Disclaimer: I do not own Naruto.
"I… may have overdone it," Naruto muttered, scratching his cheek awkwardly as he stared down at Jūgo's unconscious body.
Jūgo was slumped against the jagged wall of the cave, the stone behind him cracked from the sheer force of impact. Dust still floated in the air, glowing faintly in the dim light filtering through the cracks above.
Sasuke's footsteps echoed off the cavern walls as he approached. "He's one of ours, idiot. How could you be so careless?"
Naruto winced and glanced over his shoulder. Sasuke and Sakura were rushing toward him. Sakura's eyes were sharp, clear, and blazing with fury. Naruto's sheepish grin twitched.
"Well… I'm glad you're back to normal, Sakura-chan," he said, rubbing the back of his neck. "Haruhi really did a number on you guys, huh?"
"Yeah. Me too," Sakura replied flatly, not even sparing him a glance as she dropped to her knees beside Jūgo. Her hands glowed faintly with green healing chakra as she examined him. "You might've hit him a little too hard."
"S-Sorry," Naruto said, his laugh weak and breathless. "He went full rampage there at the end. I didn't have much choice."
Sakura pressed her palm gently to Jūgo's chest, then exhaled. "He'll be fine. Just unconscious. He'll need rest, but nothing critical."
Sasuke's shoulders relaxed slightly. Naruto blew out a breath of relief and scratched the back of his head, still looking guilty.
Then a deep rumble rolled through the tunnels—subtle at first, like a tremor, then louder, echoing from further inside the mountain.
Sasuke's head snapped up.
"Haruhi," Sakura muttered, rising to her feet in one fluid motion. Her brow furrowed, eyes narrowing with cold resolve. "He's mine."
Before either of them could respond, Sakura was already sprinting down the tunnel, chakra surging in her limbs. Her steps cracked against the stone as she disappeared into the shadows without hesitation, every muscle trained on her target.
Naruto blinked after her. "Uh-oh."
Sasuke gave the faintest smirk.
"I know I promised I wouldn't kill anyone," he said, his voice low with amusement. "But Sakura didn't."
And then he was gone too, his cloak flicking behind him as he launched into pursuit.
Naruto stared after them, exasperated. "Great. Guess I'm on clean-up duty."
He looked down at Jūgo and sighed. "Kage Bunshin no Jutsu!"
A shadow clone popped into place beside him, immediately bending to heft Jūgo over his shoulder with a grunt.
"Take him outside and keep watch," Naruto said. The clone gave a curt nod and vanished down one of the side tunnels with Jūgo's limp body in tow.
Cracking his knuckles, Naruto turned toward the direction Sakura and Sasuke had gone.
"Oi! Not fair! You two got a head start!"
And with that, he dashed after them.
Suigetsu didn't know how much longer he could hold out. His breaths came in shallow gasps, sweat slicking his forehead as he staggered back, barely managing to keep on his feet. The poison coursing through his system was slow and agonizing—each movement sent a sharp pulse of heat through his limbs, eating away at his strength. Whatever that deranged doctor had injected into him, it was working fast.
Across from him, Haruhi stood with a wild glint in his eyes, his red hair matted with sweat and streaked with dirt. He was panting, blood smeared across his cheek—but he was smiling. Like all of this was just a game.
"Getting tired, water boy?" Haruhi taunted, head tilting with mock curiosity. "You could always stop resisting. Join me. Be something new—something better. My next experiment could be my masterpiece."
Suigetsu spat a bloody grin onto the cave floor.
"Been there, done that," he muttered. "No thanks."
Haruhi pouted like a disappointed child. "Shame."
Without warning, he ripped an explosive tag from his sleeve and hurled it high into the air. The paper glowed bright red as it arced toward the ceiling. Suigetsu barely managed to dive aside before it detonated.
The blast rocked the cave with a thunderous roar. Shards of rock broke loose from the ceiling, raining down like jagged spears. The ground heaved beneath him, and Suigetsu collapsed to one knee, coughing, vision blurred.
"Sh-Shit," he rasped. The mountain was coming down around them.
The air was thick with dust and chaos—and then, he heard her.
"SHANNARO!"
A powerful shockwave tore through the falling debris as Sakura burst in, her fist colliding with a massive chunk of rock and shattering it to dust mid-air.
