Worlds Apart, But Still Fighting
[Collection Room - Shadow Generations stops playing]
The group had successfully made it through the Mirror Hallway, emerging into the Safe Zone of White Space—though Shadow and Aqua Prime, having fallen slightly behind, had promised to catch up soon.
Warm light gently spilled across the spacious chamber, its golden hue a stark contrast to the featureless void they'd just departed. High ceilings stretched upward into shadowy archways, adorned by ornate bronze sconces emitting soft, welcoming glows. Plush carpets unfurled along smooth tiled floors, their intricate patterns whispering stories from countless worlds long past.
"Well, I'll be…" Terra murmured, her green eyes widening in quiet awe. She took a hesitant step forward, her boots gently pressing against the soft rug.
The room stretched far wider and deeper than they'd initially expected. Cozy chairs and sofas, far more than the few scattered near the entrance, sat invitingly throughout the expansive space, clustered around ornate coffee tables carved with exquisite, alien designs. Further in, on raised platforms and ornate shelves carved into the walls, treasures and artifacts gleamed quietly in displays of golden candlelight.
It wasn't just a Safe Zone, it was a refuge.
Orbot hovered slowly forward, his optics sweeping across the carefully stacked books, assorted devices, and strangely designed artifacts that populated shelves set high into the walls. His mechanical head tilted inquisitively.
"Fascinating… so many items," Orbot mused, floating upwards slightly for a closer look. "It's almost as if White Space has been collecting these things from across different timeless. It's an archive of worlds."
Maria gently moved towards a large, polished wooden bookcase filled with weathered books. Her fingertips brushed gently over the spines, each bearing titles in languages she'd never seen before.
"All these stories…" she said softly, a mixture of awe and sadness playing in her blue eyes. "I wonder if anyone even remembers they're here."
Gerald stood beside her, examining a strange, shimmering orb sitting on a nearby pedestal. His reflection distorted oddly within its smooth surface, and for a brief moment, the elderly scientist appeared troubled.
"Hmm… dimensional drift," he murmured softly, his voice edged with quiet apprehension. "This place feels unsettlingly stable, considering our surroundings."
Silver, meanwhile, moved cautiously towards the central area, his golden gaze shifting uneasily between curiosity and wary suspicion. The very warmth of the room seemed to make him more cautious rather than relaxed.
"Isn't this place a bit… too nice?" he muttered aloud, gesturing his arms uncertainly.
"What do you mean?" Terra asked, looking over to the hedgehog.
"I mean, it's weird enough that it exists at all, but why does it feel like it's trying so hard to be cozy?"
"PARADOXICAL, ISN'T IT?" Omega remarked, his hulking frame looming near the entryway. His glowing red optics swept the room calmly. "THIS AREA IS MARKEDLY DIFFERENT FROM ALL KNOWN STRUCTURES WITHIN WHITE SPACE. POSSIBLY CONSTRUCTED FOR PURPOSES OF TEMPORARY REFUGE."
"Maybe someone wanted this to feel like home," Elise said softly, stepping quietly beside Silver. Her gaze moved gently across the comfortable arrangement of armchairs surrounding a roaring, crackling fireplace in one corner. "Somewhere safe."
"Or maybe it's a trap," Silver suggested dryly.
Cubot was far less apprehensive. He zipped towards the corner near a small alcove, letting out a delighted gasp of robotic wonder. He dramatically threw his metallic arms up in sheer joy.
"THE COFFEE MACHINE!" he cried, nearly vibrating with excitement as he floated around the sleek contraption. "Omega! Buddy, pal, friend, does this thing make cappuccinos?!"
"AFFIRMATIVE," Omega responded flatly, his voice echoing faintly through the Safe Zone. "THIS DEVICE IS CAPABLE OF PRODUCING 147 DIFFERENT BEVERAGE VARIATIONS."
"That's it, I'm staying forever!" Cubot chirped happily. "Coffee, chairs, cool treasure shelves, this place has it all!"
Orbot sighed gently, floating over to join his excitable companion.
"Please don't get over caffeinated again," he pleaded wearily. "We don't want a repeat of the Mystic Ruins incident..."
Cubot dismissed the worry with an enthusiastic wave of his hands.
"Don't ruin my dreams, Orbot!" he exclaimed dramatically. "Let me have my coffee fueled moment!"
Meanwhile, The two Aquas stood side by side near an elegantly decorated wall. Their blue eyes drifted across a collection of strange items laid carefully on narrow shelves, things that didn't quite belong to any one world. Pieces of lost realities and forgotten echoes of other realms.
Collision Aqua reached out, her fingers brushing against what looked like a small, cylindrical tool with a glowing blue tip. She lifted it carefully, holding it in the light.
Her eyes widened in recognition.
"Wait," she muttered. "This looks awfully familiar..."
Casual Aqua glanced over her shoulder, setting down a strange orange-coloured helmet that looked suspiciously like it belonged to a legendary bounty hunter from the depths of the universe.
"What is it?" she asked, turning back towards her counterpart. "What have you found?"
Aqua from the Collision Universe turned the object in her hand with a nostalgic smile.
"This looks like the Doctor's Sonic Screwdriver."
Casual Aqua blinked in confusion.
"The doctor? Doctor… Who?"
Collision Aqua let out a short laugh.
"It's just 'The Doctor.' You never really get a straight answer on the rest."
Casual Aqua raised a brow, arms loosely crossing.
"I feel like there's a lot I still need to know about you," she said lightly. "If you know someone named 'The Doctor.'"
Collision Aqua's smile faded slightly, but not completely. Her gaze lifted, meeting the other Aqua's.
"And I think we need to talk too," she said softly. "I can sense it in you. Your light… it's dimmer than it should be."
Casual Aqua's eyes lowered, her shoulders tensing just a little.
"You've been through a lot, haven't you?"
"You could say that," she replied, voice quiet but honest.
Collision Aqua nodded gently showing empathy.
"Well, I'm ready to listen, when you're ready to talk."
For a moment, the air between them was still. Not heavy, not uncomfortable… just quietly real.
Casual Aqua gave the faintest smile back to her variant.
"Thanks."
Collision Aqua returned it, the sonic screwdriver still resting loosely in her hand.
"Anytime."
Close by, Terra stood slightly apart from the two Aqua variants, her fingers drifting across a wide shelf filled with curious relics. Her gaze landed on a cluster of small, glowing crystals, faintly pulsing with energy. Something about them reminded her of home.
"These almost look like Magicite," she murmured to herself, brushing her fingertips along their smooth surfaces. "But… they're different. The energy feels strange."
She was about to move on, until something caught her eye.
Wedged between a set of old tomes and a tarnished helmet was a peculiar object leaning against the shelf. It wasn't quite like the others. It stood out, not just visually, but in how it felt.
Terra reached for it, fingers brushing against the shaft. It was cold to the touch, heavier than expected.
The object had a pale bluish shaft, smooth and crystal-like, but almost translucent in places. Four grotesque, claw-like appendages curled upward from its ornate headpiece, bone-like in texture, somewhere between fossil and dragon talon. At the top sat a round, red core, encased in a metal frame like a crown. It wasn't glowing. In fact, it looked dormant and hollow. But still, it felt alive in her hands—just barely.
"That's… different," Maria said, appearing beside her with quiet curiosity. Her gaze fixed on the scepter. "Where did you find that?"
"It was just here," Terra replied, her voice low. She turned it slightly in her hands, watching how the light caught its curves and sharp edges. "It feels… wrong. Not evil exactly, just… empty. Like something used to be inside it."
Maria stepped closer, her expression thoughtful.
"It almost looks like a seal of some kind," she said. "But the shape… and that core…"
Gerald, hearing their voices, approached from a nearby shelf.
"Let me see that," he said gently.
Terra passed it to him. He held it carefully, rotating it in his hands.
"I've seen images of something similar before," he said after a pause. "Old scattered theories we never truly understood. I dismissed it at the time. Thought it was artistic myth. No records mentioned a name."
He handed it back.
Terra took it, more careful this time. The weight of it lingered in her hands.
"It feels like it's watching me," she said quietly. "Even though there's nothing inside."
"You think it's magical?" Maria asked, folding her arms.
"Maybe," Terra said. She looked down at it again. The red orb remained still, no light or pulse. Just a swirl of cloudy crimson, like an eye half-closed.
"It's not active," Gerald said. "Whatever it was meant to hold isn't here anymore. Let's hope it stays that way."
Terra nodded slowly.
She looked around the room at the treasures, the shelves, the fireplace, the chairs, scattered books, and then back to the scepter. Something about it didn't belong. Yet it had ended up here. Like everything else pulled into White Space, maybe it had a purpose too.
