Q Raises Harry Potter
Chapter 1:
[Earth year 2371]
Vash was waiting in a holding cell on Epsilon Hydra 7. Q popped in.
Vash said, "You're here to gloat?"
Q answered, "Quite the opposite. You'll escape during your trial, but it will be a boring three months until then. I'm here to make an offer."
Vash asked, "What now Q?"
Q said, "I'd like for you to help me with something for maybe 10 years, maybe 17 years. You won't age during that time and you'll be back here just before your trial and rather exciting escape. No-one will notice that you were gone."
Vash said, "Really Q. Can't you see that our time together ran it its course?"
Q answered, "I want you and me to raise Harry Potter as a stepson. You will have magic during that time, but not when you return here. Read these books and I'll return in 7 days for your answer."
[7 days later]
Q returned to the jail cell that Vash was in. She had been able to read the books with no-one noticing.
Vash exclaimed, "What are you really after Q?"
Q answered, "Always assuming I have an agenda. Well I do actually. This will be my third attempt to find new members of the Q continuum with the Harry Potter universe as a start. Each has been using one of the Hogwarts houses as an ideal. The Ravenclaw was very successful. The Slytherin got sidetracked, but is still underway from a certain perspective of linear time. This will be a Gryffindor attempt."
Vash thought for a moment and said, "With a different upbringing Harry Potter would be an obvious Gryffindor, not an actual Slytherin that would need to ask the hat to put him in Gryffindor. Wouldn't I be a Slytherin though?"
Q answered, "Hardly. While you are devious and admittedly a thief, you are in it for the thrill not the gain. You are a Gryffindor through and through."
Vash asked, "How would the arrangements work?"
Q answered, "Just as to all outside appearances you'll be in your jail, so will Harry Potter be in his, at least until his Hogwarts letter arrives in 1991. Actually we will traipse through the galaxy from 1981 to 1991 raising him to reach his potential."
Vash asked, "I see some inconsistencies with what is in those books with the history I am aware of."
Q answered, "Actually this timeline itself is fictional from a different perspective. I combined this timeline, called the Star Trek timeline with the Harry Potter timeline. Each has its own internal inconsistencies that I have ironed out, but differently in the two previous attempts and in this one. This one will make more use of fan fiction ideas. I'll show you all of the fictional Star Trek videos from yet a different universe and you can read any of the more than one million Harry Potter fan fictions."
Vash asked, "So I am from a fictional universe? Nice! I should thank the writer and director for the way I was portrayed."
Q said, "If you'll be openly in the Harry Potter world, you'll get the last name Evans. You'll be a distant relative of Harry Potter's mother. You actually have a slight resemblance to her. Of course you'll pass the blood test that Dumbledore would perform, if we were to allow that. In Star Trek Canon you never had a last name."
Vash said, "With that type of proof we can openly adopt him and keep our location secret. We can still travel around the galaxy, or stay on Earth. You'll need a last name that we can share."
Q answered, "Quarton. In the universe that Star Trek was fictional, I has named after a real person with that last name. Janet Quarton, who organized a Star Trek fan club. In 1981 she lives in Scotland. There is no Star Trek to be a fan of in this universe, but she will be from a squib line that I am related to. Your actress, Jennifer Hetrick, in that same universe was briefly engaged to the actor who played Jean-Luc Picard. She later married someone else and had a daughter named Lilly, another connection to Harry Potter's mother."
Vash said, "Q and Vash Quarton at Harry Potter's service!"
[1981, 4 Privet Drive, Little Whinging]
On the second of November, 1981, in front of an ordinary house at 4 Privet Drive, in the ordinary neighborhood of Little Whinging in England, with ordinary people, thank you very much, a baby was left in a basket.
As soon as Dumbledore left, Harry Potter and his basket disappeared. The gadgets in Albus Dumbledore's office that kept track of Harry Potter showed the expected readings of him living at Privet Drive. Arabella Figg provided the same reports on Harry Potter as she did in Canon.
