Twins missing in Dual worlds Chapter 35: Mabel of the Year
It was a warm morning. Mayor Croaker had made a big announcement, and there was a massive crowd. Hop Pop wanted the family there, even if he didn't explain to Mabel why this was so important.
Mabel yawned. "Mornings like this are kind of nice."
"Mabel, aren't you excited?" She asked, practically vibrating at this.
"For what?"
"It's the announcement of the Frog of the Year competition, we finally find out who won our town respect enough for the title." Sprig said. "We Voted last week."
"Oh right." She said, not remembering.
"Yes, everybody dreams to win and this year I am sure a Planter will win it." He said.
Mabel started to smile. "I think so too. " With everything Hop Pop has done, she expects him to win.
"Okay, everyone now for the moment you've all been waiting for...drum roll please." She said, having a drummer around somewhere. Mabel trying to see where it is… "The winner of "Frog of The Year" will give the next runner will take the title." She said.
Mabel was curious about who the previous one was.
"And the frog of the year for this year, for real this time is, are you all ready?"
"On with it already!" Polly said.
"Show us the goods!" Hop Pop agrees.
"Mabel Pines." She said, proudly. Surprise honestly.
"It should be hop pop!" She slammed the ground.
The mayor rubbed her temples, "Mabel that means, you won." She said, "And I can say no one else deserves it more."
"What? Me?" She blushed. "But but…"
"Come on Turtleneck, go and give a speech." She said, as the Planters gently pushed her up to the stage. The town started to chant, "Speech! Speech! Speech! Speech!"
Mabel steadied herself on the stage and looked out at everyone. "Well hello wartwood!" She started. "I guess I want to start with a thank you. To the planter family for taking me in and making me feel like I'm part of their family."
"That's my roommate!" Sprig yelled out, trying to show off his much support her has. "She made that sweater herself, I saw her do it."
"Sprig you are embarrassing her!" Polly said.
"Kids, you are missing Mabel's speech, it sounds like a good one too." He said holding them apart.
"When I first got teleported to this world. I admit. I was a little freaked out." Getting behind the podium. Hop Pop was proud, glad that they were able to find her even if she had some growing pains. "So. Thank you. Everyone. For welcoming me to your world."
"Looking forward to the party!" Wally said up, the rest of the town chanted in solidarity with the vagabond.
"I mean. I can't believe I'm frog of the year. I don't feel like I deserve it."
"I say." Toadstool said, "She probably does not even know what this award is about does she."
"Hey! Just because I don't know the ins and outs of this whole thing doesn't mean I don't appreciate it!"
"I bet she doesn't even know about the party." He said.
"Mabel, don't you listen to him..." He was interrupted.
"Even if he is correct."
"Sprig, you are not helping." Polly scold.
"Party? I am great at parties! Someone tell me the kind of party."
"Mabel, you're the one that's supposed to be hosting it. So you decided." Hop Pop said, "Note to self explain more stuff to Mabel when have time." He said, pulling out a pen and paper to do so.
Mabel grinned. "I get to host a party, do I? Yes!"
"And the Planters support you all the way." Hop Pop yelled over the crowd.
"We're at your service." Hop Pop said as everyone else in town went to their homes to get ready.
"Oh, this is gonna be fun," Mabel said, happily rubbing her hands together at the thought.
"This is going to be a disaster." He said, "Come Toadie we have to get dressed for the party."
"See you at the party?" Mabel asked, she could never read that dude.
"And he is gone, luckily he is out of hearing range. That makes things easier to talk bad about him." Hop Pop said.
"True that, Hop Pop. He stinks." Polly told her patriarch.
"So like are there any rules to this party?" Mabel asked.
"Try not to kill anyone, it is less of a rule and more of an ideology for life in general." Hop Pop said.
"Hah. You're silly." Mabel said.
"I'm serious, please don't get anyone killed." He said, "I care for you, but you are still well." Gesturing with both hands towards her.
"Mabalazing?" Maybe it Mabeling.
"Good word, I am going to make that a word." He said.
"Don't worry, I already told Ivy and Maddie so we have the calvary." Sprig said he had a feeling about this.
"So first we need a theme for the party," She starts to pace back and forth.
"The theme is Mabel." Sprig said, "We can have giant sweaters everywhere."
"Ok yes!" She was getting very hyped.
"So where do we start?" Polly asked. "And what was that about having fire parties?" Remembering some of the terms Mabel used.
"Oh boy oh yes. Ok, I need a lot of Wool." She was salivating at all the sweaters she could make.