"I'm going to set it down," she said, carefully placing it back on the shelf, standing upright near the others. It leaned slightly, almost like it didn't want to stay put.
Maria watched her with quiet interest.
"You think it's important?"
Terra didn't answer right away.
"…I don't know," she said softly. "But I have a feeling we are not done with it yet."
She turned and walked away from the shelf, the warmth of the Safe Zone pulling her back into its strange calm.
Breaking the quiet and calm stillness of the room, Orbot floated back towards Omega, observing the large robot carefully.
"Omega, forgive me for asking, but wasn't Shadow and our Aqua supposed to be joining us by now?" he asked with a slight concerned tone.
Omega tilted his head slightly, optics flickering briefly as he turned to face the large, violet-hued portal behind him. It hummed softly, its eerie energy dancing in muted arcs.
"CORRECT," he replied bluntly. "SHADOW AND AQUA SHOULD HAVE ARRIVED 2 MINUTES AGO."
A slight tension rippled through the air. Everyone had stopped what they were doing. Silver stepped forward.
"Is something wrong?" he asked cautiously, golden eyes narrowing. "Maybe we should go back—"
"I SHALL INVESTIGATE," Omega declared firmly, already turning towards the time hole. His massive frame shifted as he stepped closer, crimson optics locked onto the swirling anomaly. "REMAIN HERE. I SHALL RETURN SHORTLY."
The towering robot vanished without hesitation, his bulky frame swiftly swallowed by the violet portal, leaving the group standing in sudden quiet.
"Is he always like that?" Maria asked gently, turning towards Orbot with concern.
"Usually," Orbot replied calmly, folding his metallic hands. "Omega takes his job very seriously."
Cubot hovered back towards them, holding a steaming cappuccino in his metal hands, contentedly sipping at the beverage he had somehow expertly prepared.
"Omega's like an overprotective big brother with fire power," Cubot chirped cheerfully. "He's great! Not much for hugs though, I tried once and nearly lost an arm..."
"Understandable," Elise said softly, though a faint smile tugged at her lips.
Silver paced uneasily near the portal, his expression hardening slightly.
"Should we be worried?" he asked, eyes fixed on the swirling light. "They're strong, but this place… this entire situation is unpredictable."
"Give Omega a moment," Gerald replied firmly, his calm voice reassuring as he approached the young hedgehog. "He seems to know what he's doing."
Silver nodded, though his tension remained visible.
"Right…" he murmured, exhaling slowly to settle himself. "I know you're right. I just can't shake the feeling something else is going to happen."
Cubot sipped his coffee with audible delight, now relaxing comfortably in a plush armchair.
"Ah, c'mon, Silver!" the robot chirped brightly. "Relax! There's coffee, warmth, and shiny things everywhere! Whatever happens next, at least we'll face it fully caffeinated!"
Elise smiled faintly, visibly charmed by the little robot's optimism.
"He's right," she said softly. "Maybe… maybe we should take a moment to breathe."
Slowly, the others nodded in reluctant agreement. Terra sighed gently, finding herself relaxing slightly despite her caution. The Aquas stood nearby, quietly taking in the chamber's quiet charm, while Gerald and Maria moved calmly toward a comfortable pair of chairs to sit down, their eyes still quietly scanning their strange refuge.
Yet, Silver still stood near the swirling violet rift, unable to fully relax. His arms remained folded, his expression thoughtful yet tense.
"Please be okay…" he whispered, his voice barely audible.
Elsewhere - Through Sonic's Boss Gate - Perfect Chaos - Station Square
[It Doesn't Matter - Sonic's Theme from Sonic Adventure Plays]
The broken skyline of Station Square stretched out in jagged silence. The storm had passed, the floodwaters were slowly receding, and all that remained was the devastation. Cracked highways, twisted metal, and buildings half swallowed by water stood as echoes of the chaos that had reigned.
Sonic stood alone on a slanted piece of the old highway, hands on his hips as he surveyed the damage. He exhaled and shook his head.
"Man… Perfect Chaos really knows how to wreck a party," he said to himself.
The hedgehog didn't turn when he felt the familiar prickle on the back of his neck.
"Took you long enough," Sonic said casually. "What are you doing here, Naminé?"
From behind him, the soft footfalls confirmed her presence.
"I didn't think you'd notice me," she said, her voice delicate.
"I always notice when someone's watching me," Sonic replied, glancing over his shoulder with a half-smirk. "It comes from dealing with Eggman most of my life."
[It Doesn't Matter stops playing. Naminé's Theme begins playing]
Naminé stepped into view. Her expression wasn't cold, but weighed down. Her shoulders were tight, eyes shadowed with guilt. Sonic immediately sensed something was off as he turned fully.
"I came to apologise," she said softly.
Apologise?" Sonic asked, raising a brow.
"For… Perfect Chaos. For what happened," she admitted. "Terios pushed me to alter his memories. He said it was the only way to stop you."
Sonic's smirk faded. His gaze hardened.
"I knew there was something different about Chaos this time. That wasn't the same creature I fought back in the old days." He crossed his arms. "You were behind that, huh?"
"I didn't want to be," Naminé replied quickly. "But Terios… he's consumed by this belief that he's doing the right thing. He thinks protecting me, our memories… is all that matters."
Sonic narrowed his eyes, looking at the girl.
"Memories?"
Naminé nodded, her fingers curling slightly at her sides.
"His memories aren't real," she confessed. "They were created. Fabricated by the Organization. I was forced to do it."
Sonic tilted his head slightly, his expression tightening.
"So… the stuff I've been seeing, those fake too?"
Naminé quickly shook her head.
"No! Not those. What you're seeing, those are real. Your memories are returning, Sonic. Just not all at once."
He relaxed, just a bit, eyeing her carefully. He uncrossed his arms, placing one hand on his hip.
"You're trying to help me," he said, more a statement than a question.
"I am," Naminé whispered. "Even if Terios doesn't understand it. I've made mistakes. Too many. But I'm trying to make up for it however I can."
Sonic stayed quiet for a beat, then sighed and looked away towards the darkened skyline of Station Square.
"You've got more answers, I can tell. But I'm guessing you don't have time to spill the whole story here and now, huh?"
"No," she replied, glancing around nervously. "If the Organization or Terios finds out I'm here…"
"Figures," Sonic muttered. He ran a gloved hand through his quills. "Well, points for trying."
"I… have something for you," she added, reaching into the folds of her dress.
Her hand emerged, palm up, holding a yellow Chaos Emerald. Its glow was soft, flickering with a familiar warmth.
Sonic's eyes widened.
"Whoa. A Chaos Emerald?"
"I… took it from the Organization," Naminé said quietly, her eyes shifting just slightly to the side, not quite meeting Sonic's. She was hiding the truth from the hedgehog. "They don't know. I thought… maybe it could help you. Against them. Against Terios."
Sonic stepped forward, gently accepting the emerald into his hand. The energy pulsed in his palm. Familiar, but it seemed off. Like a flicker instead of a flame.
"Thanks," he said, voice calm.
But as he held it, nothing happened. No headache. No vision. No memories returning.
Sonic tilted his head as he observed the emerald in his gloved hand.
"That's odd. No weird memories this time."
Naminé looked away for a moment.
"Maybe… it'll take time. A delayed reaction."
Sonic eyed her for a second, then glanced down at the emerald, and back up at her.
A knowing smirk tugged at his lips.
"Ha. Maybe you're onto something. After my day? Anything can happen."
He pocketed the emerald. He didn't press the issue further.
"You're alright, Naminé," he added, giving her a small nod. "For what it's worth."
She looked up, surprised.
"Even after everything?"
Sonic gave a shrug as he replied.
"You're not the one trying to erase me. And you're trying to do the right thing. That buys a lot of credit."
The hedgehog turned, already facing the direction of the portal that would lead back to White Space.
"Well, better get moving. Still got past adventures and friends to save."
"Sonic…" she said one last time, her voice quiet. "Thank you."
He gave a two-finger salute, then dashed down the crumbling highway, wind in his quills and speed in his soul. The sound of his shoes echoed faintly, then faded.
Naminé stood still for a moment, alone in the ruins of a city long past. The gentle wind tugged at her dress and hair, stirring the silence like a whisper from the past. All around her, broken buildings loomed like skeletons of memories, the flooded streets shimmering under the dim, fading sky.
"That was a risky move," came a voice—casual, but edged with intent.
Naminé turned sharply.