[1981, Potter Manor]
Q was telling Vash, "In Harry Potter Canon there is no mention of a manor. However, it is an old family. Fleamont and Euphemia must have had an ancestral home, other than the small house in Godric's Hollow that James and Lily lived in. While fan theories say they were killed in the war, Canon says it was dragon pox, which therefore indicates an intact habitation. Then there is Charlus and Dorea Potter. Who else would have inherited their home?
So here it is, Potter Manor. Harry can enter the door, allow visitors, meaning us, but not annoying headmasters, and reconnect to surviving house elves."
Vash asked, "Why do you seem to justify yourself?"
Q answered, "I create a universe that makes sense. Then I don't intervene much. I influence, I teach lessons even, but I don't just make things happen much."
Vash said, "Not what I would do."
Q answered, "Which is why you are not a Q."
Vash said, "As ordinary people in a logical timeline, I don't want to deal with the ministry at least until 1991. They are dreadfully corrupt and annoying. Gringotts might be a problem, but we should make sure that no-one is withdrawing money from Potter accounts.
And what about Sirius? Harry will be upset with us eventually if he learns that we could have done something to help but didn't."
Q answered, "I can do something there." Q snapped his finger and Sirius appeared.
Sirius looked confused and asked, "What am I doing at Potter Manor? Who are you?"
Vash answered, "Good questions. Vash Evans, now Vash Quenton and my partner Q Quenton."
Q added, "At least what we are going by in this timeline. You are still appearing to be in Azkaban and will be there many years without a trial. My interventions cannot include that yet. But, you can stay here and join us on some of our trips around the galaxy. Harry is in the crib in that room. To Dumbledore's knowledge he is in the prison of the Dursley home that Albus Dumbledore put him in and expects him to stay until Hogwarts and then at least part of each summer afterwards until age 17. He also is never going to get you a trial."
Sirius ran over to Harry and made sure he is ok, "What is that scar?"
Vash answered, "The boy who lived. The only person known to survive the killing curse. He is famous for that, despite being the only person to survive that night, and not exactly articulate at his age. Dumbledore is telling everyone what he thinks happened."
Sirius said, "Getting back to who you are, Lily mentioned Petunia Dursley, but no other living relatives with the birth name of Evans."
Vash answered, "Don't look a gift keazle in the claws. We have intervened here to raise Harry. You're along for the ride, not the driver."
Sirius asked, "Can I at least get a magical oath?"
Q answered, "Wouldn't work on me. I suppose Vash can do it."
Vash said, "blah blah, oath, etc., Q sort of created this timeline, but has ethics in how much he bends it for his goals. OK, here is my oath. We are raising Harry Potter to be a true Gryffindor with the skills and knowledge to win his battles and eventually lead the Earth to set the stage for some humans eventually becoming qualified to also have the powers of Q. Lumos."
Sirius said, "I'm more confused than before you made the oath. Will you let me be his godfather?"
Q said, "Yes, but we have goals for him. You can try to persuade when we might disagree, but don't go making demands. You can go back to Azkaban if you become troublesome. Oh, don't look so down, or like you are going to try a futile attack on us. We mostly want the same things for Harry."
Vash said, "Mipsy, get Sirius a calming drought."
[1983, Gringotts]
Vash and Q brought Harry to Gringotts. They went up to a teller, Q said, "Potter family business. We'd like to be discreet."
They were led to a room in the back. "3 drops of blood Mr. Potter." When his identity was verified, the Goblin asked, "And who are you?"
Vash said, "I'll verify my relation to Harry Potter, through his mother."
After verifying, the Goblin asked, "The custody arrangement was not legal, but that does not get you legal custody either."
Q said, "Understood. On his behalf we are making sure that his interests are taken care of. Since no-one had proper custody, there should be no withdrawals from his accounts. At age 11 he'll be back to withdraw money from his trust vault and then assume full control when possible using end of line clauses."
The Goblin said, "We accept to block all access. In the summer before starting Hogwarts, he can have a key issued for a fee and have access to his trust vault. Note that in his case it happens to be around the day he turns 11, but is more generally the fifteenth of July before the first of September when one's age would be 11.