"Don't worry, we can find you some." Polly promise.
"Did someone say fireworks?" Ivy said, making herself known.
"Nope, but I'll take 'em!" Mabel said.
"I made these out of the spines of insane convicts, the scream of their doom souls shall be heard throughout the town." Maddie said, "What?" She asked when people were looking at her.
"Now where to find enough wool," Mabel changed the topic. Rubbing her chin in deep thought, sticking her bottom lip out in response.
"I know a place for that, there are some wild Wooley bugs they should have all we need," Ivy said.
"Excellent! Let's harvest some!" Mabel said, ready to go.
"Hey Mabel, maybe we should plans for everything before going off?" He asked.
"Right. Good idea. I'll collect the wool and get knitting. And I'll have each of you doing a task."
"I can do that, I can do anything." He grabbed Mabel by the sweater, "I can kill a man for you."
"Sprig, take a chill pill," Polly said.
"Maybe later. For now, I want you and Ivy to make streamers." Mabel said.
"I get to use sharp objects?" She asked, her eyes widen out.
"Sure! I see no way this can backfire." Mabel said.
"Before my better sense comes to me, anything else?"
"We need food. I'm thinking of a breakfast theme." Mabel's favorite meal of the day.
"You sure seem to like breakfast food." Sprig said.
She smiled a little sadly. "Reminds me of home."
"Oh, don't worry I know a mean choco bug crepe recipe." Hop Pop said, "They are like pancakes for fancy people."
"Excellent!" She declared. "And Polly you can be the bouncer."
"I get to control who comes in and who leaves?" She saw Mabel nod her head, "I am going to abuse this power immediately."
Mabel patted her head. "Awww. You're cute when you're power-hungry."
"And what will Sprig do?" Ivy asked.
"Sprig has a very special job. He's gonna set the tables and the stage."
"He does have a talent for stealing the show "
"See? It's perfect. Oh yeah, it all coming together." Mabel said.
Maddie tapped her fingers together, once with one, then two then three then all of them, she did the same thing to her other hand.
"Maddie, what ARE you doing?" Ivy asked.
"trying to see how many ways this can go wrong, and I am out of fingers."
"Onward to the Wollie bugs!" Mabel said, pointing towards adventure as she asked.
"I'll show you the way. Maddie, you help Sprig." Ivy said.
"Good idea. She can handle Sprig."Mabel said, antsy for adventure.
"Hopefully not too much," Maddie said, giving a wink at them.
"Don't worry Maddie is smart."
"Well let's hop to it," Ivy said leading the way.
The road was dusty with a little plant, the path was a little out of the way but it was the only place to get the wool.
As they reach the farm, the fence seems to have what looks like giant clouds for them. Then, one turn reveals something: the top half of it faces a lamb, and the lower half bugs Mandibles, looking at them.
"Cute and creepy. I like 'em." Mabel said.
"If we sheer just one of them, that should do, Be careful the wool is as big as you are tall."
"I've never met wool I can't handle," she brushed off the danger.
She gave her the look, "Are you suuure, girl?" Her left eyebrow proudly raises in response.
"Pfft!" She just jumped in without thinking.
"Mabel." She noticed that Mabel's arms were getting tangled up." Now her legs, "Mabel." Then her neck, "Maybe it would help if you used some sheers."
Mabel replied with something. But her mouth was covered by wool b
She leaps forward grabbing her, "Okay, on the count of three, reach forward as I pull. One, two...three." She said tugging on Mabel's arms.
Mabel grabbed onto his.
"Man, you are really in there." She said, managing to get her out but the landing was a bit painful.
Mabel mumbled something
"Err umm, how do I say this you got mud on your sweater." She said, Ivy didn't mind it herself but had the feeling Mabel wouldn't have.
This upset Mabel enough that she ripped through the wool. "What!? THIS IS MY FAVORITE SWEATER!"
"Umm, I said, that you got some mud on your sweater." She said, noticing that she was having a bad day.
"So of course," Mabel said.
"Don't worry, I umm think you could pull off the wild woman in the sweater look." She was mentally kicking herself as she spoke.
"I look terrible!"
"I am sure we can find something nice once we get back to town, we should get the wool anyway it going to be messy anyways.*
"Oh, those things better give me all their wool!"
"Only if you remember to get the tools for the job this time around."
"Right. What should I use again?"
"I think there are some sheers over here." She said leaping near a rusty table, grabbing a bunch of junk, a hammer, some comically large scissors, a violin for some reason, and finally a sheep bug sheer.