[Naminé's Theme stops playing. Organization XIII theme starts playing]
Leaning against the hood of an overturned car stood Axel. His arms were folded across his chest, and his trademark smirk played confidently on his lips.
He wore the signature black coat of the Organization. It was long and fitted, every seam sharp and precise despite the battered landscape around him. Black gloves and boots completed the look, but nothing about Axel ever felt standard.
A sharp widow's peak framed his forehead, accentuating thin, angled brows that lent his emerald eyes a constant look of keen awareness. His hair was thick, spiked, and fiery red, flared back like a living flame. It was defiant even in a city drowned by ruin.
"Axel...?" Naminé blinked, surprised.
"Who else?" he replied, pushing off the car with a lazy roll of his shoulder, his stride easy and confident as he approached. "Not exactly the kind of place you'd pick for a vacation. Unless you're really into watching blue hedgehogs fight off giant, raging water beasts."
"You're here?" Naminé asked, confusion etched on her face.
"Yep. Apparently I've been assigned to make sure you don't get into trouble," he quipped. "Not the worst gig I've had, but this one's moving up the list. Something about… protecting you while Terios goes full rage-hedgehog on Sonic."
"He's going too far. The anger… the memories—they're driving him deeper into darkness," Naminé said softly, her gaze falling to the broken road beneath her feet.
"Yeah, I've noticed," Axel muttered, rubbing the back of his neck. "Not exactly subtle, that one. Power? Sure. But restraint? Not in his vocabulary."
"I gave Sonic the emerald," Naminé admitted, her voice low.
Axel arched a brow, his expression shifting just slightly.
"I know," he said casually. Then added, almost amused, "And I know it's not the real deal."
Naminé's eyes widened. Her head snapped up to meet his gaze.
"How did you—?"
Axel gave a lazy shrug, a crooked smirk tugging at the corner of his mouth.
"Come on, Naminé. I wasn't born yesterday. You really think Shadow would just hand over an actual Chaos Emerald? Not a chance."
He waved a gloved hand at the wreckage surrounding them, as if to underline the absurdity of it all.
"Still," he added, tone shifting to something more grounded, "it was a smart move. You earned Sonic's trust. And that hedgehog? He's not dumb. I'd bet Munny he knows it's a fake too... but he took it anyway."
"I had to try," Naminé said quietly, her eyes scanning the ruined, waterlogged streets.
"I know," Axel replied, softer now. "You always do. That's what makes you different."
He paused, then cracked a dry smile.
"You've got more heart than half the Organization... and yeah, yeah—don't start with the technicalities. You know what I mean."
She didn't say anything right away, but a soft, fleeting smile tugged at the corners of her lips. A quiet moment of warmth, cutting through the weight of everything.
Axel noticed and gave her a slight, knowing smirk in return.
"Come on," Axel continued. "Let's get you outta here before I get reassigned to clean up the aftermath of this whole mess. Who even rebuilds these places anyway? I heard Sonic ran off into the sunset after the last Perfect Chaos battle like he was starring in an action movie."
He rolled his eyes and shook his head.
"Yeah, thanks for the mess, Blue Blur."
"He always runs forward," Naminé said softly.
"Well, let's follow his lead, yeah?" Axel said, flipping his gloved hand open.
A portal of swirling darkness emerged before them. He gestured towards it.
"After you, Naminé."
She hesitated for just a moment then nodded. Together, they stepped through the dark corridor, vanishing from the shattered world.
Meanwhile - The Mirror Hallway
[Mirror Room - Sonic Generations Cutscene begins playing]
The hallway stretched endlessly in both directions, a dark corridor carved from shadow and silence. Each side was lined with tall, towering mirrors. They were perfectly polished and unnervingly still. They didn't reflect much light, and yet they shimmered faintly as if alive. Omega hadn't been exaggerating when he called it the Mirror Hallway.
Shadow moved cautiously, every footstep echoing with a distant metallic clang. Aqua walked beside him cautiously. The atmosphere was eerie, dreamlike. It was like walking through memories that weren't theirs.
"These mirrors," Aqua said softly, her breath visible in the cool air. "They're not normal. I can feel something… off."
Shadow didn't answer. His eyes scanned each reflection, some held their mirrored images, others rippled faintly like disturbed water. But then, one mirror stopped him cold.
He came to a halt without a word. Aqua paused too, turning to look.
The mirror ahead of them didn't show Shadow's reflection.
Instead, it showed someone else. Another hedgehog. They were armoured, stern, but some what familiar.
"...What the hell," Shadow muttered under his breath, stepping closer.
The figure in the mirror was unmistakable. They were black-furred, had crimson eyes, with a similar build and stance. However they were dressed in dark, knightly armour. A sword at his side. He looked like Shadow, but he wasn't a reflection. He wasn't moving in sync.
Shadow reached out with one hand, slowly. The figure on the other side moved, mimicking him. Their fingertips stopped just shy of touching.
"Shadow?" Aqua's voice broke the silence, her tone careful. "Is something wrong?"
Before he could answer, the knight's expression shifted. His eyes flared. His muscles tensed. And then—
Crack.
[Through the Fire - Crush 40 begins to play]
Glass erupted like a shattered scream. The armoured figure surged forward, bursting through the mirror in a storm of shards. Time seemed to slow as he charged, their blade raised aiming for Aqua.
Aqua gasped and stepped back, her instincts kicking in. But Shadow moved faster.
In a blur of speed, he teleported between them, a surge of crimson energy bursting from his form. He caught the incoming blade with one gloved hand, the clang of impact ringing out as sparks scattered across the dark hallway.
"Don't even think about it," Shadow growled, his red eyes blazing.
The knight's glare was intense, his voice low and cold.
"Get out of my way, Shadow…"
"I'm not letting you hurt her," Shadow snapped back, shoving against the blade's weight.
Behind him, Aqua froze, her eyes locked on the armoured warrior now only feet away.
"Who is that?" she asked, stunned.
"I don't know," Shadow admitted without taking his eyes off the knight. "But he looks like trouble."
For a moment, both hedgehogs held their ground, swords crackling with energy where they clashed. Then, almost at once, they staggered.
Shadow's hand went to his temple. The knight did the same.
A sharp, splitting pain tore through their heads, like something buried deep was trying to surface. A shared memory? A tethered emotion?
"Ugh…" they both winced in unison.
Shadow shook it off quickly, refocusing. The knight recovered just as fast, his gaze locking back onto Aqua behind him. His voice dropped, full of fury and distrust.
"I know what you're up to!"
Glowing energy shimmered at his side, Chaos Spears. Without hesitation, he flung them.
Shadow reacted immediately, summoning his own crimson Doom Spears. The two attacks collided mid-air in a blinding burst of energy, shaking the hallway.
The explosion sent wind and light rushing past them. The mirrors of the realm shook violently.
"What are you talking about?!" Aqua shouted over the noise, shielding her face. Her voice was laced with confusion and frustration. "What do you mean?!"
Shadow glanced over his shoulder at her, eyes focused.
"Stay behind me, Aqua."
She nodded, stepping back, but not too far. She looked out just enough to get a clearer look at the mysterious knight. Her breath caught.
"He looks just like you," she whispered. "Could he be… another variant?"
"It doesn't matter," Shadow said, voice like steel. "He's in our way."
The knight's grip on his sword tightened. His voice lowered to a dangerous growl.
"Step aside, Shadow. If you don't, I'll slay you too."
Shadow stepped forward, red energy pulsing around him.
"I'd like to see you try."
Aqua's gaze darted urgently between the two near-identical figures.
"Wait, both of you, stop! This is clearly some kind of misunderstanding!"
But neither hedgehog listened. In a blur of crimson and dark energy, Shadow and the knight lunged towards each other again. The hallway echoed with their clashes, bright sparks and waves of power illuminating the dark corridor. Light bouncing off the mirrors of the hallway. Doom Spears met swift sword strikes in rhythmic, violent bursts.
Shadow dashed aside, firing another round of Doom Spears, but the knight vanished in a ripple of Chaos Control. He reappeared instantly behind Shadow, delivering a fierce kick to his back.
Shadow stumbled forward, quickly regaining his footing and whirling back around, eyes blazing defiantly. He charged again, unyielding.
The knight feinted a strike, pivoting gracefully past Shadow. Aqua barely had time to blink before the knight lunged directly at her, his blade poised to strike.
Her instincts screamed for action—and, for once, Master's Defender materialised without hesitation in a brilliant flash of light. She raised the keyblade just in time, The knight's blade crashing against hers with a resounding clash.
Aqua's arms trembled under the immense force behind his attacks. She gritted her teeth, desperately holding her stance.