We will fulfill our fiduciary duties in the handling of Potter assets until he is legally capable of doing so.
Since you have not asked for any withdrawals yourself we are giving you some leeway in not objecting to his informal custody."
[1987, Orion trading post]
Sirius asked, "He going to fight that tough looking kid, what do they call themselves, Talarians?"
Vash said, "Harry has been intensively learning martial arts. He has the strengthening ritual, the ones that Khan Singh discovered on Earth."
Q added, "All are available methods, nothing I bestowed."
Sirius asked, "Isn't Singh from that Star Trek world? You showed me that moving picture show."
Q answered, "Yes, but he is in this combined timeline also. He's eager to take over 40 countries on Earth in a few years, but it doesn't work out well for him, or anyone else for that matter. Maybe someone other than me will help things along."
Sirius said, "I don't get what you refrain from doing. Even these years later, I am still trying to figure out your rules that you follow.
You make a point of saying that you don't just give Harry extra powers, but use techniques available on Earth in our year. You've said before that you don't just make things appear in the timeline for convenience. You'd probably go on about how Singh being here just makes sense, and that his extra fighting ability was seen in Star Trek, and Harry just happens to benefit from it."
Q answered, "Precisely."
In a dueling room there was a ready chime. Harry Potter entered the ring. When the signal to start the fight was heard, he dived under the Talarian youth's stike, and hit him in a place painful to Talarians. Three hits later had the Talarian on the ground and conceding the fight. Harry eagerly collected his winnings of 12 strips of latinum.
[Training room Potter Manor, 1989]
Q said, "You have seen many wizarding duels now. What do you conclude?"
Harry said, "Mostly line of sight attacks. A few small area effect spells. Much transformation. Occasional stealth or surprise apparition or its equivalent."
Q asked, "Why do they not use large explosions?"
Harry answered, "They cannot?"
Vash said, "Observe this Bombarda Maxima." An entire wall was destroyed. Vash continued, "It has often been taught at Hogwarts in the seventh year. Most wizards only use it to remove a wall or obstacle, or as a direct fire attack. Now watch this.
Vash first sent a small transfigured bottle to the target area, then the bottle exploded with vapor, then a modified Bombarda that had more fire was sent, then a large secondary explosion covered a large target area.
Q asked, "Why do you think that this type of attack is not often used?"
Harry answered, "Lack of imagination?"
Q said, "Very good. Being cut off from non-magicals for 300 years has left them a little behind the times. I'm not saying use modern artillery, but you can do the same even better with available magic."
Vash said, "You would still not win against the truly greats like Voldemort, Dumbledore, Flitwick, Snape, Bellatrix with these tactics.
You can however, go back to Godric Gryffindor to see using non-magical weapons as part of magical dueling. A sword can be very useful. Transfigured daggers are also a useful technique."
The next lesson had Vash saying, "Most wizards have limited to no magical combat ability without their wand. Most do not even have wand holsters. You will of course have that. You've seen the video of yourself after finishing third year having your wand pick-pocketed.
Now try to deal with these three wizards who are maybe going to start fighting you in a minute. Until they can draw their wand, they cannot use much magic, and most of them are fairly untrained in non-magical fighting."
[Training room Potter Manor, 1989]
Vash told Harry, "We made sure that when your scar was removed you retained your parseltongue ability. Some on the so-called light side consider that ability a dark trait. Let's review the Canon duel you would have had with Draco Malfoy in your second year and see how you can avoid revealing your ability."
A similar sequence appeared, with a large snake menacing a civilian.
One time Harry tried the Depulsio spell to send the snake towards the original caster. Another he used a bombarda.
Vash said, "Any of those are fine. Most snakes are not magically resistant. Just don't have that moment where you seem sympathetic towards the snake."
Harry said, "I don't like that. What if I talked to the snake and told people that is one my languages, accept it or not,"
Q said, "You can decide that. You might even have more success with recruiting Slytherins to your side."
{Owl post, July 1991]
The owl redirection was briefly lowered for the Hogwarts post and Harry got his letter, which he immediately responded to including that he won't need any help buying his supplies.