Mabel, with a lot of help from Ivy, managed to corner and sheer the massive creature.
"You okay?" The wool could get heavy, so she went to the other side, *I can help."
She hesitated. She had wanted to do this on her own to thank everyone for electing her frog of the year. But it was becoming overwhelming. "Ya. I could use the help."
She happily sheers the sheep, wanting to make sure that she ends up with enough wool for Mabel, "How are you holding Mabel?"
"I'm doing good." She's collected so much wool.
Once mostly done, "I got some bags for us." She said giving Mabel a big side of a parachute to Mabel.
Mabel started shoving wool in the bags. "Good idea)
"Thanks, I am smarter than the average frog."
"and yet you love sprig."
"What no," Ivy said in denial and blushing.
"It's all good girl. Sometimes we just like someone stupid. One time I had a crush on a guy obsessed with puppets."
"That might have been a red flag." She said, "Wait didn't you make that puppet show, what ever happened to that?"
"Oh it had an explosive finale," Mabel grinned.
"Oh, that's where the other half of the town fireworks stock went." She said.
"Ha!"
"Well we got all we can do from here, let's see what damage Sprig and the others are doing."
"Oh, I'm sure everything is fine."
Ivy looked at her bemused, "Sure."
Down the road:
Mabel and Ivy walked in and saw a massive mess all over the area. Confetti was everywhere. Nothing was ready.
"Guys come on now, wha happun?" Ivy asked.
"Errrg the party is ruined!"
"Don't be like that, you fix far worse than this, remember Stumpy?" Ivy asked.
"Ya, his restaurant was messed up."
"And you fix it all by yourself. Come on let's get to work."
"Alright!" She stepped forward. "Get together everyone! We have work to do!"
They all gathered up and went to explain what went wrong. But it was too much for Mabel to hear.
"Enough! One at a time people!" Mabel ordered.
Maddie raised her hand as if she was a student at school.
"You!" She said, pointing a finger at the witch.
"I tried to get the ribbons to cut faster, but they came alive and started to attack anyone near them."
"How did they come alive?" She asked carefully.
"I used a spell on them." She said.
"So let's not do that," Mabel's face palmed.
"I know that now, what is your plan for dealing with them now?"
"How do we utilize them?"
"The book says it requires some non-organic liquid adhesive, but who in the world knows what that could be," Maddie explains.
Mabel's eyes lit up. "I do!" She grinned and grabbed something from her crafting bag. "Good thing I still have some. It's from my world. Glitter glue!"
She grabbed a bottle and sprayed it on the ribbon grabbing her by the left foot, once the sticky substance landed on the ribbon it let go.
"Glitter glue wins again." She said, throwing her fist in the air in excitement.
"Thanks, although I might have to use quite a bit of it." She said, "How much do you get?"
Mabel pulled out ten tubes all of different colors.
"I might have to use a lot of that, is that okay?" She asked.
Mabel didn't want to lose all of her glitter glue. But now it is for the best. "Use what you need."
Maddie smiled, "Thank you."
Mabel then went to sprig. "Ok. What happened? And don't say it's not your fault."
"I kinda drop some of the plates." He wanted to help but got too ambitious and dropped all of them. "I am sorry." He said, rubbing the back of his head.
"I think I got soap you can use." She said, she liked the smell of that, but they needed that more.
She took a deep breath to try and calm down. "Ok. I'll clean it up." It was a while but they got it right.
Mabel was exhausted. "Ok. Now is anything else wrong or can I start on the sweaters?
"We can manage to help." Hop Pop said, knowing how much this meant to her.
"No no, I got this." She said, holding a hand out making a thumb, and pointing it towards herself.
"Are you sure about that?" Hop Pop asked.
"Oh I'm sure," She couldn't fix any more accidents
"Okay, Mabel." Hop Pop said he and the rest of the frogs couldn't help but worry for her.
Mabel let out a heavy sigh as she kept going.
Mabel went as fast as she could with the wool. Her knitting needles snapped! Mabel looks at the needles with a mixture of fear and anger.
Sprig approached. "They look like I'm a bug!" He used the broken needle to make himself look like he had antennae to try and make Mabel laugh.
Mabel looked and smiled but went back to the ten sweaters of the afternoon.
Sprig went over to Ivy. "Is she ok?"
"I think she's just a little stressed, I think she is having a hard time living up to the rep of Frog of the Year," Ivy said.
"I guess. But how can we help?" Polly asked.
