Sorry for the delay, been writing and publishing "The Speedster and the Spider" and other stories. I know some of you would prefer the next chapter of that story, but this update is a long time coming and what better time than on the first anniversary of me releasing the first chapter.
Had to republish chapter 1. While writing "The Speedster and The Spider," I've been binging season 8 (and later, 9) and had to include things from the show that I forgot about.
I mention "The Speedster and the Spider" later in the chapter and when it takes place during this one, which is meant to be between chapters 11 and 12.
I know it's two months late, but considering that he co-wrote "The Amazing Spider-Man 2," as well as the Kelvin Timeline "Star Trek" movies, the "Bayformers" films, and has created and produced TV shows like "Scorpion" and "Transformers Prime," R.I.P. Roberto Orci.
Chapter 2
Caitlin enters the Moondance Diner and sits at a table near an exit.
"Can I get you anything?" Asked a waiter who walked up to her table.
"Just coffee for now, thanks." Caitlin replied.
The waiter started to pour the coffee. "So moving to the city? Gonna do the whole "Three bucks, two bags, one me" thing?" He asked.
"Huh?"
"Your carry-on bag. You gonna be a Broadway actress or something?" The waiter points out.
"No, but I think I am moving to the city. A guy asked me to meet him here. Don't know if he's good or not, so I may need your help, just in case. In fact he just entered." Caitlin tells her as Peter Parker enters from the entrance on the far side of the diner.
"Peter Parker? He used to date my sister, Gwen. Once argued with my dad, but otherwise he's one of the nicest guys ever. Trust me, you're in good hands."
So either he's a good guy or he's coerced this guy to help him. Caitlin thought.
"Hey, Peter. Coffee?" The waiter asked Peter as he sat down opposite Caitlin.
"Thanks Howard." He replied as the waiter (who Caitlin now knew was named Howard) poured the coffee and left them be to peruse their menus.
"Still think I should trust you since you have an ally here?" She asked Peter.
"There are still plenty of strangers. How's the coffee?"
"I've had better. Now quit the smalltalk and tell me who you are."
"How about we order food and then I'll tell you my history and then, what I may know of yours." Caitlin agreed and after they ordered, he started his tale. "I take it from when you first came here, you've never met me or ever heard of Peter Parker or Spider-Man."
"I'm guessing that's your name in that costume?"
"Yep."
Maybe he is a good guy. Hell, the only people I know of with their gender as part of their monocher are superheroes like Supergirl, Batman, Superman, Batwoman, and Wonder Woman. Caitlin thought.
"Well, it all goes back to my parents." He told her.
"You're really going back that far?" She jested.
"Trust me, it's necessary. My father was a scientist for a company called "Oscorp.""
"Yeah, I've known superheroes and villains associated with companies like that, including my friends and I." She told him, thinking of S.T.A.R. Labs, Queen Consolidated, Merlyn Global Group, Palmer Tech, Lord Technologies, Wayne Enterprises, etc.
"Well, my father was working with the head of the company, Norman Osborn and another scientist for the company, Doctor Curt Connors, on cross species genetics. Connors wanted to regrow his right arm that he lost years ago, while Norman wanted my father's help to cure a hereditary disease he and his son, Harry, had. At least that's what he told my dad. But along with trying to cure himself, his son, and basically all diseases, Norman wanted my father to create genetic weapons."
"Super soldiers?" She asked. Peter nodded in confirmation. "Yeah, I knew an army general, named Wade Eiling, who tried to use metas for the army, including my late husband."
"You were married?" Peter exclaims in surprise. He figured that since she never even heard of him or a doppelgänger of him, she wouldn't be married to him like their Earth-1 doppelgängers were. But it still surprised him that even in a world without Spider-Man, Caitlin Snow still fell in love. What's more, he was surprised by his own reaction.
"Yeah, my friend, Cisco, once compared a few months of our relationship to 10 seasons of Ross and Rachel. You guys have the sitcom, "Friends," right?"
"Yeah, we do. Though personally, I shipped Rachel with Joey."
Caitlin chuckles. "I never told Cisco, but I did too."
Peter chuckles too. "Well, my father didn't want to use science to create weapons. So the most he did was experiment on spiders, but Oscorp mostly used them to create spider silk that had the same strength as cables on suspension bridges."
"Damn. I'll give your father this, that is impressive."
"Well, Oscorp didn't know how to use them to create weapons and my dad only made it possible for the spiders to affect his DNA in a positive way."
"And let me guess, being his biological son, those spiders gave you your powers."
"A bit ahead of ourselves, but yeah. I have the proportional strength, speed and agility of a spider. I can sense danger just before it happens and I can stick to any surface on command."
"Climb walls like a spider?" She asks. He nods. Even demonstrates by grabbing some sugar packets and extending his fingers to show some of the packets have stuck to his finger tips.
"Anyway dad didn't want Oscorp to use his research. So he left me with his brother, my Uncle Ben, and his wife, my Aunt May, while he and my mom left to keep us safe. However, Oscorp sabotaged the private plane my parents were on and they crashed. The authorities declared my parents were dead."
"I'm sorry." Caitlin responded, sympathetically, even grabbing his hand without realizing. But by then Howard returned with their food.
"Oh, I see you're finally moving on from Gwen." He says, glad for his sister's old boyfriend. "I'll check back with you guys later."
She then realizes where her hand is and then let's go to grab her utensils to start eating. As she starts eating, she realizes something. "Though not to be rude or insensitive, but killing them by plane crash, kinda overkill on Oscorp's part."
While Peter should feel insulted by that remark, he chuckles at her point before also starting to eat his meal. "Yeah, I guess so. Anyway, people from Oscorp framed my parents' legacy and told my Aunt and Uncle that they were traitors to the US and were going to sell the information to a foreign country.