[Diagon Alley, August 1991]
They appeared in disguise and did Harry's shopping. They noticed some Order members in the alley, but weren't detected by them.
Harry got a new Gringotts key for his trust vault, which had about 50 thousand galleons. Harry also got his heir rings for both Potter and Black. The Black ring was magically hidden, except when he wanted to show it.
His gear for being at Hogwarts were detections and to some extent protections against potions and mind control and port-keys. A wand holster that made it difficult for anyone to take his wand. A link to his Gringotts trust vault. A protected expanded, shrinkable and featherweight trunk. Advanced sets of books. Dragon-hide armor.
[September 1, 1991]
Vash and Q accompanied Harry to the train. They arrived soon after the train started boarding and Harry picked an empty compartment.
He was thinking back to what his step-parents told him about the Weasley family. Vash said, "If you analyze Canon it is clear that Molly potioned you to want to be with Ginny and Hermione to be with Ron. Q agreed with that analysis and that is what is in our timeline. At this age Ron has been told to be friends with you. For that matter, so has Draco Malfoy."
Harry responded, "You make it sound like the Weasleys are my enemy. What if I want to eventually marry Ginny? What if I want to be friends with Ron?"
Vash said, "Exactly, you'll decide what you want to do with a clear mind. Even your house choice has not been made for you. We raised you as a Gryffindor. Your birth parents were Gryffindors, Q and I act rashly like Gryffindors, but that is the limit of our influence."
While he was contemplating his recent conversation, a boy he recognized as Neville Longbottom knocked on the door. Harry said, "Please come in and sit here if you'd like, I am Harry Potter."
Neville nervously answered, "I am Neville Longbottom. This is my toad Trevor." Trevor started escaping. Harry had his wand out and said, "Accio Trevor" and then transformed a cage for him."
Neville looked wide-eyed and said, "Isn't that fourth year spell work?"
Harry said, "I was trained."
Neville said, "Well you did defeat a dark lord as a toddler.'
Before Harry could reply, a girl with bushy hair arrived and said, "Hello. Could I sit here? The people in the previous compartment were unpleasant and called me a mudblood, which I assume is some sort of insult."
Neville looked downcast and said, "I am Neville Longbottom. That word is an insult against those whose parents were not a witch and a wizard."
Harry greeted her with, "Harry Potter at your service. There is prejudice against non-magical ancestry in this world. I myself am what is called a halfblood, since my mother was born to non-magicals. Neville is what is called a pureblood. A more polite term for your status would be muggleborn. I would someday make our society say new magical or some other term that is not negative."
Hermione said, "I'm Hermione Granger. I read all about you."
Harry answered, "And little of it true. Remember the events in question only had one survivor, me, who was 15 months old. You will learn in time that authors often have an agenda, or non-supported opinion, and just because it is published does not mean it is true."
The three talked for a while, and as the train was almost ready to leave Harry saw the Weasleys outside the window. He wasn't sure what to think about Ginny.
Soon Ron appeared at the door, "Everywhere else is full", and struggled to put his trunk on the shelf. Harry did a simple Wingardium Leviosa to help him."
Hermione said, "I've been trying to learn that spell myself. I read that the precise pronunciation is important. I can't wait for classes to begin."
Ron asked, "Are you all going to be Ravenclaws? I think I'll be a Gryffindor, my whole family is."
Harry said, "I am Harry Potter, and descended from Gryffindors."
Ron looked for his scar. "I'm Ron Weasley. Where is your scar?"
Harry said, "My step parents got that taken care of. Why does everyone think I have a scar?"
Hermione said, "The books about you say that."
Ron said, "I heard you went to live with Muggles, what are they like?"
Harry said, "Again the books are wrong. While I was left with my non-magical aunt, before they could take me in a more distant cousin who is a witch rescued me. The one that Dumbledore tried to leave me with hated magic."
Hermione reacted, "But he is the best wizard ever!"
Harry said, "Please think skeptically and not believe everything you read or anything people tell you, even from me."
