Chapter 5: Return to Olympus
Olympus gleamed beneath the warm, late-afternoon sun, a golden realm of towering marble columns and billowing clouds. Percy Jackson paused briefly at the foot of the gleaming stairs, his heart a conflicted knot of familiarity and unease. Ten years had passed since he'd last stepped foot on Olympus, a decade spent purposefully in quiet exile. Yet here he stood again, called back into a world he'd tried desperately to leave behind.
He felt Selena's gaze softly fixed upon him, radiating gentle encouragement.
"It's beautiful, isn't it?" he murmured gently, leaning slightly toward his daughter.
She nodded quietly, eyes glistening with admiration. "Even after everything, it's exactly how you always described it—magnificent, a little overwhelming."
Percy chuckled softly. "Sounds about right."
Artemis stood quietly at his other side, regal and reserved, her own gaze determinedly forward. Percy found himself wondering exactly how he'd ended up returning in such unexpected company.
"Welcome home, my boy!" came Poseidon's booming, enthusiastic greeting as the trio reached the grand plaza. The Sea God stood tall, arms spread wide in exuberant welcome, ocean-green eyes twinkling warmly beneath silver-streaked hair.
Percy felt an immediate wave of relief wash over him as Poseidon enveloped him in a hearty embrace. "Hey, Dad," he murmured, genuinely moved by his father's warmth.
Poseidon stepped back slightly, studying Percy with a proud, approving smile. "Ten years, Percy—too long. It warms my heart to see you back on Olympus, even under dire circumstances."
"Thanks," Percy said quietly. He noted Poseidon's gentle nod toward Selena, a familiar, affectionate acknowledgment between grandfather and granddaughter. Clearly, they'd already met. "And how is my granddaughter treating you? Misbehaving yet?"
Percy grinned lightly, eyes flicking playfully toward Selena. "No worse than I ever did."
Poseidon laughed heartily, reaching out and squeezing Selena's shoulder gently. "Good girl, keeping him on his toes, I trust?"
Selena smiled fondly. "Always, Grandfather."
Percy rolled his eyes slightly, good-naturedly. Artemis watched their exchange with subtle curiosity, sensing a familial dynamic she quietly envied yet felt hesitant to join.
Their entrance into the Olympian council chamber was met with intense curiosity. A cluster of minor gods and goddesses glanced up from their tasks, openly fascinated. Percy felt Artemis tense slightly beside him, her silver gaze sharpening with subtle disapproval.
It was Aphrodite who reacted most dramatically, instantly halting her discussion with a flustered nymph to sweep gracefully across the floor, eyes fixed intently upon Percy. "Oh my gods, Perseus Jackson," her melodic voice dripping effortlessly with charm and allure. "Look at you! Time has treated you… exceptionally."
She placed a gentle hand on Percy's arm, smiling beguilingly. Percy instantly felt his pulse quicken involuntarily, an uncomfortable fog briefly dulling his thoughts.
"It's been far too long since I've seen you, dear Percy," Aphrodite purred smoothly, rich charm speak oozing from every word, tracing her finger along Percy's chest. "You've become even more... intriguing. You must let me show you Olympus again; you'd be amazed how delightful my chambers have become over the years. Perhaps you'd allow me to show you the pleasures Olympus offers?"
Nearby, Ares watched incredulously, scowling deeply as Aphrodite shamelessly laid on her charm. "Seriously?" he growled, folding his muscular arms tightly, fiery eyes narrowed jealously. "Right here, Aphrodite? Really?"
Aphrodite ignored him completely, leaning closer to Percy. "Honestly, Percy, it would be positively tragic if you wasted your visit here on dreary meetings alone."
Percy blinked rapidly, forcing the hazy warmth away, feeling Artemis's irritated presence at his side steadying him, "I appreciate it, Aphrodite," Percy managed politely but firmly, gently disentangling his arm from her grasp. "Maybe another time."
Aphrodite's eyes twinkled mischievously. "I'll hold you to that, hero." She flashed Artemis a brief, knowing glance, lips curled into a teasing smirk before sweeping gracefully away.
Ares scowled openly as she passed, muttering under his breath. Artemis, standing silently beside them, observed Aphrodite's blatant flirtation with quiet disapproval, her features carefully neutral despite a faint tension in her stance.
Selena caught Artemis's subtle reaction and nudged her lightly, whispering innocently, "Everything alright, Lady Artemis?"
Artemis composed herself quickly, eyes coolly neutral once more. "Perfectly fine, Selena."
Hermes sidled up beside Percy, whispering conspiratorially. "Honestly, Perce, a decdade away, and you still have Olympus wrapped around your finger? Teach me your ways."
Percy chuckled softly, shaking his head. "Trust me, Hermes—it's way more trouble than it's worth."
Percy joined Selena and Artemis as they approached the central table, where Athena poured over reams of paper. Artemis glanced briefly at Percy, voice dry yet composed. "She's persistent as ever."
Percy chuckled softly, feeling strangely warmed by Artemis's rare humor. "Always was."
Athena, looking thoroughly unimpressed by Aphrodite's display, cleared her throat pointedly, drawing attention back to the strategic table. "As fascinating as this reunion undoubtedly is, we do have urgent matters to discuss."
Percy stepped forward gratefully, studying the intricate maps spread across the table. Athena's eyes softened briefly as she met his gaze. "Welcome back, Percy. Your tactical insight has been sorely missed."