"Fast-forward to my senior year of highschool, I go and help my uncle with a problem in the basement. While down there, I found my dad's work bag with everything he had on him before he left. Including a notebook with the decay rate algorithm for cross-species genetics."
"I'm guessing Oscorp lied to your aunt and uncle to trick them into getting that information." Caitlin assumed.
"Probably, but since I had it, they clearly failed. Anyway, I snuck into Oscorp to find more info, only to find a room with the spiders I mentioned. One of them bit me and as you deduced, they gave me my powers. I was scared at first, because I didn't know about all that stuff my dad, Norman, and Connors were doing."
"But you told me in that order because you're going by the timeline, right?"
"Right. But I was scared about the consequences of being part spider. So I went to Doctor Connors for answers, even revealing to him that I know the decay rate algorithm, but not that it was the same as dad's, but I made him think that I came up with it. After showing him the equation, we went to test it at Oscorp with mice and lizard DNA, since as you probably know-"
"Most lizards can regrow their tails and Connors still wanted his arm back. I get that and trying to find more about your parents," she said thinking about when she tried to find her father a few years ago, "but why did you help him test the algorithm? You could have just left after accidentally giving it to him."
"Scientific curiosity." He shrugs. "What can I say, I'm a nerd."
"I have a doctorate in bioengineering. You don't have to explain to me about getting excited by new breakthroughs in science."
"Unfortunately, my powers made me cocky and I humiliated my bully, which got me in trouble and working with Connors made me late with my home responsibilities as my Uncle yelled at me. I got angry because part of his lecture was about a saying my father had about responsibility and…and I was angry. I felt like my parents abandoned me, so I lashed out at him and…." Peter tells her, starting to feel sad about his past regrets, before starting to take a deep breath to reveal something else he was ashamed of. "...I ran away."
Caitlin wanted to reach out to him again, but didn't want to make it awkward again.
"I went to a Bodega to buy some chocolate milk, but the cashier wouldn't let me because I was a couple cents under."
"Really, the last time that happened to me, the cashier took what I had and let me purchase my product."
"Well, welcome to New York." He shrugged. "Though technically, that was in Queens, but still in the state of New York. Anyway, someone came after me in line and robbed the cashier. I didn't bother because the robber was nice enough to toss me the chocolate milk. So I didn't help the cashier and let him get away. However, Uncle Ben was walking the streets, looking for me. He bumped into the same robber, who dropped his gun. Uncle Ben tried to stop him, but…"
Peter doesn't say anything for a while, but he doesn't have to. Caitlin decides to now take his hand.
"It's, ok," she whispers in a comforting tone, "I have a feeling I know what you were about to say."
"Thanks. Well after that, I decided to go hunt his killer. But it soon became apparent, I'd have to deal with criminals and that if they saw my face, they'd hunt me down as well. Which led to me creating my Spider-Man suit, well the first one. I also decided to buy some of Oscorp's webbing to use to help create these," he tells her as he rolls one of his sleeves up to reveal… "my web shooters. I use them to swing throughout the city and other things to stop criminals. But again, it was for part of my vengeance. Soon after, uh…" He was about to say more, but couldn't. He looked uncomfortable with what he wanted to say.
"Are you ok?" She asked with concern.
"It's just…it has to do with Howard's older sister. She was my girlfriend, but she was murdered about a decade ago." Caitlin looked shocked. "Yeah, I know, not exactly good first date material."
Caitlin smirked. "So this is a date, huh?" She teased.
Peter froze. Admittedly, he hadn't stopped thinking about her doppelgänger since he was abducted to that other Earth. In the short time he knew her, he thought she was nice and for the first time since Gwen's death, he met a girl he found to be beautiful. Of course, he wouldn't take the girl of another Peter Parker in the multiverse, but Peter of Earth-1 did suggest he try to find Caitlin's doppelgänger of this universe. However, he discovered that she died as a teenager from ALS. He also considered asking out his former neighbor, Mary Jane Watson (hoping she was more like the MJ he met on that other Earth and less like the one who was married to Peter-2), but discovered that she was already married for the last few years. He wondered if he had gotten over Gwen sooner and asked out Mary Jane, would they be together by now.
But back in the present, he was sitting across from a Caitlin Snow of another universe and part of him was wondering if this was the girl he should move on with.
"What, no, we just met…" He stammered at her question.
Caitlin laughed. "Just teasing. It's ok, I get it. I've lost a lot of friends and family too. I already told you about Ronnie, my late husband." Peter nodded, also because Peter-4 mentioned that name when talking about friends he lost when they were abducted. "I actually lost him a few times and thought him dead. But he recently died, along with my sister."
Peter didn't want to push her too far. He could tell that this subject made her a little depressed and he wanted her to trust him, after all.
"How about I continue my story, ok?" He asked and she nodded. "Well, just before Ben died, I asked Gwen out, but we didn't say when, since several hours later, Ben died. But shortly after I started my vendetta, she asked me to have dinner with her family."
"Wait, WHAT!" Caitlin exclaims. "Howard!" She calls for their waiter.
"Yes, is there anything else I can get you?" Howard asked after approaching their table.
"Did you know that when your sister invited Peter to your house the first time, it was their first date!?"
"I didn't until the following day."
"What's the matter?" Peter asked.
"No offense to Gwen, but it is a terrible idea to have the first date be the same date you meet the in-laws!" Caitlin told them. "I mean you two are trying to get to know each other, trying to consider if you want to date this person. Meeting the parents can be scary. You don't scare them away on the first date!" Caitlin rambled.
"Yeah, that was my response too. I thought she was crazy for making meeting "us" their first date." Howard replied.
"Well, I look back on that as a good date. Their father gave me a verbal kick in the ass I needed."