"I don't know who you think I am," she shouted through the strain, "but I'm not your enemy!"
Yet the knight's assault continued relentlessly, ignoring her plea. Just as Aqua's strength wavered, Shadow appeared behind him in a burst of speed. He grabbed their foe by the armour, wrenching him away from Aqua. Shadow's fists flew in a rapid, punishing sequence, driving the knight back.
With precise timing, Shadow disarmed him, sending the knight's blade spinning across the shadowy floor.
"Chaos Control!" Shadow shouted, freezing time into a sluggish crawl around them. He surged forward, fist charged with energy, aiming directly for the knight.
But impossibly, the knight raised a hand at the last moment and caught Shadow's strike effortlessly. A ripple spread through the air, warping the frozen moment unnaturally.
Shadow's eyes widened in shock.
"What?! How—"
Before Shadow could finish, the knight twisted his arm viciously and slammed a powerful punch into Shadow's chest, sending him flying backward. Shadow skidded painfully across the ground, landing hard beside Aqua.
Aqua rushed to him instantly, helping him back to his feet.
"Shadow! Are you okay?"
Shadow coughed sharply, managing a defiant nod.
"I've dealt with worse."
The knight approached slowly and menacingly. His armoured fists crackled with ominous red energy.
"You won't interfere with me again," he declared coldly.
Aqua and Shadow exchanged a quick glance, silently agreeing. They stood together resolutely, ready to stop this dangerous foe.
"We'll see about that," Shadow growled.
The knight charged forward once more. Aqua stepped in front, deflecting the knight's powerful blows with Master's Defender, each strike reverberating through her limbs. Shadow warped behind the knight, firing another salvo of Doom Spears. Without hesitation, the foe spun around, countering with Chaos Spears of his own.
Yet it was clear this fight drained the knight's strength. He suddenly staggered back, clutching his head in pain.
"Not now," he muttered bitterly.
Shadow seized the opening. He dashed forward in a flash, fists glowing with crimson doom energy, landing rapid fire blows across the knight's torso.
"Take this!" Shadow shouted fiercely, delivering a powerful final kick directly into the knight's armored chest. The armoured foe crashed heavily against a nearby pillar, dropping painfully to his knees, breathing raggedly.
Shadow and Aqua cautiously approached, their eyes locked warily on their foe.
The knight grimaced deeply, gripping his chest armour.
"I was… too careless…" he muttered bitterly.
Before Shadow or Aqua could speak, Shadow's instincts screamed in alarm. He swiftly pulled Aqua aside as a volley of lasers tore through the hallway.
"Get away from Sir Lancelot!" a sharp female voice shouted.
Shadow and Aqua dodged swiftly as more blasts rained down. Three new figures emerged: a red, black and yellow robot, a stylishly dressed amber cat, and a lavender-furred cat clad in ornate armour. All of them charged forward aggressively.
The lavender cat knight's eyes locked onto Aqua immediately, they were fierce and accusing.
"Merlina!" she spat venomously, raising her sword. "You won't harm Sir Lancelot any further!"
Aqua stepped back in confusion.
"Merlina? I'm not who you think!"
But the lavender car, Percival, attacked without hesitation, blade flashing through the air. Aqua barely blocked, parrying with her keyblade. Their weapons collided, sending sparks flying through the darkness.
The robot, Gamma, aimed his arm cannon at Shadow, coldly mechanical.
"Target locked. Preparing to neutralise threat."
Shadow dodged several laser shots, narrowing his eyes thoughtfully. There was something oddly familiar about this machine.
Meanwhile, the amber cat, Honey, quickly knelt beside Lancelot, worriedly helping him up.
"Sir Lancelot, are you alright?"
The knight shook his head in frustration, struggling upright.
"I let my guard down…"
Suddenly, a booming voice thundered into the fray.
"ANOMALIES DETECTED! THREAT LEVEL: HIGH!"
The hallway shook as Omega arrived on the scene, stomping powerfully into position beside Shadow and Aqua. His arms transformed instantly, heavy miniguns whirring menacingly.
"HOSTILES STAND DOWN," Omega declared bluntly. "OBJECTIVE: PROTECT SHADOW AND AQUA."
The other robot hesitated, optics scanning Omega carefully.
"Analysis: Unknown unit designation. Another E-series robot? Impossible."
Omega fixed his optics on the machine, recognition audible in his metallic voice.
"YOU ARE E-102 GAMMA, THE PROTOTYPE WHO DEFIED EGGMAN'S PROGRAMMING."
Gamma faltered momentarily, lowering his weapon slightly.
"Impossible. I was the last unit. No records of E-123 Omega exist in my data."
Shadow exploited the hesitation, warping swiftly behind Gamma and delivering a precise kick that sent the robot stumbling. Gamma recalibrated quickly but didn't retaliate, processing Omega's impossible presence.
Close by, Percival pressed Aqua fiercely, her blade slicing through the air.
"You won't deceive us again, Merlina!" Percival growled fiercely.
Aqua blocked deftly, her voice urgent and imploring.
"Listen, I'm not your enemy, and I am not Merlina! Please!"
Omega stepped protectively between them, heavy weapons spinning.
"CEASE HOSTILITY IMMEDIATELY, KNIGHT."
But Aqua placed a calming hand on Omega's arm, gently prompting him to lower his weapons. She stepped towards Percival bravely, her weapon lowered, meeting the knight's gaze calmly.
"Please," Aqua urged earnestly. "There's no need for us to fight. I don't know this Merlina, but we're not your enemy. Let's figure this out together."
Percival hesitated, searching Aqua's sincere gaze. Slowly and reluctantly, she lowered her sword.
"If you lie, you'll regret it. But… I'll allow this truce."
Gamma's cannon powered down as well.
"Acknowledged. Standing down."
Omega nodded curtly in response.
"TRUCE ACCEPTED. YOUR INTEGRITY IS NOTED."
Shadow finally relaxed slightly, energy dissipating as he crossed his arms.
"Hmph… Finally."
Percival moved cautiously back towards Lancelot, still wary. She looked closely at Shadow.
"Who are you all exactly, and why do you look like Lancelot?"
[Through the Fire stops playing. Aqua's theme starts playing]
Aqua spoke clearly, gently stepping forward to introduce her group.
"I'm Aqua. This is Shadow and Omega. It seems Lancelot and Shadow are variants of one another."
Shadow's brow furrowed slightly, glancing at Percival with sudden recognition.
"Your name wouldn't be Blaze, by any chance?"
She shook her head sharply as she replied.
"Blaze? No. I am Percival, knight of the Round Table. Who's Blaze?"
Shadow waved it off quietly.
"Never mind," he remarked.
Gamma stepped forward stiffly, addressing them.
"I am E-102 Gamma. These allies are Sir Lancelot, Sir Percival, and Honey. We're investigating disturbances in this realm."
Aqua considered their words carefully, then asked gently, "Why did you call me Merlina?"
Percival answered coldly, her gaze guarded.
"Merlina brought ruin to our world, fracturing realms with dark magic. You resemble her."
Aqua stepped forward with determined resolve.
"Look closer. I'm not her. I fight the darkness, I don't serve it."
Percival held Aqua's earnest gaze. Gamma analysed thoughtfully.
"Observation: no malice detected. She appears truthful."
Honey smiled warmly as she chimed in.
"Besides, I love her style!"
"Uhh, thanks..." Aqua replied, taken back by the compliment.
Omega chimed in bluntly, "OBSERVATION: STATEMENT VERIFIED. AQUA SPEAKS WITH HONESTY."
Shadow shifted his gaze toward Lancelot, watching him closely. Though the battle had ended, the tension still lingered in the air like a storm waiting to return.
"For all our sakes," Shadow said, his voice calm but resolute, "let's honour this truce. We've got bigger threats than each other."
Honey gently took Lancelot's arm, her touch soft but purposeful.
"Come on, sweetie," she said sweetly, but firmly. "We agreed on peace. No more fighting your dashing double, the stylish girl, or the walking tank, okay?"
Lancelot let out a low sigh, his head lowering slightly. Though his pride clearly bristled, he gave a reluctant nod, muttering under his breath, "Very well… but only for now."
Honey's attention immediately shifted back to Aqua, her amber eyes brightening with sudden excitement.
"Hey Aqua, your outfit is adorable! Mind if I copy it?"
Aqua blinked, momentarily taken aback.
"I... uh..."
Before she could fully respond, Honey grinned mischievously.
"Thanks! I'll take that as a yes!" she chimed, already excitedly envisioning fabrics and colours to replicate the striking attire.
