Rin had no idea what had possessed her to agree to this. Sitting there in the passenger seat of Katalina Edelfelt's car as they drove off towards who knows where. The older woman had told her she needed to see something, it was said with such an urgency that it had piqued Rin's curiosity. She looked over at the woman who was focused on driving and realized something.

She couldn't get a read on Katalina Edelfelt or the kind of person she was. The fact she was Luvia's aunt should have been reason enough for Rin to be wary of her as she didn't trust Luvia for a mile on account of…many reasons mostly relating to her shameless flirting with Shirou. Even with that in mind, Rin's impression of the older Edelfelt was also rather bleak as she was either completely oblivious to Gil and his actions or she knew very much about them and didn't care whatsoever.

In her head Rin knew it wasn't fair to compare Luvia to her aunt, the two looked like two very different kind of people. Where as Luvia wore her aristocracy on her sleeve so to say, Katalina seemed way more reserved about it, she even dressed rather modestly in formal yet simple clothes. Rin also recalled Shirou mentioning how Luvia and Katalina weren't even related by blood despite how they looked sort of similar.

The ride was uncomfortably silent, but Rin preferred that. She wanted to keep her mind sharp just in case.

Eventually the car came to a stop in front of a seemingly ordinary building that didn't stand out too much in the normally busy London streets.

"Where are we?" Rin asked curiously.

Katalina undid her seatbelt "it is a special facility of the Clock Tower where we keep poor unfortunate…well you will see. Please just follow me."

Rin, against her own better judgment, did follow Katalina's lead. Stepping out of the car and following her into the building. Once inside Katalina immediately walked over to the reception counter and spoke to the woman manning the desk.

Rin didn't pay attention to the conversation instead looking around the place. It seemed almost a bit like the reception at a doctor's office.

"Miss Tohsaka please follow me…" she heard Katalina say, beckoning her to follow her. Rin did so and both women stepped into the nearby elevator, pressing the buttons to go downstairs.

With her arms crossed Rin asked "are you going to tell me why you brought me here and what this has to do with Lawrence."

In response Katalina sighed, affixing her glasses back properly on her nose.

"You must know Miss Tohsaka that Nathaniel's story is quite tragic. You see about thirteen years ago his family were found brutally assaulted in the middle of the night. His parents, cousins, all of them violently slaughtered. His family was a well known and respected Magus family and their deaths shocked the entire magical community. And as the only survivor you can imagine the intense survivors guilt that plagues young Nathaniel."

Rin listened attentively to the story she was telling. Yet in spite of that she didn't believe a single word of it.

"And nobody considered that perhaps maybe it was him who was responsible. He admitted it to me himself that he killed his own mother."

Katalina smiled almost mischievously in response "well I find that rather hard to believe Miss Tohsaka. I understand your personal history with him is far from the best. But when he came to me two years ago, missing one hand and feeling utterly regretful of falling in with that maniac Manadek's schemes, I just find it hard to believe he is the monster you think he is. Plus the thing about his mother…"

The elevator pinged as they reached the destined floor. Both stepped out and Katalina inquired for Rin to follow her. The place they were in felt almost like a large underground bunker.

"This place is where we keep sick or hurting mages and keep them from being a threat to themselves and the magical community. And in here there is someone I want you to meet…"

They stopped at a door at the far left end of the many hallways. Snatching a key card from her suit pocket, Katalina unlocked the door and opened it.

When Rin looked inside she saw an almost saddening sight. The room was pristine and clean, very simple with a dresser, a door that led to a bathroom, a bed and cabinet for storing clothes. But the most heartbreaking sight was a single solitary woman sitting in a wheelchair facing away from them, her hair long and grey and disheveled and blankly staring out at the wall in front of her.

"What…who is this?" Rin whispered quietly.

Katalina's expression turned somber "Miss Tohsaka. That is Maureen Lawrence….Nathaniel's mother…"

Rin couldn't believe her ears. Was this true? It had to be or why else would she be brought here. She just stared at the back of the woman's head in disbelief.

"She's…she's alive…" she mumbled.

"Well as good as. Sadly the attack left her with a severe head trauma. She remembers next to nothing about that night and her motor functions have been all but broken, she can barely move without help."

