-Chapter 6-
The Nutty Professor (and Plum)
Dark Lands
At Bowser's Castle, Peach was pacing around her room nervously, trying to come up with an idea.
"I have to get out of here," she thought out loud, "There's no telling what Bowser will do if I don't. But how will I–?"
"What!?"
"Ahh!" She nearly leaped out of her skin at that but was able to get her wits about her when she heard voices from outside. Curious, she decided to investigate more closely, placing her ear to the door.
"And you're positive?" came Kamek's voice.
"Yesss…" hissed a snakelike voice. "Thossse plumbers from Toad Town are on their way to the castle to recover the princesss."
"The Mario Brothers? But Mouser assured Lord Bowser that…" Kamek was silent for a moment. "That miserable, mangy, lying rat!"
"Indeed…" the snake continued.
"Never mind that!" Kammy's voice cut in. "How in the name of Skolar were they able to defeat you, Tryclyde?! They're plumbers! They clean toilets and fix sinks for a living!"
"These are no ordinary plumbers, Lady Kammy. Both of them are capable of incredible featsss of athleticism, even without the ussse of power-upsss. One ssssuper mushroom was all the red one needed to bessst me."
That caught them by surprise.
"Just one?" Kamek repeated.
"How is that possible?" Kammy demanded.
"Sssearch me," the serpent hissed, "All I know is that they're heading south to Plack Beach for sssome reason."
"Damn it to the Underwhere…" Kamek swore.
"Thank you for telling us, Tryclyde," Kammy said. "You're dismissed."
"Wait! Could you send one of your Whitecloaks to heal my-!?" They hung up on him.
"There's no doubt about it, brother," Kammy realized. "What we foresaw twenty-six years ago... The bane of the Koopa Troop's existence has come."
"Blast it all!" Kamek cursed. "We should have drowned those little brats and stuffed that stork when we had the chance! Lousy Yoshisaurs…"
"We can't change the past, Kamek. What we can do is focus on the present. One way or another, Mario and that green 'stache must be stopped."
"Agreed. For now, we must inform Lord Bowser of this development."
Kammy grinned evilly. "And decide how we divide Mouser's stuff."
"Dibs on the Bombinomicon!" Kamek took off.
"Hey!" Kammy cried.
Peach pulled away from the door, processing what she just heard.
"What they said... is that why Mario and Luigi disappeared from this world when we were kids?" She shook her head. "Oh, never mind that! If Bowser finds out about this, who knows what will happen to them! I need to get out of here and warn them! But how?"
She looked over the lock, thinking it over before nodding and pulling a small Bobby pin from her hair.
"Here we go…" She began picking the lock. "Never thought Daisy's wild side would ever come in handy." She fiddled with the lock. "C'mon… Just a little more…"
Eventually, the lock clicked.
"Perfect!" Peach slapped a hand over her mouth before slowly opening the door. Much to her surprise, there were no guards.
"What the…" she whispered. "Is he that confident I can't escape?" She thought for a minute. "Of course he is. This is Bowser we're talking about. Oh well." She smiled, about to leave, before stopping.
"Oh right!" She headed back to her bed, adjusting some pillows to make it look like she was sleeping. "There."
With that taken care of, Peach exited the room and closed and locked the door. She slipped off her heels, holding them in one hand before sneaking away.
"Alright, now to find a way to get ahold of Mario and Luigi!"
Plack Beach
"Toad?" came Mario's voice. "Toad, can you hear me?"
Toad groaned, slowly opening his eyes before he was splashed with water. He snapped awake, sputtering, to find Mario standing before him with a bucket.
"Mario? What the-?" he perked. "That's right! Tryclyde ate me, and-!"
Suddenly, Luigi came in, throwing another bucket of water on him. Toad sputtered, scowling at the green plumber. "Luigi, will you knock it off?! I'm awake, okay?!"
"That was to make sure you're not covered in any more snake slobber," Luigi clarified.
Toad got up, wiping his face before perking. "Wait… Tryclyde ate me. Then that means…"
"You're not dead," Mario cut in. "Luigi and I fought him and made him spit you out."
Toad gasped. "You... you beat Tryclyde!? For real!?"
