None of the physical injuries Emily had suffered were enough to keep her in the hospital for longer than a couple of days. "Let's just leave—let's go get married. I'll take you to Paris like I always said I would."
Emily still wasn't fully convinced they weren't married but luckily the rest of her memories were intact. Holding her closer Emily kissed the top of her head "Remember we're already married in my head" she joked but Alison pouted.
"Feels like a sign from the universe if you asked me…maybe it's also a sign maybe we should cut back on the drinking." Alison tried to say that as calmly as she could trying to avoid upsetting Emily. Nodding slowly the brunette agreed "Yeah, that was easily one of the worst experiences I've ever had. And I've seen some shit."
Memories haunted Emily daily of things she had seen and done but when she thought she lost Alison for good it was sobering to say the least. "Luckily we have a mover coming next week. While I would love to up and run to go to Paris you have school next week." Alison nodded slowly but sighed "I can put this year off, just do some subbing instead of being full time. Someone's gonna have to take care of you Em…I know that's not what you want but the doctor said it would be a long time before you get feeling back in your hand…"
That awful night Emily had been attacked left her without feeling from her elbow to her finger tips of her left arm. While she was luckily able to lift her limbs she couldn't feel it. It was forcing her transition out of the army even faster than originally planned. "Im sure my mom will be willing to help me babe. Luckily she's retired and the Army still takes really good care of her."
Emily wasn't someone who wanted to be taken care of, being forced to be in a leadership position since as far back as she could remember callused her to believing help was never an option. However until she was able to start physical therapy there was no guarantee she'd be able to do the job she loved so much. "Ali what if I can't help people anymore. That's going to kill me."
Swiping away the tear Alison shook her head. "Even if you couldn't step foot into another emergency situation you will always find a way to help people. That's what you do, it's what you have always done." Sighing Emily just wanted to close her eyes long enough to wake up from this nightmare. That wasn't really an option, unfortunately.
"Come on, we've been in bed for two days. We need to go somewhere. Do something so you can just stop thinking." Emily nodded, there was no reason to argue. Especially when she knew it wouldn't do any good.
That day quickly turned into night. They couldn't keep their hands off of each other. No matter what they were doing they always had some sort of physical contact. Maybe it was physiological trauma from almost losing one another, maybe it was them learning to appreciate the "right now". Emily leaned over kissing Alison one more time, ever so tenderly. "Ali-when we get back to Rosewood, where are we going to stay? I mean, I know we haven't said out loud what our next move is but I don't want to be away from you. Not if I don't have to be."
Alison sighed softly "Well let's go through a trial run where we stay at mine. If you need more help then maybe we can stay with your mom? I'm sure the company wouldn't bother her too much." The passing of Emily's dad was something she didn't care to talk about. He was her best friend for so long but not long enough. Emily nodded in agreement "Yeah we can do that. While you're at work she can take me to physical therapy. I mean luckily I can still do most things by myself even with a numb broken arm."
-1 year later-
The hard conversations are the ones they tried to avoid, well on Emily's behalf anyway. Between being forced out of the job she loved, she had to learn basic movements with her muscles, tendons and ligaments. Alison knew she could do it and made sure to make it a point to remind Emily every day she could. Not that she wasn't trying to be optimistic but the physical therapy wasn't going as well or as smoothly as she hoped it would. Keeping that from Alison wasn't probably the smartest choice but she also didn't want her to be disappointed. Emily sat on the edge of the couch twisting the ring around her finger.
Since they had moved in together they got married not wanting to waste any precious time they were afraid could be taken from them. The girls weren't thrilled with them but it didn't matter what anyone else thought. No one else knew the journey they took to get here. With some movement back in her arms she was crushed she wouldn't be able to do much to help with their new borns on the way.
With a smile on her face her at home therapy seemed to be going okay though she wasn't happy with the lack of stability in her hands. Alison walked into the living room with a small smile. Her pregnant belly perfectly encased in the red shirt she was wearing made Emily melt. "Even eight months pregnant you are still by far the hottest woman I have ever seen." Rolling her eyes she set her book bag down on the bench next to the front door. Kicking off her shoes before making her way over to her wife.
Emily reached up slowly with her good arm placing her hand on her wife's belly. "Emily, behave." The blonde giggled reaching to help Emily bring up her left hand also. The movement had come back but it would never be what it was. "Come on we have an appointment and then your mom invited us over for dinner. Go put something nice on." Kissing the top of her head Alison quickly made her way over to their bedroom. Wanting to just put her feet up for a minute or two. Being of smaller stature anyway made the belly weight a lot harder on the rest of her body.
When the couple had decided they wanted to start a family, they hadn't anticipated in the result of their fertility treatment to result in two babies. Alison rubbed her bump softly trying to get them to settle down but they were having too much fun kicking her bladder and her ribs. "Em—their fighting can you please come calm down your children?" Lying back she took a deep breath.
Emily found her way into the room with just a bra and a pair of black slacks on. Sitting on the edge of the bed she leaned over to talk to the babies "Hello excuse me in there, you need to let Mommy relax. You'll be out sooner than you know it and you're gonna wish you could go right back to your warm safe spot" As the last words left her lips Alison screamed out in pain. "Emily! I think I'm having — real contractions. It's not like a month ago when I had—shit" Emily may not have been a doctor but she had been noticing how quickly or how far apart each. "I'm gonna go load up the car, I think tonight we're having babies instead of dinner."