"Good to know. Is there anything else I can get you guys? How about a refill on your coffees?"
"Sure."
After Howard did so, the two went back to their conversation.
"So, in what way did their father verbally kick your ass?" Caitlin asked.
"Well, he was a police captain and the police didn't like my vigilantism. I argued with him about it, but he had a point. I was just taking down criminals who looked like my uncle's killer. I wasn't stopping all crime or saving innocents."
"I know a little of what that's like. Both Barry and our friend Oliver were at one point wanted by the police for their vigilantism, later superheroing. The police hated them, but now, everyone there sees them as heroes."
"Sad that that's a constant in the multiverse. The NYPD and the city warmed up to me too, eventually. Though I still have my critics. Anyway, while I was having dinner with the Stacys, Oscorp was pressuring Connors to move up testing on the serum we developed. This forced him to test it on himself. It did work…partially. He grew back his right arm, though he described it as looking like an adult version of how baby arms look in the womb."
"Ok, but how did you know about this?"
"Connors later told me."
"Oh!" Caitlin realized.
"Anyway he tried to stop his superior at Oscorp from testing on veterans, but the drug wasn't perfect and turned him into a big lizard creature."
"So it was kinda like Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde?"
"Sorta, even when he later turned back into a human, the drug still affected his personality. Made him believe that the only way to cure all of humanity's ailments is to turn everyone into a lizard creature like him. That night, on our first date-"
"-and meeting her family." Caitlin interrupted.
""-and meeting her family."" Peter repeated with a chuckle. "I revealed my identity to her. But then I heard the sirens and followed them to the Williamsburg Bridge where I first met Connors as The Lizard. He was tossing cars off the bridge, trying to kill his Oscorp superior. I managed to tether the cars to the bridge with my webs, but one of them had a little boy in one of them and his father was on the bridge begging for help, so I went down to the car and safely reunited father and son. It made me realize that's what I should do with my powers, what Uncle Ben and Captain Stacy were telling me; not avenge my uncle, but stop criminals to help others and save people. I needed to use my powers responsibly and that's what I've been doing since."
Caitlin looked at Peter with sympathy. Unless he was the best actor Caitlin ever met, she was starting to believe him. But then she mentally scolded herself, Eobard and Hunter tricked her too. But she agreed to at least listen to the rest of his story before making a final judgment.
"Afterward, I went hunting for Connors after going to Oscorp to see him acting strange and found one of the mice we experimented on also became a lizard hybrid." Peter continued.
"Yikes." Caitlin responded.
"Yeah, I later found a second lab he created in the sewers-"
"That's a terrible idea. Germs and other outside contaminants could affect his experiments." Caitlin ranted. Not the first time she has, since she once told Cisco something similar about Donatello's lab in the Ninja Turtles cartoons.
"You have a point. I'll ask him next time I see him."
"So he's still alive?"
"Yeah, he is. Anyway, at his lab/hideout, I found his plans. He planned to use the Ganali Device, which was a device at Oscorp that was meant to create a cloud to rain down a cure for people in a city or town, but-"
"It could also be used to spread a virus and The Lizard was going to use it on the people of New York to make more Lizards." Caitlin deduced. She then makes a quick look around her at the diner patrons and everyone outside the window. "I take it that you beat him since I don't even see one reptilian hybrid."
"Yeah, but I had a hell of a time getting to him first since the police were hunting me due to my vigilantism. But first, I got delayed by the cops, including Captain Stacy. He unmasked me and I begged for him to let me go and stop The Lizard. I agreed, and then I made it to Oscorp, Gwen made a cure for Connors, and her dad came to back me up.
"I stopped his plan and cured him and some police officers he turned earlier by switching out his virus with the cure in the Ganali device and curing them. It was because of that that I was starting to be liked by the city. But while I was switching the virus with the cure, Lizard stabbed Captain Stacy with his claws. Before he died, he told me that if I was to continue as Spider-Man, to leave Gwen out of it. I later realized he just meant not to help me as Spider-Man, but I thought he wanted me to not date her. I broke up with her at first, but she figured out why."
"She sounded smart."
"Yeah, May helped me realize I'm good enough for her and we got back together."
"And Connors?"
"He was arrested for the chaos and destruction and murdering a police captain."
"But he wasn't fully in control." Caitlin pointed out.
"Oh, I've been working with his lawyer to release him soon. It's been a decade since he went to jail. But back then, I started to feel guilty about disobeying Captain Stacy's last request, so I broke up with her again after a few months of dating."
Caitlin looked annoyed about that. "You strung her along?"
"Not intentionally. I know, not my proudest moment. Well I reunited with her a few years later while we were both attending colleges, but only to tell me she earned a scholarship for Oxford University."
"Damn, that's a prestigious school, even in my universe."
"Well, at the same time, the founder of Oscorp, Norman Osborn, died of the hereditary disease only his family had. In fact, he wanted Connors serum to cure him."
"Let me guess; by rushing the serum's creation, he doomed himself and Connors."
"Yeah, he had a part to play in everything the Lizard did. With Norman's death, his son Harry came back to run the company (though the board of directors secretly ran it and hated Harry). What I haven't told you yet was that Harry had been my childhood best friend."
""Had?"" Caitlin asked.
"He's alive, but let's just say for now, he doesn't like me anymore. But when he returned to New York to run the company, I reunited with my best friend. Another thing that happened at the same time was this Oscorp engineer, Max Dillon, fell into a pool of electric eels that Oscorp experimented on with Connors' research. The accident gave him electric powers and turned him blue."
"Yeah, I've come across villains like that on my earth." Caitlin told him, thinking of Blackout and the stories Kara told her about Live Wire.
