Still in pure and utter awe at what he was looking at, Paul was seeing his babysitter revealed as the town's superhero. "Oh my gosh." said Paul. "You're Volcano Girl?"
"Not so loud." Lori chuckled.
"Oh, that's right." Paul realized. "It's a superhero thing to keep their identities a secret from everyone else."
"Right!" then Lori sat back down. "So Paul, maybe your webbed feet is a sign."
"That i'm a freak?"
"No! No, no, no, no, no, no, of course not." the teen girl nodded her head sideways. "No! It means you are someone special."
Silent for a moment, Paul had an idea, "do you think you can light those mean kids at school on fire?"
"No! Absolutely not! I'm a superhero and i never kill in cold-blood. Besides; if i did that, I would be sentenced to life in prison for it. That, and i would literally have to feel the wrath of a lot of angry parents of those kids."
"Oh yeah." Paul realized.
"But, i have a better idea." Lori suggested, "just say you know Volcano Girl and if they try to mess with you again, scare them by threatening to tell me on them."
"Yep, that does sound like a better idea." The kid admitted
"plus tell the teacher if there are any more bullies in school." Lori added. "Never hurts to do that."
"OK, Lori."
"And you will keep this a secret from everyone else, right?"
"Got it." The kid pretended to zip his lips as a sworn oath to Lori. "I won't tell anyone else."
"Thank you, sweetie." The teenage superhero smiled gratefully. "So it's about dinner time. What would you like, Paul?"
"some mac n cheese. There's boxes of them in the upper left cupboard." He pointed to the very shelf in the kitchen. Lori smiled and went to the kitchen to fetch the boy his dinner. It was very easy to make, and while waiting for his dinner to be ready, Paul was thinking about Lori's words and was starting to let them sink into his head. Yes, maybe he wasn't a freak after all. Lori is right, no one really choses how they are born to live the world.
Yes, perhaps Paul is being too hard on himself. To him, it is a miracle to have Volcano Girl be his own babysitter tonight. He hoped that when his parents go out like that again, Volcano Girl can watch over him and keep him company again. She is a very nice girl that had ten siblings and does her best to keep them all under control.
"OK! It's ready." Lori sang as she went into the kitchen to give the boy his dinner.
"So Lori," said Paul, "how did you get your powers?"
Pausing for a brief moment, Lori replied at last; I got a tanning bed as a prize for winning the golf tournament a few months ago, and i accidentally slept in the thing for too long, so the radioactive stuff got into my skin and... here i am. In short, it was the radioactive energy that made me a superhero. Though it was an accident, it was the greatest accident that happened to me."
"Wow." said the little boy
"Yeah, wow." Lori smiled. "And to let you know, Paul, even if you don't have a lot of friends, you will always have at least one friend in your life."
"Well, i did i have one friend in my life, but he moved away to Tucson two months ago. His mom got a job their."
"Oh." the teenage superhero, once more, gave him a sympathetic look. "I'm sorry."
"It's ok. I still talk to Toby online and on my phone."
"Look, just be more open about making some friends. Just walk up to someone and get to know them more."
"You know what Lori, you're right."
"And don't listen to what people say about your web feet being weird. My sister Lisa got herself into some crazy things with her inventions and it got her bald one time. Granted, she is a genius sister that invents literal crazy things, but still. The point is; nobody is perfect, and i bet even some of the kids who tease you have their own things and habits that they don't even share to their closest friends."
"Huh. Well maybe there's a way to expose their secrets to everyone at school." Paul then got a sneaky look on their faces. "That way, they'll know how it feels to be teased."
"Whoa whoa whoa, wait." Lori gently stopped him. "I understand how you're feeling. But you can't just take revenge on them. If you do, you'll stoop to their level. And you don't want to be like them, do you?"
"But, what can i do?"
"Ignore their name-calling and just crry on with your life. You'll always have one friend."
"Besides you?" asked Paul
Lori made a small chuckle before saying: "Yes. Of course. Just go talk to someone in your class and see if he or she likes the same things as you do."
"Well, ok."
"So you want to watch a movie?" asked the fire girl.
"Sure." they sat on the couch together to watch "The Tiger Prince" together and Lori even made a big bowl of popcorn to share with the kid. So far, Paul was having a good time with his new babysitter.
"I forgot to ask," the teen girl remembered, "What happened to your old babysitter?"
"She got strep throat and has to stay in bed for a while."
"ooh." Lori got an uncomfortable look on her face. "Hope she feels better soon."
"Thanks."
This is turning out to be a good night for both of them as they were watching a nice, timeless film together, and Paul was already starting to call Luna one of her own friends. Sure, he liked his old babysitter, but he hoped that Lori will be a regular too. Yes, he really liked Lori a good deal, even better that she is the famous fire-themed superhero that every good person in town adores.