"You're still alive, aren't you?" Luigi deadpanned.
"No, no, no," Toad shook his head. "You guys beat Tryclyde?! He's one of the biggest, baddest mooks in Bowser's army, and you beat him?!"
Mario nodded. "Wasn't easy, but yeah."
Toad gaped for a moment. "Stars above… It's just like old man Merlon's stories…"
Mario raised an eyebrow. "Merlon? Stories?"
"Not important!" Toad got up. "We need to get to Plack Beach so we can save the princess!"
"We're already there," Luigi informed him. "And... yeah, we can see where it got its name."
Toad looked around finding they were on a sunny beach, dotted with various rock formations that looked like rotten or otherwise cavity-infested teeth.
"Oh. Well, that makes it easier. C'mon!" Toad walked on ahead.
"Luigi," Mario began, "if I didn't know better, I'd say Toad is keeping something from us."
"That's a story for another day," Luigi decided. "Let's focus on the now."
They hurried after Toad.
"So…" Luigi began, "how exactly are we gonna get to the castle? Swim?"
"Well, back in high school, the coach always said I could swim better than most fish," Mario quipped.
"Yeah, no," Toad replied. "The castle's all the way on the other side of this section of land. You'd be swimming for hours. We're gonna need to find a boat."
"Yeah, that makes much better sense," Mario agreed. "Here's hoping someone's willing to spare a ride."
The trio eventually made their way to a pier where several market stalls had been set up. Toad led them to the edge of a pier, where a blue-capped Toad wearing a sailor uniform with a turquoise scarf and white admiral hat atop his cap was polishing a boat.
"Maybe he can help us?" Luigi offered.
"Huh?" Toad saw where Luigi was pointing. "Oh hey, it's Saul!"
"You know him?" Mario asked.
Toad nodded. "He works for a shipping company back in Toad Town. He supplies me with my syrups." They headed for him, Toad waving. "Hey, Saul! Saul T.! Over here!"
Saul T. turned, smiling as he saw who was calling him.
"Well, if it isn't Toad!" he greeted. "You're a long way from Toad Town, ain't ya?"
"Yeah." Toad gestured to the Mario Bros. "I'm helping these guys."
"Whoa!" Saul exclaimed. "Humans?"
"That's us," Mario confirmed. "I'm Mario. This is my brother, Luigi."
"That's a nice boat you got there," Luigi complimented.
"Thank ya!" Saul declared. "The Haddock's (1) a real beaut, ain't she?"
"Yes, she is," Toad agreed. "Look, Saul, I need a favor from you. Could you give us a ride?"
"Sure thing! Need a lift back to town? I was just about to head back there myself!"
"Well, actually…"
"We were hoping you could take us to Bowser's Castle," Mario said bluntly.
Saul went bug-eyed. "Say what?! Bowser's Castle?!"
All activity screeched to a halt at the mere mention of Bowser's name, everyone turning and looking at Mario as if he had grown three heads and a tail.
"Great, galloping Goombas, why in the world would you guys wanna go there?!" Saul demanded.
"Because he has Princess Peach," Mario replied. "She's in danger because I did something stupid, and we need to save her."
Saul went pale. "Bowser's kidnapped the princess?!"
Already, people were muttering in fear. Luigi pinched the bridge of his nose in annoyance.
"Way to go, bro," he muttered. "You just kickstarted a riot."
"Well, what was I supposed to say to convince him?" Mario shot back. "We wanna go on a pleasure cruise to Bowser's Castle, maybe get blown up for laughs?"
"This... This can't be happening…" Saul let out. "If Bowser has the Princess… then all hope is lost."
"Not if we get her back," Mario insisted.
"Not possible," Saul said sadly, "Once something goes into Bowser's Castle, it stays there."
Mario's fists clenched. "Nothing is impossible, Saul. Improbable, unlikely, but never impossible."
"C'mon Saul, you gotta help us!" Toad pleaded. "These guys might not look like much, but they managed to humiliate Mouser and take down Tryclyde!"
Saul perked. "They beat up Mouser and Tryclyde?!"
"Would you please stop screaming like that?" Luigi requested.