"I guess I shouldn't be surprised. At this rate, anything's possible in the multiverse. Well, between looking like a freak to people, being socially awkward, no friends, hated by his coworkers, and a Spider-Man fan turned hater, Max became a villain and tried to kill me. Went by Electro. I defeated him by dowsing him with water thanks to the help of some firefighters letting me use a firehose. Max got sent to the Ravencroft Institute, an asylum to contain him. Meanwhile, Harry's hereditary disease was starting to show. But as CEO, he discovered the project our parents did with spiders and realized that Spider-Man was a result of that and wanted to study his blood to cure him. He asked me, as Peter, to ask Spider-Man for help."
"And why would he think you two would know each other?"
"Because to help pay for college, I would sell pictures of Spider-Man to a news company that "reported" the news for their newspaper and news website." Peter told her by making the quotations gesture with his hands.
"Let me guess; you actually used the timer on the camera to take selfies."
"And use my webs to stick it to buildings, lampposts, etc."
"Ok, but what about the quotations for the news company's reporting?"
"Well, the editor didn't trust anyone, so he believed that Spider-Man was really a criminal trying to trick the city. He was one of my critics that I told you about. It's because of him that people took a lot longer to trust me. As for Harry, I went to him as Spider-Man and agreed to help him on the condition that we study my blood to check if there were any side effects."
"But you said earlier that it only affected your family's DNA in a positive way. Didn't you tell him that?"
"I found out everything I told you about my parents a few days after that meeting. Harry didn't want to hear it. He was impatient."
"Why? His father was of course older than him, so it would stand to reason he had decades before he was really worried."
"I guess his father's death really shook him more than he thought."
"Still, he should've agreed to your terms. They weren't that unreasonable."
"Trust me, I've yelled at him about that. But yeah, in his desperation to cure himself, he discovered files about the secret projects Norman and Oscorp had been working on, including the venom from the experimented spiders." Peter continued.
"Why didn't he go down to the same room the spiders were in before?"
"After everything with Connors, Oscorp scraped the spiders and put their venom in the vault with the secret projects."
"But not the eels that were also experimented on?"
Peter then realizes, "You have a point."
"Also, without those spiders, how have you been using webs for your web shooters?"
"Well, I had to create new webbing from scratch. Anyway, before Harry could get to the secret projects, it was then that the board of directors created a coup to get rid of Harry as CEO by pinning Max becoming Electro on him. Unfortunately for them, when Harry discovered the secret projects he discovered what happened to Max. So he went to Ravencroft and freed Max, who agreed to help him get to the secret projects and get revenge on the board of directors while Max would take control of the city's power, which he designed the power source for Oscorp, but they didn't give him credit.
"At the same time, I discovered my family's secret and that Gwen was leaving for England soon. So I made the decision to stay with her and be Spider-Man in England and she agreed. But it was then that we noticed Electro affecting the power of the city including hospitals and airports (especially air traffic control)."
This widened Caitlin's eyes in shock. Plane collisions are no joke and she thought of the time when Barry and Nora phased a plane to safety.
"We went to said power plant and overloaded Max with electricity, killing him and saving the city, hospitals and planes. But then Harry came. He took the spider venom and it affected him by accelerating the effects of the disease by turning his skin pale green and giving him fangs and claws."
"Never heard of a disease in my universe that would do that to you before you died. Then again, I've seen magical things in the last 7 years. I wouldn't be surprised if the Osborns had a curse on them or something." Caitlin stated.
"Well, I wouldn't have believed if magic was real until a few months ago, but I'm getting ahead of myself. In order to avoid the fatal part of his disease, Harry put on an exosuit (that was also mostly green) that must have been in the secret vault to help regulate him. It came with daggers, special grenades, and a glider he'd stand on to fly him places. The news later dubbed him The Green Goblin. He flew to the power plant to find me with Gwen. When I first reunited with him, I told him about Gwen and our dating history and he'd met her before the board kicked him out. So, seeing us together helped him put two and two together and that Spider-Man was Peter Parker. This led to a fight at the top of an old clock tower. He took Gwen up there to kill her. We fought, but the clock was coming apart. I had to both fight Harry and prevent Gwen from falling but…" He starts to tear up a little. "...it was all for naught."
Caitlin grabs some napkins and hands them to Peter.
"You can skip ahead if you want. That was when she died, wasn't it?" Caitlin asked. Peter nodded. "It's okay, I understand. What happened after?"
"Harry was arrested and sent to Ravencroft. He looked normal again, but I've been told that his green appearance comes and goes."
"I'm guessing that because he was in a mental institution, he can't tell the press that you're Spider-Man without some hard evidence."
"Yeah. Anyway, after her death, I stopped being Spider-Man to mourn her. Harry would get visits from a loyal employee or two who he conspired with to create more bad guys for me to fight, like a Russian mobster who Harry gave a mech suit that also partly resembled a rhinoceros. It was about five months after her death that "Rhino" started to attack the city. I wasn't going to stop him at first, but seeing Aunt May start to move on from Ben and finally listen to Gwen's valedictorian speech from our highschool graduation, it gave me the courage to be a hero. I stopped him, but I was still depressed over the years. At some point, I just…I stopped pulling my punches. I got rageful. I got bitter. It was like that for the last 8 years. All the while Harry would create and send more and more villains at me to get revenge. But several months ago, I was abducted by magic to another universe. Apparently my doppelgänger there was framed and had his identity revealed. He asked a wizard friend for help, but it brought me, Max, and Connors when they were still villains."
"So Max wasn't killed or was he resurrected and Connors became the Lizard again?" Caitlin asked.
"No, the spell took Max and Connors from just before they were killed and/or cured, but not just them, but two other doppelgängers of me, one of them had three villains return from their past. One of his was Harry's dad, who in that universe became The Green Goblin, though he just got super strength and an evil personality."