Percival swiftly interjected, shifting the focus as she continued to carefully assess Aqua.
"What brings you and your companions to this place, Aqua?"
"We're on a journey," Aqua explained calmly, her keyblade held lightly at her side. "We were pulled into White Space by unexpected forces, and now we're searching for a way back, trying to stop the darkness from spreading before it consumes more worlds."
Honey's ears perked, her wide amber eyes full of admiration.
"Fighting darkness? That sounds incredible! You must've seen some amazing stuff!"
"You could say that," Aqua replied with a small, wistful smile.
"Amazing stuff is putting it lightly," Shadow added firmly, arms still crossed. His crimson eyes didn't stray from Lancelot's movements.
"WE HAVE CONFRONTED COUNTLESS THREATS OF DARKNESS," Omega declared from behind them, stepping closer. "REALITIES TRAPPED IN WHITE SPACE. ENTITIES BEYOND DEFINITION. AND WE HAVE PREVAILED."
Gamma turned, his green optics focusing squarely on the newer machine.
"You speak as though you've achieved greatness. But our objective is similar. Preserve integrity of fractured realms and gather Master Emerald shards. Outcome: stabilisation."
"Master Emerald shards?" Aqua blinked, her head tilting slightly. "Why would pieces of the Master Emerald be here…?"
Shadow's gaze narrowed in thought.
"It must be the Master Emerald from their timeline. Pulled into this place like everything else."
"Correct," Lancelot said simply, his voice low. "We've been recovering them one by one."
Shadow gave a subtle nod.
"Makes sense."
Lancelot nodded back. Simple. Blunt. Direct.
"WHITE SPACE IS CHAOS," Omega continued, taking a heavy step forward. "BUT WITH EACH MISSION, WE HAVE REPAIRED THE DAMAGE, FOUGHT BACK THE DARKNESS. WHAT HAVE YOU DONE, GAMMA?"
Gamma's lens flared as his tone sharpened slightly.
"Identical mission. Recovered emerald shards. Eliminated hostiles. Statistics consistent with optimal outcome."
"OPTIMAL? HA. I AM E-123 OMEGA. I AM THE FINAL EVOLUTION OF THE E-SERIES. YOU ARE OBSOLETE."
"Obsolete? Unlikely. Tactical efficiency unmatched. Your bulk suggests inefficient fuel consumption," Gamma replied flatly.
The robotic standoff escalated with sparks of pride and logic colliding in mechanical rhythm.
"ENOUGH!" Shadow and Lancelot both snapped at once, their voices sharp and commanding.
The silence that followed echoed down the mirrored corridor like a final bell toll.
Aqua blinked at the synchronised outburst, then turned to Honey with a small smirk.
"All the Shadow variants are the same, aren't they?"
Honey giggled in response.
"Oh, absolutely. Broody, dramatic, and just a little intense. But hey, at least they're consistent."
Percival, watching quietly, refocused her attention and stepped closer to Aqua. Her eyes narrowed slightly as she gestured to the weapon Aqua held.
"Your blade—it's quite unusual. What exactly is it?"
Aqua lifted Master's Defender, allowing its intricate craftsmanship to catch the faint ambient glow of the corridor.
"This is the Keyblade. It chooses its wielder. It's meant to cut through darkness and has the power to lock or unlock virtually anything."
"Anything? Could it unlock my jewelry box—or maybe serve as a fancy bottle opener?" Honey asked with wide-eyed curiosity, gently poking at the end of Aqua's Keyblade like it might suddenly transform.
Aqua let out a soft chuckle, the moment lightening the heavy atmosphere.
"Not exactly," she replied with a smile. "It's a bit more... specialised."
Percival looked on, her tone thoughtful as she stepped in.
"And this weapon of yours, it's what led you and your allies here?"
"In a way, yes," Aqua said, her voice calm but tinged with something heavier. "I've been sealing Keyholes of trapped worlds. Shadow's been working in parallel, freeing hubs caught in White Space. But I'm also searching for someone. A dear friend. His heart was damaged… and lost."
Honey's hands flew to her chest, her expression shifting to genuine sympathy.
"Aw… that's so sweet. You're going through all this… just for him?"
Aqua nodded quietly, the weight of her journey sitting heavy on her shoulders.
Percival's eyes lingered on her for a moment longer, then softened.
"A noble cause," she said, her voice warmer now. "Perhaps I misjudged you, Aqua."
Aqua offered a grateful smile, but even as the tension eased, she could feel the flicker of unease radiating from the figure beside her. She glanced at Shadow.
His crimson eyes were locked on Lancelot again, unwavering. His body was still, but his energy was coiled and tense.
Then a low mechanical hum cut through the silence.
Gamma stepped forward, his green optic lens glowing dimly as he scanned Aqua with clinical precision. The noise from his systems pulsed softly.
"Scan complete," he intoned. "Subject designation: Aqua. Status: anomaly detected. Classification: incomplete."
Percival frowned slightly.
"Incomplete? What does that mean?"
Aqua exhaled softly, lowering her gaze to the keyblade she held.
"He's right. I'm missing my heart. I'm what's known as a Nobody."
Honey visibly stiffened, ears twitching nervously as she stepped back slightly.
"Wait, missing your heart? Does that make you like a zombie? Or maybe a ghost?"
Shadow answered firmly, stepping protectively beside Aqua.
"She isn't dead or undead. A Nobody is what remains when someone with a strong heart loses it. They retain their form and some memories, but incomplete. They are missing the essence that made them truly whole."
Gamma tilted his head slightly.
"Fascinating. A being without a heart, yet maintaining autonomy and clear purpose. Such phenomena defy logical parameters."
Lancelot's expression darkened in clear skepticism.
"No heart, yet she walks and speaks as though complete. That shouldn't be possible."
Shadow met Lancelot's gaze directly.
"Strange powers often defy logic. The world doesn't always follow what we expect."
Lancelot's grip on his sword tightened again.
"Perhaps. Still, I won't lower my guard."
Honey quickly intervened, sensing the tension rising again.
"Heart or no heart, Aqua seems pretty great! She's fighting the darkness and helping her friends. That's amazing, isn't it?"
Aqua smiled softly, grateful for Honey's enthusiasm, even as Lancelot's skepticism lingered heavily between them.
Percival's eyes grew gentler.
"A Nobody, yet you've accomplished so much. Perhaps you're not as incomplete as you believe."
Aqua relaxed slightly, appreciating the sentiment. But Lancelot had already turned his attention sharply towards Shadow, red eyes narrowing behind his visor.
"Your energy spears, they differ from mine. Why?" Lancelot asked bluntly.
Shadow paused thoughtfully, examining the dark energy still flickering subtly around his fingers.
"My powers are linked to an entity named Black Doom. It's a dark power, both a tool and a burden. I've carried it in my struggle against him."
At the name 'Black Doom,' Lancelot visibly stiffened, a flicker of recognition passing across his face. He masked it quickly, however, choosing to remain silent. Shadow noticed, but didn't press the issue.
Omega broke the moment, mechanical sensors humming quietly as he scanned Lancelot carefully.
"DNA ANALYSIS COMPLETE. SUBJECT LANCELOT POSSESSES IDENTIFCAL GENETIC CODE TO SHADOW. CONCLUSION: ALTERNATE VARIANT OF SHADOW THE HEDGEHOG."
Lancelot raised an brow, returning Shadow's steady gaze.
"Identical DNA? Hmph..."
Shadow folded his arms with a slight smirk.
"That explains the knight getup. I certainly haven't dressed like that before."
Lancelot countered calmly.
"Or perhaps... you're the variant of me?"
Shadow scoffed quietly.
"Wouldn't make much difference either way."
A brief silence settled between them, broken by Gamma's sudden mechanical announcement.
"Energy signature detected nearby. Master Emerald shard located. Retrieval imperative."
Lancelot immediately straightened, decisive.
"We must go, then. No more time to waste."
As the group prepared to depart, Honey turned back to Aqua with hopeful anticipation.
"Will we see each other again, Aqua?"
Aqua smiled warmly, sincerity shining in her blue eyes.
"Maybe. Our paths are unpredictable—but somehow, I feel we will."
Lancelot hesitated a moment before addressing Aqua, his voice surprisingly gentle.
"Your friend, the one you're searching for. What's his name?"
"Ventus," Aqua replied softly.
Lancelot gave a small nod, genuine sympathy in his stance.
"A good name. I hope you find him."
He turned towards Shadow, his tone unexpectedly serious.
"And you, don't let Maria down."
Shadow froze, his eyes widening sharply. Before he could respond, Lancelot turned swiftly and walked away, quickly joined by Honey, Gamma, and Percival.