Saul began to panic. "Oh, Stars... Oh, Spirits... Oh, Brighton and Twila…" He began frantically putting all his things away and getting ready to cast off.
"Saul, wait!" Toad cried.
"I'm sorry, Toad! But I can't be seen talking to you! If I am, the Koopa Troop will have me bricked for sure! Just go home! Pretend this never happened and move on!"
Mario lost his patience, stomping the pier and shaking it slightly. "Now you listen to me! Your princess and kingdom need help, and you're slinking off rather than helping us?!"
"She belongs to Bowser now! We all do!"
"No!" Mario snapped. "One way or another, this is happening! I don't care if I have to rent a rowboat! I don't care if I have to jump off of this pier and swim from here to Bowser's Castle! I'm gonna save Peach, even if it kills me!"
Saul just stared at Mario in shock and awe.
"Mario…" Luigi managed.
"Heck yeah, it's about time!"
The Bros. and everyone turned to see a young woman with black hair in pigtails and brown eyes approach them. She was wearing white and red sneakers, black shorts, a white lab coat, and a dark blue T-shirt with the kanji for "Plum" on it.
"Finally, someone who's willing to crawl out from under a rock and kick that old Bowser back in his place!" she declared.
"Plum, have you lost it?!" Saul snapped. "You can't diss Bowser in the open like that! You'll get bricked, or worse!"
"So what?" Plum shot back. "Bowser just bricks people whenever he feels like it anyway! What difference does it make?"
"Um, excuse me," Mario began, getting her attention. "Who are you?"
"Oh!" Plum perked. "I'm sorry. I'm Plum. A loyal employee of Gadd Science Inc." She winked, giving a two-fingered salute.
"Gadd Science Inc.?" Mario repeated.
"Some up-and-coming tech company I saw on the news a while back," Luigi explained.
"Of course," Saul sighed. "You're here on behalf of that crazy professor, aren't you?"
"Hey! E. Gadd's a genius!" Plum defended. "And he's not crazy, just…eccentric. But yes." She turned to the trio. "You said you guys were looking for a boat to get you to Bowser's Castle, right?"
"You heard?" Luigi questioned.
"I'd be surprised if anyone didn't." Plum stole a glance at Saul, who winced. "Anyway, it just so happens you and Professor Gadd want the same thing, and that's to see Bowser finally get knocked down a peg or two. And it just so happens that he has a new, experimental seacraft that could help you."
"Well, to clarify, I just want to save the princess," Mario told her. "But if we knock Bowser down a peg in the process, fine."
Plum shrugged. "Semantics."
"Well, if this professor guy can get us a boat, then that's perfect!" Mario declared. "Lead the way!"
"Great!" Plum said. "The lab's this way."
Plum led them away, Saul watching them go.
"Crazy, stupid fools," he sighed before getting back to casting off.
"Saul T. of the Seashrooms Shipping Company?"
"Yeah, that's me," Saul looked up. "How can I be…?"
His voice trailed off as he found himself staring down a group of Koopa Troopas in silver armor covered in spikes. Their leader wore darker armor, glaring at Saul with piercing red eyes.
"We have some questions we'd like to ask you." the leader said.
Meanwhile, in a somewhat isolated part of the beach, Plum led the trio toward several rock formations, looking around.
"Alright, the coast is clear. C'mon!"
"Uh… okay?" Mario said.
Plum led the trio to a set of rocks that resembled a mouth with a single tooth hanging in the front. "Here we are. Professor Gadd's secret laboratory."
They looked around, Luigi giving Plum a confused look.
"Uh, Plum?" he began. "It's a bunch of rocks."
"Well yeah, that's the point," Plum said matter-of-factly before sticking her hand into the "cavity" of the tooth rock above her.
"Now where is that… there we go!" A soft click resounded. Plum walked over to the trio. "Alright, here we go!"
Nothing happened.
"Give it a sec," she told them. "Sometimes, it takes a bit to open up."
"What opens-?" was all Toad managed to say before they were dropped down a trapdoor with a scream.

Down in the lab, a small, old man was making himself a coffee, humming a theme to himself (2). He perked, hearing screaming.
"Oh, goody! Plum managed to find our plucky, young heroes! I'd better get them some refreshments."