He nodded respectfully. "I'm here to help however I can, Lady Athena"
Hermes hurriedly stepped forward, pointing out logistical plans arranged meticulously across Olympus. "We've managed to conceal the increase in activity, masking it as routine commerce. Hephaestus's forge runs day and night producing automatons and weaponry."
Hephaestus grunted affirmatively, sparks flickering from his fingertips as he adjusted mechanical schematics. "These will significantly bolster our defenses—but secrecy remains paramount."
Poseidon nodded solemnly. "The ocean forces rally discreetly. Triton is coordinating aquatic allies to move unnoticed."
"Demeter and Apollo organize harvest spirits and healers," Athena continued smoothly. "Artemis?"
Artemis stepped forward confidently, silver eyes determined. "My Hunters and wilderness spirits will secure our perimeter and ensure secrecy remains intact."
Athena gave her an approving nod, shifting her gaze back to Percy. "Both Camp Half-Blood and Camp Jupiter are quietly assembling, coordinated discreetly via Iris-messages. Clarisse, Reyna, and Frank Zhang are on alert, ready but cautious."
Percy nodded thoughtfully, considering the strategic implications. As he did so, Selena quietly moved beside him, a gentle smile teasing her lips. "You're fitting right back in, Dad."
Percy raised an eyebrow inquisitively, sensing deeper meaning beneath her innocent expression. Selena merely smiled, eyes dancing with amusement, her eyes flickering subtly toward Artemis.
Percy shook his head slightly, deciding not to comment, but couldn't stop a faint smile forming despite himself.
Outside, Olympus quietly fortified itself. Automatons assembled silently in Hephaestus's fiery forges. Under Poseidon's subtle guidance, the oceans stirred invisibly, while Demeter's bountiful harvests secured Olympian stores. Hermes moved quickly, invisibly guiding logistics and material shipments unnoticed.
Yet beneath this gentle facade, every deity sensed urgency sharpening the air like the edge of a blade.
Percy walked slowly through Olympus's gleaming marble halls, seeking relief from the lingering weight of the strategic council. The soft flicker of torches cast gentle shadows along the corridor walls, leading him instinctively toward the Olympian armory—a familiar space that, despite its nature, held a quiet sense of calm.
As he stepped inside, he paused at the threshold. Artemis stood alone by a sturdy wooden worktable, methodically inspecting silver arrows, her movements careful, precise, and methodical. Percy watched for a moment, slightly surprised by the simple practicality of the scene.
Artemis glanced up, sensing his presence immediately. Her silver eyes briefly held his in calm acknowledgment. "Perseus," she greeted dryly, her voice lightly teasing, "escaping the council already?"
He chuckled softly, stepping toward the table. "Something like that. But, uh, you know—Percy is fine. 'Perseus' makes me feel like I'm about to be smited by Zeus."
Artemis raised an amused eyebrow, continuing her careful work. "Noted. Percy, then." She glanced briefly up again, a faint smile teasing her lips. "No smiting intended."
He smiled appreciatively, leaning slightly against the table, curiously observing the procedure. Artemis returning her attention to an arrow shaft she held up to the lamplight.
Percy approached, leaning against the opposite side of the table, eyeing the finely crafted arrows with quiet admiration. "I always imagined you conjuring these things out of moonbeams or something."
A faint, amused smile tugged at Artemis's lips. "Even goddesses rely on more mundane equiment sometimes. Simplicity and precision matters in battle, after all."
Percy chuckled quietly, nodding. "Fair enough. I learned pretty early to appreciate having good gear. Saved my life more times than I can count."
Artemis raised an eyebrow slightly, her eyes still on the arrow. "So I recall. Although I distinctly remember your attempts at archery being… less than impressive."
Percy groaned lightly, laughing despite himself. "You had to remember that, didn't you?"
"One doesn't easily forget such tragedies," Artemis replied dryly, though her eyes sparkled gently with humor. "Fortunately, Selena clearly inherited her archery skills elsewhere."
Percy's expression softened with quiet pride. "Yeah, I noticed. I'm glad she's found something she's so good at. Honestly, it's comforting knowing she has you and your Hunters to guide her."
Artemis hesitated briefly, as if slightly uncomfortable with the warmth of Percy's words. Quickly regaining her natural composure, she inclined her head politely. "Selena's wisdom and skill have made her a welcome addition. She's clearly been raised well in her time."
Percy smiled faintly, eyes thoughtful. "I still barely know her, and yet—it's strange how natural it feels, being her dad."
"Family ties are powerful," Artemis said quietly, though her tone was neutral and carefully reserved. "Time often does little to diminish their strength."
Percy nodded, sensing Artemis's guarded caution. Respecting her natural boundaries, he shifted the conversation lightly. "Anyway, archery was never my strong suit. I guess I'll stick to swords and water powers."
Artemis inclined her head slightly, a faint note of dry amusement in her voice. "A wise choice. Perhaps it's best we each excel in our own domains."
At that moment, footsteps softly approached, breaking their gentle reverie. Selena appeared quietly in the doorway, pausing briefly as she observed the dynamic between her parents. A faint, satisfied smile appeared briefly before she spoke.
"Dad? Lady Artemis?" Selena asked gently. "Athena sent me—they're ready again."
Percy glanced warmly at Artemis, standing up straight and adjusting his stance. "Duty calls again."
Artemis carefully picked up her bow, her expression quietly composed but warm. "Then let's not keep them waiting."
They moved together toward Selena, whose satisfied expression deepened subtly as she observed the friendly, undeniable ease the two now shared.