As Gamma's form gradually disappeared into the distance, Omega remained perfectly still, his glowing red optics dimmed thoughtfully. Aqua noticed the unusual quietness in her mechanical companion and stepped closer, concern evident in her voice.
"Omega?" she asked gently. "Is something wrong?"
Omega hesitated, the usually bold robotic voice becoming unexpectedly reflective.
"GAMMA WAS DESTROYED LONG AGO. SEEING HIM HERE... IT CONFLICTS WITH MY INTERNAL DATA."
Shadow's own voice grew softer, more considerate, as he addressed the robot. "Destroyed? Are you absolutely certain?"
Omega's answer was tinged with confusion—an unusual note for the typically certain machine.
"GAMMA REBELLED AGAINST EGGMAN, RESULTING IN HIS TERMINATION. YET, I CANNOT DENY THAT WAS UNMISTAKABLY HIM."
Aqua gently rested a reassuring hand on Omega's metal arm, offering quiet comfort.
"Perhaps this place offers second chances?"
Omega didn't immediately respond. Instead, he stood there quietly, the subtle hum of internal processes indicating he was deep in contemplation.
Finally, Shadow broke the silence decisively, a hint of urgency creeping back into his tone.
"We should keep moving. They have their path, and we have ours."
Aqua nodded in firm agreement, gripping her keyblade again.
"You're right, Shadow," she replied softly, before looking back to Omega. "Omega, can you lead us to the Safe Zone? I'm sure the others are getting worried."
Omega straightened instantly, as if snapped from a trance.
"AFFIRMATIVE. SILVER WAS GETTING ANXIOUS."
"He was?" Aqua tilted her head curiously, mildly amused at the idea.
"YES."
"What's new there then..." Shadow said deadpan.
Aqua smiled lightly, shaking her head with warm fondness.
"We'd better hurry back then. They won't believe the story we're going to tell them."
Shadow glanced at her, arms crossed loosely as they began to walk side by side behind Omega. His expression was dry, though subtly amused.
"Considering there are already two different versions of you running around, Aqua, I don't think they'll have trouble believing this."
Aqua raised an eyebrow playfully, a teasing smirk forming at the corner of her lips as she looked at him.
"Hmm... maybe they'll think you're actually the variant of Sir Lancelot, Shadow."
Shadow shot her a pointed glance.
"Don't push your luck, Aqua."
Aqua chuckled quietly, the tension fading further as the trio walked steadily onward, leaving the mirrored corridor behind.
Meanwhile...
[White Space - Shadow Generations starts playing]
The trio of Cloud, Tifa, and the Shadow variant followed the lingering darkness across White Space, moving deeper into the realm trapped between time and space. The hedgehog walked ahead, with Cloud and Tifa following close behind.
They moved in silence, only their footsteps echoing softly through the void. But as they walked, Tifa finally spoke, her curiosity getting the better of her.
"So, Shadow... why don't you tell us more about yourself?"
"Hmph," Shadow huffed, his crimson eyes fixed on the pale, colourless horizon. "We should be focusing on finding Sephiroth, Tifa. There's no time to mess around."
"But if we're going to work together, shouldn't we get to know each other?" Tifa countered gently. "Or at least get to know you. This version of Shadow isn't the one we knew."
"That's a valid point," Cloud added, his voice calm and steady.
Shadow exhaled through his nose and shook his head slightly as he walked. He knew he wasn't going to win this one.
"Fine. What do you want to know?" he asked stoically, still facing forward.
"Well, maybe you could start by explaining how you got to Gaia?" Cloud suggested, matching Shadow's blunt tone.
"I told you earlier, it's a long story," Shadow replied flatly.
"Yes, we know," Tifa said with a small smile. "But a version of you being connected to our world is definitely interesting."
Her rust-colored eyes glimmered with curiosity.
Shadow came to a slow stop, prompting the duo behind him to do the same. He turned abruptly, his red gaze lifting to meet theirs.
"You really won't let this go, will you?"
"Nope," Tifa replied playfully. Her tone was lighter now. "We could sweeten the pot though."
"Sweeten the pot...?" Shadow echoed, one brow raised. He folded his arms. "Explain."
Cloud glanced toward her, interest piqued. But his stance remained alert, Sephiroth's lingering presence still pressing at the edge of their awareness.
"Well," Tifa said with a shrug, one hand resting on her hip, "we could tell you more about us. Our past. Maybe compare with your versions of Cloud and Tifa?"
"Okay..." Shadow replied, arms still crossed.
"You really want to do this?" Cloud asked, glancing between the two. His face was unreadable.
"Like I said, if we're going to stop Sephiroth, we need to understand each other," Tifa replied. "We've only fought alongside our Shadow briefly. We need to know more about this version of him."
"Good point," Cloud agreed. "Best we know what we're working with."
Shadow said nothing for a moment. His gaze drifted across the white expanse as his frown deepened. At last, he spoke.
"I won't bore or confuse you too much," he began, voice low. He unfolded his arms and turned slightly, eyes scanning the pale horizon ahead. "But I'll tell you how I ended up on Gaia."
"Okay," Tifa replied, her tone gentle.
Cloud gave a small nod, listening quietly.
"My story began after I helped stop Space Colony ARK from crashing into Mobius..."
Shadow's Flashback:
[White Space - Shadow Generations stops playing. Final Fantasy VII Rebirth's Who Am I plays]
"After Sonic and I stopped the Space Colony and saved the world, I fell to the planet below. My promise to Maria... fulfilled."
The memory showed Super Shadow plummeting down toward Mobius, his golden super form flickering like a fading star about to expire.
"Maria... this is what you wanted, right? This is my promise I made to you..."
"But something happened. Something unexpected. Something that would change my destiny."
As Shadow descended into Mobius's atmosphere, red flames from reentry danced across his body. Then, a tear in space began to form beneath him—radiant, blinding.
Before he could even think, he was swallowed by the light.
"Everything was bright. Full of light. Then... darkness. I saw the memories of the ARK. My time with Maria and the professor. Maybe this was the afterlife? Maybe I could finally see them again?" But I was wrong. Very, very wrong."
"Hey, are you okay?" came a voice. It seemed young, curious, and unfamiliar.
"I opened my eyes and just laid there for a moment. I could see bright blue skies above me and felt the heat of the sun bathing my body. The wind rushed across my fur, but it felt... different. The air wasn't like Mobius. Not the same at all. My mind was full of questions."
"Was this Mobius? Or... somewhere else?"
Shadow sat up slowly, his body aching as he brought a hand to his forehead. His vision was blurred for a moment, but it gradually cleared. Surrounding him was a stretch of craggy terrain, red rocky cliffs, deep canyon drops, and scattered plateaus that stretched under the blue sky. The wind howled softly through the gulch, and the air carried a scent of dry earth and ancient stone.
The hedgehog turned his head slightly and paused. Sitting next to him was a creature unlike any he'd seen before.
Quadrupedal, with dark red-orange fur and a mane of thin brown hair that fluttered slightly in the wind. His single visible ochre eye studied Shadow intently, his right eye was marked with an old scar. His frame was adorned with beads, feathers, and golden braces along his limbs, with strange brands etched into his fur. Most strikingly, the tip of his long tail burned with a steady flame, the light crackling softly but not consuming him.
He looked very much like a guardian out of some myth.
"Where… am I?" Shadow asked, his voice low, disoriented.
"Cosmo…" the creature began, pausing—then cleared his throat and deepened his tone. "Cosmo Canyon," he intoned gravely.
Shadow raised a single brow, unimpressed.
"Mobius?" he asked, narrowing his eyes.
"Mobius?" the beast repeated, tilting his head. "I've never heard of that place."
"I mean the world," Shadow clarified. "Is this world Mobius?"
The creature paused, then shook his head slowly.
"This world is called Gaia."
"Gaia?" Shadow muttered, his gaze sweeping across the canyon once more. "Impossible..."
"Well, it's possible," the creature replied, sitting up a little straighter. "A tear opened in the sky. A rift appeared and you fell out of it. I saw it happen."
"You saw me fall?"
"Yes. The light was bright. It lit up the sky and canyon. I was on patrol, and when I followed the trail, I found you unconscious here."
Shadow slowly rose to his feet. His limbs trembled faintly beneath him, his super form had drained a great deal of energy. Still, he stood tall, forcing his posture to stabilise.
"You seem unsteady," the creature said, concern deep in his tone. "Are you injured?"
"I'm fine," Shadow replied bluntly, brushing off the concern.
He turned again, scanning the surroundings. The cliffs. The emptiness. The quiet.