Three people opened the door to the compartment. "I am Malfoy, Draco Malfoy, this is Crabbe and Goyle. Is Harry Potter here?"
Harry answered, "Pleased to make your acquaintances, Mr. Malfoy, Crabbe, and Goyle. And shook each of their hands."
Draco said, "I can help you. You'll learn that some are better than others to know in our world."
In response to Ron's non-verbal hostile reaction, Draco said, "A Weasley, wearing hand me down robes." Looking at Neville he said, "A squib. I guess they'll send you home soon." Looking at Hermione said, "And a mudblood."
Harry stood upright and said, "Apologize to Miss Granger."
Draco said, "No. There is a ranking among us. Betters do not apologize to lessors. I can teach you these things. For instance, Mr. Longbottom would be my peer, if he weren't a squib. You despite being a half-blood have rank by being heir Potter. You and I will probably end up in court over the Black estate, but I'll win."
Harry said, "Insult is resolved with apology or with violence, despite rank. Apologize!"
When Draco didn't respond, Harry instantly had Crabbe and Goyle on the ground with strikes behind their knees and then took Draco's wand and had him in an arm lock."
Harry said calmly, "Apologize."
Draco said, "Very well. I apologize for causing anger when explaining the facts of our society. My father will hear about this. Reckless and hangs around with riffraff. That didn't work out well for your parents." Then the three left the compartment.
Ron said, "You better watch out with that one. His father worked for you-know-who then claimed to have been bewitched."
The rest of the trip was uneventful and they arrived for the sorting, similar to in Canon.
Hermione was under the hat for a long time but it eventually said, "GRYFFINDOR!"
Neville also took a long time, but also was in Gryffindor.
While waiting, unlike in Canon he felt no pain from being near Quirrel, since his scar with its Horcrux was removed with some esoteric South American magic. Sirius was saying "You can't just snap your finger?" Q replied, "I physically could but I won't."
Snape tried to read his mind when they made eye contact, but Harry blocked him. Earlier Vash and Q told him that it was unusual, but not unheard of for 11 year olds to have effective occlumency shields. In your class year, Daphne Greengrass has perfect shields. Next year, Luna Lovegood will be unreadable, not due to shields, but due to the strange way her mind is organized. There are three others in your year who will likely by in Slytherin, and one in Ravenclaw with mostly effective occlumency. Draco isn't one of them.
"Potter, Harry!"
The hat said, "Traits of all four houses. You were raised to be a Gryffindor. What do you want?"
Harry said, "Just look at the train ride. I don't avoid fights. I don't tolerate injustice. I am not destined for a quiet life in Hufflepuff. I wouldn't fit in as a Slytherin either."
The hat said, "You could be great in Slytherin. You do have great ambitions, or should I say that others have great ambitions for you?"
Harry replied, "Precisely. I'm more of a weapon than a schemer. Maybe I'll be a leader, but with stalwart Gryffindors behind me, not ambitious Slytherins trying to find an advantage."
The hat said, "You've convinced me. You'll find a courageous way for greatness in GRYFFINDOR!"
During Headmaster Dumbledore's announcements he warned against going to the third floor corridor. Harry Potter was prepared for this possibility and would notify his step-parents by mirror that night.
After everyone was in bed, Harry set wards for silence and other protections around his bed and called home with their communications mirror. "Same as Canon." Vash replied, "Speed-run time! I'll bet you 1000 quatloos that you can't resolve Canon years 1, 2, and 3 by the end of December."
Harry said, "If I win I want to fight on Triskelion and bet my quatloos."
Q answered, "Very well. I can threaten them to allow a simple fair fight and I'll make sure everyone survives the fight."
In the background Sirius yelled, "How can you do that and not all of the other things you say you cannot do?"
Harry said before ending the call, "Can't really deal with Buckbeak since those events won't happen yet."
Vash said back, "Ok, but you still have to get Hagrid's right to carry a wand restored."
Harry replied, "Also we invite Ron and Neville for an outing this Yule break and buy them wands. That is a parent thing, so you'll need to convince Mr. and Mrs. Weasley and Mrs Longbottom to accept that Yule gift."