He walked over to a coffee pot he had set up to the side, grabbed four mugs from a nearby drawer, set them on the counter, and filled them up. "Alright, that looks good." Suddenly, he grimaced. "Although, I feel as if I'm forgetting something important…"
A loud thud and several grunts of pain reached his ears. The man ran out to find the Bros., Toad, and Plum laying on the floor in a heap, the crash pad that should have cushioned their fall tossed to the side haphazardly.
"Of course, the Professor didn't put the pad back after he vacuumed…" Plum sighed. "Mario, can you please get your foot out of my back?"
"I'd love to, Plum, but someone's gonna have to move their knee first."
"Owie…" Luigi wheezed.
"Greetings and salutations, noble heroes!" They looked up to see E. Gadd clapping. "I'm so glad you could make it. My name is Professor Elvin Gadd, and this is my secret workshop."
They managed to get themselves loose, standing up carefully.
"I'm gonna feel that tomorrow…" Toad let out.
"Sorry about that," Gadd rubbed the back of his head. "I forgot to put the crash pad back after I swept the floor. Now, who might you be?"
"I'm Mario," Mario replied. "This is my brother Luigi and our friend Toad."
"Mario and Luigi?" E. Gadd looked deep in thought. "Those names sound oddly familiar. Where have I heard them before…?"
"Ummm… Professor?" Plum asked.
"Oh yes!" E. Gadd snapped his fingers. "That's the name of a pizza parlor I went to in the Seaside Kingdom not too long ago! Ooh, that pepperoni and salmon nigiri pie was positively scrumptious! Even if it did leave me bedridden for weeks."
Mario and Luigi exchanged looks before turning to Plum.
"Like I said, he's… eccentric."
"But enough about that!" E. Gadd snapped to attention. "Now, I understand that you boys require assistance getting into Bowser's castle up on Dimble Mountain, correct?"
"That's about the size and shape," Toad confirmed.
"Can you help us?" Luigi asked.
"Of course not!" E. Gadd snapped before suddenly calming down, "But I know an invention that can."
He motioned for the group to follow him. The three looked at each other in confusion but shrugged and did so. Gadd led them to a sizable yellow watercraft with red headlights, an orange interior, and a glass dome on top.
"I give you the Marine Pop!" the professor declared, "A combination hovercraft and submarine, equally at home above and below water. It has a torpedo launcher, cameras, a loading crane, a pressure shield that can endure even the deepest depths, and chairs with built-in cupholders and seat warmers for when your butt gets cold." He chuckled as he wiggled his fingers at the last one.
"Wow…" Mario said. "It's…"
"Yellow," Luigi finished.
"Oh thank you," E. Gadd beamed. "I picked out the color myself." At that, he turned to his assistant. "Plum, be a dear and go fetch the equipment from the lab, would you?"
"Right away, Professor!" Plum ran off at that.
"Well, don't be shy!" E. Gadd declared. "Have a look around! Witness the scientific marvels we've created."
Mario, Luigi, and Toad looked around the lab. Mario found his attention drawn to a workbench covered with blueprints and unfinished inventions. The two that stuck out the most seemed to be back-mounted devices, consisting of a water pump and vacuum cleaner.
"Hmmm…" Mario examined the unfinished pump and tapped it. It promptly spasmed before shooting a jet of water into his face. He sputtered before his soaked hat fell over his eyes. He lifted it up, glaring at the pump.

Meanwhile, Luigi was looking at another part of the workshop and found a door. He opened it, finding himself in an art gallery, decorated with two angel statues and several paintings. Curiosity piqued, he looked left and right, seeing all of them had one thing in common: they all appeared to be paintings of ghosts. Getting nervous, he noticed one painting in particular, one of a ghost dressed like a stereotypical French artist.
"Vincent Van Gore…" he read the plaque beneath. "Yeesh, pretty creepy name."
"As if yours is any better, you repulsive Philistine!" came a French-accented voice.
Luigi's eyes widened, then he looked up at the painting of Van Gore...who was painting another painting…inside the painting.
"What?" Vincent asked.
Luigi screamed in horror before fleeing from the gallery as if the hounds of Hell were after him, slamming the door behind him.