"Perhaps you should come with me," the creature suggested thoughtfully. "My home is nearby. My grandfather… he may be able to explain more."
"Grandfather?" Shadow repeated, glancing toward him with curiosity.
"His name is Bugenhagen. He is the elder of Cosmo Canyon. He is wise and full of insight."
Shadow didn't reply at first, but his gaze lingered. The creature didn't feel threatening. In fact, there was something oddly familiar about him. Something grounded.
Maybe, they weren't so different.
"Fine," Shadow said at last, nodding. "Take me to him. If he knows anything about how I got here and getting me back, I'll hear him out."
"Very well!" the creature replied with a bit more enthusiasm than expected. He rose to all fours, his tail flame flickering as he turned towards the cliffs. "It's not far, just beyond those ridges."
Shadow stepped forward, but stopped mid-step.
"But I do have one question," he said firmly. His crimson eyes sharpened.
The creature turned back to face him, tilting his head slightly.
"Yes? What is it?"
"Why did you deepen your voice?" Shadow asked flatly.
"My... my voice?" the creature repeated, blinking.
"Yes. Before I woke, your voice was softer. Younger. You changed it."
The creature looked away, ears flicking in embarrassment. His voice faltered slightly.
"Ah… well… I was just… trying to sound more authoritative. You looked like the serious type. I thought… maybe you'd take me more seriously that way."
Shadow narrowed his gaze at the creature.
"So… you're pretending to be older than you are?"
The creature sighed, sitting back down.
"Kind of," he admitted. His voice returned to its natural tone. It was still intelligent, still calm, but lighter now. Less gruff. "My people… we're expected to carry wisdom beyond our years. I try to honour that. Also... I wanted to be treated as an equal, and not as a dog.
Shadow studied him for a long beat. Then… to the creature's surprise, the corner of the hedgehog's mouth quirked. Just slightly.
"Hmph. At least you're honest. I respect that more than fake gravitas."
The creature gave a soft huff.
"I guess I'll drop the act, then. My name is Nanaki by the way."
"Shadow," the hedgehog replied simply.
The two locked eyes for a moment.
Nanaki stood back on all fours and turned again, his tail flicking behind him.
"Come on. Let's get you to Cosmo Canyon before the wind picks up. I can already feel a storm rolling in."
Shadow followed wordlessly, his air shoes crunching against the red rock as they began to move.
[Who am I? stops playing]
Present - White Space
[White Space - Shadow Generations resumes]
"So, Red found you?" Cloud questioned, his tone firm, his eyes narrowed slightly as he looked down at the hedgehog.
"He did," Shadow confirmed with a nod, though his brow furrowed "But… Why do you still call him Red XIII?"
"It stuck, I guess," Tifa replied with a small shrug. "Well... in our version of events, it did anyway."
Shadow shook his head, his expression tightening.
"I hated that name," he muttered, his voice edged with anger. "Hojo branded Nanaki like a twisted experiment… it was cruel."
Cloud and Tifa exchanged solemn glances. They knew that cruelty. They'd lived it. Hojo's name carried more weight than most villains ever could.
"We know," Cloud said, his voice low and cold.
Shadow exhaled deeply through his nose, as if he was pushing away the old anger. He continued his story.
"Nanaki brought me to Bugenhagen. That's where I learned about Gaia… the planet, its history. And that's where I began my quest to find Arondight."
He unsheathed the blade from his back. Its gleaming edge caught the pale ambient light of White Space. His red eyes scanned the weapon, reverent but analytical.
"You never got back home then?" Tifa mused softly, her eyes looking at the weapon.
"Sadly not. I couldn't return to my original time. There were no gateways, no rifts. Nothing left to take me back to my universe. My arrival… was a phenomenon."
Cloud frowned slightly as he looked towards the pale void ahead.
"Some things aren't meant to be explained. Maybe it wasn't an accident. Maybe it was… destiny."
Tifa nodded slowly, her eyes soft with thought.
"Like the planet itself pulled you there. Gaia's been known to do that, to draw in those it needs most."
Shadow turned his head slightly, considering their words. There was a pause before he answered, his tone quieter.
"Maybe you're right," he said. "Maybe fate led me here… not to return, but to fight for something new."
His gaze returned to Arondight.
"So… I made a choice. I chose to spread Maria's message across this world too," Shadow continued, his unwavering focus returning. "I saved Mobius from the Eclipse Cannon. From that 'Final Hazard'. But Gaia needed help too. Especially with the forces of Shinra... and—"
"Sephiroth," Cloud finished sharply.
Shadow nodded in agreement slowly.
"Yes. Whether he's from my world, yours, or some twisted variant... we can't let him continue. He's done too much."
Cloud's fists clenched. The name Sephiroth was a wound that never truly healed.
Tifa nodded, stepping forward. Her voice was calm, but resolute.
"We fight him together. He's already taken enough from us all." She paused, then turned to look at Shadow. "We lost Gaia because of him. His darkness swept through our world, tearing it apart."
Cloud didn't speak. He didn't need to. The pain was etched across his posture, the weight on his shoulders, the flicker of sorrow buried behind his eyes. The anger was silent but unmistakable.
Shadow observed them quietly, then stepped forward to stand beside Tifa. Arondight dropped to his side.
"That's your story, huh?" he said at last. "Fighting the remnants of his darkness. Avenging your fallen world?"
"Yes," Tifa said, her voice quieter now. She wrapped one arm around herself, her gaze drifting downward. "We stopped his original plan. But…"
"He still unleashed destruction on the planet," Cloud said, finally speaking up again. He approached them slowly. "The darkness inside him… it went beyond the Lifestream. Beyond anything we were ready for."
Shadow's fists clenched at his sides. The blade of Arondight shifted slightly in his grip, reacting to the sheer force of his frustration.
"Some of us stayed behind to fight," Tifa said, her voice strained. "Others managed to escape."
"Cid, Yuffie… Aerith," Cloud added. "They fled to safety. Barrett, Red, Cait, Vincent, Tifa, and I stayed. We stopped Sephiroth—but not his darkness. We lost Gaia."
Shadow absorbed every word. The weight of their memories crashed down on him like a tidal wave. But it was one name that echoed louder than the rest.
"…Aerith."
The word slipped from his lips like a breath caught in time.
He turned away slightly, his gaze rising toward the empty, colourless sky. A shadow passed over his features, one of sorrow, guilt… and something deeper.
"Shadow?" Tifa asked gently, catching the sudden shift in his mood. "Did… something happen to Aerith? In your reality?"
The hedgehog was quiet, too quiet. That silence said more than words ever could.
"Tell us," Cloud said firmly. It was not an order, but an invitation to open up.
Shadow sighed, his head lowered. The pain behind his red eyes threatened to surface. He opened his mouth to speak—when a loud, familiar voice boomed across the White Space, shattering the moment like glass.
"You've gotta be shittin' me, Shadow! There's another Cloud and Tifa in this damn place?!"
The trio spun around at the sudden, unmistakable voice, their eyes widening in recognition. Before them walked a hulking mountain of a man: Barret Wallace.
[Barret's theme remake by Enrico Deiana starts playing]
He approached steadily, the pristine emptiness of White Space reflecting faintly off his dark sunglasses. Barret was a heavy-set, muscular, dark-skinned man with a towering presence that demanded attention. His right arm, lost in the tragic destruction of his hometown of Corel, was replaced with a weaponised prosthetic, a formidable rotary-style machine gun gleaming ominously. A thick, well-trimmed beard framed his strong jaw, accentuating the three distinct scars marking his right cheek. Around his neck dangled two worn dog tags, reflecting fragments of his troubled past.
His outfit blended practicality and ruggedness: a worn, dirty brown vest layered over a black tank, green cargo-style pants tucked into sturdy zipper-black boots, and a leather bracer reinforced with metal plates on his remaining forearm. A silver hoop earring shone faintly from his left ear, catching the ambient glow of their strange surroundings. Every step he took radiated determination and strength.
"Barret!" Tifa gasped aloud, stepping back in sheer surprise. "Is that really you?"
"No, it's the damn tooth fairy. Who do you think it is, Tifa?!" Barret grumbled sarcastically, his deep voice reverberating with unmistakable irritation.
Barret stopped just before the group, his sharp gaze shifting between Cloud and Tifa from behind those dark shades. He gave a skeptical grunt.
"Just to be clear: you two ain't from our world, right?" Barret asked firmly.
"No," Cloud replied stoically, meeting Barret's gaze head-on. "We come from another place, another time."
Barret sighed heavily, scratching his head briefly with his remaining hand.