Without saying another word Katalina beckoned Rin to follow her as they both stepped inside the room. Slowly they turned around to come face to face with the frail woman that was Maureen Lawrence. As soon as Rin laid eyes on her face all she could feel was a profound sadness. The woman had a vacant stare as she looked at the mirror, like no thought was happening in her head.

"Hello Maureen it's been a while" Katalina said softly.

The woman looked at them, not having much of a physical reaction. That was until her eyes glided over and looked at Rin, they seemed to widen and she slowly raised her hand and pointed at Rin.

"Tokiomi….you look…..look like dear Tokiomi…"

Rin felt her jaw metaphorically hit the floor. Never did she expect to hear her fathers mouth coming from what she knew to be a complete stranger.

Katalina placed her hands on Rin's shoulders "this is Tokiomi's daughter Rin Tohsaka."

Rin looked at Maureen, she seemed a bit slow to grasp what she was being told. But her eyes widened once more as it seemed to set in.

"Oh Tokiomi…such a handsome….such handsome young…."

Maureen seemed to stumble over her words and Rin was at a loss of what to say until she mumbled "you…you knew my father?"

"Yes, yes….knew well…handsome and talented Tokiomi…so sweet…" Maureen said in a broken sentence, her mind seeming to drift off.

Katalina took over for Rin "I'm very sorry to disturb you Maureen but this is sort of important. We are here regarding your son."

The mention of her son seemed to make Maureen smile brightly "ah Nathaniel….sweet boy such a sweet boy….always with the stray cats…."

Katalina turned back to Rin and leaned over to whisper in her ear "forgive her please miss Tohsaka. She isn't all there since that night."

Rin's curiosity had hit its peak by now. She was completely baffled by this entire situation. She recalled pretty vividly how Gil had spoken about taking a hammer to his mother's head and ending her life. And yet here she was still alive, though it seemed he hadn't been lying about the hammer part. The woman looked in a constant daze and seemed to take a long time recalling significant details. Did he even know she was still alive?

"Why…why you ask….why you ask about Nathaniel…"

Katalina turned and was about to say something but instead Rin interjected and stepped forward, her eyes brimming with a curious fire.

"Miss Lawrence I want to know. Why did you send your son to study under my father?"

It was a question she had wanted answered from the moment she learned of Gil's existence. Because although she had a lot of answers, this one still alluded her as the man himself had never given her a clear answer. And frankly she didn't think he knew the answer either. But from the small interaction here Rin could gather that Maureen seemed to have known her father at least. Maybe he had studied at the Clock Tower, it was not unreasonable.

Maureen began to bite her nails, as if she was desperately trying to focus on anything but recalling that memory.

"Please Miss Lawrence I need to know. My father already had a student so why would he take another?"

"Because….because he had too…"

"What do you mean he had too? My father had no obligation to your son!" Rin said, her voice trembling with a slight hint of anger.

"He had…he had too…." Maureen said with uncertainty and fear in her voice, continuing to bite her nails.

"Answer me damnit!" Rin said leaning forward, her face inches removed from the clearly frightened and mentally clouded woman.

"Miss Tohsaka please calm down" Katalina tried to interject by reaching out her hand. But Rin immediately swatted it away and placed her hands on the handrails of Maureen's wheelchair and looking straight at her.

"Tell me now! I've met your son and he's a psychopath. Under what obligation would my father ever be to take in someone as deranged as him as a student…"

At this point Maureen's wide eyes began to tear up and she bowed her head in shame as she wept.

"Because…because Tokiomi is his father…."

In that very moment, Rin felt the ground almost fadeout from under her, her legs gave in and she sank onto the floor with a thousand yard stare as she knelt in front of Maureen Lawrence's wheelchair. The woman bowing her head in shame and despair.

Rin felt herself getting sick, as if she was about to throw up. A sinking feeling in her stomach that seemed to bang against itself.

"No….it can't be…" Rin thought in her head.

"Miss Tohsaka…" she heard Katalina say. But instead of responding Rin mustered as much strength as she could and ran out of the room. Her thoughts in disbelief, and her whole body tensing up as she felt herself getting sicker then before.