"Maybe we should just ask her, it be the best idea," Ivy said.
"On it!" Sprig ran over to Mabel. "Hey. Can I help at all?"
"Probably not Sprig," Mabel said, working on a new one.
"Oh come on. There has to be something. I promise to be more careful."
"Do you know anything about cloth dye?" Mabel asked the frog, wanting to get the rest of the wool colored.
"That will do, quick take off your hat." She said not explaining herself.
Sprig shrugged and took off his hat.
"Good, careful it stains clothes." She warns.
"My hat does?" Sprig didn't know much about the dyestuff.
"Yes, why did you think I wanted you to take it off?"
"Thanks, Marbles." using a nickname for her.
She waves her hand wanting to focus on the sweater for Miss Croaker.
Sprig did his best to help. Trying to focus which is hard for him.
"Don't be wasteful, that is all of my good dye." She said she was willing to make sacrifices for this party.
"I promise I'll be careful."
"Thanks." She said finishing her sweater, "That's what I want to hear."
As Sprig left, Polly appeared, "Now what I do Mabel doll?"
Mabel thought about it. "Could you make sure the food is being made right?" While she was making her sweaters, Hop Pop and Maddie got it all started.
"Okay, wait do you Mean by made right?" Polly asked.
"Just make sure my recipes are followed." Mabel made sure she had cards with the recipes, with glitter and googly eyes on the thing.
"Okay, I think Maddie accidentally made knock-out juice when she tried to help make Syrup," Polly said.
Mabel was rubbing her temples. "Oh no. Ya, you keep an eye on food prep."
"I'll keep the knock-out juice, we might find it useful."
"Do I look like I am interested?" She was getting a bit stressed out.
"Okay, then Mabel girl," Polly said. Mabel waved her off and resumed the knitting.
She was knitting faster than she had ever done before.
"You go, girl!" Sprig cheered.
"Thank you Sprig." She said, glad to get some praise, soaking it up like a sponge.
Sprig smiled at his friend. Glad she's calming down.
"I just need to finish, this just has to be perfect."
"Isn't perfect like an impossible goal?" Hop Pop asked.
"Anything is possible if you try hard enough!" She said, raising her hand high up.
Sprig laughs, "Ha. I guess so."
"I will make sure no one regrets voting for me." She said, working on a sweater for Polly.
"Hey. You don't need to hurt yourself over this. People voted for you because everyone knows how much you care."
"I just want to make them proud." She said.
"I know. But don't hurt yourself in the process." Hop Pop said.
Mabel accidentally cut me, "Okay, someone gets me a bandage, so I can get back to work."
Maddie came up. "Here. Drink this it will help."
She drank it but felt dizzy from the smell alone.
Maddie sighed in relief when Mabel fell asleep. "Finally. Now let's get this all ready before she wakes up everyone!"
"Maybe Sprig and I should get her a new outfit for the party," Ivy said, worried for her.
"I think she's like that," Polly said.
"Helping her look presentable is the least we can do, quick Sprig grabbed an arm." Ivy gave instructions.
Sprig grabbed her arm and helped Ivy.
Sprig had Mabel in a wheelbarrow. "Why do humans have to be so heavy when they are sleeping." He said, trying to keep her from falling out.
Ivy snorted. "Come on. We're almost there."
"Thanks for changing for me." He said, "For obvious reasons." She said gesturing towards herself.
"Ya. She'd have killed you. She might still." Ivy joked.
"I am happy to have help, I do hope the others will able to finish Mabel's party, she deserves the respect."
"I'm sure they have!" She assured. And just as she said they they turned the corner and saw the party set up.
It was great, with plenty of sweaters, and pancakes taller than Mabel was.
Mabel made a sleepy sound as she started to wake up.
"She getting up," Ivy said, poking her gently.
Mabel shot up. "Oh no, I fell asleep!"
"Don't worry, I got you dressed." She said, helping pick her up. Conveniently not mentioning they knock her out. "And the rest of them finish off the rest of the preparation."
Mabel looked around and started to cry.
"What happened, whatever went wrong we have time to make right." Sprig said worried.
Mabel hugged them tightly. "Thank you. It's perfect!"
He hugged back, "Thanks, we have a feeling of what you wanted."
"Don't worry Mabel girl, we got your back," Polly said.
"I made some chocolate pancakes." Hop Pop said.
"My favorite!" She smiles at her little-found family in a froggy world. "I… I'm really lucky I met you all." They smile at this, "Come on. Let's get this party started!"