"Sounds like how me and Frost started out."
"Speaking of, the second version of me that was abducted had a doppelgänger of you. Now, I'll give you an option, I can tell you about my doppelgänger and yours now or when I talk about what I know of your history."
She thinks about it for a few seconds, but then smiles. "Screw it, tell me."
"I'll start with you, when I met you, or should I say, Frost. She was working for Savitar, who was like an evil twin of your friend Barry. She was abducted by the time she was about to turn good."
"Interesting. Your villains were taken before they killed, arrested, cured, or turned good. At a turning point for them."
"You're counting Frost among them?"
"I'll always love Frost like a sister. But back when she was working with Savitar, she was a bad guy. So, what about your doppelgänger?"
"I'll tell, but just something important and the rest for when I tell you the history he told me."
"Ok."
"Apparently, back then, she was dating my doppelgänger."
Caitlin's eyes were wide. She only just started to get over Ronnie, only for the whole Deathstorm disaster to happen.
"Well, since you were from the present when you were taken. Was it the same for him?"
"Yes."
"And what was their relationship?"
"That Peter is now married to Caitlin and Frost."
"He's married to two women at once?"
"Huh, isn't Frost a second personality?
"She…she was. But it's complicated." She said, a little depressed.
"Think you could tell me after my stories?" Peter asked, trying to ease her discomfort.
She sighs. "How about we see how I feel by then?"
"Ok. Well my doppelgänger of that universe discovered that a majority of the villains died fighting my doppelgängers. So he decided to try and cure them and he did with the help of me and the other doppelgängers."
"What about the other Frost?"
"They only saved her from being Frost permanently and helped her be a hero."
It certainly sounded crazy to Caitlin, but then again, Frost turned just after fighting Cisco, and it was shortly after that that she helped Team Flash stop Savitar.
"After that, everyone went home to our respective universes." Peter continued. "After I did, I caught up with Curt and Max. Without his powers, Max still survived and has been working with charities to make up for what he did. Connors still killed Captain Stacy as the Lizard, so he's still serving time, though we hired a lawyer to help him get released sooner."
"Wouldn't Oscorp try to get Max arrested or Connors stay in prison."
"They could, but then we'd point out how they're responsible for what happened to them. The public already is starting to hate the company for everything the Lizard and Harry did. Recently, Max and I have become friends and have started our own company for science research and products. With everything that happened on the other Earth, Max became better looking and more confident, he even has a girlfriend now. And here we are."
"Here we are. So, unless you were lying to seem more sympathetic, I know your life story. So, what do you know about me?"
"Most of it was from a rant about a woman named Iris and her toxic relationship with Barry that I overheard two of my doppelgängers talk about. My doppelgänger that's married to you really hated Iris."
This certainly peaked Caitlin's interest. While she was never the biggest fan of Iris, especially her immature reaction to Barry's secret identity. It also recently dawned on her that she hated that Iris took over as leader of Team Flash. Fortunately, she stopped as she started to have more and more responsibilities at the Central City Citizen.
"In what way?" She asked.
"I'll go in order of what he told me. You and he were married and he owned a company. He also mentioned friends that died, Robbie and Oliver, the former of which you already mentioned earlier."
Those last few words automatically made Caitlin feel down.
"You ok?" Peter asked.
"I'll tell you after your story."
"Ok. Barry and Iris were childhood friends, but Barry had a crush on her. His mom was killed by someone named Eobard from the future and the police thought his father did it. Afterward, he was adopted by Iris' father, Joe, who was also the arresting officer, which I would imagine would be pretty awkward. To top it off, now his crush is his foster sister. But the actual cherry on top was that Joe approved the crush and wanted Iris and Barry to be together."
The mood Caitlin was in when Peter brought up Ronnie disappeared. It was funny how Barry was adopted by Joe after he arrested Henry. It also reminded her how awkward it was that Barry did marry his foster sister, thus making Joe his foster dad and father-in-law at the same time and it was weird that he was okay with that.
"By the time Barry was in his 20s, Iris dated Joe's partner on the force, Eddie, who was also originally the ancestor of Eobard." Peter continued. "Barry also became The Flash, a superhero with super speed. I'm assuming you worked with him and he mentioned an engineer named Cisco."
"Yeah. I was his doctor. Helped after injuries he got from bad guys and helped him find biological ways to stop them or the situation they caused. Cisco was my best friend and tech guy of the team, the best comparison he'd make would be Q from James Bond."
"Yeah, your doppelgänger helped one of my doppelgängers after he got stabbed by the doppelgänger of Harry's dad. Cisco sounds cool, would love to talk shop with him someday. Anyway, Barry revealed his crush to Iris, but she turned him down and he moved on, though inadvertently with a coworker of Iris'."
Caitlin chuckles a little. "Oh wow, I haven't thought of Linda Park in ages."
"Did Barry and Iris cheat on her and Eddie by kissing each other before he went back in time?"
"Oh, god yes!" She replied. Remembered how stupid that was that they kissed while in relationships with others.
"The other Peter also said that your team dealt with what he called "sci-fi shenanigans?""
Caitlin burst into laughter. "Honestly, that's a good way to describe the last seven years of my life. Ha ha ha!"
"Well, sometime later, Iris found out and threw a fit."
"Oh God, she was so angry. And what's worse, she was the only one who was ever angry that he lied and was either a friend, family, or a girlfriend."
"Yeah, anyway, Eddie died to stop Eobard. My doppelgänger also said you guys found Eobard's computer and it had a news article that insinuated in the byline that Barry and Iris would one day get married. My doppelgänger believed that because of that article and hearing that they were married on another Earth in the Multiverse, that they should be together because of the comfort of being in a relationship."