"Hmph!" Van Gore scoffed. "What is wrong with him?"
He was suddenly hit by a ball of yarn, one that came from a painting of a stereotypical grandmother knitting a scarf.
"Hey! Shut yer baguette hole, Vinny! I'm trying to knit here!" the granny snapped.
Van Gore growled, waving his paintbrush at the granny, who simply cackled at him with glee.

Back in another part of the lab, Toad was looking over some other inventions.
"Wow, E. Gadd sure has a lot of unfinished junk lying around," he remarked before noticing a fairly large device in the back. "Wait, is that a cappuccino machine?"
He walked over to the machine, looking it up and down. "Huh...this one actually looks finished. Wonder if it works."
Toad looked at the different settings. The options included: Woohoo, Hoohoo, Teehee, Chuckle, Hoolumbian, Chuckoccino, Teeheespresso, and Lunoman Greenie.
"Hmmm… I could go for a cup right about now." He grabbed a cup from the dispenser, set it underneath, and pressed the button under Lunoman Greenie. The machine hummed to life, a hot liquid pouring from the tap. After a few seconds, the pouring stopped.
"Okay!" Toad took the cup before looking at the drink. To his surprise, it was an odd green color. "Huh, it really is green." He sniffed it. "Smells good, though. And hey! It even has one of those froth art faces!"
True enough, the coffee's froth had been arranged into a happy smile.
"Now, moment of truth…" He blew on the drink before taking a sip, hearing a creepy laugh. He perked, blinking.
"Hello?" He heard a burbling noise that vaguely sounded like "hello." He perked, realizing it was coming from his cup. "Huh?!" He watched as the froth face blinked, spinning around on its own and laughing. He immediately set the drink down before running off, screaming. Once Toad left, a green ghost emerged from the cup, laughing as he fled.
Around the same time, Luigi was running back into the main workshop, screaming his head off. Mario spun around as he heard the screaming, just in time to see Luigi and Toad run full-tilt into each other.
"What the heck's got into you two?!" Mario demanded.
"Mario!" Luigi and Toad began shouting over each other. "Paintings! Ghosts! Haunted! Van Gore! Green! Coffee!"
Mario covered his ears after a minute before going over, covering their mouths with a hand each.
"Now I'm going to let go of your lips," he began, "and when I do, you're going to calmly tell me what's going on. Understand?"
The two nodded, letting out an "Mm-hmm." With that, Mario took his hands away slowly.
"He has a haunted art gallery!" Luigi babbled. "One of the paintings spoke to me, Bro!"
"Forget the art gallery!" Toad insisted. "His whole lab is haunted! I got a drink from his cappuccino machine, and the coffee laughed at me!"
Mario gave them blank looks. "Ghosts? Really?"
"It SPOKE to me! Why would I make that up?!"
They heard a chuckle. Luigi and Toad jumped but relaxed when it turned out to be just E. Gadd.
"It seems your pals have stumbled onto my life's work."
"Say what?" Mario asked.
"Oh yes. In addition to my regular scientific research, I'm also an avid scholar in the study of paranormal and paraphysical phenomena," he said as he wiggled his fingers dramatically, "In layman's terms, I study ghosts. I'm kind of an expert in the field."
The trio looked at E. Gadd.
"You what?" Luigi asked.
"Okaaaaay…" Mario began. "Professor, how old are you?"
"Let's see…" E. Gadd began calculations. "I made my debut to the world in 2001, but what does that have to do with anything?"
"Right~," Mario said skeptically.
"Everything okay out here?" Plum asked, reentering.
"No!" Luigi exclaimed. "Everything isn't okay! You didn't tell us this place was haunted!"
"Luigi!" Mario admonished. "I'm sorry, Plum, Luigi and Toad saw something that got them freaked out and-"
"Oh, you mean the ghosts," Plum remarked, much to Mario's shock. "Yeah, they like to crawl out of wherever it is they like to crawl into and scare the bejeebus out of people. The best thing to do is just ignore them."
"Say what?" Mario deadpanned.
"I know what I saw, Mario," Luigi insisted. "I mean, c'mon, after everything we've seen since we fell into that Warp Pipe, you really gonna dismiss ghosts existing?"
