What you just saw was the intro to the popular 60s show The Sonic The Hedgehog Show.
The series was revolutionary at the time. Starting in 1960, the show became an overnight success.
It was the first TV show to star a Japanese cast and the first show to use superpowers as a plot point, with Sonic's super speed and Silver's Telekinesis. At some point, it was even competing with the second biggest show at the time, I Love Luigi.
But now it was modern times and The STH Show had long since ended and had two spinoffs about Shadow and Silver. There were plans for a reboot, but that's been in development hell since the 90s.
And now the big question remains:
Where were the STH cast now?
It was a sunny day in Green Hill University. Inside the Starlight dormitory were four college students: Tangle the Lemur, Whisper the Wolf, Surge the Tenrec and Jewel the Beetle. These girls were watching all eight seasons of The STH Show. Thanks to the school's library, they were able to rent all the VHS tapes with their ID cards. They would have to return them at the end of semester.
"Wow, that scene with the turkeys might be the funniest scene in the series so far!" Tangle says.
"Are you kidding? It has to be the factory scene!" Surge says. "I heard they had to reshoot that scene twice because the camera crew couldn't stop laughing."
"I like the scene with Amy waiting for the bus," Whisper says. They all nodded, agreeing with her.
"Well, I can't argue with that," Tangle says.
Jewel finishes writing something down in her little notebook.
"And that's the entire series. All 200 something episodes," Jewel says. "I never thought film class would require this amount of work."
The four of them were currently doing their final exam for their film appreciation class. They were supposed to pick an old tv show and do an essay on where the current cast were doing today and stuff like that.
The four of them decided first that they were gonna watch the entire series to get an idea of the show and see why it was so beloved all these years later.
When they were renting the DVDs, the librarian, who was a fan of the show, recommended they skip the spinoff series since it's apparently not that good.
"Hey so, how are we gonna be able to do the next half of the project?" Tangle said. "You know, the 'Where Are They Now' segment?"
"I assume we can just go online and look it up?" Whisper asks.
"Yeah, but where's the fun in that?" Tangle asks. "Wouldn't it be more fun to, ya know…talk to the stars themselves?"
All three girls turn to look at Tangle.
"You're joking, right?" Surge says. "You expect us, some broke college nobodies, to somehow strike an interview with the cast of an old 60s TV show? They're all probably dead by now."
"Now hold on Surge," Jewel says. "Last I heard, most of the cast is very much still alive and well. But not everyone has their own Wikipedia page, nor have they been seen in the spotlight in years. When was the last time we heard from Sonic himself? 1985, when he was asked about a potential movie."
Jewel holds up her book of notes she took during the binge and also from her own personal research.
"Amy Rose has her own TV show, Shadow lives a secluded life in Palm Springs. Even the Babylon Rogues, who only appeared in two episodes, make regular appearances at conventions," Jewel said. "I think if we ask nicely, they would be happy to tell us about their time on the show."
"Again, I will repeat," Surge said. "How the hell are we going to be able to talk to them? They're busy celebrities and were just some college kids."
"Oh!" Jewel says with a knowing smile. "I think I might know someone."
The scene cuts to the four girls back at the library. Greeting them was the librarian, Miss Victoria.
"Hello again, girls," Victoria says. "Have you already finished the VHS tapes?"
"Yes, but we had a question," Tangle says. "You're a big fan of The Sonic the Hedgehog Show, correct?"
"Yep. No shame in that," Victoria says. "I have been a fan of the show since high school. In college, my friends and I would have parties where we would go to each other's dorms and eat pizza while the new episode premiered. In 1978, we found the official fanclub, the Green Hill Hedgehogs, named after the town of Green Hill where the show takes place."
"So you must've known a lot of the cast, huh?" Whisper says.
"Yep," Victoria says. "They were thrilled to work with us. They used to contact us about meet and greets and special events, and they were some of the nicest people. Shadow once paid for my ticket to Chemical Plant Con when I had just lost my job. Such a nice guy. It's a shame they've all drifted apart since Sonic disappeared in '85."
"Are you still in contact with them?" Jewel says.
"Everyone except Robotnik, Mighty, Knack, and Vector," Victoria said. "If you girls want, we can make arrangements to meet the cast. It could help with your school project. But I must warn you, they are very busy actors and most of them probably want to move on from the STH show."
"Well, we need that grade to pass," Surge says. "Maybe we can meet them at a reunion panel or something."
"A reunion panel?" Victoria asks, shocked. "Well the cast would never do one without Sonic. If we can somehow get a hold of him, I'm sure they would love to. But like I said, Sonic hasn't been seen in years. Who knows what he could be doing?"
"I heard some of the cast are going to this year's Chemical Plant Con," Jewel says. "Do you think you can help us meet them?"
"Oh, I think I'm working that weekend," Victoria says. "As much as I would like to go, I'm not the young Sonic fan I used to be. But since my brother works there, I can get you four all weekend passes."
"Really? You'd do that for us?" Surge asks.
"Of course," Victoria says. "It is my duty as a staff of Green Hill U to ensure that every student succeeds."
"Thank you so much," Tangle says. "We appreciate the help" She then turns to her friends.
"Well gang, looks like we have a mission!" Tangle said, "Find the actors of the Sonic the Hedgehog Show, get their interviews, and ace that final exam!"
The four of them fist bumped and headed back to their dorm. So now their plan was in motion: Find the cast, get interviews, and discover the real story of The Sonic The Hedgehog Show.
Surely nothing can go wrong, right?