Caitlin now couldn't help but wonder if Iris truly loved Barry or if they were together because of the loss of Eddie.
"You guys also had to deal with an evil clone created by time travel of Barry named Savitar."
"Honestly, that may be the best and simplest way to describe a speed duplicate." Caitlin replied.
"It was also when Frost started to show up. My doppelgänger felt that she probably never would have joined Savitar if Barry hadn't prioritized Iris over your doppelgänger."
He had a point, even Caitlin hadn't warmed up to Iris because of that.
"When Cisco tried to make sure Barry didn't get new memories for Savitar to spy on the team, it accidentally gave him amnesia. My doppelgänger as the only other leader of the team decided that they needed to repair the device that took his memories and return them, but Iris decided she was leader and that they should just retrain Barry to be the Flash. But my doppelgänger put the kibosh on that. They eventually got his memories back, defeated Savitar, saved Iris, and you and Frost were sent to that other Earth, but I'm assuming she returned instantaneously and kept it a secret to not mess with the timeline, otherwise my doppelgänger would have known about everything that happened to us there. Apparently Savitar wasn't supposed to die, but was supposed to be trapped in Barry's power source, the Speed Force, so Barry took his place there. You guys later had to deal with a new threat that needed Barry, but Iris didn't want to because she saw Barry going into the Speedforce as him essentially dying and abandoning her."
"Yeah, I hated that Iris thought that, even ambushing him into couples therapy."
"I think Barry made the right decision. To quote one of my other doppelgängers quoting my aunt's doppelgänger, "Sometimes to do what's right, we must give up the thing we want the most, even our dreams.""
"Sounds like a wise woman."
"Something I think is multiversal."
Earth-61616...
I can't believe Aunt May is marrying Doc Ock, even though he's still a wanted felon! The Peter Parker of that universe thought as he was swinging through New York City as Spider-Man.
Earth-120703...
"While Barry was in the Speedforce, Iris tried to be leader because she was engaged to Barry, but my doppelgänger shut that down." Peter continued. "After Barry returned and married Iris, they encountered their daughter named Nora from the future, who traveled back in time to get to know her dad because he was dead then and that probably made Iris very protective of her so she suppressed Nora's powers without her knowledge or permission."
Caitlin agreed, the way future Iris sounded in Nora's diary sounded terrible and Caitlin couldn't believe that Barry still loved her after that. She felt Barry was too in love with Iris and was blinded to her flaws. She almost wanted to go back to her Earth and tell Barry to leave Iris. But she doubted if Barry would listen, especially since Barry had known Iris longer than her.
"Nora's changes to the timeline sped up the date of a crisis of infinite Earths by an Anti-Matter being. During said event, my doppelgänger and Barry died, but they were brought back by their friends, called the Paragons. Several worlds were brought back and combined and lots of things changed. Eddie was brought back and he was married to Iris instead and Barry was married to an ex-girlfriend (who's relationship with Barry was sabotaged by Iris) from before the Crisis, Patty-"
"Spivot?"
"What?"
"It was her last name, Patty Spivot."
Peter shrugs. "I don't know, my doppelgänger never told me her last name."
"Was Barry ever told the truth? He was a Paragon on my Earth."
"He was one too. But because he died, I guess he wasn't part of the Paragons who saved the multiverse."
"So he did remember Pre-Crisis." Caitlin asked. Peter nods. "I'm surprised he'd be ok with this change."
"Apparently my doppelgänger talked him into staying with Patty. They eventually had a daughter named Dawn and my doppelgänger said they're still happily married."
"I don't think I could see my Barry choosing Patty and Dawn over Iris and Nora."
"Our doppelgängers also had kids. Eldest was an adopted girl named Frankie, a meta tween my doppelgänger related to due to getting powers at such a young age."
The name Frankie reminded Caitlin of Frankie Kane, a meta tween that could control metal. Caitlin hadn't thought of her in years, but she wondered if on this Earth, she and Peter's doppelgänger adopted her.
"Your doppelgänger was pregnant with twins, Tommy and Tina, when she and my doppelgänger got married. Last I saw him, he said she was pregnant with their third. And that's it. Think I've earned enough trust for an explanation as to why you're here?"
"Ok, well, Oliver died so that the Multiverse could be resurrected. Ronnie was also a hero…and my husband. He died when Eobard tried to destroy the city. But recently, we discovered he survived, but his body was taken over by an entity called Deathstorm. It fed off of the grief of people and the team and wanted to make me be like him and turn me into his bride, because he was lonely."
"Yeesh! I'm assuming that since you're here, he didn't succeed." Peter said, a little shocked.
"Yeah, but at a cost." She told him, a little sadly. "Frost died killing him."
"Wait, what? Isn't she another personality of yours?"
"She was, but a year ago, a villain used a device to duplicate things. When she used it on me, Frost and I were separated into two people. At first, I hated not having her in my head, but she wanted to be her own person and have her own life. She even dated a guy who certainly seemed nice enough and accepted her. And…that's about it." Caitlin said. She didn't feel ready to tell Peter about trying to resurrect Frost and Barry destroy any progress she had in doing so. At least, she decided not to tell him the whole truth.
"So, now what for you?" Peter asks her.
"Right now I don't feel at home back in my universe. I had a fight with Barry after Frost's death. Not to mention things have changed too much on the team, especially after Barry and Iris got together. My friend, Cisco, made this." She showed him the extrapolator. "An interdimensional extrapolator. Before the Crisis and if Cisco couldn't use his powers, we used these to travel to anywhere in the universe and other universes. We even gave them to friends we made in other universes to travel to us or even to communicate with us."
"Wow! This thing is even smaller than a Portal gun." Peter said, amazed. "I mean, Christ, is it small. Were there bigger versions before this?"