"Well…" Mario removed his hat to scratch his head. "I mean, when you put it like that…"
At that moment, they heard garbled barking. Mario perked, the group turning to see a white, dog-like ghost phase through the wall. Mario's jaw practically hit the floor, while Luigi yelped, breathing heavily.
"Relax, guys," Plum soothed. "Polterpups are totally harmless. Not any different from regular dogs."
"Yep," E. Gadd agreed. "In fact, Duppy (3) here is our unofficial mascot here. Aren't you, boy?"
Duppy woofed, acting as if he was trying to say something.
"It looks like he's trying to tell you something," Toad said.
"What's the matter, boy?" Plum questioned.
"Little Timmy's stuck in a well?" Duppy gave E. Gadd a flat look at that. "You're right, I don't know why I thought it was that."
He kept woofing, and E. Gadd kept guessing.
"The Toad Scouts are outside selling cookies?"
The pooch shook his head.
"The faucet is leaking?"
The pooch barked negatively.
"Someone forgot to flush?"
The pooch growled at E. Gadd, starting to get annoyed.
"The Koopa Troop is trying to break into the lab? Well, why didn't you just say so?" Gadd laughed before perking with a gasp. "Wait, that's not good! Code red, people! CODE RED!"
-X-
Meanwhile, the Koopatrols were tearing the beach apart to try and find the entrance to E. Gadd's lab.
"Move faster, shell brains!" the captain ordered. "I want the old man, his brat, and those rabble-rousers out here and at my feet by sundown!"
"We're going as fast as we can, Captain! But the lab could be anywhere!"
The captain ignored his subordinate, walking toward the rock formation. He saw the tooth hanging from it, eyes narrowing before he smashed it open, revealing a switch.
"Perfect," he hissed. "E. Gadd, you senile, old fool..."
-X-
Below, a klaxon blared, red lights flashing as the group realized what was going on.
"How'd they find us?!" Plum demanded.
"I'm not sure!" E. Gadd exclaimed. "The only people who know about this place are you, me, and…!" His eyes widened in realization. "Oh, dear…"
"Saul T.!" Plum scowled. "He sold us out! That backstabbing sea dog!"
"What?!" Toad shrieked. "Saul would never...!"
"Toad, you saw how he freaked out when he met us!" Luigi pointed out. "There's nobody else it could've been!"
"There's no time to think about it now!" Mario snatched up a black-headed hammer from E. Gadd's workbench. "I'm not going down without a fight!"
"No!" E. Gadd cried. "You mustn't!"
"What, should we just sit back and let them kill us, then?!" Mario snapped.
"Have you forgotten why you're here in the first place!?" E. Gadd demanded. "We have to get to the castle and save the Princess!"
"Right…" As they heard the trapdoor opening, Mario grabbed another hammer, handing it to Luigi. "Professor, you and Plum get that ship ready! We'll hold them off!"
"What?!" Plum screamed.
"I was able to take down Tryclyde. I think I can handle a few grunts."
"But-!"
"We don't have time! They're coming! Do you trust me?"
"I-I…" Plum stared in awe at the determination in Mario's eyes. "Alright, but get ready to go as soon as we get ready to sail."
Mario gave her a thumbs up and a nod before hurrying off. At that moment, several Koopatrols dropped down. Luigi, legs trembling, steeled himself, standing by Mario's side as they parted, allowing the captain to step forward.
"Well, well, well. If it isn't the pesky red and green New Donkers that have been causing so much trouble to Lord Bowser," he noted. "Allow me to introduce myself. I am Basilisx. Captain of Koopatrol Division-Z. Head of King Bowser's Elite Enemy Execution Squad. And today… I am the last living thing you will see."
Author's Note:

(2): The Luigi's Mansion theme, natch.
(3): A mix of "dog" and "puppy", as well as a word in the Caribbean for "ghost."
Things are heating up, aren't they? And yes, that's Basilisx from Super Mario Bros. Z. As for Saul T., he's basically Sea Captain Toad from Paper Mario: The Origami King, wearing the sailor suit from Super Mario Odyssey.