She landed beside Suigetsu in a crouch, eyes blazing with fury, hair clinging to her face in the humid air.
"You okay?" she asked, not even out of breath.
"Never better," Suigetsu wheezed, his body wobbling slightly. "The lunatic stuck me with something nasty."
Sakura knelt beside him, one hand glowing green as she pressed it lightly to his chest. Her brow furrowed the moment she felt the unstable chakra in his system. "You've got poison in your bloodstream. Damn it..."
Just ahead of them, Haruhi was already slipping into the shadows of the tunnel, his cackling echoing off the cave walls.
"Son of a—!" Sakura growled, her eyes burning with the desire to chase.
But before she could even get up, a blur of black whipped past her.
Sasuke.
His cloak snapped behind him as he dashed into the narrowing cave path, his expression dark and murderous, Sharingan spinning wildly.
"I've got it," was all he said, voice low and lethal, as he disappeared after Haruhi.
"Oi!" Naruto called from behind, a flash of orange and yellow. "Sasuke-teme! Wait for me!"
Sakura watched them vanish, then exhaled sharply through her nose, forcing herself to stay calm. Her fists clenched.
"Damn it."
Suigetsu gave her a weak smirk. "If Sasuke kills him, I'm not complaining."
"Focus on staying alive," Sakura said, eyes narrowing. "We're not done yet."
And in the distance, down the winding throat of the mountain, the hunt was on.
Naruto and Sasuke caught up to Haruhi in seconds, their footsteps echoing through the cavern like thunder rolling in a storm. The tunnel had narrowed into a jagged, suffocating dead end. Slick stone walls curved up around them, glistening with moisture and glowing faintly from the mineral veins embedded in the rock.
There was no exit. No light. No salvation.
Haruhi stood panting in the center of the stone chamber, wild-eyed and desperate. Crimson hair clung to his pale face, soaked with sweat and streaked with blood. His gaze darted madly from wall to wall, searching for a way out. But the only path was blocked—by Naruto's silent fury and Sasuke's cold, murderous gaze.
He froze as the weight of the Sharingan fell upon him like a hammer, locking him in place.
"You're cornered," Sasuke said, his voice low and venomous, his sword gleaming in the half-light. "No more tricks. Why did you target Sakura? Why go to such lengths to get her?"
Haruhi's breath hitched, but then he let out a brittle, broken laugh that echoed eerily off the cavern walls.
"Why?" he repeated, eyes gleaming with something far too close to madness. He slowly turned, arms spread as if to welcome them. "Because I'm a secret admirer. Have been for years. Since before Orochimaru brought you into the fold."
Sasuke's grip on his sword tightened. His lip curled in disgust.
"I was there, you know," Haruhi continued, eyes locked onto Sakura's absence like it haunted him. "Back during the Chūnin Exams. Hidden in the trees. Watching. Observing. I saw the way she looked at you. The tenderness when she held you after your curse mark flared. The way she threw herself between you and death without hesitation. That moment... that devotion—it burned itself into me."
Sasuke's stomach turned.
"You were there?" Naruto growled, his eyes shadowed with rage.
"Orochimaru wanted me to watch you," Haruhi said. "Before he went soft. Back when he still had ambition. But I... I watched her. And I never stopped." His gaze darkened. "Sakura... she's extraordinary. The most brilliant mind I've ever worked with. And manipulated."
His voice took on a reverent, almost loving tone. "Of course, she broke through my mind control. She's strong. So strong. Beautiful. Sharp as a blade. That's why she's perfect."
Sasuke's jaw clenched. "And all of this… Was it just some sick game to you?"
"Not a game," Haruhi corrected, lifting a finger. "An experiment. A test. One I hoped she would one day choose to join. I thought I'd bought enough time distracting you two." He sighed dramatically. "But alas. I underestimated her. Again."
"You really think you're walking away from this?" Naruto's voice was barely more than a growl. "After you kidnapped Hinata? After you tried to control Sakura-chan?"
Haruhi's eyes gleamed. "Oh, I know I will. You think I'd let myself be caught? Please. I'm as slippery as a snake. There's always a back door."
"Not this time," Sasuke snapped.
"This time, we're gonna kick your ass," Naruto added, the Nine-Tails' chakra beginning to blaze around him.
