had proven his skill and his growth, but he also knew that there were still many challenges ahead.
Ino Yamanaka clapped her hands together, a dreamy look in her eyes. "Sasuke-kun did it! He's so amazing!" she gushed, her fangirl enthusiasm on full display. "That fire jutsu was just... swoon!"
Sakura Haruno smiled softly, a fond look in her emerald eyes. "He did great," she said, her voice calm and supportive. "He's really improved a lot."
Shikamaru Nara, predictably, yawned widely. "Troublesome," he muttered, his gaze still fixed on the arena. "Another long, drawn-out fight. At least it's over now."
Kiba Inuzuka, with Akamaru barking excitedly at his feet, puffed out his chest. "Hmph! Sasuke's alright, I guess. But me and Akamaru could have taken that puppet down even faster with our Fang Over Fang!" Akamaru barked again in enthusiastic agreement.
Shino's gaze shifted slightly towards Kiba, his tone even and measured. "Such a hypothesis is illogical. In the preliminary matches, Raiura-san decisively defeated you. Therefore, her capabilities exceed yours, and by extension, may exceed Uchiha Sasuke's current level." A few beetles flew subtly around Shino, adding to the slightly unsettling effect.
Kiba's face flushed with annoyance. "Hey! That was just a fluke! I was caught off guard, that's all! I'm way stronger now!" He crossed his arms, looking away in a huff. Akamaru whined softly, sensing Kiba's irritation.
Hinata stepped forward gently, her lavender eyes calm. "Kiba-kun, there's no need to get upset. Shino-kun was simply stating a fact. Raiura-chan is very strong, and Sasuke-kun is strong in his own way. It's not a competition." She placed a reassuring hand on Kiba's arm. "We're all improving."
Raiura smiled softly, her cerulean eyes reflecting a genuine pride. "He's come so far," she murmured, mostly to herself, remembering the Sasuke from a year ago.
"I told you he had it in him!" Ino chirped, nudging Sakura playfully. "You were doubting him!"
"Hey! I just said he did great," Sakura retorted, rolling her eyes good-naturedly. "That doesn't mean I was doubting him."
Shikamaru sighed again. "Can't you two ever just be quiet?"
Kiba scoffed. "They're all making such a big deal out of it. It was just one fight." Akamaru whined softly, nudging Kiba's hand.
Tenten shook her head, a small smile playing on her lips. "Well, it was a good fight. Sasuke's definitely gotten stronger."
Naruto's blue eyes remained fixed on the arena, a flicker of... something... passing across his face. He gave a short, firm nod, a subtle gesture of agreement with Hinata's words. It wasn't enthusiastic agreement, but it was there.
Hayate Gekkō stepped forward, his voice echoing through the arena. "Alright, everyone," he announced, his gaze sweeping across the crowd and the remaining genin. "That concludes the first round of the Chūnin Finals."
A murmur rippled through the stands as the audience processed the results of the intense matches. Some cheered, others groaned in disappointment, but all were eager to see what would come next.
Hayate Gekkō stepped forward, his posture straight despite the slight tremor in his voice. "*cough*... that concludes the first round of the Chūnin Finals," he announced, his gaze sweeping across the arena. "The matches have been... enlightening." He paused, a slight cough escaping him. "*cough*... the genin have demonstrated... considerable skill and... determination."
A murmur rippled through the crowd, a mix of excitement and anticipation for what was to come. The Jonin Sensei watched with a mixture of pride and apprehension, aware that the stakes were only going to get higher.
Hayate cleared his throat again, a slightly more forceful cough this time. "Now... we will proceed with the second round," he continued, his voice regaining some of its strength. "The matches will be... conducted in the same *cough* manner as before. One-on-one... until a victor is decided."
He unfolded a scroll, his eyes scanning the names listed. "The first match of the second round *cough* will be..." he paused for dramatic effect, letting the tension build, "...Misumi Tsurugi of Otogakure..."
Another pause, this one slightly longer, as he seemed to gather himself. "... *cough* versus... Umatani Ori of Iwagakure."
The crowd erupted in a buzz of speculation. Misumi Tsurugi was known for his... unusual techniques, while Umatani Ori, as they might recall, had displayed a stoic demeanor and earth-style ninjutsu in his previous match. This promised to be an interesting clash of styles.