Caitlin smiled, she liked how this advanced piece of tech made him happy. It reminded her of Cisco and Barry around the beginning of Team Flash. "No, I'm pretty sure it's been the same size."
"Damn, it can take you to anywhere on the planet and beyond, yet it fits in my pocket. To quote Boromir: "It is a strange fate that we should suffer so much fear and doubt over so small a thing.""
"You're comparing this tech to an evil ring?"
"Well, everything has its yin and yang. Take TV for example, it's addictive and too much can affect our brains. But, if we're stressed, it can help us relax. It's even been our first teacher. I don't know about you, but I learned how to read and count from Sesame Street and some of my moral compass was formed by Mister Rogers. Were those kid shows in your universe?"
Caitlin smiled. "Yes they were. I even had a Cookie Monster stuffed animal growing up."
"Nice. But now that the extrapolator brought you here, what are you going to do now? I doubt Disney World, unless it doesn't exist in your world."
"It does, I haven't been there in years. But as for my next move, I'm going to move here. My hacker friend Felicity taught me a few things. I can create an identity for myself that the US government won't find. Even doctor a high school GED and college diplomas"
"Isn't that kind of cheating."
"A little, I just don't want to start from scratch when it comes to my education, unless I later decide to go back to learn something else. Right now, I just want a new job."
"Well after you create your new identity, you could work with me and Max. We include sciences in your wheelhouse, like chemistry and medicine."
"Thanks, but I'll think about it for now."
"So, you'll create a new identity today, but what about tonight?" Peter asked. Which Caitlin raised an eyebrow to. "Oh, I didn't mean to sound lewd. I meant that you don't have a place to stay. I can let you stay on my couch and I promise no funny business. I guess that you won't because you still don't trust me. You could stay with my aunt in Queens, but again, the matter of trust. I know of a homeless shelter you can stay at, at least."
"I don't know, you seem like a good person, but you're still a stranger."
"Excuse me." Said an elderly blind woman, who walked up to their table. "May my friend and I please sit down with you."
"Ma'am you can have the table in a sec, we'll get up. We've finished our meal anyway." Peter offered.
"Please, stay seated and let us sit with you." Said a second woman who was standing behind the blind woman. She walked up to Peter and Caitlin, now in view of them. She was a beautiful redhead in her late 30s-early 40s, who Caitlin immediately recognized. "We insist."
"Nora?" Caitlin said, almost in a whisper.
"No, but it is a form you and Team Flash knew me best as."
"The Speed Force?!"
"The source of Barry's powers?" Peter asked.
"Yes and yes. So, may we please sit with you two?" Speed Force replied.
"Yes, of course." Caitlin replied.
"You sure about this?" Peter asked her.
"Trust me."
He did and the two helped the women sit down. Howard came back to ask for their orders and Speed Force and the blind woman just ordered coffee.
"So, who's your friend?" Caitlin asked "Nora."
"I am Madame Web. One of the guardians of the Multiverse, especially the Spider heroes of their universes." Madame Web told them.
"Yeah, I mean, I know I met my doppelgängers a few months ago, but the Peter of Earth-1 told me about his protege, Miles, and a doppelgänger of Gwen is the Spider-Woman of her universe." Peter stated.
"Indeed."
""Earth-1?" But I'm from Earth-1." Caitlin asked in confusion.
"No you are not, Caitlin." "Nora" told her. "Many worlds are similar to yours and believe that they are Earth-1 or Earth-Prime and the only world left surviving the Crisis and that they participated. But you are in fact from Earth-11111 and we are currently on Earth-120703."
"But, what about Oliver?" Caitlin asked.
"The Oliver Queen of Earth-1 did become the Spectre and saved the Multiverse. He is in purgatory and will return to help when the Multiverse is in danger. Yours is on another Earth as the Green Arrow. He won't remember you, Barry, or his time on your Earth. He will be less like Batman and more like a version of Oliver who worked with a doppelgänger of Kara Danvers' cousin, Clark. He is also happy and in love with the Laurel Lance of that Earth."
"But what about Felicity and Mia?"
"Billy Malone, Felicity's late boyfriend, was resurrected on your Earth and many others in Crisis. They will reunite in a few months and continue dating. Trust me, she will be happy and Mia will have a father figure in her life." "Nora" told her.
"So, if the Crisis wasn't real for me? As a Guardian of the Multiverse, wouldn't I still remember Madame Web?"
"The Crisis you recall is more like the one in Multiverse CW of the metaverse, which didn't have Spider-people for me to help." Web told her.
"Wait, a second ago you said that there are multiple Multiverses?"
"Indeed, Caitlin Snow. For example, there is the Dark Multiverse, which the Peter Parker of Earth-1 fought against with other doppelgängers of his, as well as yours and your friends, Caitlin Snow. And may I say, you actually did a good thing by leaving your universe." Madame Web explained.
"I did? What makes you say that?"
"I am clairvoyant. I see every possible future, and thus the Multiverse. You and Peter will have obstacles coming up that you will need to work together to accomplish."
"But I don't have powers like Frost."
"Just because you don't have powers, doesn't mean you don't have responsibilities." Peter assured her. "You helped Barry for years and not just when Frost was your second personality."
"Peter Parker is right. You, Caitlin Snow, can be of great help to him." Madame Web told her.
"But not only can you help Peter Parker and the citizens of this city, but you'll be helping Barry by leaving your Earth." "Nora" told her.
"Wait, what?" Caitlin asked.
"Barry never needed to go into the Speed Force to take Jay Garrick's place, Savitar's death caused the trap to cease to exist in this timeline. Your Earth was never in danger of the Speed Force. I really needed him to get away from Iris for a bit and show him how he didn't love her, but was simply obsessed with her, how she was a terrible partner for him, and how his obsession affected his relationships with not only his friends and family, but even other women in his life. When he left, he forgot everything he learned due to how long he spent in the Speed Force. With your absence, he'll start to remember and he and Iris won't be together anymore."
