Chapter 19: Shadows Fall, Heroes Rise

Wave Country, Forest Clearing

The mist lingered like a mourner's veil, curling around the trees where Zabuza slumped, Kubikiribōchō stabbed into the earth. V stood over him, cane aglow, white hair fading back to black as Devil Trigger receded. Haku hovered nearby, senbon poised, her masked gaze a storm of loyalty and doubt.

V twirled his cane, voice a velvet blade: "Rest easy, Demon, our dance concludes here. But know this: I'll soon face Yagura. Your village's chains may yet shatter."

Zabuza's head snapped up, eyes widening beneath bandages, shock, then a flicker of something raw. Yagura… the tyrant, bleeding Kirigakure dry. His breath hitched, a ragged laugh escaping. "You? Against that monster? If you pull it off, V…" His voice softened, a rare crack in his armor. "Kiri might breathe free again. Don't die before I see it." A dream I buried, could this devil resurrect it? He smirked, masking the hope stirring in his gut.

V's smirk mirrored his. "A poet's promise, I'll pen that tyrant's end." With a final nod, he turned, vanishing into the mist, Griffon's cackle echoing: "Big talk, boss, don't trip over your own quill!"

Tazuna's House, Mid-Morning

The forest rustled with Naruto's grunts, his clones weaving through trees, wind chakra slicing bark, training till exhaustion claimed him. Back at Tazuna's home, the door splintered inward, two of Gato's thugs swaggering inside, blades glinting like vipers' fangs.

"So, you're Tazuna's daughter, huh?" the taller one sneered, looming over Tsunami. "Too bad, you're coming with us."

A scream tore from her throat as Inari, hidden in the bathroom, froze, heart pounding. He bolted to the kitchen, eyes wide. "Mom!"

"No, Inari, run! Now!" Tsunami's voice cracked, desperation sharp.

"Don't move, brat," the second thug barked, hand on his hilt. He glanced at his partner. "Grab him too?"

"Nah," the taller one said, leering. "Gato only needs one hostage."

Hostage? Inari's mind reeled, legs trembling.

"Let's waste him then," the thug grinned, drawing his blade with a slow, cruel rasp.

"Wait!" Tsunami lunged, voice breaking. "Please, don't hurt my son! He's just a boy, I'll do anything, anything! Just spare him!"

The thug paused, blade hovering, then smirked. "Fine, tie her up." They bound her wrists with coarse rope, dragging her toward the door. Inari sank to the floor, tears streaming. I'm weak… I can't save her. I'm scared, I don't wanna die! His sobs echoed, a child's despair.

Memories surged, Naruto's brash shout: "An idiot like you can cry forever! You're just a coward!" Kakashi's calm wisdom: "He got tired of crying and decided to act. He knows strength, like your father did." Kaiza's voice, steady and warm: "If you care about something, protect it, even if it costs your life. Hold it with both arms."

Inari's tears slowed, faces flashing, his gentle mother, brave grandfather, fierce Team 7, his lost father. Can I be strong like them, Dad? His small fists clenched, resolve igniting.

"Hey, walk faster!" a thug snapped, shoving Tsunami.

"Wait!" Inari's yell pierced the air. He charged, voice trembling but firm. "Get… get away from my mom!"

The thugs turned, blades gleaming. "Kid's got guts, cut him down," the taller one sneered.

"If you hurt him, I swear I'll," Tsunami's plea cut off as a thug's hilt cracked against her neck, knocking her out cold.

"Shut up, nap time," he grunted.

A blade slashed, Inari vanished, a log tumbling in three sliced chunks. "Substitution jutsu?!" the thug barked.

"Woman's gone too!" his buddy shouted, spinning.

"Sorry I'm a little late!" Naruto's voice rang out, cocky and bright. He stood atop a crate, Inari slung over his shoulder, grinning wide. "Heroes always show up at the last second, ya know!"

"Naruto!" Inari gasped, relief flooding him.

"Who else, twerp?" Naruto laughed, setting him down. "You did awesome, Inari, distracting 'em let me grab your mom."

"How'd you know they were here?" Inari asked, wiping his face.

Naruto scratched his head. "Was training in the forest, saw a dead boar, chopped trees, cuts leading here. Followed 'em and bam, trouble!" He winked. "Ninja instincts, believe it!"

"Blah blah, get him!" a thug roared, charging with his partner, swords raised.

Naruto tossed shuriken, they deflected them with clangs, closing in. "Idiots," Naruto muttered. Clones puffed into existence, swarming, fists flew, feet slammed, a whirlwind of orange pummeling the thugs senseless. They crumpled, out cold.

"You did it!" Inari cheered, eyes shining.

"Believe it!" Naruto crowed, striking a pose. Inari burst into laughter. "That was so cool, like a real ninja!"

"Oi, I am a ninja, ya little punk!" Naruto grinned, joining the cackle, a symphony of triumph.

He softened, rubbing his neck. "Hey, uh, sorry for callin' ya a coward. Forget it, okay? You were brave out there."

Inari's lip quivered, tears welling. "Darn it, I swore I'd stop crying! You'll call me a baby again!"