"So, copies then, huh? Man, this place sure likes throwin' curveballs at us." His attention shifted downward, towards the stern black hedgehog. "You sure they're trustworthy, Shadow?"
Shadow nodded slowly, arms folded across his chest.
"They're not a threat. I found them fighting those strange alien creatures that ambushed us earlier," he explained simply, sheathing Arondight with practiced ease.
"The Black Arms," Cloud clarified automatically.
"The what?" Shadow asked sharply, turning towards Cloud in genuine confusion.
"Black Arms? What kinda stupid-ass name is that?" Barret groaned incredulously, shaking his head. "Pain in the ass, more like."
Before Cloud could respond, Tifa swiftly laid a gentle hand on his arm, shooting him a knowing glance. A silent understanding passed between them. It was best not complicate things right now with explanations about this Shadow's connection to the Black Arms. Some things needed to wait.
"Let's just call them monsters for now," Cloud offered simply.
"Or it could have been the Heartless," Tifa chimed in softly.
"Oh, come on! You're makin' up names now…" Barret grumbled, exasperated.
"No, they're real. But then again, it depends on what exactly you fought..." Cloud confirmed bluntly.
"We ain't got time for playin' the monster-namin' game, blondie," Barret shot back impatiently.
Cloud sighed heavily. Tifa smiled faintly, amused at Barret's characteristic bluntness. She had missed this.
"So," Barret continued, narrowing his gaze behind his sunglasses, "why are you two here exactly?"
"They've been tracking Sephiroth as well," Shadow interjected calmly.
Barret straightened slightly, interest clearly piqued as he eyed Cloud and Tifa again.
"You two been chasin' after that silver-haired bastard too, huh? You sensin' his dark presence around… wherever the hell this is?"
"This place is called White Space," Cloud explained flatly, gesturing around at the endless expanse of white. "Somewhere trapped between time and space."
"Listen, merc," Barret scoffed dismissively, "I don't care if we're in White Space, Blue Space, or some damn carnival funhouse. We got a job to do."
Cloud's expression softened into weary amusement, a brief memory flickering in his eyes.
"Same old Barret," he murmured under his breath, loud enough only for himself.
"And that job," Barret continued firmly, unaware of Cloud's quiet remark, "is takin' Sephiroth down for good. We shut that bastard down, and maybe we can finally get home. This place is giving me a damn migraine!"
"I'm guessing Shadow's working with you, then?" Tifa asked gently, her eyes drifting down towards the stern hedgehog.
"He's part of AVALANCHE," Barret confirmed with a firm nod, his tone proud despite the irritation moments ago. "Least, our version of it. Him and that sword have got us outta some tight spots."
"I see…" Tifa murmured, her voice quiet and contemplative as her gaze settled fully on Shadow.
Shadow gave a brief nod, then turned sharply on his heel. Without a word, he strode forward slowly, each step striking the endless white ground with purpose. The silence around him only amplified the steady rhythm of his boots. As he moved, he reached back and smoothly sheathed Arondight across his back, his posture radiating unwavering resolve.
"Come on," Shadow called firmly, not bothering to look back. "We can talk later, after the mission's complete."
Cloud nodded in immediate agreement, shifting his gaze towards Barret and Tifa.
"He's right. Sephiroth is still out there. We have to keep moving."
Barret smirked confidently, lifting his gun-arm slightly as the rotary barrels spun once in anticipation.
"Well, lucky for you, I'm here to kick the One-Winged Angel's ass too!" His sunglasses reflected White Space's pale glow. "We all got dragged here by somethin' unseen. I bet good gil it links back to Sephiroth."
Cloud shrugged slightly, tone calm but cautious.
"Maybe he's part of it. But there's a lot more going on here than just Sephiroth."
Barret tilted his head, clearly confused.
"Come again?"
"Let's just follow Shadow," Tifa interjected gently, turning towards the hedgehog already ahead of them. "We'll get you up to speed as we move."
Barret let out a deep sigh, nodding reluctantly.
"Sounds like a plan." He gestured with his machine gun arm towards Shadow, already becoming a silhouette against the infinite white. "But if you two tell me there's another version of that hedgehog runnin' around here, I might need to lie down."
Cloud paused, giving Barret a sideways glance.
"About that…"
Barret visibly tensed, shoulders slumping dramatically.
"Aw, hell no! One Shadow's enough." He turned to Cloud pointedly, sunglasses reflecting his stern gaze. "And we sure as hell don't need two Clouds walkin' around either!"
Cloud blinked once, deadpan.
"Thanks…"
Tifa chuckled warmly at their exchange, already several steps ahead, her back turned towards the two men as she shook her head fondly. It was just like old times, Cloud and Barret bickering, camaraderie shining through the tough exteriors.
"Just like before," she mused quietly to herself, nostalgia tugging gently at her heart. Memories of Gaia flooded her thoughts, of seemingly simpler days, their trials, friendships forged in fire and combat. A gentle smile tugged at her lips, easing some of the sorrow she'd carried too long.
Cloud and Barret exchanged a quick glance, then both nodded silently in shared understanding, letting their friendly rivalry slip behind them. Without another word, the two fell into step behind Tifa, following her lead to catch up with Shadow.
Another chapter down! This one almost ran longer, but I realised that Shadow and Aqua Prime's arrival into the Safe Zone deserves its own moment, and its own chapter. Don't worry, we're slowly ramping up to more action… I swear!
Thanks again for the continued support. I've really started to find my writing groove again, and it feels great to be back in the rhythm.
So, Terra found something interesting in the Safe Zone. Big Sonic fans might recognise it. Let the theories begin!
Huge thanks to Aragorn II Elessar for brainstorming help, and a massive shoutout to Terrence Johnny Stanford and the crossover with his heroes from Lancelot Generations! This scene ties directly into Chapter 4 - The Eyes Are Watching. I did tweak and adapt some of the dialogue to fit my narrative flow and added a few new exchanges, especially the back-and-forth between Omega and Gamma.
This chapter also dives deeper into the KH x Blue Blur Saga versions of Cloud and Tifa, giving more insight into their backstory. Gaia was part of the Lanes Between, but seemingly Sephiroth's darkness overtook it. Aerith, Cid, and Yuffie survived, escaping first to Radiant Garden and eventually Traverse Town. Cloud and Tifa… weren't as lucky. It seems they've been wandering the Lanes for years, carrying the weight of that loss. There's still more to explore here, but I'll do my best to weave it all together meaningfully.
We also got more backstory on FFVII AU Shadow, who was found by Nanaki after falling through a rift post-SA2. His story deviates from the mainline Sonic timeline, offering a unique "what if" scenario: What if Shadow never returned to Mobius after the ARK? That path alone could be its own story someday (and yes, I do plan to adapt his journey into a standalone project eventually). If anyone wants to brainstorm or throw in ideas for Shadow in FFVII, I'm all ears!
Also… Barret is here! I've been waiting to include him properly in the Cloud/Tifa side arc. It's just one big scene for now, but this is laying groundwork for a separate small story later with the group taking on Sephiroth.
Shoutout to Enrico Deiana—I used his remix of Barret's Theme in this chapter. His video game music and remixes are top tier. You can find him on YouTube and Spotify. (Disclaimer: I don't own the music, I'm just using it as a tribute and for inspiration.)
Quick nod to Doctor Who fans: Collision Aqua picked up the Sonic Screwdriver. This was a fun reference to her origin in Collision of Universes, another multiverse saga from the master himself, Aragorn II Elessar.
Also, you may have noticed that I rewrote and improved the Sonic and Naminé scene from Chapter 14 from Chain of Generations. It's been tweaked from its original COG version to better match current continuity. In the original, Sonic got a memory headache from the yellow Chaos Emerald—but here, the emerald is fake, so no headache. That memory sequence will appear in a new spot once I update Sonic's story.
Loved sneaking in Axel too, he's always fun. This directly ties into Chapter 16 - Strangers and Shadows, where it's revealed he's assigned to protect Naminé while Terios is going all "destroy Sonic" mode. (That chapter is on the list for a big rewrite, don't worry.)
That's it for now! The next chapter brings us fully into the Safe Zone with Shadow and Aqua Prime arriving—and after that, we're diving back into the adventure.
Before I sign off, I've got a favour to ask:
I'm looking to include fan theories on the Blue Blur Saga's TV Tropes page! If you've been following closely and have any fun theories—about characters, plot threads, or mysteries you think are still unfolding I'd love to hear them. Throw your ideas at me and let's shake things up with speculation!
As always, thanks for reading, supporting me.
On to the next one!