"I'm glad Barry will get out of an unhealthy relationship, but if you had let him out, leave later, and remember he has to break up with Iris, you could have saved him money on his wedding and divorce."
"I didn't have any control on when he left, otherwise I would have prevented DeVoe from creating the bus metas."
"What about Oliver inadvertently killing you and Barry having to recreate you and the other forces?"
"Your Barry needs to believe he participated in the Crisis and was a Paragon."
"Just feels unnecessary to me."
"I can understand that. But similar things need to happen to Barry and your friends in order for the timeline to eventually change, such as you leaving your Earth."
"Why the deception? Why not tell us all about the multiverse after the Crisis?"
"Your universe was still new. You and the heroes of Earth couldn't know of the truth and the multiverse until Wally West and John Constantine discovered it. Any outside revelation from myself or the like would have driven you mad to the point of catatonia. You needed to adapt to your universe before you were ready." "Nora" explained.
"I left a message for Team Flash, my mom, and Mark Blaine that I was going to another universe. Did I hurt them by revealing the multiverse still exists or have they adapted too?"
"No, they are perfectly safe. The point is, you are now where you belong in your path in life, you can trust Peter Parker to help you, and your disappearance will correct Barry's path."
"We're going to leave you now to talk." Madame Web told them. "Good bye, Peter Parker, Caitlin Snow."
"Yes, goodbye, Caitlin, Peter."
"Okay, goodbye." Caitlin told them.
"Yeah and thank you." Peter told them.
Madame Web and the Speedforce finished their coffees, left money (which also covered Peter and Caitlin's breakfast), and left.
"It's a shame we can't tell them about the change of Earth-1, especially since this Peter met the Peter of that world." The Speedforce said to Madame Web as they left the diner.
"I know, the change will eventually be undone, save for the deaths and births that the change caused." Madame Web said.
"It's also a shame we can't help the Peter and Barry of that universe. I can't go there until the Negative forces are defeated. And even when I can, everytime I do I forget that the change happened, the multiverse exists, and I feel weaker in that particular universe due to the changes. Even on this Caitlin's Earth, I'm weak and trapped until the Negative Forces are defeated."
"Have patience, everything will be okay and good will ultimately triumph."
"That's true. Eventually both Barry's will leave their false lightning rods. Even if both Iris' are currently trapped in their timelines."
The two entities then walked into the same alley that Caitlin appeared in, each went into a breach into their own home dimensions.
"I guess this is where I live now." Caitlin stated.
"Sooo." Peter said awkwardly.
"Sooo." Caitlin repeated.
"Do you want to stay with me…for now, at least?"
She was unsure a few minutes ago, but if the speed force vouched for Peter, then she figured that maybe he was trustworthy. "Yeah, ok."
After a half hour of using her laptop to create her new identity, Peter brought her to his apartment. She didn't expect it to be grand like on "Friends" and "How I Met Your Mother," but it was certainly decent. It had a bed, couch, coffee table, desk, swivel chair, a TV, a couple doors (one for the bathroom, the other for the closet) and a small kitchen in a corner. With everything, it wasn't crowded, but was still quite small.
"Well, here's my apartment. I know it's a little messy-" Peter said.
"Oh, I've seen Cisco's in worse shape." Caitlin replied.
"Well, you can stay here. We can tell Max and Conners since they've been to another universe and have met your doppelgänger. We can wait another day or two before we do that. You know, you can always work with us."
"Peter, you've already been pretty generous. I can get my own job."
"Okay. Well, the offer is open ended."
"Anyway, we should also wait awhile before I introduce you to Aunt May or Max's girlfriend. Don't want to overwhelm you too soon."
"That's fair."
"Ok, I'm gonna go back on patrol. Will you be okay alone?"
"Relax, I'll be fine."
"Okay." Peter said before heading to the bathroom and then returning a minute later in his Spider-Man suit. While Caitlin did notice that he was cute when they first met, she now noticed that he was quite attractive with how his suit hugged his body. "I should be a few hours. I'll pick up a pizza for dinner. Any preference?"
"Just nothing with anchovies, olives, or pineapple."
"Ok, and don't expect me to pay for everything just cause you don't have a job. As soon as you get your first paycheck, next meal we share is on you." He said a little jokingly.
"It's a deal." She says with a smile at his humor. He didn't notice that her smile caused his heart to skip a beat.
"Ok, bye." He says before putting on his mask, jumping out the window, and swinging away.
Caitlin smiled as she watched her new friend swing away. She then sat on the couch and for the first time since Ronnie died, she was looking forward to tomorrow and her new life.
A/N: Special thanks to fmfan1980. He had Barry use hacking skills to create an identity for himself when trapped in the Buffyverse world in his fic, "A Speedster in Sunnydale," and it inspired part of this fic. It's a nice Flash/Buffy crossover.
Some people may have forgotten that Skyler Gisondo played one of Gwen's little brothers (Howard) in the Amazing Spider-Man films. Plus he's gonna play Jimmy Olsen in James Gunn's "Superman."
There actually is a Spider-Man comic where Aunt May nearly married Doc Ock (Amazing Spider-Man #131). But yeah, comic and most cartoon Aunt May's are idiots and the movie versions (Rosemary Harris, Sally Fields, Marisa Tomei, and Lily Tomlin) and the version from the Insomniac games are a lot smarter and wise. I'm sure there are comics from before the films and games where Aunt May knows the truth about Peter being Spider-Man and where she seems smart and wise, but most comics I've read and cartoons I've seen make her come across as an idiot.