Haruhi's grin widened as he reached into his coat and pulled out a vial filled with an iridescent liquid. Without hesitation, he downed it in a single gulp.
"Bring it on," he snarled.
Sasuke lunged first, his sword slicing through the air with deadly precision. Haruhi twisted away, leaping off the cavern wall, bounding toward Naruto. But clones exploded into existence, surrounding him. One of them dropkicked Haruhi square in the chest, sending him tumbling back.
But something was changing.
Haruhi's body began to twitch and ripple, bones popping and shifting beneath his skin. His screams twisted into guttural laughter.
"Something's wrong," Naruto warned.
"I see it," Sasuke said, eyes wide, Sharingan spinning.
Haruhi's crimson hair turned pale, the color bleeding out until it became pure white. His skin grew ashen. And then, with a sickening crack, a third eye opened on his forehead—bleeding, gleaming, watching.
"What the—?"
Haruhi lifted his face toward them and grinned.
"I took Ōtsutsuki Kaguya's DNA," he said, voice deeper now, laced with power. "And I made it better. It wasn't hard. Sakura-sama practically gave me the sample herself."
"What?" Naruto asked.
"When you sealed Kaguya away," Haruhi explained, voice alight with manic triumph, "You couldn't have done it without her. Sakura's fist—her beautiful, unstoppable hand—pressed down on Kaguya's head. And when she did... Ōtsutsuki Kaguya left a trace. Just a speck. Just enough. I scraped it off Sakura's knuckles later, like a love letter."
Realization dawned on Sasuke.
"You scraped Kaguya's DNA from her hand?"
"What a freak," Naruto muttered, face contorted in disgust. "You're a stalker. You're creeping me the hell out."
"Stalker?" Haruhi tilted his head, eyes glowing. "No. I love her. I've loved her for years. And you—" He jabbed a finger toward Sasuke, "—you never deserved her. You never appreciated her the way I do."
His grin twisted into something monstrous. "But once I kill you... once you're gone... she'll finally be mine. She'll understand. She has to. It's fate."
Sasuke took a step forward, chakra humming dangerously around him. His expression was pure ice.
"You're delusional."
"And you're dead," Haruhi whispered, the eye on his forehead blazing.
"So this Dorobō Haruhi," Kakashi said, eyes narrowing as he scanned the thick dossier spread across his desk. The report had contributions from Shikamaru, Kabuto—and even Orochimaru, whose involvement alone made Kakashi uneasy. "He's originally from Amegakure?"
"Some street rat Orochimaru scooped up when Amegakure was in shambles," Shikamaru replied grimly, arms crossed as he leaned against the edge of the desk. "No family. No records. Just raw talent and too much time in Orochimaru's labs."
Kakashi exhaled through his nose. "And the obsession with Sakura?"
Shikamaru grimaced. "Been going on for years. Since the Chūnin Exams, from what we've pieced together. He's been lurking in the background, watching. Planning. Fixated."
Kakashi's shoulders slumped slightly as he ran a hand through his silver hair, weariness lining his voice. "Years. Of course."
"Yeah," Shikamaru said, voice tight. "Creepy as hell. But from Sai's last transmission, apparently Team Oboro was in on everything. Which means there might be a leak of some kind in Amegakure."
"Or they went rogue," Kakashi muttered, setting the report down. His gaze drifted toward the window, where clouds hovered low over Konoha like a bad omen. "Whatever comes, I just hope they're ready."
"Team Seven is practically invincible," Shikamaru said, but there was an edge of hesitation behind the confidence.
Kakashi's eye creased into a faint smile, though it didn't reach his voice. "Let's hope 'practically' is enough this time."
Sakura's brow furrowed in sharp concentration, sweat beading along her hairline as she hovered her glowing hands over Suigetsu's chest. The soft green of her chakra pulsed steadily, weaving through his body to isolate and expel the poison burning through his veins.
Suigetsu flinched, a sharp hiss escaping his lips as she moved her fingers with featherlight precision along his ribs.
"Damn, sensei," he groaned through clenched teeth. "You trying to pull the poison out or rip my insides apart?"
"Hold still," Sakura said, voice tight. "The toxin is fused near your major pathways. Just a few more minutes and I'll have it out."