Naruto's smile was warm. "It's okay to cry when you're happy, ya know."

"Naruto…" Inari sniffled, beaming.

"Right, I'm leavin' ya in charge here," Naruto said, clapping his shoulder. "Gotta hit the bridge. Bein' a hero's tough, believe it!"

"Believe it!" Inari echoed, grinning as Naruto dashed off.

Moments later, Inari froze, Vergil knelt beside Tsunami's unconscious form, tenderly brushing her hair, a lover's caress in a devil's hands. He smirked at Inari. "So, Naruto changed you. That boy has a knack for it." His voice dipped, introspective. "If all were like him, perhaps true peace could bloom, a fool's dream, yet…" Power rules, not hope, yet that boy stirs both.

Inari's grin widened. "Naruto's amazing!"

Vergil rose, gaze sharp. "Go rally the villagers, brat, Gato's reign ends today. Your mother's safe with me."

Inari nodded, bolting off with newfound fire.

Alone, Vergil's eyes hardened as he neared the bound thugs. He kicked one awake, no familiars, just cold intent. They gaped, recalling him from Gato's den, blue coat, white hair, a specter of betrayal.

"You're free," Vergil said, voice dead.

"Without her, Gato'll," the thug stammered.

"Ten seconds," Vergil cut in, hand on Yamato's hilt. "Flee."

They stumbled into the woods, panic driving them. At a distance, Vergil vanished, reappearing in a blur. "You shall die," he intoned, Yamato flashing, slashes carved the air, blood spraying as they fell, lifeless. He sheathed the blade, expression unmoved.

--

Tsunami stirred, cradled in his arms, bolting upright. "Inari, where's my son?!"

"Relax," Vergil murmured, steadying her. "He's safe, rallying the villagers as we speak."

She exhaled, gratitude softening her panic. "Thank you… for saving us."

Vergil smirk flickered. "Naruto's the savior here, I merely lingered."

Mental note, thank that loudmouth later, Tsunami thought, steadying herself. Vergil released her, stepping back. "Join Inari. I'll head to the bridge."

"Wait!" She called, rushing forward as he turned. Rising on tiptoes, she pressed a kiss to his forehead, soft, impulsive. Vergil's eyes widened, then, boldness seized him. He tilted her chin, stealing a deeper kiss, his first, lips firm yet fleeting.

Tsunami's Thoughts: His touch, cold yet warm, like a storm breaking. My heart races, fear? Gratitude? He's a devil, yet… so human here. Kaiza's gone, but this… guilt stings, yet I don't pull away. After, she flushed, stepping back, breathless.

Vergil's smirk returned, voice a velvet tease: "A muse's gift, sweeter than any verse. Keep that fire, Tsunami, it suits you." He turned, leaving her stunned yet smiling faintly.

Tazuna's Bridge, Midday

Naruto sprinted onto the bridge, finding the workers roused, aiding Tazuna with weary determination. "Yo, old man!" he shouted. "Gato sent goons to nab Tsunami, I smashed 'em good!"

Tazuna cursed, hammer pausing. "That bastard, still scheming?"

As if summoned, Gato strutted in, a squat tyrant flanked by a ragged posse, clubs, blades, and sneers aplWenty. "Well, well," he spat, eyeing the scene. "That white-haired punk botched it, Tazuna lives, his guards strut, and Zabuza's probably laughing somewhere."

Kakashi's brow furrowed. "White-haired boy? You mean Vergil?"

"Didn't catch a name," Gato sneered. "Blue coat, blue eyes, pretty boy with a sword. Swore he'd gut you all."

So Vergil played him, Kakashi mused, Sharingan glinting.

On cue, Vergil appeared, white hair stark, Yamato sheathed, coat swaying. Gato grinned. "Ready to earn your pay"

Vergil's eyes narrowed, a spectral blade flickering into existence, Mirage Blade, pointed at Gato. "Scum like you deserves only death "

Gato's face purpled. "Massacre 'em all, him, the brats, the old man!"

Before his men could charge, a clamor rose, villagers streamed in behind, Inari and Tsunami among them, wielding shovels, rakes, and fury. Inari stepped forward, voice steady. "We've had enough, Gato, you're finished!"

Tazuna's chest swelled, a proud grin breaking. "That's my grandson."

Vergil's smirk widened, stepping aside. "Naruto, Sasuke, this stage is yours." He vanished in a blue flash, leaving the spotlight.

Sasuke's lips curled. "Finally." Naruto grinned, clones puffing into a legion, orange tidal wave surging. Sasuke darted after, kunai flashing, fire chakra igniting his blade. The thugs faltered, then met their doom, clones pummeled, Sasuke's slashes danced, a symphony of chaos. Gato shrieked as Naruto's fist met his jaw, toppling him into the dirt.

Aftermath, Bridge's Edge

Gato and his men lay bound, groaning amid the villagers' cheers, shouts of "freedom!" and "down with Gato!" ringing out. Kakashi sighed, tension easing. "The biggest thorn's gone, smooth sailing from here."

The sun climbed higher, casting light on a bridge reborn, and a people unshackled.