They smiled as they started to get everyone ready, Polly liked to mess with people but didn't break any bones.
Mabel was finally relaxed as she saw everyone seemed to be having a good time. Even the former mayor.
Maddie somehow made a life-size ice sculpture of Mabel.
Mabel whistled. "Impressive, but it's a little taller and lankier."
"You sure about that Mabel?" She asked.
"Duh. I know how tall I am." Mabel said.
"Yeah, you would." She said, wanting to placate her.
Mabel grinned. "I'm gonna go see how many pancakes I can shove in my face."
Polly heard this, "Do it, it is your destiny."
Mabel started the insane challenge.
"Go go girl," Ivy said, raising her fist up and down.
Mabel started to choke a little.
"Is something wrong Mabel?" Sprig said, "Do you have to go to the bathroom?"
Mabel ran to cough up some pancakes.
"Don't tell me, wait do humans normally turn blue like that?"
"Ahhhahana," she made a gargling sound.
"Is this charades?" He asked.
"Sprig knock it off." Hop Pop said, helping Mabel out.
"Oof. Thanks hop pop," she said once she could.
"Anytime." He said, "Watch how much you eat at one time."
"Ya. I probably should," she was still smiling despite this.
"Look what me and Maddie made while you were napping," Polly said, pointing at something out of Mabel's view.
"What is it?"
"A banner for you." She said. "Maddie help made it. It has a copy of all the symbols of your sweaters on it."
"Ah huh," Maddie said.
"Okay, Maddie did all the work, while I told her what to do. They're happy."
"No." She said.
Mabel laughed at their back and forth. "Thanks. Both of you. I appreciate it so much."
"Thanks, since I have superior penmanship that makes sense I would do more of the work."
"Can Polly even spell? Or use a pen?"
"It is hard work," Polly whined. She was still very young after all.
Mabel patted her head. Causing Polly to bounce like a ball. "You're so cute."
"Ahh crazy lady!" She said, something never changes.
Mabel grinned. She was so happy.
"Did you remember to get a dance floor?" She asked.
"Yup, Right over there!"
"I got an idea." She said grabbing Sprig and Ivy by the back of the collar. "To the dance floor with you."
The two gulped as they were tossed into the mist of the dance floor.
"Come on show us your moves," Mabel said.
Sprig looked awkwardly at Ivy. "You umm wanna dance?"
She thought about it for a second or two but figured she might as well. "Only if you can keep up slowpoke." She taunts, challenging him.
"Oh, it is so on now!" Sprig said, ready to rise to the situation.
"Show me your moves." She said grabbing him by the hand.
Sprig started doing silly dances that he hoped looked cool.
Ivy was using all her power to not laugh at him. She tries to keep up with him.
Hop Pop says this and is awed.
"You people and your legs." She said, using a flipper to hand wave them.
"You'll get them one day. I think." Mabel said.
"I hope so." She said, looking at her lower part.
"When do tadpoles get their legs normally?"
"Around a few years old."
"And how old are you?" Mabel asked.
"Four," Polly answered.
"They should come anyway now."
"Great! Come on Polly let's tear up the dance floor." Mabel said.
"Anytime." She said, leaping into the human arms. "Lead the way."
Mabel happily rushed to the dance floor. Mabel smiled, laughing like a maniac. "Ya! This rocks!"
"Everyone enjoying it, Mrs. Croaker happily watching," Polly said.
"This party I say is a huge success. Nothing could ruin this night!"
"Mabel, Mabel, Mabel stop what you're doing?" He asked, running directly towards her, clearly out of breath, he must have run fast to get this result.
"Oh boy," she groaned then smiled at him. "Is something wrong?"
He was out of breath, "There is...there is...there is...another human at the entrance to...town." he fell back, "I think I'm gonna die."
"Polly take care of hop pop. I'll go investigate," Mabel frowned. Wondering what was going on.
She started to rush to the town entrance.
She saw a strange figure, and as she walked it was revealed it was a blonde in red armor, it was...Sasha.
Mabel's eyes widened. "Sasha!" She ran over and hugged her.
"Mabel you are here, I heard you were here and *we* can come over as soon as we can."
"We? Is Marcy and Anne with you?"
"No, I made some new friends. Come say hello Grimesy."
A figure appears a large toad with two damaged eyes, "Hello." He said with him what looked like the entire toad army.
Sprig spoke, "Dun dun dun."

My response:
Agree, I don't like mushrooms or cultist on my pizza. I don't think we did scarier than this episode.