An explosion boomed deeper within the mountain, and the walls of the cave trembled violently. Dust rained from above, and a chunk of rock fell loose and crashed somewhere nearby.
"I don't think we have a few more minutes," Suigetsu said grimly, eyes flicking toward the shuddering walls.
"Sasuke-kun and Naruto are handling it." Sakura didn't even flinch, her focus unshaken. "You should have a little more faith."
Suigetsu gave her a wry, crooked smile, sweat glistening at his temples. "I can see why he loves you."
Sakura's hands faltered for half a heartbeat. A flush rose to her cheeks, but she didn't look away from her work.
"I need to concentrate," she said, voice clipped.
Suigetsu grunted as another pulse of chakra dug into the toxin, drawing more of it out. A sickly purple fluid began to seep from his skin into the vial she'd prepared beside him.
"You always keep your head," Suigetsu said quietly, watching her through half-lidded eyes. "Even when everything's falling apart. It's that unwavering faith of yours. That's what got to him, you know."
Sakura didn't reply. She just kept working, hands glowing steady and bright in the dim light of the unstable cave.
Another explosion echoed in the distance.
And still, Sakura did not stop.
"Damn it!" Naruto snarled as Haruhi grabbed one of his clones by the throat and hurled it into the others like a missile. The resulting explosion of chakra dispersed the entire squad in a cloud of smoke and dust. "Why the hell is he so strong?!"
"I told you," Haruhi cackled, his voice ringing with manic glee. "Kaguya's DNA is amplifying my power. I'm not just strong—I'm evolution incarnate. You can't stop me. I will win."
"Like hell you are!" Naruto growled, the red flicker of Kurama's chakra curling around him like flame.
"Not today," Sasuke said coldly, his Sharingan gleaming. "Chidori!"
"Rasengan!"
Both shinobi launched at Haruhi from opposite sides, their chakra crackling with lethal force. But Haruhi only laughed—sharp, wild, and ecstatic—as he vaulted into the air with unnatural speed.
"This is fun! I haven't had this much fun in years!" he shouted. "All those hours in the lab. All that meticulous research. And now—now—I get to field test it! Tell me—on a scale of one to ten, how much pain are you in?"
With a roar of exertion, Haruhi twisted mid-air and slammed both fists down onto their skulls. The sheer brute force drove Naruto and Sasuke into the rocky ground with a thunderous impact, sending shockwaves through the cavern.
Dust and debris swirled in the air like a storm cloud, the cavern echoing with the aftershock of Haruhi's blow. High above the wreckage, he hovered—smirking, eyes wild with power, savoring the chaos he'd wrought.
"Oi, teme," Naruto hissed, pushing himself up from the rubble, his brow bloody and eyes blazing. "Are you really going to let this psycho steal Sakura-chan?"
"Not in a million years," Sasuke growled, his voice low and dangerous, lightning crackling down his arm as he rose beside him.
Naruto wiped a smear of blood from his cheek. "Then let's go kick his ass."
But before either of them could make their move, the ceiling above them cracked with a thunderous crack. A blur of pink and green burst through the falling stone.
A single fist came crashing down from above, colliding with Haruhi's skull mid-laugh.
BOOM.
Haruhi went flying across the cavern like a ragdoll, slamming into the far wall with such force that stone craters had been formed from the impact alone.
"SHANNARO!"
Haruno Sakura had arrived.
Pink hair whipped in the wake of her power, green eyes locked on the enemy with unwavering intensity.
Sasuke stared at her, momentarily frozen. That strength, that determination, that unrelenting spirit—it radiated from her in waves. And in that moment, she was breathtaking. Fierce, radiant, unstoppable.
"I couldn't let you guys have all the fun," Sakura said with a smirk, cracking her knuckles as she strode forward. "Suigetsu's fine. I sent him to find Sai."
She turned her head just enough to glance back at them—and the fire in her eyes made Sasuke's heart stutter. There was blood on her gloves, determination in every step, and something wild and unshakable in her grin.
Naruto whooped. "Now that's what I'm talking about!"
He cracked his neck and flared with Kyuubi chakra, the ground beneath him splitting under the pressure. "Let's go, Team Seven!"
Sasuke drew his sword in a single motion, the blade gleaming in the dim light. "Let's do this."
